MEDALS U SPORTS distributes medals at its various National Championships for first place (gold), second place (silver), and third place (bronze), along with individual event winners.

MERCHANDISE & ONLINE STORE For the past year, fans of the national brand of university sports in Canada, including friends and family of varsity athletes from coast to coast have had the opportunity to buy their very own U SPORTS-branded clothing and accessories through the online store, which officially launched in August of 2018. The U SPORTS online store makes for easier purchasing of U SPORTS items previously limited to championship events. The store currently features a selection of U SPORTS fan wear produced by Adidas and Levelwear; from shirts and hoodies, to hats, jackets and bags, as well as SummerSkates flip-flops. In addition, the store introduces a range of Team Canada merchandise to support U SPORTS student-athletes who represent our country on the international stage, as well as U SPORTS athletic equipment such as basketballs and footballs. Having U SPORTS merchandise available year-round creates the perfect buildup for the national championships, with nationwide competition on the minds and clothing of fans, family, and supporters of Canadian university sport throughout the year. As this anticipation builds, so will the store, as the brand looks to introduce more sport-specific merchandise throughout years of athletic seasons to come. The official U SPORTS online store can be found at: shop.usports.ca

TROPHIES U SPORTS currently houses 47 trophies, which are awarded throughout the Fall (22 trophies) and Winter (25 trophies) National Championships. Each of the 21 National Championships incorporate a team winning trophy, while the majority of the sports also include supplementary trophies for various Major Awards. With the official rebrand to U SPORTS taking place in 2016, the new look and feel of the organization also required the updating of all U SPORTS trophies from their previous logo and branding. This included not only the trophies themselves, but also their respective cases, which are now labeled according to their official sport pantone, aligning with the U SPORTS brand guidelines. Given the large number of trophies, as well as their constant transport across the country, it was imperative that a sophisticated tracking system be utilized year-round. In 2018, the official U SPORTS Trophy Tracker was implemented to monitor the location of all U SPORTS trophies year-round. Contact information, trophy condition, and any other pertinent information is updated every time a trophy leaves the National Office.

U SPORTS TROPHY POLICY 20.40.3.8

U SPORTS Trophies The responsibility for safekeeping, engraving and re-delivery of U SPORTS Trophies shall be with the Member to whom the trophy is presented. See U SPORTS Policy 60.70 – Trophy Policy (Appendix A) for full details on member responsibilities.

Note : The National Office is working at developing a new trophy policy, to ensure that they are well kept and prepared for subsequent championships. With this in mind, we are asking for ALL trophies to be sent back to the U SPORTS office by: June 15th, 2019

Prior to shipment of the trophy, an updated photo must be sent to the U SPORTS National Office, with proof that the trophy is intact AND a case accompanies it. Should the trophy be damaged, the handler at the time of damage will be invoiced for repair costs. Upon receipt, U SPORTS will engrave the trophy, clean, repair and ship to the next host.

Corporate Awards

WE ARE UNIVERSITY SPORT

Corporate Awards Lieutenant Governor Athletic Awards Since 1993, the Athlete of the Year Awards have honoured the top university athletes in the country and promoted post-graduate studies at Canadian universities. Each of the 56 U SPORTS universities nominate a male and female athlete from which one male and one female nominee are chosen to represent Atlantic Canada, Canada West, Ontario and Québec. These eight nominees are then considered for the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes on the Year based on their athletic accomplishment, outstanding sportsmanship and demonstrated leadership. For the first 26 years, winners were selected by the Canadian Athletic Foundation, a non-profit board established to administer the Awards and protect the integrity of the selection process. As the awards celebrated their 27th year in 2019, they were relaunched as the U SPORTS Lieutenant Governor Athletic Awards, and championed once again by His Honour Doug Mitchell and Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. With a focus on creating a leadership legacy, the rebrand will broaden the scope of the event and provide nominees with a unique personal development experience.

