End of the Road World Tour Brings KISS to Pittsburgh For One Last Performance By: Pam Thompson

KISS – one of the best-selling bands and most exciting acts of all time – comes to Pittsburgh this spring on its End of the Road World Tour and the legendary band is emphatic about three things. o This will be the last KISS tour ever. o The band’s performance will be devoted to the KISS Army and fans across generations, as well as those who will be seeing the band for the first time. o The band plans to finish its touring career at the top of its game upping its already prodigious reputation for its live performances. In a statement, KISS comments: “All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who’ve filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years. This will be the ultimate celebration “When we come for those who’ve seen us and a last chance for those who haven’t. KISS Army, we’re saying to your town, it’s goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show over…The night yet and we’ll go out the same way we came in... that we play any unapologetic and unstoppable.”

city, that’s the goodbye, that’s the farewell.”

Paul Stanley, a founding member of the band says, “When we come to your town, it’s over…The night that we play any city, that’s the goodbye, that’s the farewell.” The Pittsburgh goodbye concert, scheduled for March 30, brings Stanley, 67, Gene Simmons, 69, Eric Singer, 60, and Tommy Thayer, 58, to PPG Paints Arena for a show that the band describes with superlatives. Their on-stage alter egos are Stanley the Starchild on rhythm guitar, Simmons the Demon on bass, Singer the Catman on drums and Thayer the Spaceman on lead guitar.

KISS has played to audiences around the world, and Stanley says that it will take two to three years to get to all of them. The first year of the tour is booked through early December and includes Canada and the United States, 14 European nations, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

One for the Fans “We want to visit them one more time and spend that evening with those people,” Stanley says. He promises that the End of the Road World Tour will be a victory lap and a chance for KISS to go around the world to say thank you to its audiences. Simmons and Stanley say that they get choked up when they look at audiences and see three generations of fans, all in KISS makeup enjoying a show. Singer says “We’re going to try to do our best to represent all the generations and all the eras of KISS.” Continued on page 6

A Tour of Superlatives “We can still do the greatest show ever. While we can be, we want to go out there,” Stanley says. Simmons says, “Let’s do the biggest party of all time. Let’s put on the show everybody’s kept talking about.” He adds, “We are going to do something that’s going to shake the heavens.” Stanley says that it will be the most dazzling, most blinding, and most deafening KISS concert ever, marrying tech and emotional components. Declaring that KISS is “at the top of its game,” Stanley says that KISS will do at least 20 songs for each show.

Five Decades KISS first performed at a club in Queens, N.Y., in January 1973. The band members began appearing in their iconic makeup soon afterward in March of that year. Since then, KISS has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, including some 25 million RIAAcertified albums. The original members, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, are Stanley, Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. A total of 10 musicians have been in the KISS lineup over the 46-year history of the group. The band went through a period from 1983 to 1996, performing without makeup and costumes until the band’s original lineup reunited and returned to the artists’ audacious on-stage personas. Known for visual and audio effects that stagger the senses, KISS has delivered decades of live performances establishing the band as possibly the most iconic live show in rock and roll. The first studio album made by the current KISS lineup is 2009’s Sonic Boom. Singer, who also has played for Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath, has logged three stints as the drummer of KISS – 1991 to 1996, 2001 to 2002, and 2004 to the present, with credits on seven albums, beginning with 1992’s Revenge. Thayer, the newest member of KISS and lead guitarist for 17 years, was associated with Stanley, Simmons and the band for more than a decade before becoming the Spaceman, replacing Frehley. In 1989, Thayer played session guitar on song demos for Hot in the Shade. That album includes two songs co-written by Simmons and Thayer – “Betrayed” and “The Street Giveth & the Street Taketh Away.” Continued on page 9

