THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER

Good evening and welcome back to the EnviroVent. It’s been 17 days since our last home game, with trips to Swindon, Carlisle and Portsmouth meaning we’ve certainly racked up the miles recently! However, what a positive and inspiring couple of weeks it’s been. It started up in Carlisle which is a very tough place to go but the lads were tremendous and really battled hard for the three points. It was so pleasing to get the clean sheet as well, which would have done wonders for the confidence levels throughout the team. Carlisle threw everything at us but we held strong and did what we needed to shut them out.

those games. The support is outstanding and I can’t say enough how much we all appreciate it. The late winner against Portsmouth was what you deserved and I hope you all enjoyed the journey back to Harrogate as much as we did!

The following Saturday saw us face Swindon Town, a very talented football team who have a clear identity and way of playing. We thought the best way to nullify their threats was to really press high and try and nick possession at every opportunity and the lads executed the plan superbly and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. In the second half we knew Swindon would come at us and that it was going to be a big test, but to be on the receiving end of, in my opinion, a very harsh penalty decision five minutes from full time was a bitter pill to swallow, but we could take so many positives from the performance and four points out of six was a great return.

We’re reaching new levels and although every player deserves a lot of credit for that Portsmouth performance, there are players who have been at this club for years and they just keep getting better and better. That, with the dynamic ingredients of the new players makes us an exciting proposition when we’re on it. The squad has been depleted in recent weeks due to injuries, and on saturday, we only had three outfield players on the bench but it’s not something we’ve wanted to moan about; we’ve just got on with it. To come away with such positive results from the last three matches says so much about this group of players and it’s a privilege to be a part of a management team for these lads.

Attention then turned to the FA Cup Second Round on Saturday, knowing a win would send us into the Third Round for the first time in our history. To make that a reality was a fantastic feeling and a high which is hard to put into words. We showed such promise throughout the game with our high intensity and willingness to pass the ball against a Portsmouth team who were unbeaten in nine before facing us. Throughout the 90 minutes, we gradually wore them down and as the game went on, I believed we’d have our moment and it came through Jack Diamond in the 94th minute.

It would be great for the club to pull one of the big boys out in the Third Round and amazing for the town to embrace another really big moment. Before we can think too much about that, however, we’ve still got big games coming thick and fast, and it doesn’t get much bigger than facing league leaders Forest Green Rovers tonight. They’re having a fantastic season and it’ll be such a big challenge but one we’re right up for. Recent results have been the perfect tonic and you can be sure we’ll be insistent on maintaining those high standards this evening.

I must say an enormous thank you to the supporters who have made the trips to any or all of

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM After a couple of weeks on the road, we’re back at home to face league leaders Forest Green Rovers and we come into the game in great spirits. Since my last notes, we’ve come away with three points against Carlisle, a point at Swindon – though I believe we deserved three - and then the incredible afternoon at Fratton Park. It was an amazing feeling on Saturday and you could see from the raw emotion of fans, players and staff, just how much it meant. We’ve been on such a special journey but hadn’t yet ticked that box of making it to the third round of this historic competition so it added to the jubilation at full-time. The support from our fans has been incredible and they all deserve a massive shoutout for their commitment and how they’ve stuck with us travelling all those miles in recent weeks. Up at Carlisle, then down to Swindon and then to Portsmouth the following weekend, it’s an amazing group of fans that we’ve got. To send them home with the win and give them that indescribable feeling when Jack Diamond scored the winner, it was special, especially because we were able to celebrate all together. The group and I are so grateful for the support and we’ll continue to work our hardest to keep creating these magical moments. The FA Cup draw is on Monday night and we’ll all be watching in anticipation to see who and where is next. With all the big boys now in the hat, you definitely want to be a part of it and it’s great that this year we can say we are. I’ve already been asked by many people who I’d like to face and for me it’s an easy choice… Leeds at Elland Road. My family and close friends are Leeds fans, I’m a Leeds fan and have supported them all my life so that would be the perfect draw for me. There’s a few Liverpool and Man United fans in the group as well so any of the Premier League clubs away from home would be special. The Chairman would probably say he’d

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

want a home tie but as players, experiencing the likes of West Brom last season was fantastic and it’s great for the football club. To test ourselves against a Premier League side away from home would be amazing. All you can ask for now is to continue building this momentum and this is a great platform going into what I believe could possibly be one of the hardest and biggest weeks of the season. The confidence levels within the group are in a good place, and as soon as we stepped off the coach returning home from Portsmouth, attention turned to Tuesday night. Forest Green have been incredible this season and if you look at how many points in front they are and the amount of wins they have considering the toughness of this league, it’s seriously impressive. It’ll be one hell of a task for us but we’ll prepare right and be fully focused on taking on the league leaders. It’s something we’ve got to look forward to and relish, and with the fans turning out in their numbers, it should be another amazing night at the EnviroVent Stadium. Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the game.

