THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER I’d like to start today’s notes by saying Happy New Year and I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed taking the time to spend it with family and friends. I also hope everyone is staying as safe as possible. We’ve seen game after game be postponed due to Covid 19 cases with both our fixtures against Bradford City and Mansfield needing to be rearranged due to outbreaks in their respective camps. It’s a frustration but you can be assured that we’re following all the Covid safety procedures to try keep players and staff safe and to do our bit to keep our games being played. We had a tough run of fixtures last month having played Forest Green Rovers, Northampton Town and Sutton United in the league. We didn’t get the number of points we’d have liked from those games but I think we saw patches of quality which suggest we really aren’t too far away from where we want to be. Our last fixture was against Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy before Christmas and we successfully progressed to the next round following a 2-1 victory at Prenton Park. The spirit of the lads was superb, especially in the second half where we just grew in confidence. The introduction of Jack Muldoon at the start of the second half added another dimension to our attacking threat and once again, he showed how deadly he is when in front of goal. We all know the Papa John’s Trophy is a huge opportunity to once again play at Wembley and it’s why we’re taking it so seriously. Looking at today, our first fixture of 2022 is against Port Vale who have been at the top end of the table since the season began. In our three

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

previous meetings against them we’ve found them to be a very tough team to face and as we found out in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season, they have players capable of producing magical moments. The festive period is normally full of football so it’s been unusual not to be in the dugout during the last week or so. It does however mean we’re really looking forward to getting back on the pitch and in particular playing in front of our home support. Both home and away it’s been great to see the number of fans in terraces get larger and larger, and I can’t say it enough how much it boosts everyone at the club. Our form at the EnviroVent Stadium has seen a dip but if we can improve that going into the second half of the season, it could be key in helping us achieve what we’re after. We’re striving to challenge as high up the table as possible and with hard work and a desire to do so, I believe great things can come our way in 2022. Enjoy the game and Happy New Year.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM Good afternoon and Happy New Year! Finally, we’re back to the EnviroVent Stadium after what’s felt like too long without a game in front of our supporters. I hope everyone has had a nice Christmas and kept safe over the festive period. We had some tough fixtures in December with Forest Green, Northampton and Sutton all occupying spots at the very top of the table and although we came away empty handed from those games, we know that on more occasions than not, it was the smallest of margins that decided the contests. Of course we were disappointed not to pick up points against them but we’ve got to use those outcomes as opportunities to look at where we can improve. I thought we did that against Tranmere in the Papa John’s Trophy just before Christmas and deservedly progressed into the last 16 of the competition. To go back to Wembley is the aim as we want all our supporters to be able to experience that feeling of cheering on their team on at the national stadium. With the number of games called off, we’ve had a bit of a breather and a chance to recharge but it has felt odd as this time of year is usually the busiest when it comes to football. It’s just the world we’re living in the at the moment and a lot of teams have been affected by Covid. We’re testing daily and trying to keep on top of things, hoping we don’t have an outbreak. Home form is something we need to improve this year if we want to fight at the top end of the table and this afternoon we have the opportunity to start that as we face Port Vale, who have been

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

tricky opponents for us in previous encounters. We put ourselves up against it earlier in the season playing over half the game with 10 men but even before the sending off it was a difficult game and we expect the same on New Year’s Day. The aim for the second half of this season is to get in and stay in that top seven. That’s the challenge and we’ve got to push ourselves to get there. We’ve got a good platform and foundation but now we have to perform and believe we’re good enough to achieve something special this season. My mentality has always been strive for better and it’s what we’ll be doing each and every day. If we have a belief in what we want to achieve, it can take us anywhere Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the game.

FROM THE BOARD

SARAH BARRY Happy New Year and a very warm welcome to the EnviroVent stadium on this New Year’s Day. I hope you’ve had an enjoyable Christmas in light of the circumstances. We are continually working with the relevant experts and although there are no major restrictions currently, I’d encourage everyone to take personal responsibility and follow our published Covid-19 guidance to protect yourselves and others. The season so far… It was fantastic to start the season with supporters allowed back and we’re seeing an increasing number of fans returning more regularly with an average of 2500 attendance, twice topping 3000. Our aim is to build the next generation of Town fans by attracting more families and young people to add to the incredible core of long term supporters. As things stand, we’re in the top half of a very tight table and still in two cup runs having reached the last 16 of the Papa John’s Trophy, and of course the FA Cup which has to be a personal highlight of 2021. That phenomenal performance and lastminute win against Portsmouth seeing us through to the FA Cup Third Round for the first time in our history, was unforgettable. Looking ahead… We are planning to grow in all directions and will look to develop relationships within the wider

