Pittsburgh Pride 2020 Partner Guide

Pittsburgh Pride 2020 will be held at Point State Park, July 17-19 Pittsburgh Pride is the largest community festival that celebrates the diversity of the region specifically for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community and its allies. It is the largest Pride event in Pennsylvania and the 3rd largest special event in the City of Pittsburgh with more than 250,000 attendees in 2019. In addition, the Pittsburgh Pride Parade is the largest annual parade in Pittsburgh. Unlike other events, Pittsburgh Pride is unique as it provides an opportunity to align your company externally with the LGBTQ community and internally with your company’s diversity and inclusion efforts. By joining us at Pittsburgh Pride, companies are demonstrating through their actions that the LGBTQ community is welcome and it gives your employees the ability to be proud of who they are and proud of who they work for. It’s a partnership that provides you access to the community not only during Pride, but throughout the entire year. The LGBTQ community continues to face many challenges. Pennsylvania still does not have state-wide, anti-discrimination laws protecting sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender equality. Our transgender community, especially transgender people of color, continue to face challenges when it comes to education, housing and employment. There’s a continual push with our medical community when it comes to providing LGBTQ culturally competent healthcare. And our wellness initiative, including PrEP education and access to testing in order to stop the spread of HIV and STI’s, has become a model for other cities across the U.S. Pittsburgh’s first Pride march took place on June 17, 1973, only four years after the Stonewall Riots in New York City. The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh, the region’s leading LGBTQ advocacy organization, has been proudly producing Pittsburgh Pride for the past 13 years and has grown the event from 2,800 people in 2007 to over 250,000 in 2019. If you believe in treating everyone with dignity, respect and inclusion, then we invite you to join us!

Pittsburgh Pride Changes Hearts & Minds

Founded in 1901 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, U. S. Steel and its 15,000 employees were proud, firsttime partners of Pittsburgh Pride in 2019. Under the theme “Pride as Strong as Steel,” the company created an internal marketing campaign that reinforced the message that in order to compete in today’s marketplace, diversity and inclusion must be demonstrated at all levels of the organization. We were thrilled to have President & CEO David Burritt, Senior VP & Chief Financial Officer Christine Breves, and Senior VP & Chief Human Resources Officer Barry Melnkovic join nearly 200 employees in the Pride Parade.

When a Hug Changes the World When Scott Dittman learned that his friend was going to the Pittsburgh Pride Parade to give out embraces with the LGBTQ advocacy group Free Mom Hugs, he thought that it would be nice to give out some dad hugs, too. “My first thought was well if you had a hundred moms and a hundred dads presented with a child that identified with this population, my thought was that the moms overall would likely be more accepting so possibly dad hugs could be even more needed,” Dittman told CNN So he ordered a shirt online -- with the words “Free Dad Hugs” in large print -- and headed from his home in Karns City, Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh for the annual gay pride parade on June 9. Dittman says he thought he’d be in for a fun day, with people celebrating and partying but he also knew there might be some people who needed dad hugs. But he didn’t expect the emotional embraces some people gave him or how his story, which went viral, would touch so many people all around the world. His story has brought families together who haven’t communicated in years. To date, the post has generated 374,000 reactions, 39,000 comments, and 266,000 shares. Estimated media impressions of the Free Dad Hugs story is close to 68 million impressions. And it happened at Pittsburgh Pride.

