CHER’S NEW TOUR COMES TO PITTSBURGH ON APRIL 2 By: Pam Thompson

Cher comes to Pittsburgh this spring with her “Dressed To Kill” North American Tour on April 2, and if history matters, the tour’s chances of success are guaranteed. Fans are hungry for Cher’s 2014 tour. It is her first since “The Farewell Tour,” also known as “The Never Can Say Goodbye Tour,” which delivered 325 shows from 2003 to 2005. Playing to more than three million fans, it became the most successful tour by any female artist. Her new tour follows the debut of her 26th studio album “Closer To The Truth” last fall. It is her first album in 12 years. Enthralled fans in adoring posts call Cher “goddess” and “diva” and describe her as “amazing,” “fantastic,” “beautiful,” and “ageless.” She is as famous for acting as for her singing and outrageous costumes. Cher has been a worldwide superstar for almost 50 years. She is an Academy Award winning actress, Emmy and Grammy winner, three-time Golden Globe winner, Cannes Film Festival Award winner, and People’s Choice Award winner. Continued on page 4

Indications are that 2014 might be one of those years when Cher is “the coolest thing that ever happened.” |3|

Cher’s role as Loretta Castorini in “Moonstruck” in 1987 won her the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Her notable film performances include “Silkwood” alongside Meryl Streep, “Mask” with Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott, “The witches of Eastwick” with Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon and Michele Pfeiffer, and “Suspect” with Dennis Quaid. She co-executive produced and directed a segment of “If Walls Could Talk,” the controversial HBO abortion drama with Sissy Spacek and Anne Heche, earning another Golden Globe nomination for her acting. Cher is the only artist to have Number One songs in six decades. Her most recent is “Woman’s World,” the first track on “Closer To The Truth,” which reached Number One on the Billboard Club Play Chart. She has sold more than 100 million records around the world. On “Closer To The Truth” she says, “I’m not a huge Cher fan, but having said that I think it’s good.” Talking about “Woman’s World,” Cher says, “Yes, it is an anthem about women being strong. We’ve made great strides but the song gives you an extra boost and it’s fun. I love the line, ‘ALL THE WOMEN IN THE CLUB STAND UP’ – Sisterhood!” “Woman’s World” was the album’s first single to enter Billboard’s Dance Club Songs Chart last July and climbed to the top spot to become Cher’s eighth Number One on the chart. Cher says, “This was the first song I recorded for my “Cher topped the album…early on I got U.S. Hot 100: before a bunch of songs and I went for ‘Woman’s World’ Barbra Streisand did, immediately…I recorded it before Michael at my house – stood in front Jackson, Elton John, of a microphone and did it in an hour. It almost sang David Bowie and itself – kind of like ‘Turn Back Rod Stewart were Time’ was for me.” famous; and before The new album also includes the tracks: Celine Dion and o “Take It Like a Man” Mariah Carey were o “My Love” even born.” o “Dressed to Kill” o “Red” o “Lovers Forever” o “I Walk Alone” o “Sirens” o “Favorite Scars” o “I Hope You Find It” and o “Lie to Me.” Continued on page 6 |4|

Continued from page 4

“Take It Like A Man” entered Billboard’s Dance Club Songs Chart before the end of last year and it features Cher’s own lyrics. Cher says of this song, “I loved it the moment I heard it…I like the whole feeling of the song, the melody and of course the message can be taken in so many ways which makes it very funny.” It’s been a decade since Cher appeared in Pittsburgh on her “Farewell Tour.” One of the most successful tours ever by a solo artist, it played for a record-breaking 325 dates and was seen by more than 5.5 million people. For some perspective on Cher’s career, her biography on The Cher News website states: “Cher topped the U.S. Hot 100: before Barbra Streisand did, before Michael Jackson, Elton John, David Bowie and Rod Stewart were famous; and before Celine Dion and Mariah Carey were even born.” “She had solo hits before Tina Turner and Diana Ross did, and had reinvented herself multiple times (from folk-rock hippie, glamorous TV host, disco diva, rock chick to serious actress) before Madonna had even released her first single. “Her music has been covered by a range of artists from Frank Sinatra to Britney Spears. “And she broke barriers in censorship and style to pave the way for generations of outlandish female starlets such as Cyndi Lauper, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga.” Cher says, “Some years I’m the coolest thing that ever happened, and the next year everyone’s so over me.” Indications are that 2014 might be one of those years when Cher is “the coolest thing that ever happened.” With her distinct contralto, Cher is known for her ability to convey whatever emotion a song requires and her newest album verifies that the artist moves easily from “Lie to Me,” a heartfelt ballad by Pink, to “Take It Like A Man,” the dance floor extravaganza, and “Sirens,” and anthem to 9/11. Also known for her wardrobe with its outlandish wigs, masks and all forms of materials that sparkle, Cher says, “I wear my clothes, my clothes don’t wear me.” Continued on page 8

. . . Cher is a goddess, so normal, so human, so real and funny and friendly and fabulous.

