THE BOSS’S NOTES

T HE M A N AG ER

SIMON WEAVER GOOD EVENING and I hope everyone at home is safe and well. I would like to extend my welcome to Nigel Clough, his staff and players who have made the short trip up to North Yorkshire from Mansfield today. Nigel Clough has transformed the fortunes of Mansfield since he took over earlier in the season. He’s got a fantastic track record as a manager and his work at Burton and the legacy he left there has always been something I’ve looked up to and admired. We were delighted with the Carlisle performance last Tuesday. They are a huge side with dangerous players and just seemed to get bigger with every substitution that they made and were direct and loading the box with their height. We stood up to their constant launching of the ball into our area extremely well, did the basics right, and in all honesty, weren’t really troubled in terms of clear cut chances on our goal. Our concentration was exemplary throughout and we didn’t buckle under the strain like we briefly had done against Cheltenham the week before, so it was extremely pleasing to see such a streetwise performance to get the result. At the same time we tried to get the ball down and play when we could, and with the chances we created, maybe should have scored more than the one we did.

After the positives of that win, Saturday’s game at Scunthorpe was really disappointing. The goals we conceded were down to basic mistakes, but we still had plenty of time to get back in the game and just didn’t create nearly enough. Whilst the commitment and effort were there as always and we had plenty of the territory, we didn’t show enough quality to cause them problems or disorganise them defensively. We didn’t shift the ball well enough on the floor and didn’t carry out the game plan anywhere near well enough. Thankfully we get the opportunity to get back out there this evening and make amends. As I’ve said many times before, this is a real ‘learning season’ for the squad and the performance and result against Carlisle was a textbook example of that, with the lessons quickly learnt from the week before against Cheltenham. We’ll be aiming to do the same tonight after Saturday. Enjoy the game!

FROM THE SKIPPER

T HE C A P TA I N

JOSH FALKINGHAM WE FACE MANSFIELD TOWN tonight and we’ll be looking for a strong home performance, similar to the one against Carlisle United last Tuesday. I’ve spoken all season about home form and that it hasn’t been as good as it should be. But against a really good Carlisle side, we got the 1-0 win and after losing a few by just a single goal, it was a nice feeling to be on the other side of that. Everything we want from a home game we got against Carlisle. We made it hard for them to create chances, as well as tough for them to defend against us. They probably left with that feeling that it was a difficult night for them and of course that’s pleasing for us, not just because we won, but because the performance and resilience were what we expect from ourselves. What contributed a lot to the win against Carlisle was the strong mentality to see out tough periods. Throughout the season, there have probably been times when we haven’t been able to see out those tough moments and it’s resulted in us dropping points. Those key moments in games are where they’re won and lost, and unfortunately at home, too many times those five-minute spells have seen us switch off for a split second. The defeat to Scunthorpe at the weekend probably falls into that category as well but

we can’t be too down about losing a game or too upbeat after a win. We’ve just got to keep learning and improving each week. As always, it’s vital we don’t look too far ahead and instead take every game as it comes. You only have to look at the league table to see how ridiculously tight it is. Two wins can put you on the edge of the play-off spots while back to back losses could get you looking over your shoulder. Reflecting on when we played Mansfield earlier in the season, it turned out to be a good night for us and came at a time when we needed a result. They’re a difficult team to play against but that night we did the fundamentals well and when we did get that chance in front of goal, we took it. I think it could be a similar type of game tonight, but if we’re at a similar level, we’ll be in a good position. We’re looking forward to it and hopefully, we can get the right result, but to do that, we’ll have to win the battles and get on top of the game from the very start. From now until the end of the season, we’ve just got to keep putting in good performances and the results will follow.

GARRY PLANT

ON EVERY FRONT, the club has reacted quickly to life in the Football League and what goes with it and all the changes that has involved.

When crowds are allowed to return we will need additional volunteers and those opportunities will be published on the club website.

An established squad with the recent introduction of fresh faces gives us confidence and we are making strides toward establishing our EFL status. It is a closely fought league and the margins are very fine.

#ProudToBeTown

Meeting the administrative and commercial demands of playing in the EFL has not been easy. The off-field team has worked hard through very difficult times and the added complications of meeting COVID-19 operating protocols. Playing behind closed doors has been very tough for everyone, supporters, players and staff. What however has been extremely encouraging is the number of people that have stepped forward in various voluntary roles to help the club and the Charity Foundation. They can often fall under the radar but they are people every football club needs and we must always recognise their contribution. Without volunteers to help us on match days and other events we would struggle as a club and I hope everyone appreciates their time and commitment.

