FLEETWOOD MAC FANS CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT OCTOBER ON WITH THE SHOW CONCERT By: Pam Thompson

Don’t stop, thinking about tomorrow, Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here, It’ll be, better than before, Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone. Why not think about times to come, And not about the things that you’ve done, If your life was bad to you, Just think what tomorrow will do. “Don’t Stop” by Christine McVie

Fleetwood Mac fans – especially those who favor Christine McVie’s “You Make Loving Fun,” “Songbird” and “Don’t Stop” among their favorite tunes – will be thinking “about times to come” and especially the On With The Show Tour which opens this fall. Chances are that the members of Fleetwood Mac also will be turning over the meaning of the lyrics of their hit, “Don’t Stop.” It will be the first time in 16 years that McVie, the vocalist/songwriter, rejoins her Fleetwood Mac band mates – cofounders, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks – for a concert tour. The band has been making arena appearances in Pittsburgh since October 1975. Continued from page 3

The multi Grammy-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees bring On With The Show to CONSOL Energy Center on Oct. 14, as part of a 40-show, 33-city North American tour that kicks off Sept. 30. Fleetwood Mac’s first show in CONSOL Energy Center was the Fleetwood Mac Live Tour last April, featuring four of the five band members from 1975. The band, with more than 3.9 million Facebook likes, has been making arena appearances in Pittsburgh since October 1975, when the Fleetwood Mac Tour — with the group’s new members, Buckingham and Nicks — came to the Civic Arena. Fleetwood Mac returned in November 1979 with its Tusk Tour, in October 1977 with the Shake the Cage Tour, November 1990 with the Behind the Mask Tour, May 2003 with the Say You Will Tour, and March 2009 with the Unleashed Tour. Nicks, co-headlining the Heart & Soul Tour with Rod Stewart was the first member of Fleetwood Mac to appear at CONSOL Energy Center in July of 2012. This year began in big ways for Fleetwood Mac. McVie’s return to the band was announced in an interview with Carson Daly in Los Angeles on NBC’s TODAY in January. Regarding her return, McVie said, “It was so comfortable being back on stage with them as if no time had passed, and then we all started talking and it feels like the time is right. I’m really happy.” Continued on page 6

She was referring to last September at London’s O2 Arena, when she joined John McVie, Nicks, Fleetwood and Buckingham on stage for “Don’t Stop.” Her surprise appearance and the reunion number received a tremendous response from the audience. It was, perhaps, the impetus reuniting the 1975 edition of Fleetwood Mac. In a joint statement, her colleagues commented, “As far as we’re concerned, she’s never really left. We are overjoyed to have Christine back on stage with us.” Buckingham was part of a super group performing for the close of the Grammy Awards ceremony in early February. In the week leading up to those presentations, Rumours re-entered the Billboard 200. It snuggled in at 200 on the chart – 36 years after winning Album of the Year at the 20th annual Grammy Awards in 1978, and 11 years after being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In February, Fleetwood Mac was chosen by Ultimate Classic Rock readers for two awards – Best Reissue or Archived Release and Best Rock Music Commercial. The first award was for the deluxe edition of its 2013 reissue of Rumours four-CD collection. It includes cuts from demos and live performances, a vinyl version of the album, and a DVD of the “Rosebud Film” documentary on the record’s creation which has long been out of print. In this category, Fleetwood Mac topped the likes of The Who, Nirvana, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The Ultimate Classic Rock Award for Best Rock Music Commercial recognizes the 2013 Budweiser Super Bowl commercial which used “Landslide” in an ad telling the story of a young Clydesdale’s reunion with his trainer. The commercial successfully competed against entries featuring the music of Led Zeppelin, Queen, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Meatloaf and others. In April, Nicks was the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. McVie, 70, was honored for lifetime achievement at the 2014 Ivor Novello songwriting awards this spring. Also among the most popular songs that she has written and performed are “Little Lies,” “Think About Me,” “Say You Love Me,” “Over My Head,” “Hold Me,” and “Think About Me.” The band members – with the re-addition of McVie — have been working on a new album which is to debut in 2015. Summer rehearsals for On With The Show are scheduled. Continued on page 9