Continued from page 6

Her sense of fashion individuality manifested itself early when Cher was suspended from school in the eighth grade for wearing sunglasses in class. Cher also is known for being able to laugh at herself and for taking witty, less than flattering shots at herself. On this point a fan comments online, “My favorite thing about her has always been that she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s totally selfdeprecating and I think that’s been the key to her long lasting success. She’s always the one out front making fun of herself before others can get a chance.” Another fan says, “I adore how grounded Cher is,” and yet another says, “I’m glad a star of Cher’s magnitude and profile is so real and not pretentious.” Commenting online about a Cher interview, a fan writes, “She’s in her PJs and taking off her shoes mid-interview. This is why Cher is a goddess, so normal, so human, so real and funny and friendly and fabulous.” Proving the point, Cher shares a story about her Las Vegas experience: “I’m standing backstage frightened out of my mind saying ‘I can’t do this.’ Then my choreographer tells me, If God didn’t want you to do this, he wouldn’t have looked down on your cradle and said, ‘Sequins.’” Her sense of humor, humility and ability to carry off even the most unusual wardrobe choices on and off the stage seem central to Cher’s being. Continued on page 11

Continued from page 9

Asked if she would change anything about her life, Cher exclaims without hesitation and a sort of enthusiasm, “Millions of things!” When a discussion on regrets and things that she would like to change came around to her comments on Miley Cyrus’ MTV Awards performance, Cher says, “Famous people feel that they need to open their mouth if someone asks them something.” Cher continues, “She (Cyrus) is doing what’s right for her audience.” Then Cher recalls a controversial performance of her own — “I sat on huge guns on a battleship in dental floss.” In regard to her longevity as a performer, Cher also comments, “I’m so old as you know…When you get to be our age, we’ve made a lot of mistakes, but you just keep going.” In another case, Cher says, “Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.” Doing “Woman’s World” live on the Today Show last fall, which coincided with the release of “Closer To The Truth” and the announcement of her 2014 tour, Cher arrived with a police motorcycle escort. More accurately – she rode on the back of a police motorcycle with another pair of police motorcycles flanking her ride. She wore a silver, chrome-finished helmet and for her performance a black and white pants outfit that would make some women ask, “Does this make me look fat?” It was her first ever live morning television performance for the entertainer who says that she is “not a morning person.” “I wanted to be a singer so I didn’t have to get up early,” Cher explains adding, “When you’re doing movies, you have to do it, but that’s worth it. But no – singers don’t do that unless they stay up all night long.” Cher remembers deciding that she wanted to become famous at the age of 4. “If you are going to wait for someone to encourage you to do something, you better give it up,” she says. Discussing her philosophy on life, Cher says, “For better or worse, I never plan my life. I focus on today. I love spontaneity. That is what has put me in some strange and wonderful places in my life.” Asked what makes a perfect day for her, Cher replies without hesitation, “Being with my friends – wherever.” Pausing for a split second she adds, “not being around any paparazzi.” Then thinking for a few more seconds she adds, “I’d like to ride my motorcycle again because I really miss that. I think that would be a perfect day for me, or being in Hawaii or Tahiti.”

Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.

HEADLINE-MAKING JAY Z BRINGS TOUR TO PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson

Rap and hip hop sensation Jay Z continues his Magna Carter World Tour in 2014, including a performance at CONSOL Energy Center. Jay Z turned 44 on his last birthday, and within a three-day period, he made headlines for three different reasons: o Being nominated for more Grammy Awards than any other performer o Landing a landmark contract as a sports agent for Robinson Cano, and o Starting a vegan diet. First, the performer was newsworthy when Grammy Award nominations were announced. Jay Z received nine nominations for the music industry’s highest honors – more than any other entertainer. The second story had to do with one of Jay Z’s business ventures. In his relatively new role as sports agent, Jay Z made waves — let’s say a tsunami — by landing a $240 million contract for baseball’s Robinson Cano to move to the Seattle Mariners from the New York Yankees. The Cano contract is the third largest free agent contract in baseball history. Cano is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports after choosing to leave super agent Scott Boras. Boras has the distinction of negotiating the first and second largest contracts in baseball for Alex Rodriguez.

