THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER Reflecting on our last two matches, and first Stevenage, I expected a lot more from us. After the first 10 minutes we weren’t inventive enough or backed ourselves enough on the ball. It became too predictable and easy for Stevenage to sniff us out. We could count ourselves lucky as well as there were three occasions where we had to clear off our own goal line. Everybody knows how consistent we are with our energy and shape so it was a disappointing afternoon but still another point to add onto the tally. We were straight back at it on the Monday and the reaction from the entire group was a good one. It meant we made the trip to a rainy Oldham in high spirits and came away with a result that we take all day long. It wasn’t a magnificent performance from start to finish but not all days will we see a really commanding performance with wave after wave of attack. We found a way, all dug in and changed system a couple of times but it was essentially about finding a way of being calm as much as we could against a team who had dangerous players playing where they want, when they want, which creates a very dangerous opposition but all in all we did enough. We scrapped hard and that’s particularly important when we don’t play at our most fluent. It’s a long season so it’s a good habit to get into, to win games when we aren’t 100%. The lads can take confidence from that and it’s all

part of creating that winning mentality in the changing room. We don’t need to panic during matches, just stay compact, get through the difficult spells and that’s exactly what we did against Oldham. Focusing on this Saturday’s opponents, Scunthorpe come into the contest struggling for results but have still put in competitive performances which means we can’t take anything for granted. We learned last season how tight this league is and last year’s disappointing home result against Scunthorpe is one we want to put right. That night we were miles off it but I feel we’ve learned and grown a lot since then. We’re hoping for a really good turnout for what will feel like a derby game. We had the first team, ladies team and youth team all win last weekend so there’s a good feeling around the club and we’re really up for the next challenge knowing we have a point to prove.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM After picking up four points from our last two fixtures, we’re back at home and ready to take on Scunthorpe United in what’s an opportunity to put right what went wrong in this fixture last season. It was certainly one to forget at the time but as a player the next time the meeting does come around, you can’t help but see it as a real opportunity to put things right. In our last home game, against Stevenage, it was an afternoon where not everything went the way we wanted but we still have to take the positives from it. Last season, those were the games we probably lost a by single goal due to a switch off moment. I believe as much as it wasn’t a great performance and it’s frustrating for the fans, we’ve got to stick at it knowing in front of the home crowd, they can make all the difference. A point away from home seems to be massive for whoever faces us at The EnviroVent Stadium, and I guess that shows our progression when we’re disappointed not to get the three points against well-established EFL clubs. Last Saturday away at Oldham, like at home against Stevenage, we didn’t get all things going our way, but we did manage to take a chance in the first half. We were on the wrong side of those many times last season and I feel like we’ve learned from that. It is a positive knowing that on days where we aren’t at our best, we’re continuing to pick up points. Who knows what that extra point or two could do for us in four/five months’ time so it’s really important we keep grinding out results and grinding out wins if we can. In the second half against Oldham we felt good and in a position where we were going to score a handful of goals which is pleasing. We’ve got some really dangerous players that can have 5-10 minutes spells that can really affect games.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
We’re in a good place generally and now we’ve just got to try as best we can to improve our home performances, and if we do that, we’ve got every opportunity to turn our place into somewhere where no visiting team wants to play. This Sunday is World Mental Health Day and it’s rightly becoming a huge talking point all around the world and in football as well. Everyone is starting to talk more openly, and I’d like to think we’re getting better as a society at dealing with and understanding mental health problems. I think the more people talk and get things off their chest, it can make all the difference. Even the little things, when they build up can lead to big issues and make things 10 times more difficult. We all need to keep talking and as footballers and a group of lads, if there’s anything we can do to help with that, then we will.

