THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon for an early kick-off and a Yorkshire derby as we get set to face Bradford City in front of a packed out EnviroVent Stadium. It’s games like these where form and momentum go out the window, and all that matters is the 90 minutes on that football pitch where we’ll have to fight for every ball and win every battle if we’re to come out on top. That’s what derby games are all about in my opinion; really fighting for the badge and being able to send the supporters home with the bragging rights. There have been some disappointing performances recently that we’ve all felt the hurt of, but our last three home outings have seen us win two, draw one and keep three clean sheets which is a big positive. Against Oldham we put in a really professional performance and then against Mansfield last time out, we did what has gotten us to this League which was put in a display that was full of passion, energy and grit. We know we disappointed the fans at Stevenage and we wanted to put that right, and I feel the lads deserved credit for the response against a Mansfield side that had won their last eight league games and will probably get promoted this season. We’ve now got to show some consistency and go into Saturday’s game with confidence and belief. Derby games are always the standout fixtures and ones I’ve always loved being a part

of and we’ve had great results against Bradford so far, albeit without fans. We’re really excited to be able to play this Yorkshire derby at home in front of what I’m sure will be a tremendous atmosphere, as Bradford will bring a lot with them and we’ll pack our end as well. There’ll no doubt be a great buzz in and around the ground and I think that could be a big boost for us and be our 12th man. In games like this where the margins can be so fine, sometimes that roar of the crowd can make the difference so let’s be really loud this Saturday, really get behind the lads and look forward to what should be a great afternoon of football. Thank you for your support and enjoy the game.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM Welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for what is a big afternoon as we face Bradford City in a Yorkshire derby. It’s these types of games that the supporters and players love most and we’re really looking forward to battling it out on the pitch and giving it our all. As a group, we’re not one to shy away from things and we’ve not been proud of some recent performances. Coming off the back of Oldham in the league, we felt like that result was the one to really allow us to build upwards but we followed it with a disappointing display at Stevenage where we really didn’t help ourselves in those 90 minutes. We need to eliminate those type of outings from our season as it’s proving costly and the fans deserve more, the management deserve more and the club deserves more. As players, we have to take responsibility and when we cross that white line onto the pitch, we can’t accept a defeat and certainly not a 3-0 defeat. I thought we reacted well on Tuesday night against an inform Mansfield Town in conditions that were tough with the strong winds. We competed well in the first half and in the second half grew in confidence but what was probably most important was that we put in a display full of energy and passion, something we’ve prided ourselves on since I’ve been here. Because of that, it wasn’t an easy night for Mansfield and a point was the least we deserved.
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
That was the first of three games to be played at home in a row and it sets things up nicely for this Saturday. It’ll no doubt be a great sound and atmosphere in all the stands and we’re expecting a bumper crowd for the early kick-off. I think it’s a great opportunity to use the energy and noise to put in a really positive performance and start something for the remainder of the season. There are plenty of points to play for and we all know what a couple of good results can do for momentum. We’ll be doing all we can to get those three points this Saturday and we as players are ready for the challenge. Thank you for your continued support.

Young and technically gifted midfielder Josh Austerfield joined on loan at the start of January from Huddersfield Town and we’ve been getting to know our number 19 a little better… by Henry Whitaker Josh, what are your early memories of football? My first memory was just being chucked into my local team, really. I had a couple mates playing for them and I got dragged up there to join them. Next thing you know you find yourself enjoying it and you’re playing every day. Two years later I was in academy at Huddersfield playing football 3-4 times a week and it becomes a big part of your life. I look back now and it’s ridiculous thinking how much time I’ve spent playing football.
Can you remember your first few years in the Huddersfield Town academy? I joined at the age of seven and when you’re that young I think you’re like every other kid who has that dream of becoming a footballer. I would hear a lot about Jordan Rhodes and also Alex Smithies who came through the Huddersfield academy and that was inspiration. There are also the big ones like Frank Lampard who was the midfielder I looked up to. I enjoyed my academy years and it was good for me. I went through spells where I enjoyed it and spells where I didn’t and you have those moments where you think it’s not for me, but now I look back on that and can say I’m glad I stuck with it. I’ve played all other the pitch through the age groups and one season I was on the wing and scored quite a few goals whereas now it’s quite the opposite. I feel like I’ve experienced quite a lot growing up.
You signed your first professional contract at the age of 17, how big a moment was that for you and your family? It was a great feeling to be told that I’d be offered a professional deal. It was a two-year contract and an unreal feeling to sign on the dotted line. When I first told my mum and dad they were obviously buzzing and I think it’s one of the best moments I’ve had so far, one I’d relive if I could.
What type of footballer are you these days? I’m a deep lying midfielder now that likes to get on the ball, dictate games and move it quickly. A lot of people think it’s the attackers that create the chances, but I feel I bring that to the game as a midfielder and people will see that the more I play.
You’ve had short loan experiences at Brighouse Town and Hyde United, what was it like to get a taste of men’s football at a young age? The loan at Brighouse came during the peak of Covid and the first game was an away trip three hours away. I came off the bench and got sent off after 20 minutes, so it wasn’t a great debut. After that, the season stopped so I played one game for them and that was that. I did most of the next preseason and up to Christmas with Huddersfield and then played a couple games for Hyde but again, Covid messed that up a bit. It was however nice to get a taste of men’s football which is very different to the academy games. It’s all about winning and no risks whereas the academy was all about developing and making you a better player. It was good to get both sides of it at 17/18 years old. continued overleaf...

