REMEMBERING MARVIN HAMLISCH AS PSO PRINCIPAL POPS CONDUCTOR On one thing many of us who spend a lifetime working in an industry filled with tremendously talented people will agree: you won’t find an individual more gifted and creative than Marvin Hamlisch. In fact, one would be hardpressed to find more-than-a-handful that even come close. Marvin’s list of accomplishments is famously long. He won awards for movies, television, musicals, recordings, and songs. Understandably, Marvin’s New York Times obituary devotes about twenty paragraphs to these well-known achievements. Sadly, it covers his activities as pops conductor with symphony orchestras in one throw-away sentence. It even says that in recent years his most steady work came from movies. Professionals in the orchestra industry, and our audiences, know better. Because after winning all of those awards, Marvin in 1995 became Principal Pops Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, embarking on the next phase of his remarkable career. Over the last 17 years he served in that role for as many as eight orchestras simultaneously, conceiving dozens of shows and conducting hundreds of performances for hundreds of thousands of devoted fans. Before 1995, Marvin had a wonderful pops program with which he made the rounds of American orchestras. But when he signed with us in Pittsburgh, he had to produce three new programs each year. My job, for the next five years, was to help him do it. During those first years we created shows that
REMEMBERING MARVIN HAMLISCH 2012-2013 SEASON
would have made P.T. Barnum proud and Arthur Fiedler, well, smile. We’ve had everyone from Marilyn Horne to Susan Lucci (!) on our stage, from Chris Botti to Sha Na Na. One memorable January weekend we did an “Americana” concert with no less than 375 performers – in addition to the orchestra! Marvin’s creative process on these shows could be manic; if he had an idea at eight o’clock on a Sunday morning, my phone would ring at 8:01. By 2000, the Pops series had become so big that we added a staff person to work with Marvin and my Pops days wound down. Marvin had almost too much talent squeezed into one person. His creative mind worked at blistering speed with enormous bandwidth, taking three or four unrelated and preposterous “titles” and blending them with melody, harmony and lyrics into a song in seconds. It was astonishing and hilarious. The piano was his second voice, spewing out notes in the same way he threw out ideas: rapid-fire, yet considered at the same time. His sense of humor and timing were impeccable and side-splitting. His instinct for working a crowd ... “magical.” The dizzying way he would bring a new show together in rehearsal was a challenge for the orchestra (many cuts and changes), a headache for the librarians (the cuts didn’t always work), and a bonanza for the audience. He didn’t care about the printed program – if he could improve the show, he would cut a piece or change the order. On and off the stage, he was a genuine and generous man. If he made a promise, he kept it. After 17 years, Marvin was so comfortable with our audience that he would walk onstage and start talking to them like he was continuing a personal conversation where it had left off the last time. And these fans, like thousands around the U.S., loved him. Marvin became an icon, winning supporters for all of the institutions he led. In this way, Marvin’s impact on American orchestras was huge. His loss leaves us all with the seemingly impossible challenge of replacing him. Marvin, why’d ya have to be so good? -Robert Moir, PSO Senior Vice President of Artistic Planning & Audience Engagement [This article first appeared in the fall 2012 issue of Symphony, the magazine of the League of American Orchestras, and is reprinted with permission.]

DEAR PSO PATRONS, Welcome to the start of the 2012-2013 PNC Pops season. We have a wonderful season of music planned for you. But, what we do would not be possible without your Annual Fund support.
Last February, the musicians of the PSO presented a “BIG CHECK” representing a collective gift from the musicians of the PSO to the 2011-2012 Annual Fund. The musicians promised a second “BIG CHECK” of $100,000 in support of the 2012-2013 Annual Fund which commenced on September 1, 2012. That check was presented last weekend to the PSO.
PITTSBURGHSYMPHONY.ORG 2012-2013 SEASON
To the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, thank you for your unbelievable artistry concert after concert and for your inspiring generosity. To our patrons, thank you for your love and support of the PSO. If you are already a donor to the Annual Fund, we hope that you will make your check bigger this year. If you are not a member of our donor family, please voice your support for our musicians and artistic leadership by making a gift to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. THANK YOU! Sincerely,
James A. Wilkinson, President & CEO It’s easy to make YOUR tax-deductible donation to the PSO’s Annual Fund: Online: pittsburghsymphony.org/donate Phone: 412.392.4880

