MANAGER’S NOTES
SIMON WEAVER I want to start by just saying what a great group of lads this is to come in and work with. With everything that has gone on over the last couple of weeks, it’s felt like we’ve already played half a season, but three wins out of three is the perfect start. It’s so important we don’t get carried away but it’s been a tremendous effort from everyone and on our return to action following our forced break with Covid, we put in a strong performance in front of the fans against Barrow. They’re a side which are bright on the break and we needed to defend well at times but we did that, coming out with the three points. Credit to Alex Pattison for getting the shot on target which forced the equaliser. Sometimes a deflection can go your way and goal can come from it - it’s certainly gone against us enough times so we were delighted that the good fortune came our way. It contributed to a great feeling in the stadium once again when the final whistle blew. Then on Tuesday we made the trip down to Leyton Orient for one of our rearranged fixtures. I’d like to say thank you to all the Town supporters who made the trip down south. We’ve now come to expect the away following who do come to get behind us and they really do. It makes the trips all worthwhile. I thought the lads were excellent against Orient. Right from the off the lads looked organised, gritty and the distances between players when we didn’t have the ball was nice and compact.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
We were ready to spring into attack and we were menacing so it was great to score early and settle everyone down in what was a big atmosphere ready to take off. Our goals came from Luke Armstrong whose overall display was outstanding and for him to get that brace, he’ll be delighted. His whole game since he’s come to the club has been outstanding. Going into half time two goals to the good, the message was to stay composed during the second half, we knew Orient would come back at us. When the penalty came for the hosts, it was a big moment, but our goalkeeper Mark Oxley was there for us again. In all three games so far, Ox has delivered superb performances and when we’ve needed him, he’s been outstanding. He’s an understated character but I don’t think he could have done much more since arriving at the club. We didn’t get back to Harrogate until the early hours of the morning so the lads deserved the day of on Wednesday. After that though, the minds have been set on Exeter and as I saw when I went to watch their match up at Barrow, they’ll be very tough opposition. We’ve got a great togetherness and drive to accumulate as many points as possible as fast as possible, so the plan will be to continue that against Exeter this afternoon.

CAPTAIN’S NOTES
JOSH FALKINGHAM It's been a busy few days but it’s been brilliant to be back - back training and around the lads. Going into the Barrow match last Saturday, we didn’t really know what to expect and we’d only really find out once the whistle had blown and we were underway. To come from behind and pick up three points was a great feeling as it meant we were able to continue building the momentum from the match against Rochdale on the opening day of the season. To then make it three wins out of three following Tuesday night’s victory against Leyton Orient, it’s made for a great start to the season. With the commitment shown from the fans travelling down on Tuesday night, we needed to perform, simple as that. They’ve taken time out of work for probably both Tuesday and Wednesday and they’ll be waking up shattered but at least with a smile on their faces. We’re so chuffed they took the time out to support us in the circumstances that were thrown upon them last minute. Home and away the support is vital and as players we appreciate it so much. We want it to continue and we want to see those numbers grow and grow. Each game so far has been a different type of fight; whether that be scoring first and seeing the opposition come back into it, coming from behind to pick up the three points or going ahead and keeping a clean sheet like we did on Tuesday. Whatever test that’s been thrown at us, so far we’ve passed. I don’t think we’ve played our best free-flowing football in any of the games so far but the manner of the victories can only be a positive moving forward as we know there’s so much more to come. We can have confidence knowing we can jump over any hurdle that’s put in our way. We’re not getting carried away but we’ve
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
taken the lessons learned from last year and so far implemented them well. It’s really promising and hopefully we can continue that against Exeter City today. A lot of change has gone on at their club. Players coming and going with a couple coming here in Rory McArdle and Lewis Page. Before the campaign kicked off they were well backed in the odds to go and finish high up in the table and from the contests we had with them last season, we know how good a team they are. They’ve got the experience in this league and know how to pick up points and have successful seasons. I fully expect it to be a really tough game and they have some individual players with real quality that if you give them time and space, will punish us. However, we’ll turn up with the mindset and the same mentality that we’ve had in the first three games, looking to put in a strong performance in front of a really good crowd.

