PITTSBURGH SUMMER DREAMS INCLUDE COLDPLAY TOUR STOP By: Pam Thompson

Coldplay’s A Head Full of Dreams Tour comes to Pittsburgh this summer when the acclaimed Brit band performs at venues across the United States. It will be Coldplay’s first appearance at CONSOL Energy Center which will host one of the band’s 22 U.S. concerts. Singer/songwriter Alessia Cara will be the special guest and Foxes will open for Coldplay in Pittsburgh. Among the world’s best-selling band’s with sales exceeding $80 million, Coldplay is Chris Martin, lead vocalist and pianist, Jonny Buckland, lead guitarist, Guy Berryman, bassist, and Will Champion, drummer. A Head Full of Dreams, released last December, is Coldplay’s seventh studio album. Coldplay kicked off its seventh tour in support of the album in March with 10 shows in Latin America followed by a string of 22 shows throughout Europe. The A Head Full of Dreams Tour will play four continents. In December, Coldplay heads to Australia and New Zealand with plans for concerts in Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. A highlight of the European tour for Coldplay’s Martin was headlining the BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May at Powderham Castle in Exeter, his hometown in the U.K. Continued on page 4

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is the station’s flagship live music event and Europe’s largest free ticketed festival. It has a reputation for attracting live performances from some of the biggest and newest acts from the U.K. and around the world. Martin says, “I was born and raised in Exeter so being part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend this year means a huge amount to me personally.” He says that he lived the first few years of his life less than 500 yards from where the Big Weekend takes place.

The Album

A Head Full of Dreams made its U.S. debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It’s first week of sales totaled 210,000 equivalent album units, and it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of American by early March. In the title track Coldplay sings:

…leave your broken windows open and the light just streams and you get a head, A Head Full of Dreams… The album certainly is fulfilling some dreams for Coldplay. Nominated for the Brit Award for British Album of the Year, A Head Full of Dreams reached the top 2 in most major markets, battling Adele’s 25 for the No. 1 spot. A Head Full of Dreams topped the U.K.’s Downloads Chart and the Official Vinyl Albums Chart. Its $235,975 in first week sales were noteworthy in the U.K. where it went to No. 2 on the Albums Chart which represents Coldplay’s highest first week album sales since Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends had $302,074 in first week sales in 2008. A Head Full of Dreams was ranked No. 35 on NME’s 2015 list of best albums. Coldplay began work on A Head Full of Dreams in the summer of 2014 while on the Ghost Stories Tour. The Continued on page 7

band recorded its work through the middle of 2015. It includes among its collaborators Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo, Khatia Buniatishvili and Merry Clayton. Its seventh track, “Kaleidoscope,” is unusual for its work within the work. The recording includes a recording of President Barak Obama singing “Amazing Grace” at Clementa C. Pinckney’s funeral. The album’s tracks include: o “A Head Full of Dreams” o “Birds” o “Hymn for the Weekend” o “Everglow” o “Adventure of a Lifetime” o “Fun” o “Kaleidoscope” o “Army of One” o “Amazing Day” o “Colour Spectrum,” and o “Up&Up.” The first single, “Adventure of a Lifetime,” was released last November in advance of the album’s debut. Two other singles followed: “Hymn for the Weekend” in January and “Up&Up” in April. “Adventure of a Lifetime” remained in the U.K. Top 20 longer than any other Coldplay single. Done in a pop/disco/dance-pop style, it was co-written by the four band members. It was listed at No. 41 on Rolling Stone’s Best Songs of 2015. It’s gone gold, platinum and double platinum on 10 countries’ charts around the world. Receiving critical acclaim and commercial success, “Adventure of a Lifetime” topped the U.S. charts for Alternative, Adult Alternative and Dance Club songs. It made it into the top 20 in 24 markets around the world. The song went to No. 7 on the U.K. Singles Chart and No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. In early January with a wish for a fantastic New Year for all, Coldplay released its “Birds” official video. That same month, the band received the NME Godlike Genius Award for its work. By the end of January, the group released its second single which became the band’s 17th U.K. Top 10 hit, following the band’s performance of the song at this year’s Brit Awards. Coldplay calls its third single, “Up&Up,” the album’s “anthemic closer” and the song provided the finale for Coldplay’s sold-out stadium shows across Latin America this spring. “Up&Up” features guest vocals from Beyoncé and “Gimme Shelter” singer, Merry Clayton, as well as a guitar solo from Noel Gallagher.

