SING ALONG! RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, You would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names, They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say, “Rudolph, with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh to-night?” Then how the reindeer loved him, As they shouted out with glee: “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, You’ll go down in his-to-ry!”

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW! Oh the weather outside is frightful; But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! It doesn’t show signs of stopping And I brought some corn for popping, The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! When we finally kiss goodnight, How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying And my dear, we’re still goodbye-ing, But as long as you love me so, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Follow me in merry measure, Fa-la-la, La-la-la, La-la-la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa-la-la-la-la, La-la-la-la. Fast away the old year passes, Fa-la-la-la-la, La-la-la-la. Hailed as one of the finest choruses in the country, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (MCP) is proud of its long artistic partnership with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and looks forward to another exciting season at Heinz Hall. Primarily a volunteer chorus, the Mendelssohn Choir is composed of more than 100 singers whose passion and commitment enables them to perform alongside the world’s greatest musicians. Collectively, the members of the Choir volunteer more than 35,000 hours annually to bring the joys of choral music to Pittsburgh audiences. The women and men of the Mendelssohn Choir gave one of their most powerful and touching performances ever with the Pittsburgh Symphony on May 10, 2014 at New York’s Carnegie Hall to close the Spring for Music Festival. Called “an extraordinary performance of great subtlety, great musicality and simply great singing” by the Festival’s co-founder, Mary Lou Falcone, (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and a “bold, meaningful experiment in programming” with the “impressive orchestra and chorus bringing dramatic purpose as well as musical distinction to the Requiem” (New York Times), the concert was a highly acclaimed choral tour de force.

Recent past performances include Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning and Mozart’s Great Mass to sold-out audiences at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, Brahms’ Requiem, and a critically acclaimed performance of Rachmaninoff’s a cappella masterwork, the Vespers, at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

As the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s “chorus of choice,” the Mendelssohn Choir has performed with some of the world’s foremost conductors including Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Tilson Thomas, Claudio Abbado, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, Charles Dutoit, André Previn, Sir Neville Marriner, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Helmuth Rilling, Ingo Metzmacher, Richard In addition to its performances with the Hickox, Zdenek Mácal, and Manfred Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Honeck. LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a robust endowment to assure its long-term financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment to provide for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the Pittsburgh Symphony in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra in their will. Members of the Sid Kaplan Tribute program have made a gift to the endowment of $10,000.00 or more to commemorate a particular person or event. Endowed naming opportunities for guest artists, musicians’ chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or tribute for 10 years, 20 years or in perpetuity. ON SALE NOW! “Anyone who is familiar with the Dvořák G major symphony will find Honeck’s interpretation remarkable…the result is a fresh and exciting version of Dvořák’s eighth symphony that is more romantically realized than Dvořák intended. The Symphonic Suite from “Jenůfa” is a rarely heard work by the Czech master as conceptualized by Honeck. It is beautifully orchestrated, exquisitely played and very evocative of the main themes of the opera.” Henry Schlinger, Culture Spot LA “This is an absolutely marvelous release both in terms of its thrilling performances and wonderful sound quality.” Graham Williams, SA-CD.net This is one of the most gripping performances of Dvořák’s 8th Symphony that I ever heard. Honeck and Pittsburgh excel themselves and definitely team up to one of those great partnerships like Solti and Chicago, Ozawa and Boston, Bernstein and New York, Szell and Cleveland, Tilson-Thomas and San Francisco. — Alain Steffen, Pizzicato Purchase your copy of Dvořák/ Janáček today at pittsburghsymphony.org.