Harrogate District Community, working with more schools, Junior clubs, charities and organisations. Your match day experience is important, and fundamental to growth so we’re developing the pre-match and half-time entertainment, creating a sense of occasion with local schools and Junior clubs providing flag bearers alongside Harry Gator, and player mascots will return when restrictions allow. We’ll soon be starting work within the stadium to increase the number of seats and facilities and in the meantime, we are working on a short term solution to add a bar facility for home supporters as we appreciate this is not ideal. We thank you for your patience whilst we grow and I’ll keep you posted on developments. Many of you have already been in touch and I always encourage feedback so let us know what you’d like to see happening. For now, on behalf of the board, and all the team at Harrogate Town AFC, we’d like to thank you sincerely for your support and for being part of our team. Enjoy the game. #ProudToBeTown

CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS Football historian Leigh Edwards selects ten post-war Port Vale 'Classic Campaigns'... 1953/54

Freddie Steele guided Port Vale to the Third Division (North) title and FA Cup semi-finals in 1953/54. Vale stormed to the top of the table with just one defeat in their first 25 matches, trouncing York City 5-0 and Rochdale 6-0. Leading marksman Basil Hayward grabbed a hat-trick as they hammered Stockport 7-0 and their 'Iron Curtain' defence conceded only 21 goals en route to the title. Vale defeated Darlington 3-1, Southport 2-0, QPR 1-0, Cardiff 2-0, Blackpool 2-0 and Leyton Orient 1-0 in the FA Cup before former idol Ronnie Allen scored against them as they lost 2-1 to eventual winners West Brom in the semi-finals.

1958/59

Port Vale scored a record 110 goals as they swept to the Fourth Division title in 1958/59. Vale kicked off in the newly formed Fourth Division with a 4-1 defeat at home to Northampton and failed to win any of their first five matches at Vale Park. Results soon improved after this shaky start, with Graham Barnett and Ken Hancock making their home debuts as Vale trounced Gateshead 8-0 on Boxing Day. They went top in fine attacking style after winning 11 out of 12 games and won the title by four points, finishing with a 5-2 win over Millwall. Top scorer Stan Steele, Jack Wilkinson and Graham Barnett netted 63 goals between them.

16

1969/70

Gordon Lee managed Port Vale to promotion in 1969/70. Vale had shown a marked improvement the previous season and this was the launch pad for success, with Ken Wookey replacing Roy Chapman in attack. They started with an 18 match unbeaten run, reflecting hard work and strength of character, and recovered from a poor mid-season spell. Leading marksman John James grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Bradford PA and Vale were undefeated in their last nine games, finishing in fourth position. Five players - Keith Ball, Clint Boulton, John Green, Roy Sproson and Ron Wilson were ever-present.

1982/83

Top scorer Bob Newton netted 20 goals as Port Vale won promotion under John McGrath in 1982/83. The previous season's everpresent pair Mark Chamberlain and Mark Harrison moved to Stoke City during the summer and newcomers included Wayne Cegielski, Barry Siddall and John Ridley who returned from Chesterfield. Vale failed to win any of their first three games and Bob Newton arrived from Huddersfield, scoring in a 4-1 victory at Aldershot. They added Steve Fox from Wrexham and surged up the table with five straight wins, going top in late February after ten victories in 12 matches. Vale finished in third place.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

1985/86

Robbie Earle was leading marksman as John Rudge guided Port Vale to promotion in 1985/86. Summer signings included Jim Arnold, Andy Jones, Paul Maguire and John Williams, then Jon Bowden arrived in September and made his debut in a 4-1 victory over Cambridge United. Six wins in seven matches took Vale top of the table by November and they triumphed 3-0 at home to Crewe Alexandra on Boxing Day. Vale overcame a lean spell to remain unbeaten in 18 games and clinched promotion in fourth place with a 0-0 draw at home to Northampton. Other stars included Russel Bromage, Geoff Hunter and Phil Sproson.

1988/89

John Rudge plotted Port Vale's 1988/89 Third Division play-off final triumph. Vale had beaten Spurs en route to the FA Cup fifth round the previous season and the team was strengthened by the arrival of Ron Futcher from Bradford City. They went top of the table in mid-October after winning seven of their opening ten games, trouncing Cardiff 6-1 and Chesterfield 5-0 in the space of three days. Both central defenders were lost to injuries in January and Dean Glover arrived from Middlesbrough, helping Vale to finish third. Darren Beckford and Robbie Earle starred as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 in the play-off final.

1992/93

Port Vale reached two Wembley finals under John Rudge in 1992/93. Vale had been relegated the previous season and new signings included Paul Kerr, Paul Musselwhite, Bradley Sandeman, Chris Sulley and Ian Taylor. They won just one of their opening eight Second Division games but then staged a major bid to regain higher status at the first attempt, rising to second place by midFebruary after just two defeats in 22 matches. Despite gaining 89 points, Vale were pipped to promotion by Bolton. Consolation was gained as they beat Stockport 2-1 in the Autoglass Trophy final, but they lost 3-0 to West Brom in the play-off final.