It is anticipated that with McVie’s return, On With The Show will focus on the group’s greatest hits, while the songs due out next year will be saved for another round of concerts. Fleetwood Mac will appear on Today’s concert series on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center on Oct. 9, just days before they perform in Pittsburgh. 2013 was a pivotal and milestone year for Fleetwood Mac and the band’s fans: o Touring for the first time since the Unleashed Tour in 2009, Fleetwood Mac Live 2013 included a special appearance at the historic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. o A new deluxe reissue of Rumours with previously unreleased studio and live tracks was released. o The tour marked the 35th anniversary of the release of their classic Rumours album. It is one of the most successful albums in recorded history with sales exceeding 40 million copies. It topped the pop charts for more than 31 weeks and had four top ten singles. o Last April, the group issued “Extended Play,” its first collection of new work in a decade. Say You Will, in 2003, had been its last studio album. o John McVie, the “Mac” in Fleetwood Mac and Christine’s former husband, was diagnosed with cancer last October, resulting in the cancellation of performances in Australia and New Zealand while he received treatment. o McVie returned for Fleetwood Mac’s year-end show in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and a private New Year’s Eve concert. Reportedly, his treatments are going well and he is planning to participate in On With The Show. In 47 years, Fleetwood Mac has produced 17 studio albums, 8 live albums, 23 compilation albums, an extended play single, and 76 singles. The band formed in 1967 as a quartet with Fleetwood and John McVie, Peter Green and guitarist Jeremy Spencer, and they played the blues. Continued on page 11

The group has been producing music since its first blues albums in 1968, Fleetwood Mac, which is now known as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and Mr. Wonderful. Guitarist Danny Kirwan, 18 at the time, joined Fleetwood Mac in 1968 and is recognized for moving the band closer to rock from its blues roots. Then Play On, in 1969, was the last album of the Peter Green era of Fleetwood Mach. It charted at No. 109 in the U.S. and No. 6 in the U.K. Green left Fleetwood Mac in 1970 and McVie’s wife, Christine, joined the band on keyboards and vocals. She already had been a guest on Kiln House that year and had painted that album cover. When Spencer left the group suddenly in 1971, Bob Welch subsequently signed on. He was the first American member of Fleetwood Mac and contributed guitar, vocals and song writing. Future Games was released in 1971 and Bare Trees followed a year later. Kirwan departed in 1972 after his relationships with the other band members deteriorated. The albums, Penguin and Mystery to Me, were both released in 1973. In 1974, Heroes Are Hard to Find was released and charted at No. 34, becoming the group’s highest charting album to date. It also was the last of five albums featuring Welch. In 1975, the talents of the McVies and Fleetwood from the U.K. intersected with those of newcomers, Buckingham and Nicks from the States. This combination is recognized for evolving the group’s music. Fleetwood had heard Buckingham and Nicks on tape and had them join the band without a formal audition. The group known for its solid rhythm section combined with Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie who all commanded strong vocal and songwriting talents. The second album entitled Fleetwood Mac often is referred to as The White Album. It was released in 1975. More than a year later, it hit No. 1, setting a record for the longest time between an album’s release and its arrival at the top of the chart. Three singles from the album put Fleetwood Mac in the U.S. Top 40 for the first time. “Over My Head,” was the group’s first Top 40 single in the U.S. Also on the album were the favorites, “Rhiannon,” “Say You Love Me,” and “Monday Morning.” Continued on page 12

Rumours, released in 1977, is one of the 10 best-selling albums in music history. It yielded four Top 10 hits: “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams.” “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun.” The album topped the Billboard album chart for 31 weeks and charted in the in the U.S. for a total of 134 weeks and in the U.K. for 443 weeks. It won Album of the Year at the 20th annual Grammy Awards. The success of Rumours was followed by Tusk, a double album released in 1979. Its title track featuring the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band climbed to No. 8, and Nicks’ song, “Sara” reached No. 7. Mirage, in 1982 was the third No. 1 album after Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac. Five of its tracks were released as singles – “Hold Me,” “Gypsy.” “Love in Store,” “Oh Diane” and “Can’t Go Back.” The final studio album with Fleetwood, the McVies, Nicks and Buckingham was Tango in the Night, released in 1987. It charted at No. 7 and included four Top 40 singles – “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders,” “Everywhere” and “Little Lies.” In 1990, Buckingham was replaced with Rick Vito and Billy Burnette on Behind the Mask, which reached No. 33 in the U.S. and No. 1 in the U.K. In 1993, the Rumours quintet reunited at the behest of incoming President of the United States, Bill Clinton to perform one song at his inaugural ball – “Don’t Stop” – which had been the theme song of the Clinton campaign. Nicks left the band after this one-time/one-song performance. In 1997, Fleetwood Mac launched a 37-city reunion tour following the release of another No. 1 album, The Dance. The Dance Tour continued into 1998 and it was the last time that Christine McVie toured with Fleetwood Mac 1998 also was the year that Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 13th annual induction dinner. Sheryl Crow was their presenter. Members of the band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 include Green, Kirwan and Spencer, in addition to Fleetwood, the McVies, Buckingham and Nicks. | 12 |

