BUBLÉ’S “TO BE LOVED” CONCERT TO CHARM PITTSBURGH AUDIENCE By: Pam Thompson Singer, songwriter, performer Michael Bublé, the family man, will charm his audience at CONSOL Energy Center this September. When his “To Be Loved” tour arrives in Pittsburgh, Bublé likely will be showing off more than his new album. Expect some pictures of his new son who is to arrive this August on an undisclosed date. The “To Be Loved” U.S. tour begins in September following performances in Ireland and the U.K. this summer. The European tour includes 10 performances at the O2 in London. In order to spend more family time, Bublé has arranged his tour schedule with a couple of weeks on the road and a couple of weeks off. “To Be Loved” represents Bublé’s fifth tour and his eighth album. Six of his eight albums have been nominated for Grammy Awards. Bublé is a three-time Grammy Award winner for the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Albums: “Call Me Irresponsible,” 2008, “Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden,” 2010, and “Crazy Love,” 2011. He has been nominated eight times for Grammy Awards. Chances are that “To Be Loved” could net the same success as Bublé’s earlier work. Released this spring, it made its debut at Number One on the Billboard 200 to become his fourth consecutive Number One album on that chart. Reviews of “To Be Loved” note its joyfulness, Bublé style, and classic selections. Continued on page 4

In interview after interview, the performer says that with all due respect and appreciation for his fans, having a successful new album is fantastic, but still nowhere near as important or satisfying as his Number One priority — his family. Bublé says he is thrilled over the pregnancy of his wife, Luisana Lopilato, the Argentine actress and model, and the imminent arrival of their son. Bublé-ing over at the thought, he says, “I’ve never changed a diaper in my life…I’m so excited… .I can’t imagine how I’m going to feel.” Known for his audience rapport, Bublé says he sings to his wife and their unborn baby, and he wasn’t shy on “The Graham Norton Show” in Britain, when he even sang to baby bumps in the audience. Bending over to two expectant moms’ bellies, he serenaded with “Young at Heart,” and an adaptation of “Baby One More Time” with the lyrics “Kick me baby, one more time.” Produced by Bublé’s long-time collaborator Bob Rock, “To Be Loved,” includes 14 tracks. Bublé says, “My new record is about love, happiness, fun and yummy things…. I love the songs we selected this time out. It was also terrific working once again with my songwriting partners.” Joining him on “To Be Loved” are actress Reese Witherspoon on “Something Stupid,” Bryan Adams on the original track, “After All,” Naturally 7 on “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You,” and The Puppini Sisters on “Nevertheless (I’m in Love With You)”. “Bublé calls Witherspoon “the icing” on their duet, “Something Stupid.” It was her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the film “Walk the Line” that attracted Bublé to her as his collaborator on the track. Bublé brings his own style to covers of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” Dean Martin’s “Nevertheless (I’m in Love with You,” the Miracles’ “Who’s Loving Continued on page 6

You,” Jackie Wilson’s “To Be Loved,” and Scotty Wiseman’s “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.” Bublé and Naturally 7 took to the 66th Street Lincoln Center, New York City subway this spring. To promote “To Be Loved,” they sang an a cappella rendition of – Michael Bublé “Who’s Lovin You” with clattering trains and street noises for background. While some commuters hurried by, a small crowd of cell phone videographers paused on the platform to record the moment and enthusiastically applaud the unexpected performance. In addition to becoming a Daddy, Bublé will chalk up another year himself on Sept. 9, when he turns 38. Talking about the opening tune on the album, “You Make Me Feel So Young,” the singer says, “It fits me…I’m the old man and my wife (age 26) is this young kid.” The original single, “It’s a Beautiful Day,” released in advance of the album, is “a song for all of those people who got dumped by a jerk” and celebrated their good fortune, according to Bublé. He admits that he’s been on both sides of the experience. Its lyrics include: “You won’t hear this boy complaining ‘cause I’m glad that you’re the one who got away,” and “Oh, baby, any day that you’re gone away, It’s a beautiful day.” Fans cite Bublé’s attributes as his romantic tendencies, his sense of humor, his rapport with his audiences, his dedication to family and friends, as well as his music. Brenda Joyce of Gibsonia, known as a dedicated Bublé fan by those close to her, says, “I’m also a big American standards fan — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and he (Bublé) is the modern version. He’s Mr. Smooth.” “He comes through the crowd and sits at the edge of the stage,” says Joyce. “He’s just a personable guy.” That he is handsome, a spiffy dresser and willing to joke and make fun of himself seal his popularity. Another fan says, “I love Bublé’s lyrics from, ‘Just Haven’t Met You Yet,’ which are whimsical and hopeful. Bublé makes listeners feel like he’s singing directly to them.”

