Everyone at the Club was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of legendary supporter, Eugene Downey in early September. A huge Town fan, Eugene (left) regualrly attended both home and away matches with his good friend Mickey Bell (right). Our thoughts are with Eugene’s family and friends at this sad time.

I would like to welcome you back to The EnviroVent Stadium for this afternoon’s Yorkshire derby. I would also like to welcome the Bradford City manager, Mark Hughes and his side for our first meeting of the season.

It’s been a few weeks since we last played at home which provides an opportunity to take a look back at our results and performances since the Salford match.

Last week against Stevenage was a tough one to take as we lost in the dying minutes but we have to take the opportunity to learn from each experience. In the first half we were competitive and had the opportunity to go ahead with Josh Coley’s chance after pressing well in their defensive third. There is no denying, however, that in the second half, they were the better team and a powerful outfit.

The previous game saw us pick up a point at Stockport County, but I think we were unlucky not to take all three. We were slow out the traps in the first half, but reacted well in the second, and it gave us some positive signs of what the lads are capable of, especially those who came on from the bench.

Despite the defeat last weekend, it’s important that we recognise that there were some good performances in the match. Rory McArdle came in for his first start of the season and slotted right in to the back four seamlessly. It was a physical game with a lot of ariel duels and Rory more than held his own. We are looking tighter at the back with the likes of Rory and Joe Mattock available to

us and will lean on their experience and qualities throughout the season.

It’s no secret that we are still working to find that winning formula, and that can be an arduous process, but there has been progress on the defensive side of our game and now we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to improve our attacking output because there are players at this football club with real quality.

Today’s match promises to be a tough test. They are a good side with quality all over the pitch and have started the season well. We can’t ever suggest that this local derby is historically a big one for some who are viewing today’s game, but for all involved at Harrogate Town, we are a proud bunch who enjoy the local games and in recent times the team has produced some unforgettable moments. We must play with pride and earn the right to play to our full potential today. All games are tough at this level, but it’s now time for us to show the town we are ready and capable of winning games.

We have done a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure we are ready for this battle from the first whistle and we have noticed a real determination from the lads to get back to winning ways.

Your vocal support is vital and gives us a huge lift.

Good Afternoon everyone. I’d like to warmly welcome you to The EnviroVent Stadium for today’s game against Bradford City.

There has been an added edge going in to this one because it has that derby feel to it Personally, I love occasions like this and I have been fortunate enough to be a part of some memorable derby moments with this club and that is something which we want to continue here today.

We know how much these games mean to our supporters and I know that we, as a squad, are really looking forward to playing in front of you and in an electric atmosphere. We will be the underdogs, but we will be looking to feed off that and get on top early. We want to give you something to cheer about, and from the first minute, that will be the aim.

I am pleased to be back involved and available for selection after what was a tough spell out with my injury. That time out has helped me appreciate stepping out on to the field with the lads. Whether that be in training or in a match you get a buzz every single day coming in to training. Having spent so long out I think it has only added to my motivation to keep pushing and to put in the hard yards to make sure I am ready for when that chance does come.

Of course, reflecting on last week’s defeat against Stevenage I think there are areas where we need to improve as a team. We all know how important it is to score goals but we have to keep working hard and believing that our luck will turn.

Changing that luck isn’t just about turning up on a Saturday, it’s about the work we put in day in and day out in training. We want to build that positive mindset and take it in to games because from there we will change our fortunes because we do have really good forward players. The expectation for that doesn’t just fall on them its on us collectively as a unit to take responsibility to share that as a team.

However, I do believe there have been positive signs from our recent performances. Defensively we have been a lot stronger compared to last year and that solidity gives us a strong base to build on. Enjoy the match!

Football league memories for Harrogate Town don’t come much bigger than Lloyd Kerry’s winner against Bradford City in 2020. The crisp finish secured all three points in the Yorkshire derby and will live long in the memory of all Town fans.

However, the club legend brought an end to his impressive career at the end of last season and is now focused on making an impact in the club’s recruitment department. Looking ahead to the occasion the former midfield general has admitted he will miss the buzz of being involved in such an exciting match.

He explained: “It’s a massive occasion whenever we go up against them and I have managed to score the winning goal against them in front of my family so that was a really good moment for me. I think the lads can take confidence from the fact we have a good record against Bradford.

