COOPERATIVE EDUCATION SPRING 2015

Co-op Notes and News You might be noticing a couple of new faces in the co-op office. LeeAnn Falcon joined our team as our Program Administrator back in September of 2014. LeeAnn has stepped in and has just been a tremendous help to our program and I am sure to all of you. LeeAnn previously spent several years working at Pitt but also has a background in events planning. So, for all of you who attended our wonderful dinner in December, you can thank LeeAnn for the beautiful touches. We also are enjoying the enthusiasm and professionalism of Benedetta Khoury, our first graduate assistant from the Benedetta Khoury and LeeAnn Falcon School of Education! Bene works about 20 hours per week and we don’t know where we would be without her. If you are in need of a resume critique, mock interview, or even want a special company called on your behalf, feel free to ask for Bene at the front desk. Our last fall term was quite a busy one! Our placements were up over 28% from the fall of 2013. We have almost 300 students currently working all over the country and even a couple of students abroad!

We welcome some of our newer employers, including: Zimmer, Warsaw, Ind.

Northeastern University, Boston, Mass.

Nicholson Construction, Pittsburgh, Pa.

VA Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa.

DiGioa & Associates, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Deloitte, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Tindall Corporation, Spartanburg, S.C.

Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Nestle, Inc., Chicago, Ill.

We are also excited to report that because of the USAirways/American Airlines merger, that we have our first co-op with American Airlines in Tulsa, Okla.

PVE Sheffler, Pittsburgh, Pa. NetApp, Cranberry Twp, Pa. Omnyx, Pittsburgh, Pa. Select International, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Gian-Gabriel Garcia with Dean Gerald Holder

Pitt co-ops are again being recognized nationally! Gian-Gabriel Garcia, our Co-op Student of the Year, won the 2014 National Intern of the Year Award through the Cooperative and Experiential Education Division of the American Society of Engineering Education. Gian was honored at last week’s Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration that was held in Palm Springs, California. Simeon Saunders, Academic Counselor and Program Coordinator for the Excel Program was also in attendance. It is a great time for Pitt Co-op!!!

Co-op on the Road Chris Frankovic visited the UPJ campus on January 29th. She met with the freshmen and also upper classmen to present information on Pitt co-op. Maureen Barcic visited the Bradford campus on January 27th to discuss the upcoming co-op fair and resume writing. We have great participation in the program from these two campuses. continued on next page

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Co-op Students Recognized at the 2014 Reception and Dinner Graduating seniors were honored at the 2014 Senior Recognition Reception and Dinner held on Friday, December 5, 2014, at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association in Oakland. Students who completed all co-op rotations received recognition from Dr. Gerald Holder, U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering. The upcoming graduates and their families, in addition to faculty and co-op employers, attended the event. Maureen Barcic, Cooperative Education Director, highlighted the accomplishments of the program for the 2013-2014 academic year, noting the new graduate co-op program and the largest number of student participants ever. Dean Holder awarded each senior with a Certificate of Completion from the co-op program. Ms. Barcic and Dean Holder awarded the 2014 Co-op Employer of the Year to Westinghouse Electric Company. Joe Kennedy, Director of Talent Sourcing, Mobility, Rewards, and Retention graciously accepted on the company’s behalf. Student awards were also presented to acknowledge the co-ops’ successes in their work, academics and communities. The award winners were:

Our first co-op placement at Westinghouse was in the Fall of 1998. Since then, 82 students have accepted co-op positions with Westinghouse, spanning several degree areas. Many have gone to work full time for Westinghouse after graduation. There are a number of reasons why Westinghouse has been chosen this year. One, of course, is the sustainability and true partnership they have shared with the University of Pittsburgh. Another is the true commitment they have made to our program, even when times were lean. Despite the fact that Westinghouse also hosts a large internship program, they have stayed active with co-op for all of those students hired. Our students do meaningful work, and thrive professionally. Westinghouse has also been a strong partner, not just with coop, but to the entire Swanson School of Engineering, supporting our nuclear program, our facilities, and our students.

Barbara Delgado completed three rotations at Acutronic USA as a Co-Op student through the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. Acutronic USA is a project-oriented, small company (~50 employees), and it requires each engineer to be involved in all aspects of a project. During Ms. Delgado’s third rotation, she travelled to Korea with two Acutronic USA engineers to refurbish, integrate and test a complex hydraulic simulator. Ms. Delgado proved to be a valuable member of the engineering group during her Co-Op rotations, and Acutronic USA extended Ms. Delgado a job offer upon graduation. Ms. Delgado will join Acutronic USA in the fall of 2015 as a full-time Controls Engineer. In addition, Ms. Delgado plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Systems and Control Engineering.” Nick Wichowski, Chief Electrical, Systems & Control Engineer, ACUTRONIC USA, Inc.

Each year the Cooperative Education Program solicits nominations for Outstanding Co-op Employer from faculty and students. The criteria are a sustained commitment to the co-op program and its students. We had several nominations this year and of course many outstanding employers in our co-op program, so it is always difficult to select just one. We are very happy to announce, however, that Westinghouse Electric Company has been named as the Swanson School of Engineering’s Outstanding Cooperative Education Employer for 2014.
