BEST GYMNASTS IN U.S. TO VIE IN CITY FOR NATIONAL TITLES By: Pam Thompson

For American gymnasts, their coaches, and fans of the sport, Pittsburgh will be the place to be August 21-24, when the P&G Gymnastics Championships are contested at CONSOL Energy Center. The championships, a “star studded event,” will determine the U.S. champions and national team for the junior and senior elite levels, says Steve Penny, president and CEO of USA Gymnastics, the sole governing body for the sport of gymnastics in the United States. “The road to Rio (Summer Olympics 2016) starts the minute that the 2014 Olympics end. The P&G Championships in Pittsburgh are hugely important to any athlete looking toward those games,” says Penny. It will be the first time that the U.S. Championships ever have been held in Pittsburgh. Penny estimates that some 3,000 people will converge on Pittsburgh, including about 200 men and women competing at the senior and junior levels of the sport. Continued on page 4

Coinciding with the championships will be USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show at Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center. It is USA Gymnastics’ annual gathering of its professional members. The three-day Congress and Trade Show, open to the entire gymnastics community, provides presentations, demonstrations and educational seminars and an exhibitor’s hall. “You want to be at this event. It’s where everyone is seen – all of the names and faces,” Penny says, summing up the significance of the championships and the Congress. Planning to attend are several gymnastics greats who already have visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of the championships being held in the City of Champions: o Bela Karolyi, women’s coach of six U.S. champions, as well as nine Olympic champions and 15 World champions o Carly Patterson, 2004’s U.S. Co-Champion and All-Around Olympic gold medalist o Shawn Johnson, 2008’s U.S. All-Around Champion and AllAround Olympic silver medalist, and o Nastia Liukin, 2005 and 2006 U.S. Champion and 2008’s All-Around Olympic gold medalist. Liukin will be part of NBC’s team covering the championships. She also was with NBC in Russia for this year’s Winter Olympics, doing “All Around Sochi” features. Johnson says, “It is probably one of the best competitions you could go to. It’s got the best athletes, male and female. It’s Continued on page 6

going to be a great environment…on your home turf…It’s a lot of fun.” “It’s unreal on TV and even crazier in person,” Johnson adds. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics. Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia (Comaneci) or Gabby (Douglas).” “These are the best athletes in our country,” Penny says noting that there will be competitors familiar to fans from the last Olympics as well as those looking for places on the next U.S. Olympics team. “Our women’s team has been the best in the world for 13 years or more,” says Penny. “They have won 73 World and Olympic medals since 2000. Russia is next with 41 medals.” In the last 10 years, Penny says that the U.S. women gymnasts have won 8 of 10 individual all around titles. Of the men’s team, Penny says, “They are amazing athletes – they are real men of steel.” “Our guys did not achieve what they wanted in the London Olympics. They are going to show that they are to be reckoned with,” says Penny noting that the men have taken a “step forward’ and a lot can be expected from their program in the next couple of years. Kevin Mazeika, U.S. Men’s National Team coordinator says, “The USA Men’s Team keeps getting better and better. This is due to the incredible coaches we have in our country along with very talented and committed athletes. This combination produces a very exciting future for men’s gymnastics in the U.S.” Continued on page 9

At the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp, the U.S. Team – men and women – brought home 12 medals. Penny notes that that is the most medals ever won by a U.S. team. Discussing the evolution of gymnastics, Penny says, “The sport has certainly become more of a spectacle, more difficult, more skills.” In gymnastics, women compete in four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, and men compete in six events: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Mazeika says, “The sport of gymnastics for both men and women requires a tremendous amount of strength. The apparatus differ for each discipline and in turn this requires a different emphasis on training and strength development.” He says that women’s events, except for uneven bars, are considered leg events, meaning that the majority of the exercises require lower body and leg strength. Top female gymnasts often are in their teens. “For the men’s apparatus, the opposite is true,” Mazeika says. Four of the six events are considered upper body strength events. Only floor and vault are considered leg events. “So for the men, this upper body strength develops later in their maturation process, hence the top athletes being an average age of about 21 years old,” Mazeika says. Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming.” To local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” “Watching young kids, especially the Continued on page 11

