THE WHO TO CELEBRATE 50-YEAR ROCK LEGACY WITH PITTSBURGH SHOW By: Pam Thompson
THE WHO HITS 50! Tour will play CONSOL Energy Center in October celebrating the 50-year legacy of one of the rock world’s most influential bands and demonstrating why and how The Who became pioneers and legends. The Pittsburgh concert will be part of the second leg of The Who’s North American tour. It launches in September with 24 dates, starting on the West Coast and progressing across Canada and the Midwest, concluding in the Northeast in early November. The tour kicked off in April in Tampa, Fla., with 20 performances scheduled through May. In June, The Who headed to Europe to begin a series of summer concerts before returning to North America. The Who have marked farewells, greatest hits, reunions and anniversaries, as well as stellar successes and fatal tragedies. Roger Daltrey, front man and ostensibly the founding member of The Who, says of the tour, “This is the beginning of the long goodbye.” Pete Townshend, the band’s creative force and songwriter, says, “We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we’re lucky to be alive and still touring.” Continued on page 4

Special tour guests will be Joan Jett & the Blackhearts who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this spring. The set list for The Who concert will take fans through the group’s five-decade career from its early days to the present with music from classic albums including Who’s Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, My Generation and Live at Leeds. A donation of $1 for each tour ticket sold will benefit Teen Cancer America www.teencanceramerica.org a charity supported by The Who that creates centers to meet the needs of teen cancer patients. Daltrey and Townshend are credited with being the driving force for Teen Cancer America. They worked with the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK prior to founding its U.S. counterpart. The compilation album, The Who Hits 50! was released last October as a CD deluxe edition, a single CD edition and a digital download. Townshend describes the album as “hits, picks, mixes and misses.” The Who Hits 50! includes the band’s music from 1964 to “Be Lucky,” its new song, as well as some lesser known tunes, including “Dogs,” “Call Me Lightning,” and “Let’s See Action.” The Who have sold more than 100 million records. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005, The Who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammy Foundation in 2001 for creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the recording industry. The Who was the first rock band bestowed with Kennedy Center Honors in 2008 when Daltrey and Townshend received awards. When the band formed, the four distinct personalities of its original members melded together resulting in a creative tension in its recordings and performances, such as “My Generation,” “Magic Bus,” and “”Won’t Get Fooled Again,” as well as the innovative rock opera, “Tommy,” and many other memorable works. Three members of the original band which evolved from Daltrey’s group, The Detours, were playing together by 1962, and it wasn’t until 1964, that drummer Keith Moon joined Daltrey, Townshend and John Entwistle. It was the same year that the band changed its name three times before returning to, and settling on “The Who.” It also was the year when Townshend smashed his first guitar – by accident. The Who’s historical account says that Townshend was so frustrated by the mishap that he proceeded to reduce the guitar to splinters, which turned out to be “the most exciting live act pop has ever seen.” Daltrey’s roaring vocals, Entwistle’s virtuosity on bass, Moon’s frenetic hammering and Townshend’s songwriting and visual stage style resulted in convention-busting performance art. In 1969, The Who played Woodstock, solidifying their reputation as a rock legend. When Bruce Springsteen presented Townshend with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for charity in May, he told the audience about his experience seeing The Who when they opened for Herman’s Hermits in 1967. “For some reason,” Springsteen says, “this music and the demolishing of all these perfectly fine instruments filled me with incredible joy….” The Boss says that he emulated The Who at a school dance, substituting a pilfered vase of flowers for his dear guitar, in a smashing scene at the end of his gig. PITTSBURGH FANS GET SHANIA TWAIN TOUR By: Pam Thompson
This summer, Shania Twain’s Pittsburgh fans get what others around the world are clamoring for – the country pop rock queen’s ROCK THIS COUNTRY tour plays CONSOL Energy Center. When Twain delivered the good news that she would tour for the first time in more than a decade, she also delivered bad news to her fans. ROCK THIS COUNTRY also will be her last tour. These announcements resulted in fans around the globe, begging via social media for one more concert in their corners of the universe. From Uruguay, Argentina and Chile, to the U.K., Ireland, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as locales throughout Australia, fans are imploring Shania to visit them one last time. Petitioners had to be encouraged this spring when due to overwhelming fan demand, 19 concerts were added to the North American farewell tour increasing it to 67 performances. Adored by fans worldwide, Twain has multi-platinum album sales in 32 countries with more than 75 million albums sold, and 17 Top 10 singles. Many musicians tour in support of their new albums, but in Twain’s case, she performs songs from her rich repertoire in a brand new production for ROCK THIS COUNTRY. Twain plans to release a fifth studio album after her ROCK THIS COUNTRY tour concludes. The tour, which kicked off in early June, travels to 49 U.S. cities including Pittsburgh, and 18 cities across Canada, Twain’s homeland. “It’s a Shania they’ve never seen before,” Twain says, adding, “A lot of years have gone by and I’ve got a lot more to share.” She says that the new tour has a different spirit than her past tours. The tour shares the name of Twain’s single released in 2000, in which she chants “We’re gonna rock this country.” Twain hit the road a scant six months after completing a two-year residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas last December. Her show, “Shania: Still The One” received favorable reviews throughout its run of 105 performances. “This is a celebration tour,” says Twain, who turns 50 this August. Canadian musician and actor, Wes Mack signed on to open for most of the June concerts, and Grammy nominated singer/ songwriter Gavin DeGraw took over on June 30 for concerts through August. For every concert ticket sold, a donation of $1.00 is being made to the Shania Kids Can Foundation (SKC), a charity founded by Twain. Shania Kids Can — http://www. shaniakidscan.com — helps primary school age children facing personal problems at home, which result in these youngsters being challenged to function at their full potential in school either socially, behaviorally, academically, or in all three areas.
ROCK THIS COUNTRY will be Twain’s last tour.