Jay Z received nine Grammy Award nominations for the music industry’s highest honors – more than any other entertainer.

The third story was that Jay Z and his superstar wife, Beyonce, were starting a vegan or “plant-based” diet, the 22 Days Challenge. Jay Z announced the new diet on his website — lifeandtimes.com. The announcement then went on to play in the media and become a topic of online conversation by his fans, her fans, vegans and those embracing plant-based diets. Coverage ranged from Forbes, the LA Times and Huffington Post to Shape Magazine and the U.K.’s Daily Mail. The conversation was fueled in part by proponents of specific diet philosophies, in part by fans of anything of interest to the golden couple, and in part by a request in Jay Z’s post – “Any professional vegans out there that have any great food spots please help out!” Happy is the vegan restaurant owner introduced to Jay Z and Beyonce, and fans suggested many. These three vastly different topics are totally indicative of the influence that Jay Z wields in the music industry, business and society. A native of Brooklyn, Jay Z, born Shawn Carter, is best known for his music career. His work is considered to have pioneered and shaped the rap and hip hop genres. His most recent Grammy nominations were for songwriting, solo performances and separate collaborations with Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, as well as best rap album for “Magna Carta…Holy Grail,” and best rap song for “Holy Grail.” Leading up to 2014, Jay Z has won 17 Grammy Awards for his albums, collaborations, songs, song of the year and record of the year. He has received 60 Grammy nominations in his career. He was nominated for the People’s Choice Awards 2014 Favorite Hip Hop Artist. He was in contention with Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the honor. Nominated nine times, Jay Z has won three American Music Awards – twice for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist and for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album for “The Blueprint 3.”

Platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America follow Jay Z’s recordings like dawn follows night. Every one of his studio albums has been certified platinum. In 2013, “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” went platinum twice for Jay Z since its release last July, as well as to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. Jay Z has sold more than 50 million albums internationally and established himself in the entertainment business as a performer, label executive and producer. He also received excellent reviews for the sold out “Legends Of The Summer” stadium tour with Justin Timberlake. His second annual two-day Budweiser Made In America festival was called a “smashing success” by “Rolling Stone, which said it is “emerging as one of the top festivals on and increasingly crowded circuit.” With more than 80 music videos in his portfolio, last year Jay Z released two more “Picasso Baby” and “Holy Grail” featuring Justin Timberlake, and he was featured on two others, Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie,” and Just Blaze & Baauer’s “Higher.” Ten years ago, Jay Z released “The Black Album,” and used words like “retirement,” “farewell,” and “final” to describe that studio album. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to call his plans for the next decade as “growing,” “expanding,” and “exploring.” “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” and the Magna Carter World Tour came 10 years after the entertainer’s “retirement.” The most recent decade also yielded Continued on page 31

his albums, “Unfinished Business,” “Kingdom Come,” “American Gangster,” “The Blueprint 3,” and “Watch the Throne” with Kanye West. Jay Z grew up in a housing project with his three siblings. They were raised by their single mother. As a young rapper, Jay Z began to get noticed in 1989 when he recorded “The Originators,” with his mentor Jaz-O. It was around this time that Shawn Carter began performing as “Jay-Z.” The name acknowledged his respect for Jaz-O and played on his childhood nickname, “Jazzy.” Best known for his stellar music career, Jay Z has been successful in sports and other business ventures also. Like his flow of recordings, there seemingly is no end to his entrepreneurial business ventures. In 1996 with two friends, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke, Jay Z formed Roc-A-Fella Records and released his first album, “Reasonable Doubt” that same year. In a Facebook post last November, “Gold Jay Z,” his first ever fragrance was introduced. It’s available in specialty department stores throughout the U.S. Rocawear is his urban clothing line for men, women and children. He is a co-owner of the 40/40 Club, the upscale sports bar with locations in New York City and Brooklyn at Barclays Center. A piece of Barclays Center in Brooklyn belongs to Jay Z. He relinquished ownership of his reportedly small share of its resident team, the NBA’s Nets, to pursue his career as a sports agent. Jay Z reportedly was involved in marketing the Nets’ move from New Jersey to Brooklyn, and he was the first to model the team’s new uniform during one of his concerts. Jay Z also is planning to expand his sports agent enterprise to professional football and basketball, as well as baseball. He has ventured into beauty products with Carol’s Daughter. He published his New York Times bestselling memoir, “Decoded” in 2010, which includes a collection of his lyrics and the stories behind them. Jay Z’s Magna Carter World Tour helps to kick off Pittsburgh’s 2014 entertainment scene. The show at CONSOL Energy Center is part of Jay Z’s extended North American arena tour, following its international performances. Magna Carter is Jay Z’s second appearance at CONSOL Energy Center. He and Kanye West appeared here in 2011 on the Watch the Throne Tour. He also played the Mellon (Civic) Arena in 1999 with DMX and in 2010 with Trey Songz and Young Jeezy.

