LEST WE FORGET

Words by Mike Partridge Associate Director, Harrogate Town AFC Trustee, HTAFC Community Foundation

Today is the match when Harrogate Town remembers the men and women of our armed forces, who have protected us and our fellow-countrymen in two World Wars and in other armed conflicts.

Gary Collins

As Club Historian, Phil Harrison explains opposite, we have had many close connections with the military over the years. Indeed our very first match was delayed by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Today we enjoy close relationships with Veterans’ organisations and military charities and with local military units, notably the Army Foundation College. To represent all members of the services, past and present, we are pleased to welcome some local Veterans as our guests to today’s match. Gary Collins served for thirteen years as an NCO in the RAF Regiment with active tours in Belize, Germany, Northern Ireland and the First Gulf War. He was also a member of the Queen’s Colour Squadron at Buckingham Palace, St James’ Palace and the Tower of London.

John Topping

John Topping was appointed Secretary of the Yorkshire and Humber Veterans Advisory Committee ten years ago. He provides practical assistance to military Veterans, including those with serious mental health issues. He served for twenty five years in the Royal Corps of Signals notably in a special communications role in various parts of the world. Alan Pitchfork is Chairman of the Knaresborough branch of the Royal British Legion. He served in the Royal Navy for twelve years in both surface vessels and submarines. In 1969 he was a member of the crew of HMS Repulse on one of the first Polaris nuclear deterrent patrols. Please wear a Poppy for Remembrance Day and enjoy the game today.

PAYING OUR RESPECTS Before the start of today’s match our Club Captain, Josh Falkingham, will lay a poppy wreath on the centre circle accompanied by Royal British Legion Standard Bearer Paul Darley. A Minute’s Silence will be observed for us to pay our respects to those who have lost their lives in the service of our country.

HARROGATE TOWN AND ITS PLAYERS DURING THE TWO WORLD WARS The football club that was to become Harrogate Town was formed in 1914 and secured admission to the Northern League in June of that year. The team should have been playing at Bishop Auckland on Saturday, 5 September. Instead a telegram was sent to the League two hours before kick-off, which simply read ‘Cannot come, Writing! The resultant letter withdrew the club from the league without having played a single game. It read, ‘In view of a very strong public feeling and the refusal of our members to support football during the present crisis and the fact that our secretary and 17 players have joined the regiments, we reluctantly have been compelled to postpone our fixtures during the duration of the War….. We very much regret the necessity of taking this step.’ Most other clubs continued to play that season. Harrogate AFC was re-formed in 1919 and reconstituted as Harrogate Hotspurs in 1932. On Saturday, 2 September 1939 the team were beaten at home by Carlton United. The following day at 11.15am war was declared with Germany. For the next three weeks no football was played until the West Riding F.A. decided it should continue. Naturally the war caused considerable disruption to the leagues and to individual clubs with many players absent on military service. The Club’s wartime opposition included teams representing the RAF, the Royal Artillery and the Royal Signals. In November 1942 the Harrogate players embarked on a mission to raise money for The Red Cross Prisoners of War Fund. They set themselves a target of making £5 by the end of the year but actually realised £137! Harrogate players were wounded or lost in action during the World Wars; others were honoured for their bravery. Lieutenant G Tolley was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in September 1919. Eric Stephenson played for Harrogate in the 1932/33 season and was subsequently transferred to Leeds United. He played for England alongside Stanley Matthews in 1938 and was killed in action in 1944 whilst serving in Burma as a Major in the Ghurka Rifles. Jack Syson served in the Royal Navy throughout the Second World War and subsequently scored 60 goals in 62 matches for Harrogate Town between 1951 and 1955. With thanks to Phil Harrison, Club Historian

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Verse from For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon

THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER We’re over a quarter of the way through the season now and the games keep coming thick and fast. Since my last programme notes, we’ve played Tranmere and Hartlepool with the two games providing opposite emotions at the full time whistle. I think Tranmere was our toughest challenge at home so far. They were a very, very strong opposition and they’re destined to be in that top three come the end of the season, so to finish a 2-2 draw I thought was a fair reflection of the game, and especially after a tricky first 15 minutes, I thought we showed a lot of character and a lot of ability as well. There were over 2,500 supporters in the terraces for that Tuesday night fixture and I thought it made for a brilliant atmosphere. I know there’s bigger fan bases and stadiums at this level, but for us and where we've been in terms of attendances, the ground and the infrastructure, there’s promising signs that's for sure. We then headed on one of our shorter away days of the season, travelling up to Victoria Park to face Hartlepool United, a side we’d done well against in the past from our National League days. However, we knew they were a different team now and their strong home record this season also was something we knew would be a challenge. In the first half, once we got people prioritising defending rather than attacking, we remained solid and we picked Hartlepool off at times and it could have and actually should have been more than 2-0 by the half time break. We frustrated them but we always knew that with the sell-out crowd that Hartlepool had, there could be a shift in momentum, and when that did happen, we needed to react better than we did.

