from our Chairman

DEAR PNC POPS PATRONS,

Welcome to the opening of our 2011-2012 PNC Pops season! After returning to Pittsburgh from a phenomenal three-week tour of many of Europe’s most prestigious music festivals, we opened the season with our Gala concert, Musique du Monde, followed by two weekends of magnificent classical concerts. We also welcomed our newest members of the PSO: Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley, Principal Flute Lorna McGhee and Principal Timpanist Ed Stephan. Our orchestra comprises some of the most talented musicians in the world. They are also incredibly generous people, deeply committed to Pittsburgh and to their Orchestra. In June, we announced that the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra ratified a new three-year concessionary contract, effective September 2011. Not only did the musicians agree to a wage reduction and changes to their retirement plans, they also voted to make a donation of $100,000 per year to our Annual Fund during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons. Their actions further inspired the PSO board of trustees to increase their collective support to more than $1 million – a 30 percent increase over last season’s trustee giving. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our musicians and my fellow trustees for this outstanding level of commitment. Tonight, Marvin will be sharing some exciting news with you about the new Pops Artistic Excellence Fund. The PSO has been awarded a $250,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor to inspire Pops audiences to support the final phase of the Commitment to Excellence Campaign. We hope you will help us unlock every dollar of this challenge through your support, so that we can continue to bring you the high quality programming you expect and deserve. Thank you and enjoy tonight’s performance. Sincerely,

Richard P. Simmons Chairman, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

from our President from our Chairman and CEO

WELCOME TO THE 2011-2012 SEASON! WE HAVE SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE. The PSO promises yet another entertaining and enriching concert experience this season, from tonight’s sizzling Ballroom with a Twist to a celebration of the songs of the silver screen to a walk down memory lane with the legendary Gershwins. We also look forward to welcoming the inimitable Patti Lupone, violinist Natalie MacMaster and we are so fortunate to have Marvin Hamlisch celebrating his 17th season as our Principal Pops Conductor, on the podium this year for Highmark Holiday Pops. This season we are especially proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Heinz Hall. Home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since September 1971, Heinz Hall was the catalyst for Jack Heinz’s vision for creating a Cultural District downtown. In the past few weeks you may have seen our Hear Why the World Cheers television spots or heard us on the radio. This image awareness campaign is designed to educate the people of Southwestern PA about what all of you already know—the treasure that we have in our Orchestra. We hope that you will help us spread the word about this wonderful organization located right here in our own backyard! In these difficult economic times, the PSO remains dedicated to maintain the highest level of artistic quality, enabling you, our beloved and loyal patrons, to enjoy performances of the highest caliber by one of the world’s great orchestras. I am deeply appreciative of the wonderful example set by our musicians’ decision to take a 9.7 percent wage reduction in the first year and a wage freeze in the second year of the new contract, as well as contributing $100,000 per year to the PSO’s Annual Fund for the first two years. I thank you for your ongoing support of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Your support is vital and greatly appreciated by everyone at the PSO.

with her first solo album. “So Glad I’m Me." “So Glad I’m Me” resonates from start to finish, propelled by Jones’ expressive, full-bodied vocals. It’s the same arresting voice that electrified “American Idol” viewers with the “Dreamgirls” showstopper “And I Am Telling You” and later commanded the Broadway stage in Oprah Winfrey’s Tony Awardwinning musical “The Color Purple.” Whether Jones is delivering a gut-tugging ballad, a beat-infused party jam or a spiritual uplift, her voice never loses its soul-stirring fervor. Helping Jones craft her musical message were hit-making songwriter/producers Tony Nicholas (Patti LaBelle, Gerald Levert, Luther Vandross), Ro & Sauce (Brandy, Ne-Yo), Greg Curtis (Keyshia Cole, Yolanda Adams). Jones’ motivation and mesmerizing style date back to her childhood in Flint. Raised by her mother and grandmother, she was exposed to such legendary singers as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. Singing in chorale groups and a cappella choruses through high school, she entered and won the top prize at Flint’s local talent contest, “The Super Show,” in 1997. A two-year stint studying vocal performance at the University of Michigan left the high school graduate wanting to sing more than hit the books. But an eventual move to Baltimore proved a second time can be the charm. Having heard her sing on the job and at local events, Jones’ was encouraged to drive to New York to audition for the 2007 season of “American Idol.” It was while performing on the “American Idol” tour that Jones received a call to audition for “The Color Purple.” She anticipates more acting and singing roles on Broadway, TV and films, recording a gospel album and establishing a foundation to provide resources and support for single moms. But first up is winning more fans with “So Glad I’m Me.”

singer/songwriter, David Hernandez, gained national attention with his powerful voice and affable personality as an American Idol finalist. He was honored to share the stage with Jamie Foxx, John Legend and Maroon 5, along with event hosts Jessica Alba and legendary TV producer, Norman Lear. David counts Stevie Wonder, Ne-yo, Donnie Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson and David Foster among his musical influences. LOUIS VAN AMSTEL – was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on Friday morning June, 23rd 1972. Even though I was born in the city I lived my childhood in a very small town outside of Amsterdam.

