MANAGER’S NOTES

T HE M A N AG ER

SIMON WEAVER GOOD EVENING and I hope everyone at home is safe and well and ready to support the lads in any way you can. I would like to extend my welcome to Matt Taylor, his staff, players and officials who have made the long journey up from Exeter to North Yorkshire today. Exeter are another really good, well-organised team and will be keen to rectify the result at their place before Christmas, so we will all need to be on our game to ensure that doesn’t happen and to get the result and our home form back on track. Last Tuesday night was frustrating for everyone as we were chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch after the defeat at Cambridge and were ready to go again, but the power cut was something you just can’t cater for and was very much out of our control, and then to get Saturday’s postponement was a double blow. Thankfully though we were able to get this one rearranged quickly for this evening. Last Saturday’s game at Cambridge was disappointing after getting off to such a great start. We got the early goal we wanted and dominated the first half hour but it was almost like going one up and having something to protect caused us a problem whereas it should have been the other way round. It was really on for us to cause them huge problems after taking the lead,

to drive on, play our way and push for another but instead we backed off, stopped playing our way and allowed them back into the game, to get their passing game going and to apply concerted pressure on us. Their ability and quality on the ball particularly in the middle of the park showed. That’s where we need to get to - we need to be brave and believe in ourselves in those situations and continue to play football. We had already lost control of the game by the time of the sending off. But, we live and learn and it’s why we were so eager to get back out there quickly, but that wasn’t to be, and we now look forward to the game tonight instead. We’ve started on the front foot in the last three outings against three very good ‘form’ teams in Oldham, Carlisle (despite being abandoned) and Cambridge, but we just need to find a way of sustaining that in order to get the results. After the first week of the January transfer window, we have added more strength to the squad and every one of the players is keen to do their bit for the cause and to help continue our progress as team. Enjoy the game wherever you may be watching it and please stay safe!

Simon

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

T HE C A P TA I N

JOSH FALKINGHAM TONIGHT WE HAVE A REAL TOUGH TASK in Exeter City. We’ve beaten them once already this season on what was a long Tuesday night trip but we had a good evening that night. With it being recent, we know what we’ve got to do to get a result again, but you could say, so do Exeter. I’m sure they’ll be desperate to put things right and get the result they’re after. They’re a really good bunch of players and it’ll be a tough evening for sure. We really want to get this home form kick-started now, and get some wins on the board as we have a few home games coming up one after the other. We’ve had a couple of postponements recently and it’s been frustrating as we all want to be playing games and building momentum. From the Oldham game back on Boxing Day, it was the start of building some and you could see from how we started against Carlisle just after Christmas, we were quick and lively. It showed the confidence was high in the group and we were wanting to kick on. It’s not stopped us but it’s meant we’ve had to wait a couple of weeks before getting the chance to play again. There’s nothing we can do about it except be ready when the games do come, and we put our all in out on the pitch. The first game after the first postponement was last Saturday and we started well, getting the lead

early on. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see it out, but Cambridge are a really top side and their recent form probably got them over the line. Going into a game with back to back wins or continuously getting points on the board builds the confidence and belief in the squad. We know we have the ability and confidence to match any opposition. We’ve shown that this season and the previous fixture against Exeter is the perfect example. In this next run of games, we’ve got to pick up as many points as possible and that all starts with making sure we put in the hard work from minute one of each game. Finally, I just want to say that I understand and empathise with everyone at the moment. The next couple of months are going to be very tough with the way COVID-19 is spreading, but it’s important now more than ever that we all play our part to reduce the spread of the virus. There is light at the end of the tunnel now and we just have to stay sensible and do our bit so that soon enough, we can get back to normality. It’s not a nice time for anybody, but we have to make sure we do what’s needed to protect as many people as we can. If we stick together, we’ll get through this and we’ll hopefully be seeing you back at the EnviroVent Stadium sooner rather than later.

and instead went to play for one of the top local teams, Wyke Wanderers. Lawlor would go on to win the League and the County Cup in his only season with the Wanderers before briefly moving onto Halifax Town, before going to Huddersfield New College. Lawlor played for the college team while also representing Sunday League football for Liversedge, earning £20 a match. Now 18-years-old, Lawlor had to decide what was next for him. He went down the academic approach, studying Sports Business Management at Sheffield Hallam University, although the big man admits he “studied drinking” more than his subject.

