PENGUINS POND AT SOUTHSIDE WORKS

TO OPEN FOR PUBLIC SKATING, YOUTH HOCKEY NOV. 18 “Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works” is under construction now and will open for public skating and youth hockey starting Friday, Nov. 18, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced today. The outdoor community ice rink will be located at the intersection of 26th and Sidney Streets in the SouthSide Works complex. In addition to the Penguins, it is a joint effort of presenting sponsor Highmark, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), rink operator Magic Ice and the Soffer Organization which operates SouthSide Works. “Penguins Pond” will operate from Nov. 18 through Jan. 8. Public skating will be available every day, and groups of 20 or more also may reserve the ice for skating and/or hockey. Both the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) will be playing games throughout the seven-week period of operation. The Penguins operated an outdoor rink for 10 days at last year’s NHL Winter Classic on the North Shore and the facility was so popular the team decided to make it an annual winter fixture.

[4

In many ways, Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works will be the lasting legacy of the Winter Classic -- and a focal point for kids and families to skate together outdoors during the holiday season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Penguins. “Thanks to the efforts of Highmark, the URA, Magic Ice and the Soffer Organization, we were able to come up with a great new site for the rink at SouthSide Works that will enable us to keep it open for more than 50 days and provide a unique winter benefit to the community.” PJ Dick/Trumbull Corporation constructed the sandbox that is the foundation of the rink and the Rink Specialists company is building the actual rink. Magic Ice will be operating the facility.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS YOUTH HOCKEY SCHOOL

UPCOMING CAMPS & CLINICS HOLIDAY POWER SKATING SCHOOL World-renowned power skating instructor and Penguins Skating Consultant Marianne Watkins will host the Holiday Power Skating Clinic from December 28th to 30th at the Iceoplex at Southpointe. Under Watkins’ tutelage, the Holiday Power Skating School serves as a mid-season opportunity for youth players to refine their skating skills.

TUNE UP FOR TRYOUTS The Pittsburgh Penguins Tune Up for Tryouts is held each year in March and is designed to help local youth hockey players prepare for the upcoming season’s tryouts. Skill development and power skating instruction are provided by local college hockey coaches and Penguins Skating Consultant, Marianne Watkins. This year’s Tune-up clinic will be March 28-30 at Ice Castle.

BATTLE CAMP Former Penguins defenseman Dennis Owchar conducts the Penguins’ three-day Battle Camp in mid-March. This clinic is designed to teach youth hockey players how to properly use their bodies to gain the advantage on an opponent to maintain puck possession, establish or maintain position or to gain control of the puck from an opponent. In the Squirt and Pee Wee divisions, learning how to “battle” for position will enable players to compete confidently in traffic. Bantam age players and older will continue to work on their “battle skills” and will also learn how to check an opposing player while also receiving instruction on how to properly receive a check. The clinic will be held March 13th to the 15th at the Iceoplex at Southpointe. [ 14

GIRLS CAMP The Pittsburgh Penguins Girls Hockey Camp is held in June. Penguins Skating Consultant Marianne Watkins and former St. Lawrence University Women’s Team Captain & Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls Coach, Kate Michael, will provide power-skating and skills instruction. This 3-day camp is for girls only and is run by a staff of all female instructors. The dates are tentatively set for June 28th to 30th at the Ice Castle.

SCRIMMAGE CAMP Each June, the Penguins host the wildly-popular Pittsburgh Penguins Scrimmage Camp. Former Penguins forward Phil Bourque, Penguins Skating Consultant Marianne Watkins, other former Penguins players and local college coaches provide power-skating instruction and skill development. Campers are divided into teams and conclude each day by participating in a round robin tournament. The culmination of camp features two semifinal contests, a consolation game and a championship tilt for each age group. The dates for this are June 18th to the 22nd at the Ice Castle.

HOCKEY IN JULY This summer the Penguins will open the CONSOL Energy Center to the youth hockey community for a series of clinics and a Mite ADM Jamboree in early July. Stay tuned for information about Hockey in July 2012, scheduled from July 6 until July 15.