1993/94

Martin Foyle was top scorer as John Rudge managed Port Vale to promotion in 1993/94. Martin Foyle and Bernie Slaven both netted hat-tricks as Vale trounced Barnet 6-0 in the opening home match,

then soared up the table with five straight wins. They maintained their promotion challenge with just three defeats in 21 games, also beating Southampton en route to the FA Cup fourth round. David Lowe returned on loan from Leicester City and Vale won eight of their last nine games, clinching promotion as runners-up with a 3-1 victory at Brighton in their final match. Dean Glover and Paul Musselwhite were both ever-present.

2000/01

Brian Horton managed Port Vale to LDV Vans Trophy final success in 2000/01. New signing Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Tony Naylor starred as Vale won their first two home games 3-0 against Oxford United and Swindon Town but they slipped down the table with just three wins in 19 matches, also losing to Canvey Island in the FA Cup. Steve Brooker arrived from Watford in January and inspired an improvement, with Vale remaining unbeaten in

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

12 matches to finish mid-table. They defeated Notts County 3-0, Chester 2-0, Darlington 4-0, Stoke 2-1 and Lincoln 2-0 before beating Brentford 2-1 in the LDV Vans Trophy final.

2012/13

Tom Pope scored 31 goals as Port Vale won promotion in 2012/13. Micky Adams’ side lost only three of their first 20 games and went top of League Two with a 3-2 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge at the end of December. They regained pole position with a 2-1 win at title rivals Gillingham a fortnight later but were overtaken by the Gills the following month. Pope grabbed hat-tricks against Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town. Vale won just three of their last 13 matches but clinched promotion in third place with a 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers on the final day of the season. Pope and keeper Chris Neal were both ever-present.

SEEING THE SIGNS

Club Chaplain Rob Brett has again been speaking to Mike Gibbs, Vice Chair of the mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District (MiHD) and Town Season Ticket holder. Mike, can you tell us what signs we may see when someone is suffering with a mental illness? Many people will suffer some form of mental illness over the course of their lives. Often, they will not recognise that they are suffering. This is where family, friends and work colleagues can help by spotting the typical signs that someone they know is not well. Mental illness can sometimes be complicated. However, the following are some of the common signs that a person is suffering: • Being withdrawn or lost in thought • Losing their sense of humour • Being erratic, unusually agitated, tearful, or, conversely, emotionless • Changes in appetite, weight or sleep patterns • Increased alcohol consumption • Not enjoying activities they would normally enjoy Thanks Mike, what can we do if we think someone we know may be suffering? Start by saying you’ve noticed a change in their mood or behaviour - without being critical. Or, simply ask “are you feeling alright?”. Say you’re concerned and ask if they’d like to talk. Don’t downplay their problems or say things like “what do you have to be depressed about?”

20 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Listen and give them space to describe how they’re feeling. Encourage them to see their GP or offer to go with them to see a health professional. If you think they’re at risk of suicide, you can call the emergency services, or call their GP for an emergency appointment. How important is it that we look out for each other and are not afraid to talk about this? Recognising the signs of mental illness early can make an enormous difference to all of our health and our lives! It’s like any illness, the sooner it is treated the better. Your sympathetic intervention can help make the difference. Your support will ensure that your family, friend or work colleague could get the help that they need. Referral to a GP is always recommended as a first step, where often diagnosis and treatment can be offered. Remember your vigilance may ensure that an individual does NOT suffer a further deterioration in their mental health and could help towards earlier recovery. Thanks Mike. Let’s all keep an eye out for these signs in our friends, family and colleagues but also in ourselves.

CHRISTMAS DONATIONS ROUND UP It’s been a busy festive period for the Harrogate Town Community Foundation, who this Christmas have been committed to helping those less fortunate than themselves.

At the start of December we asked the Harrogate Town community to provide items which could be of benefit to charities within the district, including Resurrected Bites, Harrogate Homeless Project, SASH, Harrogate District Food Bank and Harrogate District Hospital. We were overwhelmed with the generosity and support from everyone and we’re delighted to say we were able to donate so many important items including toiletries, canned food, chocolates and toys to those who need them most. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s helped to make a difference. It’s why we’re #ProudToBeTown.

On Saturday 18 December, the Academy played Burton Albion in their last game of the year. It proved to be an entertaining encounter, which ended up level at 3-3. Both sides gave their all and a draw was probably a fair result although both teams will have rued missed chances. Town started brightly and took the lead when Brad Williams slotted home smartly after a fantastic through ball from Finn O’Boyle in the sixth minute. Burton Albion then took control and deservedly equalised half way through the first half through Callum Niven, and the sides went in level at the break. In the second half Town picked up their game and created numerous chances and should have gone ahead after missing two one on ones. Then to add insult to injury, the young Brewers took the lead against the run of play in the 52nd-minute through Jakub Niemczyk. This did not deter the Town lads and they responded fantastically well and in the 63rd-minute, striker Emmaunuel Ilesnami was brought down in the box and George Horbury confidently dispatched the resulting penalty to restore parity again.

