We welcome you all back to the EnviroVent Stadium today after two long away trips that resulted in mixed emotions on the return journey.
Firstly, we were delighted with the performance at Gillingham 11 days ago and were fully deserving of the three points. Going to places like that is a reminder of the standard of club we are visiting week in week out and to put on a performance like that was another proud moment. We passed the ball well and created a number opportunities to score, There’s nothing quite like a hard fought away victory to bond everyone together! We were disappointed to not be able to follow that performance up with another good result at Barrow last weekend. We battled hard against the elements and defended solidly until the 45th minute, but switched off from a free kick and found ourselves 1-0 down on the back of a deflected ball into the box, proving again that switching off just for a second can prove costly at this level. It was immensely frustrating to concede on the stroke of half time and, despite a few chances late on, it was too little too late, we didn’t do enough. We are extremely appreciative of the supporters who make these long journeys with us, your dedication is not taken for granted, by myself, the management staff or any of the players.

Barrow away was always going to be a tough game, we’ve been there many times now and know how difficult it is. I felt we finished the game the stronger of the two sides and Barrow were holding on in the last ten minutes, but throughout the game we could have done a lot more. The lads were really disappointed and are wanting to put things right this week against Newport. They are a team that have established themselves in this division and are always going to be strong, especially after the week they’ve had getting their first win over Tranmere and then beating Portsmouth on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup.They’ll be coming to us full of confidence and on a real high, so it is going to be a really tough ask, but we’ll be aiming to take the positives from the start of the season we have had and have got to make the EnviroVent Stadium a tough place for anybody to come.

To have had three clean sheets in our first four league games is a real positive, it’s something that the Manager and Thirs worked on a lot during pre-season. Last season the amount of goals we conceded wasn’t good enough and we needed to improve. You have to take your hat off to the lads coming in for that, there has been a lot of new faces who have never played with each other before, but they’ve had a fantastic start to the season.
Ending on a positive note I managed to get my first full week of training in this week and, touch wood, am pushing towards being back in the fold. There has been no reactions after any session so far so I’m feeling really positive about it and hoping I’ll be back playing as soon as possible.
It’s great to be back at The EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon after two long trips to Gillingham and Barrow. Our last home game here was played in extreme heat against Crawley which I felt made it difficult for both sides and did affect the pace of the game. We followed that with without doubt the performance of the season so far away at Gillingham, especially with the game being just a few days after Crawley and all the energy that had taken. The lads were brilliant and showed they are doing the right things recovery and preparation wise to put in such a good performance, they deserve a lot of credit for that. That win has given us a lot of confidence moving forward, especially with a lot of the new lads in the side that night. It was a massive lift for everyone and goes to show the level of performance we are capable of and the results we can achieve.

With clean sheets in both of his SkyBet League Two starts at The EnviroVent so far, Pete Jameson has already made a big impression since making the switch from York City in the Summer.
This season is Jameson’s first experience of EFL football, with his background in non-league shaping his journey and dominant style of goalkeeping.
“They told me from the start I would only be coming in for training, I knew at the end of that season that would be the end of it really, but that made me determined to go into football, which is when I moved to Gateshead.”
It wasn’t until secondary school that Pete was first placed in goal though, with then Sunderland number one Thomas Sorenson a big source of inspiration, and it would be his performances between the sticks for his school team that first attracted the attention of Middlesbrough.

“After leaving school at 17 I joined Middlesbrough, there was an injury to one of the keepers and they needed another body in for training so brought me in. I ended up doing a scholarship there, it was a great experience training with some really great lads, including the first team keepers Brad Jones, Danny Coyne and Jason Steele, I was able to work with them every day and learn loads from them.
“I used to play outfield all the time, but I remember one game the school team needed a keeper and I thought I’ll give it a crack.
Born in the ‘football mad’ area of Sunderland, Jameson and his Dad, who worked in a local factory, were season ticket holders, following the Black Cats home and away.