JOSH MCPAKE

JOSH MCPAKE Interview by Henry Whitaker

“I don’t think people in England look at Rangers as big as they really are up in Scotland. It’s such a massive club and such a big deal for so many. Football is everything to the Scottish people.” At 19 years-old, Josh McPake already knows the pressures and expectations that are to come his way if he wants to become a Scottish footballing great. One thing is for sure though, McPake is on the right path. Under the stewardship of Liverpool legend and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, as well as currently enjoying himself with Harrogate Town in League Two, there are promising signs. Go back seven years and McPake’s footballing story was beginning its first chapter. The Scotsman lived in Coatbridge, just outside of Glasgow but was first scouted by Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian.

16

JOSH MCPAKE McPake would spend two years with the Edinburgh based club but it wasn’t ideal for the youngster who was travelling a good distance just to train.

we’d do some finishing and Defoe would come up to me and I’d ask a few things and he’d teach me a few more. For a young boy coming up, it was so good to have someone like him around the place.”

“I’d come home from my school in Motherwell, not even have dinner and then get straight on a bus,” McPake explains. “I’d get changed on the bus and go straight to Edinburgh for training at night. That was my Monday to Friday at 13-yearsold. It was torture for me and it contributed to my decision to leave the academy. I remember it being so tough just every day sitting on that bus being completely knackered. I was starting to lose the motivation to go to training as I wasn’t with my pals, I was travelling all the time. A home game at Hibs was an away day for me.”

McPake was playing under 18s and 23s football while training with the first team, it kept his schedule busy, as well as attracting the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Another reason why McPake’s stay at Hibernian didn’t last longer was because of interest from Scottish giants, Rangers. It all happened very quickly for the Scotsman but as soon as he stepped through the doors at Rangers training complex (Murray Park) he knew he wanted to join. McPake describes the training ground as “unbelievable” with the move to the Gers being a “massive step up” for him.

Before turning 17, McPake was in talks with some of the biggest Premier League and European outfits who were keen to add the youngster to their ranks. As interest continued to grow, McPake was invited to Rangers’ first-team pre-season camp in Portugal. It was his first time away with the squad and ranks highest in his memories so far. “I loved it,” McPake recalls. “To have all that thrown on me at 17 was quite weird, especially with a club the size of Rangers and it’s meant I’ve had to grow up quite quickly, but that trip is probably my favourite football memory so far, I just loved every minute of it. Every day I was thinking ‘how lucky am I to be here?’ training with Defoe, Ryan Kent, all these top-class players.”

Soon after, Steven Gerrard became the Rangers manager and completely revamped the complex. New gyms, changing rooms and concepts all began to appear, as well as youngsters getting their chance to mingle with the first team players. The Liverpool legend brought McPake into the first team set up, allowing him the chance to learn and train from some of the best there is. Suddenly, McPake was now training with Jermain Defoe, Niko Kranjčar and Ryan Kent to name a few, and the Scotsman admits that at first, he was blown away by their presence. “It was surreal being around these players. I remember when Jermain Defoe first came into the club, it was one of those ‘I can’t believe it’ moments. He’s one of the top goalscorers in Premier League history. After training,

17

PLAYER IN FOCUS surprise to the youngster who only found out it was a possibility 24 hours before kick-off. McPake had planned to train on the Sunday and Monday as normal, expecting to support Rangers from the stands on the Tuesday night. But on that Sunday, he was pulled to one side by Gerrard, who had a message for him... “The Gaffer came over to me on the Sunday and said to tell my friends and family to come to the game on Tuesday. I thought that was a bit weird as to why he said that. Then on Monday, I was told that I was in the squad. I loved hearing that,” he grins. “I phoned my mum and dad, it was an amazing moment. They loved it as well and we were all so relieved that I was going to get the opportunity.” McPake would come on with 25 minutes to play, replacing the man he’d spent the previous months learning from, Jermain Defoe.

McPake shone in the Portugal sun and on his return to Scotland, was offered a professional contract by the Gers. Since he was enjoying his time so much, he was quick to sign on the dotted line. In the same year, the winger won the Scottish Youth Cup, SPFL Reserve League and the Under-18 League in the 2018/19 season, as well as picking up the Rangers’ Academy Player of the Year. McPake admits that he “wasn’t surprised” to get offered the pro contract but says everything was happening so quickly meaning he didn’t fully understand everything that was going on. From here, his development continued to gather pace. In July 2019, McPake was handed his first-team debut in the Europa League, coming on against St Joseph’s Football Club in front of 50,000 Glaswegians. However, the debut came as a huge

