ERIC CLAPTON TOUR CELEBRATES GUITARIST’S 50 YEARS OF MUSIC By: Pam Thompson Referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time, Eric Clapton, ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time” returns to Pittsburgh. Slowhand himself will make his first appearance at CONSOL Energy Center on April 6 as part of a world tour celebrating his iconic 50 years in music and will be joined by very special guest The Wallflowers. Clapton has assembled an impressive band for this year’s concerts including long-time touring partners: Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, Steve Jordan on drums, Chris Stainton on piano and keyboards, and Willie Weeks on bass. Completing the band will be newcomers Paul Carrack on organ and keyboards, and Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar. Backing vocalists, Michelle John and Sharon White, round out the touring band. On the Rolling Stone ranking, Eddie Van Halen says of Clapton, “There was a basic simplicity to his playing, his style, his vibe and his sound. He took a Gibson guitar and plugged it into a Marshall, and that was it. The basics.

The Pittsburgh concert is scheduled as the last on the U.S. leg of this year’s tour. Before Clapton and his band go on to Ireland where they open the eight-nation European leg of the anniversary tour, they will go to New York for the two-day Crossroads Guitar Festival which Clapton organizes. Known among his peers as a great collaborator, this will be Clapton’s fourth Crossroads Guitar Festival. “The Crossroads Festival is the realization of a dream for me to gather a group of amazingly talented musicians to perform on one stage,” says Clapton. “The Crossroads performers are all musicians I admire and respect.” Pittsburgh’s concert is scheduled as the last for the U.S. leg of the tour before Clapton and his band open Clapton, who was the eight-nation European tour. challenged by drug and alcohol abuse in the ‘70s and ‘80s, organized the festival to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, which he founded in 1998. Crossroads Centre, Antigua also operates a 16-bed halfway house exclusively for Antigua residents and facilitates a school-based education series, “Breaking the Cycle,” in all Antiguan schools. More than 30 of the world’s most renowned guitarists will play sidemen to each other over two nights at Madison Square Garden. Along with Clapton, the two-night festival will feature Allman Brothers Band, BB King, Brad Paisley, Gary Clark Jr., Jeff Beck John Mayer, Keith Urban, Vince Gill and many more. Clapton also lends his talent to other good causes. He signed on for the 12-12-12 Concert at Madison Square Garden to help raise funds to help those in New York and New Jersey who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. 12-12-12, broadcast internationally on television and online to an audience of two billion people, was a who’s who of rock and pop music. Clapton joined Paul McCartney, Bill Joel, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and other stars to help victims of the devastating storm. Also last year, Clapton joined other blues musicians in a tribute concert honoring the memory of the legendary Hubert Sumlin. The Eric Clapton signed on for 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden to help raise funds for those evening was a benefit for impacted by Hurricane Sandy. the Jazz Foundation of America, which supports 6,000 musician emergency cases each year. A fund has now been established in Sumlin’s name which will help jazz and blues legends in crisis. It was Sumlin’s wish that no musician need to go through what he did – die in poverty due to lack of health care. Clapton has performed on albums by Aretha Franklin, Steven Stills, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Plastic Ono Band, Ringo Starr, Sting and Roger Waters. He joined the Rolling Stones last November at London’s O2 Arena on Muddy Waters’ “Champagne and Reefer” in celebration of their 50th anniversary. Clapton came to his solo career by way of the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, and Derek and the Dominos. 35th anniversary editions of “Slowhand” were released internationally last year. First released in November 1977, “Slowhand” was the most successful album of Clapton’s ‘70s studio recordings. It reached No.2 on the Billboard chart, where it stayed for five weeks, spending a total of 74 weeks on the American album chart. “Slowhand” features “Wonderful Tonight,” “Lay Down Sally” and “Cocaine” – songs that are still heard regularly on radio and at Eric Clapton’s live shows.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.
LOST AND FOUND If an item is lost or found during an event please see the Guest Services office located outside section 104 or call 412.804.7903 after the event.
PROHIBITED ITEMS Bags, back packs, air horns, coolers (hard/ soft sided), thermoses, large purses, cans, bottles, flasks, alcoholic beverages, laser pointers, video or audio recording devices, professional cameras/lens, tripods, banners or signs on poles, weapons or any other items deemed dangerous and/or inappropriate are strictly prohibited. Small purses, camera cases, binocular cases and diaper bags will be permitted, however, all items that do not pass security must be returned to vehicles.