PLAYER IN FOCUS
LEWIS PAGE
To sign a 25-year-old yet to reach his peak but with Europa League and League One experience already under his belt, it would be a coup for clubs throughout the EFL. This summer, Town did exactly that following the arrival of left-back Lewis Page. The Enfield born defender joined Weaver’s squad after leaving Exeter City at the end of last season, having previously played for Cambridge, Charlton and West Ham where he shared the pitch with the likes of Declan Rice and Dimitri Payet. A career that has had highs as well as injury lows, this is the story of Lewis Page’s journey to Harrogate Town. By Henry Whitaker Page grew up in North London and was a selfconfessed “sporty kid”. He played football, cricket and golf to a high standard and before he reached his teenage years had to decide which sport he wanted to focus on. The defender first kicked a football playing for Bishop Stortford Swifts and by the age of nine had already been scouted by West Ham United. Page was also involved with Hertfordshire’s County golf team, competing with other youngsters whose handicaps would put the local club member to shame. Ideally, Page would have played both sports for longer but a continuous clash of dates meant he had to pick one over the other. He chose football - not a bad decision. In his early years with the Irons, especially the first, Page admits it was a case of getting used to surroundings and trying to fit into a group that had been together since six years old. “The first year was me getting used to the tempo,” Page recalls. “I remember playing a school game in the afternoon before then going to West Ham in the evening and the difference in levels was huge so I had to get used to that. It wasn’t until I was 15/16 where I felt I could handle things physically.” The now left-back had always played on that side of the pitch, sometimes as more of a winger
12
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
but the majority of his time was spent marking opposition wingers from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United. It was a big test for Page who admits he was a small kid, but it was all part of the challenge and becoming as technically good as possible until his body started to fill out. Page reveals how his lack of physicality almost cost his youth team scholarship as he reckons three out of the six coaches believed that would let him down. However, the defender was offered a scholarship and played almost every game in his first year. West Ham United is famous for producing talented players from their academy; Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Mark Noble are just a few. In Page’s youth team, he played alongside the likes of Declan Rice, Reece Oxford, Martin Samuelsen and Josh Cullen, all of who now play at a high level - Rice, in particular, was a near ever-present for England’s Euro 2020 campaign. The Iron's youth team came second in their under 18s league playing against the best academies in the country, and a few years later they'd go on to win the Under-21 Premier League Cup.

who would hand him his first-team debut. The defender often found himself training with the first team despite only being 18 years old and it was a “massive jump” being around the likes of Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll, but an experience he loved. Pages’ West Ham debut came in July 2015 in the club’s first Europa League qualifier match of the season with the defender playing the full 90 minutes in the Irons’ 3–0 victory over Lusitanos. It was a day that will live long in the memory of Page, who weeks before making his debut, sensed the chance was coming.
Before that though, Page would sign his first professional contract with the East London club. “It’s been my biggest moment, 100%,” Page states. “I remember getting in the car and getting a call from my agent saying I'd been offered two years and I was absolutely buzzing. I immediately started ringing all my mates and family and that’s what makes it my favourite moment. They were happy for me and I was moving into digs with some of the other lads so that was a nice feeling knowing I was going to be with my mates, having a laugh and doing what I love with them.” Like many footballers, a huge part of them making it professional is down to the time, energy and support from their parents. For Page, it was no different and he speaks fondly of his dad Martin, in particular, who would always encourage him to achieve the dream. “There were times throughout the academy years where I just wanted to pack it in as I didn’t think I could handle it but I don’t think my dad would have kept taking me 3-4 nights a week if he didn’t think I had a chance. He’s probably my biggest critic, giving me the classic rundown of what I did right and wrong on the journey home but if I didn’t have him doing that I think I would have taken my foot off the pedal, he kept me on it.” Sam Allardyce was the man in charge when Page signed his pro deal but it was Slaven Bilic