SKC’s mission is to educate, inspire and empower children to achieve their full potential, and to increase their chances of equality and opportunities for success. Twain says as a child, she would have benefitted from a system at school like SKC that provides compassionate understanding and support when a child doesn’t have a lunch or money to participate in a field trip. “I promised myself early on in my own childhood that someday I would help kids just like myself cope with their disadvantages and prosper in spite of those challenges. Shania Kids Can Charity Foundation is fulfilling that promise,” Twain says. “I feel luck saved me from falling through the cracks as a child and believe it’s neither wise nor fair to leave the destiny of any child to luck,” Twain says. In another charitable endeavor undertaken this spring, Twain joined with Panthera, a global wild cat conservation organization, to launch #IFAKEIT — https://ifakeit.org. A social media campaign, #IFAKEIT raises awareness of the plight of leopards and provides a simple, sustainable solution to protect the spotted cats while supporting cultures that use leopard skins for religious and cultural ceremonies. The campaign asks people around the world to join the movement and to show how they “fake it” for leopards by posting photos of themselves wearing fake leopard prints to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with the #IFAKEIT tag. In 1993, Twain released her first studio album, Shania Twain. Continued on page 28

Although Twain landed a record deal with Mercury Records on the basis of her original material, her self-titled album debut featured only one of her songs, “God Ain’t Gonna Getcha for That.” Her singles, “What Made You Say That” and “Dance With the One That Brought You” each peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard country singles chart. Her other three studio albums – The Woman In Me (1995), Come On Over (1997), and Up! (2002) – have earned Diamond certification, making Twain the only artist to have three consecutive albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under,” entered the Billboard country singles chart in January 1995, peaking at No. 11. Twain’s second album, The Woman in Me, made its debut on the country albums chart in February of 1995. It has sold 18 million copies, making Twain the best-selling country female artist of all time. When her single “Any Man of Mine,” hit the charts in May 1995, it became the first of her four consecutive No. 1 hits, which included “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!,” “You Win My Love” and “No One Needs to Know.”
Twain is the only artist to have three consecutive albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S.
The Woman In Me won a Grammy for country album of the year and was named album of the year by the Academy of Country Music in 1995. Come On Over, Twain’s third studio album earned her international success and four more Grammy Awards. It is the best-selling country album of all time and the best-selling album released by a female performer. Twain’s Grammy Awards were presented for Best Country Song for “Come On Over” and “You’re Still the One,” and Best Country Female Vocal Performance for “Man! No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 pop chart, solidifying Twain as a crossover artist. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” a Top 5 country hit, earned Twain pop culture recognition when Revlon contracted to use the song in TV ads featuring Twain. Come On Over also spawned Twain’s first major tour with performances in 1998 and 1999. Taking to the road contributed to Twain winning Entertainer of the Year trophies from the ACM and the Country Music Association in 1999. At the top of her game, Twain retreated to her home in Switzerland with her husband at the end of 1999. They welcomed the birth of a son named Eja in the summer of 2001 while working on her next studio album. Up!, which featured her hit single “I’m Gonna Getcha Good” was released in 2002. Twain was on the road for the Up! tour in 2003 and 2004 and released her Greatest Hits album in the fall of 2004. In the spring of 2011, Twain released her memoir, From This Moment On, discussing her life challenges and successes, including her difficult childhood and the demise of her first marriage. “My personal feeling is that if you are able to survive the climb of life on whatever mountain it is you’ve set out to master, and if in the bit between the base and the peak you learn something from both the good and the bad alike, and if you live to tell about it with gratitude, you’ve succeeded.”