PLAYER IN FOCUS
MARK OXLEY Over 200 Football League appearances, 6ft 3inches tall and a genuine, down-to-earth bloke who loves playing football. That’s our new goalkeeper Mark Oxley. The 30-year-old arrives this summer with quite a story to tell. From being a young pro in the Premier League at Hull City, to experiencing the passion of Scottish football, to then being the captain of Southend United and being in the epicentre of their financial nightmare. This is ‘The Ox’s’ journey to Harrogate Town. It all began in his home town of Rotherham, having fun in summer soccer camps ran by former Rotherham defender Nigel Johnson. From the start, Ox was thrown in goal and he admits it was probably because he was “no use outfield”. Call it good fortune or fate but it turned out to be a key moment for Ox even at such an early age. Johnson, who was still heavily involved with Rotherham, told the keeper to trial for The Millers and that’s exactly what he did, successfully joining the academy at the age of nine - a place he’d stay up until just before his 18th birthday. Ox progressed nicely through the ranks at Rotherham and while playing for the under 15s, was called up to the club’s youth team playing with lads three years older than him. Then the next year, he found himself in the reserve team playing alongside first teamer’s who were either recovering from injury or were simply out

of contention. Ox was exposed to a high standard very early on but it was all crucial experience for the keeper. “It put me in good stead as it exposed me to that environment,” Ox explains. "To play a few reserve games was something to be proud of. It was a good experience as well,” Ox adds. “When it came to progressing from u16s to the youth team I already knew what to expect.” Ox deservedly signed a two-year scholarship with Rotherham when he turned 16 and it was a “big moment” for the lad who had grown supporting the Millers. It was also a humbling moment as he saw his

best mate who had captained his team’s throughout the academy not get offered a deal. “It does make you realise how lucky you’ve been,” Ox says. “I'd been there since a young age and you see the number of lads who come and go even before there's a chance to sign a scholarship. You read figures about how many lads come out of football and it’s mad. We take it for granted sometimes as when you know so many people in football, you’re just in a bubble,” Ox admits. Again, he was progressing nicely and it caught the attention of the first-team coaches. When an injury occurred to Rotherham’s number two, Ox got the unexpected call up to the bench. It was a big step up for the young keeper learning his trade and he explains how being around Rotherham’s number one Andy Warrington was a huge help in his development. Even the little things like sorting him out with a pair of proper gloves helped Ox feel a part of the group.
14
The East Yorkshire club had just been promoted to the Premier League with Phil Brown as the manager and it was the first time Ox and a juvenile Joe Cracknell would cross paths. The plan was for Ox to go and experience firstteam football at the lower levels but a broken thumb not too long after joining Hull resulted in six months on the sidelines and an end to any game time during his first campaign.
Approaching the end of his first year as a scholar, Ox got word that Aston Villa were ready to offer him a move to the Midlands. A trial soon followed and he impressed manager Martin O’Neil and his coaching staff. It looked like Ox was going to make the big move but for reasons he doesn’t know, the deal fell through.
A back injury then needed surgery, it wasn’t the ideal start for the Ox.
However, there would be another twist as on the day of Rotherham’s squad photo, Ox was pulled aside and told not to be in it as Hull City had come in for the keeper. He then signed a three year deal with the Tigers in August 2008, just before his 18th birthday.
Ox spent the majority of the 2010/11 season on the bench for Hull with short spells at Grimsby, Walsall and Burton all sandwiched in between. At Burton, Ox had started to show his worth and was set to be recalled by Steve Bruce to feature in the first team.
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
When the keeper did eventually get back to full fitness, it was a case of finding the right blend of first-team football while still learning from the experienced pros at Hull.

However, a broken finger halfway through the month-long loan put a halt to proceedings and the keeper was once again on the treatment table.
Oxley celebrating with teammates after scoring on his debut for Hibs
“It made me feel good knowing that the manager was thinking about me but at the same time, it was a real sigh moment. When was I going to get my break?” Ox says. “It was hard to stay motivated but it’s why I see each game as potentially my last, you just don’t know what can happen. Luckily I had good staff around me to keep me positive but I guess every player has to go through it at some stage. It was just a shame I kept getting those injuries at the wrong moments.” Once he returned to full fitness, Ox did get a cameo appearance against Sheffield Wednesday after Eldin Jakupović was forced off injured with 20 minutes to go. It was his league debut for the Tigers and it turned out to be his only appearance for the club, despite signing a new two-year deal at the end of that season. Ox was now 23 years old and needed to start showing what he was capable of. The opportunity came while on loan with Oldham during the 2013/14 season, where the keeper made 43 appearances for the Latics. Although admitting it was a “mixed season”, playing football regularly was exactly what Ox was after. “I remember telling myself to play as many games as possible, as well as I can,” Ox says. “We played Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup so there were 40 odd thousand for that game and I had to deal with other things like not winning every game. When you’re used to playing reserve games where the points don’t really matter to then playing a first-team game where they do, it’s just another reason to go out there and get experience at a young age.” Yet another loan move followed the next campaign but this time it was north of the border. Oxley signed for Hibernian for the 2014/15 season and incredibly scored on his debut for the club with a long-range clearance which his opposite number completely misjudged. Halfway through the loan, Ox was set to be

