Grammy Award winning superstars, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are coming to PPG Paints Arena on Oct. 12, on their Soul2Soul The World Tour 2017. The tour celebrates the 10th anniversary of their record-breaking Soul2Soul II tour which is the highest grossing multi-year country music tour of all time. The new tour also is Hill’s first tour in a decade. In the early shows on the tour schedule, Hill and McGraw introduced new tracks for their upcoming first album of duets — “Break First,” “Telluride,” and their newest single, “Speak to a Girl.” Concerts also included their first duet from the ‘90s, “It’s Your Love.” Steve Moakler will be the featured artist for the tour’s stop in Pittsburgh. Hill followed suit with her own compilation album, Deep Tracks, last November. It charted at No. 22 on the U.S. Country chart. Hill and McGraw also appeared together on NBC’s The Voice last October. They were the first duo to join the show as key advisors to the contestants, preparing the singers for the show’s knockout rounds. He comes across as affable, grounded and feeling what lots of people his age feel. In 2016, Mendes’ duet with Camila Cabello, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” won the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards for Best Pop Video and Fan Fave Video. In 2015, the Fan Fav Award went to Mendes’ “Something Big.” Mendes, who turns 19 in August, just days before his Pittsburgh show, released his newest single, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” in April right before the start of the Illuminate tour. It made its debut at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100. Given its start and reception in the early tour stops, the song seems destined to follow the Hot 100, platinum-achieving ways of Mendes’ earlier singles: o “Stitches,” “Something Big” and “Life of the Party” from Handwritten in 2014 and 2015 o “Mercy” and “Treat You Better” from Illuminate in 2016, and o “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Mendes’ duet with Cabello in 2015 on his reissued album, Handwritten Revisited. Ed Sheeran to Make Second Visit to Pittsburgh By: Pam Thompson

Global superstar Ed Sheeran continues to work the numbers on his North American tour that comes to PPG Paints Arena in September. This is the multiple Grammy winner’s second concert visit to Pittsburgh and his third tour as a headliner. Sheeran has quickly established himself as one of the world’s biggest musical artists and one of the world’s most popular live performers. He has sold more than 22 million albums and 4.7 billion Spotify streams. His shows have sold out some of the biggest venues around the world, including Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., Suncorp Stadium in Sydney, and London’s Wembley Stadium where he played for 240,000 fans over three nights. This tour celebrates Sheeran’s landmark third studio album, ÷. Pronounced “divide” – the album includes the international hits and double lead singles, “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” Both songs made incredible chart entries after their simultaneous release in January. ÷ follows Sheeran’s debut album, +, pronounced “plus,” released in 2011, and his sophomore album, x, pronounced “multiply,” released in 2014. ÷ has fast proven an even greater phenomenon than Sheeran’s four times RIAA platinum certified second album, x. Released March 3, ÷ immediately topped iTunes charts in 96 countries around the world, including the U.S. and the U.K. The new album already is certified platinum or multi-platinum in eight countries. The new album also achieved historic streaming success including the bestever one-day streams for a single artist Sheeran is the first (68,695,172), best one-day streams for an artist to ever have individual album (56,727,861), and best two singles make first-day streams for an individual album simultaneous top 10 (56,727,861). The latter two statistics debuts in the Hot 100 almost double the previous record-holder’s success. chart’s 58-year history. ÷ took over worldwide charts with all 16 of the album’s tracks forming the actual top 16 on Spotify’s Top 50 in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The complete track listing also instantly entered Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart, as well as the Top 50 in 13 international markets including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

“Shape of You,” the album’s first single, earned the best one-day streams for a single track — 10,123,630 streams – besting Sheeran’s own record set earlier this year upon the single’s initial release. Making its debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, “Shape of You” put Sheeran on top of the chart for the first time in his career. The song remained in the top spot for six weeks. “Castle on the Hill” entered the Hot 100 at No. 6, establishing Sheeran as the first artist to ever have two singles make simultaneous top 10 debuts in the chart’s 58-year history. “Shape of You” quickly was certified four times platinum by the RIAA, and “Castle on the Hill” promptly earned platinum — the first two songs released in 2017 to achieve RIAA certifications this year. “Shape of You” made No. 1 at both Contemporary Hit Radio Top 40 and Hot Adult Contemporary radio outlets nationwide while also continuing to rule the top spot on iTunes’ Top Songs chart and Spotify’s Top 50 both globally and in the U.S. It is platinum or multi-platinum in six countries and has diamond status in France and Germany. The song’s official companion video – directed by MTV Video Music Award winner Jason Koenig – is further achieving record-shattering numbers of its own, with individual views exceeding 300 million on Sheeran’s official YouTube alone. “Castle on the Hill” went to No. 2 in eight countries overshadowed only by “Shape of You.” It is at least platinum in six countries and gold in two others. Marking his own 26th birthday on Feb. 17, Sheeran released an unofficial promotional single from ÷ — “How Would You Feel (Paean)”. Sheeran says that the song is a favorite track of his. It has charted in the top 10 in six countries. It has earned gold status in Australia and New Zealand and it is silver in the U.K. The third official single from ÷, “Galway Girl,” was announced in March and released in the U.S. in April. It charted at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 and already has gone double platinum in Australia, and platinum in the U.K., Canada and New Zealand. The British singer/songwriter’s second full length album x earned him critical and commercial success. After debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release, x earned two Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. X was a global sensation reaching No. 1 on album charts in 14 countries and topping 95 iTunes charts across the globe. It already has sold more than 1.7 million copies. Sheeran, tapped to perform at the Billboard Music Awards in May, delivered “Castle on the Hill,” remotely from Santiago, Chile, where thousands at his live concert provided backup vocals. In March, Sheeran performed the dual lead singles from ÷ at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. February was a busy month for Sheeran, who logged a round of high profile appearances in support of his new album. He played “Shape of You” for the 59th annual Grammy Awards, and at the Brit Awards, he sang “Castle on the Hill” and a reworked version of “Shape of You” featuring Stormzy. On NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sheeran traded his guitar for a banana shaker and along with Fallon and the Roots performed “Shape of You” using classroom instruments including kazoos and toy xylophones. He also performed both “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill” on Saturday Night Live. After performing “Shape of You” on Ellen DeGeneres’ show in February, Sheeran returned to her show in April to follow up with “Castle on the Hill.” Sheeran celebrated last fall’s announcement of the tour with a live appearance in New York City’s Rockefeller Center as part of NBC’s Today “Citi Concert Series.” Sheeran had his mainstream breakthrough in 2012 with his debut studio album, +, which made the Top 5 in the U.S. and spent three weeks at No. 1 in the U.K. + earned platinum or multi-platinum status in eight countries and diamond status in Australia. + features “The A Team,” Sheeran’s commercial breakthrough single released in 2011. Roger Waters’ New Tour, Us + Them Scheduled For September Concert By: Pam Thompson