ERIC CHURCH RETURNS TO PITTSBURGH IN OCTOBER WITH OUTSIDERS TOUR By: Pam Thompson

Multi-platinum country music superstar Eric Church comes to CONSOL Energy Center on October 11 with “The Outsiders World Tour” of North America. The new tour supports Church’s current album, The Outsiders, which made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and the Billboard Country Albums Chart earlier this year. “I really see this album as a game-changer for us,” Church says of The Outsiders. It is his fourth album and follows his platinum breakthrough Chief. “It’s outsiders, plural, because it’s not just about me,” Church points out. “If you look at the cover art, it’s me and my band. And in the video, we’re coming through the gates, and the fans are coming through behind us. Those people that have always been a part of this journey, and this is where we all get to stand up and say, ‘We’re here now. You could close the doors on us and brush us off before, but now we’re coming through.’” Coming through with Church will be special tour guest Dwight Yoakam, and openers, Brothers Osborne. The rising country music duo is one of three acts alternately opening for Church on The Outsiders World Tour. Continued on page 24

“I want people to understand that we’re here and that we will be reckoned with.”

“I want people to understand that we’re here and that we will be reckoned with,” Church says. The performer already is recognized as a restless creative force blazing an unconventional path to country superstardom. He has written or co-written most of the music on the album, which is being cited for challenging the accepted rules of contemporary country music. “It was time for us to up our game,” Church says, adding, “This record is what we’ve been trying to do all along. We’ve gotten close before, but this is the first one where we’ve really been able to just go for it and take it to the next level. We went into this with the feeling of ‘You haven’t really seen what we’re capable of yet; now we can really do some stuff.’” “It feels like this record is the moment It’s an interesting that our whole journey has been leading time in country up to,” Church says. “It really feels like all the time we spent fighting our asses off music. to get here was for this record. Everyone thought Chief was the record where we got serious, but that was just scratching the surface, and we were still coloring inside the lines to some degree. This time, there were no rules. There wasn’t one time during the making of this record where I or Jay (Joyce, producer) or anyone else said ‘We can’t do that, that’s too weird.’ We looked at it like, ‘How can we make this song cool, how can we push it to become what it needs to be?’” “You get to a point where you feel a little bulletproof,” the performer continues. “I got to a point where I just didn’t care about what everybody thinks, and it was just, ‘OK, now we’re gonna go have some fun.’ And our career is in a good enough spot where if we make a fantastic record and everybody hates it and says we’ve lost our minds, well, that’s kind of cool too.” With all of his success, Church says, “I’ve always felt like an outsider, and I still feel that way. That feeling is something that you never lose, no matter how much acceptance you get. When you’ve been burned enough, you carry that feeling with you, and it becomes a part of you. That chip on your shoulder becomes a source of strength, and it drives you to push forward.” “It’s an interesting time in country music—maybe in all music—because everything’s up in the air and all the genre barriers are breaking down,” Church says. “With satellite radio, social media and the way people consume music now, people have access to every kind of music, and you just don’t run into people now who only listen to one kind of music. People are smart enough to discern what’s good, and if the music makes them feel something, then they’ll respond.” “We’re still gonna fit in the country genre, and that’s fine, but it’s crazy that people try to put all these constraints on music,” Church concludes. “Music is universal; it breaks down language barriers and cultural barriers, and it speaks to people’s souls on the deepest level. It’s all just music, and The Outsiders is a Continued on page 27

stake in the ground, saying ‘This is where we are now….’ If it works, all bets are off. And that’s gonna be fun.” Church is hailed as a top entertainer by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN Magazine, and others. Ken Tucker of NPR Music in his review of The Outsiders, says, “Eric Church is working on a level that few other country artists of his generation can touch.” Tucker continues, “Shrewd, defiant, sly and funny, Eric Church has succeeded in what he set out to do: He’s using the power he’s accrued from making hit records to make exactly the kind of album he wants, heedless of industry approval. And this is how good he is: Now he’ll go out and — through the singles he’ll release, the touring he’ll do and the videos he’ll make — probably turn this personal project into a big commercial deal. The Outsiders deserves nothing less.” Michael Robbins in his review for Spin writes, “… this is the kind of record critics imagine Kanye keeps making: a freakish statement of confidence and power from an artist in full command of his gifts.” “Nashville has the deepest grab-bag in contemporary pop right now, but nothing else comes together like Eric Church in the wild,” Robbins says. Dan Hyman writes about The Outsiders in Esquire saying, “It’s buck-wild, over-the-top, loud, distorted…and decidedly fearless. It’s a gem…. It’s the sort Continued on page 29

