HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE IN FOSTER CARE CREATE THE LIFE THEY WANT.
As we reflect on the past year, we must, as always, look first to the accomplishments of the scholars we serve - their voices are at the heart of everything we do at Pivotal. After over three decades of working with young people, the biggest lesson we’ve learned is that we can only be successful if we act as guides for our students, listening to what they want and helping them build the dreams they want for themselves. They set their goals. We help them read the map, break down the barriers they face, and walk by their side along the path they choose.
Last year, we had to navigate how and when to emerge from the fully virtual model we adopted in 2020 and help our students through the new challenges they faced. We worked hard to adapt and find ways to support them through financial instability and the impact that isolation and remote learning had on their mental and physical health. Our staff modeled the flexibility, resilience, and persistence that we see every day in the young people we serve. We listened to what our students needed, where they were struggling, and what we could do to support them.
After almost 17 years as CEO, my tenure is ending. I am preparing for retirement, and I’ll be spending the first part of 2023 helping our new CEO, Matt Bell, transition into the role. I want to personally thank each one of you for your trust and support and for the impact you are having on the lives of foster youth. I also want to thank our Pivotal scholars, past and current, for allowing us to be a part of their journey. I am humbled by their brilliance, tenacity, and wisdom and know that our communities and Pivotal are better because of them. And now a few words from our new leader, Matt:
“What an exciting time to be taking the reins of this amazing organization! I am thrilled to be joining the Pivotal team and to be a part of this transformational work. I’m grateful to Elise, the staff, and the Board of Directors who are helping me make a smooth transition into this role, while keeping the focus on our young people and what they need to be successful. I look forward to meeting you all and working to build a better future - one grounded in our belief that if we listen to the voices of our Pivotal scholars, we can build a community where everyone can achieve the education, career, and life they want for themselves.
In the United States, there are over 400,000 young people in foster care. A child is removed from their home and placed into foster care every two minutes. These children spend an average of 19.6 months in foster care, with 14% spending more than three years in the system. In 2019, over 20,000 young people aged out of care without a permanent family. Children of color, particularly Black and American Indian/Alaska Native children, are dramatically overrepresented in the child welfare system. Without guidance and support, these young people are falling through the cracks.
Our vision
We envision a community in which every young person from foster care gets the education, career, and life they want for themselves.

Pivotal has helped guide me and hundreds of other foster youth into universities across the nation and prepared us for our careers. Now, I’m in my fourth year at San Francisco State University and on track to be the first in my family to graduate college!
– Davina, Pivotal ScholarIf anything happens to you or your dad, call us.
When Anaztajia heard these words from her new foster mom, Stephanie, she repeated the ten digit number over and over, making sure she wouldn’t forget. At just seven years old, she had finally found an adult in her life who made her feel safe - someone she knew she could trust after so many people in her young life had let her down.
In the years that followed, Anaztajia navigated many challenges. She moved to multiple schools and homes throughout her adolescence. At one point, she moved back in with her biological dad, but had to put herself back into care the summer before her junior year of high school. Facing one of the most important years of her high school career and not sure what to do, Anaztajia used the number she had memorized all those years back and made the call. True to her word, Stephanie was quick to recertify as a foster parent to get Anaztajia back in her care and in a place that she could call home.
Stephanie encouraged Anaztajia to enroll in the Pivotal high school coaching program and career development workshops. She had no idea how much of an impact Pivotal was going to have on her life. “Pivotal has become part of my family. When I walk into the Pivotal office, I feel the energy of people who are happy to see me,” says Anaztajia. “My first coach, Daisy, has a heart of gold and a ‘no nonsense’ coaching style. Like me, she’s a strong Latina woman. I’m so glad to have her in my corner, encouraging and guiding me as I was trying to make life decisions that felt bigger than I was ready for.”
Anaztajia struggled in her senior year. She worried that she was going to become one of the 50% of foster youth in the U.S. who drop out of high school. She knew she was smart and capable, but convinced herself that it didn’t really matter and fell into habits of self-sabotage. “Those were some dark days. I remember Megan from Pivotal reaching out and saying, ‘Come to the Pivotal office. I have a desk for you right near mine. We can work together.’ She wasn’t my coach, just someone who made an effort to get to know me and support me. She didn’t have to but she genuinely cared about my well-being.”