girls, connect with these athletes to me is one of the most rewarding aspects of the sport,” says Penny, who has three young daughters involved in entry level gymnastics. A significant number of national team members got their starts in gymnastics in the same way as Johnson who says as a three-year-old she “did a lot of climbing, jumping and was packed with energy.” o Jonathan Horton says, “I was a wild child. I once climbed a pole in the middle of Target all the way to the ceiling. I used to do back flips on my parents’ bed and I rode a garage door to the top when I was 3 years old.” o Akash Modi says: “My parents did not want me jumping on the furniture so they put me in gymnastics.” o Elizabeth Price, the only national team member from Pennsylvania says, “My mom wanted to tire me out.” Johnson advises those starting out to “have fun.” Her message – “I loved what I did and that’s what took me so far.” In regard to Pittsburgh’s selection as the host city for the championships and the Congress, Penny says, “We chose Pittsburgh because it can be a bigger and better event.” “Everyone came to the table and said ‘how can we make this special?’” says Penny. VisitPITTSBURGH, the Pittsburgh Penguins, AEG, CONSOL Energy Center and Highmark along with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are supporting the championships. Commenting on Pittsburgh as the venue for the championships, Johnson says, “I think it’s great. It seems like the city is really supportive of local events.” Liukin notes convenient hotels and restaurants and says, “The gymnastics community will have a great time here.” “Our number one goal is for people to have a great time at a great sports event. They will know that they saw something special. We are confident it will be a great event. People who come will not be disappointed,” Penny says.

“We chose Pittsburgh because it can be a bigger and better event.”

NEW STARS ON ICE PRESENTS U.S. OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS Michelle Horvath

By: Pam Thompson

The thrill of Olympic ice skating comes to Pittsburgh this spring when Stars on Ice partners with U.S. Figure Skating to bring America’s newest Olympic athletes to the ice at CONSOL Energy Center. The 2014 edition of Stars on Ice, features Olympic champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White who returned from the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, with the United States’ first ice dancing gold medal in history. The theme of the show is “U.S. Olympic Figure Skating,” says Byron Allen, director of Stars on Ice. For the first time ever, the U.S. Olympic figure skating team headlines the annual nationwide tour of the country’s premier figure skating production, Stars on Ice, through its partnership with U.S. Figure Skating. Founded and produced by Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton, Stars on Ice is one of the premier family entertainment events in the U.S., and the only figure skating tour in America, presenting the country’s greatest competitors from the 2014 Winter Games. Commenting on the production, Hamilton says, “This year the show is all about celebrating our U.S. Olympic Figure Skating team. I’m celebrating the 30th anniversary of the gold I won in Sarajevo, so I can truly appreciate how special the accomplishment of these young skaters is. It should make for a great show.” Allen says, “Bringing the spirit and passion of the Olympics back to home ice, the entire-bronze-medal winning U.S. Figure Skating team will highlight a truly spectacular and star-studded cast.” “In addition to gold medalists Davis and White, two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner, 2014 U.S. champion Gracie Gold, four-time and reigning U.S. champion Jeremy Abbott, 2014 U.S. silver medalist Jason Brown, and two-time Continued on page 24

reigning U.S. pair champions Marissa Castelli & Simon Shnapir comprise the bronze medal team that will join the Stars on Ice 2014 Tour,” says Allen. The Stars on Ice 2014 Tour cast also will include two-time U.S. ice dancing silver medalists Madison Chock and Evan Bates, 2011 U.S. Champion Ryan Bradley and 2010 Olympian and 2014 U.S. Bronze medalist Mirai Nagasu. Several special guests also will make appearances throughout the tour. While the cast is replete with Olympic medalists, Allen says that it is not likely that audiences will see any of these hard won medallions being sported during the show. “Those medals are “priceless” to their owners,” Allen says. Stars on Ice continues to be a pioneer in figure skating by offering fans the rare opportunity to witness some of the most creative and cherished champions performing together in both individual and ensemble routines. Allen says, “Each of the cast members will perform a number, and there will also be a couple of ensemble numbers showcasing numerous cast members.” Adding some suspense and drama to the anticipation of fans, Allen declines to provide additional information about the ensembles saying, “Those details will be unveiled during the show itself.” “The greatest ice show on earth started with such a simple notion,” Hamilton explains. Back in 1986, we wanted to create a show that was all about skating. We believed our fans would appreciate sophisticated skating, cutting-edge costumes and challenging choreography.” “After more than 25 years, I am honored by the success of our simple notion. Stars on Ice exists to entertain you. But it has also given me the incredible opportunity to do the work I love and am proud of,” Hamilton adds. In cooperation with U.S. Figure Skating, this year’s Stars on Ice tour takes place in the spring in order to showcase the nation’s best figure skaters at the top of their form and to offer the special opportunity for fans to celebrate the accomplishments of these historic skaters. Founded in 1986 by Hamilton, the Stars on Ice tour has performed more than 1,000 shows over the last three decades and featured some 100 star skaters from around the world. Continued on page 27