My new record is about love, happiness, fun and yummy things… I love the songs we selected this time out. It was also terrific working once again with my songwriting partners.

“I might have to wait, I’ll never give up I guess it’s half timing and the other half’s luck Wherever you are, whenever it’s right You’ll come out of nowhere and into my life I just haven’t met you yet.” Bublé’s ability to connect with his audiences often is mentioned as a strength that makes him irresistible. A YouTube video from three years ago showing Bublé’s spontaneous duet with a 15-year-old wannabe performer at his concert has been viewed more than 3.3 million times. Bublé is proud of “Close Your Eyes” one of the four tunes that he co-wrote on “To Be Loved.” “I wrote it about my wife and about the power of all the women in my life – my sisters, my mom, my grandma and all women in general,” he says. The importance that Bublé puts on family isn’t lost on fans, especially in a city like Pittsburgh.

‘HISTORY OF THE EAGLES’ TOUR TO TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT ONE MORE TIME By: Pam Thompson Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, the Eagles are taking it to the limit one more time as they bring their “History of the Eagles,” tour to CONSOL Energy Center this summer. In Native American lore, the eagle symbolizes many things, including leadership, magic, and the story of life. Aptly named, Eagles, the legendary band, has been serenading its fans since the ‘70s. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 15 years ago, the band’s tour celebrates the release their documentary, “History of the Eagles.” The Eagles are Glenn Frey, guitar and vocals, Don Henley, drums and vocals, Joe Walsh, guitar and vocals, and Timothy B. Schmit, bass and vocals. They will perform classics spanning their careers, including “Hotel California,” “New Kid in Town,” Take It to the Limit,” “One of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Best of My Love,” and “Take It Easy.” Also featured in the show will be hits from the band members’ solo careers. The “History of the Eagles” tour will take the group to more than 30 venues throughout the United States and Canada from July through October. The Eagles history spans more than 40 years. Henley and Frey formed the Eagles in 1971 after touring in Linda Ronstadt’s band. Walsh joined in 1975, and Schmit joined in 1980, for the album, “The Long Run,” just before the group unofficially dissolved. Band members pursued individual careers. Their albums, “Hotel California,” and “Greatest Hits Volume 2,” have sold more than 16 million and 11 million copies, respectively. The Eagles released four consecutive Number One albums from 1975 to 1979, which together topped Billboard’s album chart for 27 weeks: o “One of These Nights o “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 o “Hotel California,” and o “The Long Run.” “Hell Freezes Over,” their reunion album in 1994, charted at Number One for two weeks, demonstrating that the band was as vital as ever. The Eagles sold more albums in the 1970s than any other American band. While inactive in the 1980s, their music continued selling at a rate of 1.5 million copies a year. The documentary, “History of the Eagles” made its television broadcast debut on Showtime in February. It earned the network its highest rating for a music documentary in eight years. Part One received great acclaim when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year. It premiered at the Sundance London Film and Music Festival in April. A collaboration of the Pittsburgh Penguins, VisitPittsburgh and CONSOL Energy Center management is attracting a parade of national sporting events into Pittsburgh making it a destination and earning it attention, visitors and dollars.

