THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER
It’s time to reflect on our most recent results and first up is the 6-1 win against Scunthorpe United, an afternoon where we couldn’t have wished for more. It was a terrific first half which I’m sure we’ll be looking back at in years to come thinking that’s a moment we reached a new level. There was pace, attitude and passing with a ruthless edge that all added to a great performance. The next step is to replicate the attitude, honesty and legwork required. It was an afternoon where we nailed the nitty gritty side of the game and that was very pleasing. What added to the occasion was seeing all the different generations in the terraces cheering the players on and a lot of new faces. We’ve gone from a couple hundred fans at home games where I recognised every face in the crowd to more than a couple thousand and it’s so great to see. It’s exciting to see the Harrogate public really embracing the team and the lads truly deserve that and bounce of that support. The message going into the fixture against Colchester, was to not be complacent. How often do you see a team put in a really good performance and then get beaten the very next game? We really wanted to avoid that so to come away with nothing was very disappointing. For the first 15 minutes especially, we were after a fast tempo but we were taking ages over throw ins, free kicks and set pieces. It was a bit boring from the sidelines so I'm sure our fans thought so as well. Those games where that edge is lacking, you can easily end up losing games and that’s exactly what happened to us. I've said before that we’ll lose games, every team will, but when we do, it’s about losing on the terms of how you want to play. At times we showed a bit of something but it was too sporadic

and we didn't control the game and deserved to come away with nothing. A positive however, was Will Smith’s performance. He had the passion that personifies how we wanted to go about it; doing the nitty gritty stuff first - winning first and second balls and earning the right to play. The defeat is a reminder to everyone that we can’t get carried away. The selfies with the fans after the Scunthorpe game were brilliant, we're wanting to grow the crowd and get the young supporters in and for them to enjoy the experience. We want there to be a spark around the town so to come back from a five hour trip with nothing, does frustrate. Nonetheless, we must go again this evening when we host Tranmere. It is an opportunity to put in a strong performance, but make no mistake about it, it will be a difficult game. They've got some real quality in their team and have already shown their intention to be right at the top end of the league table. They’re in great form and will bring a fantastic following with them, which alongside our supporters should make for another great atmosphere under the lights. We know we have to react and step it up from Saturday and I'm sure we’ll all be up for that.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM I’d like to start tonight's programme notes with a brief reflection on our last home game, the 6-1 win against Scunthorpe United in front of a record home league attendance. I have to say that the atmosphere created in the ground was incredible and gave us all that extra boost of adrenaline when we kicked off. It was a first half blitz from us and an example of what our best football can be like. It was pretty much a faultless 45 minutes and we deserved to be 5-0 up come the break. Then at full time whistle, it was great to see so many fans staying to celebrate the result. The photos with the lads, the shirt signings and the happy faces, it’s what it’s all about. If we can continue to keep growing the crowd, it’ll help us massively throughout this season. We can feel a real buzz around the Town at the moment and we really want that to continue.

Going away with a point is always a positive when we haven’t reached are usual levels and on Saturday against Colchester was a chance to get
After such a good performance and result, we headed to Colchester in good spirits, wanting to keep that momentum going. However, a 1-0 defeat following a late goal was a sucker punch and really highlights the highs and lows that comes with football.
a point but we let that go.
Obviously we were no where near good enough that afternoon. We never really got going and we fully-deserved to come away empty handed. The start to the season has been great but we were really disappointed to come away with nothing because we didn’t give a full account of ourselves. We didn’t put the ball in good enough areas and pass it well enough to put a stamp on the game. Apart from Will Smith, we just didn’t win our battles and that creates an uphill task. We’ve got to be big enough and strong enough to take defeat and move on, it’s the nature of the beast.
match. We’re hoping for another great
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
We’ve got a chance this Tuesday to put things right against Tranmere. We’ve got to make sure we’re right mentally and that the application is right. Tranmere are a really dangerous side and there’s no doubt, it’ll be a really competitive atmosphere at the EnviroVent and that could prove to be the difference come the full time whistle. I know for a fact this group of players will respond. We’re a group of lads who stay grounded, the manager wouldn’t allow anything else, so we’re fully focused on the next game, that’s how it has to be.