recalled by Hull as both their keepers had got injured. However, transfer regulations meant Hibs kept hold of Ox for the remainder of the season. It was yet another opportunity taken away from the keeper. Ox did then sign permanently for the Scottish outfit at the start of the next season and was regular in the team until a one-match ban near the end of the season meant he lost his place in the starting XI, just as Hibs had reached the Scottish Cup Final and won the competition for the first time in 114 years. “At the time I don’t think I realised how much it meant to the fans to win the Scottish Cup,” Ox says. “I was annoyed that I couldn’t play in the final but I had to recognise the part I played in getting us there. We had a massive open-top bus parade in the city and it’s something I'll never forget. They shut the city off and it was just full of light green shirts, it was unreal.” Although the club finished the season with silverware, Hibs opted for a change of manager with Neil Lennon taking charge. He told Ox that he was set to bring a new keeper to the club and couldn’t guarantee Ox would stay as number one.

The Rotherham born man had now got a taste for first-team football and wasn’t going to settle being the second choice.
the elation after staying up, especially doing it against Sunderland who are a massive team, that probably is something to be proud of.”
He got wind that League One side Southend were interested and he soon reunited with former Hull City manager Phil Brown. Once again though, injuries crept up on the keeper as he broke his elbow during his first season.
What lay ahead for Southend though turned out to be disastrous for the Essex based club.
Nonetheless, Ox can back strong the following campaign was voted Fans Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season as the club finished mid-table following the arrival of Chris Powell at Christmas. A new three-year contract for Ox came next, along with the captain's armband. That season, the Shrimpers narrowly steered clear of relegation following victory against Sunderland on the final day of the 2018/19 season. Although never wanting to be in a relegation scrap, it was still an achievement to fight until the end and secure safety. “We had some horrific injuries that campaign, four boys did their ACLs or something like that and they were all first-team players," Ox explains. “At one point there were 8/9 first-team players out injured and results spiralled from that. I suppose it’s not something to be proud of but there was

Chris Powell got the sack, Sol Campbell came and went as manager and a winding-up petition in January 2020 resulted in players not receiving their wages, a saga that went on for months. By this point, Southend were 22nd in League One, 15 points from safety and now with a transfer embargo in place. Covid then threw another spanner into the works and it made for a very messy situation in unprecedented circumstances. For the players, it was an unwanted distraction. “It’s not something you really like to dive into but that was what happened,” Ox concedes. “My job at the end of the day was to play football but I think it was unprecedented for everyone with Covid. For me, it was more how we were left to just deal with it. I remember being on the phone with the PFA every day chasing up players wages. I don’t feel like we should have had to do that, maybe it was me who took the bull by the horns and maybe represented the players a bit but it shouldn’t have got to that. It was so flaky how everything was dealt with,” he adds. “We were told we’d get the money if certain things

happened etc. It was hard times for everyone in the country, people lost their jobs so I can’t complain too much but it does take you away from that feeling of just enjoying football as a young lad. It was always something to talk about and I don't think that's healthy in any workplace. There were boys not knowing when or if they’d even get paid and when you’re going into a game on a Saturday discussing that stuff on the bus, something can’t be right. Us players do have to take accountability as well though. Whether we were good enough or not, we had to get on with it.” Southend were relegated when the season was brought to a close and they began the 2021/22 season with a squad full of youngsters. It made for a torrid season and relegation looked almost a certainty from the start. There was a glimpse of hope in January 2021 once the club was allowed to sign players and with six games to go, the Shrimpers were five points from safety. However, their best efforts weren't enough to survive the drop. It meant relegations in back to back seasons for Southend and their captain - something which was difficult to process. “Any relegation is tough to take, it’s not what anyone wants,” Ox says. “People have their own opinions but I’m not one to shy away from things and jump ship, I honoured my contract. Some lads are still there now wanting to help a club of that size get back to arguably where they should be.” For Ox though, his journey in the Football League was far from over as Simon Weaver was ready to strengthen the goalkeeping department with a

It was a chance for Ox to be back closer to home and also get back to “enjoying” football again. “When signing for Harrogate, that’s how it felt for me, I can enjoy it again,” he states. “Being in the position and rut I was, I didn't know if I’d get that chance again so it’s great to be a part of. Hopefully we can push further. I’ve played 350+ games now and I’m only 30 years old. With the experience I've got at this level and the level above, hopefully, I know what is expected. It’s all based on hard work and graft - something that is constantly reiterated at this club and I like that because if you have that, you give yourself half a chance." “My main focus is to know I’ve done everything I can to try to help the team, if that can be off the back of another successful season for the club, then brilliant.”