The consortium’s most recent win, the 2014 USA Gymnastics Championship is a first-time event for Pittsburgh. Rounds 2 and 3 of the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championship were played at CONSOL Energy Center last year and will return again in 2015. Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh, says, “The fact that they came back is testament to how well Pittsburgh performed for these championships last year.” The joint effort also attracted this year’s NCAA Frozen Four to CONSOL Energy Center, as well as last year’s National Hockey League Draft, and in September, the 2nd annual CCM/USA Hockey All American Prospects Game takes place at CONSOL Energy Center. This movement is expected to continue, according to Jay Cooper, regional vice president of AEG Facilities, who says, “VisitPittsburgh, the Penguins and AEG are very active at the moment looking at NCAA championships until 2018.” Travis Williams, Pittsburgh Penguins Chief Operating Officer, says: “When CONSOL Energy Center was being built, the Penguins organization promised that it would be more than a hockey venue. We want to attract major national athletic events that not only showcase the arena, but also showcase the City of Pittsburgh. “By collaborating with VisitPittsburgh, the Penguins organization and AEG are able to draw on the collective political and corporate resources of the city to attract these events. Together, we are able to show the NCAA and national governing bodies like USA Gymnastics and USA Hockey that the City of Pittsburgh is the best at hosting top tier events in front of our passionate sports fans at any of our first class venues.” Continued on page 32

Williams, Davis and Cooper agree that Pittsburgh fans come in at the top of the list of the city’s attributes.

Cooper concurs: “In Pittsburgh we have a high degree of collaboration between VisitPittsburgh, the Penguins and AEG to make the experience of any sports organization a seamless one. The ability to tie all of these community assets together is no small task and we take a team approach to making sure the city is well represented in the eyes of the sports organization, the athletes and the fans. “Nothing comes to Pittsburgh unless they are invited,” says Davis. “People who ordinarily wouldn’t visit Pittsburgh come for major events. As Pittsburghers, we know instinctively that they will fall in love with the city when they see it,” says Davis. “It’s what we call ‘forced tourism.’” Williams, Davis and Cooper agree that Pittsburgh fans come in at the top of the list of the city’s attributes. Williams says, “We have the most passionate sports fans in the country. But they not only support these sporting events, they roll out the welcome mat for them in a way that no other city does. This passion and hospitality is not lost on these organizations when they are here.” “These special events draw brand new outside money into the community to help pay our expenses. Brand new outside money is the best kind,” Davis says. “It’s all about the residents of Pittsburgh benefiting…it brings jobs, it brings economic activity.” | 32 |

PROSPECTS ADD NEW GEM TO CITY’S HOCKEY CROWN By: Pam Thompson

A new jewel shines on the Steel City’s hockey crown as preparations are under way for the playing of the second annual CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins in September. Featuring 40 of the top American-born prospects eligible for the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft, the event will be staged in CONSOL Energy Center. The game will celebrate Pittsburgh hockey further with the selection of two former Penguins as head coaches of the prospect teams. Pittsburgh Penguins alumni, Mark Johnson of Madison, Wis., and Joe Mullen of New York City, will be the head coaches. Both Johnson and Mullen are members of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and Lester Patrick Trophy recipients for their outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Mullen, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, won two of those honors with the Penguins in 1991 and 1992. He skated for Team USA at the 1979 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship and three Canada Cups (1984, 1987 and 1991). He was a three-time NHL All-Star and two-time recipient of the Lady Bing Trophy. He was the first American to record 500 career goals and 1,000 career points in the NHL. In 17 seasons, he tallied 502 goals and 561 assists in 1,062 games. Recently completing his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers, Mullen also served as an assistant coach for the Penguins from 2000 to 2006 and was head coach of the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for part of 2005-2006. Johnson started his 11-season NHL career in Pittsburgh in 1980.