18

“I got chills,” he admits. “There were about 50,000 people screaming and then my name was announced, and since I’ve been an academy player, the whole stadium just erupted. I’ll never ever forget that moment.” Shortly after his debut, McPake was involved with Scotland’s under 19s team, aiming to help them qualify for the under 19s Euros. In a must-win game against Germany to finish top of their qualifying group, McPake stepped up and delivered, scoring the only goal in the match to secure Scotland top spot. By now, McPake was on loan at Dundee, gaining first-team experience in the Scottish Championship. After starting the 2019/20 season strongly, McPake then unfortunately injured his ankle and soon returned to Rangers for the remainder of the campaign. Once recovered, McPake rebuilt his fitness in the under 23s before going back out on loan at the

JOSH MCPAKE start of this season. There were plenty of offers on the table but it was Greenock Morton who McPake favoured. Now 18, he felt ready to kick on in men’s football and the relationship he built with manager David Hopkin helped him greatly during his six months with The Ton. “Me and him just hit it off straight away. He told me working with him would make me a better player and I believed every word he said. Everything he said did happen”. McPake adds, “He believed in me and I trusted him, it meant I loved my time there.”

Since putting on the yellow and black jersey, McPake has impressed on the left wing with his power, pace and direct dribbling causing defenders all types of problems in the past month. He got his first Town goal at Tranmere and played a key role in Town’s away win at Crawley at the start of this month. The hope now is that McPake can continue what has been a strong start to life in English football and help Town push on to even bigger and better things.

In December 2020, Hopkin resigned from his role at Greenock Morton and soon after, McPake, who had outgrown his loan, returned to Rangers ready for the next challenge.

For a young lad who is being watched closely by the Rangers hierarchy, there’s pressure on his shoulders. However, McPake is solely focused on the task at hand, knowing doing the right things now will only help in the future months and years to come.

His next destination would be Harrogate Town. Simon Weaver and his team beat competition throughout the division to secure the loan signing, with Weaver’s strong bond with Rangers assistant coach Gary McAllister helping to finalise the move for the Scotsman.

“I want to keep putting in good performances while I’m here at Harrogate. By doing that, I’ll get recognition when I go back to Rangers in the summer. For now, I’m just enjoying my time here, there’s been a good vibe from the minute I arrived and that’s my only focus.”

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION

MANSFIELD TOWN

THE CLUB WAS FOUNDED in 1897 as Mansfield Wesleyans and became Mansfield Wesley in 1906, before changing to Mansfield Town in 1910. Playing in local leagues up until World War I, the club moved into Field Mill, currently known as the One Call Stadium, just after the war. It has been used as a football ground since 1861 making it the oldest football ground in the world that hosts professional football. In 1921, the club was admitted into the Midland Counties League.

Having applied to join the Football League every year since 1923, the club were finally accepted into the league in 1931, joining Division Three (South) at the expense of Newport County. Due to their central location, Mansfield often found themselves moving between the two regional divisions when it was necessary to even up numbers. In 1961 they were relegated to the Fourth Division but regained their place in Division Three in 1963. The 1970s started badly with relegation to the Fourth Division but championships in 1975 and 1977 took them all the way up to the Second Division but their stay only lasted one season and the Stags were back in the Fourth Division in 1980.

In 1986 Mansfield were promoted again and stayed in the third Division for five seasons before being relegated, promoted and relegated again in successive seasons 1991 to 1993. The Stags managed promotion again in 2002 only to suffer the same fate of immediate relegation. At the end of the 2007–08 season, the Stags lost their Football League place and were relegated to the National Conference ending a 77-year stay. After five seasons in the Conference, Mansfield won the Conference title and returned to the Football League in 2013. Since then Mansfield have remained in League Two with mostly mid-table finishes apart from the 2018-19 season where after a fourth place finish, they lost to Newport County on penalties in the play-off semi-final. After a 21st place finish last season, this campaign didn’t start too well for the Stags with just two wins in their first 19 games, but a unbeaten run since just before Christmas including an impressive five game winning streak has seen Nigel Clough’s side turn it round, and they now sit comfortably in mid table just below Town.

