Welcome to Heinz Hall and the Symphony of Bridges Gala with your world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra!

Music has always been—and will always be—the great connector. No matter what is happening around us, music has the power to lift spirits, to awaken joy and to bring healing and hope. The shared enjoyment of music creates indelible connections that bridge the most diverse communities and cultures.

At the time of the printing of this program book, Music Director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony were travelling across Europe to standing ovations from music lovers from Ljubljana to Cologne, and to critical acclaim in these cities as well as at home (“Thousands of music lovers in the most music-mad cities in the world…will have “world-class” imprinted in their minds alongside the Steel City’s name.” –Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial board). It was an honor to represent our exceptional city as its international cultural ambassador.

Tonight, we welcome back to the stage our great friend Joshua Bell, one of the most celebrated violinists of our time, to perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in what is sure to be an unforgettable evening. Your support is instrumental in creating and presenting the Learning & Community Engagement programs that impact more than 30,000 children and adults every year.

It is an exciting time to be part of outstanding music with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Over the past season, we were thrilled to welcome nine new musicians to the orchestra, including Concertmaster David McCarroll, and 10 new members of the board. We reached deeply into the community through Beethoven In Your Neighborhood – and are committed to continuing to deepen the love of music to our neighborhoods, America and the world.

This Gala evening is our annual event to support our Learning & Community Engagement programs that promote curiosity, skill-building and knowledge about music for students from preschool to 12th grade, and that leverage the power of live music to cross geographical boundaries with meaningful artistic experiences. New Schooltime programs this season include exploring a young boy’s eyeopening bus ride with his Nana; Pittsburgh’s artistic past, present and future; and a rich dive into the multi-faceted world of jazz with Principal Pops Conductor Byron Stripling.

John Adams is one of today’s most acclaimed composers. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to his music, and he enjoys a success not seen by an American composer since the zenith of Aaron Copland’s career: a recent survey of major orchestras conducted by the League of American Orchestras found John Adams to be the most frequently performed living American composer. Short Ride in a Fast Machine was commissioned for the opening of the Great Woods Festival in Mansfield, Massachusetts, and first played on that occasion, June 13, 1986, by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas. About the title, Adams said, “You know how it is when someone asks you to ride in a terrific sports car, and then you wish you hadn’t?”

JOHN ADAMS (born in 1947)

The Moldau (“Vltava” in Czech) is the principal river of the Czech Republic, rising in the hills in the south and flowing north through Prague to join with the Elbe. Smetana wrote of his tone poem evoking a trip he took along the river in 1870, “Two springs pour forth in the shade of the Bohemian Forest, one warm and gushing, the other cold and peaceful. The forest brook becomes the river Moldau. Through thick woods it flows, as the sounds of the hunt are heard. It flows through lowlands where a wedding feast is being celebrated. At night, wood and water nymphs revel in its sparkling waves. Reflected on its surface are fortresses and castles — witnesses of bygone days of knightly splendor. At the St. John Rapids, the stream races ahead, winding through the cataracts, and finally flowing toward Prague and the time-honored castle Vysehrad. [At this point, Smetana recalled the main theme of the complete cycle’s preceding tone poem, entirely devoted to depicting the ruined castle and its aura of ancient battles and forgotten bards.] Then it vanishes far beyond the poet’s gaze.”

Jessie Montgomery wrote, “The brief, one-movement Starburst is a play on imagery of rapidly changing musical colors. Exploding gestures are juxtaposed with gentle fleeting melodies in an attempt to create a multidimensional soundscape.”

The plot of Nabucco concerns the faithfulness of the Hebrews to God during their Babylonian Captivity. The great chorus of the Hebrews, Va, Pensiero (“Fly, Thoughts”), in which they express longing for their lost freedom and their distant homeland, struck a sympathetic chord in its Italian listeners, and became the opera’s instant hit and one of Verdi’s most enduring contributions to his country’s culture. At the time of the premiere (March 9, 1842 at La Scala) much of northern Italy was still ruled by the Austrian Habsburgs under terms dictated by the Congress of Vienna more than 25 years before. Most Italians desperately wanted to be free of Austrian domination, and Va, Pensiero (“Fly, Thoughts”), the passionate hymn of freedom, became the movement’s anthem and Verdi its hero. So enduring was the fame of Va, Pensiero that it was sung by the crowds lining the streets of Verdi’s funeral procession almost six decades after it was composed.

