Dearest friends,

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Good evening and welcome to Heinz Hall, home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Tonight is the night. Chandeliers have been dusted. Reeds checked. Bows rosined. As the sun sets, Heinz Hall fills with friendship and fashion. First-time visitors and long-time listeners, we come together from across our region to celebrate what makes Pittsburgh and the PSO so special. We are the home of hard work, open hearts and world-class talent. Whether you are a neighbor from aroundthe-corner or from around-the-world, we are grateful you choose to spend your evening with us tonight. Together, we are forging the future of classical music and championing the role of the arts in American life and culture.

We begin our season, fresh from a tremendous European Tour. The musicians of the PSO enthralled audiences across the continent, from the Salzburg Festival to the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to the Vienna Konzerthaus. As cultural ambassadors, the PSO proudly represents not only our city and Pennsylvania but also our country on the world stage. Join us in welcoming our hometown musical heroes back to the stage in Heinz Hall. Our expectant ears are eager to enjoy the energy and vitality they cultivated on tour.

For this year’s annual Gala, we have the rare honor of hosting legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman. Tonight, as we enjoy his singular musical talent, we also celebrate his commitment to music education and to encouraging and inspiring the next generation of musicians. The leadership of Mr. Perlman and his wife Toby show us what is possible when we commit to long-term investment in our most valuable resource – our students, teachers and children.

We take pride in the PSO’s role as a catalyst for learning development. PSO-affiliated musicians teach in over 75 higher education institutions worldwide and mentor and teach students in youth performance groups and community schools throughout our region. Inspired by the educational impact of Mr. Perlman, we are excited to work with you, our community of supporters and donors, to establish Heinz Hall as a hub for music learning.

Via your gifts tonight, we have raised over $1 million to sustain our vital and essential Learning and Engagement initiatives. These include Schooltime programming, the Lift Every Voice concert celebrating Black American music, Sensory Friendly initiatives, Fiddlesticks Musical Exploration, and our Student Side-by-Side program.

This year, we are excited to launch two expansions of our Schooltime program. Schooltime On The Road brings the full orchestra to schools outside of Allegheny County that, due to distance, are unable to bring their students to Heinz Hall. Digital Schooltime makes learning resources from the PSO available, free of charge, to classrooms around the world. We are also launching PSO Go, our new discounted ticket program for students and teachers. With your help, the PSO is establishing a new standard for equitable and accessible music learning in Allegheny County that

will serve students throughout the region and the globe.

To all with us tonight, we are so glad you are here. You are the first of what will be over 250,000 patrons who will spend time with the PSO this year. Your collective effort helps the PSO champion economic opportunity and development to the tune of $125 million in annual economic impact, sustaining 1900 jobs in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

Thank you for joining us this evening. Catch up with old colleagues. Make some new friends, and enjoy this very special performance.

With gratitude, joy and warm wishes,

SUPPORT THE OPENING NIGHT GALA

PSO IN OUR COMMUNITY

Sponsored by The Dorrance Family

It’s simple: we love Pittsburgh, and are lucky to be a part of it! While we’re fortunate to call Heinz Hall our home of more than 50 years, we also love to visit other neighborhoods or try new venues and programs beyond our hall and the Cultural District.

This past May, we began Schooltime on the Road by visiting Sharon and Laurel Highlands High Schools, a program we’ve made into a permanent pillar of our Schooltime program. We also launched Digital Schooltime to reach students globally, providing teachers with our free Schooltime programs and learning resources by registering online. In July, Fiddlesticks performed at Mars and Moon High Schools.

We continued the tradition of performing at Allegheny Parks’ Summer Concerts Series in Hartwood Acres and South Park, and walked over to Fort Duquesne Boulevard in early June to perform as a part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival. We also returned to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall for our annual Americana Concert, and to the O’Reilly Theater for our second summer of Summer Shorts with a brief concert of summery Italian music, La Dolce Vita.

Next weekend, we’ll make the trip to Morgantown, WV to perform with Augustin Hadelich during parent’s weekend at WVU, and later in the season we’ll return to St. Vincent College, where we led The Messiah last December.

