Timberlake to Perform Pittsburgh Concerts Twice in 2018 By: Pam Thompson
Fans of Justin Timberlake, rejoice! The Man of the Woods Tour comes to PPG Paints Arena on two separate dates this year. The President of Pop’s performances in Pittsburgh are slated for June 1 and September 25. The Man of the Wood’s Pittsburgh shows represent Timberlake’s second and third appearances at PPG Paints Arena. The tour through North America and Europe in support of Timberlake’s fifth studio album, started in mid-March and finishes more than 80 shows later in January 2019. It’s been five years since The 20/20 Experience World Tour brought the artist to local fans in December 2013 as part of his global tour that spanned from 2013 into 2015. This year is evolving into a new era of entertainment and music for Timberlake. He kicked off 2018, previewing what was to come in Man of the Woods with the release of three singles in January: “Filthy,” “Supplies” and “Say Something.” All three made the Billboard Hot 100, and all three have music videos. A whimsical music video also was released for the title track. In it, Timberlake, bedecked in red flannel, jeans and hiking boots, blithely cavorts through rustic settings, taking his reallife wife, Jessica Biel for a canoe ride, a spin around the dance floor, and a sashay into the woods. The couple married in 2012 and their son, Silas was born in April 2015. Man of the Woods is named for Silas, whose Man of the name means “of the forest,” and he contributes Woods is to vocals on the song that his dad wrote for him, named for “Young Man.” Timberlakes’ Biel voices the album’s “Hers (Interlude)” and provides vocals on four other tracks. son Silas, “Filthy,” the first single, peaked at No. 9 and whose name in a month’s time received gold certification in means “of Canada. It charted internationally on 22 charts the forest.” and across genres in the U.S. on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, Dance Club, Mainstream Top 40 and Rhythmic rankings. In the “Filthy” video, set 10 years into the future, Timberlake portrays an inventor/professor-type introducing his creation at a conference. The robot, possibly the inventor’s alter ego, soon shows a capacity for performing more remarkable moves than simply walking and pouring water. The second single, “Supplies” went to No. 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 23 on the Billboard Rhythmic chart. It also charted in seven other international rankings. While the “Supplies” video also has a tech influence, its mood does a 180 from the feel of the “Filthy” video. The set is peppered with elements of today’s world. Pharrell Williams, a collaborator on the song, makes a cameo appearance in the production, and Timberlake does break out some flannel and denim from the Man of the Woods wardrobe. “Say Something,” the third single, features Chris Stapleton who co-wrote the track as well as two others on Man of the Woods with Timberlake: “Morning Light” featuring Alicia Keys, and “The Hard Stuff.” Continued on page 29

Stapleton also joins Timberlake in the “Say Something” video. They strum guitars and wander through the dimly lit interior of Los Angeles’ 125-year-old Bradbury Building. Along the way, they pass musicians, as they descend via stairs and elevators. By the time they reach the ground floor, they are supported by choir members lining the building’s interior balustrades. The outdoorsy sounding Man of the Woods released on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2. Timberlake definitely did not see his shadow and just two days later, he performed his solo Super Bowl LII Halftime Show. The performer’s extravaganza began with “Filthy.” It was the only song in the halftime show from his new album. Timberlake sang and danced his way through Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium, performing 10 songs from his repertoire including his globally successful platinum hits, “SexyBack,” “Suit & Tie,” and “Mirrors.” In a tribute to Prince, Timberlake covered “I Would Die 4 U,” and closed the show with his 2017 hit, “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” It was Timberlake’s third time entertaining a Super Bowl crowd and his first as the sole featured artist. He first played the football championship in 2001 when NSYNC joined Britney Spears. The second time was when he shared the Super Bowl stage with Janet Jackson in 2004. The Super Bowl LII Halftime Show was seen by a television audience of more than 106 million. The halftime entertainment drew a larger audience than did the championship football game. The next day, Timberlake and Stapleton performed “Say Something” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In its first week, Man of the Woods, Timberlake’s fifth studio album as a solo performer, went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and became the best-selling album in the first six weeks of 2018. It also is Timberlake’s fourth consecutive No. 1 album. Of his four earlier albums, only his debut work, Justified in 2002 missed the top of the chart peaking at “a mere” No. 2 on the Billboard 200. FutureSex/LoveSounds in 2006, The 20/20 Experience – 1 of 2 and The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, both released in 2013, all earned No. 1 rankings.
Man of the Woods, is Timberlake’s fourth consecutive No. 1 album.
Depending on the source, Man of the Woods is described as R&B and/ or funk with influences including country, pop, soul, electronic, futuristic and cosmopolitan. Timberlake enlisted collaborators, including among others, Stapleton, Williams and Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), and Tim Mosley (Timbaland) for cowriting and co-producing the album’s tracks. Back in 2015, Timberlake and Stapleton awed the audience when they teamed up at the Country Music Association Awards. Covering George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey” and teaming up on Timberlake’s “Drink You Away,” the pair’s performance was called “stunning.” At that time, while Timberlake was known as the Prince of Pop, Stapleton, an accomplished songwriter of hits for many famous performers, had just Continued on page 32