Violinist, composer and music educator Jessie Montgomery, who began a three-year term as Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in July 2021, started studying violin at age four at the Third Street Music School Settlement in her native New York City. She was composing by age eleven, and while still in high school twice received the Composer’s Apprentice Award from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Montgomery went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in violin performance at Juilliard and a master’s from New York University in film scoring and multimedia; she also studied composition with Derek Bermel and Steven Burke and is currently a Graduate Fellow in Music Composition at Princeton University. In 2020, she was appointed to the faculty of the Mannes School of Music in New York. In September 2021, Montgomery was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera along with two other Black composers — Valerie Coleman and Joel Thompson — to develop new works in collaboration with the Lincoln Center Theater.

In the summer of 1877, Tchaikovsky undertook the disastrous marriage that lasted less than three weeks and resulted in his emotional collapse and attempted suicide. He decided that travel outside of Russia would be a balm to his spirit, and he duly installed himself at Clarens on Lake Geneva in Switzerland soon after the first of the year. In Clarens, he had already begun work on a piano sonata when he heard the colorful Symphonie Espagnole by the French composer Edouard Lalo, and was so excited by the possibilities of a work for solo violin and orchestra that he set aside the sonata and immediately began a concerto of his own. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto opens quietly with a tentative introductory tune. After a few unaccompanied measures, the violin presents the lovely main theme. The second theme begins a long buildup leading into the development, launched with a sweeping presentation of the main theme. A flashing cadenza serves as a link to the recapitulation. The Andante suggests the music of a Gypsy fiddler. The finale has the spirit of a fiery Russian dance.

Each year, the PSO has a series of fundraising and friend-raising events that benefit the Orchestra’s Learning and Community Engagement programs. We are excited to share them with you because we plan to continue these for the 2022-2023 Season as long as we have Co-chairs or Hosts willing to help us plan them.

PSO Parties of Note started nearly two decades ago. Generous hosts open up their home and the PSO works with hosts to craft a guest list for a private concert with a chamber ensemble of PSO Musicians or a PSO Guest Artist in their home. Hosts provide cocktails, hors d’oeuvres or even dinner if they wish and the reception is followed by an intimate concert. Since all of the costs are underwritten, 100% of the ticket price goes back to the PSO. The PSO creates, mails the invitations and tracks RSVP’s to make it as easy as possible for the host. Notable PSO Guest Artists who have performed Parties of Note have included Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Josh Bell, Behzod Abduraimov, Beatrice Rana, Marvin Hamlisch and Sarah Chang just to name a few. If you are willing to host a party on behalf of the PSO at your home, we would love to hear from you.

The PSO’s annual Maestro’s Wine Dinner was created in 2014 as an evening of great wine, food, music and friendship. Held each year at the Duquesne Club, the event chairs craft an evening featuring exclusive wine paired with an incredible meal. A chamber group of PSO Musicians tell the story of the wine through music during the evening. The event features a small silent and live auction with oneof-a-kind items such as hard to find wine, a chamber performance of PSO Musicians in your own home, or underwriting school buses for Pittsburgh Public School students to come to the PSO’s Schooltime concerts. We are hoping to continue this tradition in the Spring of 2023, but are currently looking for Co-Chairs to sponsor this event. If you love wine, food and music, this event is perfect for you.

Manfred Honeck has firmly established himself as one of the world’s leading conductors, whose unmistakable, distinctive and revelatory interpretations receive great international acclaim. He is currently in his 14th season as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Celebrated both at home and abroad, Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, one of the most frequently toured North American orchestras, serve as cultural ambassadors for the city of Pittsburgh. Guest appearances regularly include Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, as well as the major venues of Europe and festivals such as the BBC Proms, Salzburg Festival, Musikfest Berlin, Lucerne Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, and Grafenegg Festival.

Born in Austria, Manfred Honeck completed his musical training at the University of Music in Vienna. His many years of experience as a member of the viola section in the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra have had a lasting influence on his work as a conductor. His art of interpretation is based on his determination to venture deep beneath the surface of the music. He began his conducting career as assistant to Claudio Abbado and as director of the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra. Subsequently, he was engaged by the Zurich Opera House, where he was awarded the European Conducting Prize in 1993. He has since served as one of three

principal conductors of the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, as Music Director of the Norwegian National Opera, Principal Guest Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and Chief Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm.