Hamilton, the 1984 Olympic men’s champion, appeared in the first Stars on Ice with the ice skating elite of the day, including: o Dorothy Hamill, U.S. Olympic gold medalist in women’s figure skating, 1976 o Toller Cranston, Canada’s 1976 Olympic bronze medalist in men’s figure skating , 1976, known for his free skating accomplishments and as the national champion in his country from 1971-76 o Rosalynn Sumners, U.S. Olympic silver medalist in women’s figure skating, 1984, and o Judy Blumberg and Pittsburgh native, Michael Seibert, 1981-85 U.S. ice dancing champions and three-time World bronze medalists. Olympic gold medalists are a tradition in Stars on Ice casts. Over the years, the show’s parade of performers of this caliber has included: o Ekaterina Alexandrovna and Sergei Grinko, the Soviet Union’s two-time Olympic champions in pairs figure skating o Katarina Witt, East Germany’s two-time Olympic champion in women’s figure skating o Oksana Baiul, the Ukraine women’s champion o Alexei Yagudin, Russia’s men’s champion o Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the United Kingdom’s champion ice dancing pair, and from the United States, o Kristi Yamaguchi, women’s champion o Evan Lysacek, men’s champion, and o Tara Lipinski, women’s champion. The tour has won three Emmy Awards, one ACE Cable Award (Best Sports Special), and is recognized as the finest ice production in the world. Stars on Ice is produced by IMG, the world’s premier sports, entertainment and media company. Fans can watch Davis and White on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars on Monday evenings and then see America’s “IT” couple skating live each weekend. Shaner, chairman and co-owner, says, “The team should be greatly improved from last season. Co-owner Lynn Swann and our entire staff recruited very hard for this season. In our league it starts with the quarterback and we were able to be assigned 2012 League MVP and record shattering quarterback Tommy Grady from Utah. Many players then became very interested in playing for Pittsburgh because of his talent.” “Tommy is a superstar quarterback who will lead our franchise to unprecedented success,” Shaner says. In four seasons, Grady accumulated more than 20 franchise records with the Utah Blaze, six AFL records, and multiple League honors and awards including the 2012 Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player. In 2012, Grady set AFL records for passing yards (5,870) in a season, passing yards (436) in a single game (6/2/12 at Kansas City), passing touchdowns (142), passing touchdowns (12) in a single game (7/13/12 vs. Cleveland), pass completions (507), and pass attempts (743). He also led the League with 781 total offensive plays and 329.6 total offensive yards per game. Grady led the Blaze to a 12-6 record and led the team to a 1-1 post-season record, falling to the eventual ArenaBowl Champion Arizona Rattlers, 75-69, in the AFL National Conference Championship Game. Trib Total Media, Pittsburgh Power’s largest sponsor since the team’s inception in 2010, showed confidence in AFL action in the city by purchasing a large percentage of the team early this year in a multi-million dollar deal. Shaner says, “Having Trib Total Media as a co-owner is a ‘game changer’ for the franchise in our opinion. Trib Total Media is not just a newspaper company, it is a media juggernaut in our region that is very active in the community. We are still a young franchise, having only three seasons under our belt. We feel with the tremendous following of the Trib teamed up with our sports franchise that it can only draw more fans to games.” Commenting on the deal, Ralph Martin, Trib Total Media president, says, “Trib Total Media was presented an opportunity to partner with Matt Shaner and Lynn Swann, businessmen we respect and admired. The Shaners and Lynn have operated the Power successfully the last three years. Looking at the Arena Football League as a whole, we saw a business that has been consistently, methodically and strategically growing franchise value for quite some time. Taking all these factors into consideration, and being given an opportunity to meet another of our own goals which is to only invest where we have the ability to weigh-in regarding the direction of the business this made good business sense. Trib Total Media is in the information and entertainment business after all.” Shaner adds, “The determining factor for the TRIB purchasing a large percentage of the Pittsburgh Power came down to whether or not it was a good business decision for the TRIB organization. After a number of meetings and careful consideration the TRIB’s executives along with Richard Mellon Scaife’s blessing believed it made good business sense.” The lease renewal provides the team with “arena lease stability,” according to Shaner who says, “I am thrilled to announce that the Pittsburgh Power are here to stay.” “The Pittsburgh Penguins’ unwavering support of our franchise and our collaborative partnership with AEG continue to give us the stability we need as we commit to our fans and the region that we intend to bring an ArenaBowl Championship to Pittsburgh,” says Shaner.

