MANAGER’S NOTES

SIMON WEAVER Since my last notes we’ve played three matches and continued our unbeaten start, seen Danilo Orsi get his first goals and hattrick for the club, as well as welcoming back Jack Diamond for the season on loan from Sunderland.

We just want him to give it what for and give us 100%. If he does that, he’ll entertain - we want him to be adventurous and really express himself. When we faced Mansfield for the second time in a matter of days on Saturday, he did just that.

The first of three fixtures was against Exeter City where if I’m honest, I think a draw was a fair result. Exeter played well and we were second best too many times during the first half. We had a stroke of luck with the red card and penalty, but we take it, and it gave us encouragement going into the second half. Although it didn’t materialise how we would have liked, after four games we would have accepted second place, two points off top.

Diamond and the whole team were magnificent, and I thought we deserved the three points. It challenged us going 1-0 down so early, especially in front of the Mansfield support, which was really passionate and behind the team but, our support couldn’t have been louder for the numbers that travelled, and I thought the lads delivered a really passionate performance. To equalise just a minute after conceding was so important and it was a great centre forward’s header from Luke. It was the perfect response to going behind and we know you can’t always respond with a goal straight away but seeing the character of the players, we were straight back on the front foot and that’s how we want to play. We were the pantomime villains that afternoon as Mansfield had two players sent off, but I’m proud of the team for showing discipline and not getting into trouble when tensions were rising. We said at half time, don’t turn their fans against us because that on top of everything else can make it a tough battle. We came through it and left a happy bunch knowing we can keep building this momentum.

We then went into our first Papa John’s Trophy fixture of the season and at home to Mansfield, we put in a performance that was really us. We made a few changes to the line-up with the likes of Nathan Sheron and Danilo Orsi coming into the starting XI and I thought those two along with the rest of the team were fantastic. The hunger and appetite to win the first and second ball and to be tenacious all over the park, it was there to see. I think that game showed that we’ve got a quality of depth that we’ve never had before. There’s great competition for places which has been giving me severe headaches when it comes to team selection but it’s great to see all the lads really wanting to play a part. Before the game, we announced the return of Jack Diamond, a player we’ve kept interest in ever since he returned to Sunderland following his loan spell with us while we were in the National League. He of course scored in the final at Wembley and played a key part in our promotion to the Football League. The deal has got all of us excited and I’m sure the fans will be feeling the same.

It's Newport next and after they asked to play on the Friday night, we thought yeah let’s try it, let’s see what it’s like on a Friday night in Harrogate, under the lights. Both games against them last season were tightly contested and fine margins made the difference in both encounters. We know the challenge ahead of us and we’re really looking forward to it. We’re in a good position, had a cracking start and hopefully we’ll have a great crowd and atmosphere to help us keep this going.

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

JOSH FALKINGHAM It’s been a good start to the season and looking at the full squad, it’s pleasing to see everyone has played their part and done really well when called upon. Things are clicking at the moment and that’s because everybody is working so hard for each other and we’re doing the basics really well. We won’t get carried away though - we know this league is a grind and war. We’ll find ourselves in difficult situations where we would have wanted more from games or find ourselves on the wrong sides of results, but if we can limit them this year compared to last, it’ll be a great sign of progression. We played Mansfield twice last week, first in the Papa John’s Trophy and then in the league and what those two games proved was that you can never be comfortable at this football club and I mean that in the best way possible. No matter who you are, there’s competition all over the pitch and everybody wants to start and is pushing to see their name on the team sheet. You’ve got to fight to keep your shirt and that’s one of the good things about this squad and that’s how we want it. Both performances against Mansfield were really good. It can be difficult when you play the same opposition within a matter of days, but it was crucial winning on the Tuesday night. I think going into the Saturday game, psychologically you’re already 1-0 up as you know you can beat them. Mansfield did of course get off to a great start which is what they were looking for but to hit straight back was massive. I’ve been there before when you’ve just scored and you’re buzzing to suddenly feeling deflated if the opposition goes and scores straight away. Luke managed to put in a bullet header which was brilliant and it knocked them. We reacted to the crowd and disappointment really well and I felt after that there was only going to be one winner.