of take-no-prisoners rock-centered country album that’s doing exactly what Nashville’s Music Row elite, with their risk-averse, trend-following predilections growing ever more predictable by the day, never could have anticipated: packing stadiums and making massive dollars.” The Outsiders includes 12 songs: o “The Outsiders” o “A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young” o “Cold One” o “Roller Coaster Ride” o “Talladega” o “Broke Record” o “Like a Wrecking Ball” o “That’s Damn Rock & Roll” o “Dark Side” o “Devil, Devil (Prelude: Princess of Darkness)” o “Give Me Back My Hometown” o “The Joint” Church first played CONSOL Energy Center nearly two years ago. The Blood, Sweat & Beers Tour – which Pollstar named a Top Tour of 2012 — used a series of backdrops as the focus of the show. The Outsiders World Tour will use a more high tech design and will offer fans a 360° view of the entertainer and his band. The best seats on The Outsiders World Tour will be paperless tickets so fans get them instead of scalpers, according to information on Church’s website. A limited number of VIP tickets will be available for the concert. Each VIP ticket includes a premium ticket in the first 15 rows or in the general admission pit, an invitation to a pre-show party at The Outsiders Joint, a two-song acoustic pre-show performance by Church, a limited edition show poster, and a dedicated VIP concert concierge. Three weeks before his Pittsburgh show, Church will tape his debut performance for “Austin City Limits” on Sept. 23, as part of the groundbreaking music program’s 40th anniversary season. The television show, taped live before an audience at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin, Texas, will air nationally on PBS Television on a date to be announced. Church’s summer plans include his Church Choir 2014 Meet & Drink in Nashville, headlining about a half dozen music festivals, and playing for George Strait’s sold out farewell show. The Outsiders is the follow-up to Church’s platinum-certified album Chief, which was named the 2012 Album of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, and GRAMMY-nominated for Best Country Album. Five Top 20 singles resulted from Chief: o “Homeboy,” certified platinum for sales in excess of one million singles; o the Top 10 “Like Jesus Does” and the Top 5 “Creepin’”, which both are certified gold for sales in excess of 500,000 singles each; o two No. 1 hits “Drink in My Hand,” certified platinum, and “Springsteen,” certified double platinum for sales in excess of two million singles. Church’s debut album, Sinners Like Me (2006) and his second album Carolina (2009) are both gold certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. Carolina had three hit singles: the Top 10 “Hell on the Heart” as well as the Top 20 hit “Smoke A Little Smoke” and the Top 10 “Love Your Love The Most,” which were both certified gold. Sinners Like Me spawned three Top 20 singles: “How ‘Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines,” and “Guys Like Me.” Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, placing him in an elite group of global superstars. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted, with 14 peaking in the Top 10, including the hits “Honky Tonk Man,” “Please, Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” and “Fast as You.” He is a 21-time nominated, 2-time GRAMMY Award winner. In celebration of his latest critically acclaimed album, 3 Pears, he received the Artist of the Year award at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony, the most prestigious award offered by the organization. This year, Yoakam will appear as a recurring guest star in multiple episodes of the CBS series, “Under the Dome,” based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel of the same name. Growing up in Deale, Maryland, their close-knit-family of seven spent most nights not in front of the television, but writing and playing songs. In April 2011, Warner Chappell/King Pen Music offered them a publishing deal. A year later, Capitol Records offered them a record deal. Their current single is “Rum.” For more information, visit www.brothersosborne.com. | 30 |

DINOSAURS ROAM PITTSBURGH IN SUMMER ARENA SPECTACULAR By: Pam Thompson

Dinosaurs roam Pittsburgh this summer when WALKING WITH DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, comes to CONSOL Energy Center for a limited eightperformance engagement. The production is touring for the second time and its director, Scott Faris who has been with the show since its inception, says that there are two aspects of the production that continue to amaze him – the dinosaurs and the audience reaction. “In 2006, when I joined the show,” says Faris, “I met my first dinosaur inside a industrial warehouse with only florescent lighting and skylights and even in that very non-theatrical setting, the dino looked astonishingly alive. I was hooked from that moment on.” The updated production showcases changes to the dinosaurs based on the latest scientific research including the likely feathering of some species. Twenty dinosaurs represent 10 species from the 200-million-year reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the Cretaceous period. “Our dinosaurs move exactly like they are real — the realism is mind-blowing!”

The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail. It took a year for a team of 50 – including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists and painters, and animatronic experts – to build the production. The dinosaurs were created in painstaking detail, says Faris adding, “They appear lifelike, even when they’re not moving.” “I’m also amazed by the audience reaction, no matter where we go in the world. Parents and children are equally awestruck whether it’s Prague, Portugal or Pittsburgh.” Worldwide, more than eight million people have seen this show in 243 cities and more than 2,000 performances. “They are swept back in time and immersed in a world full of amazing sights, sounds, colors, music and all kinds of dinosaurs. There’s no other show like it that I know of.” Faris says. He describes two common audience reactions, “…mouths wide open in disbelief that what they’re seeing isn’t going to come off the stage and walk down the street. Or huge smiles as they stare at the creatures.” Continued on page 39

