THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER After a couple of trips away from the EnviroVent Stadium, we’re back home and ready to face Salford City who we’ve had our battles against in the National League North, National League and most recently League Two. Ourselves and Salford have been on similar journeys, albeit doing it in slightly different ways, and we’ll be looking to get our first Football League victory against them today. We come into the contest confident after a 3-1 win against Walsall last Saturday. We were just delighted with the performance and I thought it was one of our most mature performances since going into the Football League. We conserved energy when we needed to and dropped back into shape. Everybody played their part, did the legwork, did the extra five yards and it made sure that we were solid throughout the game. We then spring-boarded it into attack and were ruthless in front of goal which was great to see. We showed tremendous character and I think because the group is so honest, you can tell them the truth. We were hurting after conceding four to Sheffield Wednesday in the Papa John’s Trophy but a lot was taken on board and the lads faced up to it, worked hard in training and then came out fighting and put in an absolutely fantastic performance.
were brilliant and all across the back four the communication levels were really good and they saw the danger throughout. Now it's all about building momentum. The lads have steered the ship into a better situation after going through an inconsistent patch, so it gives us confidence by performing like that that we can get more consistent results moving forward. Enjoy the game!
Simon
We were so keen on getting a clean sheet against Walsall but I think with that one goal going in, it'll just add to the hunger and appetite to get the clean sheet going forward. We defended well though, the two centre halves

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM We’ve been involved in three different competitions since my last notes as the games keep coming thick and fast.
First up was our FA Cup tie against Wrexham and it’s a competition we want to progress far in. It was a tough game against the and exactly what we expected from them in that they’d come and make it difficult for us. We had to work hard to get the win and get through to the second round but the main thing for us in any cup game is the result and as much as we weren’t at our fluid best in the first half, it was a very good sign for us after the break that we have that ability to show some grit in front of our own fans and come from behind. We ran out deserving winners, especially with that final 30 minutes which was really strong. We’ve got Portsmouth in the next round and it was probably the toughest tie we could have got, but it’s a really good opportunity to test ourselves against higher league opposition. We’ll be playing in a stadium with a really strong crowd against a side with so much history in this competition. We came up against them at our place a couple of years ago in the FA Cup and we'll go down there and try and get another good result to put ourselves in the hat again. What followed after the win against Wrexham was a trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Papa John’s Trophy. The result was something none of us were happy with and it wasn’t a nice feeling walking off the pitch and into the dressing room at the full-time whistle. It felt quite a strange game as going forward we moved the ball really well and looked dangerous, so to concede four and hit nothing in reply really hurt. We were desperate to put things right after that and maybe people were questioning our strength of characters, but it’s all about responding well
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
and I thought we did that brilliantly against Walsall last Saturday. After suffering what could have been a damaging defeat with the score line against Sheffield Wednesday, we came out fighting again and the character shown was the most pleasing thing about the result. We’re now coming into a really important couple of months of the season and we’ll be looking to work hard throughout it, beginning today against what will be really tough opposition in Salford. They’re a side I’m yet to taste victory against, so I’ll be doing everything I can to change that. Both clubs have been on similar journeys in the last few years having both been together in the National League North to now fighting it out in the Football League. The games against them have always been tight affairs but unfortunately we’ve found ourselves on the wrong side of the results, so we'll be looking to put in a strong performance today, backed by the confidence from last weekend’s win.

PLAYER IN FOCUS
NATHAN SHERON
Nathan Sheron, Harrogate Town’s no-nonsense defender who wears his heart on his sleeve and loves a good old-fashioned tackle. From spending 10 years with Liverpool FC’s academy to becoming Fleetwood Town’s first-ever youth team player to come through the academy and feature for the first team, this is the story of Sheron’s journey to Harrogate Town. By Henry Whitaker Born and raised in St Helens, Merseyside a town known more for rugby league than football - Sheron had a ball at his feet from as early as he can remember. He’d play in the garden with his older brother, and in the park behind his house with whoever was there wanting a kick about.