6

My dance life started at the age of 10 after my family decided it was important for my social skills to learn ballroom dancing. My grandparents were competitive ballroom dancers so it didn’t come as a surprise to many that I should follow in their footsteps. I learned to love competitive ballroom dancing because winning competitions gave me confidence, and I realized how competitive I actually was. Dancing gave me the opportunity to express feelings without saying a word and I also experienced it as therapy to deal with many emotional obstacles throughout my childhood. From the age of 15 I was traveling abroad representing my country in major dance competitions in both Ballroom and Latin. Those early international years gave me a lot of experience and the realization that if I wanted to make it big I needed to take risks and make major life altering decisions. I had to get an international partner, move to England and therefore stop traditional school. My mentor/coach, Ruud Vermey PhD and I convinced my parents (not sure if I didn’t want to finish school because of my career or just the excitement of not having to go anymore..lol) to permit me to terminate high school at 16 to pursue my dance career. My parents were torn, because they wanted me to finish my education. I totally agree now as an adult, but in hindsight I thank them and my school principal on my knees that they let me go. I took a huge risk by supporting my decision, because I was still under age. When I became world champion in 1994 that school principal who supported my decision was invited to the celebration party and in his speech he said “I could have lost my job over the decision to let you leave high school early, but now I’m so happy I did knowing you reached your dream. Your country is proud of you.” During the summer of 1989 I started a whole new rollercoaster in my life with my beloved British dance partner, Julie Fryer. It started as a crazy fast career boost. We learned, laughed, triumphed, lost, gained, cried, split up, got together again. Doors opened and closed, but with blood, sweat, and tears I found my intuition was my life saver on many occasions. Sometimes following your gut is more important than listening to others. I did and it helped me make life changing decisions when times got rough. With intu-

ition I felt my passion and love for dance made me happy and I became more sincere in my expression in dance and life. After three world Latin Dance championship gold medals in 1994, 1995 and 1996 I fulfilled more than one dream and was so appreciative for all of my blessings. I still felt an urge to do more. From my earliest age I was always been cross trained in many forms of dance and was educated in choreography as well , by my mentor, Ruud Vermey. I wanted to explore the world of bringing Ballroom Dance mixed with other forms of dance to the theater world. When I first came to NYC in 1991 I fell in love with the city. I told my friends that when I retired from competitive dancing in my late thirties I wanted to move to New York City. Well, as fate would have it I stopped competing at 26 and moved to New York City in June of 1997. I took the risk and followed my intuition once more. I packed my two suitcases, bought a ticket and moved to the Big Apple leaving my home country. A new chapter of my life had begun, and I had no idea what was in store for me. In that summer I had the pleasure of working with many amazingly talented dancers many of whom are now known to you as my colleagues on Dancing With The Stars. Not only was I coaching Tony Dovolani, Karina Smirnoff, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and his brother Val since my early days in NYC, but we became close friends. Now working on Dancing With The Stars together is amazing, especially since we have all known each other for so long.

His performances have also been seen in numerous films and television shows. Of all the roles, all the assignments and all the hats he has worn in all the many shows, his all-time favorite remains the role of husband to his beloved wife, Jennifer and father to his cherished daughter, Michelle. And today, more than thirty-five years after it all began, that love affair with the American Theatre is still going strong. I

2011-2012 SEASON

In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a robust Endowment to assure its financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment account to provide for the PSO's future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the PSO in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra through their estate plans. Members of the Sid Kaplan Tribute program have made a planned gift to the endowment of $10,000 or more to commemorate a particular person or event. Endowed Naming Opportunities for guest artists, musicians' chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or tribute for ten years, twenty years or in perpetuity. For additional information, call 412.392.3320.

FOR MORE INFORMATION AT CONCERTS: Penny Vennare, Event Supervisor; Tina Castrodale, Concierge; Ron Ogrodowski, Concierge. 44 pittsburghsymphony.org

Can I organize a group for a concert? Absolutely. With a group ticket purchase you receive discounted tickets, priority seats, personalized service and free reception space. For more information, call 412.392.4819 or visit our website at pittsburghsymphony.org/groups

What time should I arrive for concerts? You may want to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to concert start time to allow time for parking, entering the hall and finding your seat. BNY Mellon Grand Classics patrons have the opportunity to attend Concert Preludes, which begin one hour before the concert in the auditorium. What should I wear to concerts? There is no official dress code for events in Heinz Hall. Many patrons wear business attire, and many prefer to be more casual. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.

May I bring my children? Introducing small children to music is important to the PSO and we welcome young children to our youth concerts and Fiddlesticks Family Series. Children, approximately age six and over, are welcome at all performances with a purchased ticket. The Latecomer’s Gallery and lobby video monitors are always options for restless children. May I take pictures? All still and video photography, or audio recording are strictly prohibited at all times.

How will I find parking? Pittsburgh’s Cultural District can be very busy but guaranteed prepaid parking is available to all ticketholders in the Sixth & Penn garage across from Heinz Hall. Ask about prepaid parking when you order your tickets.

What can I do to support the PSO? Your ticket purchase supports the PSO and we thank you! However, ticket sales only cover a portion of our operating costs. To make a tax-deductible gift to the PSO, contact our Donor Relations department at 412.392.4880 or visit us online at pittsburghsymphony.org How can I get someone from the PSO to speak at our event? The volunteers of the Speakers Bureau would like to share their passion for the PSO with the community by providing a speaker for you and your organization. If you are interested, please call 412.392.2235.
