UNDERWOOD STILL EARNING IDOL STATUS, BRINGS “BLOWN AWAY” TOUR TO CONSOL The first time that Carrie Underwood, a five-time Grammy Award winner, performed in Pittsburgh, she was with the 2005 “American Idol Tour” and had just won that title which launched her music career. When she brings “The Blown Away Tour” to CONSOL Energy Center, she comes as Billboard’s Reigning Queen of Country Music and with a slew of awards to her credit to prove that she earned the honor. To her Pittsburgh fans, Underwood says, “Thank you for allowing me the chance to play in your city. I can’t wait to show you all what we’ve been working on. We’re going to have a great time together!” “We have really worked hard at this show and have put a lot of love into it. I just want people to come and be amazed! My biggest hope is that everyone will have a great time and enjoy the fruits of our labor!” she says. Commenting on the Billboard title, Underwood says, “I never expected to be able to sing for a living, let alone be named anything by Billboard! I have truly been blessed and will take all the names anyone wants to give me as long as they’re good!”

Underwood has lived up to her American Idol title by being nominated for numerous prestigious music awards from around the globe over the past seven years. She has 15 number one hits making her the female country artist with the most number one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. Asked how she keeps her feet on the ground, Underwood replies, “Well, I certainly hope that I do a decent job of remaining a ‘normal’ person – whatever that means. I have wonderful parents and a great group of friends, and of course, my husband grew up the same way that I did, so keeping those values is pretty easy. I would like to think that I am still the same person that I was before all this happened to me. I just have a cooler job now.” ~Carrie Underwood Underwood cites her parents as her inspiration. “I am just a product of all that I have been through and all that I have been able to do. My parents are definitely inspirations in my life. They always worked hard for us kids and always want what’s best for us,” she says. Talking about the inspiration for her music, she says, “I think all songwriters and artists are little sponges. We soak up every experience and the stories and experiences of those around us to pour into our songs. I look for inspiration anywhere I can find it.” While Underwood grew up enjoying music, she opted to go to college and study mass communication after graduating as an honor student and salutatorian of her high school class in 2001. Of that decision, she says, “I am such a planner. The reality is that there are so many people out there who want to sing and would give anything to do it. I didn’t consider myself to be special in any way. Why would I get the chance to sing and make music over all those other people?

I am just a “ product of all

that I have been through and all that I have been able to do. My parents are definitely inspirations in my life.

Plus, my parents raised me to be responsible and plan for the future. College was simply the next step after high school. And, in hindsight, I am so glad that I got the chance to go to college and grow up before everything happened to me. I learned how to be on my own and had so much fun during that time in my life.” On her decision to audition for “American Idol” in 2004 while she was still working toward her bachelor’s degree, Underwood says, “I saw coverage of the auditions on the news and thought I would check out where the other auditions would be held. I saw that they were going to be in St. Louis and my mom offered to go with me if I wanted to go. I guess I thought, ‘Why not?’ If I never made it past the first round, most likely no one would find out about it, so what did I have to lose?” In 2006, the year after winning “American Idol,” Underwood finished her undergrad studies at Northeastern State in Oklahoma. Winning American Idol did not hinder Carrie Underwood from obtaining her bachelor’s degree in 2006. continued on page 10

She earned her bachelor’s degree magna cum laude. “I had already put in so much time,” she says. “I’m not the kind of person who would run 75 percent of a race and not finish it. Plus, I know that someday I’ll be talking to my children about the importance of education and I don’t want them coming back at me saying that I didn’t finish, using that as an excuse not to go.” Underwood advises others who are chasing their career dreams, “Definitely follow your dreams, but remain responsible. Education is important and God will take you where he wants you to go. Just keep an eye out for those open doors and windows.” On the future direction of her music, Underwood says, “I honestly don’t know. I go and my music goes where it wants to take me. I try not to put too many parameters on it and just let the songs write themselves.” Considering her dreams outside of music and entertainment, Underwood says, “I just enjoy spending time with my husband and my dogs. I’m sure kids and such are somewhere in the future, but not the near future. I’m just enjoying going with the flow.” Underwood is number 85 on “The Hockey News” annual list of 100 People of Power and Influence in Ice Hockey. Her husband is Mike Fisher, center for the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League. Fisher has played in CONSOL Energy Center, but this fall will be Underwood’s first time in Pittsburgh’s awardwinning venue. When asked what friendly advice her husband might share with her, Underwood jokes, “Stay out of the locker rooms! Ha ha! Hockey locker rooms can be stinky! Although I’m sure the ones at CONSOL Energy Center are beautiful!”