When he joined, Darlington were playing in the Northern Premier League Division One North with the likes of Harrogate Railway and Salford, meaning Jameson would have to balance working multiple jobs in scaffolding, factory work and at Sunderland City council with his football commitments.“Ihadsuccess as a lad winning leagues, but Darlington was my first taste of winning proper men’s football and that was an amazing feeling.
“I’ve always been a big lad, but when you’re playing senior football you’ve got to make sure you’re hitting the gym and making sure you’re doing the right things away from football, so when you are playing on Saturday you can handle yourself.”Jameson’s
“We did the double promotion, winning the playoffs the first year then winning the league the next year to get to the National League North.
“It’s a big club and they get a lot of fans, that was a new experience for me playing in front of a crowd, it’s definitely got more pressure to it but I really enjoyed it.
“Physically and mentally it was tough working alongside playing, if you’re playing away on Tuesday night you’re not getting back until daft o clock, then you’re up again early for work, training

performances would catch the eye of Darlington Manager Martin Gray, who offered the young keeper a trial that would lead to him becoming number one at Blackwell Meadows.
“I soon realised I had to mature as a goalkeeper and also physically get up to speed, that experience definitely shaped me as a keeper.”
Again brought in as a training goalkeeper, Jameson would seek out his first taste of men’s football at Consett and Sunderland RCA, signing dual registration terms.
An impressive first season at Bootham Crescent would end in heartbreak for Pete and his new teammates as Covid-19 hit, ending York’s chances of promotion in his first season at the North Yorkshire club.

“My first season we missed out on the Playoffs by a couple of points then second season we got in the Playoffs, which was a big achievement for a team like Blyth, there’s full time teams in that division and it’s not an easy one to get out of.

“We did well as a team, I did well personally and that’s when Steve Watson gave me a ring to say he’s been watching me and wanted to take me to York to be their number one.”
It was at Darlington that Pete would first meet best mate Mark Beck, but his time at The Quakers would soon come to an end when Blyth Spartans, and Luke Armstrong’s Dad Alun, came calling.
“I would think back to my time at Middlesbrough and that taste of wanting to be a full time footballer, especially professionally, that kept me going, I kept working at it and its took me a few years, but I managed to get there in the end.”

“I still look back in anger now at that first season because we should have been out of that league, we knew as a team we were going to go on and win it, I know Kings Lynn won it on the points per game but we were top of the league.
“I felt like I owed them that with what had happened before, after I got that I felt like it was the right time and right step to move forward.
“If you haven’t got ambition in football something is wrong, people often go and chase whatever it may be, but my ambition was to go and play as high as I could.
“I was so thankful we had managed to do it because it is such a tough division to get out of, a lot of teams who come down think they will go back up but it doesn’t work like that.
“The penalty save in the semi-final was a great moment for me, it was 1-0 just before half time and that could have shifted the momentum if they scored.“Personally
“It took a while for us to do it and we had been so unlucky, so I was just happy in my last year I could help them get promoted.

“I’d had the chance to move up to The National League before, but my objective at York was to help them get promoted and that’s what stopped me moving away the first time, even though it was to a higher level.
“I don’t want to put a title on where we want to be, but in football anything can happen, I want to climb up the league and see where that takes us!”
“Steve Watson had made some good signings, we were favorites to go up and personally I was playing really well, I had kept 16 clean sheets and got in the National North Team of the Year, then Covid hit and you just think ‘how’s your luck?’”

“That ambition doesn’t stop now, the hard work keeps going, I just want to make sure I stay in the team, give my best and get as many clean sheets as possible to help the team rise up the league.
“I knew there was interest from Harrogate and a lot of interest from National League and League Two clubs at this point, but speaking to Mark Beck almost every day helped me make up my mind.
Earning promotion to the National League left Jameson with a difficult choice having reached new heights at York City, but knowing there was interest from teams in the EFL, Harrogate Town of course being one, left a decision to be made.
“After the second season of trying to win promotion was null and void, to get promoted via the Playoffs and all the emotion that goes with that was just amazing.

