Nominated for Favorite Group and Favorite Song for “Maps” in the 2015 People’s Choice Awards, Maroon 5 has sold more than 17 million albums around the world, and its releases have gone gold and platinum in more than 35 countries. Maroon 5 owns three Grammy Awards. It captured its first for Best New Artist in 2004 and followed with awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 2005 and 2007, for “This Love” and “Makes Me Wonder,” respectively. The group also has to its credit three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, and four Teen Choice Awards, as well as the 2004 World Music Award for Best New Group. A powerhouse in popular music, Maroon 5 has set an all-time record for the most No. 1 hits – six – by a group in the Top 40 chart’s 20-year history. The band played Las Vegas for shows at the end of last year. Maroon 5 made two appearances in last December’s new special, “A Very GRAMMY Christmas.” The group performed a medley of its trusty tune, “This Love” with “Animal” from V, and a cover of John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas.” The group performed “Animals” live last November on the NBC’s Emmy Award-winning reality competition series, “The Voice.” Promoting the new album and the 2015 world tour, Maroon 5 performed on Today for the Toyota Summer Concert Series, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, America’s Got Talent, Saturday Night Live, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Front man Levine, an original judge on “The Voice,” began his eighth cycle on the show this year. Both Levine and Blake Shelton have been judges on NBC’s Emmy Award-winning reality show since the contest began in 2011. Levine also is teaming with Boardwalk Entertainment for a 10-part series about the 1970s music industry, which is to feature contemporary performers re-recording hits from four decades ago. As a producer for the series, Levine reportedly is involved in all aspects of the production including the selection of music and casting. A presenter at last year’s Emmy Awards, Levine also appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as well as the Today Show, and Extra Tonight. Born and bred in Los Angeles, Maroon 5’s rock/R&B hybrid sound was introduced on its first two studio albums, Songs About Jane and its double platinum album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Its sophomore release included the hits “Makes Me Wonder” and “If I Never See Your Face Again.”
The album is described as “A sonic summation of the group’s journey to date . . .”

Maroon 5’s third studio album, Hands All Over, featured the hits “Misery” and “Moves Like Jagger.” Both songs received Grammy Award nominations for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals. “Moves Like Jagger,” one of the best sellers of all time, went to No. 1 on the Top 40 and Hot Adult Contemporary charts, as well as the top of the Billboard Hot 100. When “Moves Like Jagger” made the Hot 100 chart, it gave Levine the distinction of being the first artist in the 53-year history of the ranking to reach No. 1 as part of a group, and at the same time hitting the Top 10 as a soloist for “Stereo Hearts.” Levine co-wrote and was featured on the Gym Class Heroes single. In 2012, all of the singles on Maroon 5’s fourth studio album, Overexposed, went to the top of the charts. “Daylight,” the third single on the album went to No. 1 on the Top 40 and Hot Adult Contemporary radio charts. The tour supporting Overexposed was one of the year’s most successful, grossing more than $50 million. Tour guest, the Canadian reggae fusion band, MAGIC! released its first single, “Rude,” in 2013. The song peaked at No. 6 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart and enjoyed international success, topping charts in the United States and United Kingdom and peaking within the top ten of the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. Its second single, “Don’t Kill the Magic,” released last spring, made it to No. 22 on the Canadian Hot 100 and No. 53 in Australia. Its debut album, Don’t Kill the Magic, released last summer, peaked at No. 5 on the Canadian Albums Chart and No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Members of the group are Nasri, lead vocalist and guitarist, Mark Pellizzer, guitarist and backup vocalist, Alex Tanas, drummer and backup vocalist, and Ben Spivak, bassist and backup vocalist. Rozzi Crane, the first artist signed to Adam Levine’s 222 Records, is touring with Maroon 5 for the third time. She was a featured performer on Maroon 5’s 2013 Overexposed Tour, and she joined the group again the following summer on the Honda Civic Tour. Her first full length album is expected early this year. She studied at USC and was a member of the elite Popular Music program’s first class. In 2012, Crane broke onto the national scene with a feature on the No. 1 ranked “The Hunger Games” soundtrack’s Maroon 5/T-Bone Burnett song, “Come Away to the Water.”
“Moves Like Jagger,” Is one of the band’s all-time best selling singles.

