PITTSBURGH OPERA Pittsburgh Opera’s 2012-13 season continues at 74-year tradition of excellence and great entertainment in opera. Always well-regarded for its operatic productions, in recent years the company has also increased its profile in the community, after moving to its new headquarters in the Strip District. Its green initiative culminated in LEED® Silver certification in June 2011, and its capacity for presenting events for the community has increased significantly: Pittsburgh Opera frequently presents the free and popular Brown Bag concerts, Opera Up Close, plus other recitals and events. Pittsburgh Opera is viewed as one of the most vibrant opera organizations in the U.S., with a rich artistic tradition as well as a progressive outlook toward the future. Pittsburgh Opera once again brings high drama, passion, and zany comedy to the stage for the 2012-13 season, featuring three NEW productions. Early October brings Verdi’s Rigoletto: bringing the universal stories of fathers and daughters, love and loss to the Benedum stage in a traditional production. Mozart’s allegorical masterpiece Don Giovanni returns to the Pittsburgh stage in early November, a new production with a sterling ensemble cast. In mid-Winter, our Resident Artists star in another new production, this time of the charming, farcical Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) at CAPA Theater. When Spring arrives, the sublimely sad Madama Butterfly graces the Benedum stage in another new production of a Puccini favorite, and the season closes with laughter in a colorful, uproarious production of Rossini’s La cenerentola (Cinderella).

Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi after Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse Sung in Italian with English texts projected above the stage October 6,9, 12, 14, 2012 Benedum Center Space Reservation: 9/12 Artwork Deadline: 9/24 Court jester Rigoletto loves his daughter Gilda nearly as much as he hates the Duke of Mantua. The Duke steals Gilda’s honor, and the jester must continue to joke, even as he plans revenge. Like most comedians, Rigoletto sometimes takes a joke too far for the comfort of his audience. But, this being opera, Rigoletto is met not by boos, but by a curse when one of his jokes gets a little too personal. And when he realizes that his daughter has captured the eye of the Duke, Rigoletto leads us on a whirlwind of rage, revenge, and ultimately a tragic death.

Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) By Domenico Cimarosa Based on the play The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman the Elder and David Garrick Sung in Italian with English texts projected above the stage January 26, 29, February 1, 3, 2013 CAPA Theater Space Reservation: 1/2 Artwork Deadline: 1/11 Carolina and Paolino want to be openly married, so they plot to marry off Carolina’s older sister Elisetta to appease a strict father. As it turns out, there’s more than one woman in love with Paolino. It all starts innocently enough: Paolino works for Geronimo, and is in love with his daughter Carolina. So they do what seems sensible to them, and secretly marry. It probably would have worked out fine, except that Carolina’s aunt Fidalma is in love with Paolino. And when the man betrothed to Geronimo’s older daughter Elisetta arrives from England, he falls in love with Carolina. Much scheming, amorous intrigue and comedy ensue.

Don Giovanni (The Rake Punished, or Don Giovanni) By Wolfgang Mozart Sung in Italian with English texts projected above the stage November 3,6,9,11, 2012 Benedum Center Space Reservation: 10/11
Artwork Deadline: 10/23
Don Giovanni’s lady-killing ways finally catch up to him in the form of a statue that he invites to dinner, in this Mozart favorite. The Don takes us down his wild path of seduction and attempted seduction. But life in the fast lane isn’t easy – even for a man who claims over 2000 conquests. In the end, Don Giovanni is undone by his own web of deception, and he falls victim to one of the greatest truisms in party planning: if you’re throwing a peasant wedding in your castle, do not invite a haunted, talking statue trying to avenge his death.

Cio-Cio San’s open heart and trusting nature are the reasons that Pinkerton should love her, and the reasons that we weep at the end of the opera. The young woman, nicknamed Butterfly, gives up her family and her religion to be with Pinkerton. Pinkerton gives up nothing – and promptly leaves for nearly three years. He eventually returns, with his American wife, and the young Butterfly is mortally devastated.