EXETER CITY
For Exeter City the 2020-21 season ultimately ended in disappointment - missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the season. The season had started so well with them losing just once in the first 12 games, recording a club record unbeaten away run up to December and scoring for fun. But after Town's 2-1 victory at St James Park in mid-December, the Grecians' form dipped and too many draws over the remainder of the season dropped them outside the play-offs, finally finishing ninth. Over the Summer, Exeter saw the departure of several club legends including Jonny Maxted, Jake Taylor and Ryan Bowman as well as Harrogate-bound pair Lewis Page and Rory McArdle, whilst Academy prodigies Randell Williams and Joel Randall moved on into the Championship with Hull City and Peterborough respectively. Now in their tenth season in League Two, manager Matt Taylor has been busy bolstering up his squad again with notable arrivals Jevani Brown and Timothée Dieng joining from Colchester United, Geroge Ray from Tranmere Rovers and Sam Nombe from MK Dons as well as the season-long loans of keeper Cameron Dawson from Sheffield Wednesday and striker Padraig Amond from Newport County. After an uncharacteristically slow start without a win or a goal in their first four league and cup games, a run last equalled nine years ago, the Grecians ended their goal drought in some style last week as they thumped Bristol Rovers 4-1 to give them their first win of the season, with last season's top scorer Matt Jay netting twice.

Appointed: June 2018 Age: 39
The former Exeter City captain was appointed in his first managerial position in June 2018 having played for The Grecians between 2007 and 2011. Taylor’s career started at Preston North End, and then Everton Under-17s before playing non-league for Burscough, Rossendale United, Matlock Town, Hucknall Town and Guiseley. While playing he studied for a degree at Sheffield Hallam University where he represented the University team before transferring to Team Bath, while studying for a Diploma in Fitness Excellence at the University of Bath. His spell at Exeter came next, followed by moves to Charlton, Bradford, Cheltenham, Newport and Bath City before returning to Exeter as a coach in 2016. Following the departure of long-serving manager Paul Tisdale to MK Dons, Taylor took up the reins and finished ninth in League Two in his first season in charge, just a point outside the play-offs. A fifth place finish and loss to Northampton Town in the Play-Off Final followed in 2019-20 before a ninth place finish last season.

THE 1931 FUND
Named after the year Exeter made the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, the 1931 Fund is a group of around 60 Exeter City supporters who all donate £19 a month to help pay towards an extra member of the first team squad. This season the money was used to help provide funds for Jordan Dyer.

HTAFC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SECURE TRUST GRANT We’re delighted to announce that the Harrogate Town Community Foundation have received a grant which will help support our work within local schools over the next 12 months. More specifically, the funding provided allows our foundation to continue educating local primary school teacher’s on delivering high quality PE lessons and improving their confidence to do so. In addition, it will help us to continue inspiring young people to be physically active within school as well as joining
community clubs outside of school. As well as providing PE lessons and sport based activities, the Community Foundation have been heavily involved in programmes such as the Reading Stars which inspires children to fall in love with reading and understand the benefits of why it is so important. On top of this, the Foundation has been able to build strong relationships with schools in the local area. For example, in July 2021 the Community Foundation worked

together with Saltergate Junior School’s year 4 Morpurgo class to put together a social action plan which would help the local community. The children were supported by coaches from the Community Foundation and came up with the idea to organise a litter pick around the school grounds and Jennyfield area of Harrogate. The process involved writing up their own social action before dividing into 2 groups and pitching ideas to their head teacher Mrs Mortimer. Once the litter pick was agreed,

Morpurgo class wrote letters to the council requesting litter picking equipment and once they said yes, the class went out with teachers and Community Foundation coaches, collecting 12 big bags of litter in the space of 2 hours around Jennyfields. The litter pick gave the children ownership and the motivation to want to help their community,

as Mrs Mortimer explained. “It has been great to be involved with the social action project through Harrogate Town. It has opened the children's eyes, what a community means and what the benefits are to helping the community.” Mrs Mortimer continued, “The children have loved having Harrogate Town in school and feel very proud of themselves for deciding on a project, how they could do it, asking for help and then finally following through and completing the litter pick. The children even want to go out and do it again both at home and in school.”