FIRST NEIL DIAMOND PERFORMANCE SET FOR CONSOL ENERGY CENTER By: Pam Thompson Fans will be treated to the new and the classics when the NEIL DIAMOND TOUR 2015 brightens the Pittsburgh scene this spring. Celebrated rock/pop master singer and songwriter, Neil Diamond performs for the first time at CONSOL Energy Center on April 7. Known for poetic lyrics of love, loneliness and perseverance, Diamond an American icon is enjoyed by audiences worldwide. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Diamond, who will be 74 when he starts the tour, will visit three continents. He will tour North America through May before heading to Europe for summer performances in six countries and then on to Australia and New Zealand for fall concerts. The 29-show North American tour will include seven concerts across Canada, plus a performance in Mexico City, which will mark Diamond’s first time ever visiting or entertaining there. Writing and performing his music since the 1960s, Diamond released his 32nd studio album, Melody Road last fall. It made its debut in the Top 10 in the U.S. and Australia. Melody Road became Diamond’s 18th Top 10 album. The new album’s 11 tracks and title reprise provide Diamond fans with songs Continued on page 24

bound to become part of his collection of classics that have entertained the global audiences for five decades. Diamond’s voice, the lyrics, the instrumentals, all combine in the modern troubadour’s traditional style. Melody Road’s tracks are: o “Melody Road” o “First Time” o “Seongah and Jimmy” o “Something Blue” o “Nothing But a Heartache” o “In Better Days” o “(OOO) Do I Wanna Be Yours” o “Alone at the Ball” o “Sunny Disposition” o “Marry Me Now” o The Art of Love,” and o “Melody Road (Reprise)”. Diamond’s songs have been covered by artists ranging from Elvis Presley (“Sweet Caroline”) to UB40 (“Red Red Wine) and Deep Purple (“Kentucky Woman”). His soundtrack to the film, “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” grossed more than the movie, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart, and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture. Diamond first experienced success as a songwriter in 1965 when “Sunday and Me” became a Top 20 hit for Jay and the Americans. He also wrote “I’m a Believer,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow),” and “Love to Love,” which were successes for The Monkees. “I’m a Believer” was the Popular Music Song of 1966. A recipient of the prestigious Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriters, Diamond also is the winner of a 2011 Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime of contributions to American culture. He owns a Golden Globe Award, and was nominated three times for Golden Globe honors. He is the 2009 NARAS MusiCares Person of the Year. A Grammy Award-winning artist with 13 Grammy nominations, Diamond has charted 37 Top 40 singles and 16 Top 10 albums in the U.S. In 2008, his studio album, Home Before Dark, made its debut at No.1 in the U.S. and the UK on the Billboard Top Albums charts. He has sold more than 128 million albums worldwide and charted 56 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including 12 top 10 hits. On the Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, Diamond has had ten No. 1 singles: o “Cracklin’ Rosie” o “Song Sung Blue”

o “Longfellow Serenade” The Monkeys famous hit o “I’ve Been This Way Before” “I’m a Believer” o “If You Know What I Mean” - written by Diamond o “Desiree” was the Popular o “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” Music Song of 1966. o “America” o “Yesterday’s Songs” o “Heartlight,” and o “I’m a Believer.” His multi-platinum soundtrack for The Jazz Singer in 1980, earned him three Top 10 singles. Diamond describes Melody Road as a homecoming that brings him back to the start of his musical journey and the early influence of artists like the Weavers and Woody Guthrie. The songs on the album reflect his lifelong love of folk music. The vocals were recorded live, in much the same way they would have been if the album had been created decades ago, and while the instrumentation is lush, the arrangements are traditional. Diamond’s biography says that like the best folk songs, each of the album’s tracks tells a story, most pointedly on “Seongah and Jimmy,” a song about Diamond’s American brother-in-law and Korean sister-in-law, who met and fell in love before they had learned to speak each others’ languages. Despite the specificity of the song, it addresses a universal theme. He says that Melody Road is largely autobiographical, but the stories it tells are not his alone. He began working on Melody Road with several new songs, as well as a few that he had struggled to complete for more than ten years. He couldn’t find the motivation, or the willingness to address the subject matter that initially inspired them, or – in Diamond’s words – “They weren’t yet ready to be born.” With the support of his wife and manager, Katie, he completed those tracks. By the time he was ready to record, he had an album’s worth of songs ready to go. The record unfolds story by story, and song by song – the final sequence is exactly the same as the order of Diamond’s original demos for the album. Co-produced by Don Was (who has worked with Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones) and Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2), Melody Road was made with a group of master musicians, including pedal steel player Greg Liesz, keyboardist Benmont Tench, guitarist Smoky Hormel, and vocalists the Waters Family. Built on guitars, it’s true to the origin of folk, but it’s not defined by it; it was Continued on page 28