From 2007 to 2011, Manfred Honeck was Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he led premieres of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Verdi’s Aida, Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Wagner’s Lohengrin and Parsifal. Guest performances in opera led him to Semperoper Dresden, Komische Oper Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Royal Opera of Copenhagen, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg and the Salzburg Festival. In Beethoven’s anniversary year of 2020, he conducted a new staging of Fidelio (1806 version) at the Theater an der Wien. Beyond the podium, Manfred Honeck has designed a series of symphonic suites, including Janáček’s Jenůfa, Strauss’s Elektra and Dvořák’s Rusalka. He recorded all of these arrangements with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and regularly performs them with orchestras around the globe.

Manfred Honeck’s successful work in Pittsburgh is extensively documented by recordings on the Reference Recordings label. All SACDs, these recordings feature works by Strauss, Beethoven, Bruckner, Tchaikovsky and others, and have received a multitude of outstanding reviews and awards, including a number of GRAMMY® nominations. The recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5/Barber Adagio won the GRAMMY® for “Best Orchestral Performance” in 2018. In February of 2021, Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony released a new recording of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in celebration of the orchestra’s 125th anniversary season. Their most recent release is a recording of Brahms No. 4/MacMillan Larghetto for Orchestra.

As a guest conductor, Manfred Honeck has been at the podium of all leading international orchestras including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Accademia di Santa Cecilia Rome and the Vienna Philharmonic. In the United States, he has conducted all major US orchestras, including New York Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony

Manfred Honeck holds honorary doctorates from several universities in the United States and also was awarded the honorary title of Professor by the Austrian Federal President. In 2018, the jury of the International Classical Music Awards declared him “Artist of the Year.”

Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony. He has also been Artistic Director of the International Concerts Wolfegg in Germany for more than twenty-five years.

In 1998 Bell partnered with composer John Corigliano and recorded the soundtrack for the film the Red Violin, which helped Joshua Bell become a household name and garnered an Academy award for the composer. Since then, he has appeared on several other film contracts including Ladies in Lavender (2004) to Defiance (2008).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bell joined the classical music world in bringing world-class performances online. In summer 2020, PBS presented Joshua Bell: At Home With Music, a nationwide broadcast directed by Tony and Emmy award winner, Dori Berinstein, produced entirely in lockdown. The program included core classical repertoire as well as new arrangements of beloved works, including a West Side Story medley. The special featured guest artists Larisa Martínez, Jeremy Denk, Peter Dugan, and Kamal Khan. In August 2020, Sony Classical released the companion album to the special, “Joshua Bell: At Home With Music.”

Bell has also appeared three times as a guest star on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and made numerous appearances on the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle. Bell is featured on six Live From Lincoln Center specials, as well as a PBS Great Performances episode, “Joshua

Bell’s highlights in the 2021-22 season include leading the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at the 2021 BBC Proms, throughout Europe, and the U.S. on tour; returning with the Philadelphia Orchestra for a play/conduct program, to the Verbier Festival, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic; and tours with the Israel Philharmonic and NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra as soloist.

In 2011, Bell was named Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, succeeding Sir Neville Marriner, who formed the orchestra in 1959. Bell’s history with the Academy dates back to 1986 when he first recorded the Bruch and Mendelsohn concertos with Mariner and the orchestra. Bell has since directed the orchestra on several albums including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Voice of the Violin, For the Love of Brahms, and most recently, Bruch: Scottish Fantasy, which was nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY® Award.

Bell has also collaborated with artists across a multitude of genres. He has partnered with peers including Renée Fleming, Chick Corea, Regina Spektor, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Anoushka Shankar, Frankie Moreno, Josh Groban, and Sting, among others. In Spring 2019, Bell joined his longtime friends and musical partners, cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Jeremy Denk, for a ten-city American trio tour; the trio recorded Mendelssohn’s piano trios at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, slated for release next season. Following Bell’s second collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Maestro Tsung Yeh in 2018, an upcoming album release features Bell as soloist alongside traditional Chinese instruments performing Western repertoire and the Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, one of the most renowned violin works in Chinese cultural heritage.