Super Bowl Halftime

Coldplay headlined the Super Bowl’s golden anniversary halftime show in February. The spectacle filled the stage, gridiron and all of the seats in California’s Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara when the crowd held up placards to create the message “Believe in Love.” Coldplay’s Martin opened the show with “Yellow,” and the band performed “Viva la Vida” and “Paradise,” before Bruno Mars and his band and then Beyoncé and her dance team joined in, with the three acts performing “Uptown Funk.” Coldplay closed the show with a medley of their hit, “Fix You” and “Up&Up” while the stadium’s big screens showed famous past Super Bowl halftime moments. Following Coldplay’s Super Bowl appearance, A Head Full of Dreams became the group’s seventh No. 1 album in the U.K. Following the Super Bowl and prior to the start of this year’s tour, Coldplay performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, playing the album’s title track and “Up&Up.” Martin told Fallon that Coldplay’s idea for the halftime extravaganza was to “show a picture of togetherness in this time of everyone being so divided.” The band’s front man joked that the concept was altered somewhat when Mars, who Martin had invited to perform, suggested a “dance off.” Martin says that he came in last in the competition. Charitable Work

Last October, a version of the album cover appeared on anonymous posters in the London Underground. Its “flower of life” pattern appeared with the simple note, “December 4.” Some fans claimed that the posters resembled the design on the t-shirt that Martin wore for the Global Citizen Festival in New York City a month earlier. This festival also was the first time that Coldplay performed “Amazing Day” live, the ninth track on A Head Full of Dreams. Similar images appeared in London and online this spring when Album Artists staged a third exhibition for Coldplay. The free exhibition and sale included the original collage by Coldplay and artist Pilar Zeta which became the band’s A Head Full of Dreams cover art. Also in the exhibition were previously unseen works from the development of the album artwork and Zeta’s personal works which inspired Coldplay to commission her. All proceeds of the sale of the A Head Full of Dreams art benefited charities working with disadvantaged children in London. Zeta also donated proceeds from her art to the same charities. JIM GAFFIGAN TOUR OFFERS UP LAUGHS By: Pam Thompson

Introspective Jim Gaffigan brings his humor to Pittsburgh this summer with his new tour, Fully Dressed. Appearing at CONSOL Energy Center for the first time, Gaffigan, who gleans his perspectives from his own experiences, shows audiences the laughs in everyday situations. Unabashedly, he dispenses his thoughts on fatherhood, eating, his religion and contemporary culture with little profanity and just a minute application of edginess. The tour kicked off on July 7, which happened to be the comedian’s 50th birthday. Gaffigan’s wife and collaborator, Jeannie, produced the tour. Fully Dressed is scheduled for 61 shows throughout the United States, Canada and on a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas. Two performances also are slated in London in October before the tour returns to the U.S. for four additional shows by yearend. Gaffigan currently has his own show on TV Land and this year he appears in commercials for Chrysler and KFC. He is a Grammy nominated comedian, New York Times best-selling author, top touring performer, and multi-platinumselling father of five. The Jim Gaffigan Show, a work of fiction, does resemble the comic’s real life. It premiered its second season on Father’s Day with back-to-back episodes. Continued on page 30

Gaffigan has worked in movies and television and received Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Albums. | 29 |