recorded with keyboards, flutes, horns, and, on “Seongah and Jimmy,” “The Art of Love,” and “Nothing But A Heartache,” a full string section. Yet, for all of its expansiveness and rich production, Melody Road is ultimately all about the songs. Diamond has brought five decades of extraordinary craftsmanship with him, but he’s returned to where he started, propelled by the simple joy of translating life into song. Four Christmas albums are included in Diamond’s 32 studio albums, and his body of work also includes eight live albums, 37 compilations and nearly 100 singles. Diamond was celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, and he headlined the centennial edition of the Royal Variety Performance that same year. His “Sweet Caroline,” is an eighth inning tradition at Red Sox games in Boston’s Fenway Park. In April 2013 at the first game after the Boston Marathon bombings, Diamond made an unannounced appearance singing “Sweet Caroline” live for the crowd. In July 2013, he released the single “Freedom Song (They’ll Never Take Us Down)” and 100 percent of the purchase price benefited the One Fund Boston and the Wounded Warrior Project. For Independence Day that year, Diamond performed live in Washington, D.C., on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the “A Capitol Fourth,” a PBS national broadcast.

Manilow’s first appearance at CONSOL Energy Center was almost two years ago. He has toured the world and performed thousands of concerts, including seven performances at the Pittsburgh Penguins former home, the Civic/Mellon Arena between 1980 and 2009. After performing more than 400 concerts at the Las Vegas Hilton and Paris Las Vegas from 2005 through 2011, he began limiting his live performances. Manilow released his latest album, MY DREAM DUETS, last October. The album made its debut at No. 4 and is the performer’s 15th Top 10 album. Recognizing that lots of artists have recorded duet albums, Manilow says that when he was approached about the project he began looking for a way to make his duets album “better” and “different.” Reviewing his personal list of “dream partners,” Manilow says, “They were all gone and that’s my list…All of the people that I had chosen are not with us anymore.” However, music technology enabled him to create his collection of songs that were never performed as duets with an eclectic group of late, great artists. Manilow says that he made 35 demos which resulted in the 11 duets on his album. The selections are: o “The Song’s Gotta Come From the Heart” with Jimmy Durante o “Goody Goody” with Frankie Lymon o “Dream a Little Dream of Me” with Mama Cass o “I Believe in You and Me” with Whitney Houston o “Sunshine on My Shoulders” with John Denver o “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart” with Judy Garland o “Moon River” with Andy Williams o “The Look of Love” with Dusty Springfield o “The Candy Man” with Sammy Davis, Jr. o “I Wanna Be Loved by You” with Marilyn Monroe, and o “What a Wonderful World” with Louis Armstrong. In online comments, fans applaud My Dream Duets for Manilow’s collection of partners, his voice and skill as an arranger, and the “magical” quality of the technical aspects of the album. Repeatedly, fans positively comment on the nostalgic aspect of the album. “My life has been one big miracle,” Manilow says. “I come from the world of trying to write a song that will outlive me. That’s every composer’s goal: to write such a wonderful song that will live forever.” His roots are in Brooklyn. While growing up there, music was an integral part of his life. By the age of seven, he was taking accordion lessons and playing a neighbor’s piano. Choosing a career in music while still in his teens, he attended New York College of Music and the Julliard School of Music while working in the mailroom at CBS. He subsequently became musical director for a CBS show named “Callback” (the predecessor of American Idol) which led to a lucrative sideline Continued on page 34