There are many parts of the show that always get a big audience reaction, according to the director. “A couple of my favorites would have to be when the Mama and Baby Brachiosaur nuzzle each other and you hear the entire audience go ‘awww’ at the same time. Another is when Mama T-Rex strides right down center stage, looks and the audience and then lets out a gigantic roar. It’s very cool to hear 8,000 people shriek with delight.” Faris directed Michael Crawford in EFX at MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, which at the time was the biggest stage production ever conceived, and he was on the production team that created Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage Hotel. He directed Chicago the Musical in 16 countries around the world in over a dozen languages and William Shatner’s one-man Broadway show Shatner’s World. His credentials include resident director on the Broadway productions of Les Misérables, Cabaret, Cats, and Grease and a directing consultant for Cirque du Soleil. He directed Bette Midler in The Showgirl Must Go On at Caesars Palace Las Vegas and George Lucas Super Live Adventure in Japan. Commenting on the components that blend to make the show “spectacular,” Faris says, “Obviously the scale and detail of the dinosaurs, but the audience also gets to listen to a beautiful cinematic score. They learn more than most of them ever knew about dinosaurs, and they leave with a feeling that they have experienced a once-in-alifetime event. The scenery, lighting and sound effects all combine to create the magical world they enter.” It has been eight years since Faris joined as the director of the production which first toured in 2007. “I came on board in the summer of 2006, when dinosaurs were being built in a shop in Melbourne, Australia but the exact content of the show had not been decided upon. My job was to come in and help sort that out,” Faris says.

“Parents and children are equally awestruck.”

Explaining his role as director of the spectacular, Faris says, “I’m responsible for coordinating all of the different aspects of the production within the various departments: the script, music, lighting, sound, scenic, the actors and in this case, telling the dinosaurs what to do. Ultimately, I have the last word on what the audience sees but I only do this with a lot of collaboration with the other members of the creative team.” As artistic director, the late William May developed the creative vision of the show based on an original idea by entrepreneur Bruce Mactaggart to create an arena version of the Walking with Dinosaurs television series. The BBC series that inspired WALKING WITH Everyone is DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR won six smiling when Emmy and three BAFTA awards and was seen by a worldwide audience of 700 million. they leave Tim Haines, creator and producer of the original BBC series, serves as project consultant to the arena. the arena show. Sonny Tilders originally designed and built the 20 dinosaurs. He is the head of creature design at Creature Technology Company. His workshop was big enough to park a 747 or an adult Brachiosaurus that is 35 feet tall and 56 feet long. Tilders, a major creative force of the high-tech world of animatronic puppetry for film and television, also designed the Global Creatures/ Dreamworks production How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular. He created the lead character in the Australian stage production of King Kong. Tilders also was one of the lead animatronic engineers for Jim Henson’s Creature workshop on the Farscape series, followed by work on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Peter Pan, Ghost Rider and The Chronicles of Narnia. Tilders says, “Many of the technologies we are using on WALKING WITH DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR are borrowed from film. The computer software and hardware we have developed is based on the systems used to control animatronic creatures in feature films.” “To make it appear that these creatures are flesh and blood weighing six, eight or even 20 tons, we use a system called ‘muscle bags,’ made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls, stretched across moving points on the body. These contract and stretch in the same manner that muscle, fat, and skin does on real creatures.” “The puppeteers use ‘voodoo rigs’ to make many of the dinosaurs move. They are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same joints and range of movement as their life-sized counterparts. The puppeteer manipulates the voodoo rig and these actions are interpreted by computer and transmitted by radio waves to make the hydraulic cylinders in the actual dinosaur replicate the action, with a driver hidden below the animal, helping to maneuver it around Continued on page 42

the arena.” Suited puppeteer specialists, who are inside the creatures, operate five of the smaller dinosaurs. Peter England designed the set and projected image. John Rayment designed the show’s lighting. James Brett composed the score, and Warner Brown wrote the script. The history of the world plays out in the arena show with the splitting of the earth’s continents, and the transition from the arid desert of the Triassic period to the lush green prairies and forces of the later Jurassic. Oceans form, volcanoes erupt, a forest catches fire — all leading to the impact of the massive comet, which struck the earth, and forced the extinction of the dinosaurs. The show originated in Australia, where after years of planning, WALKING WITH DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR came to life at Sydney’s Acer Arena in January 2007. During its North American tour (2007-2010), the production won the THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Touring Event, the Billboard Touring Award for Creative Content, the Pollstar Concert Industry Award for Most Creative Stage Production, and the ILMC Arthur Award for Best in Show. The THEAs recognize excellence in the creation of compelling educational, historical, and entertainment projects; and both the Billboard Touring Award and the Pollstar Concert Industry Award recognize a show or tour that creatively expands what is offered on the road. The ILMC (International Live Music Conference) Arthur Award for Best in Show recognizes theatre shows and family entertainment. Faris says, “We take the audience on a journey back in time and show them how the dinosaurs might have actually looked in their prime — huge, sometimes frightening, sometimes comical monsters — that fought for survival every day of their lives. Our dinosaurs move exactly like they are real — with all the roars, snorts and excitement that go with it. U.S. ELITE GYMNASTS TALK ABOUT HOW THEY STARTED By: Pam Thompson