BORN IN HALIFAX, Lawlor grew up playing football as one of the stand out players for his local team, Brighouse. Playing as a striker as a youngster, Lawlor was sent on trial to Manchester United at the age of eight-years-old and out of hundreds of kids looking to join the United set up, he was just one of 10 to join the Red Devils. Seeing the likes of Eric Harrison - the man who famously coached the ‘Class of 92’ - wandering around at training was an everyday sight for Lawlor but it wasn’t something he truly understood at such a young age. “I didn’t think too much about him being there at the time”, he admits. “We used to have Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs doing the odd session as they did their coaching badges but for me, I just liked playing football at that age.” On the pitch, Lawlor would defend and attack with the likes of Danny Welbeck, Oliver Norwood and Matt James - three players who have gone on to have successful Premier League careers. For Lawlor however, as he got older, he began to enjoy his time at United less and less, and at the age of 14, was released by the club. “My mates would be hanging out after school but from Tuesdays to Thursdays, I couldn’t play with them as I was with United in the evenings up until 9/10pm. It was a lot to take in and although being released wasn’t a great moment I sort of knew it might be coming and there was a relief as it was a chance to start enjoying football again.” After leaving, Lawlor was in contact with several academies including Huddersfield Town, but the defender struggled to enjoy the academy approach

He opted not to play for the University team and instead came home at weekends to play at Ossett Town and then later Harrogate Railway at the age of 19. Both clubs were playing at Northern Premier League level and Lawlor believes that type of football has been beneficial for his career. “Football at that level and at that age was really good for me. I wasn’t fully developed at 18/19 but I was still playing against men so it was important for my development.” After graduating from University, Lawlor had found a passion for fitness, specifically CrossFit training. He and a friend decided to set up a gym called CrossFit 606, a business which is still going strong today, over eight years on. While involved in the fitness industry, Lawlor played the majority of his football at Guiseley, signing for The Lions in January 2013. It was a step up to Conference North football and Lawlor made a few appearances in his first half-season as Guiseley lost to Halifax in the playoff semi-finals. In his first full season at the West Yorkshire club, Lawlor and his teammates suffered “heartbreak” following defeat to Altrincham in the Conference North Play-Off Final. It’s a day he remembers for all the wrong reasons. “We were drawing 1-1 and it went to extra time,” Lawlor explains. “They brought a lad on in the last minute of extra time to take a penalty in the shootout that we thought would be happening, but then he scored with his first touch in the 120th minute. It was a heart-breaking and horrible feeling, we should have won that game. I remember going ‘what the ****, what is going on?!’ it was horrendous walking into the dressing room after that.” 13

time he was back, relegation was already confirmed. Manager Paul Cox had agreed to let Lawlor join AFC Fylde for the remainder of the season as they looked to secure a spot in the playoffs. Lawlor worked up his fitness levels to play a part in the final seven games of the season, but it wasn’t to be for the Lancashire side as they lost out to Boreham Wood in the semi-finals. For the centre half, it was a move which didn’t work out and at the end of the season, he moved on. “It was very strange joining a team at that stage of the season,” Lawlor admits. “I hadn’t played for three months so I was trying to get match fit for the semifinals after hardly playing. There was an expectation that they would sign me the following season but I ended up moving to Salford City.”

For Lawlor and his teammates redemption would fall into place the following year as they achieved promotion with a Play-Off Final win against Chorley. However, it was no easy task for The Lions. Bad traffic meant the coach arrived at the ground 45 minutes before kick-off and after half the game had been played, they found themselves two goals down. In the changing rooms at half time, there was that feeling of “here we go again” but a strong second-half showing turned the game on its head and Guiseley came out on top as 3-2 winners. Lawlor classes that day as “one of his favourite moments” and he stayed on with the club for another three seasons. In Guiseley’s first year in the National League, Lawlor admits the squad “did well” to stay up but then struggled to kick on the season after. “The two managers we had weren’t given long enough,” he says. “We had some good players but we didn’t really kick on. We had players come in from higher divisions who didn’t do it for us.” In the 2017/18 season, Guiseley were relegated and it spelt the end at the club for Lawlor. Having injured himself in January 2018, the defender was on the sidelines for two months and by the 14

The move to The Ammies wasn’t one out of the blue, however. Lawlor had nearly signed for them the previous year but the move failed to materialise. He joined for the start of the 2018/19 season but would only spend two months at the club after never getting a shot in the team. “Graham Alexander came in after I signed and I was the 4th choice centre half from the start. For the first seven games I wasn’t even in the squad,” Lawlor continues. “I knew I wasn’t going to play straight away as the two centre-halves had done well and helped them win promotion. I heard Wrexham were interested and thought it was a great opportunity for me.” The move to Wales provided some stability for Lawlor who was looking to get back in a team, playing consistently. The defender explains how turning up to watch the first game was a wow moment as the streets were just full of people in Wrexham tops. “The club is massive. They get 5000 fans every week, they’re a proper club and too big a club for the National League so the sooner they get out the division the better.” In his first season, Wrexham started the season well and were top at Christmas under the stewardship of Sam Ricketts. However, when