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

We knew they’d change shape for the second half and we had gone through it in detail before the game what shape they could play, but we just didn’t execute the plan. Saying that, the goals we conceded were less about tactics and more about being soft and not dealing with balls into the box. We've got to lay a glove, we've got to be ruthless and we've got to have that real intensity about our defending. Although we have that real attacking instinct at the moment, defensively it’s lacking. Despite the poor showing second half, the supporters were brilliant and we all really appreciate the reaction at the end. It's all still very positive. We’ve got Bristol Rovers at home today and it’s a chance to get back to winning ways. Bristol Rovers are a big club who will bring a big following with them. They’re a side with some high profile names that will hurt us if we don’t defend properly, so we want to see an improvement there and also for us to show more personality in our play. We’re proud of the record we have at the EnviroVent Stadium this season and we’ll certainly be looking to make up for last week.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM In our last home meeting, against Tranmere Rovers, I thought it was a really good evening with two good sides going toe to toe. Both were desperate for the win and didn’t want to settle for a draw at any point. It was a really tough test, but in front of a great crowd, it made for a really good atmosphere and we want more nights like that. Reflecting on that game, I think we were happy to come away with a point against a side who will no doubt be near the top come May. We then moved onto Hartlepool who have excellent home form, but we still went into the contest really confident. It’s fair to say it wasn’t our best start to a match this season but we won’t always start the better team or dominate from the off. We did, however, ride our luck a little but kept the clean sheet and grew into the half, and when we do that and apply pressure in the right areas, we’ve got goal scorers who put the ball in the back of the net. We went into the break 2-0 up and in a good place having experienced a tough first 20 minutes. Things went wrong in the second half and it wasn’t a nice feeling for any of us. When momentum swings in football that quickly and three shots later you’ve gone from 2-0 up to 3-2 down with a good crowd behind them, it made it very difficult. Unfortunately we weren’t able to control the game and deal with the situations that came at us and once Hartlepool got the lead, we allowed them to stay on top and from there they just saw the game out and we never managed to get any momentum back. It was very disappointing for us and the fans. We want to put things right against Bristol Rovers on Saturday who are one of the biggest clubs in the league this season and have a massive following. With that comes its own pressures

8

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

but more importantly we have to concentrate on ourselves. We’ve worked really hard this week and dissected where we went wrong in previous matches, so we feel well prepared to deal with their threats. Our home form means we can go into the game with confidence, knowing we’ll have great support come 3pm on Saturday. On a personal note, my next appearance will be my 200th for Town and I’d just like to say how much I’ve loved every second. We all know how far we’ve come together on this journey so far and I want to make more memories, work hard and achieve more with this great football club. Nonetheless, the main focus has to be on the here and now and so the plan and priority is for three points today.

14 handy tips to help you reduce condensation in your home this winter...

Condensation occurs when warm air collides with cold surfaces, or when there's too much humidity in your home and creates water, water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it. This is especially common in winter, when your central heating system comes on in the cooler hours of the mornings and evenings. While condensation itself isn’t a problem, if you do not treat it, it can cause damp patches to form where mould can grow and this can be bad for your health, as well as damaging the fabric of your home. If you are seeing lots of condensation in your home and are worrying about it developing into damp, a free home survey by one of our local ventilation specialists can help you get to the bottom of your problem.

14 WAYS TO REDUCE CONDENSATION IN YOUR HOME 1. Use pan lids when cooking 2. Close kitchen and bathroom doors 3. Dry clothes outdoors 4. Turn on the extractor fan when your using the shower 5. Ensure washing machine is correctly vented 6. Move furniture away from external walls 7. Install an extractor fan 8. Open windows when it's warmer outside 9. Wipe down cold surfaces 10. Ensure your property has adequate heating 11. Don't overfill wardrobes and cupboards 12. Stop using portable gas and paraffin heaters 13. Install double glazing, loft and wall insulation

NEED HELP WITH CONDENSATION, MOULD OR DAMP PROBLEMS? Adequate ventilation is essential to allow the moisture to escape from a property before it turns into condensation. Installing an energyefficient extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom can improve the humidity levels and prevent condensation. An alternative approach would be to have a whole house ventilation system installed in your home, ATMOS® can provide a condensation-free environment and can help reduce the moisture levels throughout your home.

