Venturing into uncharted territory, Cirque du Soleil Crystal tells the tale of a young woman who shatters through reality to reach a surreal world filled with possibility. Similarly, Cirque du Soleil forged beyond traditional limits of ice skating and acrobatics to create a new, exciting form of entertainment. Even without costumes or make-up, a preview of Crystal in September was in a word – mesmerizing. The preview’s three numbers included: o an ensemble routine blending Cirque’s acrobatics with high energy skating; o a thrilling action-packed vignette full of icy ramps challenged by skating gymnasts performing flips and jumps, and o a captivating duet that literally entwines performers and their art forms on skates and aerial straps, into a sensual pas de deux on the ice surface and rising into the upper reaches of the arena. Inviting audiences to “find out what it means to skate on the edge of reality,” Cirque du Soleil says that the goal of Crystal is to create a whole new form of entertainment and to redefine the standards of the ice show. production – a hybrid of ice arts and circus disciplines – combines the artistry, aesthetic and acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil with superlative skating, interactive multimedia, innovative choreography and poignant storytelling. “Crystal breaks the codes of the traditional ice show by creating a unique form of entertainment. To reach this objective, we brought together the best experts in their respective worlds. With this new show, the audience will discover the infinite possibilities that ice adds to the prowess of circus arts,” says Daniel Fortin, Executive Director, Creation, Crystal. “We are excited to create a unique entertainment experience on ice for all spectators to enjoy. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Cirque du Soleil as ice provides us with an entirely new field of play which also comes with a set of creative challenges. Our goal is to continuously surprise audiences by showcasing all the incredible possibilities on ice,” says Yasmine Khalil, Executive Producer of Crystal. Kurt Browning, four-time World Champion figure skater and veteran of many ice skating productions, is Crystal’s Skating Performances Senior Designer. He says that fans of competitive skating should not expect to see Crystal adhere to that style. The sport has rules, and according to Browning, things that are illegal in competitive skating make Crystal the show that it is. Continued on page 9

While beneath the surface, she envisions an alternative version of her life. Diving into a world of her own imagination, she sets out on a quest to fulfill her destiny. On her journey, she soars through a surreal world of light and shadows, discovering her creativity and becoming confident, free and empowered. Continued on page 11

With her imagination and command of words, Crystal controls and transforms events around her. Her journey culminates in a triumphant ascension toward the light in which she uses her power to break through the ice to free herself while carrying with her the lessons learned during her experiences under the ice. The creators of the production say that Crystal is about looking at things from fresh angles, peeking through the veneer of everyday life, reframing one’s daily reality to see what one might have missed. Sometimes the only way to appreciate things is to look at them sideways. Discovering one’s individuality and uniqueness requires venturing out on thin ice. Joanne World Tour Brings Lady Gaga to Pittsburgh By: Pam Thompson

Lady Gaga brings her Joanne World Tour to PPG Paints Arena this fall for one concert showcasing Mother Monster’s distinct style and diverse musical portrayals. The Pittsburgh show takes place Nov. 20 – in time to give Little Monsters one more thing to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. It will be the third time that Lady Gaga has performed in PPG Paints Arena. She came in 2010 with The Monster Ball Tour, her second headliner tour in support of her debut album, The Fame, and again in 2014 on her fourth headliner tour, ArtRave: The Artpop Ball, in support of her third studio album, Artpop. Early reviews indicate that fans will not be disappointed with Lady Gaga’s artistry, or the elements combining to make the Joanne World Tour concerts memorable shows. Reports called her voice “impressive” and “unfaltering” and her performance “high energy showmanship” and “her greatest role yet.” The tour and album, Joanne, memorialize Joanne Stefani Germanotta, the sister of Lady Gaga’s father. She died before her famous niece, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born. Continued on page 35