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

It’s a bit of a change of scenery this weekend as we play on a Friday night but we’re really looking forward to it. We’re really enjoying our home games and the pitch is in fantastic nick. I want to mention the groundsman, Ian Bullock (Bully). The pitch has given us a massive boost, turning up to games knowing we’re going to be passing the ball around on a quality surface. Bully said he was going to get it right and the club have invested again to make sure it’s right. We know how vital home form is and we’re really looking forward to playing under the lights against a top opposition in Newport. They know how this league works, they’ve got quality across the pitch and they’ll be right up there come the end of the season. It’ll be a difficult game but with our mindset as it is at the moment, we’re enjoying the test. Week after week the way the fans have been following us, it’s been brilliant and we need them to continue to make the noise. I’ll continually say it, we hear them and so do the opposition. Once the fans get going it can become quite a hostile environment for the visiting side, so we want to keep performing and entertaining which puts the smiles on the faces of Town fans.

PLAYER IN FOCUS

LUKE ARMSTRONG “I was on absolute pennies and it was costing me almost more to travel to the matches than what I was earning. I was purely there to try to get a kick start in the game.” The honest words from Town’s new striker Luke Armstrong, who just five years ago was travelling hours to train and play part-time football in Scotland’s third division. From rejection after rejection as a trialist to scoring in a National League Play-Off Final which helped secure promotion for Hartlepool. This is Luke Armstrong’s story.

The son of former Premier League striker Alun Armstrong, who made over 350 professional appearances and scored against Inter Milan in the 2001 UEFA Cup, football was in Luke’s DNA. The life of a footballer's son means there’s always a chance you’ll be moving about the country and of course, there’s that “expectation” from peers who just assume you’ll become just as good if not better. For Armstrong, it was no different but he didn't join his first until he was 12-years-old. He played for Wolsingham’s junior side up in County Durham for a year before Middlesbrough took interest in the striker. Their scout Ron Bone saw the raw potential in the youngster and he joined their under 13s academy team. Straight away though, it was a huge shock for Armstrong.

14

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

“I remember the early days being really tough and it was a massive step up from where I was before,” Armstrong explains. “I’d gone from scoring six or seven every game finding it easy to moving to an academy and finding it tough. For those first couple years, I wasn’t at the level I need to be at.” Admitting he was a “small kid”, Armstrong found himself playing for the younger year groups and it wasn’t until under 15s where he began to fill out and believe he was a player worthy of being at Boro’s academy. That, alongside some dedicated one on one training sessions with his dad, led to Armstrong earning his youth team scholarship, a moment which Armstrong admits got him “a little too excited”.

“I was buzzing,” he says. “As a young kid, I think I probably got a little bit too excited being in and around the first team. We saw them every day and it made you think you weren’t too far away from making that step up but in reality, you’re miles from it." At this time, Middlesbrough’s academy had just been recognised as a ‘Category One academy' - the highest standard. It meant Boro’s youngsters would come up against teams with the same status; the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal etc… Armstrong’s team struggled and when his scholarship came to an end, he wasn’t offered a professional deal but Ron Bone told the striker they’d always keep an eye on him, (something worth remembering for later). Following his release, Armstrong assumed a League Two or even League One club would be straight in for the young attacker. He trialled at so many clubs but it wasn’t working out. There were players two/three years older than him fighting for that same spot. They were bigger, stronger and more experienced than Armstrong and it made for a tough period. “ I got sick of the trials, to be honest,” Armstrong confesses. “I remember speaking to my dad at that point saying I wasn't sure how many more I could take. I was sick of being the new guy walking into the changing rooms. My dad knows football and he was honest with us and said I just needed to play at whatever level I could or find a youth club and work up the pyramid again.” Out of the blue and under the leadership of Lee Clark, Birmingham City offered Armstrong a one year deal and a chance. However, just a couple of months after the striker’s arrival, Clark had been sacked and Armstrong was way down the pecking order. Armstrong admits he was “feeling the pressure” to find a club, wanting to make it as a footballer just like his dad but he makes clear that Alun

16

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

was happy to support him in whatever career he pursued. It was a case of if he was going to commit to the dream, expect his dad to be on him to make sure he was doing everything possible. The next step for Armstrong was to find a club and play football. That came in Scotland’s third division, over three hours away from where he lived. He played two trial games for Cowdenbeath and signed on but the logistics weren’t right. Armstrong was “earning pennies” from playing and it was the same if not less than the cost of travel to get to the Eastern part of Scotland. Working at his dad’s five-a-side centre meant Armstrong would only train once a week, return home at 3 am and then work. Nobody was happy with the situation. Armstrong left the club by January 2016 and was back on the hunt for another, preferably one a

little closer to home. He spent roughly six months on loan at Gateshead but he wanted and needed something permanent. “Fed up” of the process of trialling, Armstrong joined Northern Premier League Premier Division side Blyth Spartans. It’s where he would spend the 2016/17 campaign and also play under his dad, who took the role of manager in September that season. A change to a 4-4-2 formation saw Armstrong thrive up top alongside Dan Maguire and the pair helped the Spartans clinch the league title with three games to spare. It would turn out to be a defining moment for Armstrong’s career.

