2011-2012 SEASON
SEPTEMBER 10, 1971: HEINZ HALL OPENS ITS DOORS The opening night for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in its newly-renovated home was full of celebration fitting to the grandeur of the building itself. September 10, 1971 marked the 45th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Symphony and the 20th year of William Steinberg’s role at the helm of the Orchestra. Before the opening event, sub-

scriptions for the 1971-72 season were sold out! The festive evening was celebrated with ceremony and pageantry: flowers adorned the tables and hallways; dinners were held for guests; champagne was served to all; and above all, world-class music was performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The entire city of Pittsburgh was celebrating the opening of its new performing arts center and the nation took notice. A thousand of the 2,847 guests were

invited to H.J. “Jack” and Drue Heinz’s intimate dinner party in the main ballroom of the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel. In attendance at the dinner were such friends as Henry and Elsie Hillman, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mellon, Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Mellon, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Benedum, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Peck and composer Samuel Barber. Although the Hilton was only two blocks from the new venue, Mr. Heinz provided his guests with air-conditioned buses to transport them to the red carpet rolled out in front of the entrances to the Hall. Members of the National Council on the Arts, including chairwoman Nancy Hanks, deputy chairman Michael Straight, Marian Anderson, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Maurice Abravanel, conductor and director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, concert pianist Rudolf Serkin, Peter Mennin, director of the Juilliard School, and sculptor Richard Hunt, among others, attended the opening night’s events, despite the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opening the same week a little closer to home. The inaugural concert of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in its new home of
W.F. and Mrs. Rockwell (left) with Henry L. Hillman (right).
Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts began at 8:40 p.m. and concluded at 10:45 p.m. The dedication address was given by Henry L. Hillman. The oboe sounded an ‘A,’ Maestro Steinberg arrived at the podium and the first notes of Beethoven’s Overture to Consecration of the House rang throughout the new concert hall. Samuel Barber’s Fadograph of a Yestern Scene, commissioned by the Alcoa Foundation for the occasion, followed the Overture. Prior to intermission, Maestro Steinberg led the PSO in the first movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor, “Resurrection,” with the rest of the work to follow after intermission. Soloists for the evening were Joanna Simon, mezzo-soprano, and Benita Valente, soprano. The Pennsylvania State University Chorus, directed by Raymond Brown, completed the necessary forces for such a momentous piece, aptly chosen for the resurrection of a world-class concert hall from the “ashes” of Penn Theatre.