Being the nephew of Mike Sheron - a former Premier League striker who made just under 500 appearances for clubs including Manchester City, Norwich City and Blackpool - Nathan Sheron had the footballing gene in his DNA and at the age of just seven, joined Liverpool FC’s academy following trials through his school. As a Liverpool fan, it was already a dream come true for a young Nathan Sheron, and the defender recalls the first few years being all about enjoying football and learning the fundamentals. “I remember going down to Kirby with one of my mates for trials. He was dangling off the
#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com
goal post and I was running laps around the goal as at that age I was a fast little forward,” Sheron says. “I just enjoyed playing during the early years. There wasn’t any pressure from my parents, they just said go and enjoy it.” As Sheron reached his teenage years, things began to gather pace as he and his teammates were now missing days of school to train at Kirby. He’d be mingling with the likes of Ryan Kent, Harry Wilson, and Trent Alexander Arnold - all who have gone onto play in the Premier League - and it was a lifestyle any young aspiring footballer would love. For Sheron, there was never a doubt in his mind that he wanted to become a professional footballer. “My parents were keen for me to get my schoolwork done as I was academically bright and they didn’t want football to stop that,” he explains. “I’d come back at 8pm and go straight to my room to do homework but there was never a second thought in my mind about becoming a professional footballer, football is what I wanted and it was that or nothing.”

For the boyhood Liverpool fan who had been at the club for 10 years, it was a day to forget.
At a club like Liverpool where the hunt for silverware and success is enormous, new players come through the door each season and that doesn’t stop at the first team. By the time Sheron had turned 16, he was beginning to see more players joining the academy team from other clubs in the country and abroad, signing for big fees. The likes Sergi Canos - who’s now at Brentford - was just one of many who made the task of breaking into the first team for the local academy boys so much harder. “It made it hard as you were pushing yourself to do better only to then see a new guy come in for a big fee in front of you, it wasn’t nice,” Sheron admits. “It was the ‘oh no not another one’ feeling each time a new signing came in but most of the time you’d be able to fight them off as mentally we were just stronger than them. The older you got though the higher the quality of players you start to find yourself around and you begin to fall off a bit. It’s so hard to keep up with, it was a ruthless environment,” he continues. “As soon as you were out the team, they weren’t really interested in you.” Nonetheless, at 16, Sheron signed a two-year youth team scholarship with Liverpool and was looking forward to getting his professional career started. However, just a couple of months into his contract, Sheron and his dad were called in for a meeting by at the time academy coach Neil Critchley, who informed Sheron’s dad that they didn’t see a future for the youngster at Liverpool and that instead, it would be best for him to move onto another club.
16
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
“Liverpool are a massive club and you can understand why all the signings keep coming in but you do feel after being there for 10 years you’ve been put aside, it wasn’t nice,” Sheron says. “I’d just moved into fulltime football, something I dreamed of since being a little kid but I just couldn’t get a game in the youth team. The coaching staff said I could see out my scholarship or look for a move elsewhere which is what I did and the best thing I could have done.” Sheron went on trial with the likes of Sheffield United, Wigan and Shrewsbury but Fleetwood Town is where he signed. He lived in digs with his new teammates and found the experience to be completely different to life at Kirby. From having everything put on a plate for him at Liverpool with the best facilities you could imagine, at Fleetwood, it was a case of training at an old rugby ground, helping to complete all the jobs in the rain and snow after each session. It was something that Sheron loved. “Those jobs kept me grounded and helped me become a man, it put that respect into you,” Sheron explains. "I just wanted to get playing, it was simple as that. I’d missed just playing every Saturday like I did as a kid and at Fleetwood, I was playing three times a week and I just got the enjoyment back. Being a Liverpool fan, I could have stayed at the club and taken the easy option, which some lads do as they like the tag of playing for Liverpool and that lifestyle. Lewis Travis was in the same boat as me and he’s now playing week in, week out for Blackburn. Leaving the club got us into the real world and exposed us to men's football.” When Sheron’s youth team contract ended, he signed a professional contract with Fleetwood Town, along with just one other player from the academy. With Fleetwood not having an under 23s side, Sheron was sent out on loan to Chorley FC in