Celebrating scoring Town's first goal of the season against Rochdale

It was his first taste of success in the sport, he’d scored over 20 goals in his debut season and he did it with his dad putting faith in his ability. “I started loving the game again,” Armstrong smiles. "That season was when I realised I could achieve something when playing games." The striker, who had struggled to even get a trial with National League outfits was now attracting interest from Football League clubs. It was a crazy scenario. Remember Middlesbrough scout Ron Bone? Well, he kept his word to Armstrong and had been keeping tabs on the striker. Bone brought Armstrong into Boro’s under 23s setup and he was now a professional footballer. “I owe a lot to Ron Bone, he was the one who first spotted me and said they’d watch me. You never believe them when they say that but he meant it,” Armstrong adds. “I’d successfully gone and done what they wanted me to do, go and play games.” It was now 2017, Armstrong was 21-years-old and looking to break into the first team at the Riverside. He’d train and occasionally travel with the first team while Tony Pulis was manager but just didn’t manage to do enough to see his name on the team sheet. A loan move was the natural next step and Armstrong admits he had to “swallow his pride”

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

and drop down to the National League where he joined Gateshead for six months. Despite having an eight-week layoff due to injury, the striker managed 11 goals between the start of the season and January and he describes it as his “best season” when evaluating his performances. It forced the “big change” in Armstrong's career as suddenly, clubs in League One and League Two wanted to bring the powerful striker in on loan. Armstrong saw League One side Accrington Stanley as the pick of the bunch and joined them for the second half of the 2018/19 season. It was an up and down spell for Armstrong who was experiencing a completely different level of opposition, playing for a side in a relegation battle. At the end of the loan, Armstrong had two years left at Boro and had an honest conversation with the at the time manager Jonathan Woodgate. Now 23-years-old, Armstrong wanted game time and Salford City was the club willing to pay a fee to offer that. Boro believed it would be a great opportunity for Armstrong to be the key man at a club and he believed that as well. He arrived at the Ammies told he would be the player to win them promotion to League One and be the man to continue the journey thereafter. That didn’t happen.

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I

17

“I remember turning up to pre-season with there being 30 lads,” Armstrong explains. "They filtered out eventually but there were so many to pick from. I pulled my hamstring during my first appearance and it took eight weeks for me to get back to full fitness. I ended up scoring a league goal for them and a couple in the trophies but we weren’t playing very well and I wasn’t seeing much of the ball.” Rotation in the Salford team saw Armstrong’s chances diminish and by January he’d been frozen out. Two new strikers arrived that transfer window and then Covid hit. Armstrong returned the following season and started off in the manager's plans. That was until he was substituted at half time against Exeter, that's when he knew his time was up. The striker admits he “didn’t play my best football” while at Salford and didn’t enjoy being that far from his hometown but it was a move that just didn’t work out and in January 2020, he joined Hartlepool on loan. If his time at Salford is summed up by not enjoying his football and struggling to perform, his spell at Hartlepool would be the complete

18

opposite. Armstrong was told he would get a run of games but he needed to score goals, Hartlepool were relying on him to return to the Football League. They got on like a house on fire. “I loved it at Hartlepool, it was exactly what I needed,” Armstrong states. “I’d come from a season where I’d played very little and scored very few so I was asking myself whether I could be the man. I scored two on my debut which was a great start and it was a feeling of relief and joy. Those goals gave me belief that I could do it again and I did. The games were constant Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday but it was great to be back playing games again knowing the belief was there from those around me.” Between February and May, Pools went on a sixteen game unbeaten run and won eight consecutive home games. It led to a fourth-place finish in the National League and the Play-offs. First was Bromley and in front of the fans at Victoria Park, Armstrong and his teammates blew away their opponents in the first half. Three goals in seven minutes - one being from Armstrong - looked to have killed the tie but two goals in