PLAYER IN FOCUS

JACK DIAMOND

Diamond by name, Diamond by nature. That was the description by BT Sport commentators as Harrogate Town loanee Jack Diamond scored Town’s third and deciding goal which sealed the club’s promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history. On loan from Sunderland, at the time 19-year-old Diamond provided pace and sparkle throughout the 2019-20 season and now two years later, the winger has returned looking to help the club once again push for glory. This is Jack Diamond’s journey to Harrogate Town... By Henry Whitaker Born in Washington, County Durham, Diamond grew up surrounded by a heavily passionate football fanbase. From a very young age, he was kicking a football and watching TV boxsets of Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff and Pele tear teams apart with their individual brilliance. The close control and quick feet caught Diamond’s eye and the youngster found himself trying to replicate those greats on five aside pitches, where he’d aim to get one on one with an opposing player before dancing past with ease. He soon found himself with Darlington’s u10s in their centre of excellence before that closed and from there, the winger played for his local boys’ club until the age of 14. At this point, Diamond was beginning to notice he was attracting attention from Premier League teams. First came Sunderland who just after one trial game wanted him to sign onto the academy. Newcastle then offered Diamond the same opportunity but the Washington lad chose the Black Cats as the place to further his development.

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

“It felt like it was all happening at once,” Diamond says. “Both offered the same thing but I felt like I knew Sunderland a bit more and with Newcastle, it felt like they wanted us just because Sunderland did. My dad was always telling me I had to enjoy myself first, that was the priority,” Diamond continues. “I had played with a lot of people who came out of academies because they didn’t enjoy it and I know a lot that don’t play anymore as they just burn out mentally. It’s a ruthless environment as you’re valued on how good you are and it can turn a lot of people off, but my parents were all for it and were keen for me to do something I was good at.” Diamond went into the Sunderland set up with a “point to prove” as he explains how most of the team had been together for years and were a close bunch. He arrived at the Academy of Light as a centre midfielder but soon found himself playing further forward in the number 10 role. His ability to pick up possession and carry the ball at pace made Diamond a standout player and he was soon jumping through the age groups ahead of time.

17

new contract early, I was already looking to get the next one, to keep pushing. It’s a bigger deal now when I think about it, but at the time, it was just the next thing I needed to do. I never took a moment to think about it.” The winger was now spending the majority of his days with the u23s and after a collection of strong performances, found himself in the mix with the first team, learning off the likes of Ireland international Aiden McGeady, who Diamond says wanted to help him as much as possible. Jump forward to October 2018 and Diamond had made his professional debut for Sunderland, coming on as a substitute at the Stadium of Light in the Checkatrade Trophy against Carlisle. The winger explains how that throughout the match the nerves were building as the big moment was set to come his way.

For the coaches, the challenge was to now find a place in the older academy teams to keep Diamond progressing. They decided to play him on the left wing with the freedom to drift inside, it’s a position he’s played ever since. At 15 years old, Diamond was given his first contract (a year earlier than the norm) which was made up of a standard two-year youth team scholarship followed by a one-year pro deal. It was at this age where Diamond believes he started to really “kick on”. “At that age, people are built so different and I was still small and skinny but it’s a vital time in a player’s development. I dealt with it well playing with older players and it led to me playing with the u18s which gave me a taste of the more physical side of the game. It was a hammering on my body so I took on every bit of information. I was always battling against myself and the others in the academy,” Diamond adds. “At the end of the day, it’s a very selfish place. Everyone is fighting for that same goal and it doesn’t feel like it’s about the team, it’s about self-improvement and trying to get one up on your teammates.” After completing just one year of his scholarship, Diamond signed his first professional contract and was edging closer and closer to the first team. “It was the reward for doing well,” Diamond states. “My goal was to never see a contract out or for it to be in anyone else’s hands. Even if I had got a

