Data centers have large battery banks that often sit unused • The UPS is vital technology for any data center, providing critical backup power to ensure business continuity in the event of an outage • Outages are infrequent, which often renders the battery an underutilized asset

Traditional critical power backup • Customer defines the minimum backup time required to protect critical loads • With a longer life and 8x the cycle rate compared to traditional VRLA batteries, lithium enables new ways to use the UPS and batteries

The adoption of lithium has created the opportunity for the UPS to serve dual purposes 2. Grid-aware energy storage device • Peak shaving discharges at times of peak demand to help avoid or reduce demand charges • Time-of-use optimization shifts energy consumption to avoid peak time usage • Grid support services, such as frequency regulation, further help grid operators meet the explosive growth in demand from data centers

Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Field Trial Eaton innovated an intelligent residential circuit breaker: the UL-listed device enables smart energy management across the home’s many connected devices

EPRI is in the process of completing a field trial (Phase 1) with 12 electric utilities across the U.S.

The field trial includes the demonstration of nearly 300 EMCB devices installed in residences and commercial businesses.

All project objectives of Phase 1 were satisfied, which completes requirements of the field test.

Key findings from the Phase 1 test included hardware and software changes to improve performance and scalability, are being incorporated into the commercial release.