IN THE DUGOUT

Rob Edwards was appointed FGR manager in June. In a playing career that started at Aston Villa and spanned 14 years, the 38-year-old turned out for nine clubs, achieved promotion to the Premier League on two occasions and won 15 caps for Wales. But injury disrupted his career and, after leaving Barnsley at the end of the 2012/13 season - the former defender opted to hang up his boots at the age of 30. He went straight into coaching, working with young players, first as U18s coach at Wolves, then had three years working with the first team level as a coach. A year as manager at Telford in the National League North followed before he returned to manage Wolves U23s.

CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS FOOTBALL HISTORIAN LEIGH EDWARDS SELECTS TEN POST-WAR FOREST GREEN ROVERS ‘CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS’...

1981-82

Forest Green Rovers achieved an FA Vase and Hellenic League 'double' in 1981/82. Bob Mursell's side beat Worrall Hill 5-1, Ledbury Town 2-1, Chippenham Town 4-1, Almondsbury Greenway 2-1, Odd Down 3-1, Shortwood United 1-0, Willenhall Town 2-1 and Blue Star 4-2 in the FA Vase en route to the final. Two goals by Andy Leitch plus another from Kenny Norman gave Forest Green a 3-0 win over Rainworth MW at Wembley: David Moss, Kenny Norman, Peter Higgins, Graham Day, John Turner, Micky Burns, Brendan Guest (Dave Dangerfield), Steve Doughty, Andy Leitch, Steve Millard, Jimmy Jenkins.

1996/97

Frank Gregan managed Forest Green Rovers to the Southern League Southern Division title in 1996/97. They kicked-off with a 0-0 draw at Erith & Belvedere and overcame an early injury crisis to emerge as pacesetters with Havant Town. Leading marksman Paul Hunt and Karl Bayliss netted hat-tricks as Forest Green hammered Fareham 8-0 in mid December, then beat rivals Havant 3-2 a month later and went top of the table for the first time with a 4-0 victory at home to Bashley in late January. They remained in pole position with a club record 19-match unbeaten run and secured the title with a club record 91 points.

1998/99

2000/01

Paul Hunt was leading marksman and ‘Player of the Year’ with 25 goals as Forest Green Rovers won the Southern League Premier Division title in 1997/98. Frank Gregan's newly promoted side raced to the top of the table, dropping just two points in their opening nine matches, with Paul Hunt grabbing a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory at Gresley Rovers. They won only one of their next eight games but remained in the top three and underlined their title challenge with nine successive wins. Captained by Gary Smart, Rovers responded to pressure from Merthyr Tydfil and won seven of their last ten games to clinch the title with 89 points.

Frank Gregan guided Forest Green Rovers to the 1999 FA Trophy final. They kicked off in the Conference with a 2-0 defeat at home to Rushden & Diamonds and failed to win any of their opening six matches. The club's first Conference victory was 1-0 at Doncaster and results improved after this, including a run of just one defeat in 13 games as they finished mid-table. Forest Green defeated Boreham Wood 4-1, Witney Town 4-0, Weymouth 2-1, Hitchin Town 2-1, Southport 4-1 and St Albans City 4-3 before losing 1-0 to Kingstonian in the Wembley final. Marc McGregor and Alex Sykes scored 30 goals between them.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Forest Green Rovers reached the FA Cup second round for the first time in 1999/2000. Frank Gregan's side lost all but one of their opening nine Conference matches, but then Marc McGregor scored four times in a 5-1 demolition of Northwich Victoria. Ex-England winger Tony Daley arrived from Walsall in October and Forest Green trounced Guiseley 6-0 in the FA Cup first round before losing 3-0 at home to Torquay United. Dennis Bailey grabbed a hat-trick in a 5-2 Conference win over Telford United and they beat FA Trophy finalists Kingstonian and Kettering during the closing weeks, the latter to avoid relegation on the last day.

Forest Green Rovers reached the FA Trophy final again in 2001. Notable newcomers included former England goalkeeper Nigel Spink and defender Rob Cousins from Yeovil Town. They defeated Barton Rovers 6-1, Matlock Town 3-1, Rushden & Diamonds 2-0, Worksop Town 2-1 and Hereford United 6-3 in the FA Trophy before losing 1-0 to Canvey Island in the final: Steve Perrin, Adam Lockwood, Rob Cousins, Billy Clark, Tony Daley, Jason Drysdale (Frankie Bennett), Martin Foster, Stuart Slater, Chris Burns, Adrian Foster (Paul Hunt), Alex Meechan. They also reached the FA Cup first round again.

2015/16

2014/15

Forest Green Rovers qualified for the Conference National playoffs for the first time in 2014/15. Adrian Pennock’s side won their opening three games in a sixmatch unbeaten start and briefly topped the table. They remained in contention with just three defeats in 27 games, beating Southport 5-3 and slamming four goals past Kidderminster Harriers and Welling United during that period. Three straight wins in April enabled them to finish fifth in the Conference National. Jon Parkin was leading marksman with 25 goals. Forest Green lost 3-0 on aggregate to Bristol Rovers in the Conference National play-off semi-finals.