the second half from Bromley, the latter coming in the 93rd minute, set up for a nervy final few minutes but they got through it. The next game would be against Stockport County and it was the opposite style of game. Both teams sitting back waiting for the other to make a mistake. A goal from Rhys Oates - now at Mansfield Town - in the 76th minute was the decider and set up a final with Torquay United. It was a final that will go down in the history books as one of the craziest the National League has seen. Torquay had a goal disallowed very early into the contest before Armstrong opened the scoring 20 minutes in and it looked to have settled the nerves within the stadium. In the second half, Torquay had another goal disallowed and it looked like the Gods were in Hartlepool’s favour. That was until a header from Torquay’s goalkeeper Lucas Colovan in the fifth minute of added time sent the game to extra time and then penalties. Four straight penalty misses - including Armstrong's - began the shoot out before the next six hit the back of the net. The game was decided when a good friend of Armstrong and Pools’ keeper Brad James saved Matt Buse’s effort. It was a match like no other and left Armstrong with so many different emotions. “It was one of the maddest games in my career. Scoring in that game was a feeling on another level, the best I’ve had in my career. The ups and downs were unbelievable. From the lows at Salford to achieving something with Hartlepool and then realising, of course I want to play football for a living. The celebrations that followed were unbelievable. We went back to the hotel with our families and it was just really emotional

for everyone. You wouldn’t think a game of football could do that but seeing how proud the families were, it’s what you dream of." There was little downtime for Armstrong as he knew a permanent move away from Salford was just around the corner. His destination would be Harrogate Town as Simon Weaver saw the attacker as a great fit for Town's style of play. A key thing for Armstrong when choosing Harrogate was that he could see Weaver “believed” in his players. Something the striker knew was so important for himself. “The way the team plays, nobody wants to play against them. Everyone is fit and plays good football, working hard for every single thing. The team is known for never giving up and the manager believes in players, that’s what I want. People say this is a family club and it really is. The belief we have can take us anywhere so we’ve just got to find a way to keep going. For me, I’m just focusing on each game that comes, that’s all you can do really; do as well as you can each game, reflect on where you can get better and little by little keep on improving."

After beginning life in 1912, Newport suffered financial difficulties in the 1980's, with a double relegation costing them their 60-season stay in the Football League in 1988, and in February 1989, the Club was wound up and expelled from the Conference. A group of supporters reformed the Club in 1989 and were admitted to the Hellenic League. They won the Hellenic League in 1989–90, and in 1995, when they returned to Rodney Parade, were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division. In 2004 Newport took their place in the inaugural Conference South season. It wasn’t until 2010 they returned to the Conference, and then got back to the Football League in 2013 beating Wrexham 2-0 in the play-off final. After staving of relegation in the most dramatic fashion in 2017, Newport, under Mike Flynn, have gone from strength to strength and impressive cup runs and two play-off finals in the last three years have earned them an enviable reputation. After the heartache of the controversial loss to Morecambe at Wembley last season, hopes are again high at Rodney Parade. There has been plenty of activity this summer with the club losing key players including Josh Sheehan, Joss Labadie and Liam Shephard, but Mike Flynn is an excellent coach and has been busy rebuilding his squad to absorb the departures and there's no doubt the Exiles will be challenging at the top end of the division come May.

IN THE DUGOUT

Mike Flynn

Appointed: March 2017 Age: 40

Mike Flynn was appointed as Newport manager late in the 2016-17 season, tasked with keeping The Exiles - 11 points adrift at the bottom of League Two - in the Football League which he managed with victory against Notts County on the last day of the season. The Welshman has a long-standing relationship with Newport both as a player and now as manager. Flynn’s playing career started with Newport in the late 1990s. He had further spells with Wigan Athletic, Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City before returning to Rodney Parade to become a Newport player for the third time in 2012 and playing in the squad that won promotion back to the Football League in 2013. The 40-year-old’s association with the Club continued with roles as a Coach, Academy Manager, Club Ambassador and Football and Business Development Director, before he was appointed caretaker manager then permanent manager in 2017.

Goalkeeper Joe Day rejoined County this Summer having been released by Championship side Cardiff City, the club he left Rodney Parade for just under two years ago. The 30-year-old previously spent five seasons with County after a loan from Peterborough United became a permanent transfer. Day racked up 243 appearances for the Exiles, the last of them, the agonising League Two playoff final lost to Tranmere in 2019. During his time at Cardiff, Day spent loan spells in League One with AFC Wimbledon and, most recently, Bristol Rovers last season.

Midfielder Ed Upson became the Exiles’ third signing of the summer. He started his career with Ipswich Town, signing pro after progressing through the Tractor Boys’ academy. Loan spells with Stevenage and Barnet followed before a permanent switch to Yeovil Town, where he made 148 appearances, helping the Glovers to the Championship in 2012-13. Upson, who has also represented England at U19 and U21 level, then spent three years with Millwall prior to a stint with MK Dons. The 31-year-old spent the last three seasons with Bristol Rovers - taking his appearances in the third tier to 310.