In 669 career games, he tallied 203 goals and 305 assists. He was an NHL All-Star in 1983-84. He represented the United States at 12 major international tournaments, including the “Miracle on Ice” squad at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, N.Y., in which he posted a team-best 11 points during the gold medal run. In his career coaching women’s hockey, Johnson’s accomplishments include: o culminating his four years as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team with a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games o steering Team USA to the gold medal in 2009 and silver in 2007 at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, as well as gold medal at the 2009 IIHF Women’s Under-18 World Championship, and o coaching his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, to four NCAA women’s national championships between 2006 and 2011. A combination of qualities resulted in the ice at CONSOL Energy Center becoming the stage for the prestigious game. Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey says, “We’re thrilled to bring the 2013 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and showcase the future stars of the National Hockey League on the CONSOL Energy Center ice. It’s because of the passionate and knowledgeable fan base that we’re bringing this game to Pittsburgh. We know the fans will really enjoy it.” The CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game at CONSOL Energy Center contributes to building Pittsburgh’s reputation as the capital city of hockey. The prospects game follows two other amateur hockey gems scheduled Continued on page 42

The NHL Draft also heaped some bling on CONSOL Energy Center and Pittsburgh’s hockey scene a year ago. It was the first time that the draft had been held in Pittsburgh since 1997. In regard to the prominence of hockey in the Pittsburgh region and in Pennsylvania, Ogrean says, “I’m not sure people realize it, but the state of Pennsylvania is the fifth largest state in terms of players in our country. In particular, Western Pennsylvania has really developed some elite level athletes recently, including four players that were part of our gold medal-winning 2013 U.S. National Junior Team.” Ogrean continues, “It’s been fun to watch Pittsburgh evolve into the wonderful hockey hotbed it is today and many people deserve credit, from the terrific volunteers on the youth side of the sport, up to Mario, Ron Burkle, Sidney Crosby, Ray Shero and too many others to name.” “Pittsburgh is a city filled with passionate hockey fans and we’re – David Morehouse extremely pleased to work with USA Hockey in bringing the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game to the CONSOL Energy Center this fall,” says David Morehouse, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “It will be a unique opportunity for our fans to see the future American stars of the NHL — some which will undoubtedly play in Pittsburgh — all on the same sheet of ice.” Ogrean says, “We know fans will enjoy seeing the very best young hockey talent our country has to offer and we look forward to working with the Penguins and CONSOL Energy Center staff in what will be a terrific showcase for our game.” Players are selected by USA Hockey in consultation with NHL Central Scouting. Dave Fischer, senior director of communications for USA Hockey, says, “We’re excited that the game has evolved in our country to the point where