“We want to continue to put our fans first”

Pittsburgh Power continues to be a great entertainment value. This year, season tickets for 9 home games started at $99 for two seats. Swann says, “We want to continue to put our fans first and provide the most affordable and exciting sports and entertainment experience in the area. We looked at our pricing the first three seasons, and in conjunction with our on-the-field results, we felt that we owed it to the fans to reward them for their loyalty and to make sure that price would not be an objection whatsoever to anyone.” In conjunction with the lease extension, all 2014 season ticket prices were lowered and 70 percent of CONSOL Energy Center’s lower bowl individual tickets also were reduced. All season ticket packages include a premium gift, discounted parking and select food and beverage preferred pricing. Season tickets purchased this year will also lock in pricing through the 2016 season. Individual game tickets are $15 (end zone), $25 (sideline), $35 (club) and $50 (first three rows), reflecting a reduction of up to 67 percent based on 2013 individual game pricing. The Power tradition of fan giveaways continues this season, says Shaner. The first 5,000 fans at each home game receive a promotional item, and in addition food and beverage discounts are offered. Head Coach Derek Stingley, in his second full season as head coach of the Pittsburgh Power, says, “Our organization has been very active this off-season putting together a team that Power fans have been waiting to see play for quite some time.” Stingley added assistant coaches: Kyle Moore-Brown for the offensive line, Leroy Thompson on the defensive line, and Damian Harrell for wide receivers. The trio collectively brings more than 40 years of AFL playing and coaching experience to the Power. “Their winning pedigree, success, and first-hand knowledge of our league and players from top to bottom will be tremendous assets to our organization,” Stingley says. Moore-Brown, Stingley and Thompson, teammates in Albany for four seasons, were members of the 1999 ArenaBowl XIII Champion Firebirds. Power’s 20-week, 18-game schedule includes nine home games and two off-weeks. In East Division play, Power hosts the Cleveland Gladiators and in-state rival Philadelphia Soul twice each during this season and plays the new division member, the Iowa Barnstormers, at home on Friday, June 20. | 36 |

LADY GAGA’S ‘ARTRAVE: THE ARTPOP BALL’ MAKES PITTSBURGH THIRD STOP OF TOUR By: Pam Thompson

The inimitable Lady Gaga consumes the CONSOL Energy Center stage this spring when her “artRave: The ARTPOP Ball” comes to Pittsburgh.” The land of three rivers has the distinction of being the third stop on the new tour, which includes 29 cities in North America before it heads down under and then on to Europe and Japan. The concert is expected to wow and entertain in the style of Lady Gaga’s first three headliner tours – “The Fame Ball,” “The Monster Ball,” and “Born This Way” — which sold nearly four million tickets. Lady Gaga’s new concert tour supports her third studio album, “ARTPOP” which was released last November. The work made its debut at number one on the Billboard 200. The 15 tracks on ARTPOP provide almost an hour of music and include: o “Aura” o “Venus” o “G.U.Y.” o “Sexxx Dreams” o “Jewels N’Drugs” o “Manicure” o “Do What U Want” o “Artpop” o “Swine” o “Donatella” o “Fashion!” o “Mary Jane Holland” o “Dope” o “Gypsy,” and o “Applause.” The pop singer is the only artist to sell more than 5 million recordings with her first two hits in the digital music era. Lady Gaga’s “Monster Ball Tour” played CONSOL Energy Center twice in September 2010 and February 2011, which makes it more than three years since her last concert in Pittsburgh. Continued on page 49

