New Year, New SWE!

Meet More Mentors Women in STEM Social Event FM Global PD Event

so far! We had a spectacular fall semester full of professional, social, mentorship, and outreach events. Read about these awesome activities in this edition and look forward to more like this next semester! Thank you also to the lovely officers who have been hard at work planning events. Check out these cool pictures from our retreat and adventure at the escape room! Start thinking about if you want to be a future SWE officer because elections will be here before you know it. We hope everyone enjoyed their winter break!

Mentorship Events Tie-Dye

For the first mentorship event of the year, mentor-mentee pairings had an awesome time tie-dying SWE t-shirts. It was a fun way to start to get to know each other and share beginning of the year advice! And everyone walked away with a cute shirt to rep SWE around campus!

Spa Night The mentorship spa night was an amazing chance for mentors and mentees to catch up with each other about how the semester was going while destressing. After painting nails and coloring, everyone left feeling better and ready to tackle the rest of the year! Tailgate What better way to support Pitt and have fun with your SWE best friends than a tailgate before the last home game of the season? It was chilly outside but with blankets, friendship, hot food, and hot chocolate we all had a wonderful time!

ELEMENTARY ENGINEERING EXTRAVAGANZA On September 29th, Pitt SWE hosted 56 students

from local elementary schools, as well as their parents, at our Elementary Engineering Extravaganza. Students had the opportunity to learn about the different engineering fields through an expo, presentation, and hands-on activities. The activities included making popsicle stick bridges and bouncy balls, doing an origami activity to learn about coding, and playing games using a MaKey MaKey.

Girl Scout Engineering Day The annual Girl Scouts of Western PA Engineering Day was held on

November 18, 2018. This event brought girl scouts from the Western PA area to the University of Pittsburgh to learn more about Engineering and STEM fields in general. During the event, the girl scouts had the opportunity to visit an Engineering Expo and complete three Engineering Activities; Makey Makey, Design in a Box, and Renewable Energy. Overall, this event allowed the girl scouts to work towards their Think Like an Engineer Journey and this event was very successful with 71 girl scouts and 51 parents in attendance.

OUTREACH CORNER

scavenger hunt around campus! After being put into random teams, we ran around to iconic Pitt locations and took pictures to see who could complete it all first! It was the perfect way to get to know a few new faces and more about Pitt! Everyone left with a sense of motivation and a couple new friends!

We spent a hot and sunny fall day at Soergel

First Year / Transfer student Ice Cream Social

Sorgel Orchards

Scavenger Hunt

The first social event of the year was a

Orchards! Everyone had an awesome time getting to know each other better and taking cute fall pictures! We enjoyed a hayride, a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and delicious food!

A new event this year, just for first year and transfer students, was a huge success! We enjoyed a stellar sundae bar and fun minute-to-win-it games to get to know friends going through the same journey as us. It was nice to walk away with (ice cream) full stomachs and new friends.

Diversity Dinnerview On Thursday, September 27th, SWE joined with NSBE, SASE, and SHPE to present Diversity Dinnerview. At this event, members of these organizations had the opportunity to network with employers from Uber, ANSYS, Deloitte, Duquesne Light, and more. The professionals intermingled with students at their dinner tables and sat on a panel to give students career advice. Diversity Dinnerview proved to be memorable yet again, and helped many students navigate their professional journeys!
