the transformation Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the transformation of Benedum Hall continues with a floor-by-floor reimagination of engineering education and research. Designed with input from faculty and students, each new space contributes toward greater collaboration, interaction and innovation. The University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering is pleased to share a look inside our “new” home.

American Bridge Student Reception Area The reception area is a popular gathering space for students to relax, study or meet with friends. Formerly the entrance to the Bevier Library, the reception area with its signature orange desk is also the location of the Swanson School’s administrative offices and starting point for all building tours.

RFID Center of Excellence: John A. Jurenko (BSEE ’56) RFID Electricity & Magnetism Characterization Laboratory and the Wesley C. Pickard (BSMIN ’61) RFID Anechoic Laboratory

The Center is one of the world’s leaders in radio frequency identification technology and research and serves as an international resource to academics and members of the business community. Multiple companies have formed as a direct result of Pitt’s RFID intellectual property holdings and research. In addition, through the Center, the University of Pittsburgh was responsible for establishing the basis of the 915 MHz standard for the U.S. Department of Defense.