November 2016 for a month before then stepping up to the National League on loan with Chester and then Southport. The youngster was getting a real taste of men’s football at an early age but it was something he was embracing and thriving on. “Chorley was my first experience of men’s football as I was going into the changing rooms with fully grown men, big brutes,” Sheron chuckles. “You can go one way or the other but I loved it. The environment was brilliant and the management was all perfect for me for a first loan. Gainsborough Trinity was my first match and it was a horrible afternoon where we really had to ground out for the win, but I loved it and from then on that was what football was about for me, rolling the sleeves up and getting stuck in.” Sheron made his senior debut for Fleetwood on 8 November 2017, in an EFL Trophy match against Carlisle United and in doing so, became the first graduate of Fleetwood's Academy to play for the first team. He would then go on to feature two more times for the Cod Army that season while Uwe Rosler was manager.
Two months later and two days before his 21st birthday, the versatile player made his first league start but it came at centre back coming up against Wycombe Wanderers and striker Adebayo Akinfenwa. It was a match that Sheron described as an “eye-opening” debut. Nonetheless, Sheron held his own and was now a key man in Barton’s team, filling in at right-back, centre back and central midfield. He went on to make 26 appearances that season which included a derby day victory over rivals Blackpool. It looked like Sheron had now turned the corner and was set to establish himself as a Football League player but come the start of the 2019/20 season, things began to unravel. Barton had signed a bunch of new players including Paul Coutts and Jordan Rossiter as the Cod Army looked to push for promotion into the Championship. It meant Sheron quickly slipped down the pecking order.
At the start of the next season, however, it was not Rosler in charge of Fleetwood but instead former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton.
By January, the St Helens born man hadn’t made a single league appearance and was so allowed to join Walsall on loan for what was an “opportunity to just play games”. Sheron featured eight times for the Saddlers before Covid brought the season to a premature end.
Barton - originally from Merseyside himself - took a liking to Sheron’s aggressive style of play and saw him as the ideal holding midfielder in his side, a position Sheron had not played before.
Sheron then asked Fleetwood if he could return to the Lancashire side to train as they prepared for the playoffs but when they said no, Sheron knew his time with the club was nearing an end.
“It was a shock when Joey came to Fleetwood,” Sheron says. “You’d seen his reputation as a player but we had no idea what he’d be like. I’d been a defender all my career so far but some said I was too small to be one. In the first game of preseason against Salford, I played the final half-hour in midfield and within five minutes I’d bust my head open. He (Barton) loved that though as maybe he saw a bit of my playing style in him.”
“It was a kick in the teeth as I’d experienced first-
After continuing to impress the Fleetwood boss throughout preseason, Sheron soon made his league debut for the Cod Army, featuring for 20 minutes against Oxford United on matchday two of the campaign.

team football and got a taste for it. I understood the club wanted to kick on but it just shows how ruthless football is,” he confesses. “During the Covid period, there were lots of Zoom sessions and running around the blocks for me. That wasn’t great as I knew my time at Fleetwood was pretty much done.” Now into the 2020/21 season, Sheron was on the lookout for a loan move and it soon came with the opportunity to move up to Scotland and join St Mirren on a season-long loan. He was told by manager Jim Goodwin that he was after a defensive midfielder who would “head and kick everything”, something Sheron proudly admits he’s quite good at. The midfielder featured against Rangers managed by Steven Gerrard who Sheron briefly trained with during the 2013/14 season - but after a few results that didn’t go The Buddies way, Sheron was out the side and now living in Scotland during a pandemic with nothing to do other than turn up for training. He asked if he could go back to Fleetwood but the club were strapped for cash and so Sheron was stuck in Scotland until Barton got the sack in January 2021. The interim manager recalled Sheron to see what he could offer but when Simon Grayson was appointed soon after, Sheron was once again frozen out of the side. “I was buzzing to be back as they had a few injuries and I thought it was a chance to play but Simon Grayson comes in and just had no interest
18