MARVIN HAMLISCH LAST CONDUCTED THE PSO IN DECEMBER 2011.
marvin hamlisch Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. As a composer, Hamlisch has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize. He is the composer of many motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three , Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger and his latest effort The Informant! (September 2009) starring Matt Damon, and directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Marvin Hamlisch holds the position of Principal Pops Conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony and San Diego Symphony. Hamlisch was Musical Director and arranger of Barbra Streisand’s 1994 concert tour of the U.S. and England as well as of the television special, “Barbra Streisand: The Concert” (for which he received two of his Emmys). Hamlisch is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and Queens College (where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree). He believes in the power of music to bring people together. “Music can make a difference. There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together. Music is truly an international language, and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can.” pittsburghsymphony.org 15
2011-2012 SEASON
Dave Koz
In a career that spans 20 years and a dozen albums, saxophonist Dave Koz has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary music. As noteworthy as his body of recorded work and as entertaining his live performances and other past accomplishments might be, Koz finds himself in an era of dramatic and sweeping change where everything once taken for granted is suddenly up for grabs. Koz embraces this era of change, on Hello Tomorrow, his first album for Concord Records. Released in October 2010, Hello Tomorrow debuted at number one on both Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and iTunes’ Jazz Album chart and was named the “Best Smooth Jazz Album of 2010” by iTunes. Hailed as “an event record” by The New York Times, it has already yielded two number one singles: “Put The Top Down,” which spent 18 weeks at number one on the Mediabase Smooth A/C chart (the longest stint at number one of any of Koz’s chart-topping hits) and “Anything’s Possible.” Produced by Grammy winners John Burk and Marcus Miller (who also appears on most tracks), Hello Tomorrow features a diverse army of high-profile guests: Herb Alpert, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Sheila E., Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Keb’ Mo’, Ray Parker, Jr., Lee Ritenour, Christian Scott and others. Each of the 13 tracks, most of them written by Koz and his collaborators, others penned by friends and legends, focuses on being open to new beginnings, and trusting that the future is unfolding in all the right ways for all the right reasons. “I’m excited to be with a new record label after nearly 20 years,” says Koz, “but it’s reflective of a larger change for me personally, and there’s always some apprehension that comes with big changes. The more people I talk to, the more I realize that there are millions of people with a similar story – the loss of a job in an economic downturn, the end of a marriage, the beginning of a new career, any circumstances that force them to take a step in a different direction or reinvent themselves in some way. They’re reaching a certain point where they see a life ahead of them that they 16 pittsburghsymphony.org
never expected. Many of us are at the beginning of a new era, and we’d be wise to embrace it.” The project has been a guiding force for Koz, and could be the same for longtime fans and newcomers alike. “I made this album partly as a means to help myself through this unfamiliar time,” he says. “Hopefully it could be a tool to help anyone else in a similar situation.” Music, and more specifically, the saxophone, have been Koz’s primary survival tools since his childhood and adolescence in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley. He started playing as a means to land a spot in his brother’s band, but somewhere along the way, “the saxophone became my best friend, my most trusted ally, because it enabled me to communicate feelings that I didn’t have the words for. In many ways, it saved my life.” After earning a degree in mass communications from UCLA, Koz took the leap into a career as a professional musician – a decision that immediately led to touring gigs with vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bobby Caldwell, keyboardist Jeff Lorber and pop singer Richard Marx. He signed with Capitol and released his self-titled solo debut in 1990. Noteworthy follow-ups included the gold certified Lucky Man (1993), Off the Beaten Path (1996) and four holiday albums – December Makes Me Feel This Way (1997), Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Jazz Christmas (2001) Memories of a Winter’s Night (2007), and Ultimate Christmas (2011). The gold certified The Dance (1999) and Saxophonic (2003) each spawned five top five hits on the contemporary jazz charts, and the latter album scored two Grammy nominations. In addition to the 2007 Christmas album, Koz also released At the Movies that same year. Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, At the Movies spent 12 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart and scored a second Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album. A year later, Koz followed up with Dave Koz at the Movies Double Feature CD + DVD. Contemporary Jazz Albums chart as well as iTunes’ Jazz Album chart. The album included several of Koz’s hits plus four new tracks. In addition to compiling an ambitious discography, Koz continues to flex his masscommunications muscles as a radio personality in two outlets. On weekdays, he hosts an afternoon radio program that’s nationally distributed on the Smooth Jazz Radio Network; and on weekends, he hosts the syndicated Dave Koz Radio Show, now in its sixteenth year, in approximately 120 markets. Koz also keeps a hand in various other entrepreneurial and philanthropic ventures. He is the founder of Rendezvous Records, and has served for 18 years as global ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with chronic and lifethreatening illnesses and life-altering injuries. He recently partnered with Vinum Cellars, a Napa Valley boutique winery, and Whole Foods Market to introduce three types of KOZ wines. The wines are available exclusively at
Whole Foods Market stores in California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada, with all proceeds going directly to the Starlight Foundation. He recently completed a four-year term on the Grammy Foundation Artists Committee, has served as national trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), and is an ongoing member of the Board of Governors for the Grammy Foundation. Koz keeps busy on the road with annual summer and holiday tours. The Dave Koz & Friends Smooth Jazz Christmas Tour entered its fourteenth season in 2011, and he will be hosting the next Dave Koz and Friends at Sea Cruise to Europe aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas in 2012.

Gregg Karukas
Keyboardist/Composer Gregg Karukas' 11 solo CDs have garnered consistently solid reviews for his signature piano touch, pristine production, and melodies that are both soulful and sophisticated. “GK” is his latest project on Trippin Records. In addition to being one of the few smooth jazz artists that writes and produces his own solo projects, Gregg has a solid track record contributing to the careers of many others over his three decades on the contemporary jazz and TV/film music scene as producer, songwriter/arranger, musical director and keyboardist. His latest high profile gig: musical director and keyboardist for the sold-out Dave Koz and Friends Music Cruises to Alaska (2011) and Europe (2012). Since moving to Los Angeles from the Washington, DC area in the early 80s, Gregg has recorded and toured with everyone from Sergio Mendes to The Rippingtons (he was a founding member), Rockwell, Larry Carlton, George Benson, Richard Elliot, Dori Caymmi, Peter White, Kirk Whalum, Paul Brown, Melissa Manchester, Jessy J. (he co-wrote and arranged Jessy’s #1 hit, “Tropical Rain”), Brenda Russell, and The Jazzmasters Tribute. Gregg has received multiple best keyboardist nominations at the Oasis and National Smooth Jazz Awards and his radio hits include: #1 “Nightshift,” #1 “Summerhouse,” #4 “Blue Touch” and #4 “Girl in the Red Dress.” Gregg spent his early years close to the jukebox in his father's roadside tavern in Bowie, MD absorbing the hits of the sixties — from The Beatles to Motown, Stevie Wonder, then singer/songwriters like Carole King, James Taylor, Leon Russell, Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. “I was inspired by the idea that you could touch people's emotions with melodic songs and lyrics that meant something.” At age 17, right out of Bowie High School, Gregg joined with Pittsburgh native Tim Eyermann, the former lead alto player with The Air Force Airmen of Note to form East Coast Offering, where he honed his compositional skills and jazz chops in "jazz lounges” up and down the coast. They quickly became Washington, DC’s top original 18 pittsburghsymphony.org