Polished Joanne concerts running two hours provide a mix of Lady Gaga’s early and newest works, changes of musical and theatrical styles, drama and humor, stunning costumes, lighting and special effects, and a complex combination of stages and bridges that spotlight the star from the rafters to the floors of venues. The set list for the early concerts of the tour included: “Diamond Heart,” “A-YO,” “Poker Face,” “Perfect Illusion,” “John Wayne,” “Scheiße,” “Alejandro,” “Just Dance,” “LoveGame,” “Telephone,” “Applause,” “Come to Mama,” “Edge of Glory,” “Born This Way,” “Bloody Mary,” “Dancin’ in Circles,” “Paparazzi,” “Angel Down,” “Joanne,” “Bad Romance,” “The Cure,” and “A Million Reasons.” The concerts take the audiences through Lady Gaga’s lively production The concerts take numbers and her touching piano solos that the audiences lay bare her vocal prowess. through Lady The star’s dazzling stage wardrobe comes with skyscraper footwear, crystals and Gaga’s lively fringe. production The tour staging includes a main numbers and her performance area and three ancillary stages touching piano that enable Lady Gaga and her ensemble to solos that lay bare play to concert goers throughout the venue. her vocal prowess. Hidden bridges lowered from the ceiling connect the four stages and enable some dramatic entrances. When the performer got word that her moving stage was malfunctioning before one of her Citi Field concerts in her hometown, New York City, Lady Gaga was undaunted. She told fans that she was planning to deliver her live performance regardless of the condition of the stage. In fact, when the skies opened up during the second show at Citi Field making stage conditions risky, Lady Gaga sang and danced throughout the downpour. The tour supports Lady Gaga’s fifth and newest studio album, Joanne, which was released last October. Joanne ranked in the top 10 of charts in 10 nations, including No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It is certified gold in Britain and Canada. Joanne was ranked on 2016’s year-end lists of the year’s best work: o No. 32 on Billboard’s list of 50 Best Albums o No. 7 on Rolling Stone’s 20 Best Pop Albums list o No. 20 on NME’s Album of the Year roster, and o No. 9 on Digital Spy’s ranking of the 20 Best Albums. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and also charted globally in nine other markets. It is platinum certified in the United States, Australia, Italy and Canada. This year has proven to be a busy one for Lady Gaga, starting with her Super Bowl halftime show and including the Coachella festival, shooting her first feature movie, supporting her charitable foundation, the Joanne World Tour and a documentary on the past year of her life. After wowing the crowd at Super Bowl L with her rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” Mother Monster returned to headline 2017’s Super Bowl halftime show, a production that was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Program. Her show opened with “God Bless America” and “This Land Is Your Land” performed high above the crowd filling NRG Stadium while artificial stars played in the sky. After making a spider-like dive onto a pedestal on the main stage far below, Lady Gaga performed hits spanning her career — “Poker Face” and “Just Dance” 2008, “Bad Romance” 2009, “Telephone” 2010, “Born This Way” and “Edge of Glory” 2011, and “Million Reasons” 2016. In April, Lady Gaga headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where she first performed “The Cure.” In the same time frame, she was filming scenes for A Star Is Born. The upcoming musical casts her in the female lead alongside Bradley Cooper, who also is directing the movie. It is scheduled for release in September 2018. Extras for A Star Is Born were required to dress in denim and western boots – and to donate $10 to the Born This Way Foundation. Established in 2012 with the goal of creating a kinder braver world, the Born This Way Foundation is led by the performer and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta. The foundation works to empower youth and inspire bravery. The celebrity’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Born This Way Foundation included teaming with Starbucks and Staples this year. In June, customers at one Starbuck’s store were surprised by Lady Gaga on barista duty in support of the foundation. The Joanne World Tour kicked off in August with shows in Vancouver and Edmonton in Canada. It headed to the Lower 48 for 14 shows, and then pingponged between Canada and the United States for several more concert dates before playing Brazil’s Rock in Rio festival in September. The Joanne World Tour scheduled 18 shows in 10 countries throughout Europe for five weeks from late September through October, and then 19 more shows in North America in November through mid-December. An HBO documentary covering a 12-month period from summer 2016 through the kickoff of the Joanne World Tour makes its debut this fall. It was nine years ago that Lady Gaga released her premier studio album, The Fame. It peaked in the top 3 of charts in nine nations, including the No. 1 spots in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Austria. Trans-Siberian Orchestra Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Winter Tour 2017 plays two performances at PPG Paints Arena on Dec. 22 at 3 and 8 p.m. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Trans-Siberian Orchestra has become a critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum, musical powerhouse, and its annual winter tours have become a holiday tradition for fans across generations. The 2017 tour celebrates the art and accomplishments of Paul O’Neill, the group’s late creator/composer/lyricist, and his inimitable creation, which he dubbed “rock theater.” Adhering to TSO’s reputation for showmanship and powerful staging elements including pyro techniques, lasers and other dramatic effects, this year’s concert tour delivers an updated presentation of “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” with new effects and staging. Prior to his untimely passing in April, O’Neill worked with his team to prepare an exciting new take on “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” for the 2017 tour. TSO’s soundtrack album of the same name was released in 2016. Set to begin on Nov. 16, the tour will visit more than 60 cities, and perform more than 100 shows before concluding on Dec. 30. Based on TSO’s multi-platinum DVD and long running PBS fundraiser, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” the rock opera features fan-favorites, including: o “Music Box Blues” o “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24” o “Promises to Keep,” and o “O’ Come All Ye Faithful” o “This Christmas Day.” o “Good King Joy” o “Christmas Canon” This year, the tour also will include a second set containing more of TSO’s greatest hits and fan-pleasers. Initially released in 1996, the track “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” was on TSO’s debut rock opera album, Christmas Eve and Other Stories, the first part of the band’s Christmas Trilogy. Harlem Globetrotters The Harlem Globetrotters make their 51st dayafter-Christmas appearance in Pittsburgh this year. New in 2017, the Globetrotters unveiled basketball’s first four-point line, a maneuver that comes six years after the team introduced the first four-point shot in the history of the sport. In its draft earlier this year, the Globetrotters chose six players: three celebrities and three college stand-outs. The Harlem Globetrotters Director of Player Personnel and Coach Sweet Lou Dunbar says, “Having players who can electrify fans with high flying ability is a tremendous trait, but they’ve got to go beyond that. Globetrotters need to be superstars off the court, as well, and we think we’ve scored a touchdown, hit a home run, and lassoed in the best in all those areas this year.” The three celebrities chosen for the team are: o Multi-sport star, Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman winner, two-time national champion quarterback at the University of Florida, firstround NFL draft pick, and member of the New York Mets’ Class A Columbia Fireflies, noted for his fundraising efforts in support of pediatric cancer patients and disadvantaged children Continued on page 56

