SIMON WEAVER

The aim coming here today is to capitalise on the opportunity we have given ourselves after our victory last Saturday. The victory over Carlisle was a really satisfying three points but we aren’t going to rest on our laurels.

After the match as a collective we shared that thought. It was important that we took the weekend to enjoy, what was, a hard earned three points. However, coming in on Monday morning we were all focused on the task in hand.

Looking back at the win at Carlisle, we have a lot of respect for Paul Simpson and his backroom staff. His side are top scorers in the division and play a great brand of football. That respect is probably something which made the result feel a little sweeter.

We went to a difficult ground to play at, with a huge crowd cheering them on and showed fantastic levels of defensive solidity. I was pleased that the backline got the clean sheet because it was a reward which their efforts deserved.

The three new additions who played in the backline were solid. I am sure they’ll be pleased to get that first win because it goes a long way in helping players settle in. As a defensive unit we did all the dirty work which is vital in picking up a result in this league. I have spoke about the experience these lads have and that was something which was on show in that match.

The defensive instinct to sniff out danger really impacted Carlisle and their ability to build attacks which is hopefully something we can continue to build on.

We knew Kayne’s injuries were serious after the match. Seeing him in that state is something which flattens you a little because he was in a lot of pain. Thankfully Rachel our physio and the specialists at the hospital were able to see him soon after the match.

The news that he is out for the season is definitely a blow. He has been a big player for us this season and one who has progressed well since joining the club. Jack Muldoon also picked up a knock, but his is not too serious.

There is no let up at this level. Today we face Stockport who are in the middle of a great season. They are in the promotion places and after their victory over Tranmere last Saturday, they’ll be high in confidence.

This match kicks-off a busy schedule for us. We will go to three games a week to play catch-up with the games which have been called off. As a squad we want to go into that on the back of two good results.

It was pleasing to come away with the three points last Saturday. Carlisle have been on fire so far this season, Brunton Park is always a difficult place to go but we stood up to that challenge well.

During the game I felt we managed their attacking threat. We nullified them to shots from distance and defensively we dealt with everything they threw at us.

That defensive solidity is something which we are desperate to build on and keep moving in the right direction. Tom, Matty and Ant have been thrown into the deep end, they haven’t really played together but they have come in and hit the ground running straight away. I imagine personally, they’ll be pleased with the performance but as a team they have made a huge difference for us.

That win was a very good result for the club. However, we can’t rest. For us to start climbing the table, every week we need to reach that level of performance and hopefully results can come with that. If we can keep doing that, more often than not, you are going to be on the end of those lucky breaks.

We have came so close to doing the league double over Carlisle. A team who are battling at the top end of the table and it came down to virtually the last kick of the match earlier in the season.

The confidence is growing around the club. The lads coming in have got that first win under their belt and hopefully we can keep pushing forward starting with this match here today.

Stockport are a team with a lot of momentum. They are a football league club who are having a great season themselves. Looking at their team they have quality across the pitch and will come here expecting a tough match.

They are on the back of a good win themselves so confidence within their camp will be high and I am sure they will bring a good support with them.

We have been working all week on our plan to cope with the threats they pose. We have a clear idea on the way we want to play. Hopefully, we can impose that style and give you a performance to be proud of. If we can do that, I am confident we can pick up a result.

Finally, we were all gutted to hear the news on Kayne’s injury. That is something you never want to see on a football pitch. It’s a severe injury but hopefully he can get himself sorted and back as soon as possible because he is a big player for us and will be a huge miss.

THE MEN IN CHARGE

Paul Marshall 1997/98

Defender Paul Marshall first arrived at Wetherby Road for the 1985/86 season from Pickering Town after a spell at Frickley Athletic, and was part of the Town team that won promotion to NCEL Premier Division as well as lifting the West Riding County Cup.

In April 1989 Marshall went in search of work in Australia before returning to Harrogate in 1996/97 as reserve team player/manager. Marshall worked wonders with a good number of players joining the first team, now in NPL Division One, and was appointed first team player/manager and for 1997/98 with his brother Sean as his assistant by Christmas. Unfortunately a poor start to the season left Town in the bottom three after taking just two points from their first four games and after a slight improvement they then went on to lose seven out of eight league games between mid-November and late January, leaving them 19th of 22 in the table.

Marshall said Town were in a false position and with 19 games to go wagered a bet saying, “I’ll do the full Monty if we go down!”. This was to involve running round Harrogate’s famous Stray in his birthday suit.