18

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

“I just remember warming up so much. I was nervous and sweating just waiting for the moment. I came on with about 15 minutes to go and I was everywhere, just trying to get on the ball. I did well and I was buzzing with that.” A first start came a month later against Morecambe in the same competition and Diamond was very much so “enjoying the taste” of men’s football. The remainder of Diamond’s 2018/19 season was with the u23s but the plan was in place for the youngster to go out on loan the following season. He was told by former Sunderland player and now club ambassador Kevin Ball that the loan was the "best thing for his development" and although doing well for the u23s was promising, he now had to do it for a first team. A 19-year-old Jack Diamond would join Harrogate Town for the 2019/20 National League season, looking to help the side push for promotion to the Football League. The winger recalls his first day meeting the squad at the EnviroVent Stadium wherein a couple of hours the team would play against Chorley FC. “It was a completely new environment for me,” Diamond explains. “I saw men sitting in the dressing room and I come in and I thought they’re probably looking at me like ‘here’s another academy player coming in thinking he’s all this’. I was nervous, not for the football as I back my ability, but for settling into the environment. I just wanted to get on the pitch, and once I did, it got easier and easier. The lads here are great and I don’t think you’ll find many clubs that are so close-

knit and so honest. A big thing when I arrived was that everyone wanted me to do well for the team but also myself so I could kick on in my career. They’re very humble and selfless people, here for me as I am for them.” Diamond featured against Chorley and then began to make the left-wing position his own. However, despite positive showings, the all-important end product seemed to be lacking and by New Year’s Day, the winger had failed to get on the scoresheet. It was something Diamond had been told to improve upon in the past and it was driving him crazy. It all changed, however, on an away trip to Darlington in the FA Trophy, where the winger scored his first goal for the club as Town won 2-0 and progressed further into the competition. It was the boost Diamond needed. “My performances were good and it had always been the case for 2-3 years that my end product needed improving”, Diamond admits. “It was hammered into us to the point where I’d go mad when someone said it, I was having dreams about it, it was constantly in my head. I remember saying just after Christmas that I just needed one goal to get things going.” The winger went on to get three goals from the next six league matches and was part of a Town team that looked destined to knock Barrow off the top of the table. Then Covid-19 hit. Diamond recalls the moment the first game got called off as he got a text while waiting for the coach in Wetherby. From there it was uncertainty after uncertainty for the young winger as he had no idea whether he’d get the chance to help finish the season with Town. There were talks about automatic promotion, playoffs, null and void but when the playoffs were announced and Diamond got the all-clear to return to North Yorkshire, he became “fixed” on helping the team get promoted. A 1-0 victory at home against Boreham Wood set up the final at Wembley Stadium against Notts County and we all remember how that went. A blistering start from Town saw Simon Weaver’s side 2-0 up at half-time before a free-kick from Notts County just after the break reminded everyone the tie wasn’t over. As the Magpies pushed for the equaliser, space was appearing and in the 70th minute, Town took full advantage. Jack Muldoon carried the ball down the right before delivering the inch-perfect cross into the penalty box for Diamond to glance the ball past the

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

keeper. The winger runs over towards the camera, strikes a pose, and then embraces his teammates. It was the goal that confirmed promotion. Diamond returned to Sunderland for the 202021 season and felt ready to make the step up to League One. The winger had a strong pre-season and was then sporadically used by Phil Parkinson at left wing-back until Parkinson's sacking in November. Diamond admits that he “wanted more” after previously having a full season of football under his belt and the winger even asked on a couple of occasions if he could go out on loan, but the management staff were adamant Diamond would have a part to play. The arrival of Lee Johnson just before Christmas saw Diamond get an instant run in the team and he provided both goals and assists as the Black Cats tried to keep up the pace with their promotion-chasing rivals. Having just turned 21 at the start of 2021, Diamond is still a young player learning the ropes and so found himself in and out of the side as the campaign progressed. When the season reached its end, Sunderland were in the play-offs and Diamond featured in their semi-final second leg against Lincoln City but they lost the contest 3-2 on aggregate. It would be another season in League One for the former Premier League side. “It was a very up and down season,” Diamond admits.

"I had a good run of games but the team changed around a lot, and as a young player, you need consistency and that comes from playing games. I think I did improve during that period of ups and downs but it was just hard to find consistency.”

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I

19

“The relationship between me and the people at the club did help in my decision, but it was near the bottom of the list for me when choosing a club,” Diamond explains. “First things first, I want to play and I know Thirs (Paul Thirlwell) and the Gaffer also want me to play, so that was important. They don’t settle for average and I know if I’m not performing well, I won’t play. The club are also at the top end of the table so it makes total sense for me to come back. Straight away it felt like I was back in the family. There were new faces as well but everyone was really excited for the season. I’ve got a lot of friends here, but the first thing was that the team was flying and I needed to show enough that I could even deserve to start. It was apparent straight away how competitive and strong the squad is.”