in me at all,” Sheron recalls. “That again was a knockback which was hard to take as I was back home ready to take the chance but never got it. It gave me more determination to play though,” he adds. “I asked Grayson to go out on loan but he said he wanted me as cover for injuries but I was tired of hearing the politics and b*****t.” Sheron’s contract expired in the summer and for the first time in his career, he was without a club. His agent told him that several clubs were interested in taking the Merseyside man on, but nothing concrete came his way until he trialed with Harrogate Town at the start of July. He quickly impressed manager Simon Weaver with his attitude and work rate, as well as being able to fill several positions on the pitch, and after featuring a few times during preseason, Sheron signed a permanent deal with Harrogate Town. “During the trial I just loved the environment,” Sheron expresses. There’s trust in me and with the atmosphere of the lads, it’s what you want as a player. I just wanted to get the contract signed and sealed as injury or the unknown could have ruined that.” Sheron continues, “In the past, the honesty has been lacking or coaches have said things just to keep you quiet but here with the conversations I’ve had with the Gaffer, it feels genuine and I’ve just got to keep my head down and take the chance each time it comes.” So far this season, the 24-year-old has featured half a dozen times and impressed in Town’s last outing, a 3-1 away win against one of his former clubs Walsall. The next step for Sheron will be to cement his place in the starting XI and help the team build momentum as we edge closer to the halfway point of the season. “I just want to play as many games as possible and enjoy myself,” Sheron says in his final comments. “I want to be part of something and hopefully, that can happen this year. This is a great group to be a part of and we’re all pushing in the same direction, which is so important. We had a great result last weekend and the aim now is to keep building that momentum and achieve something special.”

Gary Bowyer joined Salford as caretaker manager in March from Derby, where he was the U23 assistant manager and secured 20 points from 11 games, leaving Salford just two points shy of a play-off place. After initially looking like he would return to Pride Park to resume his duties with the U23s, Bowyer was allowed to leave the Rams and put pen to paper on a two year deal with the Ammies. After a playing career at Hereford United, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United was cut short through injury, Bowyer went into coaching, joining Blackburn Rovers in 2004 to take charge of their U18s. Following six seasons with the Academy, Bowyer took charge of the club's Reserve team, before two spells as caretaker manager of the senior side and getting the job permanently in May 2013. After two seasons at Blackburn, he became Blackpool boss in June 2016 guiding the Seasiders to promotion in his first season in charge, before departing after 115 games at the helm. He then joined Bradford City in April 2019 where he spent 11 months in charge.

The Ammies trounced Bacup Borough 7-1 in the second round tie that was postponed three times and switched to Salford, then beat Glossop NE 5-2 in the third round replay after a 2-2 draw. They won 2-1 at Ramsbottom United, then overcame a first-leg deficit to beat Oldham Town 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final. Shaun Whitehead skippered Salford to a 3-2 victory over Cammell Laird in the final. The Ammies finished fifth in the North West Counties First Division, winning 23 of their 42 games and gaining 79 points. Striker Jon Robinson was leading marksman and ‘Player of the Year’.

2014-15
Salford City went close to winning promotion with virtually an all local squad in 2006-07. The Ammies began with a 3-1 defeat at home to Curzon Ashton but soared up the North West Counties First Division with only two defeats in their next 26 games. They gained seven straight wins and beat local rivals FC United 2-1 in front of 4,058 at Moor Lane in early October. FC United avenged that defeat by beating Salford 3-2 in the FA Vase second round watched by a 2,799 crowd and triumphed 4-2 in the penultimate match. Jon Robinson was leading scorer with 21 goals as Salford finished fourth after winning 26 of their 42 games, gaining 87 points.
Salford City were promoted as North West Counties League runners-up in 2007-08. Gary Fellows’ side lost just one of their first 13 matches, 1-0 at home to eventual champions Flixton, slamming five goals past Congleton, Squires Gate and St Helens Town. Skippered by Shaun Whitehead, the Ammies remained in contention despite losing three times in four games in February and were unbeaten in their final 11 matches. They won 26 of their 38 games, scoring 75 goals and gaining 84 points as they ended 25 years in the North West Counties League. Jon Robinson and Tommy Turner were joint top scorers, while Kenny Tudor was ‘Player of the Year’.