PARTNERING, RELATIONSHIP - BUILDING BRING NCAA BACK TO PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson
Maybe it is arena seats up to 24 inches wide or the building’s LEED Gold certification, or an experienced university host partner, or those darn friendly Pittsburghers who welcome visitors to the region. Whatever it is, Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and CONSOL Energy Center are building a relationship with the NCAA that will bring its Men’s Basketball Championship to town again. In 2018, the partners will host NCAA March Madness play for the third time since the arena’s August 2010 opening. It is about relationship building and partnering, says Tim Hassett, Regional Vice President, AEG Facilities and General Manager of CONSOL Energy Center. Hassett relocated to Pittsburgh from New York City two years ago to take on his duties as general manager, including management of all of the arena’s business operations, creation of new events and the development of new revenue opportunities for CONSOL Energy Center. From the beginning, Hassett spoke of his plans to bring as many diverse events as possible to CONSOL Energy Center to provide something for everybody. Continued on page 34

Hassett says: “We have had a terrific relationship with the NCAA since the inception of CONSOL Energy Center. We have partnered with VisitPITTSBURGH and several local universities to win bids for NCAA events – with Duquesne University on several occasions to host high profile Men’s Basketball events, with Robert Morris University to host the Frozen Four, and we came very close to getting awarded the Women’s Final Four in a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh. I think Pittsburgh has proven to be a very supportive and fertile market for college athletics, and we are hopeful to have more success on this front moving forward.” Hassett lists the NCAA events, as well as other major sporting events that have come to Pittsburgh in the past five years. “CONSOL Energy Center has been privileged to host several marquee type events that have reinforced Pittsburgh’s reputation – the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2013 Frozen Four, the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships and the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament,” Hassett says.
As a ‘sports town,’ Pittsburgh is second to none.

“Going forward, we have been awarded the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship in 2017, and will again host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2018,” Hassett adds. “As a ‘sports town,’ Pittsburgh is second to none. In addition to the marquee events listed above, the Penguins have sold out 375 consecutive home games. The Three Rivers Classic, a college hockey tournament, had three teams ranked in the top 20 last year. The City Game, an annual rivalry between Pitt and Duquesne is getting bigger and bigger, and we have had great success bringing boxing back into the market during the past year,” he notes. Hassett says, “The entities that comprise the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County — as it pertains to identifying and attracting major events to our area that will enhance the Friendly Pittsburghers quality of life for our residents and the economic impact to our readily welcome visitors businesses — are committed to to the region. this effort.” Further he says, “VisitPITTSBURGH has been rebranding itself toward a more diverse and wideranging spectrum of activities, the mayor’s office and the county executive’s office are engaged, and there have been discussions among the parties about forming a sports commission to be more focused on leading the effort to identify, seek and attract events that will be a benefit to the entire community. All of the major sports franchises and many of the local universities have been part of these discussions as well. I think this can be a very fruitful course for our city, and the future is bright.” || 37 37 |
SUMMER SOUNDS MELODIOUS THANKS TO BARBERSHOP SOCIETY By: Pam Thompson
The sounds of summer in Pittsburgh are more melodious this year thanks to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Pittsburgh 2015 Bridge to Harmony, its international convention. CONSOL Energy Center and other Pittsburgh venues hosted the singing conventioneers’ banner event. The Barbershop Harmony Society lists 26 chapters within 100 miles of Pittsburgh. Its membership includes nearly 25,000 men in the U.S. and Canada. Barbershop quartets and choruses, as well as fans of harmonizing came in June with plans to get their fill of performing, competing and learning about the finer points of barbershop singing during the convention scheduled through the Fourth of July weekend. “Harmony University” featured educational sessions including “Goodbye Stage Fright,” “Tin Pan Alley,” and “Chorus Directing: Solving the Most Common Problems,” and organizational topics such as “Likes, Tweets and Home Pages,” “Advanced Social Media,” and “Starting a New Chapter.” More than 50 teams including “Lemon Squeezy,” “Hot Air Buffoons,” “Frank The Dog,” and “Blue Steele” competed in the International Quartet Contest. “Westminster Chorus,” “Heralds of Harmony,” “Polytonix Chorus,” and “Harbourtown Sound,” were among nearly 30 choruses from across the United States and Canada qualified to sing for top honors. Tim Hassett, Regional Vice President, AEG Facilities and General Manager of CONSOL Energy Center says, “Some years ago, the Barbershop Harmony Society enjoyed a great deal of success when they visited Pittsburgh, and thanks to the on-going re-vitalization of the city, the addition of the new CONSOL Energy Center and the efforts of VisitPITTSBURGH to promote the city, they decided to return.” Hassett adds, “The city is really emerging as a vibrant place to hold a conference or event, and more and more groups are starting to take notice.” Craig Davis, VisitPITTSBURGH President and CEO, says, “2015 is indeed shaping up to be a stellar year for meetings and conventions, and the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention will be a big part of that.” It was projected that some 5,500 society members would spend $7.3 million in Pittsburgh and provide spontaneous vocalizing and impromptu performances throughout the city, Davis says. Among festivities coinciding with the society’s convention were the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, Pirates games and Fourth of July celebrations. Davis says, “It’s advantageous to show how alive and vibrant we are as a city. This is truly an example of where everyone wins.” He notes that the visitors had a variety of entertainment available in addition to their convention activities, and the city’s local attractions, hospitality community, sports teams and event producers received extra support from the Barbershop Harmony Society members. Davis says, “The last time this group was here it was during the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and they had a great time with that.” Discussing why Pittsburgh, CONSOL Energy Center and the city’s other venues were selected by the Barbershop Harmony Society, Davis says, “Pittsburgh is attractive because of our centralized geographic location and our affordability, too.” He adds, “Plus, we couldn’t have done this without local support, and we have a super-strong local organizing committee. We’ve been actively pursuing bringing this group back to Pittsburgh for a long time. The last time they were here it was in 1994 at the then Civic Arena.”