on New York’s advertising jingle circuit. Manilow produced four albums for Bette Midler ranging from “The Divine Miss M” in 1972 to “Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook” in 2005. He also has produced albums for Diane Schuur, Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson. Manilow’s autobiography, “Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise” was published in 1987 when he was 44. Nearly three full decades since writing his memoir, Manilow has more than enough material for a second installment of his life story. o He has done eight more television specials for a total of 12. o In 2006, he won his second Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for “Manilow: Music and Passion” on PBS. o He scored and composed music for three movies. o In 2002, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. o In January 2013, Manilow returned to Broadway with his concert series “Manilow on Broadway.” It was his first appearance on Broadway in more than two decades. o On July 4, 2013, Manilow performed live on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol as part of “A Capitol Fourth,” which was his second appearance on the popular PBS program. o In November 2013, he performed at the BBC’s “Children in Need Rocks 2013.” o In March 2014, Manilow released Night Songs. An album of standards performed only with his own piano and synthesized acoustic bass accompaniment. Winner of two Emmys, a Tony, a Grammy for “Copacabana,” and three American Music Awards – all for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist – Manilow’s career entered the mainstream of music entertainment when his mega hit song, “Mandy,” topped the charts in 1975. In recognition of that milestone 40 years ago, ticket prices for the ONE LAST TIME! Tour start at $19.75. Exclusive VIP Packages are available, as well as VIP packages that include limited edition memorabilia, VIP parking, and more. According to concert promoter AEG Live, Manilow insists that the average ticket price remain low and that a greater range of ticket prices be available. | 34 |

LINKIN PARK TOUR INCLUDES RISE AGAINST, OF MICE & MEN By: Pam Thompson
Linkin Park, the Grammy-Award-winning, multi-platinum alternative rock band, brings The Hunting Party Tour, featuring special guests, Rise Against and Of Mice & Men to CONSOL Energy Center. The month-long North American leg of the tour brings Linkin Park to Pittsburgh and several cities that haven’t seen Linkin Park in the past several years. “Rock music was born in these towns, and for some reason these places tend to get overlooked much more than they should. We want our fans there to know how much they matter to us,” says Chester Bennington, lead vocalist of Linkin Park. “After crossing paths with these guys at festivals around the world over the past decade, we’re excited to finally share the road with Linkin Park,” adds Tim Mcllrath, lead vocalist/ guitarist of Rise Against. “We think this will be a great experience for all our collective fans.” Continued on page 39

After 15 years and six albums, Rise Against has sold four million albums globally across their last four releases. Endgame made its 2011 debut at No. 1 in Germany and Canada, and No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard album chart. The group’s current album, The Black Market made its debut at No. 3 on the Billboard Top 200 chart last September. Austin Carlile, Of Mice and Men joined Linkin Park on stage in Los Angeles during the band’s successful Carnivores Tour last summer. “We are really excited to be joining Linkin Park on The Hunting Party Tour. I performed the song ‘Faint’ with them recently at The Hollywood Bowl and it was incredible. Can’t wait to bring that experience to all our dedicated fans across America,” said Carlile. “The opportunity to tour with a band that inspired me to pursue music is mind-blowing, and that’s exactly what we want fans to experience when they see us together on tour.” Since the 2010 release of their self-titled debut, the Orange County, Calif.based quintet, Of Mice & Men has blanketed rock radio airwaves, garnered critical acclaim, and amassed more than 20 million YouTube views and close to 5 million social media followers. They’re touring in support of their newest album, Restoring Force, which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and No. 1 on both the Billboard Top Independent and Top Rock Albums charts. Linkin Park began The Hunting Party Tour in Europe last fall in front of soldout venues with Of Mice & Men. The Hunting Party, Linkin Park’s sixth studio album, was released last June and reached No. 1 on iTunes in 67 countries. Linkin Park members along with Bennington are: o Mike Shinoda, vocals, rhythm guitar, “Rock music keyboard, piano o Brad Delson, lead guitar was born in o Dave Farrell, bass these towns” o Joe Hahn, turntables, samples, keyboard, programming, and o Rob Bourdon, drums and percussion. Since releasing its debut album, Hybrid Theory, in 2000, Linkin Park has been known for delivering a distinctive style of music while exploring new musical and production techniques. in Grammy Awards for 2002’s Best Hard Rock Performance for “Crawling” and 2006’s Best Rap/Song Collaboration for “Numb/Encore” with Jay Z. Eight of Linkin Park’s albums have charted in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, and the group has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. The Hunting Party features 12 tracks co-written by the band, including the debut single “Guilty All The Same,” which stayed at No. 1 on the Active Rock chart for three weeks. Co-produced by Shinoda and Delson along with Grammy winner Rob Cavallo, the album’s guest artists include rapper Rakim, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, Helmet’s Page Hamilton, and System Of A Down’s Daron Malakian. Shinoda says, “I’ve stretched myself to see how many different styles and genres I can write in. But underneath it all, the melody and lyrics are key.” Explaining the origin of the album, Shinoda says, “I made some ‘alternative pop’ demos that sounded like they would fit in with what radio is currently playing. But then I came across a blog piece entitled ‘Rock Sucks Right Now and its Really Depressing.’ It got me thinking…I ended up writing a response to it, and realized that what I had been working on wasn’t really what I wanted to be making.” Shinoda says that he decided to lead the band in a harder-edged direction, innovating by reverting to the style of music that inspired them to become a band in the first place. “When I think of myself at 15,” Shinoda says, “I think of emotions being so raw and illogical. It hadn’t been watered down by experience. I liked music that Continued on page 42