crossover group — opening shows at the famous Cellar Door for artists such as Angela Bofil, Larry Carlton, The Robben Ford Band (pre-Yellowjackets — this is where Gregg first met Russell Ferrante), Jeff Lorber (w/Kenny Gorelick....G.), and many others. As a key player in the emergent LA Smooth Jazz scene, Gregg’s early bands and CDs included young undiscovered sax talents Dave Koz, Gary Meek and yes, Boney James, before his breakout Warner Brothers deal. His long-time associations with these and other contemporary artists such as Rick Braun, Peter White, Brazilian guitarists Ricardo Silveira and Dori Caymmi, Richard Elliot, singers Shelby Flint and Brenda Russell, Paul Brown, newcomer Jessy J. and many more are evidence of his solid place in the all-star realm. “People say my music sounds romantic and uplifting — and I look so happy on stage,” he says. “It's totally true. For me, the best music comes out of an inner feeling of either intense happiness or sadness. I always try to stay faithful to that original inspiration, because that is where the true ‘sound of emotion’ comes from.” That uplifting attitude shows in his concerts, as Karukas has emerged over the years as one of the genre's most dynamic and inspiring live performers since he first took the stage at the 1987 Catalina Jazz Festival with the original Rippingtons.

Chef Andrew Morrison
Andrew Morrison joined Fairmont Pittsburgh as executive chef prior to the hotel’s opening in March 2010. In his role, Chef Morrison oversees all food and beverage operations at the Four Diamond property, including Habitat, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Morrison uses his commonsense approach to cooking throughout Habitat’s internationally-inspired menu: a focus on high quality seasonal and local ingredients simply prepared to highlight the natural flavors. A native of Cheshire, England, Morrison is classically French-trained and began working in kitchens as a teenager. Prior to joining Fairmont Pittsburgh, Morrison served as executive sous chef at the Four Seasons Atlanta, Georgia’s only Five Star, Five Diamond hotel. From 2004-2006, Morrison worked as executive sous chef at the Four Seasons Miami. While in Florida, Morrison also served as private chef for both Musha Cay, an exclusive private island-resort in the Bahamas, and Little Whale Cay. In New York City from 1999-2004, Morrison consulted, developed and launched several successful ventures including The Biltmore Room in Chelsea. The Biltmore Room
was named the best new restaurant of the year, and Chef Gary Robins was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2004. Morrison also did a twoyear stint at Seattle’s Lampreia with Chef Scott Carsberg, a 2006 James Beard Award winner. His tenure as chef/owner of The Chipper, a fast casual fish and chip shop in Sunnyside, Queens, won him international acclaim. Former New York Times food critic, William Grimes, declared The Chipper the “ultimate in down market, no frills fried food.” Morrison lives in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

2011-2012 SEASON
In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a robust Endowment to assure its financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment account to provide for the PSO's future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the PSO in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra through their estate plans. Members of the Sid Kaplan Tribute program have made a planned gift to the endowment of $10,000 or more to commemorate a particular person or event. Endowed Naming Opportunities for guest artists, musicians' chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or tribute for ten years, twenty years or in perpetuity. For additional information, call 412.392.3320.

Can I organize a group for a concert? Absolutely. With a group ticket purchase you receive discounted tickets, priority seats, personalized service and free reception space. For more information, call 412.392.4819 or visit our website at pittsburghsymphony.org/groups
What time should I arrive for concerts? You may want to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to concert start time to allow time for parking, entering the hall and finding your seat. BNY Mellon Grand Classics patrons have the opportunity to attend Concert Preludes, which begin one hour before the concert in the auditorium. What should I wear to concerts? There is no official dress code for events in Heinz Hall. Many patrons wear business attire, and many prefer to be more casual. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
May I bring my children? Introducing small children to music is important to the PSO and we welcome young children to our youth concerts and Fiddlesticks Family Series. Children, approximately age six and over, are welcome at all performances with a purchased ticket. The Latecomer’s Gallery and lobby video monitors are always options for restless children. May I take pictures? All still and video photography, or audio recording are strictly prohibited at all times.
How will I find parking? Pittsburgh’s Cultural District can be very busy but guaranteed prepaid parking is available to all ticketholders in the Sixth & Penn garage across from Heinz Hall. Ask about prepaid parking when you order your tickets.
What can I do to support the PSO? Your ticket purchase supports the PSO and we thank you! However, ticket sales only cover a portion of our operating costs. To make a tax-deductible gift to the PSO, contact our Donor Relations department at 412.392.4880 or visit us online at pittsburghsymphony.org How can I get someone from the PSO to speak at our event? The volunteers of the Speakers Bureau would like to share their passion for the PSO with the community by providing a speaker for you and your organization. If you are interested, please call 412.392.2235.