“We are at home as well and I’m sure the lads will put on a good performance for the fans, giving our all and more in the derby. As a player you get a real buzz from playing in front of a crowd and I miss that now I have retired but I’ll be cheering the lads on from the side lines.”

However, reflecting on his decision to bring his magnificent playing career to an end, Kerry believes his decision was the right one. After accepting an offer to become the club’s Head of Player Recruitment he oversaw the signings of 15 new players.

He revealed: “It’s been a big change for me, I’m still finding my feet in the role but I am really enjoying it. I really enjoyed playing for this club and now I am focused on helping it in whatever way I can. It has been a crazy six months really since I was first offered the job in January.

“My contract was up last summer and I spoke with the gaffer around Christmas of last year to find out what lay ahead for me from the club’s point of view for clarity. He came back to me a couple of weeks later and offered me the role and thought it would be a good fit for me.”

Having spent 16 years playing professional football the now former Town midfielder admitted the offer was not expected as he considered retirement and the offer on the table.

He said: “At first it took me by surprise a little bit but when I got my head round the prospect of retiring and not playing any more, the opportunity was too good to turn down. Once I accepted the role I started straight away. I was out watching

games whenever I could, if I wasn’t in the squad I was away watching a match and we came up with a plan. We identified positions and areas which we would like to improve and I was a part of that process. I was still available to play if needed and had to remain professional in case I was needed. I have had a good six or seven months at it now.”

Having freshly retired just weeks previously Kerry relied heavily on his insight gained from playing and knowledge of the squad and he worked to identify characters who would suit the yellow and black.

He said: “I think I have a good understanding of what the manager and coaches expect from players. We have built our success on having good characters, lads who will run through a brick wall for this club and I definitely think it helps. We have a great relationship and as a group I think we are really close, we all want the same thing and are on the same page which I think is important.”

However, after accepting a role within the club’s

recruitment department, the hard word continues for the former Town midfielder as he continues his football obsession after hanging up his boots.

He said: “I am currently studying my talent ID level 3 qualification which I think will help me to continue improving within this role. I have done a bit of coaching and I do enjoy that as well, I am also doing my UEFA B License just in case I want to go down that route in future. Anything within football interests me. I have loved being a part of it as a player and in my current role and if I can broaden my knowledge within any aspect of the game I will always look to do that.”

In becoming the club’s first full-time Head of Player Recruitment, this step is aimed at facilitating the club’s continued evolution in the EFL.

He explained: “In the past we have had part-time scouts, Lee Barraclough is still with us as Chief Scout and has done a great job in his time here. The club wanted someone full-time, there are games almost every day of the week at a variety

of different levels but we want to have a chance at seeing more players live and helping to us evolve.

“We are often up against teams in our division when we are looking at players. With that in mind we want to be able to think outside the box at times and get creative because when you’re in that competition you aren’t going to get every player you want.”

Having switched the boots for the side lines it’s his time as a member of staff which has allowed the man who made 224 appearances for the club to fully appreciate the hard work which goes on behind the scenes at a football club.

He said: “I am really proud of what I have achieved at the club and to be a part of promotions, Wembley appearances and winning trophies and now for me it’s about helping the club as much as I can off the field. That is the same as the rest of the staff here, I know how much hard work they all put in behind the scenes which probably goes unnoticed when you’re a player.

“Everyone just wants this club to be successful and we’re working as hard as we can to make that happen. For me, if I can play a part in helping the club continue to move forward I would be very proud of that as well.”

With a change to Town’s tactical set up coming in the final week of the transfer window, the club recruited four new signings on transfer deadline day. However, while some may avoid the chaotic nature of a day like this, it was one which Kerry enjoyed being a part of.

He revealed: “We didn’t have a lot of options in wider areas and we knew that would impact us if we wanted to change the formation. So we had a look at our targets, the manager had an operation that day so it was myself and Paul Thirlwell were on the phone a lot.

“Abbey, our secretary, and Rachel our physio were ready at the ground for medicals. Josh Coley was probably the latest one. We were interested in Josh but we had to wait on Exeter bringing in another player in before we could get that deal done.

“I think it was about quarter-to 11 before we got the deal done. It was a stressful at times but it was a great experience for me. We were delighted with the four lads we brought in and the options they give us.”

Having held several discussions with potential recruits and agents in recent months, the former midfield general admitted his understanding of football players and experiences picked up as a player helped him in getting deals over the line.