JAKE LAWLOR

he left to manage Shrewsbury halfway through the season, Lawlor confesses the team “slipped off” and just about finished in a playoff spot. A fractured shoulder meant Lawlor couldn’t help his side avoid defeat to Eastleigh. The second season saw Wrexham fail to move forward and Lawlor believes the club were “lucky” to stay up, as an early end to the season saw the Welsh side finish 19th in the National League. As Wrexham’s season was finished, Harrogate still had work to do in the playoffs and Lawlor was so nearly a part of that. As the season halted in March, Simon Weaver had contacted the defender to say he wanted him to join for the playoffs if transfers were allowed. When it was confirmed that couldn’t happen, Weaver gave Lawlor his word that no matter which division Harrogate would be in for the 2020/21 season, Lawlor would be offered a contract. It meant for the playoffs, Jake Lawlor became Harrogate Town’s number one fan. “I was watching the final, wanting Town to go up but I did think is there more chance of me signing if you stay in the National League?”, Lawlor chuckles. “I was rooting for Harrogate to go up and the fact they did was just incredible, especially with the journey the club has been on. It’s so tough to get the National League but Harrogate just carried the momentum that they’d been building over the previous couple years.”

After promotion, Simon Weaver kept his word and Lawlor signed for Town but the defender admits that at first, it wasn’t easy settling in. “It was good to be back playing football but it was also a strange one. It’s always hard coming into a new club and although I knew of the lads from playing them in the National League, it was hard coming to the club trying to make an impact when everyone is flying and doing well. At the same time though, my game has only improved being around a group who have been in such good spirits.” Away from football, this week is expected to be a very special one for the defender, as he and his partner are expecting the birth of their first child. Lawlor jokes that it could be a close call to match day and that his phone will be kept on loud, just in case. With a new addition to the family just around the corner, Lawlor begins the next chapter of his life, and although he still has years left of playing football, he already knows that a younger him would have loved the opportunities that have come his way. “As a 10-year-old, I’d have probably taken the career I’ve had so far. As a 17-year-old, drinking in Huddersfield with my mates and playing football for £20 per week, I’d have snapped your hand off to be a professional footballer. At that age, I never thought it would happen so I’ve got to be happy with what I’ve done and achieved.”

Jack Emmett IT WAS WITH GREAT SADNESS last week for fans, staff, players and everyone connected with Town when Jack Emmett announced that he was leaving the club - taking a step away from football for an indefinite period in order to concentrate on his recovery from illness. A local lad and fans favourite, Jack progressed through the Town youth system before joining Simon Weaver’s first team squad in August 2014. Since then the 27-year-old has gone on to make an impressive 229 appearances for his hometown club and in that time has been a key member of our double promotion winning squad. The 2017/18 season saw Emmett deployed in central midfield where he formed a partnership with Josh Falkingham, with whom he was named joint Players ‘Player of the Season’ and helped Town into the National League for the first time. Jack’s success continued on the pitch, helping Town reach the National League Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium and secure promotion to the English Football League. On Jack’s departure, Manager Simon Weaver said “It’s a sad loss for the club and the supporters. Jack has been thrilling to watch over the years. He has always played with a joy and desire to run at people and entertain. He was firstly part of our U17s set up under Mark Forster who recommended we take a look at him, and we would later send him on loan to Forster’s Wetherby side - he was getting kicked all over the park but kept getting up, an attitude which impressed us so much. We kept in touch when he went away to University and were delighted when he returned and would be training full time with us. I remember in pre-season at Thorpe Arch we put him in central midfield against Leeds United and he was waltzing past players. That was a big turning point for him and the club as he went on to play a massive part in us earning promotion from the National League North.” “His recent issue has saddened us all, but we respect his views and that his health is of paramount importance.” Weaver continued.

“He’s been with me for 11 years here and we have always shared a good bond, I’ll always think highly of Jack and the door is always open for him at Town, he is very much still a part of our family.” The club would like to place on record their utmost gratitude to Jack for his efforts at the club and wish him a full recovery.

“ THANK YOU TO THE CLUB AND TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED ME DURING MY TIME HERE. IT HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY AND I HAVE LOVED EVERY MINUTE, BUT I KNOW THIS IS THE RIGHT DECISION FOR MY HEALTH MOVING FORWARD. HOPEFULLY ONE DAY I WILL BE ABLE TO FULLY RECOVER AND RETURN TO THE GAME...” JACK EMMETT

Thanks f or everything Jack and good luck.. 20

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

EXETER CITY

The club was formed in 1901 as St Sidwell’s United and moved into St James Park two years later. In May 1904 they became Exeter City, and by the start of 1908-09 had become professional and were elected into the Southern League. The Grecians were invited to be founder members of the Third Division in 1920 before it was regionalised the year after.