Elite gymnasts flocking to Pittsburgh this summer to vie for the country’s top honors at the P & G Gymnastics Championships, have spent most of their lives preparing for these games. Some of them followed family members into the sport. Others were attracted to gymnastics’ artistry and athleticism, and some got their starts because the activity seemed like a good use of all their extra energy. o Nastia Liukin, 2005 and 2006 National Champion and 2008’s All-Around Olympic gold medalist, followed her parents, who were both gymnasts, into the sport. Her dad has four Olympic gymnastics medals of his own. o Carly Patterson, 2004’s U.S. National Co-Champion and AllAround Olympic gold medalist, was introduced to gymnastics at her cousin’s birthday party. o Shawn Johnson, 2008’s National All-Around Champion and All-Around Olympic silver medalist, says that she “did a lot of climbing, jumping and was packed with energy” as a threeyear-old. Members of the 2014 U.S. Team share similar stories to those of Liukin, Patterson and Johnson. Like Liukin, Sam Mikulak, 2013 U.S. men’s all-around champion, says, “My parents were gymnasts so from the time I could walk, they were teaching me skills.” He took his first class at the age of 2. Simone Biles, 2013 World and U.S. women’s all-around champion, had an introduction to gymnastics similar to Patterson’s. Continued on page 48

| 47 |

Continued from page 47

“I went to Bannon’s on a day care field trip. While there I imitated the other gymnasts,” Biles says. The coach saw her potential and sent home a letter inviting her to take classes. Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney are current members of the women’s U.S. National Gymnastics Team and both of them were members of the “Fierce Five” that took the 2012 Olympic team title in London. Ross says, “My mom put me in gymnastics when I was 3 years old because I had so much energy and was extremely active.” Maroney says, “My mom put me in gymnastics because I had so much energy and I was always running around, so she thought gymnastics might take away some of the insane amounts of energy.” Jonathan Horton, a member of the men’s U.S. National Team, similarly entered the sport because he had so much energy as a tyke. “I was a wild child,” Horton says. “I once climbed a pole in the middle of Target all the way to the ceiling. I used to do back flips on my parents’ bed and I rode a garage door to the top when I was 3 years old.” Other members of the U.S. National Team also got into gymnastics after attempting stunts at home: o Joshua Dixon: “Both of my older sisters were involved with the sport and I couldn’t resist the urge to try some stuff in the backyard.” o Marvin Kimble: “My mom enrolled me after seeing me try to do a back flip.” o Akash Modi: “My parents did not want me jumping on the furniture so they put me in gymnastics.” o John Orozco: “I was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and my father realized I could do more because I was strong as a young child. He would see me doing flips and splits and decided to introduce me to the sport.” o Donnell Whittenburg: “I began gymnastics because I was teaching myself skills and doing ‘back yard gymnastics’ and my mom didn’t want me to hurt myself.” o Madison Kocian: “My mom put me in gymnastics because I would climb on everything.” o Lexie Priessman: “My mom put me in gymnastics because my sister and I really wanted to do it. When we were watching my older sister we would run on the floor and flip around.” Priessman adds, “My favorite thing about gymnastics is my teammates, coach and flipping around.” | 48 |

The Black Keys appeared at CONSOL Energy Center for the first time in the spring of last year on the final leg of The El Camino Tour, which was their first string of concerts in arena venues. This summer, The Black Keys are appearing at music festivals across Europe in Switzerland, France, Germany, the U.K., Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium. At the 2013 Grammy Awards, The Black Keys nearly swept the rock field claiming the prizes: o Best Rock Performance for “Lonely Boy” o Best Rock Song, “Lonely Boy” o Best Rock Album for El Camino In addition, Auerbach won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, NonClassical, tallying four Grammys and more awards than any other honoree. The Black Keys – who hail from Akron, Ohio – met in high school and began playing music together in Carney’s basement. They formed in 2001 as an independent group after Carney, the drummer, and Auerbach, the singer and guitarist, dropped out of college. In 2002, they released their first album, “The Big Come Up,” which was recorded in their rehearsal space — Carney’s cellar. Finding their fame, Auerbach and Carney are now installed in the Alumni Hall of Fame at Harvey S. Firestone High School in Akron. Keeping a presence in the town where it started for them, The Black Keys currently carry a West Akron Baseball League/The Black Keys t-shirt in their web store at www.theblackkeys.com. All profits from the sale of the jersey designed by Michael Carney, Patrick’s brother, benefit the WABL. Michael traveled via mini-van with his brother and Auerbach in the early days when they were playing small clubs. He also designed the Brothers recording package which won a Grammy, and he is credited for the Turn Blue artwork. Brothers, the group’s first commercial success came in 2010. The album and its single “Tighten Up” together won three Grammys for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Tighten Up,” Best Alternative Music Album for Brothers, and the Best Recording Package for Brothers. “Tighten Up” also was nominated for Best Rock Song. LOCAL CHURCHES, BGEA PLAN THREE RIVERS FESTIVAL OF HOPE By: Pam Thompson