Continued from page 29

The show’s similarities to Gaffigan’s life include that the title character is a standup comedian, married to a woman named Jeannie. They are Catholic, have five children and live in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Gaffigan is one of six siblings himself. His humorous observations include: “Big families are like waterbed stores; they used to be everywhere, and now they’re just weird.” In addition to Jim being the star of the show, the Gaffigans both serve as executive producers and showrunners. Gaffigan and his wife, along with Peter Tolan, developed the TV show. The Los Angeles Times called it “fun and funny,” and People Magazine reported that the debut season was “…one of summer TV’s bright spots.” The comedy co-stars Ashley Williams, Michael Ian Black, and Adam Goldberg. It revolves around Gaffigan’s struggle to balance fatherhood, stand-up comedy and an insatiable appetite in New York City. Williams portrays Jeannie on the show, and there are television versions of the five real-life Gaffigan children. In June, the Gaffigans’ schedule included the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, for The Jim Gaffigan Show Panel, which included Jeannie, Black and Williams. Also planned for the Gaffigans that same month was a New York City appearance for A Conversation with Nathan Lane. When Gaffigan’s comedic career hit a lull in the ‘90s, he auditioned for commercials at the suggestion of a friend, and it was the start of what would become a flourishing, long-time endeavor for him. He has appeared in more than 200 television commercials for Rolling Rock, ESPN and Super Bowl ads for Sierra Mist along with his TV co-star Black. This year, Gaffigan shills for the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica and KFC. In his commercials for Pacifica, he talks about his “Huge Dad Brand.” His real-life wife and children back him up in the sales sketches. Continued on page 33

Gaffigan’s KFC ads began during this year’s Super Bowl where he appears as a nightmare plagued Colonel Sanders. In a KFC follow-up commercial, he is an overly confident portrayer of the Colonel threatening a misconceived strike. He received Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Album last year for Obsessed, and in 2013 for Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe. His specials — Mr. Universe, Obsessed and Beyond the Pale — are available on his website, www.jimgaffigan.com. Gaffigan donates 20% of every sale of Mr. Universe to The Bob Woodruff Foundation to help veterans and their families. He is the author of two New York Times bestsellers, his memoirs – Dad Is Fat, and Food – A Love Story. In Dad Is Fat, Gaffigan calls his wife Jeannie, the only woman that he has ever loved, and “the funniest person I know.” Food and eating are fertile topics in Gaffigan’s repertoire. His views frequently deal with bacon: o “Bacon bits are like the fairy dust of the food community.” o “Do you want to know how good bacon is? To improve other food, they wrap it in bacon.” o “There is something dishonest, though, about putting bacon in a salad. You know. It’s kind of like smoking while you jog.” His thoughts on modern culture include fitness, selfies and sunscreen: o “I saw this woman working out at the gym and I could literally see her ribs. And all I could think was, ‘Man, I haven’t had a McRib in forever.’” o “Instead of enjoying this moment, let’s take pictures.” o “You know what’s easier than applying sunscreen? Not going outside.” Gaffigan holds a Finance degree from Georgetown University where he also played football. His career began veering toward entertainment after graduation. He headed to New York City where he got a day job in advertising and took acting classes at night. HILLSONG UNITED, GUEST LAUREN DAIGLE TO PERFORM AT CONSOL ENERGY CENTER By: Pam Thompson