He said: “I was always trying to sell the club in the best way I can, I have been a part of it and in the changing room so I know first hand the strengths of this football club. I definitely think it helps to a certain degree but there are other factors which influences a player’s decision which we can’t control.

“I think the success we’ve had in recent years helps us. A lot of people take notice and believe we are doing something right. The manager isn’t scared to give opportunities to players who earn it and I think that makes us quite an appealing option.

“Looking at loans in recent years, we have also had a few successful ones which helps us in discussions with parent clubs because they know we will give their players the experience they need.”

In leading the player recruitment for both the club’s first team and youth academy the former Town midfielder believes the tools at his disposal will be a huge benefit as the club continues to improve.

He said: “We have of course got access to Wyscout which is a fantastic software which allows us to watch videos of players playing in matches. I watch a lot of videos every week but you still need to watch players live.

“I am a big believer in that because you see things the camera doesn’t pick up. For example, last year one player looked really good but when I went to watch him his body language and attitude weren’t great. We’ve got Statsbomb as well which helps us when looking at players as well.”

In leading the recruitment process for the club’s academy squad, the 34-year-old believes the approach must differ to that of the first team.

He explained: “Within the youth team it’s about identifying the characteristics we want. It’s different because you have to see the bigger picture with these lads because they are still developing. We’re going to be doing a lot to build up links with category one club’s.

“Obviously as you go up they pyramid there is more and more quality and we want to be in a position to pick up players with talent who might not make the grade at a category one club. Right now we have our player development centre but in the longer term we are looking at category three and reaching that level.”

THE MEN IN CHARGE

STAN HALL 1969-70

Managerial Record: Games 24 / Won 8 / Drew 7 / Lost 9

30-year-old centre half Stan Hall joined Harrogate Town from Yorkshire League Selby Town and made his first team debut on 6 February 1965 in a 1-1 draw at home to Bridlington Town in Yorkshire League Division One. He played two seasons with Town making 25 appearances before retiring from active soccer and hanging up his boots in January 1966.

He had enjoyed 15 years of Yorkshire league football with Farsley Celtic and Selby as captain. After retiring, he continued at Town helping manager Jack Townrow in the gym with training. I remember it well, aged 17 in 1966/67, him training us in the gym at a school in Knaresborough especially with the ‘medicine’ ball. That strengthened you up.

After Townrow’s death in April 1969, Hall was approached by Town officials to take over as manager/coach. A youth leader, Hall described the facilities for young people in the Town ‘deplorable’. They could train on the Stray on light evenings but he wanted them to possess a gym of their own

for winter months for training. Hall even went to watch Don Revie’s Leeds players training to see their advanced coaching techniques.

For 1969/70, Hall was the first manager to actually select the team over a committee and the local paper wrote, ‘Players will now know where leadership is coming from. This was a big change for the committee to leave selection to the men on the touchline. Hall’s tenure at the helm, however, didn’t last long, as he resigned in February 1970 with Stan’s assistant ‘Chick Farr’ taking over until the end of the season. Hall’s short stay brought eight league and cup victories, seven draws and nine defeats from 24 games.

NCS CHANGEMAKERS ESCAPE!

After our fun-filled summer on NCS, we had some of the young people return and join us as NCS Changemakers.

The group took part in an escape room, with the aim of breaking out within the time limit. The group were split into two as they competed to see who could escape the quickest.

It was great for the staff to see some familiar faces from summer and the young people working together as a team.

As we move into October and the winter months the young people will start to prepare and plan for their Christmas social action project. This will be an exciting prospect for the young people to have an opportunity, to positively impact their local community during the festive period.

WALKING FOOTBALL

Our over 60’s Walking Footballers finished there Northern Premier League season off last weekend with the final round of fixtures at Goal’s Leeds.

In a very tight opening game, they took an early lead when Dean Tunbridge scored on his debut, unfortunately Harrogate couldn’t hang on and Blackfyne grabbed a last-minute equaliser, the final game was against the newly crowned League Champions Benfield and Harrogate saved the best for last. Despite being on the backfoot for most of the game, Harrogate were well and organised and took the lead early in the second half through Tom Robinson and despite a final onslaught from the Champions Harrogate held on to finish the season third in the league. A massive well done to players and volunteers for a fantastic season!

ALL SMILES FOR THREE SPECIAL TOWN RUNNERS

On Sunday 11th September, three of our Town Runners - Kate, Charlotte and Sarah, who were beginners in January, ran together and completed the Great North Run for there respective charities.From beginner to a 13.1 mile half marathon is an amazing achievement!