The Three Rivers Festival of Hope – a first time event for Pittsburgh – takes place this summer at CONSOL Energy Center with Franklin Graham of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) and a line-up of performers including the Charlie Daniels Band, Lecrae, Lacey Strum and more. The festival — a free event — is a collaboration of BGEA and local churches that invited the organization to present the event in Pittsburgh. Explaining the goal of the festival, Graham, The BGEA doesn’t take son of Billy Graham and anything out of the president and CEO of local community – BGEA, says, “Our hope is that people will come and we want to invest in it. hear the good news – that God loves each and every one of us, he cares for us and he wants us to be with him for eternity. If anyone is asking questions about the purpose of their life – this event is for them.” Continued on page 62

We are excited to create an event for everyone in the community.

“There is a point in all of our lives where we wonder: “Why am I here? Does my life matter? Is there a God and does he love me?” We want to share good news and the love of Jesus Christ with everyone. I want the people of Pittsburgh to know that they are loved and that God loves them. We want to invite everyone in the area to this event — all are welcome,” he adds. Graham notes, “Everywhere we go is based on an invitation from local pastors and church leaders in the local community. These are pastors and churches that care deeply about Pittsburgh and they want to see their community changed for the better. We are honored to have been invited and to be able to be here in this great city.” Explaining the part that local churches play in the festival, Graham says, “…they are partnering with us to organize it and they will be the ones continuing the work and the ministry that this event will begin in the community. The benefit is for the entire community – through all the churches and the local volunteers that want to see lives changed in their city.” He notes, “The BGEA doesn’t take anything out of the local community – we want to invest in it.” Stressing that the entire community is invited, Graham says that it is difficult to say how many will come to the festival. Participating will be 474 churches, 57 denominations/ organizations and some 2,000 volunteers. “It’s a fun event with amazing music and there is a little bit of something for everyone. This city has invited us to come and we are excited to create an event for everyone in the community. We want everyone to feel welcome,” he says. “My father, Billy Graham, started doing what they called ‘crusades’ in the ‘40s. But we have been holding these festivals since 1989. We share the same message of hope – the message has never changed – but the festivals look a little different now than they did in the ‘40s and ‘50s, as you can imagine,” Graham says.

Our hope is that people will come and hear the good news.

There will be a lot of music and a message of hope can change each and every one of us. Continued from page 62

“Each night will be a little bit different. There will be a lot of music and I will speak very briefly about a message of hope that can change each and every one of us,” he adds. “We have our friends performing Lecrae and Lacey Strum – who is one of your own local artists. Both Lecrae and Lacey were on ‘My Hope’ video with my father and have amazing stories. We will also have Tenth Avenue North, Kari Jobe, The City Harmonic, We As Humans, Grammywinner Michael W. Smith and the Charlie Daniels Band. Each night, Dennis Agajanian and the Tommy Coomes Band will also perform. There are lots of artists and each one brings something different to the festival,” Graham says. “My father has held events here in the past, and I’ve been to your wonderful city many times, but this will be our first festival here,” Graham says.

The festival — a free event — is a collaboration of BGEA and local churches.

WEDDING CLICKERS SUMMER BRIDAL SHOW TO FEATURE ‘SAY YES TO THE DRESS’ EXPERT, RANDY FENOLI By: Pam Thompson

Weddingclickers.com presents its Summer Bridal Show at CONSOL Energy Center and Randy Fenoli of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Randy to the Rescue,” will be on hand to share his expertise and insights on finding the perfect wedding dress. It will be the 102nd bridal show produced by Dottie and Bob Miller, owners of Wedding Clickers since 2002, and their fourth show at CONSOL Energy Center since the arena opened in 2010. Producing 11 bridal shows annually, their events at CONSOL Energy Center are the largest bridal shows in the Pittsburgh area. Dottie says, “We look for unique venues that will be attractive for the brides, grooms and guests to enjoy the whole experience of the wedding planning.” Bob says, “We bring the best of what Pittsburgh and the surrounding area have to offer our guests. Over 150 participating vendors will be at the show.” The fashion show and Pop Up Bridal Boutiques — where brides can try on dresses — take place on the arena floor. Dottie says that even though there will be no ice, many guests enjoy the opportunity to stand where the Penguins play hockey. Continued on page 67