Town Directors were now backing the under pressure boss after a 1-1 draw on Easter Monday with Whitby Town, the runaway leaders and eventual champions. A further 1-1 draw at Great Harwood

and a 4-2 win in their final game secured another season in NPL with Town finishing 19th. The local paper wrote, “The Harrogate public can sleep soundly in their beds as Paul Marshall will NOT be running around the Stray in his birthday suit.” Marshall said of the season, “You can only work with what you have available and I couldn’t have done much better with the resources at my disposal. With no money my job was extremely difficult and unless there is a cash injection, Town will continue to struggle.”

There was a big injection of cash for 1998/99 but after only four points from their first four games Marshall was relieved of his post on 12 September having managed 56 games, winning 10, drawing 19 and losing 27. He also made 84 (10) appearances for Town scoring two goals. Paul also played for Harrogate Town in the Veterans World Cup for England and received a winner’s medal.

He presently manages Northern League Division One Pickering Town after spells with Harrogate Railway Athletic, who he took to the FA Cup second round against Bristol City in 2002, and also managed Tadcaster Albion.

Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation are committed to increasing health and wellbeing, connecting communities and enhancing life chances. As an official charity we are committed to using the power of football to create positive change in our communities.

CELEBRATING GREEN FOOTBALL WEEKEND

Over the last week our staff, volunteers and members of our local community have taken big strides to raise awareness of Environmental Sustainability. 1st team players used their profile to take part in a ‘Layering Up’ challenge, encouraging families to consider adding a layer of clothing, rather than boosting the heating.

Harry Gator made a special appearance at Hookstone Chase School last Friday morning to join families and the school community in their ‘Walk to School Day’.

Along side the presence in the local community we took to social media and scored goals for Harrogate Town AFC, logging onto greenfootballweekend.co.uk and completing a number of challenges.

The match today will be celebrating our commitment to Environmental Sustainability, with supporters encouraged to make climate-friendly choices, both in their day-to-day and matchday routines.

ENVIROVENT JOIN FORCES WITH HTAFC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Today we are celebrating our ongoing partnership with EnviroVent, which will see members of their team taking part in Flagbearing and a Penalty Shoot Out at half time. Along with supporting the work undertaken by the Community Foundation, EnviroVent are key drivers in making positive changes that look to inspire others to become more environmentally efficient. Alongside supporting our Walk to School Days, the partnership is due to launch a new challenge to local schools and take part in the annual Knaresborough Bed Race to continue our drive for a more sustainable planet.

What do you do at Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation?

As Head of Foundation, I look to make decisions on new programmes. Explore new opportunities to help more people, whilst making sure we are raising awareness of Harrogate Town AFC across the local area. How and why did you get involved working within the Community?

I first joined the Club and Community Foundation in 2017, combining my role as 1st Team kit man with Community manager. Since then I have taken great pride in developing a hardworking, dedicated and committed team to support our local community. I love that the work we do makes a huge difference to peoples lives.

What’s the best thing about working for Harrogate Town?

The best thing is that the Club and Community Foundation are still so humble, hard working and have such a family feel. I am proud to represent the badge and truly believe that Harrogate Town are going places! We work extremely hard and enjoy coming into work each and every day. What is your favourite sporting memory?

Football wise, not to be too cliché but Harrogate Town gaining promotion to the EFL was incredible! As a Rugby League fan, I would have to say watching St Helens win trophies has been special.

Hobbies away from sport & football?

I am looking to improve my golf game. I like to travel and would like to own a coffee shop at some point.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

LLOYD KERRY

ISS. #17 - HTFC v SCFC

Last month the club officially launched it’s very own Hall of Fame. The purpose of which is to honour the contributions made by several individuals during our 108-year history.

Among those nominated was club legend and current Head of Player Recruitment Lloyd Kerry. The 34-year-old played an integral part in our historic success of recent years. After hanging up his boots at the end of last season, Kerry admits he is proud to be held in such a regard.

“I am really honoured and it’s a privilege to be put in that category. It was a special feeling when I found out I had been nominated. I have been a part of some really successful teams and I have no doubt that several of my teammates will be a part of the hall of fame in the not too distant future.

“I joined the club in the National League North. We were part-time and I didn’t expect to have the opportunity to represent this club in the football league. I have had a great eight years as a player and I am really enjoying my new role as a member of staff.

