We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Paul Simpson and his staff at Carlisle who visit the EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon.
Our last home game was a horrible experience for everyone and we are desperate to make amends. We were dealt a harsh blow by a powerful outfit in Newport who took full advantage of our performance on the day. The fans remained patient with us, but we deserved the reception we got and were in full agreement with that, we deservedly came away with nothing. We then had a bit of a hangover affect in the first half of our trip to Hartlepool, we were a bit soft and gifted them goals which gave them too much of a foothold in the game. We played a lot better in the second half, had more intensity and if not for some great saves would have been right back in the game.
The lads carried that second half performance into Sutton where I felt we deserved to come away with something. It’s always a hard place to go, but for a relatively new team we looked organised throughout and worked hard, while handling a lot of what Sutton threw at us. We came away feeling positive about the performance and we will be stronger for it, with a bit more composure In the final third we could have come away with at least a point. Josh Coley and Dior Angus both looked lively and I’m sure will add a lot to our group going forward, along with Danny Grant and Sam Folarin who we were delighted to be able to bring in on deadline day. All four lads are chomping at the bit to be in the side today and play in front of our home fans for the first time. Each individual is capable of exciting the crowd and give us a new dimension in attack.
There is no better example of how much of an impact our fans can make on our performance than the last time Carlisle were in town. The players being out signing autographs and interacting with the fans before the game gave everyone a huge lift, myself included, and we took that energy into our performance from the firstWe’llwhistle.bedoing everything we can today to put our last few results behind us and send you all home happy with three points. I suffered a minor setback against Hartlepool that caused me to come off, which wasn’t ideal, but these things happen in football and I will make sure I’m working twice as hard to get back fit as soon as possible. When you’re on a run of defeats like we are, the biggest thing is hard work and togetherness. When everyone is pulling in the same direction then the results will start turning, the aim is to try and get on a run that then brings back the confidence and momentum to the squad.
Our last meeting with Carlisle sticks in the mind as a really good day for everyone involved at the club, it showed the togetherness that not just the players have, but the whole club. That is the unique factor about us, we might not be the size of the majority of clubs in this league, but we saw how passionate the fans were on that special Supporters Day. It gives players a huge boost when you have that backing from the fans that pay to come and watch week in week out, creating an atmosphere for the lads to go out there and express themselves the way we know we can. We’ll need you with us all the way today against a side we have always had difficult games against and one that have been established in the Football League for many years. It’s going to be a really tough challenge ahead and for us to get the result and points we are desperately wanting we are going to have to really work hard, with you backing us from the first minute.

Deadline day was a busy one for us, it’s exciting times for the lads coming in and was really good to see them all go straight in to the squad. They have all added something to the group and are all buzzing to get into the side and help us get some victories.
It has been a tough five months for me, especially as someone who hasn’t been used to injuries of that length of time, so on a personal note it was really pleasing to be back out there.

Born in Souhfields, Southwest London in a coal cellar during a blitz on 9 July 1944, my Dad represented his school at football and boxing and was picked for London schoolboys. He then played for Wimbledon at schoolboy level until he was 18. At 19, he moved to Harrogate with his Mum, sister and girlfriend who would become his wife and of course the Mum to me and my sisters Angela and Wendy. In Yorkshire he played for Hookstone Rovers, Pateley Bridge, Harrogate Utd and CEGB as well as representing a Harrogate U23 young Liberal side who won the National Cup, scoring 23 goals in 6 games. He was part of the Belford team who won the Sunday County Cup, the only Harrogate Sunday side to have ever won it.

A massive Chelsea fan, he would watch them and Fulham in his childhood in alternate weeks with his Grandad. His hero was Jimmy Greaves, saying he was the best English footballer who’s ever lived. Jonny Haynes was a another he loved. Better passer of the ball than Hoddle and Gascoigne he would say. Then there was Harrogate Town. His adopted town. He loved that football club and watched them for over 40 years on a regular basis. Often travelling to away games long before they achieved their current level.

“It was a big commitment because I don’t come from a family that has a lot of money so for them to be driving me around it was tough to be able to even find the money to keep taking me.

“My brother used to play football when he was younger and I used to watch his games, that’s what got me into football really.
“Without them I don’t even know where I would be because some families might not be able to take their kids places and if they didn’t take me to training all the time maybe I wouldn’t be in this position I am now, so I am very grateful to my family.
A boyhood Leeds United supporter, Miles Welch-Hayes has wasted no time in settling in at his first Yorkshire club, Harrogate Town.
“As a kid used to love football, played out on the football court every day, used to play with the older boys quite a bit, then joined a Sunday league team Marston Saints.
When a move to Harrogate came to fruition it gave Miles the chance to move in with his Grandma in Huddersfield, where his Dad had grown up. Miles himself grew up in Wolvercoat, a small village in Oxford with his parents, brother and two sisters and has his family to thank for where he is today.
“It’s good to spend more time with my family now, I used to see my Grandma only once every three years, but since signing for Harrogate I’ve probably spent the most time with her I ever have in my life, which is really good.”
“My mum and dad used to take me to football a lot, my mum would take me to training straight after finishing work and my dad would take me to games that were really far away.