was lyrically or sonically offensive,” he says remembering that he enjoyed whatever would irritate his parents. “We had to get back in touch with that in order to make this record,” he says. Delson says, “We had to figure out how to reimagine that in a postmodern way.” He adds, “We wanted to do something progressive and that only we could do.” “I think one of the successes of the record is that those attitudes congealed,” Delson says. “There’s an intimacy and an energy when we play together that I think this record captures,” says Shinoda of The Hunting Party. It is the band’s first self-produced work, as well as the first time to rely heavily on analog tape recording, minimally altered. Shinoda says, “The process of recording to tape and preserving the best performances was definitely one of the things that gives The Hunting Party its sound.” Some have described The Hunting Party as a prequel to Linkin Park’s first album, Hybrid Theory, but Delson explains, “It’s not a return to a style or sound; it’s a return to an ethos and inspiration — one that predates us coming together as a band. It’s the result of a hunger for music that we’re not hearing anyone doing.”

SEGER’S RIDE OUT TOUR STOPS IN PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson
Here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin’ star again There I go Turn the page From “Turn the Page” by Bob Seger
To the delight of fans, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band are on the road again with the RIDE OUT TOUR which includes a concert at CONSOL Energy Center. The tour supports Seger’s first new studio album in eight years, RIDE OUT. Enshrined in the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame, Seger says that he enjoys touring. While he has logged many miles and live shows in recent years, the RIDE OUT TOUR will be his most extensive string of concerts since his Face The Promise Tour that spanned 2006-2007. His joy of performing is evident at his concerts like the one in Saginaw, Mich., his home state, where he opened the RIDE OUT TOUR last fall. Silver-haired and bespectacled, Seger maintains a stage presence similar to that of his performances in the ‘70s when his hair was dark and flowing over his shoulders. He apparently has as much fun as anyone and his stage style still includes encouraging crowds to sing along, focusing the audience on musicians’ solos, and punctuating songs with fists thrown high. Serenading audiences since his high school days, Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, which formed in 1974, continue to deliver the kind of music that fans fell for when the group broke into the mainstream of the music industry four decades ago. Members of The Silver Bullet Band have changed over the years. More than a dozen musicians, play in concert with Seger. Only he and three others are listed as members of the band on his web site — Alto Reed, saxophonist, who played the intro on “Turn the Page” and the solo on “Old Time Rock and Roll,” Craig Frost, keyboardist, and Chris Campbell, bassist. All Michigan natives, Reed and Campbell with Seger were original members of the band, and Frost came on in ’79. Seger & The Silver Bullet Band began the tour last fall for fans across the U.S. and Canada, following the release of RIDE OUT, his 17th studio album and his first new studio album since his 2006 platinum certified album, Face The Promise. “I’m real excited about the album,” Seger says, “I hope the fans like it. We worked real hard on it.” Produced by Seger in Nashville in collaboration with more than 20 professional musicians and contributions from almost as many composers, musical technicians, photographers and designers, RIDE OUT features a mix of new songs and some covers, like “Detroit Made,” written and originally recorded by John Hiatt, “California Stars,” from the Wilco and Billy Bragg collaboration album, and “The Devil’s Right Hand” from Steve Earle. RIDE OUT stays true to Seger’s legendary sound, marrying rock, blues and country, as well as the plain-talking unpretentiousness that are Seger characteristics. | 46 |

