THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER We’re back in action today but this time it’s in the FA Cup as the First Round of the competition gets underway. It’s a magical competition and we’re really looking forward to welcoming Wrexham back to the EnviroVent Stadium for what should be a cracking afternoon. They’re a big club and have some big Hollywood names backing them now so it’ll be interesting to see how their next chapter develops. We’ve had some really competitive games against them in recent years so we’re relishing the challenge in front of what will be another big crowd, and having that support from the terraces means so much to us. The message to the players at the moment is to keep nailing the basics in terms of our defensive work but to also really rouse ourselves and show resolve during those patches in games that aren’t quite going how we like. When confidence levels aren’t right up there, it’s about finding a way of getting that 0-0 or nicking a 1-0 win. Teams are paying us respect now and sometimes lining up with five at the back but we've still got to spend time on the ball and not be so rushed. We've got to encourage the players to be brave on the ball and to get back passing it because that's when we're at our best. We've got to show character and umph, make sure we win first and second balls and make sure disappointments on the pitch don’t get to us. We’re bound to get some flack after a few indifferent results but we just have to bounce back as we have done for many games and

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

many seasons. We've all got to remember that it is a long season and that we’ve got some great characters in the dressing room who really roll their sleeves up and thrive during the sticky patches. Today we’ve got to make the fans proud and we can do that first of all by playing with our usual high tempo which can be very daunting and intimidating for opponents when we really show our personalities and get key players on the ball to drive us forward. There hasn't been a need to redesign everything this week, we've had enough success to know that it works for us and that it works for the dynamics of our squad so it's just a case of not being overly complicated by scrambling people's brains with systematic massive changes. This is about looking people in the eye and saying we need more now, and I’m sure the lads will do it.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM It’s the FA Cup First Round today and it’s a competition we want to have a good run in. We’ve had tastes of it in the last couple of seasons but we want to keep progressing and make it further. We watched the draw and as players we do get those little excited type nerves as the numbers are pulled out of the hat. There’s that anticipation of who we’ll be facing and where that could take us. Wrexham at home will be a very tough tie but we’re excited about it. There’s a lot of glamour surrounding Wrexham at the moment, so it adds to what will be a great cup tie. We’ve played against them a few times in recent years in the National League, and every time we’ve played them, we’ve come out of the game knowing we’ve been in a proper physical match. The games at our place have always been tight and where they currently are in the National League, it’s probably not where they’d like to be but they’ve got a squad full of top quality players and I’m confident they’ll climb up the league as the season progresses. We’re going to try our best to have a special run in the competition. The magic of the cup means so much to supporters and it’s a competition which has been played for 150 years and is known all around the world. Year after year springs cup upsets and moments of pure euphoria for fans and players.

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Being at home is great for the Town supporters and I’m sure it’ll be a great atmosphere in both the home and away ends. Wrexham have a large following that’ll make the trip over from Wales which will add to the occasion. It should be a really competitive afternoon and one where we'll aim to come out on top and be in the hat for the Second Round. Enjoy the game!

Josh Falkingham and George Thomson, two footballers who joined Harrogate Town at the very start of the club’s full-time journey back in 2017. Since then, both have played key roles in Town’s success that includes two promotions and an FA Trophy victory. Now over four years on from when their love affair with Town began, both recently reached the milestone of 200 appearances for the club. We sat down and chatted to both midfielders to reflect on what has been a remarkable journey so far… By Henry Whitaker www.harrogatetownafc.com I

#ProudToBeTown

The first few days at Town… JF: On the first day I was nervous going into a new club and a new changing room but there was so much excitement as well. It was lucky that I knew Ben Parker, we travelled in together and he was someone who made me feel comfortable. I remember walking into the stadium and we all gathered in the hospitality suite and it was a busy room with a lot of trialists in there. GT: The club had just gone full time so there were a lot of new faces. I remember coming in on the first day after getting stuck on Wetherby Road for ages and thinking oh no, this is going to be every morning with this traffic. Everybody had gone into the hospitality suite and sat around the tables just getting to know each other as it was pretty much a brand new squad. We then got into preseason and went to Ripley Castle and stayed over for team bonding which was really good.