“CONSOL Energy Center was selected because it offers state-of-the-art technology,” Davis says, adding, “The Barbershop Harmony Society actually booked this event in 2007, before the center was built.” Hassett concurs, “These things are really group efforts. In this case, VisitPITTSBURGH, the hotel industry and local city and county political leaders, played large roles in attracting this event to Pittsburgh and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, and were instrumental in pulling together the resources to support the event’s activities among the many local businesses, hotels, venues and the like.” According to Davis, “The Pittsburgh hospitality community had fond memories of this group when they met here in the 1990s, so everyone worked hard to entice them back. So together with VisitPITTSBURGH, we were able to put together a strong package that made Pittsburgh come out on top of other cities that were in contention for the business.” Davis and Hassett point out that Pittsburgh continues to draw banner events to the environs of the three rivers. Davis notes, “Pittsburgh has had the distinction of hosting the G20 Pittsburgh Summit in 2009, which was a seminal event in the city’s history. The two-day event, which brought considerable recognition and kudos Continued on page 44

For this conference of young, future world leaders, we had 1,300 delegates from 182 countries stand side-by-side with luminaries such as author Fatima Bhutto, musician and social activist Sir Bob Geldof, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.” As well as being the venue for concerts like Garth Brooks’ four-day run in February, Paul McCartney, One Direction and Maroon 5, Hassett says: o The NCAA has chosen Pittsburgh and CONSOL Energy Center to host championships on four occasions. o USA Gymnastics brought its four-day championships to CONSOL Energy Center in 2014, and o The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship is due at CONSOL Energy Center in 2017. Davis is looking ahead to the next banner event to be held in Pittsburgh, and he says, “Hosting the Barbershop Harmony Society puts Pittsburgh in good stead to host the female version called Sweet Adelines International, another great group that we can pursue.”