“This album touches on how I think a lot of us feel about finding our place in a more complicated world – from how we appreciate things as simple and pure as love, to navigating through the corruption and violence that permeates the news,” Seger says. “It sums up a lot of feelings I have about a variety of subjects.” Those subjects include gun violence and protecting the environment. Discussing “The Devil’s Right Hand,” one of the covers on RIDE OUT, Seger says that the message that he gets is a mother’s warning to her child on gun violence. He says that he first heard the song in the movie, “Betrayed” more than 25 years ago. It’s written by one of Seger’s favorite songwriters, Steve Earle, and in the film it was performed by Waylon Jennings. Calling Earle’s song and Jennings’ performance a “powerful combination,” Seger says, “We really tried to stay real true to Waylon’s version.” Seger says that two songs on RIDE OUT address global warming – “It’s Your World,” and “The Fireman’s Talkin’,” exclusive to the deluxe edition of the album. Referring to “It’s Your World,” Seger says that he is concerned about the future of the planet for his children who are young adults. “The Earth is all we’ve got and we should really make an effort and be concerned about taking care of it, and that is the point of the song,” he says. The tune’s lyrics include the phrase, “All these children have to face our mess some day.” The track, “You Take Me In” was a surprise gift to Seger’s wife. He kept that recording a secret for three years until RIDE OUT was released. RIDE OUT’s standard version has 10 tracks and a deluxe edition comes with three additional songs. Continued on page 50

The standard tracks include: o “Detroit Made” o “Hey Gypsy” o “The Devil’s Right Hand” o “Ride Out” o “Adam and Eve” o “California Stars” o “It’s Your World”
o “All of the Roads” o “You Take Me In,” and o “Gates of Eden.” The deluxe tracks are: o “Listen” o “The Fireman’s Talkin,’’ and o “Let the Rivers Run.”
Seger’s music has played roles in films including “Forrest Gump,” “Risky Business” and “Beverly Hills Cop II.” He says that “Like a Rock,” is the only song that he has ever authorized for a commercial. It has become the long-running, emblematic theme song advertising GM trucks. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s live performances have led to record sales in excess of 52 million including 13 platinum and seven multi-platinum RIAA-certified album sales awards. Seger holds the distinction in 2010 for the No. 1 Catalog Album of the Decade for his Greatest Hits, which has sold more than 9 million copies in the U.S. alone. | 50 |

PITTSBURGH PLANNERS TO HOST MARCH MADNESS TO REMEMBER By: Pam Thompson
When NCAA March Madness comes to Pittsburgh this year, local planners are shooting to make it an event that long will be remembered by student athletes, fans and the community at large as a pinnacle of collegiate basketball and a shining moment for the city. Pittsburgh is one of eight cities across the country hosting NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championship Second and Third Rounds this year. It is the second time since 2012 that CONSOL Energy Center will be a venue for the venerable contest to play out on March 19 and 21. It will result in two teams advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. Duquesne University, the host school, VisitPITTSBURGH and CONSOL Energy Center have collaborated to establish the city’s reputation as a locale suitable for the first-rate type of experience that NCAA wants to present to the world. It was announced last fall that for the third time, NCAA championships will come to Pittsburgh and CONSOL Energy Center in 2018. Philip Racicot, Duquesne University’s tournament director for the event says that the championships are “one of the most talked about sporting events of the year. It’s an opportunity to see it live and in-person.” Continued on page 64