PLAYER IN FOCUS
DANILO ORSI
And I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it, ohhhh, ohhhh, Daniloooo, scoring goals wherever he goes! That’s the Kop singing their rendition of Status Quo’s ‘Rockin all over the World’ as Danilo Orsi scores his third of the night against Mansfield Town in the Papa John’s Trophy. It was his second Town appearance and just his second professional appearance, yet he capped it off with the match ball signed by his teammates. That’s a way to make an impact at your new club. The “fox in the box” footballer who was never part of an Academy and was ready to pursue a career in IT, before trying his luck in America and then returning to climb the football pyramid, this is the footballing journey of Danilo Orsi. By Henry Whitaker Half Italian and half English with the nationalities on both sides of the family, as well as a bit of Scottish through his Nana, Orsi actually grew up in Enfield Barnet born with a football “attached” to him. Whether it was a football, or a bunch of his grandad's socks tied together, a young Danilo Orsi would spend hours at his Nana's kicking whatever he could around the house, he just loved everything about football. His dad a Chelsea fan and his grandad an Arsenal fan, there were tough decisions to make early on for Orsi. He explains how his grandad had the “stronger pull” and so he became an Arsenal fan, witnessing them play some of their best football. The invincible season at Highbury, a trip to Paris for the 2006 Champions League Final against Barcelona, Orsi was there for it all. Being able to watch the likes of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp week in, week out, it’s easy to understand how he found that love to play football. Orsi’s first club was Winchmore Hill FC juniors, a local team where Orsi learnt the ropes in their football camps. He then played for Chaseside juniors he was 12 years old, and it was a club where many youngsters went on to join academies but for Orsi, who admits he was a “small kid”,
12

he never got a look in other than a very brief trial with Watford when he turned 10 years old. Sunday League was Orsi’s level throughout his teenage years and at 16 years old played for his local side in the Spartan Premier League. With natural technical ability, Orsi soon found himself playing for the under 18s, reserves and first-team all in the same week, juggling that while studying his A-Levels, looking to pursue a career in IT. “At this stage, I had no intention to become a professional footballer,” Orsi says. “It was a dream and when I hit 14/15 years old and still hadn’t been picked up by an academy or not even been near one while other lads are signing scholars and pro contracts, I didn’t think it would ever happen.” Orsi continues, “I was just going to work, I didn’t want to do university in England so was going to go into IT as I had a family friend who helped me out. I was ready to go, applying for jobs and having interviews.”