Forest Green Rovers finished Conference National runners-up in 2015/16. Adrian Pennock’s side began with nine straight wins and remained top despite winning only two of their next nine games. Cheltenham Town displaced them in November and that month’s topof-the-table clash ended 1-1 in front of 5,449 at Whaddon Road. Forest Green won 2-1 at AFC Wimbledon en route to the FA Cup second round. They regained pole position with five successive wins after Christmas but ended with just one win in ten games. After beating Dover 2-1 in the play-off semifinals, they lost 3-1 to Grimsby Town in the Wembley final.

2016/17

Forest Green Rovers won promotion to the Football League in 2016/17. They kicked off with a 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood under new manager Mark Cooper but soared to the top of the Conference National after losing just one of their next 19 games. They lost 3-2 at home to title rivals Lincoln in November but drew 5-5

at home to Torquay on New Year’s Day, then won 5-1 at Bromley six days later. Christian Doidge was leading marksman with 25 goals as they finished third. They beat Dagenham & Redbridge 3-1 on aggregate in the Conference National play-off semi-finals, then defeated Tranmere Rovers 3-1 in the Wembley final.

2018/19

Forest Green Rovers qualified for the League Two play-offs in 2018/19. Mark Cooper’s side began with a 4-1 victory at Grimsby and remained unbeaten in their opening 12 League Two games, drawing eight times during that period. George Williams became the first player to score a hat-trick for the club in the Football League in Forest Green’s 4-1 win at Newport County on Boxing Day. They gained four straight League wins in April and finished fifth in League Two with 74 points. Christian Doidge was leading marksman with 14 goals. Forest Green were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Tranmere Rovers in the play-off semi-finals.

Introducing the next generation of Town stars...

Alasdair Kerr What first made you get involved with Town? Following my release from Hull City, I was invited to the trials with Harrogate Town and after performing well made the squad. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I would say my main strengths are running with the ball, crossing and shooting which really helps me as a winger.

What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? Long-term I would like to become a professional footballer and go on to play at the highest level. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? I am really enjoying my football at Town and being at the Club allows me to express myself. Biggest influence in your football progression so far? I would have to say my dad. We would always go and play football together when I was younger and he has always been there throughout my footballing career so far.

What are you hoping to achieve in the Academy side this season? My personal aim is to keep performing at a high level and 26

GETTING TO KNOW...

Em Crispin Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? Started football in Primary School playing for the boys team and managed to get a girls team created in year 6 called the Pocket Rockets as the majority of the team were tiny. I then carried on throughout high school at Wigton Moor Girls, moving on to Tingley Athletic Ladies at 16 until 20 years old. I then joined Town after my previous team folded.

What first made you get involved with Town? Due to my previous club folding I was left looking for a club and saw that a couple of my friends had recently signed for Town. There were trials going on at the club before pre-season and I thought there was nothing to lose so went down and trialled out. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I think I am a very adaptable player who can quickly change my style of play to fit the position I am in. I also think I have a high work rate and I'm quite strong especially for my height/build. I also think that when playing a more attacking role I can read play very well and have good vision to link the play positively. What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? Win, work hard and achieve to the best my ability. No regrets.

32

Best game so far? Why? Leeds United Devs. I think my all-round game was much better than previous games. I started well and was able to maintain that throughout the 90 minutes. How do you think the last 10 weeks have gone? Amazing, been pushed to a new limit both physically and mentally that I have never been through at football so far which has been eye-opening. But I love the squad and believe that everyone gets on extremely well and that there are very promising times ahead! What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? Liverpool and my current favourite player is Mo Salah for obvious reasons but also because he’s a very down to earth, humble footballer who holds himself to high standards and isn't flashy in the media. People also say he’s a selfish player which I don’t agree with, I think because he has so much drive and determination to be the best, he sometimes gets tunnel vision in that sense. He is a massive club player not only working his butt off for his team but also for the fans.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Who is your biggest inspiration? My mum and dad. My mum had a stroke which left her paralysed on her left side but instead of giving up and staying wheelchair bound for the rest of her life had the determination to get back walking again and even returned back to work. She does everything for our family - cleans/ shops/washes etc all with one arm. Most adaptive, versatile woman I’ve ever met with determination that most people could only wish for. My dad is the most selfless, hardworking, giving man on the planet. He looks after my mum, and provides for us all. He never does anything or buys anything for himself and is the simplest man. He’s taught me so many life lessons, and I couldn’t ask for a better set of parents. Your motto in life? Success is not final; Failure is not fatal; It’s the courage to continue that counts.

DOB: 7th March 1998 Birth Place: Leeds Position: Central Defensive Midfield Football Hero: Steven Gerard

FACT FILE

What are your goals this season? To achieve promotion with this set of girls as it is the most together group I've ever been a part of. I would like to establish my place within the team and constantly strive to be better not only for myself but for the team.

What is the best thing about being involved with Town? Playing a better and higher standard of football, not only learning from coaches but also my teammates. It’s also great to play with such a selfless and determined set of girls. The dynamic of the team this year is amazing, no one is separated and everyone gets on so well with one another which I think helps massively in game situations.

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I 45

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