“Not knowing exactly which teams will play in any host location is part of the excitement,” Racicot says, adding that fans might get to see an upset by an underdog, and the team that will go on to take the ultimate prize. Tim Hassett, general manager of CONSOL Energy Center says, “We’re excited that the NCAA has selected Pittsburgh and CONSOL Energy Center to host preliminary round games of the men’s basketball tournament in 2018, and we are very much looking forward to hosting preliminary round games this season, in 2015. It’s a great opportunity for our fans to see the highest level of men’s college basketball.” Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH says, “When March Madness comes to Pittsburgh, we will be hosting a great event for residents and visitors alike. This will also have tremendous impact on our local economy through spending by out-of-town attendees. And this event will set the stage for future opportunities with the NCAA, while developing this prestigious organization as an advocate that will recommend Pittsburgh to other event organizers.” He adds, “A major factor contributing to the success of high-profile event hosting deals with partnership. marketing team, provide a cohesive partnership that comes seamlessly together to meet the specific needs of even the most demanding event owner.” Racicot says, “Being selected two times, clearly says that we did a great job three years ago. To be selected three times says we, as a host, have done the work to provide exactly what NCAA is looking for.” This is good news for the community. According to Davis, “In 2012, we estimated that March Madness was responsible for more than $7.1 million in direct spending to the local economy. With the national and international media exposure that comes with March Madness, it’s a great opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh to media and fans. Visitors who may not yet be familiar with how awesome Pittsburgh is today will get to experience it firsthand.” “It is the epitome of the excitement of college basketball,” says Racicot, adding, “It’s an opportunity to show pride in Pittsburgh and to provide access to a great event.” Prioritizing goals, Racicot focuses on the competing teams, “You are always mindful of the students’ experience. I think when you are hosting a championship event, we want to make it a priority for the student athletes. They are at the pinnacle of their careers. It’s a big deal – it’s a championship level event. They need to be able to look back and say ‘It’s the best college basketball experience I’ve had.’” Raciot also focuses on the fan experience, “Pittsburgh is a tremendous sports city with a tremendous sports facility – CONSOL Energy Center. We want a really positive experience. We want to put on a great show. Obviously, we want the fans to look back favorably on the experience. The game is important as is the crowd experience, the atmosphere, the excitement. It all works together.” Citing Pittsburgh hospitality, hotels and restaurants as being key to the success of the city’s bids for NCAA events, Racicot says, “We have accessibility, amenities and competitive hotel rates. There is a financial aspect to this. If we don’t have competitive hotel rates, we don’t get to host.” Davis agrees, “Pittsburgh is simply perfect for this event. We’ve got a state-of-the-art venue, extremely knowledgeable event staff and a cohesive hospitality community. Add to that the ease of access to Pittsburgh and the quality and experience of Local Organizing Committee members, and you have the ideal location for NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship Second and Third Rounds.”

“Great basketball in a great city,” says Davis. “Hopefully, we’ll have the same fantastic weather as 2012. This will enable the teams and fans to explore many of the really interesting sights and attractions in “It is the epitome of Pittsburgh.” the excitement of Guests coming to college basketball.” Pittsburgh to celebrate March Madness might want to consider extending their visits. The city has been cited as a destination by The Travel Channel and Esquire Magazine, and it continues to receive accolades for its affordability, recreation and arts, views, safety, and livability. The Travel Channel named Pittsburgh one of the best all-American vacations in 2014, citing the city for its young people and being an arts destination with institutions such as the Andy Warhol Museum and the Mattress Factory. Calling Pittsburgh “one of the hippest cities in America…located in the great expanse of western Pennsylvania,” it notes the Carnegie Museums, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, and Ohiopyle State Park for thrilling whitewater.” Esquire Magazine calls Pittsburgh a must-visit, stating, “Like a hipper, organic, authentic version of the cool downtown area near you with the bricks, only they have more bars, better food, and a brilliant arts scene.” Continued on page 68

‘PRIDE OF PITTSBURGH’ EVENTS WRITE NEW BOXING CHAPTERS By: Pam Thompson
New chapters in Pittsburgh’s rich boxing history are being written by the legendary Mike Tyson and his Iron Mike Productions at CONSOL Energy Center. Following up on two highly successful “Pride of Pittsburgh” events last year that featured up and coming talent from southwestern Pennsylvania, additional boxing shows at CONSOL Energy Center are being planned. Tyson says, “Pittsburgh is a historic boxing city going back to the early 1900s. Once we signed Sammy Vasquez Jr., we decided to promote the fight in Pittsburgh because we knew his fans would come out to support him. The response has been great! Almost 4,000 people attended this last event and we only expect that to grow.” Sammy “The Who Can Mexican” Vasquez Jr. of Monessen, Pa., and Monty Meza Clay who grew up in Rankin, Pa., thrilled their hometown audiences in two Pride of Pittsburgh events in 2014, and both of them are dreaming big, boxing dreams.