week. I then trained the entirety of the next week and then they asked me to play in a game on the Monday for the 21s. We played Hull at St Alban’s and I came on with about 20 minutes left but in at centre midfield, which was a surprise to me. I played a couple of one-twos before switching the ball across the pitch, I couldn’t believe what I’d just done. After the game, I got off the bus thinking nothing more would happen, but they told me to stay with the group to play against Crystal Palace.” For the youngster who didn’t even see himself becoming a footballer, suddenly it seemed like Premier League side Watford were ready to change all that. Orsi played against Palace, again in centre midfield and did nothing wrong, but was told at the end of that week that the coaches didn’t see a path into the first team and so his time with the Hornets was up.
However, Orsi’s plan would soon change when he got the rare opportunity to move to America to play football after one of his former Sunday League coaches got in contact with him for the first time in years. Orsi was told he could move to Tampa for six weeks, have a holiday and also play football, all expenses paid. That’s an opportunity not to be ignored. The striker was however reluctant to make the switch until his family put him straight and the next thing he knew, he was jetting off to the States to play in a tournament in Miami. He was only 18 years old yet, but Orsi stood out and was asked by Chivas Florida Fubtol Academy President Greg Bever to stay for a further three months, taking his stay to the end of May. After that successful spell, Orsi returned to England and while training with Chivas - who were on a pre-season tour in England - was invited to train with Watford’s u21s. It was out of the blue and a surprise to Orsi but a chance he wasn’t going to turn down. He recalls the first day at Watford’s training ground. “On my first day, I’m sat with Troy Deeney and Nathan Ake having breakfast. I didn’t think I should have been there. Harry Kewell had just signed as the u21s manager, and our first days were on the same day. I trained on Thursday and Friday and on the Friday went to thank the coaches, but they asked me to come back the following
14
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
“I completely agreed with them at the time,” Orsi confesses. “I was still on cloud nine though and thought I couldn’t be too far off. If that was the level, I believed I could give it a go.” Orsi got the offer to move back to America and he signed for Fort Lauderdale strikers, featuring heavily for their u23s, and becoming the club’s top scorer for that season. It led to East Florida State College approaching the striker, with them wanting to take him on as a ‘student athlete’. A stint that was meant to last five months ended up being two years long. Orsi studied business management alongside his scholarship and scored a bunch of goals, 34 in 30 games to be exact. Orsi was now 21 years old and legally allowed to drink alcohol in America but a return to England was what he was after. “If I wanted to give it a shot in England, it had to be now,” Orsi simply says. He moved back home in 2018 and signed part-time with at the time National League South Side East Thurrock. Orsi trained on Tuesday and Thursdays with a match on the weekend and under agent Burt Laurent -who had a track record of getting youngsters moves up the footballing pyramid hoped this would be the start of something very special. However, after just eight games Orsi got a text from the manager saying the club was letting him go as they wanted a more “experienced striker” to help them for what they expected to be a relegation dog fight. It was a surprise to Orsi, but

he swiftly moved onto Hungerford Town, who were bottom of the league and one place below East Thurrock. You can see where this is going… Orsi would be travelling two hours out of London to train but it all paid off when on the last day of the season Hungerford got the result needed to stay in the division, which also sent East Thurrock down. “Leaving at 2pm midweek for training was a bit of a nightmare but something I had to do to play at the level. I finished with 13 goals that season and to send East Thurrock down felt so good. Their manager told me this summer he made a mistake in letting me go, though I can understand why he made the decision he did.” The next season, Orsi moved onto Hampton and Richmond Borough. They were a bigger club and aspired to be nearer the top end of the National League South table. “Moving to Hampton was probably one of the best footballing decisions I could have made at the time,” Orsi explains. “The way Gary McCann and his staff worked; they improved my game so much. We went unbeaten away from home right until Covid and we were three points off playoffs with 10 games to go. We were the inform team and thought we’d comfortably get playoffs. Covid hit and then was the end of that.” Orsi was placed on furlough, with the club topping up the remaining 20% of his wage until his contract expired in May. At that point he was in the same boat as many other footballers at that level, looking and hoping a club higher up would take the gamble. Thankfully for Orsi - now 24 years old in this journey Maidenhead were keen to have Orsi on their books and he joined the National League club for the 2020/21 season. He was now training three times a week and it was in this season where
16
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
his footballing career really took off. The National League season started late, and it wasn’t until after Christmas that Orsi worked his way into The Magpies’ starting XI. When he did though, there was a feeling every time he touched the ball, it would end up in the back of the net. The half English half Italian scored 21 goals in his debut season in the National League, and it was the most goals scored from open play that campaign. Two goals in two minutes against Weymouth just five weeks before the team played no football due to other teams having Covid gave the manager a decision to make, and when they returned to action in February, Orsi became the main man. “I knew once I got my chance, I’d do something, so I just had to keep that belief,” Orsi says. “After Christmas, it took off and everything went my way. I was brimming with confidence. Anything that dropped in and around the box went in - a real fox in the box type striker." “People tell me I just seem to have this knack of being in the right place at the right time,” he adds. “It’s something I’ve tried to help others with, but I think so much of it is just instinct. All my goals throughout my career have been like that but I take it. I’d had two good seasons in the south and I just needed to repeat that in the National League. My family were all for it, especially my mum. We’d seen so many players do it and with clubs being very tight with money because of Covid, they were looking at NonLeague players seeing if they could find a gem on a free transfer.” Maidenhead finished midtable and with Orsi’s contract now up, it was just a matter of time before he moved on to bigger things. Several clubs throughout the Football League were rumoured to be interested in the striker but it would be Harrogate Town that Orsi chose to put pen to paper with.