“We came back to pre-season really early, before June had ended so I thought there was a good chance I’d be in the squad for the qualifiers. An injury to one of our fullbacks meant I came into the starting XI and I played really well, probably one of my best performances. I was just full of adrenaline for the entire time,” Page continues. “Upton Park was packed as it was our first European game in years so it was a great atmosphere. I was s******g myself though, I was properly nervous. I knew roughly 10 days before that it was coming so I had all that time for it to build up and the night before I was a bit stressed.” Page went on to feature in the second leg of the third qualifying round but found himself on the losing side as Romanian side Astra Giurgiu beat West Ham 4-3 on aggregate. The day was made even worse for Page when in the closing stages of the match, he got a nasty ankle injury which kept him out of action for over two months, following an unnecessary challenge on the defender in the dying moments of the match. On his return to action, Page spent time with the under 21s, mainly to build up his fitness before venturing out on loan. He joined Cambridge for a month in January 2016 and played six times before his spell was up. The plan was for him to stay longer but breaking his toe during training put an end to that plan. The month was a good experience for the then 19-year-old, however. It was his first taste of men’s football in England and the physicality was something he hadn’t experienced before, coming up against Adebayo Akinfenwa on his EFL debut can be best described as a 'baptism of fire'.

After another spell on the treatment table, Page was again with the under 21s and featured in the side’s Under-21 Premier League Cup victory. West Ham would beat Liverpool in the semi-finals to then face Hull City over two legs. A penalty shootout was needed to decide the winners and it was the Irons who came out on top. That brought an end to the 2015/16 season and the following campaign, Page was back with the first team and part of their pre-season tour in America and then Austria. It was another new experience for the defender who was ready to start playing football week in, week out. “My plan was to go on loan to a League One club,” he explains. “While in America we played some good teams and in Seattle, we were playing in front of 55,000 fans. That year was also the opening ceremony of the Olympic Stadium and I came on for 10 minutes against Juventus which was a great experience.” The day after featuring against ‘The Old Lady’, Page was on his way to Coventry for a six-month loan. He would feature more than 20 times before January came around and although doing “OK” himself, he was part of a Coventry side which were struggling on and off the pitch. He returned to West Ham for just a couple of days before receiving news that League One side Charlton Athletic wanted to sign the defender permanently. Once the manager and owners had given the green light Page saw the move as a “no brainer”. “I had sat on the bench for a long time while at West Ham and they had just brought in Arthur Masuaku for a big fee so I knew I wasn't going to get a chance,” Page explains. “A Premier League side has money and every position on the pitch had players they’d brought in for silly money so I never thought they’d change anything for me. I don’t think anyone was playing from the academy at that moment so it made my mind up for me.”
16
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Page arrived at The Valley and was thrown straight into the team, featuring eight times before a horrible hamstring injury ended his season. While shepherding a ball out of a play, he got a slight nudge from an opponent and then when trying to slow down, it felt like his leg had “blown up”. The left-back couldn’t walk and a scan soon revealed the hamstring had completely ruptured. It meant an expected three to four months on the sidelines but it turned out to be half a year when a small slip during rehab meant he needed to go under the knife again. It was a nightmare situation for the young defender who was desperate to get back playing. The saving grace for Page was that he still had two years remaining on his contract, meaning there was time for him to work his way back into the team. Lee Bowyer was now in charge of The Addicks and the former Leeds United and West Ham player chose to include Page as soon as he was deemed fit. The 25-year-old featured towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign and started the following season with minutes and momentum under his belt. However, Page’s injury hell would not yet be over as the defender was battling with an niggling hip injury which came to a head against Scunthorpe United in October 2018. The former West Ham man wouldn’t play another competitive game until 2020. “It just wasn’t healing,” the defender stresses, “and with that area, it’s heavily involved when playing football so I had to slowly build myself up. It was really tough as I had been playing well and the coaches were wanting me to play but I couldn't even sit up. It was one of the most frustrating times," He continues. "I had played with it for three months and everyone knew I had it. I wouldn’t train Fridays but I’d take tablets on matchday to get through the pain but it just got gradually worse and popped."