Sarah (pictured right above) has also qualified recently through England Athletics and becomes our fourth

qualified run leader. This is such an incredible achievement by all, well done!

The former Manchester City, Southampton, Stoke City, Fulham, QPR, Blackburn Rovers and Wales boss arrived at the Utilita Energy Stadium in February, having taken charge of over 450 top-flight matches. With over 150 Premier League victories and eight top-10 finishes, Hughes has the seventh-highest total of Premier League fixtures managed in history.

As a player, Hughes began his pro career with Manchester United in 1980, scoring 163 goals in 473 appearances across two spells and winning the Premier League (twice), FA Cup (three times), League Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup. Having also served spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the English Football Hall of Fame inductee and two-time PFA Players’ Player of the Year then spent three seasons with Chelsea, scoring 39 goals in 123 games and adding another FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup trophy to his cabinet.

Bradford City kicked off their summer recruitment drive with the permanent signing of highly-rated Southampton goalkeeper Harry Lewis. Prior to working under manager Mark Hughes on the south coast, the 6ft 4ins stopper made three Emirates FA Cup appearances for the Saints in 2017, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 thirdround replay victory over Norwich City. The 24-year-old then made 39 appearances on loan at Dundee United the following season, with 11 clean sheets helping the Tangerines to a third-placed Scottish Championship finish. The Shrewsbury-born keeper appeared on the Saints bench on four occasions in the top flight last season and has been ever-present between the sticks for the Bantams this term.

Richie signed for the club in July 2022 following the expiry of his contract at Hull City. The experienced midfielder jmade 42 Sky Bet Championship appearances for the Tigers last season, after proving instrumental throughout the Humberside outfit’s Sky Bet League One title-winning 2020/21 campaign. Born in Redcar, the 31-year-old began his career at Middlesbrough, having graduated from the academy at the Riverside Stadium. He went on to make over 100 appearances in the second tier for Rotherham United between 2014 and 2017, before turning out 87 times for Blackburn Rovers prior to moving to the MKM Stadium. On his arrival at Bradford, the 31-year-old, was immediately handed the captain’s armband for by Bantams manager Mark Hughes.

After spending the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with the Bantams, Cook signed permanently from Mansfield Town in June 2021. The 31-year-old finished as City’s top goal-scorer last season, scoring 12 goals in 39 appearances and has already bagged eight goals so far this term. The 31-year-old’s pro career started at Carlisle United in 2009, where he had loan spells with Workington and Barrow before making the move to Holker Street permanent in early 2010. He joined Grimsby Town in June 2012 before returning to Barrow in June 2014 scoring 47 in 87 league games. He then had two years at Tranmere Rovers scoring 49 in 85 games, before moving to League One Walsall in May 2018. After 13 league goals in 43 games for the Saddlers, he moved to Mansfield in June 2019 and despite seven goals in his first 10 games was loaned out to Tranmere in early 2020.

Ex-England international defender

Trevor Cherry guided Bradford City to the Third Division title in 1984-85. Signing pro for Huddersfield Town in July 1965, he captained them to the Second Division title in 1969-70 and moved to Leeds United in June 1972. He was an FA Cup and ECWC finalist in 1973, then starred as they were League Champions in 1973-74, becoming Bradford City’s playermanager in December 1982. Making 92 League appearances for the Bantams, he remained in charge at Valley Parade until January 1987. He died in April 2020.

TERRY DOLAN

Terry Dolan managed Bradford City to the Second Division play-offs in 1987-88. Initially with Bradford PA, the midfielder moved to Huddersfield Town in October 1970 and appeared in the top-flight. He joined Bradford City in August 1976 and starred in their 1976-77 promotion success, netting 43 goals in 195 League outings before moving to Rochdale in August 1981. Joining Bradford City’s coaching staff in January 1985, he was their manager between January 1987 and January 1989. He returned to Rochdale as boss in March 1989 and plotted their record 1989-90 FA Cup run, then managed Hull City and York City.

CHRIS KAMARA

Chris Kamara plotted Bradford City’s 1995-96 Second Division play-off final triumph. The much-travelled midfielder played for Portsmouth, Swindon Town, Portsmouth again and Brentford prior to rejoining Swindon in August 1985. Featuring in two consecutive promotion campaigns, he then had spells with Stoke City, Leeds United, Luton Town and Sheffield United before moving to Bradford City in July 1994. He assisted Lennie Lawrence, succeeding him as manager in November 1995 and remaining in charge at Valley Parade until January 1998. Briefly managing Stoke City, he has since been a pundit on Sky TV.