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.

LEGENDARY BARRY MANILOW TO PLAY By: Pam Thompson Singer-songwriter, producer, showman, director, actor, hit-maker, and humanitarian are roles that describe Barry Manilow who will come to CONSOL Energy Center in April for a concert long awaited by fans. Known as a legend, an icon, and a superstar in the world of entertainment, Manilow performs for Pittsburgh on April 19, at 7:30 p.m. This will be his first-ever performance at CONSOL Energy Center. In his career spanning more than four decades, Manilow performed seven concerts at the Pittsburgh Penguins former home, the Civic Arena between 1980 and 2009.

Manilow has written hundreds of songs and performed around the globe thrilling millions of fans, winning a Grammy, two Emmys, a Tony Award and an Oscar nomination along the way. He has produced, arranged, and released more than 40 albums over the course of his career. Fans were disappointed last fall when Manilow’s Pittsburgh concert was postponed. The entertainer is passionate about the importance of music education in schools. To inspire others to donate, Manilow personally donates a Yamaha piano and provides those who donate with two free tickets his show. He will renew his musical instrument drive on behalf of Pittsburgh Public Schools in advance of his April concert. The Manilow Music Project has donated more than $1 million worth of instruments to middle schools and high schools across the United States. Hundreds of instruments have made their way into school districts across America as a result of the performer’s efforts. The Manilow Music Project also provides music scholarships at universities throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Formed by the performer in 2008 in response to the needs of the local public schools and their severely depleted music programs, the Manilow Music Project is part of the Manilow Fund for Health and Hope. The Manilow Fund for Health & Hope is a nonprofit organization that the singer-songwriter created to support local, grassroots organizations that promote education and healthcare. The fund donates to organizations that focus on cancer, AIDS and other health challenges, humanitarian causes including homelessness, children’s issues, victims of abuse and animal welfare, and music education. Through his charities, scholarships in Manilow’s name are established at Eastern Michigan University, George Washington University, Northwestern University, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Settlement Music School, University of Nevada, University of Southern California, and the University of Toronto. The tune is included in Manilow’s newest holiday compilation, “The Classic Christmas Album.” With his 50th Adult Contemporary hit, Manilow passes Johnny Mathis (49 entries) and becomes just the fifth artist to post at least 50 entries in the Billboard AC chart which has published weekly for nearly 52 years. Elton John leads with 68, followed by Barbra Streisand (64), Neil Diamond (58) and Elvis Presley (53). Manilow first appeared on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart the week of Nov. 30, 1974, with “Mandy.” Seven weeks later, it became his first of 13 Number One songs. In the chart’s ~Barry Manilow archives, only Elton John (16) and the Carpenters (15) have logged more leaders. “My life has been one big miracle,” Manilow says. “I come from the world of trying to write a song that will outlive me. That’s every composer’s goal: to write such a wonderful song that will live forever.” Manilow, the showman has toured the world, and lists 16 tours in his credentials. The artist heads to Pittsburgh by way of Broadway where his new concert series, “Manilow on Broadway” gets 2013 started right. “Growing up in New York, Broadway has always held a special place in my heart and I am honored to have the opportunity to make the St. James Theatre my home in the new year,” says Manilow. New York’s theater scene should go well for the entertainer if past performance is any indicator. In 1977, he received a Tony Award for “Barry Manilow on Broadway.” His roots are in Brooklyn. While growing up there, music was an integral part of his life. By the age of seven, he was taking accordion lessons and playing a neighbor’s piano. Choosing a career in music while still in his teens, he attended New York College of Music and the Julliard School of Music while working in the mailroom at CBS. He subsequently became musical director for a CBS show named