Bell has been active in commissioning new works from living composers and has premiered concertos of John Corigliano, (double concerto) Edgar Meyer, Behzad Ranjbaran and the Nicholas Maw’s Violin Concerto, for which his recording received a GRAMMY® award.

As an exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has recorded more than 40 albums garnering GRAMMY®, Mercury®, Gramophone and OPUS KLASSIK awards. Bell’s Fall 2019 Amazon Music Originals new Chopin Nocturne arrangement was the first classical release of its kind on the platform. Bell’s 2016 release, For the Love of Brahms, includes 19th-century repertoire with the Academy, Steven Isserlis, and Jeremy Denk. Bell’s 2013 album with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, featuring Bell directing Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh symphonies, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Bell has performed for three American presidents and the sitting justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. He participated in former president Barack Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ first cultural mission to Cuba, joining Cuban and American musicians on a 2017 Live from Lincoln Center Emmy nominated PBS special, Joshua Bell: Seasons of Cuba, celebrating renewed cultural diplomacy between Cuba and the United States.

Bell last performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony in June 2019, and lead a program on Front Row: The PSO Virtual Experience in June 2021.

In August 2021, Bell announced his new partnership with Trala, the tech powered violin learning app, which Bell will work with to develop a unique music education curriculum. Bell maintains active involvement with Education Through Music and Turnaround Arts,

which provide instruments and arts education to children who may not otherwise experience classical music firsthand. In 2014, Bell mentored and performed alongside National YoungArts Foundation string musicians in an HBO Family Documentary special, “Joshua Bell: A YoungArts Masterclass.” Bell received the 2019 Glashüt te Original MusicFestivalAward, presented in conjunction with the Dresden Music Festival, for his commitment to arts education.

Bell: West Side Story in Central Park.” In 201819, Bell commemorated the 20th anniversary of The Red Violin (1998), bringing the film with live orchestra to various festivals and the New York Philharmonic.

Bell’s interest in technology led him to partner with Embertone, the leading virtual instrument sampling company, on the Joshua Bell Virtual Violin, a sampler created for producers, engineers, artists, and composers. Bell also collaborated with Sony on the Joshua Bell VR experience. Featuring Bell performing with pianist Sam Haywood in full 360-degrees VR, the software is available on Sony PlayStation 4 VR.

In 2007, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post story, centered on Bell performing incognito in a Washington, D.C. metro station, sparked an ongoing conversation regarding artistic reception and context. The feature inspired Kathy Stinson’s 2013 children’s book, The Man With The Violin, and a newly-commissioned animated film, with music by Academy Awardwinning composer Anne Dudley. Stinson’s subsequent 2017 book, Dance With The Violin, illustrated by Dušan Petrič ić, offers a glimpse into one of Bell’s competition experiences at age 12. Bell debuted The Man With The Violin festival at the Kennedy Center in 2017, and, in March 2019, presented a Man With The Violin family concert with the Seattle Symphony.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Bell began the violin at age four, and at age twelve, began studies with his mentor, Josef Gingold. At age 14, Bell debuted with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 17 with the St. Louis Symphony. At age 18, Bell signed with his first label, London Decca, and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In the years following, Bell has been named 2010 “Instrumentalist of the Year” by Musical America, a 2007 “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum, nominated for six GRAMMY® awards, and received the 2007 Avery Fisher Prize. He has also received the 2003 Indiana Governor’s Arts Award and a Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1991 from the Jacobs School of Music. In 2000, he was named an “Indiana Living Legend.”

Fritz Kreisler [1875-1962] first performed with the Pittsburgh Orchestra in its sixth season on November 30 and December 1, 1900 with Victor Herbert conducting. Kreisler is recognized as one of the violin greats of the twentieth century. Composer Edward Elgar wrote his Violin Concerto for Kreisler, which he premiered in 1910. Over a span of 48 years, Kreisler’s appearances with the Symphony included performances of works by Beethoven, Bach, Bruch, Lalo, and Mendelssohn, but not this famously difficult work by Elgar.