A quick reminder of the highs and lows of football was just around the corner, with a swift departure from Oxford and professional football paving the way for a move to National League South Bath. “I just wanted to go and play more games so, I spoke to Michael Appleton who was Manager at the time and he said he couldn’t afford to have me at the club and they needed to build with senior players.
That family effort and commitment paid off when Miles earned a first professional contract at Oxford and made his first team debut on 17th August 2016 away at Fleetwood. “I signed for Oxford at U13 level and worked my way up from there really. Signing my first contract was a great moment, but I never thought I had made it, you’re still young and I only signed a short deal so doesn’t mean you are solid at a club, you’ve still got to work your way up, but it was a big moment, it’s your dream as a kid to sign a pro“Notcontract.longafter that came my debut, from what I can remember I was nervous but wasn’t really, really nervous, I said to myself it’s my debut so just go out and enjoy it. It was a great experience to be out on the pitch in front of fans for the first time.”
“She’s in the school team now and I was speaking to her about the Euros and I think it makes young girls want to play football more and gives them inspiration they can go on to achieve big things.”
Miles remains close with his family in Oxford and in particular his 11-year-old sister whose interest in the game has been heightened by the recent Lionesses’ Euros win.
“When dropping down to part time football I said to myself give it a season, I didn’t want to get another job just yet so any days off I had I trained and went to the gym, and it paid off.
“Bath was a small club but the fans were really good and I enjoyed my time there, though the aim was always to go back into the league.”
“I felt it was a good decision for me to go somewhere and play and ended up getting in the National League South Team of the Season.
That move back to the EFL would materialise when Miles secured a move to financially troubled Macclesfield, which proved a difficult but rewarding time in the young defender’s career.
“The ongoing money situation made it difficult, out of the two years I was there I got paid late eight or nine times.
“Looking back I feel like the tough times were a good experience for me though. Having gone through that has made me stronger and I feel like it could have happened for a reason.
BATH WAS A SMALL CLUB BUT THE FANS WERE REALLY GOOD AND I ENJOYED MY TIME THERE, THOUGH THE AIM WAS ALWAYS TO GO BACK INTO THE LEAGUE.
“It was a tough time there, we were in a relegation battle and weren’t getting paid, it was a bit of a shambles really, the morale in the club was really low, everyone was down.
“I enjoyed living up North, I knew I would have to move away at some point so I was ready for it.

“I couldn’t really do anything about that, I knew I needed to go and play games so wasn’t too disheartened, more excited to see what was out there. I had been on loan at Bath already so the Manager Gary Owers spoke to me and said if you want to come here at the end of the season then let me know.
“Everyone here shares that ambition, no one wants to be comfy and just settle, the aim is to keep pushing on, that comes from the Manager who is constantly pushing us forward.
“I think we’ve got a good group and a lot of quality in here, off the pitch I think we’ve got a really tight group and everyone’s got really good attitudes, which will definitely help us through the hard times.
With the club’s situation worsening, Welch-Hayes was left in a tough situation; Colchester had seen their initial bid for the player turned down and Macclesfield were reluctant to let their defender go, despite their off-pitch turmoil.
“The first season I played a lot of games and really enjoyed my time, but the second season was quite tough, I had a lot of injuries and, as a player that doesn’t really get injured, I didn’t really know what was causing it.I pulled my hamstring but came back too early and pulled it again so, then a month later I kicked a ball, not even that hard, and pulled my quad so I was out for a couple of months. That was really frustrating, it’s not nice being out and you just want to be with the boys helping the team .
“At the end of year two my contract was coming to an end, there had been talks of a potential loan move to Harrogate before, so when my agent spoke with the Gaffer and I realised he wanted to bring me in I was happy to make the move.”
“A team that sticks together through thick and thin is so important in League Two where anyone can beat anyone. The league can be unpredictable, but if you’ve got a tight group that help each other and stick together that’s so important. In any league when teams go through tough times if you’ve got a tough group of boys that can stick together then we can go on to do good things.”
Now approaching his tenth appearance at Town, Welch-Hayes is convinced that The EnviroVent Stadium is the right place to take his career to the next
“It was tough on the pitch too because we weren’t really doing that well and got caught up in a relegation battle. When Sol Campbell came in that really helped me, having a world class defender like that helped me improve, he was hands-on on the training ground and I learnt a lot from him on a personal level.”
“Thelevel.aim is to just work my way up really, we’re in League Two at the minute, but the aim is to play as high as I can really and see what I can achieve.
The stressful dispute was eventually settled in a courtroom, with Miles allowed to terminate his contract and join the U’s, securing his immediate future in League Two.