“Magna Carta…Holy Grail” and the Magna Carter World Tour came 10 years after the entertainer’s “retirement.”

WWE, STEEL CITY SHARE ANOTHER HISTORIC EVENT By: Pam Thompson Pittsburgh and the WWE write another page of their shared history and the sport of wrestling in 2014 when the Steel City hosts the WWE Royal Rumble Pay Per View for the first time ever. Adam Hopkins, the WWE director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications, talked about that story, the fans, the international appeal of the WWE and the significance of the city hosting the Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble Pay Per View Per View contest at CONSOL Energy Center this January marks the eighth WWE event held here since the arena opened in August 2010. Describing the event, Hopkins says, “The Royal Rumble is one of WWE’s most anticipated events each year. The highlight will indeed be the Royal Rumble match itself. WWE Superstars will enter the ring in 90-second intervals and can only be eliminated by being thrown over the top rope. The importance of this match is truly epic; as the winner of the Royal Rumble gets a guaranteed title shot at WrestleMania 30.” The popularity of WWE performances at the city’s three-year-old arena builds on 49 years of wrestling events held at the Civic (Mellon) Arena which was the venue for more than 370 contests. Wrestling was first broadcast in Pittsburgh on Sept. 1, 1957. WIIC Channel 11’s “Studio Wrestling” packed the house regardless of where the wrestling match was held. The WWE made its debut at the CONSOL Energy Center with a sold out live telecast of Monday Night RAW which took place on March 21, 2011. Talking about why Pittsburgh was chosen as the site for the 2014 WWE Royal Rumble Pay Per View, Hopkins says, “Pittsburgh has a rich history with WWE dating back many years, including the 1995 SummerSlam and the 1998 King of The Ring pay-per-views, as well as many Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown television tapings. It was only fitting that they host one of WWE’s biggest events of 2014.” Hopkins says, “Royal Rumble is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for WWE, and kicks off WWE’s road to WrestleMania 30, which takes place Sunday, April 6 from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.” The enthusiasm that local fans demonstrate for the WWE fires up its Superstars and Divas who perform here. Hopkins says, “Pittsburgh has always had one of the most passionate WWE fan bases in the country, and the city has hosted some of the most iconic moments in WWE history, such as the 1998 King of the Ring pay-per-view which saw the legendary match between The Undertaker and Mankind. WWE Superstars feed off the passion from the fans, and Pittsburgh has some of the greatest WWE fans.” Discussing what it is that makes WWE action so fascinating, so mesmerizing, so enthralling for such a wide spectrum of fans, Hopkins says, “WWE is family entertainment, with great stories, larger than life characters and amazing athletes and performers that fans of all ages can relate to and enjoy. There is something for everyone at a WWE event; drama, comedy and most importantly, heart-stopping action. WWE prides itself on being the best value in entertainment, and we are looking forward to taking all of our fans in Pittsburgh on an incredible ride at Royal Rumble on January 26.” The card for the Royal Rumble was closely guarded information. It was anticipated that Superstars battling to reach “the pinnacle of sports entertainment” would include: o John Cena o CM Punk Pittsburgh has o Randy Orton always had one of o Daniel Bryan o The Shield the most passionate o The Big Show WWE fan bases in o Alberto Del Rio the country. o Dolph Ziggler o Ryback, and o The Miz. Likewise, Hopkins says that Divas, the WWE’s female performers, are part of the Royal Rumble Pay Per View. Hopkins adds, “Many of the WWE Divas can also be seen on ‘Total Divas,’ which airs Sunday nights on the E! Network at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. The WWE has developed a broad international reach and appeal. Hopkins says, “WWE is broadcast in more than 650 million homes worldwide in more than150 countries and 30 languages. Our unique form of entertainment truly transcends cultural boundaries as stories of good versus evil translate in all languages. Fans worldwide follow the ongoing story lines and drama of WWE. WWE is also home to some of the greatest athletes from around the world and fans love to cheer for their favorite Superstars.” Projecting the anticipated attendance and viewership for the 2014 Royal Rumble Pay Per View several weeks before the event, Hopkins expected that a capacity crowd of more than 15,000 fans would be a part of the Royal Rumble live, and millions more would watch around the world on pay-per-view. In regard to Pittsburgh’s WWE history, Hopkins says, “…any visit to Pittsburgh would not be complete without mentioning WWE Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh native Bruno Sammartino. Sammartino reigned as a two-time WWE Champion for a combined 11 years, and he is proud to still live in Pittsburgh.” Sammartino, an immigrant teen, attended Schenley High School. He began working out to defend himself from bullies, began wrestling in 1959, and first appeared at the Civic Arena in 1962. Known as wrestling’s “Living Legend,” Sammartino is the longest reigning WWE Champion, and in 2013 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Known for his signature moves, the “Bear Hug” and “Backbreaker,” his many honors include the Dapper Dan Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011. | 38 |