The striker’s Town and professional debut came against Barrow in August in what was a “massive moment” for Orsi. A hattrick in the Papa John’s Trophy soon followed before scoring his first Football League goal against Scunthorpe on 9th October. With Luke Armstrong starting like a house on fire and Jack Muldoon having three seasons of fine form under his belt, breaking into the starting XI straight away was never going to be easy and for Orsi, it’s been a case of staying patient and taking the chance when it comes. Five goals in seven appearances would suggest he’s doing just that.
Orsi recalls his visit to Rudding Park where he chatted to Chairman Irving Weaver and Manager Simon Weaver for two hours and it was during that long conversation, he knew Harrogate would be his next destination. “I wanted to find a club that fits me best; quite a close-knit, family orientated club where everyone knows everyone and where the manager and coaching staff want to develop players. From the conversations with the Chairman, he had such passion and direction for the club that it really brought me towards it, and I wanted to be a part of it. After the chat, I went for a walk around Rudding Park with my mum and we knew from that meeting this was the place I wanted to be.” Orsi signed his first professional contract at the age of 25 years old and it bears some resemblance to the story of Premier League striker and winner Jamie Vardy, who worked his way through the football pyramid to make it right to the top. Orsi chuckles at the comparison but he sees the similarities. “If I could be anywhere near as good as him then unbelievable,” Orsi smiles. “I’m just taking it year by year and enjoying it as much as I can. Being a pro, it’s something I’ve wanted to be since a kid. I love playing football so I’m happy every day. I just love scoring goals and will celebrate it in training just as much as I do on a Saturday.”

“That day alone (against Barrow) was just great. To get my first appearance and say I’ve done it, it was an amazing feeling but at the same time, it’s given me a taste for more, I want to make more appearances, score goals, and establish myself. The cup game is a funny one as I knew I’d probably start. I said to myself to go and do something to make a statement. To score my first goal and hattrick on the same night was great and to hear the song the fans have for me was so good and such a boost, something I really appreciate.” “Then against Scunthorpe, wow, what a day that was for everyone involved with the club. The stadium was bouncing, and it added so much to the afternoon. It’s hard to explain but hearing that roar and support just shifts us up another gear. When we got awarded the penalty, I thought Thommo (George Thomson) would be taking it, but the Gaffer shouted over for me to have it and I must thank him for giving me that opportunity to score my first Football League goal. It was a big moment for me." “The team has started well and there’s healthy competition. We all get on and I’ve just got to keep working hard and take the opportunities that come my way, putting the ball in the back of the net, and giving the Gaffer food for thought. “I feel like I’ve settled in well and adapted well to full-time football so now I’m just looking forward to the future and seeing what happens. We want to do as well as we can and people can talk about what they think we’ll achieve but we’re just taking it week by week, enjoying the ride, working hard for each other, and seeing where that can take us.”

Rovers signed goalkeeper Ross Doohan on a season long loan from Celtic in the Summer. The promising young shot stopper, who spent time on loan with Micky Mellon at Dundee United and also at Ross County last term, recently signed a new contract at his parent club. The Scotland U21 international joined Tranmere to provide cover for Scott Davies who is still injured after rupturing his Achilles in March. The 23-yearold has started the last five league games for Rovers and has kept an impressive four clean sheets in the process.

Arriving at the Club in January 2020, the experienced defender has made over 750 appearances over a career spanning 22 years. The 39-yearold began his playing career at Everton in the Premier League as well as undergoing loan spells at Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry City during his time at Goodison Park. Permanent moves between 2002 and 2020 at Blackpool (twice) Southend United, Huddersfield Town, Bury, Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town meant that Clarke has played in all four tiers the EFL.
Signing on a season-long loan from Sunderland, Hawkes is a 22-year-old midfeilder who can play centrally or in a wide role. He impressed in Sunderland’s U23 side last season, with 13 goals in 19 starts and after a promising pre-season with Sunderland’s first team, scored his first senior goal for the Black Cats during a 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Port Vale. Hawkes has made an immediate impact at Prenton Park, impressing his new employers and team mates and scoring his first Tranmere goal last Friday against Colchester United.

