Twain Tour Brings Now to Pittsburgh By: Pam Thompson
Global superstar Shania Twain brings her fourth solo tour in support of her new album, Now, to PPG Paints Arena this summer. The Canadian singer/songwriter last performed in Pittsburgh on her Rock This Country tour in 2015. Early tour reviews commend the set list – a combination of Now’s new music and hits from Twain’s repertoire – and cite the performer’s easy interaction with her audiences, dazzling costumes, trapeze-like swing that carries her above the crowd, visually entertaining production, and “two hours of non-stop” entertainment by the soloist. The Now tour started in Tacoma, Wash., in May and runs through this summer, playing 46 shows throughout the U.S. and Canada. Now, released last September, made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Canadian Albums and Top Country Albums charts. It went to No. 1 in several markets around the world and was recognized by ARIA as the highest selling international album of the year. Twain co-produced every track on the standard and deluxe editions of Now. Previewed at the Stagecoach Festival, “Life’s About to Get Good,” the premier single was released in June 2017. It also was used for a promotional video for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Twain introduced “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed,” the second single from Now, last summer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Continued on page 4

The Smashing Pumpkins Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour To Come for August Concert By: Pam Thompson
The pioneering alternative rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins perform at PPG Paints Arena in August, on its Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour. The Grammy Award-winning group announced in February that it would tour for the first time in nearly 20 years featuring its founding members Billy Corgan, primary songwriter and lead vocalist, Jimmy Chamberlin, drummer, and James Iha, guitarist. Longtime Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder also joins the tour. The band says that it is moving to a three-guitar lineup to better emulate the signature tones and textures of their albums. “Some 30 years ago, as The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha and I began a musical journey in the cramped rear bedroom of my father’s house. And so, it’s magic to me that we’re able to coalesce once more around the incredible Jimmy Chamberlin, to celebrate those songs we’ve made together,” Corgan says. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the band’s formation in Chicago, the tour highlights music from the group’s inception through 2000, featuring music from their first five studio albums. Corgan says, “This show and staging will be unlike any we’ve ever done and will feature a set unlike any we’ve ever played. For if this is a chance at a new beginning, we plan on ushering it in with a real bang.” The Smashing Pumpkins has sold more than 30 million albums. In 1996, “Tonight, Tonight” won seven MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year, Breakthrough Video and Viewers Choice, as well as awards for the best in direction, visual effects, art direction, and cinematography. Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour To Say Goodbye to Fans in Steel City By: Pam Thompson
The legendary Paul Simon, songwriter, recording artist and performer, bids adieu to fans in Pittsburgh when Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour plays PPG Paints Arena on Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. The Steel City performance follows Simon’s show in Newark, N.J., his birthplace, and it is his last tour stop before the final three concerts in New York City. Simon and his band embarked on the artist’s goodbye tour in mid-May, trekking through the U.S. and Canada for 21 shows before heading to Europe for 10 concerts in July. Simon and his band return to the U.S. in September for the 11 U.S. appearances on the final leg of the tour. On opening night in Vancouver, BC, Simon’s show consisted of 25 songs, including three encores of hits from his solo career and his days in Simon & Garfunkel. According to Simon, the Homeward Bound tour is a fitting culmination of a performing career that began in the early 1960s and has coincided with his artistic journey as a songwriter and recording artist until the present day. While Simon has declined interviews, he issued the following statement along with the announcement of his farewell tour in February, giving insight into his decision to stop touring, as well as his plans for the future: “I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I’d consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief. Continued on page 54

“I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly. “Sadly, we lost our lead guitarist and my friend of 30 years, Vincent N’guini, who died last December. His loss is not the only reason I’ve decided to stop touring, but it is a contributing factor. Mostly, though, I feel the travel and time away from my wife and family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing. I’d like to leave with a big Thank You to the many folks around the world who’ve come out to watch me play over the last 50 years. “After this coming tour, I anticipate doing the occasional performance in a (hopefully) acoustically pristine hall, and to donate those earnings to various philanthropic organizations, particularly those whose objective is to save the planet, ecologically.