we have the high-end talent to stage a game like this. This is a very unique opportunity for fans to (see) the very top American players before they make it big time in the NHL.” Team members for the All American prospects teams will come from the United States Hockey League, USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, NCAA Division I Hockey, and the Canadian Hockey League, as well as high school hockey and other junior leagues in the United States, says Fischer. Talent tapped for the 2013 game will be eligible for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, according to Ogrean who says that for the 2014 entry draft, North American players born from Jan. 1, 1994 through Sept. 15, 1996 are eligible. Of the 40 players that competed in the inaugural CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game, 30 were from the United States Hockey League, including 21 from USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. Players also came from NCAA Division I hockey as well as the Canadian Hockey League. Players and their team assignments will be announced this summer, as well as additional details, Fischer says. ‘PLUM’ ARTISTS CREATE STARS’ CUSTOM GIFTS By: Pam Thompson When AEG wanted customized goalie masks for performers appearing at CONSOL Energy Center, the staff searched near and far and found John Shook and Alysa Sheats of Graphic Cellar in Plum Borough. Shook and Sheats had the talent and skill necessary to design and create unique items like the goalie masks. At Graphic Cellar, they operate a custom airbrush and fine art shop specializing in clothing and accessories, license plates, athletic helmets, automotive murals, screen printing and artistic services. The business does event airbrushing for every type of party, sports and dance competitions, and fundraising events in which 10 percent of sales benefit the host organization. “Anything that you can imagine, we can create at Graphic Cellar,” Shook says. He says that their customers include dance reality series cast members, Melissa, Kelly and Jill of “Dance Moms,” who have purchased customized clothing, suitcases and cosmetic cases. Their art appears on a carousel horse and western hats, cars, motorcycles and jet skis, as well as equipment for athletes, dancers and cheerleaders. A Justin Bieber-themed goalie mask took both artists nearly 15 hours to finish. Conversely, they also hand paint softball helmets that each take about 20 minutes to complete. Sheats, a graphic designer, studied at Edinboro University, and Shook studied industrial design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Together they use their technical and artistic talents to create one of a kind, functional art. PREMIUM TICKETS ENHANCE EVENTS By: Pam Thompson Special events at CONSOL Energy Center can be even more memorable celebrations when viewed from preferred seating in the arena’s suites and loges. Many prefer loge or suite accommodations when they entertain for private or business outings, says Chad Slencak, Pittsburgh Penguins vice president of ticket sales. “Overall it’s a better experience due to the comfort and privacy,” he says adding that event-goers make preferred seating arrangements for birthdays and other special occasions, as well as business entertaining and to reward employees. Discussing suite and loge seating, Slencak says, “In both cases there is more room, comfortable seating and the privacy effect.” He advises those interested in special seating arrangements to contact the Pittsburgh Penguins within a month of a show’s tickets going on sale. Slencak says that loge seating, which is available in four-seat groupings, works well for smaller groups. Loge boxes, an innovative premium seating concept found in new arenas, provide a comfortable, upscale, semi-private area for enjoying events. In addition to the personal space, loge boxes deliver the highest level of hospitality at a fraction of the cost of an executive suite. MUSE TOUR TO BRING ‘HUGE NOISE’ TO CITY By: Pam Thompson The Grammy Award winning British rock band, Muse brings The 2nd Law world tour to Pittsburgh in September. Muse is touring in Europe and Asia this summer before beginning their U.S. tour. Based on the reaction of European audiences, the show at CONSOL Energy Center should be an audacious occasion. In online posts fans say: “… They were brilliant. What an amazing show. Never a dull moment. Lighting effect was amazing. The whole thing (was) totally unforgettable… would love to see them again.” “Muse, as expected, were absolutely amazing. They were onstage for about two hours, and really gave it their all, with an amazing lightshow, and lots of extras…. All in all, a fantastic night, with no complaints at all. Just hope we get to see Muse again very soon!” “In one word - wow. Even sitting way up on the second tier opposite from the stage was amazing; we had the most incredible overview of the whole spectacle and were briefly warmed by the heat from the flames. “I would urge anybody to go and see them if they have the opportunity; Matt (Bellamy) has to be one of the best musicians/writers around and it is a true pleasure to alternatively croon along with his falsetto and bounce around to a damn fine huge noise.”

“Unforgettable,” “lots of extras,” and “huge noise” seem to sum up the Muse experience for concert-goers. School pals from Teignmouth, Devon in England, Matthew Bellamy, vocalist, Dominic Howard, percussionist, and Chris Wolstenholme. Bassist, formed Muse Continued from page 61 in 1994. Fans call Bellamy, the lead singer, “genius,” “a modern day Mozart,” and “a modern day Freddie Mercury.” He wrote all of the songs for “The 2nd Law,” except for “Save Me,” and “Liquid State,” which are the work of Wolstenholme. Muse collaborated on the music for the film, “World War Z,” and performed a free concert in conjunction with the movie’s London premier in June. “The 2nd Law” album made its debut at Number Two on the Billboard 200, which was a new high for Muse in the United States. It also debuted at Number Two in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Korea and Spain. The album was Muse’s fourth Number One in the United Kingdom, and also earned Number One in 13 other countries. “The 2nd Law” was nominated for the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, and “Madness” was nominated for Best Rock Song. The band has won numerous awards around the world including a Best Rock Album Grammy Award and an American Music Award for “The Resistance.” Muse has created eight albums, including five studio albums and sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Opening in Pittsburgh for Muse will be Cage The Elephant from Bowling Green, Ky. The group recently finished work on its third album. Its members are Matt Shultz on vocals, Brad Shultz and Lincoln Parish on guitars, Daniel Tichenor on bass and vocals, and Jared Champion on drums. Muse and Cage The Elephant perform at CONSOL Energy Center on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