“My wife and kids were with me at the launch event and it was great to meet with the families of the other nominees. My little lad plays football and hopefully he looks at an achievement like this and is proud of me. However, the journey isn’t anywhere near finished yet, no one here is standing still. I have a new role now but I will still give my all to the benefit of the football club.”

Upon reflection, Town’s recruitment chief is pleased to have secured several long-term targets which he believes will help improve the club’s defensive record.

“Obviously, leading up to the window we had highlighted areas where we could strengthen. It goes without saying that we have conceded too many goals this season and we decided to try and strengthen the backline.”

“I am really happy with the players we have brought in. Anthony O’Connor and Tom Eastman are players who have loads of experience at this level and that is what we have been looking to add.

“We tried to get Ants in the summer, we spoke to his agent and there was just a sense that it wasn’t the right timing. Since then Ants managed to play a lot of games for Morecambe in League One but he was a player we really liked and he’s a really solid addition to the backline.

“I think a lot of it with transfers is just timing. It was the right time for Tom, we had tried in previous windows to bring him in and for whatever reason we haven’t been able to do that. We aren’t the biggest club in the league but we do still believe

that we are an attractive prospect for players coming in.”

However, despite several months spent planning ahead of the window, the 34-year-old believes it is impossible to be fully prepared.

“Obviously, there are players who the gaffer and the coaches have identified before, Tom Eastman being one. I have a list of players who I think could be available and have the quality to improve us. From there, we have to act and decide which players we want to move forward with. However, there are players who come up that you don’t expect to be available. The situation with Matty Foulds developed very quickly.

“He has played 20 times for Bradford this season, so when we realised he would be available I think there was around 24 hours between his name being mentioned and the deal being finalised. We know the quality he has and the interest there would be so we had to take that opportunity when it comes.”

The transfer window also saw defender Jahiem Headley depart the club as Huddersfield exercised their option to recall the full-back. Despite losing a player of his quality, Kerry believes the success of Headley’s loan further strengthens the appeal which the club has to potential signings.

“Jahiem was doing really well for us in the build up to this month. We had heard a couple of whispers about him possibly being recalled so we had to plan. As a club, we believe our loan players are given a platform to go and express themselves. We have a good track record with loan players and Jahiem is just another one to add to the list.

“We have used the loan market well as a club. We will always try to do that, we feel the loan with Tom and Matty have helped us to add experience to the backline. We have a lot of good options now.”

Elsewhere, the club’s transfer business continued as academy prospects George Horbury and Emmanuel Ilesanmi departed the club on loan deals as they look to gain first-team experience. Town’s Head of Player Recruitment believes these moves were vital in the next stage of their development.

21
harrogatetownafc.com

“The manager thought it would be a good opportunity for George and Emmanuel to go out and get minutes. I have tried to identify suitable clubs and thankfully we have manged to get them both to good clubs. They have started strongly and that is important because we really believe the lads have big futures at this football club. They have a lot of potential but right now they need to go and test themselves and play men’s football.”

The club also added winger Kazeem Olaigbe to our ranks on transfer deadline day. After identifying the winger as a potential summer transfer target, Kerry believes patience will pay-off for Town with the Southampton loanee spending the first half of the season with Ross County.

“Kazeem is a player who we watched a bit of in the summer. He ended up going to play for Ross County and has played a lot of football. That experience is undoubtedly something which will have improved him as a player so hopefully he can come here and kick-on again. He is an exciting winger with a burst of pace and is someone who we believe can have a huge influence at the top end of the pitch.”

After retiring from playing at the end of last season, Kerry admits nothing can replace the adrenaline experienced in the build-up to a match.

“I will always miss that matchday buzz you got as a player and being in and around the dressing room with my teammates. I still go into training as often as I can do, I am just grateful that I am still part of the club. I always try and help the lads in any way I can. I speak to the likes of George Horbury and the other younger lads to offer them advice where I can. I have experienced a lot in my career and hopefully I can pass that on to help them.”

However, the former Town midfielder has been keeping his schedule full as he continues to develop within his new role.

“I am currently doing my Talent ID level 3 course at the minute. That is a really intense course, it goes hand-in-hand with my job now and helps me to develop and improve. It also gives me a fantastic opportunity to network with people from a whole host of clubs. I am doing my B-licence as well at the minute which is something I have always wanted to do. I am doing that with a couple of the lads here. There is myself, Jack Muldoon, Warren Burrell and Joe Mattock doing it together which is great.”