Hillsong UNITED fans in Pittsburgh get the next-to-the-last concert of the band’s Empires Tour featuring special guest Lauren Daigle this summer. It is Hillsong UNITED’s third tour to appear at CONSOL Energy Center, following concerts in 2011 and 2013. “We haven’t really done our own thing in the USA since WelcomeZion 2013, so we are super excited to be bringing the Empires Tour to the states,” says Joel Houston, a Hillsong UNITED front man and worship leader. Houston says, “We write songs to be sung with people – they are always for the people – so when we get to sing these songs with people on the road, it is the purpose of why we do what we do. We can’t wait to worship with people singing all the new Empires songs as well as everyone’s favorites.” The group says that the tour transforms concert venues into nights of worship and music. “Our hope always has been that people bring someone who doesn't know Jesus and who might not feel comfortable in a church, but would be okay with going to an arena,” says Taya Smith of Hillsong UNITED. “We are called to be invitational with the love, hope, mercy and grace that we have encountered ourselves.” The second leg of the Empires Tour through North American arenas began in April and included 23 concerts. In June, the band was nominated for the KLove Fan Awards Group of the Year title, and in September, a documentary on the band, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise is scheduled for release. Empires, released in May 2015, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, repeating the achievement of the band’s third studio album, Zion on that U.S. chart. Zion also topped the Billboard Christian & Gospel album and digital charts. The new album also topped the U.S. Christian Albums chart becoming UNITED’s 5th No. 1 album in this category, following Zion in 2013, Aftermath in 2011, Across the Earth in 2009, and All of the Above in 2007. Empires made Worship Leader’s list of Top 20 Albums of 2015, coming in at No. 12. Charting on nine international charts, Empires topped the Australian Albums Chart, and it came in at No. 53 on the Australian Albums 2015 year-end chart. Every track made the top 50 on the U.S. Hot Christian Songs Chart with “Touch the Sky” leading the album’s tracks at No. 5. Houston receives credit for writing 11 of the album’s 12 tracks, either individually or in collaboration with others. He also is the worship leader on four of the tracks. Smith is worship leader on six of the tracks. Other band members receiving writing credits on Empires include Michael Guy Chislett, Matt Crocker, Ben Tennikoff and Dylan Thomas. Crocker, Jonathon Douglass and Jad Gillies also are worship leaders on Empires tracks. The third track on the album, “Heart Like Heaven,” was No. 6 on Worship Leader’s list of Top 20 Songs of 2015. Empires’ lead single, “Touch the Sky” was released in March of last year, and its second single, “Say the Word” was released this year in February. “Touch the Sky,” performed on the Today Show shortly after its release in 2015, peaked at No. 1 on the Christian Digital Songs Chart, No. 3 on the U.S. Christian Chart, No. 5 on the Christian Airplay Chart, and No. 8 on the Christian Streaming Songs Chart. Tracks from Empires include: o “Here Now (Madness)” o “Say the Word” o “Heart Like Heaven” o “Touch the Sky” o “Street Called Mercy” o “When I Lost My Heart to You (Hallelujah)” o “Even When It Hurts (Praise Song)” o “Prince of Peace” o “Empires” o “Rule” o “Captain,” and o “Closer Than You Know.” Continued on page 39

DRAKE’S SUMMER SIXTEEN TOUR BRINGS FUTURE, SPECIAL GUESTS TO STEEL CITY By: Pam Thompson

The Drake Summer Sixteen Tour with Future and special guests comes to Pittsburgh as part of a North American journey in support of Drake’s new album, Views. The tour also supports Future’s fourth studio album, EVOL, also released this year, as well as last year’s mixtape collaboration by Drake and Future, What a Time to Be Alive. The Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum selling Drake, in addition to Future, has lined up Roy Woods, dvsn, and other special guests to perform on the tour. It has been nearly three years since Drake’s last performance at CONSOL Energy Center when he brought his Would You Like a Tour? to Pittsburgh. That tour supported his album, Nothing Was the Same. Drake’s first two tours were Thank Me Later in 2010, and Take Care in 2011. Drake’s new tour plays Pittsburgh in August and continues into mid-October.

Views

Views was released this spring and by June, the album had logged four straight weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, making it the longest run at No. 1 on the chart for a man since 2012. In those early weeks, Views tracks generated more than one billion ondemand audio streams in the United States, leading other top streaming albums, such as Justin Bieber’s Purpose, and The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness, as well as Drake’s own, If You Are Reading This It’s Too Late. Views peaked at No. 1 on 11 charts around the world including Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Continued on page 42