Now approaching the start of the 2021/22 season, Diamond was again set to fight for his place in the Sunderland starting XI and this time make that left-wing position his own. He featured against Town during pre-season, but a week before the transfer window was due to shut, the winger had a conversation with Johnson who informed him that another winger was being brought in on loan and that would probably reduce Diamond’s time on the pitch. The option was to stay or to go out on loan. Diamond chose the latter. As soon as Harrogate Town fans heard that information, suddenly any Tweet, Facebook post or pre-match interview would have fans replying ‘announce Diamond’, ‘where’s Diamond?’. It was a move that if successful, would have fans overjoyed. Behind the scenes, assistant manager Paul Thirlwell had been in contact with Sunderland throughout pre-season letting them know that Town would be interested in Diamond if he did become available. Once he was, the deal moved at a rapid pace. On Monday the contract was finalised and on Tuesday afternoon, Diamond arrived at the EnviroVent Stadium for media duties and to meet his old pals. It was the transfer the manager wanted, the transfer the fans wanted and the transfer they all got. For Diamond, returning to Town wasn’t just about being somewhere he has mates already but being at a club he believes can achieve so much this campaign.

20 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Four days after returning to the club, Diamond was thrown straight into the starting XI against Mansfield Town and showed just why the Town coaching staff were so keen to bring him back. Direct running, a hard work rate and individual brilliance capped off a Man of the Match performance from the winger in the 3-1 victory against the Stags. Diamond’s first goal since his comeback came against Oldham and he then played an instrumental role in Town’s 6-1 demolition of Scunthorpe United earlier this month. It was the type of display Diamond believes no team would be able to deal with. “We were electric and while we’re like that I don’t think anyone can stop us. Everything we did was in sync and made for an enjoyable day,” Diamond says. “It’s such a tight stadium that when it’s full it sounds really good, we love playing at home as it feels like a den and creates a great atmosphere.” With his entire future ahead of him, 21-year-old Jack Diamond can no doubt be optimistic and confident about what lies ahead. With aspirations of making it to the very top, the winger has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon. “I want to keep kicking on and improving and help the team get as close we can for promotion. On a personal level, I want to build on my numbers but the main aim this season is to push for the promotion spots and hopefully the automatic ones. Long term I want to play in the Premier League, that’s the big goal. There are steps I need to keep reaching for and at the moment it’s to play football regularly. As simple as it is, that’ll improve me and help me get to where I want to be."

NICKNAME

The Gas The Pirates

Bristol Rovers have had a turbulent decade of highs and lows. The Gas started the decade in League One but found themselves in the National League in 2014. That then sparked back-to-back promotions to League One under the management of Darrell Clarke. Last season was a disappointing campaign for Rovers as they finished bottom of League One to end their five-year stint in the third tier. Joey Barton became manager in February initially tasked with keeping Rovers in League One, but after relegation in May, has now been given the task to try and get the club back into League One at the first time of asking.

Memorial Stadium CAPACITY 12,296

KEY INS & OUTS

Over the Summer the Gas utilised the transfer window heavily letting go of 22 players and bringing in 17 fresh faces. It wasn’t however the best start to life in League Two as Rovers lost four of their opening seven league games and found themselves at the wrong end of the table but in recent weeks things appear to have settled and they are climbing their way back up the table.

IN THE DUGOUT

Joey Barton is the man in charge at the Memorial Stadium having taken the managerial post at the Gas in February this year, with the side languishing in the relegation zone of Sky Bet League One. As a player, Barton started his career at Manchester City in 2002 and went on to play for Newcastle United, QPR, Marseille, Burnley (twice) and Rangers. The majority of his domestic playing career was in the Premier League and in all he made 435 career appearances and scored 33 league goals. He also gained one England cap, in a friendly against Spain in 2007. This is his second role in management, having previously been at the helm at League One Fleetwood Town after his appointment in June 2018. He immediately retired from playing to concentrate on his first managerial job. He guided the Cod Army to the play-offs in 2019/20 and spent two and a half years at Highbury Stadium before leaving in January 2021.

Goalkeeper Bert Hoyle was signed from Exeter City and made his debut as Bristol Rovers kicked off with a 1-0 Third Division (South) win over Swindon Town, winning 13 of their first 16 home League games. Bert Tann's side defeated Llanelly 3-1, Gillingham 2-1, Aldershot 5-1, Luton Town 2-1 and Hull City 3-0 in the FA Cup before taking eventual winners Newcastle United to a sixth round replay. Top scorer Vic Lambden, Bert Hoyle, Ray Warren and Peter Sampson were ever-present as Rovers finished sixth in the Third Division (South).