Then successive corners within seven minutes of the restart saw Tranmere race 3-1 ahead, with Kaiyne Woolery and Vaughan both scoring from close range. Harrogate were dealt a blow when Connor Hall was shown a second yellow card 20 minutes from time, but it did not show as Josh March pulled one back seconds later. BTEC & YOUTH TEAMS UPDATE
BTEC EDUCATION SIDES RECORD FIRST LEAGUE VICTORIES
by Josh Walsh
With the Academy side not in action at the weekend, Josh Walsh gives us an update on the BTEC Education Programme. After getting a record number of 40 students on the course, we added Carey Huegett to the coaching staff. Carey will be the lead coach of our Third team and assistant coach to Tom Hullock in the Second team who has stayed on with us for his second year. Carey (Ladies First Team manager) brings a wealth of experience and gives the girls on the course a pathway to senior football. The leagues are up and running and both the First and Second teams recorded their first wins recently. Last week the first team won 7-1 against Billingham Synthonia with Joe Payette grabbing a hattrick and Arron Sweete, Harry Lee, Charlie Owen and Harry Lazenby all chipping
in with a goal each. Meanwhile the Second team won 5-3 against UFCA. First years Nathan Young, Alex Sands, Alex Cassells and Elliot Summers all on the score sheet. It's been great to see the standard of the first years that have come on the course this year. There's real competition for places which brings out the best in everyone. Owen Dunckley has recently come in to the first team and performed really well. Arron Sweete and Joel Barker who have both come through our PDC system have also made appearances throughout the season and both started against Billingham.

Introducing the next generation of Town stars..
Brad Williams
Fresh from making his first team debut in the Papa John's Trophy against Newcastle United U21s, we get to know Academy winger Brad Williams a bit better...
Brad Williams DOB: 3rd September 2004 Birth Place: Bath Position: Winger Squad Number: 47 Height: 5ft 7 Foot: Right-footed Boots: Nike Phantom GT Football Hero: Wayne Rooney Team Supported: Hull City
What first made you get involved with Town? I knew about town when they first got promoted to league 2 and it seemed like a great club. When I found out about the trials they were putting on, I came to see if I could maybe get a scholarship. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I think my strengths are my speed and my ability to beat players in a 1v1 so I can create chances to score or assist. Biggest influence in your football progression so far? Kris Blakestone as he was the one who noticed me when I was seven years old and got me into
Hull City's Academy. He then helped me progress all the way through the Tigers Academy into a better player.
determination but I think with the set of lads we have and their ability, we can do that and beat a lot of teams.
How do you think your game has developed whilst at Town? I've become a lot more confident in my ability and have been able to use my speed a lot more wisely to get past defenders to create chances for the team.
What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? I am hoping to get a pro contract and play in the first team at Town, or if not at Town, hopefully with another club in order to continute with my football journey.
What are you hoping to achieve in the Academy side this season? I'm hoping to contribute with as many goal contributions as I can. I also would like us to finish top half of the table which will take a lot of hard work and
What is the best thing about being involved with Town? The best thing is coming to training and seeing the first team train as that’s where all of us ultimately want to be. Seeing them every day helps massively with my development.

On today’s match day, I will be on day 116 of my 120 day challenge. So - you know you’ve had an epic challenge when you’re wearing your seventh pair of shoes. And that’s because the previous six pairs have seen me trek over 3000 miles - approximately 6.4 million steps, since I left home on 26th June. I will still have four marathons to complete after today but being back in Yorkshire is heaven.
We’ve met some great people along the way and
On completion of this epic challenge I will have completed 3180 miles, 6.8 million steps, having visited every county in England, completed the coasts of Isle of Wight, Anglesey and Isle of Man. Trekked in Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales, climbed Snowden and Ben Nevis - even completed one on a ferry crossing! Temperatures have ranged from 30 degrees in Cornwall to -10 on Ben Nevis.