“Being part of Pride of Pittsburgh boxing means “everything.”
Briefly assessing local boxing talent, Iron Mike says, “Sammy Vasquez Jr. is an exciting TV fighter who leaves everything in the ring. At 17-0, 13 KOs, he is quickly beginning to be recognized nationwide as a serious boxing contender. If he stays on track and keeps winning we expect him to fight for a major world title in 2015 or early 2016.” Tyson says, “Monty Clay is also a TV fighter because he fights with an aggressive action style that leaves the audience at the edge of their seats. His last two fights should be considered as fights of the year.” Both Vasquez and Clay are promoted by Iron Mike Productions. Tyson also commented on another local boxer from Bunola, Pa., “Rod Salka is a classic boxer with speed and a high boxing IQ. He was able to out point Monty Clay despite the enormous amount of pressure Clay was able to put on Salka.” Vasquez and Meza Clay both say that being part of Pride of Pittsburgh boxing means “everything” to them. Clay says, “In my case, it’s home ring advantage, and it feels good to be able to show off for my family and friends.” Vasquez, a Pennsylvania National Guard veteran who served two tours in Iraq, concurs, “It means everything. I think boxing was a little dormant for a while in Pittsburgh. We’re getting a lot more action now.” He credits Iron Mike Productions for reawakening local interest in boxing. “Bringing boxing to Pittsburgh was a big thing for me.” Vasquez says of his fans, “They’re the reason I’m here today. Without the fans, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I deeply appreciate them and their help to bring the sport back to Pittsburgh.” Clay agrees and says to his fans, “Please keep coming. I need you in the seats – just like you’ve been doing – to get to the next level.” Vasquez says of his career goals, “Any boxer’s main goal is to become a world champion.” He says that as a champion, “I want to have a positive impact on bullies and bullying victims by using boxing to bring attention to the issues of bullying.” Vasquez began to box after being bullied as a 9-year-old on a school bus. “When I got home and told my dad, he took me to a local gym and I learned to box,” Vasquez says. He would like to influence victims of bullying – as well as those who bully – “by encouraging kids to drive in a more positive direction.” Victims and aggressors of bullying need help, understanding and motivation to do that, Vasquez says. “I want boxing to be a shining bit of light,” Vasquez says, and he dreams of boxing having a pyramid effect to show others a better way, and for those who benefit from the sport to pass the benefits on to others. Clay also is fixed on a winning career. With his winnings, he is saving and | 72 |

investing for the future of his daughter who turned five last November, just a day after the Pride of Pittsburgh II event. For kids interested in the sport, Vasquez says, “Go for it! It is a fun thing to learn. It’s definitely something that I would encourage.” He encourages new boxers to set goals for themselves – like Golden Gloves for amateur youth. Likewise, Clay advises youngsters interested in boxing, “Do it! Boxing can change your life.” Advantages of participating include discipline, patience, perseverance, structure, and an outlet for anger, he says. Referring to the lessons that he has learned from boxing, Vasquez lists three benefits — “It teaches discipline. It creates self esteem. It encourages teamwork.” Vasquez says his dad, Sam Vasquez Sr., “as a man and as a father,” is his role model. Clay’s parents, Ramont and Yolanda Clay are his role models. “They showed me. They didn’t just tell me. They sacrificed for me,” Clay says. While his parents couldn’t give him a lot of material things, he says that they provided a good home life. In regard to future of Pride of Pittsburgh matches, Tyson says, “We would love to get Paul Spadafora for our next events. We tried before but schedules wouldn’t permit it. We are also looking for other local fighters as well. Pittsburgh has a rich boxing community and we will continue to monitor it for any opportunities available for IMP.” Spadafora, known as “The Pittsburgh Kid,” hails from McKees Rocks, Pa. He is a former International Boxing Federation Lightweight champion.
“Pride of Pittsburgh” events last year were highly successful and we only expect them to grow.” | 74 |
The colorful history of boxing in Pittsburgh includes: - the “Fighting Zivics,” five brothers from Lawrenceville - Fritzie Zivic, “The Patron Saint of Dirty Fighters” - Harry Greb, a 1930s World middleweight champion, known as “The Pittsburgh Windmill,” and - the original “Pittsburgh Kid,” Billy Conn. The Zivics grew up in Lawrenceville, and Fritzie is quoted as saying, “You either had to fight or stay in the house. We went out.” Arguably the most famous Pittsburgh area boxer also was the first to be known as “The Pittsburgh Kid,” William David “Billy” Conn. Conn, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, fought in the ‘30s and ‘40s, and became a light heavyweight champion. He was famous for his fights with Joe Louis. He logged 63 wins, 11 losses and 1 draw, with 14 wins by knockout. A friend of his contemporary, Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Conn has a Pittsburgh street named for him, and he is referenced in movies including “On the Waterfront,” HBO documentaries, and popular music. In 1990, in his early 70s, Conn threw a punch to thwart a convenience store robber. He pulled off the robber’s coat in an ensuing scuffle which led to the suspect’s arrest.