1952/53

Bert Tann guided Bristol Rovers to the Third Division (South) title in 1952/53. They won five of their opening six matches and stormed to the top with a thrilling 27 match unbeaten run, including a club record 12 successive wins. Brighton were trounced 7-0 and at one stage Rovers held a ten point lead, with the 0-0 draw at Bristol City watched by 35,372. Howard Radford replaced the injured Bert Hoyle in goal and top scorer Geoff Bradford grabbed a hat-trick as Rovers clinched the title with a 3-1 win at home to Newport. Harry Bamford, Geoff Fox, Jackie Pitt, Ray Warren, Peter Sampson and Vic Lambden were ever-present.

1988/89

Bristol Rovers challenged strongly for promotion to the top-flight in 1955/56. Bert Tann's side started with a 1-1 draw at Port Vale and won seven of their next eight games. Ace marksman Geoff Bradford scored on his England debut against Denmark in early October and starred as Rovers hammered Middlesbrough 7-2, then beat Manchester United 4-0 in the FA Cup third round. He grabbed a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Hull City but was injured in the FA Cup fourth round replay defeat at Doncaster and missed the rest of the season. Rovers' promotion hopes ended with a 2-1 defeat at rivals Leeds United and they finished sixth.

Bert Tann managed Bristol Rovers to the FA Cup sixth round for the second time in 1957/58. Barrie Meyer netted a hat-trick as Rovers thrashed Derby 5-2 in their opening home match, then Alfie Biggs emulated his feat in a 5-3 victory at Stoke. They also slammed five goals past Notts County and Middlesbrough but in a season of high-scoring games, Rovers lost 6-4 at Swansea, 6-1 at West Ham and crashed to a record 7-0 home defeat against Grimsby as they finished mid-table in the Second Division. Rovers defeated Mansfield 5-0, Burnley 3-2 and Bristol City 4-3 in the FA Cup before they lost 3-1 at Fulham in the sixth round.

They went seven points clear at the top but the undefeated run ended with a 1-0 reverse at Wrexham in early February and the title challenge faltered as they lost to rivals York and Oldham. Jim Eadie, Trevor Jacobs, Tom Stanton and Stuart Taylor were ever-present as Rovers clinched promotion as runners-up with a 0-0 draw at Southend.

Gerry Francis guided Bristol Rovers to the Third Division play-off final in 1988/89. Gary Penrice scored twice as Rovers kicked off with a 3-2 victory over Wigan and by mid-November they had won six out of eight home League games to lay fourth in the table. Phil Purnell netted two goals in Rovers' 5-1 win over Huddersfield and Steve Yates starred in the heart of defence as they maintained their promotion challenge. Loan striker Dennis Bailey scored to clinch a 1-0 victory at leaders Wolves, with Rovers qualifying for the play-offs in fifth place. They beat Fulham 5-0 but lost 2-1 on aggregate to Port Vale in the play-off final.

1989/90

Bristol Rovers won the Third Division championship under Gerry Francis in 1989/90. They raced to the top of the table after losing just once in their opening 18 games but striker Gary Penrice moved to Watford and future England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn joined Crystal Palace. Brian Parkin took over in goal and Carl Saunders arrived from Stoke, netting a hat-trick as Rovers triumphed 6-1 at home to Wigan in early March. Defeated only once in their last 22 matches, they beat Bristol City 3-0 in the title decider at Twerton Park. Rovers also made their first Wembley appearance but lost 2-1 to Tranmere in the Leyland/DAF Cup final.

Paul Trollope plotted Bristol Rovers’ 2006/07 League Two play-off final triumph. They won only two of their opening ten League games but gradually climbed up the table and six wins in an unbeaten eight match end to the season enabled them to qualify for the play-offs in sixth position. Rovers beat Lincoln City 7-4 on aggregate in the semi-finals, then defeated Shrewsbury Town 3-1 in the Wembley final. Rovers also beat Torquay United, Wycombe Wanderers, Peterborough United, Shrewsbury Town and rivals Bristol City en route to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final but lost 3-2 to Doncaster Rovers after extra-time.

2014/15

Bristol Rovers regained Football League status at the first attempt in 2014/15. Darrell Clarke’s side won only two of their first seven Conference games before soaring to the top with just one defeat in 30 matches. They also gained a club record 7-1 FA Cup fourth qualifying round victory

Pipped to the title by Barnet on the final day, Bristol Rovers beat Forest Green Rovers 3-0 in the play-off semifinals, then defeated Grimsby 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Wembley final.