TOWN LADIES Town Ladies First XI 2021-22
TOWN U17 GIRLS 8-0 WIGTON MOOR The Under 17 girls continued their fantastic form with another win this weekend as they put eight past Wigton Moor without conceding in an emphatic win. A tremendous team performance saw Town dominate from start to finish. Despite creating a hatful of chances in the first half, Town only went in 2-0 up at half time. The first one came from Eva Jenkins who finished off a well worked team move. The second came from a Liv Johnson corner which Niamh Tyssen volleyed home.
reports by Carey Huegett
After half time, the girls came alive as they converted a further six chances to make it 8-0. Niamh Tyssen bagged her hattrick after two great goals in quick succession, followed by Lydia Corner scoring her first of the game with a lovely finish. Niamh went on to grab a fourth goal after great link up play with Eva Jenkins. Niamh then returned the favour to set Eva Jenkins up for her second of the game and Town’s eighth!

TOWN LADIES RESERVES 4-1 OSSETT UTD Harrogate Town Ladies Reserves capped off a great weekend as they also enjoyed a 4-1 victory in the league against Ossett United. Despite creating numerous chances, Town went in at the break disappointed as they hadn’t been able to convert any opportunities and capitalise on their dominance. After half time, Town continued to pile on the pressure on the Ossett defence, whose goalkeeper pulled off
save after save, before against the run of play, Ossett took the lead as their winger got in behind the Town defence and calmly slotted the ball home. This kicked the girls into action and they upped the intensity. Two goals from Jess Flynn, one from Nat Eustance and a further goal from
34 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Em Crispin sealed the victory. Jess Flynn’s final goal was the pick of the bunch as she rifled the ball in off the bar from the edge of the area.

Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I've played football since I was seven at various clubs. I started as a centre back, then moved to right back before playing on the wing as I scored a few goals but realised it was just a phase and I was better in defence. I joined Town this season after moving to Harrogate.
What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Arsenal and when I was growing up, my favourite player was Theo Walcott.
What attracted you to Town? My job as Club Secretary at Town and wanting to make friends in the area.
What is the best thing about being involved with Town? At Town, we have a really good set of girls who all stick together which doesn’t happen in a lot of girls teams!
What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I'm composed at the back and don’t panic. What are the goals you would like to achieve at Town? To be better with my crosses with my left foot and to score 4 or 5 goals a season.
What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? I want to enjoy football as long as I can whilst playing at a good level and pushing to be at a higher level with the team.
What do you think of the squad? Really strong, a lot of individual players with strengths that as a team work well together. What are you most looking forward to this season? Seeing how well we do in the league, hopefully a promotion party at the end of the season.
3
DOB: 4th June 1997 Birth Place: Bolton Nickname: Abs Position: Left Back Height: 5'4 Football Hero: Thierry Henry Team Supported: Arsenal Favourite holiday destination you have been to? Greece, not one specific island, I just love them. What destination is top of your Bucket List? Australia. Favourite film? Die Hard - all the box set.
What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? I need to get involved straight away otherwise I switch off and start bad. Best game so far? Why? Yorkshire Amateurs away, I had three assists, did a superb megs and was solid at the back. Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My mum - she watched her back herself throughout the years and taught me to be the way I am. Gameday song? Currently it's Heat by Paul Woodford but changes a lot through the season.

GETTING TO KNOW...
What are you currently watching on Netflix? Money Heist. If you had to live on a desert island for a year and could only take 3 team mates, who would you take? Cass Lane, Rach McDonald and Shannon Beale – none of them would annoy me. How would your team mates describe you? Crazy, ditsy, blonde! What advice would you give to young boys and girls playing football? To give your all in every game and never leave the pitch thinking you could have done more. Your motto in life? To go with the flow.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