Roger Waters plays PPG Paints Arena in September on his new tour of North America, Us + Them. Described as “pioneering” and “groundbreaking,” the tour features some of Waters’ new songs and solo work as well as his classic Pink Floyd tunes. Us + Them, opened in May and it includes more than 50 shows in the U.S. and Canada through October. The title is derived from the 1974 track “Us and Them.” Waters wrote the lyrics for the song and co-wrote its music with Richard Wright. It was among the tracks on the record setting Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon. Waters, who turns 74 just days before he plays in Pittsburgh, says of the tour, “It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75 percent of it will be old material and 25 percent will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular like all my shows have been.” Promoters say that the new tour will uphold Waters’ reputation for live performances that provide audiences with “immersive sensory experiences” featuring state-of-the-art audio-visual production and sound. Us + Them promises that crowds will be inspired with its powerful delivery taking the audience on a musical journey. Waters’ bandmates for the tour are: o Jon Carin, keyboard and guitar o Drew Erikson, Hammond organ and piano o Dave “Killer” Kilminster, guitar o Holly Laessig, vocals o Ian Ritchie, saxophone o Gus Seyffert, guitar and bass o Joey Waronker, drums o Jonathan Wilson, guitar and vocals, and o Jessica Wolfe, vocals. Prior to the tour launch, Waters conducted the North American Dress Rehearsal Sweepstakes providing the winner with two seats to see the final preparations for the tour. He also tantalized fans with studio footage of the sessions for Is This the Life We Really Want? | 50 |

This year’s tour marks Waters’ first return to the U.S. since “The Wall Live (2010-2013). That sold-out world tour consisting of 219 shows, was seen by more than four million fans globally. It remains the highest grossing tour by any solo artist in history. Continued on page 52

Waters announced that his new studio album, Is This the Life We Really Want?” would be delayed from a May release prior to the start of the tour, to early June. It is his fourth solo studio album and his first in 25 years since Amused to Death in 1992. It follows his operatic work, the album Ça Ira, released in 2005. Waters’ first and second solo studio albums are 1987’s Radio K.A.O.S. and 1984’s The Pros & Cons of Hitch Hiking. The new album’s first single, “Smell the Roses” was released in April. NPR called the song “a rage against complacency and an elegy to the American dream.” NPR along with Rolling Stone and other music media called the track reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar.” Waters wrote “Have a Cigar” back in the 1970s for the album, Wish You Were Here. That album, which is on Rolling Stone’s list, The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, is considered by many to be Pink Floyd’s masterpiece. The second single released was “Déjà Vu” which Waters previewed in a performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May. The third single from the new album, “The Last Refugee” was released in May prior to the start of the tour. Continued on page 54

Perry first performed “Chained to the Rhythm” with Marley at the 59th Grammy Awards in February, and they followed up with performances later that month at the Brit Awards, and then the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March when Perry’s fans, KatyCats were nominated for Best Fan Army. The music video for “Chained to the Rhythm,” featuring Perry in an amusement park named “Oblivia,” also was released in February. A third track from Witness, “Swish Swish” was released May 19, and the very next day, Perry performed it on Saturday Night Live. Perry was SNL’s musical guest on the show’s season finale. She performed “Swish Swish” sans Nicki Minaj who is featured on the studio recording of the song. The backpack kid, Russell Got Barzz joined the act. The perforance juxtaposed the youthful, ordinary-looking teen and his distinctive dance moves with the ostentatiously costumed ensemble including drag queens. Perry performed her second song for the show, “Bon Appétit,” with its featured artists, the hip hop group, Migos. Migos — the three rappers known on stage as Quavo, Takeoff and Offset – received two Billboard Music Award nominations for Top Rap Song and Top Rap Collaboration for their recording, “Bad and Boujee” featuring Lil Uzi Vert. In addition to her two numbers as the musical guest, Perry also made a cameo appearance as herself in the cacophonous Rap Song skit. Also in May, Perry performed at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in England. A pretty, platinum blond version of Perry – who is known for her many varied looks – appeared on the May cover of Vogue. In a decade, she has racked up more than a cumulative 18 billion streams alongside worldwide sales of more than 40 million adjusted albums and more than 125 million tracks. Continued on page 63