It has been more than a year since Lady Gaga’s hip injury, which forced her to cancel part of her tour in 2013. Earlier this year, she made appearances to mark two entertainment milestones in her hometown, New York City. One was an opening and the other a closing. Lady Gaga performed the final seven shows at the historic Roseland Ballroom in New York City before the famous venue closed down forever, including one on March 28, her 28th birthday. Her sold-out Roseland shows in late March and early April gave her the record for the most consecutive shows by any artist at the famous ballroom, which is now permanently closed. Whether celebrating a first or a last, the Lady has a way of making special milestones explode with laser sharp images. She brought her trademark style to the opening of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” causing the studio audience to roar. On Fallon’s first night succeeding Jay Leno, Lady Gaga joined the parade of celebs marching up to the host at his desk to “pay up” on a losing bet that Fallon would never host the show. Lady Gaga was unmistakable in a wig of long straight white hair descending to a length somewhere below her knees and a sheer black lingerie-like Continued on page 50

ensemble with strategically located opaque patches and girded with a plasticlike embellishment. Accessorizing her look for this special occasion were cropped gloves, fishnet hosiery, and shades that seemed to mimic the style of the heavy duty ones that used to be handed out to cataract surgery patients. While the audience at home couldn’t see her shoes, Fallon was prompted to warn her, “Be careful. Be careful in those shoes.” Being in her characterization of the moment, Lady Gaga’s pouty-mouth countenance seemed to emanate cool composure as she gave Fallon a kiss and a whispered message intended only for him. When Lady Gaga returned as the musical guest for Fallon’s second “Tonight Show,” she appeared in the same white wig and performed a modified version of the “ARTPOP” title track, playing a glass piano on a raised stage. Some lights glittered and others provided a pink wash over the foggy set, turning the singer’s hair, white outfit, fog and the glass piano bright pink. Whether she is stepping into the street, doing an interview or performing in concert, Gaga seems to create an installation artwork with herself as the moveable centerpiece. Her music, her messages, her attire – whether a stage costume or street clothes – her props and sets all have a uniqueness that surprises, unsettles and attracts all at once. The only thing typical about her physical appearance is that it will be atypical. Far more significant than — and not as outlandish as — Gaga’s widely and wildly varied physical appearance, are her often repeated key messages. On her websites, Facebook, and through her Born This Way Foundation, she consistently encourages others to pursue their creative passions and to make a better world for everyone. On the home page of LittleMonsters.com, a site for Lady Gaga’s fans, the little monsters, visitors to the site are reminded: “Be brave…be tolerant…be original…be a contributor…be respectful… and most importantly, be yourself.” On Facebook where she is liked by more than 63.5 million individuals, she described herself and encouraged others: “Music changed my life. I don’t know who I would be without it. Don’t ignore even the smallest glimmer of passion in your soul, run towards it with everything you have. It could change your life.”

“Be brave… be tolerant…and most importantly, be yourself.”

“Being different is a talent. You illuminate what makes you special in the sea of sameness around you.” In March, Lady Gaga had the distinction of giving the keynote speech at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin Texas. It had been 15 years since a female performer delivered this address. Gaga also was the youngest speaker to ever perform this rite at the age of 27. While at SXSW, Gaga performed with John Norris of Fuse with proceeds going to her Born This Way Foundation, and made an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” from Austin. Also this year, Lady Gaga was nominated for Favorite Female Singer in the Kids’ Choice Awards. Her hundreds of awards include: 13 MTV Video Music Awards, 7 Billboard Music Awards, 5 Grammy Awards, 3 People’s Choice Awards, and an Emmy. Lady Gaga and her mom, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation in 2011 to foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. The Foundation is dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a kinder, braver world. In conjunction with Lady Gaga’s Roseland performances, a BTWF benefit was conducted. The prize consisted of tickets from anywhere in the world to one of the Roseland shows and dinner with Lady Gaga, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, and the Germanotta family at their NYC restaurant, Joanne Trattoria. In another benefit for BTWF, some of the fashions worn by Lady Gaga in this March’s cover photo and layout in “Harper’s Bazaar” were auctioned on eBay. BTWF’s initiative, the Born Brave Bus Tour, is an educational ‘tailgate’ experience that connects young people to the resources, skills and opportunities they need to make a difference in their communities, and to one another. In its first year, the Bus reached 20,000 people in 18 cities. The Foundation operates with the belief that everyone has the right to feel safe, to be empowered and to make a difference in the world.