"I thought about stopping football completely but I got back playing in March for the under 23s. The lads had got promoted so we were now in the Championship and I thought it was the chance to start again. Then in the last pre-season game, I injured my hamstring again so that killed me. Trying to get back to fitness, I just didn’t feel right. My legs constantly felt tight and then I’d just get injured. I thought about packing it in, not that I knew what I'd have done otherwise. I just didn’t want to feel the stress and agro from it all.” The defender wouldn’t play a competitive game throughout the 2019/20 season and when that ended prematurely due to Covid, Page knew his time at Charlton had come to an end. They didn’t offer him a new deal and so the left-back was on the lookout for a fresh start. He went on a trial with Plymouth Argyle and impressed the coaching staff at Home Park. Page was offered a monthly rolling contract due to his injury history but when Exeter then came to the table with a year deal, the defender swiftly moved to the South West of the country. Page went on to have a much better season, playing 35 times for the Grecians. It was the consistency he wanted and needed if he was to restart his career. He was offered a new deal at the end of the 2020/21 season but Page sought to look at alternative options, one being Sunderland where the defender was set to trial for a week. However, three days into that, he felt tightness in his hamstring. Timing had crippled his chances of a move back to League One.
18
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Sunderland’s loss would prove to be Harrogate Town’s gain as Simon Weaver soon declared his interest in the 25-year-old. After a chat with the manager, Page saw the move as a great opportunity and on July 16 2021, he became a Town player. So far, it has been a stop-start debut season for Page. Since making his league debut for the North Yorkshire side on the opening day of the season, he's been in and out of the starting XI due to an innocuous cut to the cheek and a minor hamstring tweak. Nonetheless, the defender has found himself a key figure down the left and proved to be instrumental in away victories against Leyton Orient and Mansfield Town. Page feels he’s now in a place where he knows what his body can and can’t take, and it’s now a case of working that perfect balance to help himself and the team kick on this season. “We’ve discussed why the injury has happened but I feel like I’m getting there now. We’re in the process of working out what works best for me and over the years, I’ve decided what works best for my body. I’ve really enjoyed it here so far and moved up to Leeds, it's great up here. It’s been a positive start for the team and on a personal note, I want to reach that 35 game mark." "I’d like to get a few more assists and a couple of goals which will hopefully help the team finish as high as possible. If we get to the playoffs or better then that’s great. All we’ve got to do is keep aiming as high as possible.”

Signed from Hull City in January 2017, he completed that season on loan at North Ferriby United. A product of the Hull City academy, he previously spent a month on loan with Scunthorpe in 2015. In his first full season at Scunthorpe he made 10 total appearances before becoming the main goalkeeper the following season, in the absence of the injured Matt Gilks, but only played six games before injury curtailed his season as well. The 2019-20 season saw him return from that injury, and he made 26 appearances in total, before a further 15 appearances last campaign.
Signing in July from Morecambe, the 30-year-old started his career at Crewe Alexandra and after coming through the club’s academy made his first team debut in 2010. In eight seasons at Gresty Road, he made 184 appearances before spending the latter half of 2016-17 on loan at St Mirren who he joined permanently in August 2017. After helping the Buddies win the Scottish Championship, he signed for Grimsby Town in June 2018 and made 56 appearances before joining Morecambe last Summer, playing 34 times as The Shrimps went up to League One via the play-offs.
Signed from Tadcaster Albion in January 2020, the 23-year-old started his career at Tad before joining Doncaster Rovers in August 2016 where he made 50 appearances, mostly in League One in three seasons at the Keepmoat, scoring three goals. He also had a loan spell at Chesterfield in 2018 before being released by Rovers in Summer 2019 and re-joining Tadcaster Albion. After joining Scunthorpe, he appeared 42 times and scored five times for The Iron last season and has been more or less ever-present this season and an important part of the United line-up.
LAST MEETING
SCUNTHORPE UNITED 3-1 HARROGATE TOWN
20th February 2021 / Sands Venue Stadium / League Two Striker Ryan Loft made one goal and scored another as Scunthorpe secured a fourth successive win with a 3-1 success over Town. In a scrappy second half, Iron substitute Lewis Spence produced the one moment of quality, finding the top corner from 25 yards in the 90th minute. Scunthorpe United: Howard, Clarke, Taft, Onariase (Bedeau 77), Gilliead, Loft (Hallam 84), Eisa ■, Brown, Green (Van Veen 59), Beestin, Karacan (Spence 77) Harrogate Town: Belshaw, Burrell, Francis, Smith, Hall, Power (Muldoon 88), Falkingham, Thomson, McPake, March, Martin (Beck 70)