Once Anaztajia didn’t feel alone, what felt overwhelming and impossible suddenly became achievable - she had the support she needed to graduate and began to consider college options. In her senior year, she was accepted into Santa Barbara City College. But the idea of moving away from the only support system she knew was daunting. Both her moms suggested she try it out for a year, reminding her of everything she wanted to accomplish. She also learned that her Pivotal scholarship and coaching support could follow her virtually, wherever she went, and that eased her concerns. She made the move and is now studying Administration of Justice, and Sociology in Santa Barbara. She plans to get her Master’s Degree in social work and to become a social worker when she comes back home.
We are so proud of Anaztajia and excited to help her on her path to a life full of joy as she celebrates all that she has worked so hard to accomplish.
Working with young people from foster care has been a healing experience for me personally and one that is incredibly motivating. I’ve wanted to do this sort of work since I was 11 years old. I wasn’t a part of the foster care system, but I share similar experiences: I’ve been in a place where I couldn’t plan for tomorrow. I’m familiar with sleeping outside and not knowing where my next meal will come from, much less being able to plan for the future. My empathy for their daily struggles runs deep and I want to help our students understand that they’re not alone, and that there are people who can help them achieve all they dream of.
I started out at Pivotal as a high school and then a college coach. Now, I’m the Post-Secondary Coach Supervisor and my role is to help our coaches in any way I can – I provide guidance and work with them to problem solve and find the best solutions for the incredible academic and life challenges our scholars face. Our coaches are trained to know the ‘ins and outs’ of financial aid, academic advising, transfers, internships, and the scholarship process – we facilitate connections and focus on supporting these young people as they deal with the trauma they have experienced.
I am a certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainer and I train others in how to identify, understand, and respond to students experiencing mental health challenges. When Pivotal scholars are in distress, our coaches are often the first line of support. A coach’s body language, listening skills, and choice of words can make a difference to a young person in crisis. When scholars struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, it’s no surprise that they struggle academically and professionally. The MHFA training provides us with tools to recognize when a student needs help, and to guide them to professional mental health support services that can help.
Taking care of our staff’s mental health is key. This is not a job where they clock in and clock out. When they
are trying to help a young person who is navigating mental health and other life hardships, it’s something our coaches carry with them. They care deeply about the success and happiness of our scholars. When our scholars have a win, like passing a math class where they put in countless hours studying, we celebrate with them. Likewise, when they are struggling, we feel their pain, just as you would for anyone in your life you care about. In this line of work, it is so important for coaches to understand the importance of self-care and sometimes it can be difficult to navigate the complexities of taking care of themselves while doing this important work. I’m here to make sure that we provide that pivotal support.
I also feel deeply privileged to work alongside my team to lead our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) priorities. I love Pivotal because we genuinely honor people for their journey and work with folks from different backgrounds. I’m passionate about equity work and am grateful that our leadership team values creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for our scholars and our staff.
“
My job fulfills a life philosophy of everyone taking care of each other. I’m thankful for the opportunity to help these incredible young people and to be part of their journeys. If I can, I’ll do this sort of work for the rest of my life.
– Elijah Valdeolivar, Post-Secondary Coach Supervisor
For decades, Pivotal has changed the lives of foster youth in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, starting in high school all the way through college graduation and into the workforce.
When trying to plan for what comes next, we knew the most important thing was for us to listen to our scholars and understand what they really needed. What we learned is that our students need consistent and uninterrupted support, they need it to start earlier, and they need help removing the systemic barriers that prevent them from succeeding.
Young people in foster care change schools an average of eight times while in care! This constant upheaval can wreak havoc on a student’s academic progress. Pivotal already serves post-secondary students in 23 counties in California and 13 states nationwide, providing scholarships, tutoring,
professional development workshops, internships, and 1:1 coaching. The Pivotal on the Move initiative will allow us to follow our students through different placements regardless of county lines, to provide consistency and keep them on track to succeed.