CHELSEA HANDLER PLANS STEEL CITY PERFORMANCE By: Pam Thompson

Chelsea Handler’s “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live Tour” includes a stop at CONSOL Energy Center this spring. Known as a comedian, author and talk show host, Handler’s 2014 national stand-up comedy tour supports the release of her fifth book, “Uganda Be Kidding Me” and includes 31 dates over three months. “I’ve decided to go on tour and support my new book, ‘Uganda Be Kidding Me.’ I think we all know how much I love the sound of my own voice,” says Handler. Her newest book “Uganda Be Kidding Me” was released in March in coordination with the start of her tour of the same name. Book and tour were spawned by Handler’s 2012 trip to Africa, and other travel adventures. Handler last played CONSOL Energy Center in 2010 when she partnered with Live Nation and Belvedere Vodka for the “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” comedy tour. That tour was extended three times, drawing more than 250,000 fans in 44 markets and grossing more than $16 million. Since then, she was named one of Glamour Magazine’s 2011 “Women of the Year,” and she also was featured in TIME Magazine’s 2012 “TIME 100” Portfolio. Everyone attending her show will want to familiarize themselves with Handler’s “new rules.” In online video, she says, “I want everyone to enjoy the galactic experience of my performance, but based on my previous tours, I have some new tour rules.” The rules provide tips on concert etiquette to everyone from those who want books signed to her family members. For instance: Rule 5: “If you sleep with my brother Roy, it doesn’t mean that you get

to come back to my hotel room. That used to be the case, but not anymore.” Rule 23: “If I yell out, ‘It’s great to be in Chicago,’ but I’m actually in Atlanta, do not correct me. Technically, we are all Americans.” Rule 31: “Don’t ask me to do a Jell-O shot with you. I’m not in college any more. I’m a respectable elderly woman.” In 2011, Handler brought along her friends and regulars from “Chelsea Lately” on her “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me” comedy tour, which sold out in the top 20 U.S. markets. Adaptations of the cover photo for her new book promote the tour, and frame Handler’s web pages. The book cover channels comedic theater of the absurd and provides some inkling to what Handler’s audiences and readers can expect. Prominently featured at center of the image are Handler and her dog, Chunk Handler. Chunk wears one of his signature bandanas, a leash loosely dripping from her theatrically outstretched hand, and a quizzical stare into the face of his guardian. Handler herself is attired and coiffed elaborately. Her over-the-top black gown complete with mermaid skirt, a life-like ruffle spewing from one shoulder to the abdomen, and a metallic bodice and peplum is only outdone by the comedian’s hairdo. It seems that the style began as an elegantly smoothed back arrangement of Handler’s own tresses but then gave way to the tone of the gown, piling on loops of blond braids and an extra hairpiece every bit the size of Handler’s own head. The monochromatic setting for the Handlers is an airport baggage claim area populated by an elephant, giraffe, lioness and a trio of meerkats. Promotional material for the book states, “In this hilarious and absurd collection of travel essays Handler delivers some of her favorite stories while also giving travelers her not-to-be-believed guide to etiquette, hot spots, and answers to some of the most asked travel questions.” Making appearances to promote her book and tour, Handler visited “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Piers Morgan Live,” “Good Morning America” and others. Handler told Fallon that Vladimir Putin was her ex. According to the comedian, they dated for six or seven months. She and Fallon even showed a “little seen and much photo-shopped” picture of Handler with Putin. Very similar to the widely seen photo of bare-chested Putin riding horseback, Handler’s photo showed her riding double behind the Russian president. While bantering with Morgan, Handler told him, “I don’t have regrets. I don’t live my life like that. I mean, you know. You fall down. You pick yourself up. You move forward and just try to be a really good, smart person. I like to fill my brain up with new information. That’s it. I mean, I don’t look back and go I wish I did that, I wish I didn’t do that.” Talking about tweets gone awry on “Good Morning America, she told George Stephanopoulos, “I get in trouble all of the time. I mean, well, I’m a comedian.” Handler is perhaps best known as the outspoken host of E!’s late night talk show, “Chelsea Lately.” She began hosting in 2007 and continues to offer international audiences her fearless honesty and tongue-in-cheek commentary every weeknight. Handler had three A leading nonfiction author, Handler had three books books simultaneously simultaneously ranked at ranked at number number one, number 2 and 1, 2 and 3 on the number 3 on the Bestseller Lists in March 2010. Pittsburgh will be treated to a concert pairing two of the most influential hit makers and dynamic live performers this spring as part of the tour, “Rod Stewart and Santana: The Voice, The Guitar, The Songs.” CONSOL Energy Center will host this blending of energies as part of the first leg of the two-part tour which runs through August. Rod Stewart and Carlos Santana, seemingly inhabitants of separate musical universes, are joining forces to play an 18-concert North American tour. The show will be Santana’s first appearance at CONSOL Energy Center, and the second for Stewart who came through in July 2012 with Stevie Nicks. The tour unites the two musical trailblazers who have helped redefine the sound of popular music for the last five decades through their combined love of rock, soul, world rhythms, funk, jazz and blues. Both Stewart and Santana are known for their high-energy, hitpacked live concerts — making the combination an incomparable experience for all music fans. With his singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Stewart has built one of the most successful and enduring music careers of all time. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has amassed sales of more than 150 million albums worldwide and has countless charttopping hits and industry accolades, including two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For 40 years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 100 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. Continued on page 62