Walter Cook was born in 1894 at Midsomer Norton, Somerset, but by 1901 the family had moved north to Castleford and he was on the books at Leeds City 1918/19. His footballing career as a goalkeeper realy began the following season at Midland League outfit Castleford Town. He was with Third Division Plymouth Argyle 1920-24 playing nine games for the Pilgrims before joining Third Division South Brighton for £400 playing 52 games between 1924-26. After a short spell with Third Division North Darlington, he moved to Stockport County in the same division, playing nine games for the Hatters. From there he finished his playing career at non-league Harrogate AFC (Town’s forerunners) when he joined them for the 1929/30 campaign. This was his only season at Wetherby Road, making 33 league and cup appearances (missing only two games) as he helped Harrogate finish Third in Yorkshire League behind champions Bradford City Reserves. In 1939 he came to live in Harrogate and for 1950/51 became Harrogate Town’s new coach/trainer/manager, aged 56. Under his guidance, in his three seasons at the helm at Wetherby Road, he led Town to runners-up spot in West Yorkshire League Division One in his first season, losing just nine of 36 games, and then to the West Riding County Cup semi-final in 1952/53. After his success at Town, for 1957/58, he moved down the road to Station View to Harrogate Railway Athletic for one season and under him they were promoted to Yorkshire League Division One for the first time. He died in Harrogate in 1973 aged 79.

Staff from the Community Foundation have been hard at work over the Summer to deliver special sports camps in both Nidderdale and Boroughbridge.
The FEAST programme is run by North Yorkshire Together, a partnership between North Yorkshire Youth, North Yorkshire Sport and Rural Arts that supports residents to be happy and healthy. The funding recognises that school holidays can put additional pressures on family finances due to increased food and childcare costs and aims to provide children with activities which help them stay healthy, active and socially connected and allow them to develop new skills.
Jill Stacey, Co-ordinator of the FEAST Camp for the Foundation explains; “To be able to provide opportunities in our local communities has been fantastic. Especially those children who might not have been able to access sessions previously. It was so rewarding to use our influence as Harrogate Town AFC to inspire young people and develop a passion for healthy lifestyles. We were thrilled with the turn out and look forward to continuing camps in December 2022”.
The Foundation secured funding to deliver healthy holiday activities including sports, outdoor activities and creative workshops. Including special sessions on healthy lifestyles, nutrition and how to prevent food wastage.

Over the three weeks we managed to engage 132 participants of which 40 were children and young people who receive benefits-related free school meals. Each child who was eligible had lunch provided, with a total of 129 lunches prepared over the camp.

Signing for the Exiles in January 2017 from Shrewsbury Town, the 32-year-old began his career as a striker, playing for non-league sides Worthing and Bognor Regis Town. He was then invited to join the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain, where he was converted into a defender, and had a spell playing for Jerez Industrial. On his return to England, Demetriou joined Eastbourne Borough in January 2011 and subsequently played for Kidderminster Harriers, Shrewsbury Town and Cambridge United before joining Newport. Now one of the Exiles longest-serving players, he has racked up well over 200 appearances for the Exiles and has been everpresent so far this campaign.

Rowberry was announced as Newport’s manager last October, succeeding Michael Flynn who left after almost five years in charge. Rowberry played in Newport’s academy before retiring from playing as a 21-year-old to begin his coaching badges. He became one of the youngest individuals to complete his UEFA pro licence at the age of just 29. His career progressed quickly, with Rowberry leaving a role with Newport’s academy to join Cardiff City’s coaching staff in 2013. Promoted a number of times at Cardiff City, he worked as a first-team coach under manager Mick McCarthy and his predecessors, Neil Harris and Neil Warnock before taking up his first managerial role at Rodney Parade. Well-travelled striker, Bogle signed for the Exiles from Hartlepool United in the Summer. After 62 goals in just over 100 games in the National League North for Solihull Moors between 2012 and 2015, the 28-year-old moved to Grimsby where he netted 32 goals in 68 league games, helping them to the EFL via the play-offs in 2016. That, as well as a successful season in League Two for Grimsby, earned Omar a move to Wigan in the Championship, before a switch to Cardiff City in the season they finished 2nd and earned promotion to the Premier League. While at Cardiff, he had loan spells to Peterborough, Birmingham and Portsmouth across League One and the Championship before a temporary stint at ADO Den Haag in Holland’s Eredivisie. Spells at Charlton and Doncaster in League One followed before his move to Hartlepool where he scored 5 goals in 20 games in League Two last season.