“I have been watching a lot of games, speaking to agents, undertaking in both these qualifications. Obviously, you have family life as well which you have to factor into that so it’s great to be busy.”

Having held the role for six months, Kerry admits that he is still adaptating from playing.

“When I first took this role, I knew that networking would be one of the biggest things I needed to do. Being new to the role I had to speak to loan managers, scouts and agents to build links with different clubs. I feel like I have did that so far. It’s always improving. Every game gives an opportunity to grow your network and I feel like I am in a good place in terms of that side of my role. It’s a completely different mindset to that of a player, when you are playing you focus on you and your team but this job is different. I am still learning and adapting but I do feel like I am moving in the right direction.”

While the January transfer window may have just closed. Kerry has provided details on how the club will now plan ahead with the summer transfer window around the corner.

“The window might be shut but I am still watching games and trying to plan for the summer coming up. That is what we have to do because the picture is always changing in football. There is going to be positions where we feel we would like to improve, there is going to be players out of contract so we will work from now until the end of the season to assess where we are at and what we will need.”

“I have a list of players, there is a few who have already moved so we may have missed out on them. However, that’s part of football and we have to react to situations as they come up. This club is a good environment for young lads, the gaffer treats the players well and gives them opportunities. They come in to a great dressing room of players, lads who have played at every level and anyone who comes here tends to enjoy their time with the club.”

Harrogate Town AFC officially unveiled their Hall of Fame on Thursday 9th February at the Cedar Court Hotel. The event was attended by representatives from the 11 initial inductees, the Hall of Fame committee and club staff including Chairman Irving Weaver and Manager Simon Weaver.

Keep an eye on the club website and social media channels over the next few days for details on how supporters can have their say in selecting the 12th inductee.

The Hall of Fame was launched to recognise the individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the club over our proud 108-year history. Chaired by supporter Bernard Higgins, the Hall of Fame committee consists of a diverse group of Harrogate Town supporters representing different areas of the club, from the Independent Supporters Club to the Supporters Trust and Club Officials.

The Hall of Fame was researched and compiled by Phil Harrison, Harrogate Town Club Historian.

HALL OF Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of the work he did in developing the ground. GEORGE DUNNINGTON Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of many years of service. #1 #2 JOHNNY WALKER HALL OF FAME GEORGE DUNNINGTON Inducted into the hall of fame in recognition of the work he did in developing the ground. George was invited to Wetherby Road in the early 1980s by managing director Alan Smith. When he first arrived, it was for a drainage problem and through hard work in the 1980s and 90s George, with his willing band of workers including his brother Alf, set to work which resulted in a brand new grandstand, floodlights, terracing, clubhouse extension, fences, turnstiles, toilets, changing rooms, garage and canteen. He was elected Chairman in October 1986 until 1998. In November 1993, in his main role as head of ground development, Town’s Wetherby Road ground was voted best non-league ground in North of England thanks to him and his team of workers. In January 1994 he received £100 as part of his Ackrill/Dunlopillo ‘great sports award’ for his services to local sport and put it towards further ground improvements. 2012/13 saw him as the new club President. HALL OF FAME JOHNNY WALKER Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of many years of service. Town fan Johnny celebrated 76 years following the club in 2022 from the early age of 12 when he came down to Wetherby Road with his dad in 1946 to see Harrogate Hotspurs as they were known then. In 1957, aged 23, he became a volunteer behind the scenes until 2014 saying the club was his life. In his time he organised many raffles, did a lot of fundraising and was in charge of the gate staff for a good number of years and was also on the committee. In 1992, he was presented with a commemorative silver salver by HFS Loans League secretary for his long and distinguished service. Johnny was made a life member in 1996, acknowledged for 50 years service to the club in 2007 and was presented with a personalised Town shirt in 2018 for his lifelong support. He was also Chairman of the Supporters Club in the early 2000’s. ▲ @HarrogateTown harrogatetownAFC #ProudToBeTown HarrogateTownAFC 24 ▲