LEAGUE TWO ROUND UP

LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP A LOOK OVER THE WEEKENDS GAMES IN LEAGUE TWO by Mark Walker, PA Media

Paul Mullin celebrates scoring on Saturday

On Saturday, Paul Mullin fired a double as Cambridge United won 3-0 at Mansfield Town to register their first win in three matches. U’s forward Mullin, leading goalscorer in Sky Bet League Two, took his tally for the season to 22 with two second-half efforts and Harvey Knibbs added a late third. Cheltenham Town remain third, but their eightgame unbeaten run ended in a 2-0 home defeat to Bradford City, who continued their march up the table. Andy Cook scored in either half for the Bantams, who are up to 13th after losing only one of their last 11 league games. Morecambe jumped from eighth to fourth and are one point behind Cheltenham following their 2-1 win at second-bottom Barrow. Barrow’s Scott Quigley cancelled out Aaron Wildig’s opener, but Kelvin Mellor struck Mansfield’s winner a minute later. James Wilson clinched Salford City a point in a 1-1 home draw against Carlisle United, notching a second-half equaliser after George Tanner had given the Cumbrians an early lead. Tranmere Rovers are sixth, one place below Salford, after they were held 2-2 at home against 10-man Oldham Athletic. Davis Keillor-Dunn gave Oldham an early lead and after James Vaughan’s penalty for Tranmere had been saved, Calum MacDonald equalised before the interval. Oldham’s Sido Jombati was sent off two minutes after the restart and although Kaiyne Woolery put Tranmere in front, Dylan Bahamboula hauled the visitors level. Southend United remain a point ahead of Barrow in 22nd after a late Shaun Miller goal condemned them to a 1-0 home loss to Bolton Wanderers. Port Vale’s first match under Darrell Clarke ended in a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient. David Worrall gave Vale the lead early in the second half and Daniel Kemp equalised just after the hour mark.

Clarke’s former club Walsall, now with Brian Dutton in charge, also drew 1-1, at Stevenage. The Saddlers led through a first-minute Caolan Lavery effort before having Liam Kinsella sent off 11 minutes into the second half – Elliott List levelling in the 70th minute. Crawley Town beat Colchester United 1-0 at home courtesy of James Tilley’s stoppage-time goal. And Scunthorpe United won 3-1 at home against Harrogate Town. After Devarn Green’s early opener for the Iron was cancelled out by a Josh March penalty, Ryan Loft restored the hosts’ lead and Lewis Spence wrapped things up late on. Forest Green Rovers maintained the pressure on leaders Cambridge on Sunday after goals from Josh Davison and Jamille Matt secured them a 2-0 win at Newport County. Davison struck just before the interval and Matt converted a second-half penalty to lift Mark Cooper’s side to within a point of top spot with two games in hand.

NEXT UP FOR TOWN AT HOME

Grimsby To wn

Paul Hurst

SATURDAY 27TH FEBRUARY 2021 SKY BET LEAGUE TWO, 3PM

The last decade began with Grimsby Town’s first relegation from the Football League in almost a century in 2010. After six seasons in the Conference, the Mariners returned to the EFL via the play-offs in 2016 and followed it up with 14th, 17th and 18th place finishes in League Two respectively before a 15th place finish on points per game (PPG) last term. 2020-21 has been a real struggle for the Mariners and they currently sit at the foot of the table. Prior to Tuesday night’s fixtures, they are on a run of nine games without a win, and are in need of points in order not to lose touch with the teams above them. After Ian Holloway’s resignation in December, Paul Hurst was appointed manager for a second time and has made 11 signings since returning. Whilst

wins have been hard to come by, it is worth noting that in the games where they have picked up maximum points, there are a number of creditable victories including at Cheltenham Town and Leyton Orient, so they definitely have it in them to pull themselves away from trouble. This is actually the third meeting between the clubs this season, having played out a 2-2 draw in the Papa John’s Trophy group stage at Blundell Park in early September whilst in the reverse league fixture in October, Town came away with a 2-1 win courtesy of a brace from Jack Muldoon.

TUESDAY 2ND MARCH 2021 SKY BET LEAGUE TWO, 7PM

Fellow League Two new boys Barrow have been up against it for most of the season after Ian Evatt left in the summer for Bolton Wanderers, and David Dunn was sacked in December and replaced by Michael Jolley, only for him to be relieved of his duties after the defeat on Saturday against Morecambe with Rob Kelly now appointed as Caretaker Manager until the end of the season. Under Jolley, Barrow won two of eight, but having played just three games in January dropped into the relegation zone, albeit with games in hand over Southend United and Stevenage above them, so they are in a position where they can still get themselves to safety. In January nine players joined the club, including Neal Eardley and Jamie Devitt to add some more 42

experienced heads. Scoring hasn’t necessarily been a problem this season but those goals haven’t translated into wins with The Bluebirds often taking the lead then letting sides back into games, consequently they have just five wins on the board. In the reverse fixture in mid-October, Jack Muldoon’s first-half strike was enough to give Town a 1-0 win in what was Harrogate’s first ever league game played at The EnviroVent Stadium on the newly laid pitch.