Here’s to continuing to push the boundaries of artistic expression and innovation as you embark on the 2024-2025 season.

The arts aren’t a luxury — they’re a core part of what makes our communities vibrant and alive. As a company committed to building a better world, we’re proud to support the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Bravo to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on an exciting “Schooltime” and “Schooltime on the Road” season ahead. One of our greatest legacies, for more than 80 years Schooltime concerts have ensured that students of all ages have access to music education with our world-renowned orchestra. The educational impact and utter joy of a Schooltime concert lasts a lifetime.

The Paul J. Ross Fellowship Program enables musicians identifying as Black or African American to dedicate themselves over a two-year period to the pursuit of an orchestral career. Fellows work closely alongside members of the Pittsburgh Symphony to train and prepare for professional auditions and opportunities, with substantial financial and professional development support, and robust mentorship in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The Paul J. Ross Fellowship (formerly known as OTPAAM) honors the late Paul J. Ross, the violinist who, in 1965, became the first African American musician to receive a full-time contract from the Pittsburgh Symphony. Paul J. Ross’s legacy is notable for nurturing, mentoring, and supporting young musicians, and his devotion to sharing his joy of music. The fellowship program began in the 2007-2008 season to promote excellence in orchestra settings and better reflect the communities and audiences the Orchestra serves.

The new Paul J. Ross Fellows that will begin in the 24/25 season are Landon Young, horn, and Carlos Clark, bassoon. The addition of these two new musicians brings the total number of Paul J. Ross Fellows to four for the 24/25 season, as Joshua Carr, trumpet, and Drew Collins, bass, continue their fellowships.

The Paul J. Ross Fellowship is made possible, in part, thanks to generous funding from the PA Department of Education with support from State Senator Camera Bartolotta; Arts, Equity, & Education Fund; the National Endowment for the Arts; and Hans & Leslie Fleischner.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is grateful to EQT Foundation for their generous support of the Paul J. Ross Fellowship.

Itzhak Perlman

The Heinz Endowments applauds the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for hosting Itzhak Perlman because of his artistry and honoring him because of his commitment to music education and investment in the next generation of musicians. We recognize Mr. Perlman’s efforts reflect our symphony’s own dedication to music education in the Pittsburgh region, and we appreciate the opportunity to celebrate the work of both at the PSO opening night gala.

The PSO’s annual Maestro’s Wine Dinner was created in 2014 as an evening of great wine, food, music and friendship. Held each year at the Duquesne Club, the event co-chairs craft an evening featuring exclusive wine paired with an incredible meal. This event features a performance from a chamber group of PSO Musicians, a silent and live auction with one-of-a-kind items.

Save the date of April 23, 2025. If you love wine, food and music, this event would be perfect for you.

The PSO started Parties of Note nearly two decades ago when generous hosts opened up their homes for a private concert. The PSO works with the hosts to craft a guest list for their private concert with a chamber ensemble of PSO Musicians or a PSO Guest Artist.

Notable PSO guest artists who have performed at

Parties of Note include Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, Behzod Abduraimov, Beatrice Rana, Marvin Hamlisch and Sarah Chang just to name a few.

If you are interested in hosting a party on behalf of the PSO at your home, we would love to hear from you.

MANFRED HONECK

Manfred Honeck has firmly established himself as one of the world’s leading conductors, whose distinctive and revelatory interpretations receive great international acclaim. He is in his 17th season as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where his contract runs through the 2027-2028 season. Celebrated at home and abroad, he and the orchestra continue to serve as cultural ambassadors for the city of Pittsburgh. Together, they have continued a legacy of musicmaking that includes several Grammy nominations and a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. Their regular appearances abroad have taken them to the major European music capitals and leading festivals such as the BBC Proms in London, Musikfest Berlin, Lucerne Festival, and the Salzburg Festival.