Alabama to Perform at Arena on its 50th Anniversary Tour By: Pam Thompson

Alabama, the most successful and most awarded band in country music history, brings its 50th Anniversary Tour to PPG Paints Arena in March. The band’s story is a classic American rags-to-riches tale. It was five decades ago that cousins, Randy Owen, Jeff Cook and Teddy Gentry, left the cotton farms of their hometown, Fort Payne, Ala., to spend the summer playing music in a Myrtle Beach, S.C. bar called The Bowery. From humble beginnings picking cotton in the fields and more than a decade developing music and working day jobs to pay the bills, Owen, Cook and Gentry formed a band that made them international stars, sold 80 million albums, and changed the face and sound of country music. Alabama’s unprecedented 43 No. 1 singles span 21 gold, platinum and multi-platinum certified albums. The band introduced rock-style elements – guitars, lights, pyrotechnics and sounds – to the country audience and inspired country stars who followed. Its songs have become a soundtrack for American life and the foundation for Alabama’s stellar career. Continued on page 20

Winter brings magic to PPG Paints Arena when Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Search Party and a host of beloved characters come to town in a new innovative production, The ice show will be in town for eight shows over a four-day run. The search party flows through scenes from Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Moana, Coco, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Frozen with characters from these tales, as well as other well-known Disney figures including Goofy, Donald Duck, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and others. Introduced last summer, the show’s creators say that Mickey’s Search Party brings the magic closer than ever before to fans. It uses state-of-the-art technology and visually immersive performance elements on the ice, in the air and in the seats. Feld Entertainment, Inc., the worldwide leader in live touring family entertainment, produces Disney On Ice. The company says that the new show once again elevates the ice show experience with new engaging elements to fascinate both newcomers and returning guests. Mooney says of Mickey’s Search Party, “Every year we try to do something new here at Feld and I think this year is a really interesting year because we are trying something very, very different.” Vincent says, “The projection is something very new.” She says that the technology enhances the overall look of the show to create an amazing experience for audiences. Porter explains further, “Projection mapping is the process of mapping multiple projectors together which allows us to treat the whole space as a single canvas.” Stuart notes, “…we’re using a lot more technology, a lot of different devices to artistically create a more visually immersive experience.” Blake adds, “You’re not just watching the magic, but you’re taking part and you’re just as vital to the story as the skaters or the acrobats are.” While it may seem second nature to present the chilling scenes of Frozen on the ice, the show deftly portrays sets in warm climes, as well as others, on and under the ocean. Mickey Mouse and friends embark on an epic adventure in Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Search Party. Its dynamic and immersive action takes place on the ice, in the air and in the seats. Live hosts welcome everyone into the magical world of Disney On Ice, setting the stage for a participatory adventure that puts the audience into the action. In a high-energy opening number, Club Mickey Mouse-inspired performers hype up the crowd through cutting-edge figure skating choreography and hoverboard tricks on the ice. Air tracks also allow the hilarious pirates aboard the Jolly Roger to flip, tumble and twist to greater heights as they attempt to showcase their talents for Captain Hook. With the cast of Disney characters, the audience joins in the search for clues to find Tinker Bell after Captain Hook tries to capture her magic. As Miguel from Disney•Pixar’s Coco crosses the marigold bridge, he finds himself in the magnificent and mystical Land of the Dead. over the audience in a dazzling display perfectly suited to this exciting and beautiful celebration of family. Through video projection, Arendelle builds from the ground up, and ice harvesters from Disney’s Frozen use extreme skating to launch themselves from the mountainous, wintry slopes delivering an athletically driven performance as they chop their way through blocks of ice. Elsa, Anna and Olaf join in the action. The iconic chandelier seen in “Be Our Guest” comes to life as Belle and the enchanted objects from Beauty and the Beast become a rotating carousel that lifts upward into the air using aerial silks to mesmerize onlookers seated above and below. Lumiere and Cogsworth take to the ice with Belle and the chorus of skating dinner service. Aerial straps combined with adagio pair skating elevates Ariel’s transformation from mermaid to human, creating a spell-binding sequence high above the ice with Prince Eric to the classic song, “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid. An “Under the Sea” production number led by Sebastian presents a host of colorfully and imaginatively costumed sea denizens. The show’s technology creates an excellent result. The sea life sings, dances and skates while a mini-submarine cruises the stage. Creative lighting on the ice and the set gives viewers the sensation of being part of the under-the-surface vignette. The show’s technology also gives the illusion of the ice being enveloped in flames as Moana encounters Te Ka on her daring voyage to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Mickey’s Search Party performances are scheduled for Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., March 1 at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., March 2 at 11 a.m., 3 and 7 p.m., and March 3 at noon and 4 p.m. Mickey’s Search Party tours the U.S. into May. Bublé Returns to Pittsburgh Five Years After Last Tour By: Pam Thompson