HARROGATE TOWN 1-0 ROTHERHAM UNITED report by Ross McKay
Last Saturday, the Town Academy lads put in an impressive display to inflict only the second defeat of this season on Rotherham United in the EFL Youth Alliance North East League. A solitary goal from Emmanuel Ilesanmi in the 70th-minute proved to be the difference in North Yorkshire. Town also had a penalty well saved by the Millers goalkeeper with the scores 0-0.
played the better football with some great attacking football creating numerous chances. Next up, we travel to Salford City in the Cup which will be another stern test for the lads but one that we are really looking forward to. Town: Giles, Tweed, Birmingham Liddle, Attree, Wilson, Williams, Horbury, Ilesanmi, O'Boyle, Dean Subs: Lamb, J. Barker, W. Barker, Dixon, Sweete
After an outstanding week on the training pitch, we have continued to work on our structure both on and off the ball. After being let down in previous fixtures by small pockets of inconsistency, this was the main focus during training. Against the high-flying, freescoring Millers, the team put in a mature and consistent performance for the full game. Not only did Town maintain their structure and discipline to restrict Rotherham to very few goal scoring opportunities, they also

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2021
Sunday 10th October is...
With World Mental Health Day on Sunday 10th October, our club Chaplain Rob Brett has been speaking to Mike Gibbs, Chair of the mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District (MiHD) about what services the charity offers and how we can all support each other. Mike, please can you tell us more about MiHD? MiHD is based at 101A Station Parade in central Harrogate and provides mental health services in the local community. We are an independent charity but part of the national Mind Federation providing mental health support services right across Harrogate District. For contact details go to www.mindinharrogate.org.uk What services can MiHD offer? We offer a mental health telephone service, a befriending service, counselling services, activities such as Arts & Crafts and music group sessions such as men’s group, a women’s group, a walking group, al allotment group plus coffee and conversation sessions, mindfulness sessions and some self-help groups such as anxiety management. How did you get involved with HTAFC? The EFL and Mind joined forces ahead of the 2018/19 season to use the power of football to help improve the nation’s mental health and wellbeing. On the back of this, last season HTAFC hosted a number of Team Talk zoom calls where players and fans could share their stories and experiences and talk about what impacts mental health and what we can do to support each other. What has been the impact on your services over the last 18 months? At MiHD, we have seen many more people requiring our services and support over the last 18 months.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Our mental health can decline when we are prevented from doing something we enjoy – such as watching HTAFC and seeing our friends at the stadium every other week. When we lose that connectivity or community or even regular activity in our lives, we can become isolated and lonely which are also triggers for poor mental health.

What can we do at HTAFC to support each other? Try and recognise if your friend, colleague or fellow supporter is going through difficulties. Ask them how they are and maybe share some difficulties of your own. The key thing is to talk and to be there for them. Be a friend, be kind, be their support. We are all part of the same team at HTAFC so lets support each other as we support the team.

BIRTHDAY ZAK
We are delighted to welcome Town fan, Zak and five of his friends to the game today as a special 15th Birthday treat! Zak has a chromosome deletion and his learning difficulties make it harder for him to be part of a mainstream football team, however, in 2018 he was introduced to Adversity United that is run by Cameron Osburn which was set up to give boys and girls aged 5-12 living with physical, behavioural, social and cerebral challenges the chance to play football. Back in 2018, Adversity were mascots for Town and Zak accompanied James Belshaw on to the pitch which he loved. This season, Zak and his family bought Season Tickets for the first time and are really proud to support Town whilst Zak also attended the Town Soccer Camps in May and August which he loved. Zak's family, friends and everyone at Town would like to wish him a very Happy Birthday and hope he has a really enjoyable day today!