PAUL JEWELL

Striker Paul Jewell was both a player and manager at Bradford City. Initially with Liverpool, he joined Wigan Athletic in December 1984, starring as they reached the FA Cup sixth round and Third Division play-offs in 1986-87. He moved to Bradford City in July 1988 and netted 56 goals in 269 League games, then assisted Chris Kamara before succeeding him as boss in May 1998. Guiding Bradford City to the Premier League in 199899, he took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in June 2000, then rejoined Wigan. Managing them to the Premier League and 2006 League Cup final, he later managed Derby and Ipswich.

STUART McCALL

Ex-Scotland international midfielder Stuart McCall has had three spells as Bradford City’s boss. He was ever-present in the Bantams’ 1984-85 Third Division title triumph. Moving to Everton in June 1988, he joined Rangers in August 1991 and amassed many honours before rejoining Bradford City in June 1998. He captained them to the Premier League in 1998-99 and scored 45 goals in 395 League games overall prior to joining Sheffield United in July 2002. Rejoining Bradford City as manager in May 2007, he has since managed Motherwell, Rangers, Bradford (twice more) and Scunthorpe.

PHIL PARKINSON

Phil Parkinson managed Bradford City to promotion and the League Cup final in 2012-13. Initially with Southampton, the midfielder moved from Bury to Reading in July 1992. He starred as they won the Second Division title in 1993-94, then were First Division play-off finalists in 1995. Also helping win promotion in 200102, he became Colchester’s manager in February 2003 and plotted their 2005-06 promotion success and FA Cup run. He managed Hull City and Charlton Athletic, then Bradford City from August 2011 until June 2016. Guiding Bolton to promotion in 201617, he has since managed Sunderland and Wrexham.

On Saturday Town U18s Academy made the trip to Mansfield for their third league game of the season and came away with a well-deserved first win of the season.

some really good stuff and looked a threat when counter attacking. Again, Mansfield did not hurt the away side and Giles had a relatively quiet half.

Harrogate scored their second of the morning with fifteen minutes to spare when Emmanuel Ilesanmi was brought down in the box and then got up to calmly slot the ball home from the spot.

This was a fantastic team performance and should give the lads real confidence going forward this season.

Town started the brighter and were rewarded in the second minute when Brad Williams broke through the young Stags defence beating two players before slipping a through ball to Finn O’Boyle who neatly slotted past the Mansfield keeper.

The Town defence managed to limit the hosts to very few opportunities and other than a free kick which was smartly saved by Harvey Giles in the Town goal, Mansfield did not have another shot on goal in the first half.

Against a strong Wakefield side, last Sunday was a difficult day at the office for Town Women.

Following a good week of training we went into Sunday full of confidence and the game did present moments of brilliance, but we struggled with consistency across the 90 minutes.

Setbacks and bad days happen, but these moments will always provide you more opportunities to learn, improve and move forward. Our reaction in these moments is now important. It’s vital that we recognise how we can learn, adapt and progress as we enter a new week of training.

With defeats it’s easy to focus on what went wrong and how we fix it, but the game did provide some moments of individual and collective brilliance. As we continue to develop our identity, it’s essential that we use those moments as the basis of all our hard work.

Abbey Smith was excellent throughout and deservedly picked up the Player of the Match after a resilient display, never wavering until the final whistle.

Town Women travel to Brighouse tomorrow in the Second Qualifying Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup keen to make amends for last Saturday.

Town are back in cup action on Tuesday night with an exciting, home Papa John’s Trophy group game against Everton U21s.

The young Toffees have made a great start to their Premier League 2 Division One campaign, and at the time of going to print sit fourth in the table after six games - the top tier of development football.

Managed by Paul Tait, they have suffered only one loss this season to Chelsea, but bounced back with a fine 5-0 win over Sporting Braga in the Premier League International Cup and followed that up with a 1-0 league win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Like Town, this is only their second game in the Papa John’s Trophy after they came away with a 3-3 draw at Morecambe in the opening round of games, only to lose out 7-6 on penalties for the extra bonus point. The Toffees scorers that night were Sean McAllister, Isaac Price and Thomas Cannon.