“Callback” (the predecessor of American Idol) which led to a lucrative sideline on New York’s advertising jingle circuit. Manilow produced four albums for Bette Midler ranging from “The Divine Miss M” in 1972 to “Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook” in 2005. He also has produced albums for Diane Schuur, Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson. Manilow’s autobiography, “Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise” was published in 1987 when he was 44. Since his memoir came out, he has done eight more television specials for a total of 12. In 2006, he won his second Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for “Manilow: Music and Passion” on PBS. Also after his book came out, he scored and composed music for three movies, and in 2002, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also appeared on several television series in those ensuing years, including “The Family Guy,” “American Idol” (2), “Will & Grace,” “Ally McBeal” and “Murphy Brown,” and he released 13 of his 15 video/DVD works. As he heads toward his BIG 7-0 in June, it looks like he made it – and – is ready to take a chance again.

ICE IN APRIL FORECAST FOR PITTSBURGH, HOST OF FROZEN FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP By: Pam Thompson Ice is in the forecast for April in Pittsburgh when the 2013 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four comes to CONSOL Energy Center. This will be the NCAA’S 64th annual men’s ice hockey championship and the first time that the contest will be decided in Pennsylvania. “The best college hockey in the nation and numerous future NHL caliber talents will be coming to Pittsburgh,” says Kristin Fasbender, the NCAA’s associate director of championships and alliances.
CONSOL Energy Center and Robert Morris University, the host institution in Pittsburgh, are partnering with the NCAA to present this year’s Frozen Four. The men’s hockey championship became the “Frozen Four” in 1999. According to NCAA history, throughout the 1990s, the hockey community had discussed a desire to create a memorable brand for the championship that was more unique than the “Final Four” which had been closely associated with the NCAA basketball championship. After NCAA staff and committee discussions, it was determined that it was worth trying the “Frozen Four” name. It seems that the “Frozen Four” reference goes back to an unofficial trial use of the phrase at the 1999 championship in Anaheim, Calif. “Frozen Four” was officially incorporated into the logo for the 2000 championship in Providence, R.I. The phrase was trademarked and the rest is history. The NCAA announced CONSOL Energy Center as the venue for this year’s Frozen Four in July 2010, a month before the new arena opened. Discussing why CONSOL Energy Center was chosen to host the Frozen Four, Fasbender says, “The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee felt continued on page 42

that it would be a tremendous opportunity for the student-athletes to play in a new facility. They were able to see the artist renderings at the time of the bid selection and knew it would be state-of-the-art in every way, so they figured it would be an excellent choice for the NCAA student-athletes and spectators to attend the championship.” Fasbender adds, “The committee liked that Pittsburgh was a place that was central to the college hockey community and that Robert Morris University, the host institution has a college hockey program. In addition, the committee liked the commitment of the Pittsburgh Penguins to the event and how hockey is a significant part of the community.” Limited tickets went on sale to the general public in early December. Fasbender says, “With the likelihood that the Men’s Frozen Four will be sold out, we want to encourage fans to continue to plan on experiencing the other ancillary events that will take place around the event.” The NCAA promises a variety of ways to be a part of the Frozen Four experience even for those without tickets to the games. Frozen Four fans will have the opportunity to participate in various interactive activities and entertainment, autograph sessions, appearances from popular hockey stars, and much more on game days at Frozen Fest. This free event for fans will be located just outside of CONSOL Energy Center.