Two stars from the 2017 College Slam Dunk Championship, Rodney Pryor, the contest champ, and A.J. The Globetrotters celebrity picks come from all walks of life and include international and U.S. superstars, Olympic champions and icons of sports and Hollywood. A global organization synonymous with family entertainment and basketball wizardry, the Globetrotters represent nine decades of breaking down barriers, goodwill acts, and a commitment to fans. Three Perennial Favorites To Brighten Holidays By: Pam Thompson

Three perennial holiday favorites return to PPG Paints Arena in late December to brighten the season for audiences of all ages. The diverse performance groups — Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the Harlem Globetrotters and WWE Holiday Tour have long histories of appearing at PPG Paints Arena and earlier at the Civic/Mellon Arena. It was 2003 when Tran-Siberian Orchestra first performed at Mellon Arena, and when the Pittsburgh Penguins moved to their new home at what is now PPG Paints Arena, the tour continued its annual visits. The Harlem Globetrotters began performing annually in Pittsburgh in 1961 when the Civic Arena opened. The basketball legends began playing at the Civic Arena on the day after Christmas in 1966. Fifty-one years later, the Globetrotters post-Christmas appearance continues at PPG Paints Arena as a well established holiday tradition. WWE performances, ever-popular with crowds at PPG Paints Arena, come to Pittsburgh two to three times a year. This year, the WWE Holiday Tour brings all of its action, Superstars and excitement to add to the year-end festivities. Continued on page 52