MICHAEL FLYNN Michael Flynn managed Newport County to the League Two playoff final in 2019 and 2021. The midfielder began with hometown Newport, then played for Barry Town and helped Wigan Athletic win the Second Division title in 2002-03. Later with Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield and Bradford City, he rejoined Newport in July 2012 and featured in their 2013 Conference National play-off final triumph. He had a spell as player-coach before managing Newport from March 2017 until October 2021, also guiding them to the FA Cup fourth round in 2017-18 and fifth round in 2018-19. He became Walsall’s manager in February 2022.
COLIN ADDISON Colin Addison plotted Newport County’s 1982-83 promotion near-miss. Starting with York City, he starred in the top-flight for Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Sheffield United, becoming Hereford’s player-boss in October 1971. He managed their 1971-72 FA Cup run and 1972-73 promotion success. Later manager/coach of Durban City, Newport from February 1977 until May 1978, West Brom and Derby County, he managed Newport again between January 1982 and May 1985. He later had spells in charge of Al-Ahli, Celta Vigo, Atletico Madrid, Cadiz, Hereford again, Al-Arabi, Badajoz, Merthyr, Scarborough, Yeovil, Swansea, Forest Green and Barry.

JOHN RELISH John Relish managed Newport County to the Hellenic League Premier Division title in 1989-90. The left-back turned professional with Chester in October 1971 and moved to Newport in June 1974. Featuring in their 1979-80 promotion and Welsh Cup ‘double’ success, he also helped reach the ECWC quarter-finals in 1980-81. Scoring nine times in 338 League games, he was player-manager before joining Forest Green Rovers in October 1986. He became player-boss of the newly reformed Newport in June 1989 and remained in charge until June 1993, then managed Weston-Super-Mare, Merthyr Tydfil and Bath City. His son Lee also played for Newport.
Justin Edinburgh managed Newport County’s 2013 Conference National play-off final success. Starting at Southend, the left-back helped win promotion in 1989-90 and joined Spurs for £150,000 in July 1990. He helped win the FA Cup in 1991 and League Cup in 1999. Later with Portsmouth, he had a spell as Billericay’s playerboss, then managed Fisher, Grays Athletic and Rushden & Diamonds before Newport from October 2011 until February 2015, also taking them to the 2012 FA Trophy final. He managed Gillingham and Northampton, then Leyton Orient to the Conference National title and FA Trophy final in 2018-19. He died in June 2019.

Initially at Watford with his twin brother David, he joined Brentford in September 1989 and was leading marksman in their 1991-92 Third Division title triumph. ‘Deano’ moved to Wimbledon for £720,000 in July 1992 and was twice top scorer. Sold to Bolton Wanderers for £3,500,000 in October 1997, he then played for Coventry, Rushden & Diamonds, Wimbledon again and Havant & Waterlooville. He has managed Redbridge, Newport from June 2008 until January 2011, Aldershot, Chelmsford, Brentwood and Stratford.

The club’s recent tour of Holland was a huge success not only on the pitch but also off it, where the boys learned the Dutch language, sampled the culture and a variety of life skills that are acquired with a tour to a different country. From a football perspective it was an amazing experience seeing how Professional clubs in Holland coach, train and play. We played four fixtures whilst we were out in Holland. Firstly we played Bochum U19’s who had 7 internationals and we lost 3-0. The boys were superb against a strong physical side who were by far the best team the lads have ever come up against. This experience helped massively as we then went on to beat Ado Den Haag 2-0 goals from Brad Williams and josh Brodella. Then drew with Excelsior 1-1 with Brad Williams getting our goal. In the final game we played PEC Zwolle and ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Josh Brodella 2 and Brad Williams 1. Our hosts FC DeGraafshap were so welcoming and coached our boys, which was fantastic for the boys, but also for the staff to learn a different way of coaching. It really was a once in a lifetime experience and we are truly grateful for the opportunity given by the LFE and for Erasmus for funding the whole project.

Established in 2016, we began our journey in the North Riding Women’s Football league and now can boast a First Team, Reserve team and Under 18 girls’ team.