The competitive debut… JF: I had a really good preseason and I felt good. I remember we played against Leeds during that period which was brilliant for me, being a Leeds supporter. My debut was against Nuneaton and I remember it was a warm day and we ended up winning 4-0 which was an amazing start and what we needed being a new group. From the outside there were no expectations which helped, but that win was a catalyst and it gave us confidence to have a great season. GT: My debut was also against Nuneaton on the opening day of the season. I scored in the 4-0 win and it was the perfect start. The goal was a header from a corner that just landed on my head and I was about four yards out so I couldn’t really miss. I wasn’t nervous going into that game but I was for the first week of full-time training again because my body hadn’t been used to it for a while. It was also a brand new environment and initiations to look forward to but after that it was just excitement to get the season underway.

Reaching 200 appearances for Town… JF: I feel massively part of the club. It’s a really nice feeling knowing that there’s boys who started on the first day with me that are still here now and have made a bunch of appearances. To have played a part in the success makes it mean even more. We’ve got a handful of highlights to pick from and that’s the really positive thing for not just me but for the group. GT: I think it shows what kind of club Harrogate is. You feel valued and it’s a great place to come and work. If you ask anyone who’s been in the changing rooms over the last four seasons, everyone will say what a great group of lads it is. To reach 200 is just brilliant and hopefully I can get a few more.

The favourite goal for Town…

Milestone appearances… JF: 100 appearances came really quick for me and it was at Barrow away where we won 3-0. By the time I’d reached a century of appearances we’d already had two really successful seasons but it like I’d only been there a minute. I’d made it to 100 at a previous club Dunfermline so I know what it means but I always wanted to push on. I tried not to focus on the numbers too much as you can get caught up in it all so my attitude was just wanting more and more.

JF: It’s quite an obvious one for me. The goal at Wembley in the FA Trophy was so special. I haven’t scored as many as I’d have liked for this football club but if you’re ever going to score a goal, that’s the place to do it. For it to be the winning goal as well and then lift the trophy, I can look back and say that goal won us the cup final and that’s why it means so much. GT: The one that sticks out is Boston at home from my first season. Throughout that game their fans were behind the dugout on my side of the pitch and I was getting a bit of stick from them. A couple minutes later I chopped in on my left foot from a really weird angle and my shot flew straight into the top corner, if I’d missed I think would have got a lot of stick! There’s also been a few which have been late on in games; against Havant and then Dover away where we won 3-2 after being 2-1 down. And of course Wembley - to score there is something you dream about as a kid.

GT: It’s good to know you’ve accumulated a number of games with one club in such a short space of time as well. On a personal note, that’s always a good thing. It feels like you’re really part of something and I’ve never hit 150 anywhere before. It’s great because it does feel like you’re a part of something special. For both me and Falks, it’s our fifth season and it’s even better that the club has gone up two leagues and we’re still here so it shows that us as individuals have been able to improve and go in the same direction as the club.

after everything with Covid, it was a chance for the town to enjoy it with us. Fans, family, friends on a such a good day, it was incredible to see.

On being on this journey with the club… JF: What’s exciting is that once we’ve done one achievement, we’re then looking for the next. That’s how we work here and we’re desperate for more of those special feelings that we’ve experienced over the last few years. That is the overall message that I like to talk about; it’s not too much about what we’ve done or achieved although the club has come a long way, everyone knows that, but the management, the players and our style has been the exact same since day one. Inside the football club, nothing has changed. As players we’re continually striving to keep this momentum going and keep this football club progressing.

The favourite match in a Town shirt… JF: My favourite match is our first time at Wembley. The way we played and dominated the game, came back from a set back and the pressure associated with that, it just all added to the emotions afterwards. If I could play one match again it would be that. Being able to be a part of that game knowing how much it meant to not just me and my family but the manager, chairman and football club, there was so much time and effort put into it all. GT: Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s the promotion at Wembley. We’ve had the opportunity to go twice but the first one is still hard to put into words sometimes. I still watch the videos from that game when they come up on my phone, I just can’t scroll past them. It was just a day I’ll never ever forget. It was an unbelievable experience.