In the past, we worked with young people from foster care starting in the 9th grade but we know that starting earlier can help ease the transition into high school. By the time they get to high school, some students are already too far behind to achieve an on-time graduation. By starting our work in middle school, we can help more of our young people graduate high school in four years.
We want to provide our students a voice in the government and on legislative decisions that have a direct impact on their lives. With Pivotal on the Move, we are also committing more resources to legislative and advocacy work to help break down the systemic barriers that our scholars face.
“We have decades of experience listening to our young people and what they are telling us now is that they need uninterrupted support and services wherever they live. We don’t abandon our youth when they ‘age out’ and won’t abandon them when they ‘move out’.”

We were thrilled to welcome Dontae Lartigue to the Pivotal Board of Directors this year. As a former Pivotal scholar, Dontae’s lived experience with the foster care system and with our programs provides a critical perspective when we’re making decisions about our programming and ways to support our young people.
Dontae was raised in East Palo Alto for the first few years of his life. He entered foster care at a very early age and lived most of his life in San Jose in shelters, group homes, and various foster placements. After graduating from high school, Dontae went to De Anza College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts/Social and Behavioral Sciences. He followed this up with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from San Jose State University. Dontae is the CEO and co-founder of the nonprofit organization Razing the Bar, which provides mentorship and housing support services to current and former foster youth, as well as other underresourced youth populations.
“Pivotal is committed to showing young people that they have options. I’ve been a systems-impacted youth my whole life and meaningful connections can be hard to find. Pivotal didn’t just provide me with services and programs – they brought me into a community, helped me get through setbacks, and stuck by me, regardless of where I was in my journey. I’m excited to contribute and be part of the Pivotal journey as we continue to grow and evolve.

In 2021, Pivotal joined the Foster Youth Pre-College Collective (tFYPC) - a group of eight California organizations focused on expanding effective academic engagement programs that support the educational success of young people in foster care. Member organizations have united to close the educational opportunity gap for California’s youth in foster care. The Collective’s six direct service organizations offer programs that achieve a combined high school graduation rate of 94% for students in foster care. In addition, 82% of foster youth served by member programs enroll in post-secondary education. By making a long-term commitment to work together and share information, best practices, and data, we can give every young person in foster care in California the support they need to graduate from high school and pursue the post-secondary educational and career paths they want for themselves.
Many of our Pivotal scholars keep in touch after they leave our program. It’s always great to hear about the amazing lives they’re building for themselves. Some of our alumni want to do even more by contributing to Pivotal’s mission in their own ways. We have alumni who have joined our staff, interned with us, sit on our board, and represent us in the media by sharing their stories.
We checked in with a few of these Amazing Alumni to learn why they choose to continue to work with Pivotal:
I was a Pivotal scholar at the end of high school and all through college. When I started working as a coach for Pivotal, I was a little worried - would it be really different on the other side of things? But Pivotal supports its staff just as well to ensure we’re able to put our best foot forward to support our students. Because of the awesome support I received as a staff member, I have had the space to learn and grow through my scholars more than they probably know.
A lighthouse helps ships avoid rocky beaches and guides them safely to shore. In college, Pivotal was my lighthouse. Now that I’ve graduated, I work full time, I’m a court appointed child advocate, and I help coach wrestling at the high school and college levels. My mission is to help other foster youth get into college and get the funding and support they need to succeed. I can’t do that alone, and Pivotal staff continue to always respond with lightning speed to help these students get what they need. Pivotal is now their lighthouse too.
I continue to give back to Pivotal as a volunteer because they were there emotionally and financially to help me when I wasn’t sure I had a chance at higher education. I remember being in a position of curiosity and needing guidance in navigating the path towards a brighter educational future. Pivotal gave me the tools and helped motivate me to succeed and I hope to continue to do that for current and future foster youth.
We are so grateful to our community for the support we receive to help the young people we serve.

I donate to Pivotal because I want other foster kids to have a fair shot at life.