Matty Dolan is one of the Exiles’ longest-serving players, having joined the club four years ago and was named club captain for this season. The versatile midfielder, who was deployed in County’s defence last term, scooped the Exiles' player of the season accolade. The 28-yearold has made 170 appearances during his time at Rodney Parade, playing a pivotal role in County’s successes under boss Mike Flynn. After a calf injury in the opening weekend win at Oldham kept Dolan out for a number of weeks, the influential captain made a welcome return for their EFL Trophy win over Plymouth last Tuesday.

BUSY SUMMER FOR NCS PARTICIPANTS It’s been a busy summer for 78 young people in Harrogate who have just finished their summer National Citizen Service (NCS) flagship programme! In partnership with the Harrogate Town Community Foundation, the 15-17 year olds gave over 2000 hours to the local community while making friendships and great memories along the way. They took part in new challenges, experienced exciting activities and developed vital skills that will support them later in life.

32

Five social action projects were planned and delivered in the Harrogate district which supported charities such as Harrogate Mind. The youngsters were also involved projects which supported older people, the Harrogate District Hospital and the Harrogate Homeless Project. In total, Harrogate’s youngsters raised over £1500 which was donated and then used to create care packages which included much needed items for those in need. For example, one group named

‘A little helping hand’ raised over £450 for the Harrogate Homeless Project. 20 care packages were created which included shower gel, face masks, toiletries as well as chocolate and sweets. After still having money left over, the group decided on request by Harrogate Homeless Project that they bought fresh and frozen food for those currently living within the homeless shelter, alongside five sleeping bags donated by a member of our group. The remaining money was donated as cash to the Harrogate

FARSLEY CELTIC 2 (Swales 28, Heald 75)

Town Ladies opened their league account with a hard-earned win against Farsley Celtic in front of a bumper crowd at Rossett Sports Centre last Sunday. From the off, Town took the game to Farsley hitting the woodwork three times in the opening 10 minutes, but despite dominating, couldn’t break through a stubborn defence until the 27th-minute when Nat Eustance looped a ball into the box which Beth Jennings bravely headed into the net, suffering a nasty injury to her eye in the process. The lead was shortlived however, as Farsley got an instant equaliser from the kick off. After more sustained pressure, Town got a deserved second as Shannon Beal cushioned the ball down for Emma Elliot to slot home and make it 2-1 at half time. The second half was a real scrap with Farsley being more physical and going long. Town however, continued to try and play their game, and despite taking numerous knocks, got up and went again. Town's onslought

on the Farsley goal continued and their keeper pulled off some great saves, particularly from a long range Beth Jennings effort that was destined for the top corner but tipped round the post. From the resulting corner, Cassidy Lane delivered to the front post where Shannon Beal flicked on and the Farsley keeper parried the ball into the goal for 3-1. In the last 15 minutes, Farsley were twice denied by stand-in Town keeper Becky Wilson, but she could do nothing to stop a long range strike from Farsley's Jess Heald which nestled in the top corner. In the last few minutes, Farsley threw everything at Town in search of an equaliser but the defence stood firm for a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

I LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP

by Mark Walker, PA Media

WEEKEND FIXTURES FRI Barrow v Colchester United Harrogate Town v Newport County

Harrogate climbed top of the table after extending their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win at nine-man Mansfield. Simon Weaver's side have dropped only two points from their opening five matches and have a game in hand on most of their top-seven rivals. Rhys Oates' early opener for Mansfield was cancelled out by Luke Armstrong and Jack Muldoon put Harrogate in front during first-half stoppage time. Ollie Clarke's 73rd-minute dismissal for his challenge Jack Diamond sparked a mass melee and Mansfield midfielder Stephen Quinn was also shown a red card for clashing with Josh Falkingham. Harrogate made their extra men count with nine minutes left when George Thomson headed in from a corner. Forest Green were edged off top spot on goal difference after they were held to a 0-0 draw at Exeter. Bradford are third following a 1-1 home draw against Walsall, who played the second half with 10 men. Elliot Watt put the Bantams ahead and after Jack Earing's equaliser, visiting captain Joss Labadie was sent off for violent conduct following a foul on Gareth Evans. Swindon maintained their promising start with a 1-1 draw at Stevenage, thanks to Jack Payne's stoppage-time penalty after Ben Coker had given the home side a second-half lead. Northampton beat 10-man Scunthorpe 2-0 at Sixfields to move up to fifth. Iron defender Emmanuel Onariase saw red after 20 minutes for his challenge on Danny Rose, who later broke the deadlock before Sam Hoskins sealed victory in added time.

At the other end of the table, Oldham’s poor start continued as they lost 3-0 at Boundary Park to Barrow, for whom Ollie Banks, Offrande Zanzala and Joe Grayson were all on target. Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