The early 1930s was one of the most successful periods in the club’s history as they reached the FA Cup Sixth Round in 1931, losing in a replay to Sunderland. Two years later they finished second in the Third Division South which is their highest league position to date, however, only one club was promoted from the division at the time. In 1958 Exeter found themselves in the Fourth Division, but won promotion for the first time in 1963-64 for a two season stay in the Third Division. Bobby Saxton led them to promotion again in 1977, and this time they stayed in the division for seven years before relegation. Another FA Cup run to the Sixth Round came in 1981, losing to eventual winners Spurs. While the 1990s started positively winning the Fourth Division, the club were struggling financially and in 1994 administrators were appointed. Exeter came out of administration in August 1996, however, the new millennium brought little joy and in 2002-03 Exeter were relegated to The Conference. Exeter City Supporters’ Trust took over the running of the club and become majority shareholders and finances

were stabilised. They were helped massively in 2004-05 by an FA Cup run to the Third Round against Manchester United. A 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and a replay at St James Park wiped out a significant amount of debt. Paul Tisdale became manager in 2006 and Exeter reached the play-off final in his first season but lost to Morecambe. However the next season they beat Cambridge United in the final to return to The Football League after five seasons in The Conference. Exeter went straight up into League One in 2008-09, but were relegated in 2012. A poor start in 2016-17 had Exeter bottom in November, but they qualified for the play-offs before losing in the final to Blackpool. They appeared at Wembley again in 2017-18, this time losing to Coventry City before Tisdale left the club and Matt Taylor took the reins and led the side to a ninth place finish, just a point outside the play-offs. Last season Exeter had a strong start, unbeaten until the end of September, but had to settle for fifth on points per game. After beating Colchester United in the play-off semi-finals to reach another final, they lost to Northampton at Wembley. So, after three play-off final defeats in four seasons, Exeter will be more determined than ever to win promotion this season and things are not going too badly, with Exeter well in the mix as well as currently being the divisions top scorers.

Mental Health is a top priority for everyone We know this year has been incredibly difficult for so many people, with football behind closed doors many supporters have felt isolated and have missed the socialising or the release that football brings Mind’s latest research reveals that more than 60% of adults and over two thirds of young people (68%) felt their mental health deteriorated during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. Encouraging conversations around our own mental health and that of others has never been more important. Now more than ever, it’s important to stay connected, to reach out or to provide a listening ear. We want you to know that the EFL, Clubs and Mind are here for you. We are on your side.

‘Get It Off Your Chest: Men’s mental health 10 years on’ Three of the findings...

• Two in five men (43%) admit to regularly feeling worried or low, an increase from 37% in 2009 • The number of men who have suicidal thoughts when feeling worried or low has doubled to 10% since 2009 • Men are now almost three times more likely to see a therapist when worried or low than in 2009 For more information on the EFL and Mind’s charity partnership please visit https://www.efl.com/

Harrogate Town to launch their first ever #TeamTalk session In conjunction with the EFL and Mind, our clubs first #TeamTalk session will be taking place on Thursday 28th January, 7pm on Zoom. Sign up by emailing community@harrogatetownafc.com. The whole purpose is to urge supporters to talk and stay connected throughout January and keep the conversation around mental health going. New research into men’s mental health suggests that, while some progress has been made, men feel worried or low more regularly than ten years ago and are consequently twice as likely to feel suicidal. To help keep supporters connected our session will informally bring fans together virtually on Zoom to talk about football – helping them stay connected during what can be a difficult time of year for many. Along with connecting online, there is also opportunity to dial into the call using your landline or mobile phone. Please contact us on 07465 290222 or email: community@ harrogatetownafc.com if you need any help in getting set up.

SATURDAY 30TH JANUARY 2021 SKY BET LEAGUE TWO, 3PM

The original Newport’s 60-season stay in the Football League was ended by relegation in 1988 and in February 1989, the Club was wound up and expelled from the Conference. A group of 400 supporters reformed the Club in 1989 and were admitted to the Hellenic League, four leagues below the Football League. In 1989-90, The Exiles won promotion to the Southern League, and in the 1995, when they returned to Rodney Parade, were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division. In 1999 the ‘County’ moniker was reinstated, and in 2004 Newport took their place in the inaugural Conference South season. It wasn’t until 2010 they returned to the Conference, and the late Justin Edinburgh lead them back to the Football League beating Wrexham 2-0 in the 2013 play-off final. After 14th and ninth place finishes, Newport were threatened with relegation before Mike Flynn saved them in 2016-17, and from there

they have gone from strength to strength. Impressive cup runs and a play-off final in 2018-19 since have earned Newport a reputation, and with the start they have made this term, The Exiles have a great chance of returning to the third tier for the first time since 1987.

Dan Jones rises Andy high to set up Williams Will Smith’s equaliser.

In this season’s reverse fixture in late October, Town were undone by a late Brandon Cooper winner after Will Smith had cancelled out Pádraig Amond’s opener, despite Town playing the majority of the game with 10 men after the sending off of captain Josh Falkingham in the 37th minute.