LUCAS RICHMAN Lucas Richman has served as Music Director for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and as Music Director and Conductor for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra since 2010. His command of the core repertoire, coupled with his finesse in presenting new and contemporary works, continues to illustrate Richman as a source of musical expertise and artistic excellence. The Knoxville News-Sentinel recently wrote, “Whatever the source of inspiration was, in what is approaching three decades of writing about the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, I have not heard a better total concert than the extraordinary program the KSO played Thursday night at the Tennessee Theatre…All due credit, of course, goes to maestro Lucas Richman for elevating the orchestra to new levels. It is his leadership that has made a concert of this quality possible.” Richman received a GRAMMY Award (2011) in the category of Best Classical Crossover Album for having conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Christopher Tin’s classical/world fusion album, Calling All Dawns. He has appeared as guest conductor with numerous orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, the SWR Radio Orchestra of Kaiserslautern (Germany) and the Zagreb Philharmonic (Croatia). Richman served as Assistant and Resident Conductor for Mariss Jansons and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra between 1998-2004, and, from 1988 to 1991, he was the Assistant Conductor for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, he has collaborated with notable soloists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Garrick Ohlsson, Lang Lang, Midori, Gil Shaham, Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, Frank Peter Zimmerman, Mark O’Connor, Andre Watts and Radu Lupu. Richman earned a Master’s of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Southern California, where he was a student of Daniel Lewis. He studied privately with Fritz Zweig and Victor Yampolsky, and was also selected as a conducting fellow in master classes with Pierre Boulez, André 18
Previn, Herbert Blomstedt and Kurt Sanderling. Earlier in his musical journey, he toured with West Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra, for which he was one of four conductors from around the world selected by Leonard Bernstein to share the maestro’s podium for concerts presented in London and Moscow. Over the past decade, Richman collaborated with numerous film composers as their conductor, recording scores for such films as the Academy Award-nominated The Village (with violinist, Hilary Hahn), As Good As It Gets, Face/Off, Se7en, Breakdown, The Manchurian Candidate and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. Most recently, John Williams personally invited Richman to serve as the conductor for the three-month national summer tour of Star Wars in Concert. Richman is a respected leader in the field of planning and conducting concerts for young people, having done so for nearly 20 years with various orchestras across the U.S. An accomplished composer, Richman has had his music performed by over 200 orchestras in the last ten years and his works written specifically for children have been featured in young people’s concerts presented by orchestras such as the Atlanta Symphony, the Houston Symphony and the San Antonio Symphony. In November 2009, as the result of an NEA commission, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra premiered his Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant, a setting of poetry by Children’s Poet Laureate, Jack Prelutsky, which Jahja Ling and the SDSO recorded for release in December 2011. Taking children’s concert programming and musical education to new heights for the next generation, Richman is responsible for the creation of an animated guide to classical music, which is featured in full symphonic concerts. The character, Picardy Penguin®, is entering its sixth year of performances with orchestras, both at home in Knoxville and around the U.S. Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, his Concerto for Oboe was premiered in February 2006 (Cynthia DeAlmeida, oboe; Sir Andrew Davis, conductor), while the Knoxville Symphony presented his Concerto for Percussion in March 2006 (Timothy Adams, percussion). Richman’s choral work, Arise Triumphant, O Blessed Muse!, was pre-

miered in January 2005, with Frederica von Stade as the soloist. Recordings of Richman’s music include those featuring Giora Feidman (Variations for Clarinet and Cello), the Tiroler Kammerorchester InnStrumenti of Innsbruck (The Seven Circles of Life) and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (Day is Done), the latter of which is an album of original and traditional lullabies composed and arranged by Richman as an aid for parents wishing to introduce their children to the joys of music. The CD, a companion children’s book and a listing of Richman’s compositions can be found through LeDor Group, Inc. atledorgroup.com. Richman and the Knoxville Symphony
were the recipients of the 2006 Bank of America Award for Excellence in Orchestra Education. The KSO “Music and Wellness Program” was recognized for its partnership with community organizations to extend the healing power of music, including its collaboration with Komen Knoxville which provided a grant for the KSO to record his song for breast-cancer awareness, “We Share A Bond.” In addition, Broadcast Music Inc., in recognition of the workshop he has run for 15 years on conducting for film, presented him with their Classic Contribution Award at the annual BMI Film and Television Awards Gala in 2007.

MATTHEW MORRISON Matthew Morrison studied musical theater, vocal performance and dance at New York University’s renowned Tisch School of the Arts. His big Broadway break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit Hairspray. Morrison was later nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Light in the Piazza, and received a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for 10 Million Miles. He also starred in the Tonywinning revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theater in New York. Morrison currently stars in season four of Glee, Fox’s hit musical comedy series from Ryan Murphy. In the show, Morrison stars as Will Schuester, an optimistic high school teacher, who tries to refuel his own passion while re-inventing the high school’s glee club and challenging a group of outcasts to realize their star potential. Released in May 2012, Morrison starred in the Lionsgate film, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, which is based on the book

of the same name, directed by Kirk Jones. The film also stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez and Dennis Quaid among others. Also in 2012, Matthew hosted and narrated the PBS special entitled, “Oscar Hammerstein II - Out of My Dreams,” focusing on the Broadway producer’s life and career, which aired in March 2012. In March 2012, Morrison was featured in a performance of Dustin Lance Black’s play, 8, a staged reenactment of the federal trial that overturned California’s Prop 8 ban on samesex marriage. The performance raised money for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Morrison has signed with Adam Levine’s 222 Records and will be releasing a Broadway standards album later this year. Morrison released his self-titled debut solo album with Mercury Records in May 2011. A California native, Morrison divides his time between Los Angeles and New York.

THANK YOU.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra greatly appreciates you – our audience, subscribers and donors – for your generous outpouring of support during The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving last October. Thanks to you, the PSO raised $247,668.31 from individual donors during a 24-hr period, which put your orchestra in “first place” in both dollars and number of gifts generated for any of the participating organizations.