The album's multi-platinum certified lead single, "Hotline Bling," became a hit reaching No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs and Billboard Rhythmic charts. Three of the album's subsequent singles, "Summer Sixteen," "Pop Style," and "One Dance," all made the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs charts with "One Dance" and "Pop Style" sitting at the No. 1 and No.3 spots respectively on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Digital Songs at the same time. By late May, 18 songs from Views charted on the Billboard Hot 100, a new record. Views tracks include: o “Keep the Family Close o “9” o “U With Me?” o “Feel No Ways” o “Hype” o “Weston Road Flows” o “Redemption” o “With You” featuring PartyNextDoor o “Faithful” featuring Pimp C and dvsn o “Still Here” o “Controlla” o “One Dance” featuring Wizkid and Kyla o “Grammys” featuring Future o “Childs Play” o “Pop Style” o “Too Good” featuring Rihanna o “Summers Over Interlude” o “Fire & Desire” o “Views,” and o “Hotline Bling,” the bonus track.

New Music

JOEL OSTEEN RETURNS WITH ‘A NIGHT OF HOPE’ By: Pam Thompson

"A Night of Hope" with Joel and Victoria Osteen comes to Pittsburgh | this summer. The event, an outreach of Joel Osteen Ministries, first came to CONSOL Energy Center five years ago. The night of praise and worship features an inspirational message from Osteen and his wife Victoria along with the music of the Lakewood Band and Ensemble. Osteen is the pastor of America¹s largest congregation, the 52,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. It is housed in the former Compaq Center. Each week, Osteen preaches in person to 38,000 church-goers. The 16,000seat arena is now the largest regularly used worship facility in the United States. Referred to as a pastor for a new generation, Osteen is considered by many as a voice of hope. He reaches one of the largest audiences in the United States and around the globe. Millions of people worldwide see Osteen’s weekly television broadcasts, his New York Times bestselling books, worship events, his popular weekly podcast, as well as social media where Joel Osteen Ministries has more than 13.6 million Facebook likes and the pastor has more than 4.5 million Twitter followers. market and viewed by seven million Americans each week. The weekly broadcasts also are seen in nearly 100 nations worldwide. Osteen’s first book, Your Best Life Now made its debut in 2004 and topped the New York Times Bestsellers List. It remained on the list for more than two years. His newest work, The Power of I Am: Two Words That Will Change Your Life Today, was released in 2015. Osteen did not begin preaching until he was 35. His father, John Osteen, a minister of the Gospel and the founder of Lakewood Church had frequently asked his son to give a sermon. The younger Osteen preferred to stay behind the scenes and declined his father’s requests to preach until January 1999. After studying radio and television communications at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., Osteen returned to Houston in 1982 and founded Lakewood's television ministry. He produced his father’s televised sermons for 17 years. Looking back, he says, “It was funny. My dad called that Monday and asked me to preach that Sunday like he had a thousand times before.” “I did it for my father,” and at the time Osteen thought that he had fulfilled a one-time request for his dad. It was the last Sunday of his father’s life. “When my Dad died, I took a step of faith” says Osteen, who preaches that God has a plan for every person. “I never dreamed it would lead to all it has led to.” In 2006, Osteen was named to Barbara Walters' list of the ten “Most Fascinating People” of the year. In the same year, he was selected as the "Most Influential Christian” of the year by the readers of Church Report Magazine. Lakewood Church grew and Osteen moved it into its present location in 2005. Osteen’s 12 books are offered in print, audio and electronic formats, as well as a half dozen languages. The New York Times best-selling author theorizes about what has caused people to flock to him and the Lakewood Church. He says: “I think that there’s the message that’s positive and hopeful…. Many things pull us down, like the economy and natural disasters. Our message is about hope…. It’s practical. Lots of churches are making their messages more practical.” He says, “My goals personally are to keep growing, learning and getting better at what I do.” Osteen’s “A Night of Hope” is scheduled in Pittsburgh on Aug. 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Our message is about hope…. It’s practical.