SUMMER HOCKEY SCHOOL The Summer Hockey School in August is the flagship program of the Penguins Hockey School. It is a five day camp filled with skills instruction by radio analyst and Penguins alumnus, Phil Bourque, along with former Penguins player and seven-time Stanley Cup Champion, Bryan Trottier. Penguins Skating Consultant Marianne Watkins teaches power skating classes and there are daily scrimmages. Summer Hockey School will be held at the RMU Island Sports Center August 13th to the 17th. LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY IN LARGE NUMBERS As the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey Program begins its fourth season this winter approximately 3,200 children in the Greater Pittsburgh area have been introduced to the game of hockey for the first time. The program assists parents whose children have a desire to play the game by easing the burden of start-up costs associated with the sport. Thanks to Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods, each child who registers receives FREE head-to-toe hockey equipment. Currently, a total 26 Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey programs are taking place at 23 local ice rinks – including four all-girls Learn to Play Hockey clinics.

TM

Still, as the number of programs offered has increased each year, the demand for a slot with Little Penguins is at an all-time high. Online registration for the learn to play program officially opened on November 1st. The first of several rinks sold out within 10 minutes. Within twenty-five minutes, all of the rinks within 30 minutes of Pittsburgh were full and soon after the more distant regional rinks were filled to capacity. “Virtually all of the rinks sold out during day one of registration,” said Mark Shuttleworth, Pittsburgh Penguins Director of Amateur Hockey. “Within the first ten minutes, there were so many rinks sold out that we could not keep up with placing sold out buttons on the website.” As the fourth installment of the successful series approaches, 1,000 children are scheduled to learn how to play the great game of hockey!

OUTDOOR HOCKEY – IT’S CLASSIC Although most hockey players dream of skating in a big arena with thousands of fans cheering them on, those who make it cannot help but remember the feeling of playing outdoors in cold weather with no arena and no fans, just friends. Playing hockey outdoors gives skaters the chance to experience the sport the way it was supposed to be played. When the ponds freeze over, the skates come out and eager players turn the frozen body of water into a makeshift rink. “Being outdoors brings me back to when I was a kid playing on the ponds,” Craig Adams says. “The air in the face, the hard ice.” This brings back memories not only to this Penguins forward, but also for Paul Martin and Deryk Engelland as well. “You’re probably not out there for another reason, just to mess around and get outside,” Martin says. “I enjoy being outside, so it definitely brings back some good memories.” Engelland remembers some of his favorite experiences playing outdoors. “When I was first learning to skate, my Dad would freeze the backyard, trying to make a rink out of it,” Engelland says. “Other than that, the Winter Classic for sure. It’s next to none.” For last year’s Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals, held outside at Heinz Field, the players say that they prepared the same way as they do for indoor games, despite the elements. “Maybe you put on an extra layer to make sure you’re staying warm,” Adams says. “But other than that, you’ve still got to play the same way.” Engelland, on the other hand, admits that he got hot during the game and suggests maybe taking a few layers off. [ 20

Although the Penguins were more concerned about rain than snow last January, they seem to agree about what it is like to play under a wintery landscape. “It’s a lot of fun,” Martin says. “If it’s snowing too hard, that makes it tough to see, especially when you get skating fast. It’s fun to be out there and in the elements.” Adams agrees. “It’s just as pure as you can get,” he says. “You’re outdoors. It’s snowing. You’re in the weather. You’re playing the sport you love to play.” The snow is a sure sign of hockey season, according to Engelland. “When it starts to snow around Christmas and you’re on break from school, you try to get as many guys together as you can to play out there,” Engelland says. “If the weather’s cooperating, it’s great.” It’s the cold weather that gets fans excited to see their idols playing under such conditions. “Everyone bundles up and drinks their coffee and hot cocoa,” Adams says. “It’s just a big event. It’s something fun for everyone to be a part of, whether you’re playing or watching. It makes for good hockey.” Good hockey is what kept Martin and his friends entertained when he played outdoors. “When you’re outside, you’re obviously playing for fun,” Martin says. “It’s not organized. If you’re out there, you’re just out there to have a good time.” Adams and the other kids from his neighborhood would play pickup games on the frozen pond behind his house. “As a kid, I have some of my best memories being out on the ice,” Adams says. “It’s being outside that brings me back to my childhood.” It is the simple, laidback atmosphere that comes with outdoor hockey that means so much to Martin. “I have memories of playing with friends late into the night and just staying out there as long as I wanted, having nobody tell me when I’ve got to get off,” Martin says. “Half the fun is being outside.” Being outside, playing hockey in the snow still has a special meaning for these players, particularly Engelland. “When the snow comes, you really know it’s hockey season.”