SHOWS FOR FAMILIES, PERFORMERS BRING STUFF OF DREAMS TO CITY By: Pam Thompson

Great family shows sing, roll and skate through CONSOL Energy Center this year, bringing the stuff of dreams to enchant and thrill audiences of all ages. o January kicks off with Sesame Street Live “Can’t Stop Singing.” o February brings the excitement of Monster Jam® and its giant trucks. o March features “Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic.” Performers from two of the shows talk about their dream careers and the thrill of being a part of their respective – and — live shows. Sean Duhon drives Monster Jam’s Zombie(SM) Monster Jam truck. Stephanie Clark skates in “Disney On Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic.” After talking to them, it’s hard to tell who has a better time at their shows, the audiences or the performers themselves. Duhon, a Louisiana native, and Zombie are making their second appearance at CONSOL Energy Center, and he says, “I can’t wait to come back to Pittsburgh. People treated me like family. It was like being in New Orleans. Everyone was very hospitable.” When invited to become Zombie’s driver, Duhon says that he jumped at the opportunity and immediately had all sorts of ideas for having fun with it. Clark’s hometown is McDonald, Pa., and she began skating with the Disney show last year, shortly after graduating from Slippery Rock University. This year will be the first time that she gets to perform professionally for family and friends in the Pittsburgh area after auditioning for Disney On Ice when the show was in Pittsburgh last year. “Skating has always been there for me throughout my life and I do not know what I would do without it. I love the feeling that you get after a good performance where you are just on cloud 9 I can’t wait to come from it,” Clark says.

Fan Love

Both performers love their fans. “It’s amazing to see kids dressed up in costumes and how excited they are,” Clark says.

An ensemble skater, she performs in Mickey Mouse’s band, the Green Army in “Toy Story,” and she is the “Mexico doll” in the “Small World” number. When Duhon drove Zombie in its 2013 Pittsburgh debut, he says he hadn’t been aware that Pittsburgh had such a rich Zombie culture. (Think: George A. Romero’s zombie films, the 1968 cult classic, “Night of the Living Dead,” and “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978, and the “Mecca of Zombie Lore,” Monroeville Mall.) Duhon wears his own zombie makeup and eerie yellow contacts to complete his look for Pit Parties, and he is amazed to see fans of all ages who come to shows and Pit Parties as zombies. He says that some even mimic his look. “It’s so much fun to meet the fans,” says Duhon, noting that he has met a 90-year-old woman and babies in strollers — all wearing zombie make-up.

Advice to Aspiring Performers

“Take it slow and learn. Start young and keep your dream alive.”

Clark and Duhon have very similar advice for those who dream about driving Monster trucks, skating or other careers. Clark says, “I would tell them that if it is something that they really want to pursue, then do it. Do not let anyone or anything stand in your way.” She says, “You have to be strong and be willing to push through anything and want to prove to yourself that no matter what others may say, you are still going to live out your dream in the best way you know possible.” Clark says that she started skating as a five-year-old and was inspired by seeing Kristi Yamaguchi on television. “From there it was pretty much a done deal that I wanted to do what she was doing.” While growing up, Clark skated competitively in the continental United States. Perhaps, she could have become a Monster truck driver. When she is not on the ice, she says, “I drive my daddy’s 2003 Dodge Ram Hemi truck and am in my glory when I get to.” The graceful skater also knows how to check the oil, change and rotate tires and jump start a vehicle. Driving a Monster Jam truck was Duhon’s dream as a youngster. “I always told my parents that I was going to race Monster trucks,” he says. His advice to anyone interested in taking the same career path: “Take it slow and learn. Start young and keep your dream alive.” “Stay in school. Go to automotive school, study mechanics,” he advises. A lot happens to Monster trucks, he says adding, “The more you know about mechanics the better.” “Start racing as young as you can and when your parents will allow you…. Get as much racing experience as you can with anything — bicycles, dirt bikes — anything you can,” Duhon says, adding, “Learn the aspects of racing – and the safety of racing.” “I started on dirt bikes.” he says, explaining that he saved money to do it and sometimes had winnings to use to cover his expenses. “It’s a rough road but if I can make it, anyone can,” Duhon says.