The NCAA’s Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee announces the 16 teams selected for this year’s ice hockey championships on March 24 at 9 p.m. during a show on ESPNU. The field will be selected from 59 NCAA Division I institutions. There will be five automatic qualifiers, each from the Atlantic Hockey Association, Central Collegiate Hockey Association, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East Association, and Western Collegiate Hockey Association in addition to 11 at-large teams. Regionals leading up to the Frozen Four will play out at four different sites across the country March 29-31. Four teams will compete in each regional for the honor of advancing to the championship play at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. Regional hosts and venues are: • West, hosted by Michigan in Grand Rapids, Mich., at Van Andel Arena • Northeast, hosted by New Hampshire, in Manchester, N.H., at Verizon Wireless Arena • Midwest, hosted by Bowling Green State, in Toledo, Ohio, at Huntington Center, and • East, hosted by Brown, in Providence, R.I. at Dunkin’ Donuts Center Championship play at CONSOL Energy Center will begin with two semifinal games on April 11. Campaign to Stop Violence, to more than 300 schools and youth centers. Cheese brings all of the energy – and antics – of a Harlem Globetrotters’ performance to “ABC” assemblies. He says that his favorite part of being a Globetrotter is talking to kids about being positive, anti-bullying and having a dream. When he visited the Blue Lancers at St. Sylvester School in Brentwood, Pa., the 26-year-old basketball phenom asked the students in kindergarten through 8th grade what they dream of being. Answers ranged from teacher to basketball player to sports star. Cheese tells everyone, “You can do it. Follow your dreams. Dream BIG. Be BIG,” and he talks about what it takes to achieve a dream: • Dedication • Determination • Responsibility, and • Education “Positive energy makes positive things happen in your life,” Cheese tells the students. Cheese teaches, “A for action. Don’t be afraid to tell someone – a parent, a teacher, a principal – when you see bullying and don’t try to break it up yourself.” “B is for bravery.” Making muscles with his arms and encouraging the students to mimic him, Cheese tells them, “Stay away from rumors, lies and gossip. Don’t listen to a bully making fun of someone else. Bullies want attention. Don’t give them what they want.” “C is for compassion. Put your hands on your heart,” he says. “Care about others besides yourself. If a person is being bullied, be a friend to that person.” Cheese had the crowd roaring from the start. Loudly and enthusiastically, they echoed the ABCs, raised their hands to volunteer replies to his questions, laughed and gave high fives and hugs to the Globetrotter. Audience volunteers helped to illustrate the ABCs with lots of goodhumored joking, and they got to join Cheese who led a famous Harlem Globetrotter Magic Circle and a game of “You Are Out.” In “You Are Out,” players form a circle around Cheese and have to catch his passes. A player is eliminated when a pass is missed. A tip for anyone playing “You Are Out” with Cheese – Stay focused. If the basketball star tells the crowd, “Give him a hand,” he’s probably tossing the ball to that person at the same time. Discussing her experience with “Treasure Trove,” Maria says, “I loved continued on page 52

skating competitively, but skating in the shows is more rewarding.” “I love playing to the crowd, especially the little kids in the audience,” she says. It’s not unusual to see lots of mini Disney characters in the audience, and Maria says, “Some adults come in costume and they also enjoy getting into the act.” Maria sees a lot of fans of all ages with lights, props and signs. “You can tell that they are trying to get performers’ attention,” and the performers try to react with everyone, she says. “Treasure Trove” includes a pre-show number with the Incredibles who dance and invite the audience to warm up with them. The audience gets energized by running with Dash and working out with Mr. Incredible. Maria says that the warm-up group’s job is to try to get the entire audience dancing and it’s a lot of fun before the show even begins. Her favorite moment in the show comes when Peter Pan flies in and surprises everyone. “It is a huge crowd pleaser and high energy,” says Maria, adding that the audience loves being sprinkled with Tinkerbell’s pixie dust. Her Disney on Ice tour will be her first visit to Pittsburgh. It will be a special stop for Maria because her dad, who lives near State College, will come to see her perform and visit. When the skaters are off the ice, Maria says, “We do a lot of giving back.” Skaters regularly visit hospitals and programs that help children like Ronald McDonald House, Brothers & Sisters of America and Make A Wish.

NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF BRINGS GLITTER TO CONSOL ENERGY CENTER DINERS By: Pam Thompson Lewis G. Cramer, Jr., the new executive chef for ARAMARK, CONSOL Energy Center, brings some glitter with him to his new post. “We are really excited about Lewis’ experience with Five Star and Five Diamond properties,” says James Carter, general manager for ARAMARK at CONSOL Energy Center. Chef Cramer’s professional culinary journey has taken him to the Ritz Carlton Chicago, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa, the Four Seasons, Ocean Grand in Palm Beach, Fla., and Heinz Field among other dining operations. “I’ve hit almost all aspects of the field,” says Chef Cramer. “My professional experience is wide and varied.” He is lending that experience to the introduction of new foods planned for CONSOL Energy Center’s premium venues and its concessions. “We will be gearing food more toward Pittsburgh area flavor profiles,” Chef Cramer says. He explains that this means an emphasis on seasonally available foods, some traditional dishes and preparation methods to bring out the best flavors of foods. One example of the local flavor profiles is his own specialty, braised short ribs, which appear on CONSOL Energy Center’s catering menus. New foods are being planned for the premium venues as well as concessions, says Chef Cramer. Two new menu options will be offered on game days. “Gourmet Grilled Cheese” in Section 107, raises the once humble sandwich to star status with specialty cheeses, fillings and artisan bread, and offers homemade soups and salads as accompaniments. “Healthy Options” in Section 116, provides delicious and healthful menu choices, including a range of gluten-free choices. Chef Cramer oversees all aspects of CONSOL Energy Center’s premium dining services in its clubs, suites and loge boxes, as well as concessions, quality and food standards. He came to CONSOL Energy Center from ARAMARK, Heinz Field, where as executive sous chef, he was involved in overseeing menu development, quality assurance, ordering and management. He cites among his professional highlights the MLB All Star Game in 2012, the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, the AFC Championship Game in 2010, and the inaugural of CONSOL Energy Center in 2010, as well as his experience with the PGA Tour. Chef Cramer leads planning for major events at CONSOL Energy Center like its employee Gourmet Grilled Cheese appreciation dinner, the annual Skates & Plates Charity Gala, and the Coaches and Connoisseurs fundraiser. Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Somerset, Chef Cramer studied at the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts in Pittsburgh which landed him an externship at the Four Seasons, Ocean Grand in Lettuce Wraps Palm Beach, Fla., where he rose through the kitchen ranks to become chef de partie at The Bistro in the hotel. He moved on to the Ritz Carlton Chicago where he was on the Dining Room staff when the hotel was voted the Number One business hotel in the country by Condé Nast, and when “Gourmet” magazine ranked its dining room Cheesesteak Taocs in the Top Ten Restaurants in the country. Moving on to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa, Chef Cramer held posts in the Golden Trout and Lautrec Dining Room before becoming chef of Aqueous at Falling Rock overseeing all food and beverage operations.

The first two rinks, located in the City of Pittsburgh at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and in Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and local municipalities are collaborating on the project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport.” Prior to Project Power Play, there was only one public dek hockey facility in the city and it was getting incredible usage, according to Soltesz. In addition, there were 32 Citiparks with tennis or basketball courts lined for continued on page 62

hockey. Players had to bring their own equipment and nets. Citiparks and local athletic associations will program the Banksville and Lewis Park rinks, with assistance from the Penguins. Permits for the Banksville Park rink will be issued by the city’s Department of Public Works. In Hazelwood, Citiparks and the YMCA are developing a schedule for the rink. Rinks are open to the public when permit activities are not taking place. Locations of four rinks to be built in 2013 are: • Brookline • Pittsburgh, in the eastern part of the city • Oakmont, and • Hosanna House’s Sherwood Facility, located on the border of Wilkinsburg and Forest Hills Locations for the remaining six rinks are under consideration. Four will be built in 2014, and two more in 2015. Sites for rinks are selected based on community need and commitment to developing programs. “These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it. No expense was spared.” Most of the rinks will be 155 by 75 feet. The Hazelwood rink which is in an under-served community will be 100 by 40 feet due to space limitation at the site which has two basketball courts that are used constantly, Soltesz says. The rinks are multi-sport courts and each will include a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences will enclose each rink to keep pucks inside. Mylec Sports, Riley Manufacturing and the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works worked on the first two rinks. Project Power Play dovetails with other Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation programs like PensFIT which provided almost every elementary school in Allegheny County with floor hockey equipment and instruction manuals. These same manuals will be available at Project Power Play rinks. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”