While born in New York, violinist Yehudi Menuhin [1916-1999] spent much of his professional life in Britain. In 1943, Menuhin, an admirer of Béla Bartók, commissioned a solo violin sonata from the composer. Menuhin premiered the piece in November of 1944 in New York. Two weeks later, Menuhin performed another Bartók work for violin, his Concerto No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra with the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Music Director Dr. Fritz Reiner, who was a long-time friend of the composer. In total, Menuhin joined the Pittsburgh Symphony for 24 concerts. His last performance with the PSO took place in March 1982 with Michael Tilson Thomas as guest conductor.

Jascha Heifetz [1901-1987] was a child virtuoso, impressing violin great Fritz Kreisler. He performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony as guest soloist under conductors Dr. Fritz Reiner, Leonard Bernstein, Paul Paray, and Dr. William Steinberg. Heifetz twice performed Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D Major for Violin and Orchestra with the Pittsburgh Symphony, at a concert weekend in February 1943 and again in January 1954.

Nathan Milstein [1904-1992] was another child violin virtuoso. With a career spanning seven decades, Milstein received numerous commendations, including the Kennedy Center Honors in 1987. In the 1950s, Milstein recorded frequently with the Pittsburgh Symphony. He was the featured soloist on multiple albums with the PSO, performing violin concertos by Beethoven, Dvořá k , Glazunov, Bruch, and Mendelssohn. Milstein and the PSO recorded Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in 1959 at the Syria Mosque.

Today, the Pittsburgh Symphony celebrates with violinist Joshua Bell. With his return to the Heinz Hall stage, Bell yet again joins a prestigious list of famous guest violinists to perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Isaac Stern [1920-2001] first performed with the PSO in April 1946 conducted by Music Director Dr. Fritz Reiner. During the course of his career, Stern joined the Symphony for over 70 concerts, including three concerts at Carnegie Hall and a benefit concert in 1969 at the Penn Theater just prior to its renovation into Heinz Hall. In 1977, Stern recorded an album with the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Music Director André Previn. The recording featured Rochberg’s Violin Concerto, which had been commissioned in memory of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette music critic Donald Steinfirst. Stern and the PSO performed the world premiere of Rochberg’s work in April 1975 in Pittsburgh before performing the piece in Carnegie Hall 11 days later.

A few years after Enesco’s death in 1955, a festival was established in his name to celebrate the composer, conductor, and violinist. During the PSO’s 2013 European tour, the Pittsburgh Symphony, conducted by Manfred Honeck, made its first appearance at the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest.

JOSEPH FUCHS

George Enesco [1881-1955] performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony as guest soloist and conductor six times between 1933 and 1949. He was to have conducted another pair of concerts in early February 1938. However, the New York Philharmonic asked if Pittsburgh would instead allow him to fill in as their conductor at the last minute. The PSO agreed as a favor and thank you to New York for their assistance with the PSO’s recent auditions in New York City. Dr. Fritz Reiner, soon to be the PSO’s new Music Director, conducted the concert weekend in Enesco’s place.

GEORGE ENESCO

Joseph Fuchs [1900-1997], an American violin virtuoso, was the fourth concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra and on the faculty of Juilliard. He performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony twice, in April 1959 and in October 1960. With a grant from the Ford Foundation, Fuchs commissioned composer Walter Piston to write Violin Concerto No. 2. The world premiere of the piece was performed by Fuchs with the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Dr. William Steinberg at the October 1960 concerts in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra took the work on its 1964 European tour, performing the concerto in Iran, Poland, Spain, and Iceland.

All audience members are required to enter through state-of-the-art “free-flow” scanning equipment, designed both to enhance security and convenience. Patrons using wheelchairs and mobility devices will enter via a door adjacent to the screening equipment for alternative screening. Patrons with children in strollers may enter through the screening equipment.

If you have a hearing aid or cochlear implant with a telecoil (t-coil) you need to make sure the t-coil is activated and properly set by your audiologist. You can then activate the setting once in Heinz Hall. If you are not sure if your hearing aid has a t-coil or if you experience difficulty and require assistance, please contact your audiologist.

Sound heard through telecoils can vary from hearing aid to hearing aid and according to position in the theater. Generally, the best signal is found when you sit in the center of a row and facing toward the stage. If you need further assistance in selecting the best seats, please contact the Heinz Hall box office.