The favourite moment so far… JF: The party after the promotion win at Wembley. We had our partners there for what was a special memory that will live with us all forever. A few of us walked down to Wembley way at 4am and just sat back, had pictures and a laugh in front of the Wembley Arch. I did it all with people who I’d played with for 2,3,4 years so it was amazing. GT: I’d agree with Falks. The changing room after the win takes care of itself, it was just pure euphoria and everyone was top of the world. Then also that day in Harrogate with the bus parade, especially

14

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

GT: From where the club was with a couple hundred fans to winning two promotions and the FA Trophy, it’s amazing. This is also a team where many of the players have been here from the start. Fal, Woz, Lloyd, Falks, and then Mullers who joined a year after me, we’ve all achieved this together. At this club you wouldn’t be able to get away with being happy of where we’re at. We’ve had to improve, learn and develop our games to stick with the trajectory of the club so to have that core group of players still here shows the mentality of the group and the ability. This club is only going one way, we’re not satisfied we want to go further.

What’s next… JF: Promotion to League One is all I look at and all I want. There’s a hunger inside me that’ll never leave. I got told just over 10 years ago that I wasn’t good enough to play at that level, so my burning desire is to prove people wrong and ultimately get this football club into a place where I was told I wasn’t good enough to play. I want to keep playing week in, week out, working on my performance and how I can get the best out of myself and others. We’re in this league now because of what we’ve done but we want to progress again. GT: I want to keep trying to churn out appearances. I’m enjoying my football and enjoying league football even more so with fans this season. I want to play every game if I can and I’ll just keep trying to improve myself on and off the pitch. I don’t want to feel comfortable with where I’m at, I want to get better as a person and a player.

This season, however, hopes are high that Wrexham can end their 14 season hiatus from the EFL following the high-profile takeover by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021. Their ambition was no better displayed when Wrexham announced the headline signing of last season's League Two top scorer, Paul Mullin from Cambridge United over the Summer as well as the appointment of the hugely experienced Phil Parkinson as their new manager. Wrexham set up today's clash with victory over NPL Premier Division, Marine, in the fourth qualifying round, winning 2-0 in a replay after Jordan Davies' 95th-minute equaliser had rescued a 1-1 draw for the Red Dragons at Rossett Park.

New player-boss Ken Barnes guided Wrexham back to the Third Division at the first attempt in 1961/62. He introduced a new spirit and signed Ron Barnes from Rochdale, with Wrexham winning seven of their first nine games including a 5-0 demolition of Mansfield. Kevin Keelan arrived from Kidderminster in November and Wrexham remained among the leaders with a 12 match unbeaten run, securing five goal wins over Darlington and Chesterfield. They gained a record 10-1 victory over Hartlepools shortly before top scorer Wyn Davies moved to Bolton and finished in third position, also reaching the Welsh Cup final.

Brian Kinsey scored 27 goals as Wrexham won promotion under John Neal in 1969/70. New signings included Dave Gaskell and Bobby Park, with Wrexham storming to the top of the Fourth Division after losing just three of their opening 21 matches. They lost 2-0 at Manchester United in the League Cup third round and took the lead before losing 3-1 at Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round. Wrexham overcame a lean spell to end the campaign in fine style, beating Darlington 6-2 and hitting four goals past Workington and Bradford PA. They clinched the runners-up slot with a 3-0 victory at home to Northampton.

John Neal managed Wrexham to the FA Cup sixth round in 1973/74. They won their opening three Third Division matches but then went six games without a victory before trouncing Southend 5-1. Geoff Davies arrived from Chester and Arfon Griffiths grabbed a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Hereford, with Wrexham rising to fifth place by New Year after five successive wins. They beat Shrewsbury 1-0, Rotherham 3-0, Crystal Palace 2-0, Middlesbrough 1-0 and Southampton 1-0 in the FA Cup before losing 1-0 at Burnley in the sixth round. Wrexham lost only two of their last 12 games and finished fourth in the Third Division.

Wrexham reached the European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in 1975/76. John Neal's side had won the Welsh Cup the previous season and they defeated Swedish side Djurgardens 3-2 and Polish team Stal Rzeszow 3-1 in the European Cup Winners' Cup to earn a third round tie against leading Belgian side Anderlecht. They narrowly lost 1-0 in Brussels and were held to a 1-1 draw in the second-leg, losing 2-1 on aggregate to the eventual winners. Bill Ashcroft was leading marksman as Wrexham lost only three of their last 17 League matches and finished sixth in the Third Division, four points adrift of a promotion slot.

