THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER Seven points out of nine and three clean sheets from our last three home games leads us into tonight’s League Two fixture against Crawley Town with great confidence. There’s been a big improvement in our home games since the turn of the year and it’s pleasing to see from a management point of view but also for the fans, who were outstanding on Saturday in the Yorkshire derby. There was a great roar from the crowd and the Kop was absolutely rocking which is so good to see. It's a quick turnaround from Bradford but reflecting on it, I think it’s fair to say results don’t come much bigger. Derby games are special so to come away with all three points left a real buzz in the dressing after the full time whistle and hopefully everyone else was able to enjoy the win with family and friends. I thought we earned the right to create the chances against Bradford by doing the basics well and competing for every 50/50. The conditions were tricky yet we tried to play attacking football and the lads deserve so much credit for that. The midfield four have been absolutely fantastic in the last two games and it's built on that solid foundation at the back. I have to say that with the pace we’ve got in the side at the moment, it excites all of us and I think everyone can see the appetite of the players. It would be wrong for me to single out just one player as the derby win was a proper team performance.

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

I was saying to Paul Thirlwell after the game how many good runs start with a gritty 0-0 or a game where you value a draw and build on that in the following fixture. We’ve got the opportunity now to build confidence throughout the team and we’re just aiming to keep topping up the points tally and see how high we can finish. Tonight will no doubt be a tough encounter against John Yems’ side but we go into it with a strong belief and we’ll be ready to go into battle once again. Thank you for your continued support.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM Good evening and welcome back again to the EnviroVent Stadium for our third home game on the spin.

It’s been a really positive week in terms of performances and results as we’ve picked up four points and kept two clean sheets, making it four clean sheets at home on the bounce which is really encouraging. To put runs together and consistently pick up points, it has to start with defending well as a team, not just the backline, although the defenders deserve a lot of credit for their performances. With the attacking players we have as well, I always feel like we’ll have chances to score goals and I’m never not confident of that. If we keep earning clean sheets and keep working hard, hopefully more positive results can follow. Looking back at Saturday, the main thing was getting another result, especially as it was a local derby. To get the three points after a solid draw against Mansfield and send the fans home happy, it was a really pleasing afternoon. We’ve rightfully been questioned about our consistency and now it’s up to us put a run together and answer those questions. What we did do well on Saturday was the basics and being able to fight for every ball. The success we’ve had in the past has come from those principles and we did that better than Bradford, and since the turn of the year, at home we’ve been a side which feels

6

more like us. We want to make it really difficult for the opposition to visit our stadium and really dominate proceedings and I feel that’s happened more often recently. With the games coming thick and fast, we know that this month is an important one and tonight against Crawley is no different. We now have to prove that we can create our own good form and build on what’s been an encouraging couple of weeks at home. Enjoying tonight’s game and thank you for your support.

RICHARDS 12

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

www.harrogatetownafc.com I

#ProudToBeTown

Read our first interview with Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Lewis Richards, who has impressed during his early days in Town colours… by Henry Whitaker Lewis what was life like for you growing up? Did football play a huge part?

You signed your first professional deal at 17-years-old, how did that make you feel?

I grew up in West London and remember going to Arsenal games when I was really young. I also remember kicking a ball about at the age of four years old playing for the local team and it was a good team. Football is massive for everyone where I grew up and there’s a few who I knew from when we were just kids who are now also pros.

It made me really happy as I felt I’d worked hard for it but that was only the start for me so I couldn’t get too far ahead of myself. After signing the contract, I played a couple of u23 games and it was tough physically. From 18 to 21/22, it feels like there’s a big difference in physicality but I still found it a good experience. The next season I permanently moved into the u23s and began to understand about moving the ball quicker and how to adapt.

Which players stood out for you when you were younger? Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand were the role models growing up. Especially Ferdinand as he was a proper defender, like Nemanja Vidic and John Terry. When I was younger, I played a bit in midfield as well and I was a big fan of Yaya Toure. He could do it all and a powerhouse.

When did football start to get more serious for you? I joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of nine and it was a good experience. I was there for two years and was with the likes of Michael Olise who now starts for Crystal Palace. I then went to Brentford aged 12 and I really enjoyed it there and loved the coaches who were hard but just wanted the best for me. When the Brentford academy closed, I visited a couple teams but found myself enjoying football most with Wolves so I joined their set up. They were in the Championship at the time but doing well and it was a big thing for everyone. I went to a lot of the games and realised the fan base is so passionate and properly support their team.

At that age you were also starting to get involved with Ireland’s international set up, how did that come about? I’m Irish through my Grandad and have played at u17, u19 and u21 level. I’ve travelled to a few places with the squad and it’s good to have those new and different experiences.

You then made the step up to the first team and have travelled with the Wolves squad to the likes of Besiktas and Seville, as well as being in the matchday squad for Premier League fixtures. Do you feel like they were rewards for the progress you’ve made? Yeah, I think so, it’s helped me mature as well. It was a good experience for me being involved in the Europa League squad and that came about after a phone call after an u23s training session. They said I needed to go home and get my passport as I would be travelling with the squad and that was kind of a surreal feeling being around players that you’ve seen on TV perform at the highest level. continued overleaf...

HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I

13

What’s the main difference between being in an u23s matchday squad to a first team Premier League one? Being in the environment and seeing how players act when they lose or win, it reminds you it’s a serious game. Being up close and personal with that, you learn from it and take things away with you. It was a completely different atmosphere being in the first team changing room compared to the u23s as everyone had pretty much flicked a switch and was solely focused and ready to go.