Salford City pulled off a thrilling ‘Great Escape’ to avoid relegation in 2008-09. The Ammies lost six of their opening seven matches in the Northern Premier League and Ashley Berry replaced Gary Fellows as manager in October 2008. Results failed to improve and by the time Paul Wright took charge, Salford were languishing at the bottom, having achieved just one win and gained eight points from their first 26 games, leaving them 15 points adrift of safety. An unlikely 5-3 win at Lancaster sparked a remarkable upturn, with Salford gaining nine wins and a draw from their last 14 games and clinching survival on the final day with a 5-2 win at Garforth.
Salford City won the Northern Premier League First Division (North) title in 2014-15. Under the new ownership of ‘The Class of 92’, Salford were unbeaten in their first 13 games but then displaced as leaders by Darlington after just four wins in 11 matches. Phil Power was sacked in January and replaced by joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley. Salford went on to win 15 of their remaining 17 matches of the season and celebrated the championship with a 5-0 victory over Ossett Town, their ninth consecutive win. Gareth Seddon was top scorer with 24 goals as the Ammies won 30 of their 42 games, scoring 92 goals and gaining 95 points.

2016-17
2015-16 Salford City won promotion and had their best-ever FA Cup run in 2015-16. The club was featured in the BBC One series ‘Class of 92: Out of Their League’ in October 2015. Salford defeated Whitby Town, Curzon Ashton, Bradford PA and Southport to reach the FA Cup first round proper for the first time. They beat Notts County 2-0 at Moor Lane in a live televised game, then drew 1-1 with Hartlepool before losing in the second round replay. The Ammies qualified for the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs in third place, beating Ashton United 3-1 in the semis, then Workington 3-2 in the final. Danny Webber was top scorer with 16 goals.
Salford City qualified for the Conference North play-offs in 2016-17. The Ammies gained a thrilling 3-3 draw at eventual champions AFC Fylde in August and stormed to their biggest victory of the season, 5-0, in the return match at Moor Lane in February. Salford also slammed five goals against promotion rivals Darlington. Their solitary home defeat was 2-1 against Tamworth. Managed by Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley, they won 22 of their 42 games and finished in fourth position with 77 points. Mike Phenix was top scorer with 15 goals. Salford were unlucky to lose on penalties after a 2-2 draw on aggregate with Halifax in the play-off semi-final.
2017-18
Salford City won the Conference North title in 2017-18. The newlynamed Peninsula Stadium was unveiled by Sir Alex Ferguson in October. Salford gained a thrilling 4-4 draw at Kidderminster Harriers, also scoring four goals at home to North Ferriby and Blyth Spartans. The Ammies clinched the title with one match left to
play, winning 28 of their 42 games and gaining 91 points, finishing six ahead of runners-up Harrogate. Jack Redshaw was leading marksman with 17 goals as they won promotion to the Conference National for the first time in their history. Joint-managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley resigned shortly after the end of the season.
2018-19
Salford City won the Conference National play-off final in 201819. The Ammies remained in contention for the title throughout the season under new manager Graham Alexander, beating Wrexham 2-0 in front of a record 4,044 attendance on New Year’s Day, but automatic promotion hopes suffered a serious blow with a 1-0 defeat at home to fellow high-fliers AFC Fylde. Salford finished third after winning 25 of their 46 games and gaining 85 points. They beat Eastleigh 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the play-off semi-finals, then gained a 3-0 victory over AFC Fylde in the Wembley final to secure promotion to the Football League for the first time.