New player-manager Arfon Griffiths guided Wrexham to the Third Division title in 1977/78. Replacing John Neal in charge, he signed Dixie McNeil to replace Bill Ashcroft and also recruited Les Cartwright and Dai Davies. Wrexham won only one of their opening seven League games but soared to the top of the table with a 13 match unbeaten run, also reaching the League Cup fifth round before losing 3-1 to Liverpool and the FA Cup sixth round before losing 3-2 to Arsenal. Graham Whittle, Bobby Shinton and Dixie McNeil starred as Wrexham clinched promotion with a 7-1 win over Rotherham and also won the Welsh Cup.

1991/92

Wrexham made headlines with their epic FA Cup run of 1991/92. Brian Flynn's young side had finished bottom of the Football League the previous season and Mickey Thomas returned from Stoke, while Gordon Davies arrived from Fulham. They won only four of their opening 17 Fourth Division games but defeated Winsford 5-2 and Telford 1-0 in the FA Cup before goals by Mickey Thomas and Steve Watkin clinched a sensational 2-1 third round win at home to champions Arsenal. Despite not having won an away League match for 15 months, Wrexham drew 2-2 at West Ham in the fourth round before losing 1-0 in the replay.

Steve Watkin and Gary Bennett scored 34 goals between them as Wrexham won promotion in 1992/93. Brian Flynn's side kicked off with a 3-1 victory at home to Rochdale and Gary Bennett netted a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Bury. Mike Lake was signed from Sheffield United in November and Wrexham soared into the promotion frame with six straight victories including a thrilling 5-4 win over Chesterfield. Karl Connelly and Barry Jones were ever-present as they finished runners-up after losing just two of their last 19 matches, including a 2-0 defeat by rivals Cardiff in the top of the table clash at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham regained Second Division status at the first attempt under Denis Smith in 2002/03. Newcomers included Andy Dibble from Stockport and Paul Edwards from Swindon, with Wrexham unbeaten in their first four games. Andy Morrell starred as they won 4-0 at home to both Swansea and Exeter, maintaining their promotion challenge with four wins in five matches. Scott Green arrived from Wigan and made a huge contribution as Wrexham ended the season with eight successive wins, trouncing Carlisle 6-1 and Cambridge 5-0, to clinch promotion in third place. Andy Morrell top-scored with 34 goals.

1992/93

Brian Carey from Leicester and Wrexham were among the early leaders after losing just one of their opening 17 Second Division matches, drawing 4-4 at home to Plymouth. They defeated Colwyn Bay 2-0, Scunthorpe 3-2, West Ham 1-0, Peterborough 4-2 and Birmingham 3-1 in the FA Cup before losing 1-0 to fellow giantkillers Chesterfield in the sixth round. Gary Bennett returned from Preston in February but Wrexham finished four points adrift of the play-off places after winning only three times in 17 matches.

2012/13

Wrexham were FA Trophy winners and Conference National play-off finalists in 2012/13, their first two appearances at Wembley Stadium in the club's 150-year history. Wrexham beat Rushall Olympic 5-0, Solihull Moors 3-2, Sutton United 5-0, Southport 3-1 and Gainsborough Trinity 4-3 in the FA Trophy before defeating Grimsby Town 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final. Andy Morrell’s side qualified for the Conference National play-offs in fifth place and overcame Kidderminster Harriers 5-2 on aggregate in the semifinals. They lost 2-0 to Newport County in the first play-off final to feature two Welsh teams.

Mickey Thomas equalises in the 82nd-minute in Wrexham's famous 2-1 FA Cup Third Round win over Arsenal in 1992 - Steve Watkin grabbing the winner two minutes later.

Today's FA Cup clash is the eighth meeting between the two sides. Our first ever meeting was in the First Round of the FA Trophy in 2017 and National League North, Town returned from the Racecourse Ground with a creditable 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from former Wrexham striker Mark Beck. That season Town went on to reach the last 16 of the FA Trophy for the first time. In our first season in the National League's top division in 2018/19, the sides met four times twice in the league and twice in the FA Cup.

The teams met at the Racecourse for the return league fixture on the last day of the 2018/19 season with both teams already guaranteed a play-off place. The game finished 2-1 to Wrexham with Jason Oswell and Nicky Deverdics scoring for the Dragons and Mark Beck for Town.

The first ever league meeting took place at Wetherby Road on Tuesday 25 September 2018 and drew a crowd of 2,387 with 717 making the trip across from North Wales. The game ended 0-0.