FAIRY TALE “PRINCESSES” DISCUSS DISNEY SHOW By: Pam Thompson
Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales presents three shows at CONSOL Energy Center this summer. Billed as “pure magic,” the live theatrical experience brings to life the stories of “Cinderella,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The production combines dynamic storytelling, award winning music, stunning costumes, glittering special effects, and three princesses a la Disney to enthrall audiences of all ages. The actresses portraying Cinderella, Maggie Woodard; Belle, Devon Lewno, and Snow White, Tabitha Jones, share some insight into the show. Lewno says, “There are a lot of surprises. Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales features amazing special effects, and many audience participation moments, which allow everyone to be a part of the story.” She adds, “When people come to see our show, they will experience an authentic Disney product. With stunning costumes and an incredible set, audiences get to see over 25 of their favorite Disney characters all in 90 minutes.” Woodard says, “Our show is a highly interactive experience. The characters always need the audience to help make the magic come to life.” Continued on page 48

She adds, “They will get to sing ‘Heigh Ho’ with all seven dwarfs, be mesmerized by the Fairy Godmother transforming Cinderella’s rags into a beautiful ball gown, and watch an epic battle between Gaston and the Beast.” Jones says that audiences are “…immersed in these wonderful stories…the costumes, lighting and dancing are unforgettable.” Lewno adds, “…these three stories are so timeless, there are characters and songs that parents and grandparents will recognize and enjoy as well.” Jones and Lewno say that the finale might be the favorite part of the show for audiences. Lots of children come to I want each audience the front of the stage to wave to member to follow the characters during the finale, their own dreams. Lewno says. Identifying the audience’s favorite part of the show is tougher for Woodard. She says, “It’s hard to choose just one part of the show that is the audience’s favorite. I would have to say that when Mickey takes the stage, when the Prince wakes Snow White with a kiss, when the Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella’s dress into a beautiful ball gown, and when the Beast and Belle fall in love are all moments where the audience goes wild.” She does have her own favorite part of the show that comes not in her fairy tale, “Cinderella,” but during “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”: “Snow White is tempted by the Evil Queen, disguised as an old hag, to take a bite of a poisoned apple. She asks the audience if she should take a bite. The audience yells very loudly that ‘No!’ she shouldn’t take a bite. I love how concerned everyone is for Snow White.” Continued on page 50

The big production numbers are Jones’ favorite part of the show: “For example, Snow White and all seven dwarfs are on stage singing and dancing to the fun upbeat song of ‘Heigh Ho’; Belle, Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth and Lumiere are joined on stage by dancing napkins and silverware to perform the song ‘Be Our Guest,’ and Cinderella and Prince Charming perform a beautiful waltz at the ball.” Lewno explains that her role as Belle provides her favorite part of the show: “When I was little I always dreamed of wearing a ball gown and dancing with a prince. Getting the opportunity to do that is a dream come true.” Discussing the most challenging part of portraying Belle, Lewno says, “It can be very physically demanding. My role involves lots of running, dancing and quick costume changes. There’s no downtime, but it’s all worth it to put on a great show.” Both Jones and Woodard say that their greatest challenges in playing their princess roles is being true to their characters. Elaborating, Woodard says, “It is a fun challenge to always keep my portrayal of Cinderella fresh and true to the story. Cinderella is gracious, caring and hopeful. She never gives up on her dreams, and I want each audience member to follow their own dreams.” There are things about the show that might surprise audiences, according to the princesses. Jones says, “The show originally opened in Shanghai in 2008.” “The costumes of Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales are designed by Tony award winner, Gregg Barnes,” says Woodard. Lewno says, “…This production travels all around the world. We were most recently in Australia and before that Southeast Asia, where we actually performed the show in Mandarin.” The actresses share advice for others who would like roles like theirs. “Go for it,” says Jones. “Don’t let anything get in your way of fulfilling what you want. Be yourself, and smile big.” Continued on page 52

“Never give up!” says Woodard. “I auditioned for Disney Live! at least seven times before I landed the job. Auditions are always a learning experience even if you don’t get the job. You will learn something for your next audition. Dream big!” Lewno says that she didn’t get a call saying that she had the job until eight months after she auditioned. Her advice: “Practice makes perfect. If you’re after a career on stage, hone your craft. Take lessons, go to every audition you can to get experience, and above all, be passionate and have fun!” The actresses also shared messages from the princesses that they portray. o Belle is honored that her fans love her story. It’s also one of her favorite stories. o Snow White says, “Never stop wishing for your heart’s desire.” o Cinderella, who would love to see everyone at a show, says, “…Remember to never stop dreaming.”