Today's league fixture is the eleventh meeting between the two sides. Our first ever meeting was in November 2016 in the National League North when the sides played out a goaless draw at Moor Lane. That season, the sides were also drawn against each other in the FA Trophy with Town progressing to the first round proper after an impressive 3-0 win in a replay at Moor Lane thanks to goals from Joe Leesley, Joe Colbeck and Andy Thanoj after a 2-2 draw at Wetherby Road. The return league fixture in April 2017 ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Simon Ainge bagging a hattrick of penalties in the last 10 minutes for Town to earn a share of the points. Sam Walker and John Johnston had put the Ammies in control before the crazy closing stages in which Nick Haughton also grabbed Salford's third.
Simon Ainge scores the first of his three penalties in the 3-3 draw in 2017
Whitehead cancelled out Jack Muldoon's opener and then Adam Rooney again equalised after Liam Kitching had put Town ahead. Rory Gaffney's 57-minute strike won it for Salford. In the return fixture at Wetherby Road in March 2019, Devonte Redmonds penalty was enough to win it for the Ammies 1-0. Last season, when Town joined Salford in League Two for the first time, the Ammies travelled to the EnviroVent Stadium in mid-December and returned home with the points courtesy of James Wilson's 17th-minute strike. In the return game at the Peninsula Stadium in January, Town struck in added time to claim a dramatic 2-2 draw. The hosts were on course to move second in League Two when they retook the lead with 20 minutes left through substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante, but Ed Francis pounced in the third minute of stoppage time to secure Town a point. Leeds loanee Robbie Gotts gave the Ammies the lead after 21 minutes but Town responded superbly and equalised eight minutes before the interval through Jack Muldoon.
Over the next two seasons, Salford got the better of Town, winning all four league encounters. In 2017/18 in the National League North when both teams battled for the top two places, Salford won both fixtures 2-1 - the first at Wetherby Road in September 2017 when Lois Maynard scored the winner in the 77th minute Ed Francis celebrates after grabbing a late equaliser to earn Town a share after Joe Leesley's penalty had of the points at Salford last season. cancelled out Mike Phenix's early strike. At Moor Lane in January 2018, Mike Phenix and Tom Walker gave Salford a 2-0 first half lead before Dominic Knowles replied in the 63rd minute however Town were unable to find an equaliser. Both teams ended up being promoted to the National League at the end of that season. In their first seasons in the National League's top division in 2018/19, Salford again did the double over Town - the first game at Moor Lane finishing 3-2. Town lead twice however Danny

CREWE ALEXANDRA
5-3 HARROGATE TOWN
AFTER EXTRA TIME (2-2 AFTER 90 MINS)
On Saturday the Academy played against Crewe Alexandra at the Mornflake Stadium in the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup. Crewe are an established Cat 2 Academy, so were overwhelming favourites to progress to the Third Round. The Harrogate lads, however, started the game on the front foot taking the lead in the 13th-minute after great work from Finn O'Boyle allowed Joe Dixon to finish smartly. Crewe equalised in the 37th-minute through Joel Tabiner with a well driven finish after a continued 15 minute spell of pressure to send the teams in level at half time. Just four minutes after the restart, the Alex took the lead as the Town defence failed to push out and left Crewe's captain Connor O'Riordan to smash the ball into the roof of the net from ten yards. To their credit the Harrogate Town heads didn't drop but instead continued to take the game to their hosts and their endeavours were rewarded with an equaliser after a fantastic break from George Horbury who fed the ball to Joe Dixon to score his second of the game with another cool finish. It remained 2-2 after 90 minutes which sent the game into 30 minutes of extra time and much more excitement! Six minutes into extra time Crewe regained the lead courtesy of a fantastic 25 yard strike from
30 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Charlie Finney, but again the Town lads continued to work hard and their 'never say die' attitude led to substitute, Emmanuel Ilesnami, scoring a fantastic goal to level things up again at 3-3 two minutes later. Crewe took the lead for the third time on 99 minutes from an in-swinging corner which Zak KempsterDown finished at the far post. Unfortunately, Crewe scored another in the dying seconds of extra time through Connor Salisbury to make it 5-3 which was a little unfair on the Town lads who produced a heroic performance as underdogs but will take a huge amount from the experience. Academy manager Paul Stansfield commented: “The entire squad were a credit to the club and demonstrated all the values Simon instils in all players who represent the club. We worked tremendously hard and showed high levels of quality at times in the game. This performance should give them a lot of confidence going into our forthcoming fixtures.” Town: Giles, J. Wakefield Trinity Ladies sat in second place having played one more game than Harrogate Town before the game kicked off. The game was always set to be a tasty affair with the two Yorkshire teams going head to head. Town started brightly with new signing Hannah Campbell providing a constant threat to the Trinity defence, along with Cassidy Lane and Becky Wilson putting in dangerous crosses from wide areas. Town had to contend with the weather conditions and were caught out on a couple of occasions as the defence misjudged the ball over the top as a result of the high winds. Trinity’s number 9 came close twice and looked like their only threat but the crossbar and goalkeeper Carrie Simpson was on hand to prevent her scoring.