10 / LOST 33 In his younger days Bernard Cross played for the Harrogate YMCA in 1932 and was one of the players to join the breakaway YMCA group which joined the new Harrogate Hotspurs side of 1935/36 (which was named HarrogateTown in 1948). He scored the Hotspurs first ever goal in the opening match of the season at home to Pannal in the Harrogate & District League. In those days they played on East Stray on the corner of Knaresborough Road and Wetherby Road and the team played in Amber shirts and black shorts and changed at Christ Church School. During the Second World War, Hotspurs used Wetherby Road as their ground and were allowed to continue playing their after the War as the new Town team following their success in the West Riding County Amateur league. For 1953/54 Cross took over from Walter Cook as Manager of now West Yorkshire League Division One, Harrogate Town having arrived after managing the Market District club in Leeds. He guided Town to the West Yorkshire League Cup Semi-final that season, followed by a mid-table finish the in 1954/55 as well as overseeing them win the 1955 Whitworth Cup beating Boroughbridge in the Final at Wetherby Road. He was replaced by Jack (Boss) Townrow from Railway Athletic.

Pool AFC is at the heart of the village community of Pool In Wharfedale. With 2 senior teams in the West Yorkshire league and 12 junior age groups including 3 girls teams. Pool under 11s girls have played one full season and have gone from strength to strength. The girls are super proud to be flag bearing for Harrogate Town following their experience doing the same for Harrogate Town Ladies last season. This summer, we have had a wonderful time delivering NCS in and around Harrogate and the district. The young people were able to positively impact local charities and organisations and participate in lots of fun, engaging, team-building activities. The latest suicides statistics showed that in 2018, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, more than 6,800 people died by suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy. And we know that suicide is preventable, it’s not inevitable. But not being OK is still widely stigmatised.
In one of the last reports of those taking their own life in North Yorkshire: • 82% were male • 25% were in the 40 to 49 age group • 45% were employed at the time of their death • 60% were single (including individuals who were widowed, divorced or separated)

PAUL SIMPSON Age: 56 Appointed: Feb 2022 Paul Simpson returned as Carlisle first-team coach in February, replacing Keith Millen with 15 games left and United second bottom of League Two. He immediately turned things around winning six of his first seven games in charge which saw the Cumbrians climb clear of trouble. Previously he became a local hero when he took over a struggling Carlisle during the 2003/04 season, galvanising the Blues and leading them to back-to-back promotions from the Conference into League One through 2004/05 and 2005/06. After an 800 game playing career at the likes of Manchester City, Derby, Wolves, Blackpool and Rochdale, he got his first managerial role at Dale before taking the reins at Carlisle, Preston, Shrewsbury and Stockport. In-form striker Kristian Dennis signed for the Blues on an 18-month deal during the January 2022 transfer window. The 32-year-old began his career at Macclesfield Town, but left the club in 2010 going on to play for Woodley Sports, Mossley and Curzon Ashton.His impressive spell with Curzon saw him bag 72 goals in two seasons, which earned him a three-year spell with Stockport County. A return to Macclesfield on loan brought him 27 goals in 44 appearances, and that caught the eye of Chesterfield, who secured his services in the summer of 2016. Two seasons with the Spireites added 31 goals in 90 appearances to the tally, and there was more to come with 22 goals in 64 outings for Notts County. He moved north of the border to play for Scottish Premier League outfit St Mirren in the summer of 2020, before joining Carlisle after 40 appearances.

Carlisle-born midfielder Owen Moxon joined Carlisle from Annan Athletic in the summer. Having started his career across the border with Queen of the South, having left United’s academy as a 16-year-old, the 24-year-old was snapped up by Annan in the summer of 2017 and a haul of 15 goals in 148 games for the Galabankies brought outside interest, with his 46 appearances during the 2021/22 season culminating with the play-off double-header against Edinburgh City. He was voted into the PFA Scottish League Two Team of the Year and also scooped the Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year for his efforts. This season he leads the charts in terms of assists for United.