After having two early spells playing at the club in 1974/75 and 1976/77 then Secretary Charlie Hartley asked him to return as player/manager for the 1979/80 season as the club were at an all-time low after Peter Gunby’s departure. Under Alan’s guidance Town were promoted to Yorkshire League Division Two in 1980/81, were Division Two Champions in 1981/82 but then joined NCEL. He was sole manager in 1984/85 when Town finished runners-up in NCEL which earned promotion to the NCEL Premier Division 1985/86. HALL OF FAME JIM HAGUE Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of being Town’s all-time leading goalscorer. With 135 league and cup goals as well as being the season’s top scorer on five occasions, Jim Hague was also the youngest player ever to play for the club at the tender age of 14. Jim spent 17 seasons at Wetherby Road between 1956-58 and 1961-74 and racked up 402 appearances in that time, placing him third in the all time appearances list for Harrogate Town. He was an important part of the Yorkshire League Division Three promotion winning team of 1971/72 and scored one of the goals in Town’s West Riding County Cup success of 1973. In 1960, Wilf helped raise much-needed cash for the new dressing rooms. and has also been Supporters Club Secretary, Club President and has worked in the hospitality bar. In 1998 the English FA presented him with a gold medal for 50 years service to local football. His son Colin played for the club and Grandson worked on the club’s website. HALL OF Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition for helping form Harrogate Hotspurs in 1935 along with Chairman, John Thackray and Harry Lunn. GEORGE SQUIRES ▲ Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in helping Town get into the Football League. LLOYD KERRY ▲ LLOYD KERRY Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in helping Town get into the Football League. Midfielder Kerry, signed for Harrogate Town from Tamworth in the Summer of 2014. Although his time at Town as a player was a huge success earning him legendary status, he was plagued by injuries. He had a nightmare 2016/17 season with two serious, near career-ending injuries - a double fracture in his eye socket and fractured cheekbone followed by a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) - which together kept him out for almost a year. Despite these setbacks, Kerry would return to play a key role in Town’s promotion to the National League in 2018, and again, after spending much of the first half of the 2019/20 season out with an ankle injury, he returned and played a crucial role as Town secured promotion to the Football League. Playing two seasons of League Football for Harrogate, Kerry revealed that he would retire at the end of the 2021–22 season. His last game, and 224th appearance for Town, was at home against Sutton United in May 2022 when he was made Captain and both teams formed a guard of honour as he came on to the pitch and he left to a standing ovation. For 2022/23, he became Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of bringing better times to the Club and it’s fortunes both on and off the pitch. BILL FOTHERBY HALL OF FAME BILL FOTHERBY Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of bringing better times to the Club and it’s fortunes both on and off the pitch. The former Leeds United Chairman was approached by Roy Abel, Town’s Managing Director, to see if he was interested in joining the club as the new Chairman. Bill accepted the approach and arrived at Wetherby Road in 2000 to take up the role. With Bill’s knowledge, the club thrived, winning the Northern Premier League Division One title in 2001/02 after a long 15 year wait, before taking the club into the Conference North in 2004/05. He appointed Simon Weaver as manager for the 2009/10 campaign. Simon says, “He was a one-off, a proper big character, loveable and a very warm man and we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for him” ▲ HALL OF FAME GEORGE SQUIRES Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition for helping form Harrogate Hotspurs in 1935 along with Chairman, John Thackray and Harry Lunn. George did every job imaginable, from selecting the team to marking out and cutting the pitch to washing the kit and preparing the tin baths for the players, which were big enough for four men at a time. During the Second World War he was temporary Club Secretary and kept the club going and if it had not been for him, they would have folded. #6 #8 #7

As well as playing in the club’s first Northern Premier League game in 1987/88, he captained the side from 1989 to 1993 including skippering the 1990 HFS Loans League Cup winning side. Paul was given a testimonial match against Sunderland after 12 seasons at club and he later played for Town veterans and still attends games today. HALL OF FAME JOHN DEACEY Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of playing most league games for Town. Standing second in the all-time list of appearances for the club, between 1979-89 and 1992-95, John Deacey played a total of 441 league games for Town, whilst also scoring 70 goals. He was part of the successful early 80’s team who were promoted as runners-up of Yorkshire League Division Three in 1980/81, Champions of Yorkshire League Division Two in 1981/82, and then runners-up of the NCEL Division One North in 1984/85. which resulted in promotion to the NCEL Premier Division for the 1985/86 campaign. In his second spell with the club he became joint manager in 1993/94 and 1994/95. He went on to manage Farsley Celtic, Bradford Park Avenue, Scarborough and Tadcaster Albion. HALL OF FAME GEORGE SMITH Inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition for the amount of work he has done at the club over many years. It all began on Saturday 31 August 1946 when George scored the historic first goal for Harrogate Hotspurs (the new Town team) at Wetherby Road. Between 1946-50 and 1951-56, he played 124 games for the club scoring 46 goals and played before a record cup crowd of 4,280 at Wetherby Road in 1950. He tells the story that when he arrived at the ground it was full and he was not allowed in and ‘he was playing.’ George returned to Town in 1979 to join his son Alan who was Town’s new manager and joined the committee working tirelessly behind the scenes. In 1990, he became a Director of the club and life member in 1996. He watched matches regularly until his death in June 2018 - before his death, Town players took the footage of Town’s National League North Promotion Play-Off Final victory to the hospital for George to watch. George’s father Herbert was also on the Harrogate Hotspurs committee as Entertainments Secretary, so a real family affair for the Smith’s at Wetherby Road. ▲ ▲ #9 #11 #10