Beth Jennings had a goal ruled out for offside as she tapped in from a brilliant Campbell cross. Eustance then came close with an effort that narrowly went over the bar. Town started to play some good football and pin Trinity back but couldn’t break the deadlock. Trinity opened the scoring after a high ball into the box saw Heckler nod the ball home to put the home side in front just before half time. Town came out after the break and showed their true quality. They played free-flowing, attacking football and pinned Trinity back. Charlotte Broad made a huge impact off the bench and Town created chance after chance but were struggling to find the all-important goal. That was until some intricate football around the edge area released Hannah Campbell who then

squared it to Nat Eustance who rifled the ball into the roof of the net to put Town level. Town then went up a gear and were so close to finding several goals in quick succession, but a couple of goal line clearances and the Trinity keeper kept it level. GETTING TO KNOW...
Lindsey Whitton Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I started playing at Frome Collegians when I was about six, then progressed to Frome Town's women's team and the Somerset Centre of Excellence. I then played at the Birmingham Uni for 3 years whilst studying. After I graduated, I played at West Brom before moving to Yorkshire and playing for Leeds United. Unfortunately, at the time, the club disbanded the women’s team, so I moved to Guiseley. After two seasons there, I fell out of love with football and quit playing for a year. Then I found Town and the rest is history! What do you consider are the strengths of your game? My work ethic, communication, strength and pace. If you had to compare yourself to a player, who would it be? I don’t like to compare myself to others as such, but look more at attributes of centre backs and see how I can add their strengths to my own game. I remember watching Van Dyke when he was at Southampton and loved how he received the ball and drove forward into space, so you’ll often catch me running forward when the time is right. I also love watching Ruben Dias at City as he provides such stability to their defence and shows the impact a calm and composed defence can have on the whole team. What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? That I want to win, do the team proud and just work my hardest. You can’t ask for anything more than that.
36
What are your personal goals for the season? To keep as many clean sheets as possible! If the opposition don’t score, they can’t win. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? The people - they’re a such a great bunch. Best game so far? Why? Our first game this season against Farsley. It was so important for us to get 3 points. It was 2-1 at half time so it was vital that we kept our heads and continued playing the way we had in the first half. Farsley put up a fight, but we kept calm, responded well under the pressure, kept to our core values and came out with a 3-2 win. I think that performance really reflected the journey we had been on over the summer.

sock, take 3 steps back then 2 to the left. I don’t feel prepared unless I've gone through that! Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My sister. I look up to her a lot, she also plays football and has the most incredible work ethic and determination to succeed. She’s always really positive about things and extremely resilient so I always go to her when I need a little pep talk. Your motto in life? Be grateful and enjoy the little things.
Proudest moment so far? Whenever I wear the captain’s armband. It’s a real privilege and one I never take for granted. What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? It couldn’t be anyone else but Harrogate Town could it? I think Josh Falkingham is great, he’s taken that squad from strength to strength. His passion and enthusiasm is undeniable and his work ethic on the pitch is insane. Do you have any rituals? Before I take a freekick I have to go through a set a movements – adjust my right shin pad then left shin pad, adjust my right sock then left

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I 45
Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