IAN McFARLANE Ian McFarlane almost managed Carlisle United to the top-flight in 1970-71. Initially with Aberdeen, the full-back joined Chelsea in August 1956 and later played for Leicester City and Bath City, featuring in their 1959-60 Southern League title triumph and 1963-64 FA Cup run. He was assistant-boss at Middlesbrough and Manchester City before becoming Carlisle’s manager in January 1970. His most notable signing was Stan Bowles and he remained in charge until July 1972. Later assisting Bob Stokoe at Sunderland, he had a spell as Leicester City’s assistantmanager, then was Leeds United’s chief scout. He died in June 2019.
PAUL SIMPSON Former England U-21 winger Paul Simpson managed Carlisle United to the League Two title and League Trophy final in 2005-06. He began with Manchester City and joined Oxford United in October 1988, then Derby County in February 1992. Helping win promotion in 1995-96, he later played for Wolves and Blackpool, becoming Rochdale’s player-boss in March 2002. He took charge of Carlisle in October 2003 and also plotted their 2004-05 Conference play-off final triumph. Moving to Preston in June 2006, then Shrewsbury, Stockport, Northwich and England U-20s, he rejoined Carlisle as manager in February 2022.
GREG ABBOTT Greg Abbott managed Carlisle United’s 2011 League Trophy final success. Initially with hometown Coventry City, the midfielder joined Bradford City in September 1982 and starred in their 1984-85 Third Division title triumph. He moved to Halifax Town in July 1991, then Guiseley before reuniting with Terry Dolan at Hull City. Later a youth coach at Leeds United, he was Carlisle’s manager from December 2008 until September 2013, also guiding them to the 2010 League Trophy final. He coached at Notts County, Bradford City, Mansfield Town and Notts County again. Now back at Carlisle as head of recruitment.

MERVYN DAY Former England U-23 goalkeeper Mervyn Day managed Carlisle United to a promotion and Auto Windscreens Shield ‘double’ in 1996-97. Signing professional for West Ham in March 1973, he starred in their 1975 FA Cup final triumph and was a ECWC finalist in 1976. He joined Orient in July 1979, then played for Aston Villa and Leeds United. Moving to Carlisle in July 1993, he assisted Mick Wadsworth before succeeding him in charge from January 1996 until September 1997. He later assisted Alan Curbishley at Charlton and West Ham, then held scouting posts at Leeds, Brighton and West Brom.
BOB STOKOE Experienced manager Bob Stokoe plotted Carlisle United’s 1981-82 promotion success. A former centre-half, he starred in Newcastle United’s 1955 FA Cup final triumph and became Bury’s player-boss in December 1961. He then managed Charlton Athletic and Rochdale before taking charge of Carlisle in October 1968, leading them to the League Cup semi-finals in 1969-70. Briefly Blackpool’s boss, he managed Sunderland’s 1973 FA Cup final triumph and had spells back in charge of Bury, Blackpool and Rochdale, then was Carlisle’s manager from September 1980 until May 1986. He died in early 2004.
BILL SHANKLY Former Scotland international right-half Bill Shankly began his legendary managerial career with Carlisle United. Initially with Glenbuck Cherrypickers, he joined Carlisle in July 1932 and moved to Preston in July 1933. He starred in their 1933-34 promotion success and two FA Cup finals, returning to Carlisle as manager in March 1949. Making several shrewd signings before taking charge of Grimsby Town in July 1951, he managed Workington and Huddersfield prior to becoming Liverpool’s boss in December 1959. He plotted a glorious era at Anfield and retired in July 1974, residing locally until his death in September 1981.

The boys put in a very good performance and deserved to come away with the three points having dominated both halves, but unfortunately could not convert their superior possession and chances created into goals. That being said, the lads can take many positives from the game both individually and collectively, but must now be more clinical in front of goal. Town defended from the front, demonstrating excellent pressing and cover from our defensive line as well as dominating possession and playing some of the best football since the formation of the academy. The closest Town came to scoring was when Finn O’Boyle hit the post in the first half whilst the Pools’ goalkeeper made a number of good saves to keep the scoreline goalless. Despite the frustration of not taking all three points, the lads can take plenty of positives into the this mornings’ fixture when they travel to Lincoln City for a really stern test.

TOWN 0 SOUTH SHIELDS 1 In the week leading up to Sunday’s match, the squad worked on how to respond in key moments and how to achieve success in each instance and took this mentality into the game. Against a physical South Shields team, the girls achieved success in their individual and collective duels and can be incredibly proud of their performances despite the defeat. During the game Town created hald a dozen really good moments. The first being a goal scored by Charlotte Broad that was ruled out as marginal offside, following a great pass from midfield by Jasmine Blunt to Olivia Johnson, who was a constant thorn in the South Shields side. Kate Donnan had a fantastic strike bounce off the crossbar and following a fantastic bit of build up play, Bella Devereux was denied by a great save from the visiting keeper. Alex Macdonald deputised in goal today and had a faultless performance, receiving the player of the match. Although not the result the performance merited, the girls can be very proud of their performance and take the positive moments from the game as a catalyst and maximise each one within training and the remainder of the season.