Born in Austria, Manfred Honeck received his musical training at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Many years of experience as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra have given his conducting a distinctive stamp. He began his career as assistant to Claudio Abbado and was subsequently engaged by the Zurich Opera House, where he was bestowed the prestigious European Conductor’s Award. Following early posts at MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, he served as Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm and as Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Apart from his much-acclaimed work in Pittsburgh, he is also high in demand as guest conductor, performing with all leading orchestras around the globe.

ITZHAK PERLMAN

Beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world who respond not only to his remarkable artistry, but also to his irrepressible joy for making music.

Having performed with every major orchestra and at concert halls around the globe, Mr. Perlman was granted a Presidential Medal of Freedom – the Nation’s highest civilian honor – by President Obama in 2015, a National Medal of Arts by President Clinton in 2000, and a Medal of Liberty by President Reagan in 1986. He is joined by Emanuel Ax, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the Juilliard String Quartet in Itzhak Perlman and Friends appearing in select venues. He continues touring An Evening with Itzhak Perlman, and plays recitals across North America with pianist Rohan De Silva in their 25th anniversary season.

Over the past thirty years, Mr. Perlman has been devoted to music education, mentoring gifted young string players alongside his wife Toby in the Perlman Music Program. With close to 800 alumni, PMP is shaping the future landscape of classical music worldwide.

THE PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Now in its 129th season, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is credited with a rich history of engaging the world’s finest conductors and musicians and demonstrates a genuine commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Known for its artistic excellence for more than a century, the Pittsburgh Symphony has been led by its worldwide acclaimed Music Director Manfred Honeck since 2008; past music directors have included Fritz Reiner (19381948), William Steinberg (1952-1976), André Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and Mariss Jansons (1997-2004). The Orchestra has always been at the forefront of championing new works, including recent commissions by Mason Bates, Stacy Garrop, James MacMillan, Wynton Marsalis, Jessie Montgomery and Julia Wolfe, in addition to performing the premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” in 1944 and John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” in 1986.The two-time 2018 GRAMMY® Award-winning orchestra has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and live radio broadcasts. Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra have received multiple GRAMMY® nominations for Best Orchestral Performance, taking home the award in 2018 for their recording of Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5; Barber: Adagio. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony has been broadcast on the radio. The

orchestra has received increased attention since 1982 through national network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International, produced by Classical WQED-FM 89.3, made possible by the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Lauded as the Pittsburgh region’s international cultural ambassador, the orchestra began regular touring in 1896 and has embarked on scores of domestic and international tours. In the summer of 2022, Music Director Manfred Honeck led the orchestra on an extensive and highly acclaimed tour of Europe, celebrating 75 years of international touring for the Orchestra.

In 2020, the Pittsburgh Symphony welcomed Principal Pops Conductor, Byron Stripling, only the second person in that role in the Orchestra’s history, following Marvin Hamlisch. A conductor, trumpet virtuoso, singer, and actor, Stripling has been a featured soloist with pops orchestras across the country. He has performed with jazz notables from the Count Basie Orchestra and the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, and more. Since his first concert as Principal Pops Conductor (an online performance in October 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic), he has continued to lead many Pops concerts and Learning & Engagement programs such as Fiddlesticks and Schooltime.

LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS

Schooltime – At Heinz Hall and On the Road!

The PSO’s dynamic Schooltime concerts inspire musical curiosity, skill-building, and knowledge among PreK-12 learners in the Pittsburgh region and beyond. These interactive performances introduce students to the orchestra and build the foundation for a lifelong love of music.

During the 2023-2024 school year, over 21,000 students and their teachers traveled to Heinz Hall to attend Schooltime – meeting and surpassing pre-pandemic attendance levels for the first time. With participation from 190 different schools across 18 counties, Schooltime continues to be one of the PSO’s widest-reaching efforts in advancing music literacy across Western Pennsylvania. The 2023-2024 season included several exciting firsts, including the world premiere performance of Peter Boyer’s Elegy for English Horn, Harp, and String Orchestra; the long-awaited Pittsburgh premiere of Mason Bates’s fabulous multimedia concerto Philharmonia Fantastique, with animation by Disney-Pixar’s Jim Capobianco; the Pittsburgh premiere of “Hold On” by Margaret Bonds; and the Heinz Hall debuts of dancer Yoshiaki Nakano and actor Charles Timbers.