2015/16

Bristol Rovers won promotion for the second consecutive season in 2015/16. They overcame a 1-0 defeat at home to Northampton on the opening day by winning their next three League Two games against Yeovil, Luton and Barnet. After gaining just one point in five matches, Darrell Clarke’s side lost only three times in 16 matches, including a thrilling 4-3 victory at Morecambe. Leading marksman Matty Taylor grabbed hat-tricks at home to Wycombe and Hartlepool, with Bristol Rovers losing just one of their last 14 games and clinching promotion in third place with a 2-1 victory at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on the final day.

HARROGATE TOWN 0-3 MANSFIELD TOWN report by Ross McKay

The Academy side took on Mansfield Town last Saturday in the EFL Youth Alliance Northeast. Town started the game really well, with a high intensity and a solid structure defensively. Starting on the front foot and playing in the oppositions final third is always the game plan and this was how we started with Brad Williams being rampant down the right hand side of the pitch. As the first half developed we started to create more and played excellent progressive and attacking football. Emmanuel Ilesanmi's hold up play proved to be a positive and this created a few half chances both for himself and teammates. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration in the 39th minute allowed the visitors to open the scoring. With confidence knocked and Mansfield now on the front foot, Town soon conceded another from a corner in the 43rd minute to go into the break 2-0 down.

Despite conceding two poor goals, it was a positive message at half time although a reminder that we needed to continue working hard in their final third and to be wary of Mansfield having periods of the second half in the ascendency.

Town started the second period on the front foot and continued to cause problems down the right, with Brad Williams continuing to hassle the fullback both on and off the ball, creating chances in 1v1 duals. Ultimately the Stags fullback couldn’t cope and was red carded after a second yellow card in the 60th minute. With Mansfield down to 10 men, Harrogate won a penalty in the 64th minute for the third time in successive games. Finn O’Boyle stepped up and was denied by Mansfield’s keeper who was outstanding for 90 minutes.

The game finished 3-0 to Mansfield, leaving the Academy side feeling frustrated as the result did not tell the true story of the game, with Town overall having the best of the play.

With the wind knocked out of their sails, Town still created chances but conceded a 3rd goal in the 80th mintue.

Mason Wilson DOB: 20th February 2005 Birth Place: Sheffield Position: Right Back / Centre Back Squad Number: 41 Height: 5ft 9 Foot: Right-footed Boots: Nike Phantom GT Football Hero: James Wilson (cousin) Team Supported: Sheffield Wednesday

What first made you get involved with Town? I was invited to trial having been released from my former club. I really enjoyed it, played well and was delighted to be offered a two year deal. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? 1 vs 1 defending, short and long passes and hard working. How do you think your game has developed whilst at Town? The are a lot of areas I have improved such as communication to other on and off the itch and had a chance to focus and better my passing and 1 vs 1 defending.

What are you hoping to achieve in the Academy side this season? To get as many clean sheets as possible and also to help the team win with hopefully some goals and assists.

Biggest influence in your football progression so far? My family and friends are my biggest influence because they have always supported me particularly when I've had setbacks.

What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? To make as many first team appearance as possible and get a lot of experience. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? The atmosphere in and around the changing room and the clear pathway up through the first team.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR Congratulations are in order as our England international Lawrie Coulthard made his fourth appearance for the country’s over 70s walking football team at the start of October!

Lawrie played against Ireland’s over 70s at Rayners Lane Football Club, Harrow, and was on the winning side in a convincing 4-0 victory. The day was made even more special for the Harrogate Town Walking Footballer as all five of his grandchildren; Harry, Molly, Orla, Joe and Ciara were mascots for the game, standing alongside their grandad while the national anthem was played. “It was an amazing experience when I first lined up for England to sing our National Anthem, but to have all my grandchildren standing in the same line-up singing with me and my England colleagues was incredible,” Lawrie said. “It will be something that myself and family will treasure for the rest of our lives, including our 10 month old addition, Ciara.” The over 70’s footballer had always played the ‘beautiful game’ in his younger days but his involvement with Harrogate Town’s Walking Football community didn’t come around until summer 2018, when a fellow chorister at the Harrogate Male Voice Choir invited Lawrie to come along to a session. From there, Lawrie was nominated for England trials where he impressed and subsequently became a part of the national team.