LADIES CONTINUE WINNING STREAK Town Ladies First XI 2021-22 5 Sep 26 Sep 3 Oct 10 Oct 17 Oct 24 Oct 31 Oct 7 Nov 14 Nov 21 Nov 28 Nov 5 Dec
TOWN LADIES 4-1 RIPON CITY LADIES Five weeks into the season and Town's winning streak continues. Two league games against Farsley Celtic and Hartlepool saw us pick up 3-2 and 1-0 wins respectively, alongside a victory over South Shields in a friendly. Last weekend we featured in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup against Ripon City Ladies. Being a part of the FA Cup is always special but to walk out in front of around Town 200 supporters with our mascots from the PDC wearing their #ProudToBeTown tops couldn’t have been more fitting. There were five changes to the previous weeks starting line up against Hartlepool yet it didn’t take long for us to create chances and dominate the game. 22 minutes in, Nat Eustance’s quick feet earned a free kick on the left which Becky Wilson
report by Carey Huegett
swung into the box and Georgia Southby rose highest to send a bullet header into the far corner to put us 1-0 up. Shortly after, Beth Jennings was put through on goal by Emma Elliot where she lobbed the oncoming Ripon goalkeeper to make it 2-0. At half time we were disappointed that it was only 2-0. We hadn’t been clinical enough in the first half and still looked that we had several gears to go through to reach our best. On the hour mark, Cass Lane was dragged down in the penalty box as she was through on goal. Emma Elliot stepped up to convert the penalty to make it 3-0. Ripon pulled a goal back through a Chloe Bethell free kick but Emma Elliot instantly replied to secure a comfortable 4-1 win after a great team goal.

Emma Elliot
Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I started playing for a team when I went to High School and my PE teacher sent me for trials. I signed for North Yorkshire Centre of Excellence when I was 12ish. I played for Leeds Metropolitan University first team and signed for Bradford City at the end of my final year. I moved to London and trialled for Charlton who asked me to sign for the reserves. I turned it down to continue playing for my Sunday League team as I was enjoying scoring lots of goals and needed the right balance. I was a newly qualified teacher and it was too much alongside my first full time teaching job. When I moved back home this year, I knew I wanted to challenge myself and see what I was still capable of at a higher level, so here I am.
What attracted you to Town? Kez got in touch before preseason as we played together at Bradford and around the Leeds/ Bradford/Harrogate circuit. Kez explained what she wanted to achieve, where the team was going and how the club was fully behind the women’s team. Being Harrogate born and bred, I liked the idea of being part of playing for my hometown club and being part

of the push for success. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I would say I am a classic poacher and clinical finisher. I have quick feet and read the game well to get in good positions. What are the goals you would like to achieve at Town? To get promoted and score goals. I want to establish myself as the clubs No. 9 and be so reliable and clinical that there is no doubt in my ability or desire to strengthen the position. I always want to be the club's top scorer and high in the league ranks. What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Manchester United. It’s hard to pin down who my favourite player is. Bruno is top quality and has revived us, and the return of Ronaldo is an absolute dream. Mason Greenwood is so talented and has so many years to develop. I think Marcus Rashford takes it though because he’s a great person as well as a quality baller. What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? I’m 28 soon, so at this stage, I would like to cement my place in the Town squad and stay with the club, seeing how far up the leagues we can go. As long as I’m challenged, scoring goals and contributing, I’m happy. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? The girls are quality. It’s hard to find a club that plays at a good level and is competitive, but also has decent people who are supportive of each other and fun to be around and that's exactly what we have here.

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I 45
Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