PARENTS. A handful of us went to the Pittsburgh Pride Parade today, sporting our FREE DAD HUGS and FREE MOM HUGS t-shirts. We gave out hundreds of hugs. Hundreds. Some were super happy hugs. But others were like these two... and there were way too many like them. Let me tell you about these two. He was kicked out at 19 when his parents found out. They haven’t spoken to him since. He cried on my shoulder. Sobbed. Squeezed me with everything he had. I felt a tiny bit of that pain that he carries with him every minute of every day. He was abandoned because of who he loves. And on June 9th, 2019, he was participating in a celebration of love when he was brought to his emotional knees by a shirt that said “FREE DAD HUGS” on a complete stranger. Her story? I don’t know the specifics. But I know that she saw me from across the street. I wasn’t paying attention. By the time she got to me, she had tears in her eyes. She stood in front of me and looked up at me, with a look of sadness and helplessness that I’ll never forget. She hugged me with everything she had. And I hugged her back. She held on for so long, melting into me, and thanked me endlessly. And I can’t stop thinking about her. What she must be going thru with her family... the ones who are supposed to be there for her no matter what. Who does she go to when she needs advice on love, money or just life? Who does she share old memories with that only her parents would have been there for? What are her holidays like? How often does she hope for that phone call, with unconditional love on the other end? I don’t know her story. But it doesn’t feel like a huge leap to assume she’s lost those who should love her the most and forever. Imagine that, parents. Imagine that your child feels SO LOST FROM YOU that they sink into the arms of a complete stranger and sob endlessly just because that stranger is wearing a shirt offering hugs from a dad. Think of the depths of their pain. Try to imagine how deep those cuts must be. Please don’t be the parent of a child that has to shoulder that burden. I met WAY too many of them, of all ages, today. And if by chance anyone knows these folks, please let them know they can reach out any time they need a surrogate dad to talk to. I’ll be there. #sparkkindness

The lost & found and first aid area will also be located here.

Showcase your brand at this popular area filled with an array of something for every taste bud as well as providing a place to sit and eat during the festival. Exclusive soda pouring rights are available with this sponsorship.

No one loves their pets more than the LGBTQ community! Bringing your dog to PrideFest is a popular and common sight and sponsoring the pet pop up area gives your brand the opportunity to get in front of pet owners as well as provide them with a much-needed respite from the hot pavement by providing a cool place to get some water and rest (for both the animal and the owner!)

Restroom Row Restrooms have been a primary talking point the past few months because of North Carolina’s HB2 bill which discriminates against people using the restroom based on the gender they identify. Companies like Target have taken the position that people should be able to use whichever restroom they feel most comfortable in which has lead them to huge positive brand recognition in the LGBTQ community. Sponsoring the restroom area at Pride with your brand would give your company a unique ability to not only promote that you too believe that people should be able to use any restroom they wish but could also create an interesting PR opportunity.

Entertainment Stages Pittsburgh Pride is reknown for its diverse line-up of entertainment. From our Pride Rocks PGH concert fundraiser to our free multi-day PrideFest festival, we invest in bringing local, regional and national entertainment in all forms to Pride to showcase their talents. From drag to dance and everything in between, this entertainment takes place on three stages throughout the festival. Sponsoring a stage gives your company the opportunity to align itself with one of the key features of the festival which will be seen by tens of thousands of people. Custom signage on the stage is available with this sponsorship.

Picnic Tables

Beverage Bars

Everyone who visits our Food Vendor Area will see your company name and logo when you participate in our picnic table sponsorship program. Custom branded stickers will be affixed to approximately 40 picnic tables giving you an unique and interesting branding opportunity!

Pittsburgh Pride is licensed to sell alcohol. Throughout Pride there are fully staffed, very popular bars with a wide array of offerings. Joining us with a sponsorship would give your company the opportunity to solidify your support of the LGBTQ community. Exclusive pouring rights for Pride and all Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh events throughout the year are included with this sponsorship. The beer, wine and soda categories are still available.

Relax & Recharge Area

ATMs

The Relax & Recharge area is a shaded place where people of all ages can take a break during the festival. This area is unique as it gives your company the opportunity to speak one on one with people as they sit for a bit, recharge their cell phone, or grab a cold beverage.

Having access to cash that is close and convenient is something we’ve heard is important to our visitors. In 2015, nearly $100,000 was dispensed over two days. Your company can be the “hero” and sponsor this busy area at Pittsburgh Pride.

Wellness Village

Trash/Recycling/Composting

In 2016, the first Wellness Village was set up at Pittsburgh Pride as part of a 6 month initiative, to encourage the community to get tested for HIV and STIs as well as start the conversation about PrEP, a pill that when taken daily prevents the spread of HIV. Sponsoring the Wellness Village not only will provide the opportunity for people to get tested for free, many of which don’t have access to resources where they live, but also provide them with life-saving education.

Studies show that attendees believe that LGBTQ rights and climate change are both human rights issues. The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh is committed to making Pittsburgh Pride a “zero waste” event and our efforts have been recognized by the Pennsylvania Resources Council. Your company can join us as a sponsor of this initiative which will promote a positive and responsible image to our attendees, vendors, and volunteers.