To kick off our pre-season we welcomed a fantastic new manager in Kez, along with some great new signings, which has all contributed to positive performances and results. This pre-season has been one of the toughest, both physically and mentally, which I believe has brought unity and solidarity to the team as we have pushed each other to be the best we can. We have set the precedence with the non-negotiable’s of work ethic, desire, passion and accountability which will be carried on throughout the season in the team. We have a dynamic, versatile and talented set of girls with competition for places which is a great thing to have within the team. Nothing makes a player play better than having to fight for your shirt. It has been nice to get on the score sheet a few times during pre-season, and it is an honour to have captained the squad for three games. I’ve given it everything so far - if you can walk off the pitch at 90 minutes

and say you’ve given everything then what more can you do, that’s what I always aim for. The ambition for the season ahead is of course promotion, we play to win. I feel this is the strongest squad we have had since I have been at Town and I firmly believe in every player’s ability and willingness to push us on for promotion this year. It’ll be tough, but I know we will rise to the challenge. Pulling on the Harrogate Town shirt every week is empowering, not only as my local team, but for a team that have become like family. The club set up has gone from strength to strength and I am proud to say that I am a Harrogate Town player. I’m very excited for the season to start and I just can’t wait for it to kick off. The training sessions where the running felt never ending, or felt impossible to complete, the pain mentally and physically will all be worth it come the 5th of September! Please come and support us in our first league game against Farsley Celtic on Sunday 5th September, 2pm kick off at Rossett Sports Centre.

Town's Academy were back in action last Saturday against Huddersfield Town in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup and it was a frustrating afternoon for the young Harrogate lads. In the first half, Town displayed a lack of urgency and reaction to first and second balls and allowed the visitors far too much time and space to play, and with their quality up front, the young Terriers bagged three goals without reply before half time. A change of formation and some personnel changes at the break gave Town more physicality and more urgency to stop Huddersfield from playing whilst imposing more of our 'Plan to Play' mentality. This reaped dividends and Town created a number of chances and scored two goals in a much better all round performance in the second half with Joe Dixon scoring for Town. Despite the result, the squad is gaining more experience week in week out and this will only help develop this group of players.

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I
37
I LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP
by Mark Walker, PA Media
WEEKEND FIXTURES Rochdale v Colchester United FRI Barrow v Bristol Rovers Crawley Town v Northampton town
Luke Armstrong's first-half double secured Harrogate a 2-0 midweek win at Leyton Orient and extended their winning start to three matches. Summer signing Armstrong struck in the eighth and 31st minutes as Simon Weaver's side followed up Saturday's 2-1 home win against Barrow to climb up to third in the table. Nicky Cadden fired a hat-trick as leaders Forest Green beat Crawley 6-3 at the weekend to extend their 100 per cent start. Cadden's first-minute opener and Matty Stevens' fifth goal in four games were both cancelled out by Crawley's Jake Hessenthaler before the break. Jamille Matt put Forest Green back in front and Cadden struck twice in as many minutes before substitute Jake Young added a sixth. Kwesi Appiah scored Crawley's third in the closing stages. Former Mansfield striker Andy Cook grabbed Bradford’s winner against his old club in a 3-2 win at the One Call Stadium. Paudie O’Connor headed Bradford in front and after Oliver Hawkins' double for Mansfield, the visitors hit back through Charles Vernam before Cook sealed their third straight league win. Swindon climbed up to third on goal difference as Jack Payne's solitary second-half effort clinched a 1-0 win at Salford, whose winless start was extended to four matches. Matt Jay scored twice as Exeter registered their first win of the season in style, 4-1 against Bristol Rovers at St James Park. The Grecians, who had not scored in their previous three league matches, led 4-0 inside 25 minutes through Matt Jay's early double,

Timothee Dieng and Harry Kite. Sam Finley curled home Rovers' consolation.
Harrogate Town v Exeter City
Port Vale scored their first league goal of the season through Devante Rodney in a 1-1 draw at Stevenage, who rescued a point thanks to Luke Norris's 30yard effort. Oldham’s miserable start continued as they slipped to a fourth straight league defeat, losing 2-1 at home to Colchester.
Hartlepool United v Carlisle United Leyton Orient v Bradford City Salford City v Newport County Scunthorpe United v Tranmere Rovers
Scunthorpe and Sutton are both still winless this term after drawing 1-1 at the Sands Venue Stadium and Rochdale notched their first win, 3-1 at Northampton. Carlisle and Leyton Orient drew 1-1 at Brunton Park and Newport won 1-0 at Tranmere, while Hartlepool's 2-0 home victory against Walsall extended the visitors' winless start.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