released his debut album six months earlier. It has been called a career-making night for Stapleton who also took home the awards for Male Vocalist, New Artist and Album of the Year for his debut collection, Traveller. Timberlake and The Neptunes collaborated on Justified in 2002, and on Man of the Woods, the writing/producing duo contributed to nine of the 16 tracks. In addition to co-writing and co-producing four Man of the Woods tracks, Mosley (Timbaland) contributed to Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, and both of the 20/20 albums. Providing a generous hour’s worth of music, the Man of the Woods tracks include: o “Filthy” o “Say Something” featuring o “Midnight Summer Jam” Stapleton o “Sauce” o “Hers (Interlude)” o “Man of the Woods” o “Flannel” o “Higher, Higher” o “Montana” o “Wave” o “Breeze Off the Pond” o “Supplies” o “Livin’ Off the Land” o “Morning Light” featuring o “The Hard Stuff,” and o “Young Man.” Alicia Keys Prior to taking to the road, Timberlake opened the Brit Awards show in February at the O2 Arena in London with two songs from Man of the Woods. Introduced as “one of the biggest artists in the world,” Timberlake took the stage exhorting the audience, “Let’s dance y’all.” He led a dance troupe through his opener “Midnight Summer Jam.” Continued on page 35

It was a stop on his eight-city tour in support of his new solo album, Arkansas which was released in early February. His memoir, Change of Seasons was released in 2017. Oates has released six solo studio albums and three live albums. Hall started the online Live from Daryl’s House, featuring a mix of well known music artists as his guests in 2007. Originally produced at Hall’s home, the series morphed media and location, from only the web to include television and from Hall’s house to his club – Daryl’s House Restaurant and Music Club in Pawling, N.Y. The episodes feature a variety of performers, such as Train, Smokey Robinson, Eric Hutchinson, Cee-Lo Green, the O’Jays, Kenny Loggins, Joe Walsh, Darius Rucker, José Feliciano, Fitz and the Tantrums, and many others. Hall has released seven solo albums. The duo headlined the BluesFest 2017 at London’s O2 Arena last October.

A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat is Train’s sixth studio album to make the Billboard 200 Top 10, following 2001’s Drops of Jupiter and 2003’s My Private Nation, both No. 6, 2006’s For Me, It’s You, No. 10, 2012’s California 37, No. 4, and 2014’s Bulletproof Picasso, No. 5. Foo Fighters kicked off the first U.S. leg of the Concrete and Gold Tour in October at the grand opening of The Anthem in Washington, D.C. The new tour has played to sold out arenas in Richmond, Va., Greensboro, S.C., Cincinnati, and other dates. “Foo Fighters keep going and going and going in epic Greensboro show,” wrote the Charlotte Observer. “If there’s one thing you can count on lately when you walk into a Foo Fighters concert, it’s that you probably won’t get home until tomorrow.” Continued on page 54

Frey’s Son, Gill Round Out Band For An Evening with the Eagles By: Pam Thompson
An Evening with the Eagles comes to PPG Paints Arena on July 24 for one show. It was five years ago that the History of the Eagles Tour, celebrating the band’s eponymous documentary, played here with Glenn Frey, co-founder of the legendary band on stage. It was his last tour. He passed away in 2016. In this year’s tour, Eagles co-founder Don Henley and long-time members Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit are joined by Vince Gill and Glenn Frey’s son, Deacon. Songs that the late Frey typically sang are divvied up between his son and his friend, Gill, both on vocals and rhythm guitar. Henley is on vocals, drums, percussion and rhythm guitar, Walsh on lead and rhythm guitar, keyboards and vocals, and Schmit on bass and vocals. Continued on page 60

The Eagles brought on Gill and Deacon Frey in 2017, moves that Henley believes his late collaborator would approve. Reviewers note that the young Frey, who will be 25 when the tour comes to Pittsburgh, resembles his father in appearance and sound. Gill, a long-time friend of Eagles members, has 21 Grammy Awards for his contributions to country music. The Eagles history spans close to 50 years. Henley and Frey formed The Eagles in 1971 after touring in Linda Ronstadt’s band. Walsh joined in 1975, and Schmit joined in 1980, for the album, The Long Run, just before the group unofficially dissolved. Band members pursued individual careers. In 1994, the group reunited. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Eagles induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Frey, Henley, Schmit and Walsh, as well as former members Don Felder, Bernie Leadon and, Randy Meisner, were inducted in 1998, the band’s first year of eligibility. The Eagles’ seven past and present members performed together at the induction. In 2015, the band – Frey, Henley, Schmit and Walsh – was to receive Kennedy Center Honors but postponed due to Frey’s illness and upcoming surgery. Following Frey’s death – he and his three bandmates were recognized at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors. Continued on page 63