Unfortunately, once again Town allowed a cross into the box which Tristan Bennett scored to give Burton the lead again. At this point the Town lads could have buckled, but to their credit they instead moved up another gear and showed how resilient they are. The equaliser duely came in the 88th minute when a rampaging run from the half way line by Ilesnami ended with the keeper making a great save only for the ball to fall to Arron Sweete who finished smartly from six yards. The Academy are developing very well and continue to play good football and display an excellent work ethic in their first year and are looking forward to get going again in the New Year with a trip to leaders Lincoln City on 8th January. report by Carey Huegett

Harrogate Town Ladies hit five past Wallsend to end their final league game of the calendar year on a high. Town started well in possession but couldn’t capitalise on their dominance and on the chances that came their way and it was Wallsend who, against the run of play, found the opening goal after their pacey winger latched on to a long ball and scuffed the ball into the back of the net. Town stepped it up a gear and instantly replied after great combination play from Beth Jennings released Nat Eustance who squared the ball to Captain Emma Elliot who rifled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. Nat Eustance and Hannah Freibach came close, followed by shots from Beth Jennings and Lindsey Whitton. It was however, Elliot who stepped up to put Town in front in the 40th-minute as she smashed the ball home at the back post from a corner. After half time, Town started brightly as they increased their score line. Some quick thinking allowed Beth Jennings to go through on goal and beautifully lob the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 3-1. Just before the hour mark, Emma Elliot grabbed her hattrick after a powerful strike from the edge of the 18 yard box flew in to the top corner off the bar. A wonderful way to top off a captain’s performance and also earn herself player of the match.

Wallsend never gave up and grabbed themselves a second as their right winger flew in and drove the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Rachel McDonald sealed the 5-2 win with a volley from 12 yards which saw Town take away all three points and end their 2021 league campaign on a high - taking five wins from six games which sees them in third place in the table with four games in hand on leaders York City. Harrogate Town Ladies would like to thank everyone who has supported them so far this season. We hope you had a great Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year and we hope to see you at our next home game on Sunday 9th January at Rossett Sports Centre against Hartlepool United. GETTING TO KNOW...

Cass Lane Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? Started playing football when I was seven for Killinghall Nomads and West Riding then moved to Wetherby and got scouted for Leeds Ladies. Moved back to Scotton Scorchers for a season before moving to Harrogate Town at the age of 15. What first made you get involved with Town? When the ladies team was first set up I was asked to start attending the PDC sessions by Ged Maloney and then started playing for the ladies team. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? Pace, crossing and my ability to read the game. What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? Play the best game I can and make sure we get the three points. What do you think of the squad this year? It is a hard-working squad with so much potential to do well this season. How do you think the season has gone do far? Pre-season fitness was incredibly tough but it prepared us for the season and brought us all together as a team and that is starting to show in our performances and where we are in the table. What are your goals this season? For the team to achieve promotion whilst from a personal point of view, to develop more as a player, play as many

minutes as possible and hopefully get a few goals. What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? Play for as long as I can and gain experience through playing with and against older players. What is the best thing about being involved with Town? Playing with a friendly group of girls who will back each other both on and off the pitch.

Favourite quote? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips is my favoutie player – doesn’t stop running both on and off the ball and is effective at both attacking and defending. Best game so far? Why? Bradford City Women – first game back after injury and for the first team. Proudest moment so far? Getting 'Player of th Match' in Bradford City game. Toughest moment so far? Getting back to match fitness after not playing for months due to dislocated knee. What message would you give to young boys and girls playing football? Practice with your weaker foot, you will need it as some point! Your motto in life? Put 100% effort into everything you do and do what makes you happy.

THE REF ANDY WOOLMER 2021/22 STATS

Games Officiated: 19 ■ Yellow Cards: 63 ■ Red Cards: 0

Former postman, Andy Woolmer is an experienced official having been appointed to the Referees List in 2004 and has gone on to officiate more than 300 EFL matches. He has also served as a Premier League assistant referee for three years. This is Woolmer's 20th game in charge this season and his fourth League Two game of the campaign. The first time he has been the man in the middle for a Town fixture, this is his second Port Vale appointment after he refereed their 3-1 home win over Barrow in October. Last season, he took charge of 31 matches mainly in the Championship and League One and showed 93 yellows and one red card. Tonight, Andy will be assisted by Philip Dermott and Akil Howson, while Andy Haines is the fourth official.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