Safety and Training

Anyone who has ever hit that unexpected pothole in the road might wonder how Monster Jam drivers endure their careening, flying and sometimes rolling performances. “We take up to eight Gs when we land,” Duhon says, adding “I’ve been in a couple of minor car accidents and they were worse.” Safety – for fans and drivers – is taken very seriously, according to Duhon. He explains that Zombie’s driver’s seat is custom-fitted to his body. He wears protective gear including a 7-point racing harness and a Hans device connecting his helmet to his seat belt to avoid whiplash and concussions. Duhon says that to further ensure everyone’s safety, Monster trucks have remote ignition interrupters. “They can kill our trucks remotely from up to a mile away,” he says. Clark says keeping her skating sharp and staying fit are important. “On our off days, I run or work out,” she says, adding, “It’s key to keep your body going.” Also, open ice time is available to Disney On Ice skaters. She notes, “It’s optional and recommended.” “I love getting out on the ice and just being free and skating for me. It is my release and something that I can rely on no matter what,” says Clark. | 48 |

ARENA’S NEW AEG GM JOINS CITY’S FAN CLUB By: Pam Thompson

The charms of Pittsburgh have attracted another member to its fan club with the arrival of Tim Hassett, the new general manager of CONSOL Energy Center and regional vice president of AEG Facilities. “So far, the city of Pittsburgh has been terrific. People are wonderful and warm, the economy is doing well and it’s a great place to live,” says Hassett. “I’m happy to be here and to be a part of the fertile environment for the arena and opportunities that come with it. I look forward to the growth of the city and enhancing life for those who live here,” he adds. “Everything about this opportunity, for all the right reasons, just felt right. You go with your instincts in those situations,” Hassett says of his move to southwestern Pennsylvania. Declaring himself a hockey fan, Hassett says, “I’m a fan of all sports and, in this case, it’s the Penguins that are our primary player, so we’ll try to do everything we can to help them win a Stanley Cup.” Hassett’s responsibilities include management of all of the arena’s business operations, creation of new events and the development of new revenue opportunities for CONSOL Energy Center. “Pittsburgh offered a new building, great fans and an up-and-coming city,” says Hassett. On making the decision to move here, Hassett says the three major factors were “the great building, great team and solid management team.” “We are open for business and looking for opportunities to broaden our horizon,” Hassett says of his plans as general manager. For his part, Hassett says he is looking to bring “the best experiences and the best environment to those attending events” at Pittsburgh’s award-winning arena. “I always get excited about trying to deliver the best customer service in this environment,” Hassett says. “Primarily, it’s about satisfying the customers. With the prices that people pay these days to go to an arena and to spend their discretionary dollars, you

Focus of his plan is “Bring in as many events and diverse events to the building as we can”

have to deliver a good solid product in a good quality environment. I like to work with the employees and get them ramped up to deliver that service. That’s the aspect of the business I really enjoy,” says Hassett. The new general manager says a focus of his plan is “Bring in as many events and diverse events to the building as we can to build the base and event calendar to provide something for everybody.” He cites the USA Gymnastics 2014 championships and NCAA events that have been hosted at CONSOL Energy Center as examples of the types of banner sporting events that he wants to host. Hassett also will continue to cultivate the center’s employees “to give them the tools and training” they need to continue to provide excellent customer service. “The Penguins management team is terrific,” Hassett says. “They want to do the right thing for the right reason.”

I’m happy to be here… I look forward to the growth of the city and enhancing life for those who live here. His transition to Pittsburgh and his new role has been everything that management described during the interview process, Hassett says. He expected a smooth transition and says, “It was easier and better than I had anticipated.” “There is a little more traffic than expected,” says Hassett, quickly adding, “It is still nothing like New York’s.” With 25 years in facilities management, Hassett says that relocating was a new experience. He lived and grew up around New York City and worked in world renowned facilities including Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Giants Stadium and Continental Airlines Arena. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Hassett holds a Masters Degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