Kellogg’s Tour is always a lot of fun and a great way for Americans to celebrate the athletes’ performances at the Olympic Games.” “This is going to be the best show we have ever produced,” says Penny. “We will celebrate our athletes’ success in Rio, as well as what gymnastics means to kids and fans of all ages. This will be a special opportunity for fans across America to see the USA’s best-known and well-loved gymnasts.” “The stars of USA Gymnastics started every morning with a dream, hitting the gym and working to achieve their full potential. They have inspired and delighted fans with their hard work and dazzling performances,” says Jeremy Harper, senior director of marketing for Kellogg Morning Foods. “As an official sponsor, Kellogg’s is proud to help bring this incredible showcase to communities around the country. Maybe we’ll help inspire future gymnasts to start their own Olympic journey.” Biles, 19, who was too young to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, went pro in July 2015. She has achieved 14 world championship medals, including three consecutive all-around gold medals in 2013, 2014 and 2015. She holds the record for the most gold world championship medals won by a female gymnast. Douglas, Raisman and Wieber are three of the Fierce Five, the U.S. gold medal gymnastics team of the 2012 Olympics. Douglas became the first gymnast to win both the all-round and team gold in the same Olympics in 2012. She also was the first African-American gymnast to win the all-around gold. She was honored as the Associated Press Top Female Athlete of the Year for her accomplishments. Raisman captained the Fierce Five and became the first U.S. woman to win Olympic gold in the floor competition. Making the 2016 Olympic team would make the 22-year-old Raisman the oldest American gymnast to compete in the Olympics in 12 years. Leading up to 2016, only Dominique Dawes and Amy Chow, in 1996 and 2000 respectively, have made multiple Olympic gymnastics teams. Wieber retired following her contributions to the 2012 gold medal team. She begins her senior year at UCLA, a few weeks after this year’s Olympics. Working toward a psychology degree, she is team manager of UCLA’s women’s gymnastics team. As a pro, she was ineligible for the collegiate team. Wieber Continued on page 59

WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY For six Penguins players, plus head coach Mike Sullivan, the recent Stanley Cup Final against the San Jose Sharks was the first of two championships they’ll compete for in 2016. Beginning September 17, eight teams will vie to win the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, and many of the key figures from Pittsburgh’s 2016 playoff run will play important roles in that tournament. Captain Sidney Crosby will suit up for the two-time Olympic gold medal-winning Team Canada squad; Evgeni Malkinwill play for the Russians; Olli Maatta and Finland will look to build upon a bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics; Sweden will have a pair of hard-working forwards in Patric Hornqvist and Carl Hagelin; and Matt Murray will be one of three goaltenders on Team North America. Additionally, Sullivan will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA. Not only will the North American roster have Murray, but it will also feature Whitehall, Pa. native and Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson; Gibsonia’s Brandon Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion who now plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets; and New York Rangers forward J.T. Miller, who is from East Palestine, Ohio. Continued on page 64

Gibson, Saad and Miller all played youth hockey for the Pittsburgh Hornets travel program. Before the official tournament begins, hockey fans will have the chance to experience the World Cup up close, as CONSOL Energy Center will host an exhibition doubleheader on Sept. 14. The marquee matchup that day will be the nightcap between Canada and Russia at 7:30 p.m., a contest that will feature Crosby and Malkin playing against one another. Earlier that day, Team North America, which is comprised of the best players age 23 or under from the United States and Canada, takes on the Czech Republic at 3:30 p.m. All four teams will spend several days leading up to the exhibition games practicing both at CONSOL Energy Center and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa. Tickets for the doubleheader are on sale now at ticketmaster.com. In addition to Murray and the Pittsburgh kids, Team North America will have the top-two selections from the 2015 NHL Draft, centers Connor McDavid from the Edmonton Oilers and Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres, as well as the projected No. 1-overall pick in 2016, forward Auston Matthews, who skated for the Zurich SC Lions in the Swiss League this year. The six countries participating in the World Cup are the United States, Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic. Team North America is one of two teams not made up entirely of players from the same country. The other is Team Europe, which has players from all the remaining European countries. Penguins fans will have a chance to see some of the key figures from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs in the exhibition games at CONSOL Energy Center. | 64 |