EPIC MARVEL UNIVERSE LIVE! COMES TO CITY IN OCTOBER By: Pam Thompson
It will be all about stunts, special effects and action, when the super heroes and villains of Marvel Universe LIVE! come to CONSOL Energy Center in October for seven performances. Krystle Martin who portrays Captain Marvel says, “It’s a feature length, original story line revolving around the battle for the Cosmic Cube — the ultimate source of power in the universe.” Joe Cox, who portrays Nick Fury says, “There really is something here for everyone. From long-time fans of the Marvel Comics characters to tiny, young Avengers barely big enough to lift a shield, Marvel Universe LIVE! is tailored from top to bottom to deliver thrills and chills.” The cast of more than 20 entertainers enact Spider-Man, Iron Man and other super heroes in epic fight scenes saving the world from the evil likes of Loki, Green Goblin and others. Movie quality special effects, a car flip, flying, high falls, and death-defying motorcycle jumps keep fans on the edges of their seats, Martin says. “Besides years of acting, martial arts, parkour, gymnastics, and stunt training our cast brought to the table when they joined tour, we’ve rehearsed for months to be able to perform these amazing stunts with safety, precision, and a fully realized character,” she says. The actors agree that the first appearance of the Hulk may be audiences’ favorite part of the show. “If I had to pick one moment that never fails to get a reaction from audiences, it would have to be the first time that the Hulk is revealed. Standing 8 feet tall and nearly as wide, he’s a true powerhouse of a character. When he’s on the stage, absolutely no one can look away from him, so commanding is his presence,” says Cox. Martin concurs, “Based on the uproarious applause when the Hulk appears for the first time, I’d say that’s an audience favorite. And when you see the larger-than-life character, I think you’ll agree.” Martin says that Captain Marvel tells her fans, “Fly high to reach your goals, fight for what you believe in, and always have your friend’s back.”
There really is something here for everyone.

To convincingly play Captain Marvel, Martin says that she pulls upon her acting and stunt training: “After I received my degree in acting from UCLA, I started going to stunt workouts, I furthered my stage combat training, learned high falls, taught trapeze, and trained in wirework — which I pull from a lot when I fly in the show. And not being afraid of heights definitely helps since I fly up to about 40 feet high.” Nick Fury, Cox’s alter ego, says, “Stay strong, train hard, remain focused on your goal and never underestimate the power of teamwork.” Cox follows his character’s wisdom: “My role is intense and physically demanding so it’s important that I spend time really warming up my muscles and joints to ensure that I can continue to safely perform my duties without breaking my body down from overuse or exposing myself to the common injuries that so often plague long-term performers in this industry. I also spend a lot of time conferring with my fellow performers, reviewing choreography and practicing the stunts that they are involved in. The more focused we can get everyone involved and the tighter and more consistent we can make our transitions, the less likely anyone is to be caught unprepared and possibly injured.” Discussing the most challenging aspect of her role, Martin says, “Honestly, when I was cast, I’d never heard of Captain Marvel, so I threw myself into research and became hooked on the comic books. I highly recommend the Captain Marvel comic series, especially for young girls. She’s a great role model — funny, tough, driven, and a fierce friend.” | 58 |

UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX TO OPEN IN AUGUST By: Tom McMillan
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in August, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink – but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than that.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country focusing specifically on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. “It’s a one-of-a-kind world-class facility right here in the Pittsburgh area, right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. The 185,000-square foot complex will include 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical therapy, occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The Penguins will have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center, in addition to other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. Continued on page 63

The two sheets of ice will be home to the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also will offer public skating and figure skating and will host community events. “Absolutely incredible,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said during a tour of the construction site in the spring. “I don’t think there’s a facility like this in the world, that has the combination of medical treatment, diagnosis, rehab, training, fitness and the ice rinks themselves. And to have it staffed by UPMC physicians, to have Gary Roberts here in terms of athletic training … this is going to be a revolutionary place.” Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, will oversee the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facility’s Sports Performance Center. He also will consult with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. “Gary’s expertise in sports performance training and nutrition is well-known within the hockey community,” Morehouse said, “and his presence here will be a benefit for everyone from youth hockey players to elite NHL prospects. It will help to make this facility a destination point for world-class events and training – in hockey and all sports.” “I love the city and the fans of Pittsburgh,” Roberts said. “The philosophies we’ll use here are ones I honed during my career and afterward. Herr will oversee business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. “The Penguins and UPMC are creating the kind of facility that has not been seen anywhere in the world,” Herr said. “It will be based on the science and principals of athlete development, helping each athlete to reach his or her potential in their sport of choice. We will use age-appropriate training techniques, including off-ice training with Gary Roberts and on-ice components for hockey-specific athletes. My family and I are excited by this opportunity and we’re looking forward to becoming part of the community here.” Dr. Vonda Wright, orthopaedic surgeon at UPMC Sports Medicine, will serve as medical director at the complex.