SELECTION CRITERIA The eight nominees are selected based on the following criteria: • Must have participated in a U SPORTS-sanctioned sport for two years (including the current year of nomination) • Must be in a course of study leading to their first undergraduate degree or graduate program (minimum second year) • Must be the university’s Athlete of the Year or runner-up; and • Cannot be a previous winner A full breakdown of each male and female recipient of the U SPORTS Lieutenant Governor Athletic Awards can be found in Appendix B.

THE JIM THOMPSON TROPHY In 2003, the Women’s Athlete of the Year trophy was named the Jim Thompson Trophy, in recognition of the contribution of the late Jim Thompson, an original Trustee of the Canadian Athletic Foundation Board. Thompson served on the Board of the Canadian Athletic Foundation since its inception in 1993. As President of TSN at the time, he was responsible for bringing the Awards to television. Thompson was not only a strong supporter of the Awards but a firm believer in the value of athletics at Canadian universities and of amateur sports. At the time of his passing in 2002, Jim was the Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

THE DOUG MITCHELL TROPHY In 2009, the Men’s Athlete of the Year trophy was named the Doug Mitchell Trophy to honour the Chairman of the Canadian Athletic Foundation, founder of the Athlete of the Year Awards, an original Trustee of the Board, and former CFL Commissioner (1984-88) who played for the UBC Thunderbirds and B.C. Lions.

WE ARE UNIVERSITY SPORT

Football Player of the Week 2018 From the opening kickoff of the season, to the 54th Vanier Cup (Presented by Promutuel Insurance), the 2018 U SPORTS Football Players of the Week honours are bestowed upon 42 outstanding football athletes over the course of 14 weeks. Each conference selects an offensive, defensive and special teams nominee, based on the previous week’s athletic performances. From the list of nominees, U SPORTS selects one winner at each of the three positions. A full breakdown of the 2018-19 U SPORTS Football Players of the week can be found in Appendix H.

Athlete of the Week (2018-19) The U SPORTS Athlete of the Week title is awarded to 52 recipients (26 male and 26 female athletes) over a 26-week period every year. Each conference nominates one male and one female Athlete of the Week in a U SPORTS-sanctioned sport, other than football, based on the previous week’s athletic performances. From the list of nominees, U SPORTS selects one male and one female as the winners. A full breakdown of the 2018-19 U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the week can be found in Appendix I.

Athlete of the Month (2018-19) U SPORTS launched the Athlete of the Month award prior to the 2016-17 athletic season, to give outstanding athletes larger recognition for their passion, accomplishments and dedication to sport. From the winners of the U SPORTS Athletes of the Week in a given month, U SPORTS chooses one female and one male athlete for the monthly title. A full breakdown of the 2018-19 U SPORTS Athletes of the Month can be found in Appendix J.

Correspondent Awards Presented by The Globe and Mail The U SPORTS Correspondent Program began during the 2016-2017 athletic season and aims to give student-journalists from across the country the opportunity to write a variety of human interest stories and profiles on U SPORTS student-athletes and programs, promote university sports in Canada, as well as build their portfolio - a true “by students, for students” initiative. At the end of each season, U SPORTS awards the Story of the Year to the correspondent with the best article, that is engaging and has a strong storytelling narrative. For the 2017-18 season, The Globe and Mail – U SPORTS’ official media partner – expanded their partnership with the national office by serving as the presenting sponsoring of the awards, supporting grassroots journalism and celebrating student sports journalism in Canada.

New Opportunities

WE ARE UNIVERSITY SPORT

New Ideas/New Opportunities The following section outlines potential projects that U SPORTS could implement to elevate the existing recognition portfolio. NOTE: these concepts are merely ideas at this point in time.