With your help, the PSO also advanced its strategic goals of access and inclusion by expanding the Schooltime bus transportation fund to increase participation with Pittsburgh Public Schools, adding ASL interpretation at select Schooltime concerts across the season, and capturing two concerts for the new Digital Schooltime platform that launched in August 2024.

Capping off the PSO’s access and inclusion efforts was the start of “Schooltime on the Road,” featuring two runout performances of Schooltime’s popular Meet the Orchestra concert program. Led by PSO Associate Conductor Jacob Joyce, the full orchestra traveled to Sharon City School District in Sharon, PA (Mercer County) and Laurel Highlands School District students in Uniontown, PA (Fayette County). The concerts were extremely well received in both communities and marked an important expansion of the Schooltime program to reach students who are not typically able to come to Heinz Hall. Thanks to the generous support of the PSO donor family, Schooltime on the Road will continue in 2024-2025 with performances in Butler and Greene counties.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT SCHOOLTIME:

“This is a FANTASTIC opportunity for students to learn about the orchestra, hear a world-class symphony (for FREE!!!), and is organized in a way that is teacher-friendly and supports the curriculum! What a great way to build life-long lovers of music!"

Fiddlesticks Musical Exploration is the PSO’s flagship family series designed to introduce children ages 3-8 and their families to the wonderful world of orchestra music. Starring Fiddlesticks (the PSO’s music ambassador cat), vocalist Katy Williams, and the full orchestra, these Saturday morning events include an orchestra concert, hands-on activities with community partners, and a chance to meet Fiddlesticks and his friends after each performance.

The PSO debuted a refreshed Fiddlesticks brand in 2023-2024, created in collaboration with local artist Emily Marko. Principal Pops Conductor Byron Stripling made his Heinz Hall Fiddlesticks debut with a toe-tapping celebration of the music of George Gershwin; dancers from Attack Theatre imagined the movements of the animals featured in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals; and concertgoers young and old dressed up in their favorite Halloween costumes for a day of “Boo-tiful Music.”

This season Fiddlesticks invites all to join him for a musical exploration of the world around us, including the natural world, the human-made world, and the world of our imagination.

Student side-by-side

The Pittsburgh Symphony is proud to nurture the next generation of orchestra musicians through its Student Side-by-Side program. This 8-week learning experience is reserved exclusively for high school instrumentalists and provides the opportunity to work with PSO conductors, receive coaching from PSO musicians, and connect with music-loving peers from across the region. The program culminates in a full orchestra concert alongside the PSO on the Heinz Hall stage.

Thanks to your generous support, Student Side-by-Side is provided at no cost to all participants. In 2023-2024, 54 students from 32 high schools and 12 counties participated under the leadership of PSO Associate Conductor Moon Doh. We hope you will join us in celebrating our community’s talented student musicians at the next Student Side-by-Side concert: April 2, 2025, at 7:30 p.m.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is a national leader for its Sensory Friendly initiative, first introduced in 2015 and one of the earliest programs of its kind in the orchestra field. The PSO’s Sensory Friendly initiative provides inclusive and accessible music experiences for patrons of all ages and abilities, especially those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and with disabilities that create sensory sensitivities. The initiative provides Sensory Friendly accommodations at all Fiddlesticks and Schooltime events, as well as one fully modified orchestra concert each year.

In 2023-2024, the PSO presented Sensory Friendly Holiday Pops, featuring conductor Daniel Meyer, vocalist Melinda Doolittle, the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre dancers. The festive family event also included pre-concert activities with community partners from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, the Creative & Expressive Arts team from UMPC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and student volunteers from University of Pittsburgh, as well as opportunities to meet guest artists (and Santa!) after the concert. Occupational therapy expert Roger Ideishi provided professional development for all PSO staff and musicians to help our organization stay on the leading edge of this meaningful work.