You joined Town in January, does this feel like the right time to play first team football? It definitely feels like this is the right time for me to be exposed to men’s football and the Football League. I felt I did well on my debut and I was confident in my ability. That’s not to say I wasn’t nervous because I was but I think that nervous energy helped me. I knew that if I made the right decision, it would come off. To get the clean sheet was the most pleasing thing for me.

14

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

And how have you found being in and around the group? They’re all a great bunch of people, you can’t say anything bad about them. If I have questions, I feel like I can ask anyone no problem. At the end of the day, I’m here to learn so I want to take advantage of any opportunity I can.

What’s one of the biggest goals you have? I want to play in the Champions League and to do that will take a lot of hard work, drive, desire and discipline. It’ll take everything I have.

FROM THE VAULTS Our Club historian Phil Harrison delves into the archives to take a look at memorable Town matches from the past...

YORKSHIRE LEAGUE DIVISION TWO 1974/75

Town, under manager Peter Gunby, faced up to their biggest cup challenge for years when they entertained semi-pro Hyde United in the first round of the FA Trophy on Saturday 12 October 1974. The result was a 1-1 draw with Freddie Cliff scoring for Town, but they lost 2-1 in the replay. This was Town’s first ever season in this competition where they had beaten Guiseley in the Preliminary Round. Our next appearance wasn't until the 1993/94 season.

IN THE DUGOUT

John Yems returned to Crawley Town in December 2019 for his second spell in charge of the club, and signed an extended deal in January 2020 until 2023. His first spell at Crawley came in the 2006-07 season when he was appointed as one of three joint caretaker managers following the departure of John Hollins and helped the Club avoid relegation from the Conference on the last day, having started the season with a 10-point deduction. Further notable roles came when he was Assistant to Paul Tisdale at Exeter City, and when he joined AFC Bournemouth in 2012 as Football Operations Manager. The Cherries were in League One at that point, and over the next six years he was a vital part in their rise to the Premier League for the first time under Eddie Howe. He left at the end of 2017-18 season and after some time acting as a scout for several teams, including Newcastle United was appointed Crawley Town manager. 22

He started at the Tottenham Hotspur Academy before being released and joining Norwich City, where he made his Football League debut in 2009 as an 18-year-old. He went on to have loan spells at Barnet, Hibernian and Wimbledon before being released in 2013. His next port of call was a return to The Dons where he won promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2015-16. He then moved into non-league with Ebbsfleet United where he played 56 games scoring 21 goals before his move to Kent rivals Maidstone in October 2018. He joined Crawley the following Summer and had a spell on loan Michael Zemanek/Shutterstock at Aldershot in his first season before returning to West Sussex and cementing his place in the first team. Ever present this campaign, the midfielder has racked up over 70 appearances for the Reds in the last two seasons.

Having scored 15 goals in 46 appearances last term, Nichols won Crawley Town's Player of the Year for the 2020–21 campaign and the club took up the option to extend his contract.

They clinched promotion in third place with a last-day 1-0 win at Accrington.

report by Carey Huegett

Bolstered by new signings Rebecca Jeffels. Molly Havard and Monique Watson, Town Ladies moved up in to second place with two games in hand after a convincing win over a feisty South Shields side. With 15 minutes played, Town took the lead through Nat Eustance. Captain Abbey Smith played the ball into Watson who set Nat Eustance free on the left wing who beat her player, cut inside and launched a trade-mark looping effort over the South Shields goalkeeper from all of 25 yards. On the half hour mark South Shields equalised against the run of play when their winger and buoyed by the goal, the visitors came back into the game and put the Town backline under pressure. That was until the ever reliable Teagan Sorokan followed up a Monique Watson shot to put Town back infront before the break. After half time, Town found their rhythm and went 3-1 up when Molly Havard latched onto a Huegett long ball and exquisitely lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box – a first class finish and fully deserved goal on her debut. Hannah Freibach then gave Town a three goal cushion in the 60th minute smashing the ball home at the near post from just inside the box after great work again from Monique Watson. With 20 minutes to go, Waston got the debut goal that she deserved and capped off a player of the match performance, picking the ball up on the edge of the 18-yard box and drilling it past the keeper to make it 5-1.

South Shields got a conciliation goal courtesy of an own goal from the helpless Lindsey Whitton as the ball ricocheted off her chest into the back of the net. Unfortunately after that South Shields lost all discipline and a couple of unpleasant, needless encounters insued but the Town Ladies kept their cool and saw the game out to enjoy a well deserved 5-2 victory and a well-earned three points that take them up into second place.

THREE NEW RECRUITS FOR TOWN LADIES

Town Ladies had been busy over the last week bolstering their squad with three new signings: Rebecca Jeffels. Molly Havard and Monique Watson. All three girls are fantastic acquisitions for Town and may have a huge say in the second half of the season.

Rebecca Jeffels

Former Leeds United player, Rebecca brings a wealth of experience, quality and versatility to the squad. Jeffels is a born leader; a combative player who leaves everything on the pitch. Her tenacity combined with her eye for a pass will certainly make her a fans favourite.

New Signings: Rebecca Jeffels (left); Molly Havard (middle); Monique Watson (right)

Monique Watson

Also joining on loan from Brighouse Women for the rest of the season, Monique Watson is simply dynamite and destined to be a star. Her low centre of gravity, impeccable touch, tricky feet and turn of pace will terrorise defences.

Molly Havard

Joining on loan from Brighouse Women for the remainder of the season, Molly Havard possesses a ferocious left foot and will bring further attacking options for Town. Her competitive nature and technical ability will certainly add goals to the Town frontline – another fantastic addition to the squad.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