The following season, the first league encounter took place at the Racecourse Ground in October in front of 3,435 spectators when a late 80th minute strike from Ryan Fallowfield cancelled out Bobby Grant's early opener in a 1-1 draw.

The two FA Cup fourth qualifying round games followed, one on Saturday 20 October, resulting in another 0-0 draw. The replay took place three days later at the Racecourse, Wrexham winning 2-0 with second half goals from Akil Wright and Luke Young. The defeat was just Town's second in 18 games and their first in nine away fixtures.

The last time the two teams met was in January 2020 when Wrexham ended second-placed Town's five-match winning run in the National League with an impressive win at a packed Wetherby Road. James Jennings' stunning 25-yard free-kick gave Wrexham the lead before JJ Hooper scored late on to seal the win for Dean Keates' side.

ACADEMY

ACADEMY

Introducing the next generation of Town stars...

James Birmingham What first made you get involved with Town? After getting told I wasn’t getting a scholarship at a different club, I heard about the Harrogate Town trials from my dad and jumped at the opportunity to go. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? My strengths are good first touch, good left foot and good accelaration. How do you think your game has developed whilst at Town? I feel that my game has already developed since being at Town - the key parts being looking forward more often and trying to make more positive decisions. As well as this, my crosses are beginning to get a lot better and I have been getting more consistent with my set piece delivery. 26

TOWN LADIES WIN IN THEIR BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON SO FAR

TOWN LADIES 2-0 SUNDERLAND WEST END report by Carey Huegett

Town secured all three points after a 2-0 win over Sunderland West End in arguably the best footballing performance of the season so far. It took fifteen minutes for Town to find their rhythm and deal with the visitors physicality. An injury to Em Crispin forced an early substitution and a re-shuffle with Beth Jennings coming off the bench to add composure in the midfield and to make things happen going forward. Within seconds she released Nat Eustance in on goal only for her to be denied by a last ditch tackle. Town continued to step up the intensity and dominate the play - not allowing Sunderland out of their own half. Nat Eustance, Beth Jennings and Grace Adams all went close to opening the

scoring from outside the box whilst Teagan Sorokan headed wide from close range. Cassidy Lane then delivered a fantastic ball across the face of goal only for the ball to be cleared off the line. Despite dominating the play, Town went in at half time 0-0. After half time, Town picked up where they left off. Beth Jennings hit the bar and Shannon Beal flicked the ball onto the post. The deadlock was finally broken when Nat Eustance scored a trademark worldie, assisted by Holly Sornat. Nat’s fast feet bought her a yard of space, enabling her to smash home a long range screamer from 30 yards that flew in off the underside of the bar to make it 1-0 Town. Town continued to play some sublime one and two touch

football which West End couldn’t cope with. Without doubt, the most aesthetically pleasing and composed football that Town have produced in the league campaign to date. Beth Jennings grabbed a welldeserved goal late on to cap a player of the match performance and secure all three points for Town, rifling a 25 yard left foot effort into the top corner. Nat Eustance

Fresh from opening the scoring with a signature 'worldie' in last week's win over Sunderland West End, we get to know Town winger Nat Eustance a little bit better... Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I began playing football at the age of five for Killinghall Nomads boys’ team and played there till I was 11 before moving to North Yorkshire Girls Centre of Excellence where I played for six seasons. During this time, I also trained at FDS Harrogate. Prior to Town I have also played for Harrogate Railway under 18s, York City Ladies and Loughborough University. I initially joined Town during the team’s first season playing pre-season and sometimes travelling back from University for matches. I re-joined the club last season. What are your personal goals for the season? I wanted to start playing again after a couple of seasons out. I knew the club had a great set up, was ambitious and had a strong team - being local was a bonus. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? Dribbling, skills, passing, vision and sometimes shooting. What are your goals for Town? To get promoted and to climb as high up the leagues as we can. What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Liverpool - I loved their squad when I was younger and used to watch them on a weekend at my friend’s house. My current favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo as I love how he uses skill in the game. Besides his technical ability, I love his passion, determination and leadership

32

qualities. Ronaldinho would be my favourite player of all time due to his technical ability and skill; he is extremely entertaining to watch - how football should be played! What is the best thing about being involved with Town? The team and the atmosphere at training and games. Also, the high standards and quality of the players and coaches.