Definitely “ follow your

dreams, but remain responsible. Education is important and God will take you where he wants you to go. Just keep an eye out for those open doors and windows.

On the topic of her pre-concert ritual, Underwood says, “I get myself ready with hair and make-up, and the band and me say a little prayer right before we take the stage.” “Touring is a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun,” says Underwood. “It’s a little difficult at times living on a bus, but we always come away from it with lots of funny stories. The best part is actually being on that stage every night! The energy from the crowd is always so electric! There’s nothing else like it anywhere!” Asked if there is one of her songs that she relates to the most, Underwood replies, “That’s a hard question because I relate to all of them. I am a lady of many layers and can find bits of myself in every song. I guess songs like ‘All-American Girl’ and ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’ and ‘Forever Changed’ resonate with me quite a bit because those are songs about real life not just songs for fun.” Underwood will donate $1 from each ticket sold on the North American leg of “The Blown Away Tour” to support Red Cross disaster relief. Her Pittsburgh appearance is set for Tuesday, November 27 at 7:30 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Center.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE

In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing.

“It provides the perfect stage for Americans to celebrate and welcome our Olympians home from winning six medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, including the women’s team, all-around and floor exercise gold, as well as the balance beam bronze medal, in addition to recognizing many of our Olympic and World medalists.” Nastia Liukin, 2008 Olympic all-around champion, will lead an impressive cast that will include members of the men’s and women’s 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympic teams, along with past Olympians and U.S. medalists in men’s, women’s, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling. Local area gymnasts also will have the chance to participate in this tour stop’s performance. is one of the top basketball venues in the country. It’s going to be a great college basketball atmosphere.” In addition to the City Game, the Duquesne Dukes will play three games at CONSOL Energy Center this basketball season beginning with West Virginia University in December. The WWE Raw Holiday Tour will bring everyone’s favorite Superstars and Divas to town. When the Harlem Globetrotters return to Pittsburgh, they are promising a basketball experience unlike anything Western Pennsylvania has ever seen. Pittsburgh fans will see a female Globetrotter for the first time in 20 years. Also new this year, fans will help to “write the rules,” according to the Globetrotters who say that fans will have unparalleled control over the rules of the game. NCAA Division 1 newcomer Penn State will join Robert Morris, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio) in the first Three Rivers Classic, a two-day, men’s college hockey tournament at CONSOL Energy Center. as CONSOL Energy Center also will host the NCAA Frozen Four in April. Planners call the invitational a great step forward for college hockey in Pittsburgh. CONSOL Energy Center has hosted Robert Morris University hockey for the past few years, and with Penn State entering NCAA Division 1 hockey, organizers say that it was a perfect opportunity to build an annual event around those two programs. “We are very excited about this new tournament and the opportunity to host it at CONSOL Energy Center,” says Robert Morris Head Men’s Hockey Coach Derek Schooley. “The Three Rivers Classic will be a great showcase for our sport as well as a tremendous warm-up for the 2013 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in April. We are grateful to both the Pittsburgh Penguins and CONSOL Energy Center, and we look forward to a successful partnership throughout next season.”