65TH SHRINE CIRCUS TO COME IN APRIL By: Pam Thompson

The Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh is all about tradition, family, and helping young hospital patients, and it’s also all about providing affordable family entertainment, says Shriner Paul Leavy, circus chairman and promoter. This year represents the 65th edition of the Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh. Performances at CONSOL Energy Center will be April 4-6. A fan of tradition, Leavy loves the three-ring circus format, and this year’s circus will be full of tradition, plus it will have some fresh new acts, says Leavy. “Yes, it is a three-ring circus. I prefer this. I’m a traditionalist. It looks better. It plays better,” Leavy says. “It’s not all happening at once. Your eyes are always drawn to what’s going on,” he explains. “Many more acts can be presented in a quicker time. It keeps the show moving.” His goal is to be the least expensive For everyone family show, and he handpicks the acts attending, Leavy for each circus taking into consideration promises, “You have a set of criteria: o what will play well in Pittsburgh. a nice feeling when o balance between traditional you leave.” favorites and new performers, o filling the available performance space. In addition to choosing and booking entertainers, Leavy prepares the program book, arranges provisions of hay, sawdust and other supplies, as well as insurance, the venue, and behind the scenes security. He also will do the opening announcement for the circus. It is a totally volunteer position, according to Leavy, who adds, “I do have a day job.” Leavy says that he is assisted with the circus by a very small, select crew. “All of us volunteer. No one gets paid,” he says. “Pittsburgh is a great circus town,” he adds, noting “Attendance is good. 2011 crushed attendance records.” Almost 30,000 attended that year. Members of the audience can experience the circus up close by coming onto the floor before the show starts and at intermission for elephant rides, pony rides and pictures with performers. Continued on page 56

“The venue is so new. It’s a big difference between a circus in a tent for 1,500 and more than 19,000 in an arena,” says Leavy explaining, “You want to fill the floor.” He has lots of action planned to do just that. Marvel Entertainment’s Spider Man will perform, as well as the Human Flaming Arrow who is shot out of a cannon. There will be a comedy trampoline act; daredevils will ride motorcycles, and there also will be a six-man troupe on BMX bikes. “You want traditional acts, and little boys like motorcycles,” says Leavy. Speaking of tradition, there will be clowns including long-time favorite, “Grandma the Clown.” Grandma, also known as Barry Lubin, is an awardwinning veteran circus performer familiar to audiences internationally. “Hump day” will have a new meaning, says Leavy, who has booked a camel act for the first time. This year’s circus performers also will include elephants, tigers, bears – and – house cats. For those concerned about the treatment of animal performers, Leavy assures them saying, “The animals are so well cared for.” “We believe in animal welfare,” says Leavy and he points out that there are federal guidelines regarding care of the circus animals and inspections can be conducted at any time. “I know all of the acts personally. We will not hire or contract unless I’ve researched you,” he says. There has never been an issue with the care of circus animals for the Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh, according to Leavy. He says that tigers get meat like filets, beef tips and chicken. Elephants are bathed daily, and they get regular pedicures and special hay. For many families, the Shrine Circus is a tradition and must-see event, and in no family is that more true than for Leavy’s clan. Leavy became involved with the circus following the lead of his grandfather Al Lennon and his father Jack Leavy, who were Shriners and involved in its circuses. “My grandfather was very active in the Shrine organization. He was one of the original members of the Shrine Clowns in Pittsburgh when they formed in 1957. My grandfather helped my dad join the Shrine fraternity around 1960, and many friendships formed quickly, especially with some of the gentlemen that were on the Shrine Circus Committee. He immediately became involved in the Shrine Circus,” says Leavy. With his family’s ties to the circus, Leavy says, “That’s part of the reason that I have never missed a Shrine Circus in Pittsburgh since I was born.” As a youngster, he started working for the circus washing its vehicles for the circus parade. At 21, he began performing as a clown, following in the footsteps Continued to page 59

of his grandfather. He says that he still washes his own vehicle for the circus. Jack Leavy has volunteered in several capacities with the circus since the early 1970s. He served as assistant circus chairman from 1975 through the late ‘80s, and his son says, “He served as Chairman in 1991 and 1992, and I took over in 1993.” Leavy laughs recalling part of the transition discussion, “It went something like, ‘If you can do better….” “My father is now 88. He is the ticket chairman, and a past chairman of the circus.” Leavy has two teenage sons who are interested in behind-the-scenes aspects of the circus, and Paul says, “I can’t wait for my sons to join the Shrine organization.” Paul’s sons, Matt, 17, and Jason, 15, are learning the ropes, according to their dad, who says, “I like bouncing ideas of off of them, as it’s interesting to hear viewpoints from different age groups. They even help pick some of the music for the show — or at least try and keep my music selections current!” Discussing the modern day circus, Leavy says that many aspects of circus tradition live on particularly in terms of the acts and the traveling. He points out that the big circus band is gone, replaced by recorded music, and LED lights have replaced the hot lights used in the past. “Thanks to the computer digital age, I’m not mailing and driving to look at acts. I can see them on YouTube and in emailed video clips,” which he says is a timesaver and much more efficient. This year’s Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh will be the first at CONSOL Energy Center in three years. Leavy says that there were scheduling conflicts with other major events. “We are happy to be back this year,” Leavy says. For everyone attending, Leavy promises, “You have a nice feeling when you leave.” Proceeds from the circus benefit the Shriners of Pittsburgh, and in turn, the Shrine organization supports 22 children’s hospitals throughout North America, providing free care to youths up to age 18. The closest Shrine Hospital to Pittsburgh is in Erie, Pa. It provides ambulatory pediatric medical services, including ambulatory surgery, outpatient rehabilitation (physical and occupational therapy) and outpatient medical care though its Outpatient Clinic. Shriners’ physicians also provide inpatient surgery at partner hospitals. The Shrine organization in Pittsburgh is number one in the nation for membership which numbers approximately 7,500. Tickets for the Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh go on sale March 10. | 59 |