BURTON ALBION 1 Scott (17)

HARROGATE TOWN 3

Brodella (32), Ilesanmi (54), Taylor (78)

The Academy travelled to St George’s Park on Tuesday to play top of the table Burton Albion and came away with all three points in what was a superb display.

Goals from Josh Brodella, Emmanuel Ilesanmi and Cadarn Taylor turned things round after the Brewers had grabbed an early lead.

Town started slowly and found themselves 1-0 down after ten minutes after a long ball beat the defensive line and the Burton centre forward lobbed Harvey Giles.

After that, the lads settled into the game and could have scored on a couple of occasions with guilt-edged chances missed. Town did however get a deserved equaliser in the 32-minute when Josh Brodella cleverly chipped the home keeper for his fourth goal in as many games sending the teams in level at half time.

In the second half Town took control of the game and became too strong for their opponents and Manny Ilesanmi gave Harrogate the lead in the 54th-minute after closing down and dispossessing the keeper to tap into an open net.

Town continued to dominate proceedings and deservedly added a third from a free kick in the 78thminute courtesy of an acrobatic overhead kick finish from Cadarn Taylor and capped a fine display by the Town lads. This is the first of four games in 12 days for the Academy lads and the win lifts Town up to second in the table with games in hand and puts everyone in good spirits and ready to push on for what is now a crucial stage of the season.

Town: Giles, Williams, Birmingham, Wilson, Attree, Taylor, Brodella, Tweed, Ilesanmi, O’Boyle, Liddle

Subs: Nicholson, Moorby, Smalley, Samuels, Bray

Key men FOR THE HATTERS

ANTONI SARCEVIC

Midfielder Antoni Sarcevic joined Stockport County from Bolton Wanderers in October 2021, having led the Trotters to promotion from League Two as captain the previous season. Sarcevic began his senior career with Woodley Sports, after coming through the Manchester City academy. He then joined Crewe Alexandra in 2010, before going on loan and then signing for Chester in 2011. He then signed for League Two Fleetwood Town in 2013 where he went on to make 138 appearances in three seasons. After a brief spell at Shrewsbury Town, Sarcevic joined Plymouth Argyle in January 2017 and played 132 times for the Pilgrims in four seasons there. He made 30 appearances in total during County’s 2021/22 title winning season last term.

LAST TIME OUT

KYLE WOOTTON

Kyle Wootton signed for the Hatters on a free transfer from Notts County in June 2022 having spent three years at Meadow Lane in the National League. Whilst there he established himself as one of the leading centre-forwards in the division – scoring 59 goals in 134 appearances for the club. The 26-year-old originally joined Notts in the Summer of 2019 on loan from Scunthorpe United where he came through the youth system before making the move permanent six months later, and finished as the Club’s top scorer in each of his three seasons there, hitting 22 goals in all competitions in 2021/22. The big striker was also voted as Players’ Player of the Year in both of his first two seasons at the Club. He is level top scorer for Stockport this season with nine goals.

PADDY MADDEN

Boasting a prolific scoring record, Madden made the move to Edgeley Park from Fleetwood Town in March 2021. Having started his career in Ireland with Bohemians, Paddy moved to Carlisle United in January 2011, before going on to enjoy a successful spell at Yeovil Town where he played a part in the Glover’s promotion to the Championship in 2013. In January 2014, Madden signed for Scunthorpe United where he scored 60 goals in 195 games before making the switch to Fleetwood in 2017. The goals continued to flow as he scored 53 goals in 149 games for the Cod Army. Paddy made the move to County in March 2021 and went on to score seven goals in 15 appearances during the rest of the season. Last season the Irishman made 49 appearances in all competitions, firing home 25 goals and registering nine assists as the Club won promotion back to the Football League after an 11-year absence. His form and exploits also saw him named as Player and Players’ Player of the Year for 2021/22.