“ENERGY” OF ARENA DRAWS ACTS, CROWDS, ATTENTION TO PITTSBURGH “Energy” is CONSOL Energy Center’s middle name. Perhaps it is that energy about the two-year-old arena that enables it to draw entertainers and audiences. CONSOL Energy Center and Pittsburgh are earning a reputation in the entertainment industry as a great concert market with the ability to draw a crowd. The city’s arena received recognition in the most recent mid-year rankings of three prominent industry publications: • “Pollstar,” the trade publication covering the worldwide concert industry • “Billboard,” the world’s premier music publication and primary source of information on trends and innovation in music, and • “Venues Today,” the leading source of original reporting for live entertainment and events, serving management, owners and suppliers to music, sports and meetings venues internationally. “Pollstar’s” 2012 Mid-Year Foo Fighters Worldwide Ranking of the Top 100 Arenas in Worldwide Ticket Sales put CONSOL Energy Center 41st and its ranking for North America had the Pittsburgh arena ranked 18th. “Billboard’s” Mid-Year Rankings of Top 10 Venues, capacity 15,001 or more, placed CONSOL Energy Center 10th, with 14 sell-outs, 51 shows and continued on page 44

Jen Leffler of Generation Exodus says, “Playing shows in Pittsburgh allows artists and concert-goers the opportunity to experience the revitalized downtown area of the country’s most livable city (The Economist). Generation Exodus looks to the CONSOL Energy Center as a home for many of our concerts. The facility is state-of-the-art, the staff is knowledgeable and we rest assured knowing our concerts will be handled with great professionalism. CONSOL always draws a great crowd, selling out events from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the most popular events of today. CONSOL Energy Center has been a fantastic fit for Generation Exodus. Our company is excited to continue to bring the highest quality Christian concerts to Pittsburgh and to the CONSOL Energy Center.” Sharon Kramer, Marketing ~Sharon Kramer Manager, AEG/CONSOL Energy Center, says, “The Pittsburgh community has fully embraced the venue and supported all genres of entertainment that have played at CONSOL Energy Center since its grand opening celebration two years ago. From concerts to family shows and comedy tours to sporting events – without the support of the Pittsburgh community we would not be as successful as we are.” On the symbiotic relationship between performers and their audiences, Kramer adds, “At the same time that Pittsburghers have embraced the talent that has come here, the performers have given back by supporting local charitable requests.” Frequently, artists playing at CONSOL Energy Center accommodate requests from community programs for autographed items or other donations to use in their fundraising efforts, according to Kramer who says that Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and The Family Hospice & Palliative Care Music & Art Therapy Program are just two examples of local organizations that have been helped by entertainers playing CONSOL Energy Center.

PENGUINS FOUNDATION EXPLORER SERIES PLANTS SEEDS OF CURIOSITY WITH YOUTH Seeds of curiosity and knowledge are being planted via Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s new, free program, the Explorer Series. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, says, “We don’t compete with other institutions like Carnegie Science Center. All that we want to do is whet these kids’ appetites, maybe influence their career path or provide some general knowledge on a topic. For us it’s trying to plant the seed for them to go after more information or education.” Designed to educate young people in a way that planners say is “cool,” “fun” and “exciting” to students, robotics was the topic of the first Explorer Series. Presented just before the start of the current school year, the free program had phenomenal attendance, according to Soltesz.

Some 600 students were invited and 550 came to CONSOL Energy Center to participate. Explorer Series is offered to girls and boys between ages 7 and 13 at no charge. Soltesz says that this is possible through the participation of FedEx Ground, the primary sponsor, along with additional support from CONSOL Energy and Cal U. Soltesz explains that the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s mission includes actively promoting the value of education and ~Dave Soltesz providing essential life skills to young people in the community. He says that the Penguins were “blessed” with a new building with help from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Penguins are committed to ensuring that CONSOL Energy Center is an asset for the region. “When the building isn’t being used, we try to use it for programs to support our community,” he says. The Explorer Series is designed for 500 to 700 participants to allow all of them access to the hands-on demonstrations exhibited during the program. Participants gathered in the north end of CONSOL Energy Center’s seating bowl for the robotics program opening which included a video introduction to the topic on the arena’s giant digital display. Then the students were guided onto the concourse where 24 hands-on exhibits were available. High school and college students staffed many of the exhibits which also created an opportunity for the young participants to learn from the older students.

To remind participants of the robotics information shared in the Explorer Series, each student took home a Boy Scouts Robotics How to Book, safety glasses and a fun workbook. A fall program is being planned, according to Soltesz, who says that future presentations dealing with the environment, NASA and planets are being developed. In addition, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to rotate the Explorer Series through the region’s school districts. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Mission is to actively promote physical well being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.