1. U SPORTS HALL OF FAME (I.E., “LEGENDS OF U SPORTS”) • Noteworthy contribution to interuniversity athletics • Anyone involved in Canadian university athletics could be honoured (i.e., administrators, coaches, athletes, former teams, volunteers, etc.) • This recognition could be done as an in-person awards piece or through the U SPORTS website (i.e., digital recognition) • E.g., the NCAA has a “Silver Anniversary Award” which recognizes the 25th anniversary of a collegiate athlete/team

2. U SPORTS INNOVATION AWARD (MEMBER INSTITUTION SPECIFIC) • Similar to OUA – Marketing Campaign of the Year, and the “CCAA Innovation Award” – unique marketing, communication and/or technological advances to it’s athletic program

3. FAN VOTED AWARDS (COULD BE BASED AROUND SEVERAL TOPICS) • Nominations uploaded by U SPORTS to social media platforms (i.e., polls) with fans voting to determine overall winners • Example topics might include: »» ○ Break-out Athlete of the Year »» ○ Best Play, Best Offensive Play, Best Defensive Play of the Year

4. U SPORTS TEAM OF THE YEAR (ONE MALE TEAM, ONE FEMALE TEAM) • Not necessarily based on wins/losses (i.e., community involvement, performance turn-around from previous years, etc.) • Similar to “OUA Team of the Year”, award may go to a team that has demonstrated quality performance, compelling story, and overall success

5. FAN OF THE YEAR • Based on fans’ online promotion of U SPORTS athletics (i.e., social media likes, retweets, etc.), national championship presence, and overall support of the U SPORTS brand

6. CHAMPIONSHIP HOST AWARD • Acknowledging a Fall and Winter championship host for their significant contributions to the elevation of a U SPORTS National Championship

7. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR • Similar to the Canada West “Gino Fracas Award Nominee”, U SPORTS could annually recognize one individual making significant contributions to their university sport community (one nomination per conference)

8. OFFICIALS AWARD • One person each year (one nomination by each conference)

9. IMPROVED RECOGNITION FOR AOW/AOM • In addition to social media exposure, U SPORTS could work towards providing these athletes with some form of apparel/merchandise piece. This could be linked to a sponsorship opportunity (i.e., the “AOW is provided by…”)

U S P O RTS

U SP ORTS AWAR DS AND R EC OG N ITION P ORTFOL I O 2 01 8 /2 01 9

WE ARE UNIVERSITY SPORT

New Opportunities

10. MEN’S AND WOMEN’S ALL-STAR SERIES • Work with Hockey Canada to provide recognition to the Men’s and Women’s All Star Series competing teams (e.g., medals, merchandise, etc.)

11. ETHICS & SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD (I.E., OUA JP LOOSEMORE AWARD) • An administrator who demonstrates high ethical standards, integrity, and honesty

12. GRAD OF THE MONTH • Similar to Canada West’s “WHL Grad of the Month”, the U SPORTS Communications team could choose an alumnus each month and highlight their professional success/community service. This would not require a trophy, but more so online recognition. It would be important to balance the location of these recipients across the four conferences

13. COURAGEOUS ACTION AWARD • Similar to the “NCAA Award of Valor”, U SPORTS could implement a distinction honouring someone (not necessarily a player) who performed a courageous act “off the playing field” (e.g., mental health, physical rehabilitation, etc.)

Conclusion

COnCLUSIOn The vision of the Awards and Recognition Program is to highlight the accomplishments of all Canadian university athletic personnel, to express gratitude for the thousands of hard-working individuals who are involved in Canadian University sport. The categories incorporated within this portfolio have been explained in detail throughout this guidebook. A full breakdown of the various Corporate Events that U SPORTS conducts have also been included (i.e., Lieutenant Governor Athletic Awards, Governor General Academic All-Canadian Commendation, U SPORTS Honours Awards, Future Stars, Athletes of the Week/Month, and so on). Within the Appendices, past winners of all Corporate Event awards, as well as the complete listing of Academic All-Canadian totals, broken down by institution. Lastly, a financial breakdown of each pillar, and Corporate Events has been included, to gain an appreciation for the significant investment that goes into this program. New opportunities for growing the program have also been provided. In closing, efforts are constantly being made to improve the recognition of all of the hard-working studentathletes, administrators, coaches, media personnel, and all others enhancing the Canadian university sport system. Looking ahead, U SPORTS is very pleased with the growth of this program in recent years. With this in mind, there is significant room for development. The National Office looks forward to the advancements of this program in the years ahead.