Also a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Santana has been cited by “Rolling Stone” as number 15 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” “Live 1976-1998: Tonight’s The Night,” Stewart’s new four-disc collection spanning more than 20 years of work was released earlier this spring. It includes 58 previously unreleased live recordings. In May 2013, Stewart released “Time,” his first rock album in a dozen years, on Capitol Records. Featuring 11 original tracks, the album marks Stewart’s return to songwriting after nearly two decades.

The tour unites the two musical trailblazers with their combined love of rock, soul, world rhythms, funk, jazz and blues. “Time” entered the UK Albums Chart at number one, setting a new British record for the longest gap between chart-topping albums by an artist – and in the U.S., it marks Stewart’s highest-charting album of original material since 1979. Santana’s new album “CORAZÓN” (RCA/Sony Latin Iberia) due out this spring, is a collaborative effort with the biggest names in Latin music. CORAZÓN features collaborations with ChocQuibTown, Lila Downs, Gloria Estefan, Fabulosos Cadillacs Juanes, Ziggy Marley, Miguel, Niña Pastori, Diego Torres, Samuel Rosa of Skank, Cindy Blackman Santana, Romeo Santos, Soledad, Wayne Shorter, and more. Stewart and Santana will do eight performances together in as many U.S. cities before splitting for separate tours beginning in June. Continued on page 65

They will rejoin for the second leg of their tour, “Rod Stewart and Santana: The Voice, The Guitar, The Songs” in July and August for 11 more performances throughout North America. In 2007, Stewart was bestowed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen of England. Santana received a 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Award in recognition of lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY® Awards and three Latin GRAMMY® Awards. Nine of his Grammys came in 2000 for his album, “Supernatural,” including: o Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Smooth,” and o Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for “Supernatural.” He also has received the Billboard Century Award (1996) and the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009). Celebrating the chart debut of “Guitar Heaven” (Arista) in 2010, Santana joined the ranks of the Rolling Stones as the only musical act in chart history to score at least one Top 10 album in every decade beginning with the 1960s.

PITTSBURGH POPCORN & BAR 119 ADD TO REFRESHMENT OPTIONS By: Pam Thompson

Guests attending events at CONSOL Energy Center — whether it’s Pittsburgh Penguins hockey, a concert, the circus or some other entertainment — can enjoy two new refreshment options that are sure to complement their outings. Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. and Bar 119 are two new concessions this season. The specialty popcorn purveyor and the bar are located near each other, as well as another Pittsburgh favorite, Primanti’s, on the FedEx Level of CONSOL Energy Center. “We thought our popcorn would be a great fit while watching a hockey game. It’s a great snack that appeals to everyone watching the game: kids and adults,” says Rob Day, a founder and Co-CEO of the Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. “Our customers in the CONSOL Energy Center have been very excited to see us at this location,” Day says. Likewise, Pittsburgh Penguins Senior Vice President David Peart says that Bar 119 has been “very well received.” “Fans have flocked to the bar since it opened. It has been a great addition to the fan experience,” Peart says. Bar 119, situated directly behind Section 119, opened in response to comments from fans, says Peart. Continued on page 75