What can you tell us about your professional debut which came against in 2020 against Rochdale in the EFL Cup? It was all a bit mad really. I was chucked into the first team during preseason as club captain Hoggy (Jonathan Hogg) was injured and he was the only holding midfielder at the club bar me. I did quite well in preseason and then the first cup game of the season came around. Hoggy was back involved but not ready to play the full game, so I got 10 minutes which was more than enough. To get on the pitch and make my debut was an unbelievable feeling and despite the loss, it was another moment I’ll never forget.
You also started in the FA Cup for Huddersfield against Plymouth last season, was that one to tick off the bucket list? I think that’s the most nervous I’ve been. It’s one of those moments where you’ve got to have real belief in yourself and although it took me 10 minutes to get into it, I loved the whole experience. It was a proud moment and a benchmark for me.
You joined Town at the start of January, how have you found things so far and what are you wanting to achieve? I’ve loved every minute so far. As soon as I got here, I’ve wanted to get involved and get started. For me, it’s showing what I can do in training and then putting it into the games when the Gaffer gives me the chance. I want to show what I’m about and feel like I can do that at this level. This move is a chance to improve and help me on my way to becoming an established footballer. That’s the main goal to begin with and then let’s see how far I can go.

1984/85 On Wednesday 27th March 1985, Town took a break from Northern Counties East League Division One North action and met Guiseley in the West Riding County Cup Semi-Final. In front of a crowd of 600 at Wetherby Road, Town won the game 1-0 after extra time courtesy of 23-year-old Micky Dawes strike in the 104th minute.

TOWN FANS HELP RAISE OVER £1,500 FOR COMMERCIAL STREET DEFIBRILLATOR On Friday 14th January, we put a host of match worn and signed shirts from our debut season in the EFL up for sale to help fund a piece of equipment that will save lives. Signed shirts from club captain Josh Falkingham, George Thomson, Lloyd Kerry and former Town striker Jon Stead were all included as we set a target of £1,500 for the defibrillator and case. The sale went live shortly after 7pm and we were overwhelmed by how quickly the shirts sold! We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who bought a piece of Harrogate Town history and have helped us to smash our defibrillator funding target! Community Foundation manager Iain Service was overjoyed to see the success of the shirt sale: “The generosity of supporters and the local public to get behind the shirt sale has been overwhelming,” Iain said. “The money raised will directly contribute to the purchase of a life-saving defibrillator on Commercial Street and with the clubs retail shop located on the street, it’s a fantastic way to leave

our legacy and assist people in need. We know that access to defibrillators can help increase the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest and so we’re grateful that we can have one in place on Commercial Street. We’re proud of our link with Commercial Street and with the increased footfall and everyone returning to the high street, it means that this defibrillator could end up be used if circumstances occur.” The defibrillator will be installed in the next few weeks and then registered online to make it easily accessible. Once again, a massive thank you for your support.

Signing for Bradford in June 2019 from Leeds United having spent the latter half of last season on loan at Valley Parade, the 24-year-old centre back began his career in his native country with Limerick before joining Leeds’ U23’s in March 2017 who he captained for the 2017-18 season. He made his debut for the first team in the Championship in April 2018 and went on to play four games for the Whites. He started the 2018-19 season on loan at Blackpool before switching to Bradford in January, prior to signing permanently that Summer. Ever-present this season, O'Connor is just shy of 100 total appearances the Bantams.

Both teams started brightly with each having good chances to score in the first 10 minutes before Harrogate started to take control with Finn O’Boyle, Tom Liddle and Emmanuel Ilesanmi all unable to convert excellent chances when through on goal. Town then had a goal disallowed from Ilesanmi as well as a strong shout for a penalty waved away by the referee on the same player. The goal finally came in the 29th minute with a excellent move starting with Josh Sharkey who smartly fed it into Joel Barker who found Ilesanmi in space, he flicked the ball on to Brad Williams who finished calmly from the right channel. Huddersfield then had a couple of chances but Josh Sharkey made two smart saves to deny the young Terriers. In the 35th minute Town added a second goal through Bobby Attree who reacted quickest after James Birmingham’s free kick had been

parried. The third came moments later after fantastic work by Ilesanmi down the right who crossed for Finn O’Boyle to slot home at the second attempt. More good work from Josh Sharkey prevented Huddersfield getting on the scoresheet and it was actually Town who added another just before half time with Ilesanmi getting the deserved fourth to cap off a superb first half display. The second half was a much quieter affair apart from Huddersfield scoring just after the restart but there was little goalmouth action for the remainder of the half as Town were compact and organised to comfortably see the game through and earn a much deserved three points. report by Carey Huegett
The First Team got back to winning ways after a 3-0 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday last Sunday. Town dominated the game but couldn’t capitalise on their chances in the final third thanks to last ditch defending and some fantastic saves from the Wednesday goalkeeper. Hannah Freibach went close early on when she latched on to a Cass Lane cross, followed by a long range effort from Nat Eustance that the goalkeeper tipped over the bar. New signing Rebecca Jeffels went close with a free-kick from 25 yards before Freibach opened the scoring after great combination play through the units; Rachel McDonald played the ball into Nat Eustance who flicked it on to Emma Elliot who got in behind the defence and although her shot was saved by the onrushing goalkeeper, Hannah Freibach was on-hand for the rebound to slot the ball home and make it 1-0. Rachel McDonald nearly made it two with a longrange effort followed by a Jeffels strike that was just wide. Wednesday continued to fight for everything, however the Town defence continued to nullify any attacks. Rachel McDonald went close to scoring for the second time and Hannah Freibach, Cass Lane and Abbey Smith continued to terrorise the home defence down the right wing. Town went into the break bitterly disappointed to only be one up, and knew it was all to play for in the second half. Wednesday came out and put the pressure on the Town backline, however, Cass Lane

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