32

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Walking Football is even more important to Lawrie because of the social aspect. Lawrie sadly lost his wife Sheila to ovarian cancer in March 2020. He’s found that the support from his teammates and the Harrogate Town Community Foundation has helped him “overcome” the passing of his wife. “It is important, especially when living alone, that one has something to look forward to each week as well as playing in weekend inter-club matches. It really does help with our socialising and impacts hugely on our improved mindfulness,” Lawrie said. “Being involved with Town’s Walking Football Group has helped me overcome the loss of my dear wife Sheila, who unselfishly encouraged me to continue with my England trials even during her darkest days. She was a brave Kerry lady and it was poignant that she left us on St Patrick’s Day 17th March 2020. “I feel incredibly proud and fortunate to have earned my 4th International Cap. To say that this is a milestone in my life would be an understatement, especially in the current climate and to be fit enough to play the game I love at my age,” Lawrie added. “I do hope to continue with my England career and most certainly with Harrogate Town Football Club, health and performances permitting.”

Town Ladies First XI 2021-22

LADIES MAKE CUP HISTORY TO SET UP TIE WITH NEWCASTLE UNITED

GATESHEAD LADIES 0-2 TOWN LADIES report by Carey Huegett

Harrogate Town Ladies made history as they progressed to the First Round Proper of the FA Women’s Vitality Cup for the first time in the club’s history, following a 2-0 victory against Gateshead. After a tight first ten minutes trying to adjust to the blustery weather conditions, Town found their composure and started to play some really good football and started to create chances. Nat Eustance terrorised the home defence and some great combination play between Lindsey Whitton and Grace Adams saw Town get in behind Gateshead on several occasions only to be denied by the keeper. On the 20 minute mark, Shannon Beal put Town ahead, playing a one two with Emma Elliot on the edge of the box before unleashing

a sweet half volley into the roof of the net, lobbing the keeper in the process. Gateshead found some momentum just before half time but couldn’t capitalise thanks to Carrie Simpson in goal who pulled off a couple of fine saves and some robust defending from Rach McDonald and Captain Abbey Smith – who were both outstanding throughout the game. An injury to club captain Lindsey Whitton saw her depart before the half hour mark. Polly AsquithBrown took her place and made an instant impact as she put some fantastic crosses in the box, which Town failed to convert. After half time, the first ten minutes was a battle in the midfield. Teagan Sorokan continued to drive the team

With 25 minutes to go, Abbey Smith played a well measured ball down the wing to release Nat Eustance, who worked her magic to find a yard of space and whip in an inch perfect cross for the on rushing midfielder, Teagan Sorokan, who headed home to seal the victory and send Town through to the First Round Proper for the first ever time. GETTING TO KNOW...

Ladies Reserves'

Em Topham

Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I started playing football when I was five at Scotton Scorchers, just outside Knaresborough and played there until I was 18. That’s when I looked for an open age team, and joined the newlyformed Harrogate Town Ladies. So I am really lucky to have been involved with Town since the start. It is an amazing set up and a great club to be a part of, which is why I've been here for so long! What do you consider are the strengths of your game? Holding up the ball, shooting and giving 100%. What are your personal goals for the season? Making the first team. That is my number one aim for the season, and something I won’t give up on. I know I can get

there and that I'm close, I just need to keep working and take my chances. What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Manchester City and have done since I was eight (before I get called a plastic fan or glory supporter ha ha). My favourite player is Sergio Aguero, because he is world class. I think the ability he has on the ball, and when shooting, is insane. What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? I just want to enjoy playing and being surrounded by great people. I want to keep helping Town progress and I want to improve as a player year on year. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? That's easy - my teammates. Everyone is there for each other no matter what. They are my second family, they are all bonkers, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. What do you think of the squad? I think we are looking really good this season, I think as a club we have an amazing group of players and the two squads look really strong. I think we work so hard for each other, and we are willing to dig deep. Every player wants that first team shirt and that competition has made each player step up. What are you most looking forward to this season? Developing myself as a player, mentally and physically. Having Kez as a coach

and learning from her is a really exciting prospect for me this season. What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? Once I step over the white line, I don’t think about anything else but the game. I think about working hard, giving absolutely everything, and making sure I’m crawling off the pitch at the end with 3 points. If you had to live on a desert island for a year which 3 teammates would you take? I’d take Abbey for the party, Rach Mac for the cooking (Pad Thai) and Grace Adams, because she has a child so I’d hope she’d be able to look after us! Favourite holiday destination you have been to? No question - South Africa. Incredible country. What destination is top of your Bucket List? Canada or Australia. TV series you're watching? Just finished watching Clarksons Farm (highly recommend) on Amazon and Manifest on Sky. What advice would you give to boys and girls playing football? Enjoy your football, don’t let things get you down, and don’t give up. When things get tough, keep going. If people say you’re not good enough, go prove them wrong. But always make sure you are doing it for yourself, not others. Your motto in life? Treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