“The need to have this sort of full service bar on that level came from the fan forums that we host,” says Peart explaining that Bar 119 opened early this year after fans frequently commented that access to a bar was needed in this area of the center. “We responded to that. It is part of our ongoing effort to review what we’re doing and to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the fans,” Peart says. “Until we added this location, most fans, outside of our premium sections, didn’t have the ability to buy spirits, wine, beer or mixed drinks for the games,” he explains. “This location – which had been a retail space – was specifically chosen to meet the needs of the fans,” Peart says of Bar 119. Bar 119, like all of the Pittsburgh Penguins concessions, is operated by ARAMARK. ARAMARK serves CONSOL Energy Center guests food and beverages ranging from simple to sophisticated catering menus and club fare to nachos, burgers and dogs in the casual eateries throughout the building. There are stand-up tables in the area of Bar 119. “We will be doing drink specials and other promotional activities in that area,” Peart says, adding that there are plans for giveaways and special brand promotions. For Penguins games, Bar 119 is open pre-game, during intermission and through the end of the third period. Bar 119 is open for all events, and the Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. is open for Pittsburgh Penguins games, as well as for most special events and concerts. Regarding choices at the newest Pittsburgh Popcorn site in CONSOL Energy Center, Day says, “We are currently selling a variety of popcorn flavors by the bag. Flavors include the following: chocolate caramel, brown butter caramel, peanut butter cup, cheddar cheese, kettle corn (and) buttery movie style.” When asked if any special flavors of popcorn are being planned for the CONSOL Energy Center site, Day says, “We are, some flavors are in the pipeline but we don’t know which ones yet. Some will be sweet and some will be savory.” Continued on page 76

Day, the sole creator of Pittsburgh Popcorn flavors when the business began in March 2008, says, “Yes, I am still in charge of new flavor development. I also receive feedback on flavors from Genalle as well.” “Genalle” is Genalle Passanante, Day’s wife, co-founder and Co-CEO of Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. The pair met over popcorn in New York. Day has created popcorn treats such as “Watermelon” which contains no We thought our seeds, “Mesquite BBQ,” “Corn Chocula,” The Cajun” inspired by popcorn would New Orleans cooking, Cinnamon be a great fit . . . Toast” with extra cinnamon sugar, It’s a great snack and “Dill Pickles.” “We decided to open the that appeals to business after deciding Pittsburgh everyone. needed a good popcorn shop,” Day says. The couple opened their first store in the Strip District, and the decision to open in CONSOL Energy Center last November brings Pittsburgh Popcorn to six locations in the Greater Pittsburgh area, says Day. Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. offers a Pittsburgh Penguins 3.5 gallon popcorn tin at its retail locations and online at its website, www.pghpopcorn.com. Day says he isn’t sure if it will be available at the company’s CONSOL Energy Center location. Day says that the company is exploring the possibility of offering PenguinsPittsburgh Popcorn products in the future. Pittsburgh Popcorn stores offer weekly specials catering to everyone regardless of whether their tastes go toward savory or sweet recipes. Recent weekly specials included Herbed White Cheddar, Cheesy Garlic Bread and Buffalo Wing, as well as Orange Peppered Caramel, Frank n Berry and Shattered Toffee. Descriptions of the popcorn flavors are totally enthralling to those seeking a tasty snack. For instance Chunky Chocolate Caramel – billed as the Next Phase in Caramel – is described as “Made with fresh caramel corn and drizzled (some say glopped) with over generous amounts of creamy milk chocolate goodness.” “Chicago Style” brings together two popular flavors to charm popcorn enthusiasts with a sweet and savory combination. It’s made by mixing caramel corn and cheddar corn together. Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. bills this recipe as “a favorite among advanced popcorn connoisseurs.” Fans agree that they love their Pittsburgh Popcorn, but their favorite flavors are not as clear cut. In reviews, fans favored recipes including: “Spicy Bacon,” “Gingerbread,” “Wisconsin Cheddar,” “Southwest,” “Buffalo,” and “Nutella.” | 76 |