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia (Comaneci) or Gabby (Douglas).” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working eight to 10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element Continued to page 67

of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.”

“It is the biggest competition of the year” Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Martha, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age 6, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four years to work my butt off to be ready.” Continued to page 68

“In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the AllAround in 20 years.

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.” | 71 |

NEWSBOYS, LECRAE HEADLINE NEWSONG’S WINTER JAM TOUR By: Pam Thompson

It’s just a blast…10 acts for $10 can’t be beat.

NewSong’s Winter Jam Tour Spectacular is coming to Pittsburgh and Newsboys and Lecrae are headlining the show. Duncan Phillips, drummer for Newsboys, says that they are headlining Winter Jam for the fifth time and nothing is being taken for granted. Billed as “Christian Music’s Largest Annual Tour,” Winter Jam has been the world’s number one first quarter tour based on attendance for three consecutive years. “It’s just a blast,” Phillips says of Winter Jam, adding that the tour’s 10 acts for $10 can’t be beat. He says it is quality family entertainment that adults, teens and youngsters can equally enjoy. The challenge of Winter Jam for Newsboys is to condense its part of the concert to 45 minutes. Newsboys will be trying to play as much of their new music as possible while “giving a nod to the past” and playing the group’s classics that people want to hear, according to Phillips. To pack in as much music as possible, Phillips says, “The order of the set is crucial.” Formed in 1985 in Australia, Newsboys16th studio album, “Restart” made its debut at number one on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. The group has sold more than eight million albums. Phillips believes that Newsboys have been successful due to a mix of elements. Continued to page 74

“It’s good management, a good group of guys, good songs, imaging, the quality of recording...Without the songs, people would not come,” he says. Phillips’ band mates are lead vocalist Michael Tait, who is the newest member of the group, keyboardist and bassist Jeff Frankenstein and guitarist Jody Davis. Phillips, Newsboys percussionist, joined the group in 1993. The Christian pop rock band received three We Love Christian Music Awards for Group of the Year, Song of the Year and The Hook Award for Best Pop Artist/Group. In addition to the multi-GRAMMY® nominated Newsboys and groundbreaking GRAMMY®-winning rap/hip-hop recording artist Lecrae, Winter Jam’s 10 for $10 all-star line-up will also feature: o Tenth Avenue North o Thousand Foot Krutch o Plumb o NewSong, and o Colton Dixon. There also will be a message from leading young evangelist Nick Hall, and in addition, the iDisciple App Pre-Jam Party will feature Love & The Outcome, Everfound and Derek Minor. “It’s a great bang for the buck,” Phillips says. Describing Newsboys performance, Phillips calls it “Newsboys on steroids.” There will be “flying around the arena.” “We’re bringing out as much production as we can,” he says, promising “lots of video and moving lights.” “Every year Winter Jam is proud to bring fans around the country 10 artists for $10 with one mission in mind, to share the Gospel with as many people as possible,” says Eddie Carswell, Winter Jam creator and NewSong founding member. “It’s an honor to have Winter Jam fan favorites Newsboys back on tour, and we are thrilled to bring Lecrae’s powerful music and message to the stage this year as well. The 2014 tour is shaping up to be our biggest and most innovative Winter Jam yet, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” says Carswell. New this year, an official Winter Jam App is available for both Android and iOS devices. The app features interactive venue maps, free Winter Jam radio, an interactive mobile light show, social media connections, giveaways, Jam Nation membership purchases, and a Winter Jam store, among other features. The free app can be downloaded at jamtour.com/app. The Winter Jam Tour performs at CONSOL Energy Center on March 21, at 7 p.m. | 74 |