Singer Michael Bublé comes to PPG Paints Arena to perform this winter more than five years since his last show in Pittsburgh. The crooner’s new series of concerts, his sixth tour, marks his return to the road following a pivotal life experience in 2016, when his then three-year-old son faced a cancer diagnosis. It has been nearly four years since he wrapped his previous tour. “What the experience did was give me a real perspective. It completely changed my outlook on what mattered and what was important to me,” says Bublé. He opens his tour in Tampa, Fla., nine days before his Feb. 22 Pittsburgh concert. It was September 2013 when Bublé last performed at PPG Paints Arena on his To Be Loved Tour. Bublé’s tour dates are scheduled into November and will take him throughout North America and Europe, including stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, London’s O2 Arena and Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Bublé returned to the stage last August after a lengthy absence for shows in Dublin, London and Sydney where he performed for more than 150,000 fans. The Sydney Morning Herald reported, “This is a man who holds the audience in the palm of his hand. His soaring vocals absolutely knock it out of the park.” Continued on page 42

| 41 |

Continued from page 41

Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported, “Bublé got down to the business of wrapping his golden tonsils around some of the most iconic songs of pop history.” In November, Bublé announced this year’s tour and days later released his new studio album, Love, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Love, Bublé’s tenth studio album combines original songs and his renditions of classics. Its tracks include: o “When I Fall in Love” o “I Only Have Eyes for You” o “Love You Anymore” o “La Vie En Rose” o “My Funny Valentine” o “Such a Night” o “Forever Now” o “Help Me Make It Through the Night” o “Unforgettable” o “When You’re Smiling,” o “Where or When.” “Forever Now,” co-written by Bublé for Love, is about his favorite role, being a dad, and the vulnerability and strength that comes with unconditional love. He says that his vision for Love entailed looking at all facets of love. “The good, the bad, the light, the dark, and I think that took a lot of pressure off of David Foster and Jochem van des Saag and me. There was just great ease of having done our homework and knowing what the record was.” Foster and van der Saag co-produced the album with Bublé. The artist adds, “…these songs, this genre is the essence of me. It’s where I live, it’s where I’ve grown up…It fits me perfectly. It’s so natural.” For people listening to his new music, Bublé says that some will be hurting and going through tough times. “And if one of these songs lifts them out of that, if it can carry them to another day, I think then I’m doing my job and I think I’m being responsible for the gifts I’ve been given,” Bublé says. Bublé, who has sold more than 60 million records, owns four Grammy Awards – all for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album – for 2008’s Call Me Irresponsible, 2010’s Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden, 2011’s Crazy Love, and 2014’s To Be Loved. | 42 |

Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, the two fellows together known as 2Cellos, have entertained audiences around the globe and into the far corners of the Internet. The two musicians created a name for themselves with their energetic and dynamic performance style and an eclectic collection of music. In 2011, 2Cellos’ rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” attained viral video fame on YouTube. Classically trained, Sulic and Hauser have accumulated more than one billion streams globally and 750 million YouTube video views. 2Cellos signature style takes the cello to unimagined heights and breaks down the boundaries between music genres ranging from classical and film music to pop and rock. Their repertoire includes selections from movie soundtracks including The Godfather, Titanic, Schindler’s List and Love Story. Let There Be Cello includes 2Cellos’ interpretations of Ed Sheeran’s pop hit “Perfect,” rock’s “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, John Lennon’s classic “Imagine” and “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, as well as their original compositions, “Concept2” and “Cadenza.” | 64 |