Some brides attend multiple shows as they are looking for different wedding professionals’ services, and sometimes that takes several shows to get the job done, Bob says. “This is the best way for brides and grooms to look for services for their wedding, as they have the opportunity to meet the vendor in person, learn about the personal service

Fenoli tells brides-to-be,

“Try to keep it all in perspective and keep in mind why you are getting married.”

that vendor offers and all details that you just can’t get from the Internet. Face-to-face interaction is the best form of communication for the bride to truly understand what she is contracting for her wedding day.” “ Fenoli says that his presentation aims to motivate, inspire and entertain, while providing information that brides will need, including “Randy’s Rules.” “Follow your story,” Fenoli stresses to brides. “The gown should make a statement that represents who you are, and the wedding should be personal to the couple. Every bride wants her wedding to be unique, so if she follows the story of her and her fiancé the wedding will be unique, because no two-love stories are alike.” Fenoli tells brides-to-be, “Try to keep it all in perspective and keep in mind why you are getting married. It’s a celebration of the love two people share. It shouldn’t be stressful, turn you into a bridezillla, or put you in debt. It’s about tradition and it’s about your family and friends. Whether you’re a traditional couple, second-time bride, a blended family or a gay couple, they all represent a celebration of love, family and traditions.” Continued on page 68

Fenoli sees some trends in brides’ preferences for their wedding dresses: “I would say that as a general observation, East Coast and big city brides tend to be more fashion forward, the Midwest and Southern brides tend to opt for more traditional styles, brides that live near the beach, or near nature, tend to wear more bohemian styles, or less structured dresses.” He adds, “I think as a whole, brides today are more mature and confident because of the access and exposure to fashion and the world. Brides that are getting married are choosing gowns for a woman not a young girl.” What is it about the dress that makes it so important to a wedding ceremony? Fenoli says, “I feel the dress sets the tone for the rest of the wedding and makes a statement about whom the bride is. It can tell her guests that she’s a princess, traditional, bohemian, a trendsetter, or a sexy woman. A wedding day is a day when most women will have the most photographs taken of them, and they will be in the spotlight, so every bride wants to look her best!” For those attending the event, the Millers offer these tips: o Wear comfortable clothing and shoes to feel relaxed. o Print labels with name, address, phone, email and wedding date to make it easier to enter contests and give information to vendors. o Ask questions and discuss plans to find the most suitable services. o Take time to enjoy the day. The show is a great opportunity to meet many vendors and see new ideas and trends. | 68 |

MILEY CYRUS’ BANGERZ TOUR ADDS PITTSBURGH CONCERT By: Pam Thompson

Subtle, refined and wholesome are not descriptions of Miley Cyrus’ BANGERZ TOUR which comes through Pittsburgh this summer. Controversial, unrestrained and edgy are more apt adjectives for the all-grown-up former Disney performer who has reinvented herself and taken to the concert trail in support of her fourth studio album, Bangerz. The album made its debut at No. 1 last fall on both the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and the Digital Album chart with more than 270,000 albums sold in its first week. Following the European BANGERZ TOUR, CONSOL Energy Center will be the third stop for Born Destiny Hope Cyrus, Cyrus when she resumes her North she has more than 17 million American tour in August. Twitter followers and Pittsburgh was added to 47 million Facebook likes. Cyrus’ tour schedule after a health issue earlier this year required postponing and rescheduling dates for concerts in North America. In April, the tour was put on hold when Cyrus reportedly suffered a severe reaction to antibiotics which rendered her unable to perform. Pittsburgh fans will be treated to the star’s unrestrained performance. In earlier concerts, Cyrus slides onto the stage via a giant tongue sticking out of an image of her own face and rides a giant flying hotdog. She makes statements via her performance wardrobe which includes white western boots with dollar signs, as well as a costume seemingly made of money, another in a cannabis leaf print, and a glittery number festooned with red lips and a protruding tongue. Miley won’t settle for just shocking us.

Tongues, a Cyrus trademark of sorts, are everywhere during the show – on costumes, in images used on set, and of course, there’s the performer’s creative use of her own appendage. Both singles, “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop,” off Bangerz already have sold 4.3 million copies in the U.S. alone. “Wrecking Ball” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks. It became Cyrus’ first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and her fastest-flying Top 10 on Radio Songs. Bangerz has been getting rave reviews including Entertainment Weekly calling it “…utterly fresh, a pop blitz from a hip-hop blueprint, and proof that Miley won’t settle for just shocking us.” Us Weekly declared it “the year’s most titillating pop explosion” awarding the album “4 stars (out of 4.”) Continued on page 75
