THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER I’d like to welcome everyone to the EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon for our SkyBet League Two clash with Leyton Orient. Coming into the fixture, there are positives to take from recent showings and some clear areas where we need to improve. Firstly, I think our attacking displays have been superb. We’ve looked aggressive, hungry and ruthless in front of goal and that’s a great thing to see, that we’re able to pierce through impressive sides like Rochdale and Exeter. However, what’s happened a few times away from home this season is that we’ve looked so dangerous going forward but then not backed it up defensively and it’s left us licking our wounds. In our last two outings, we’ve had the officials apologising for wrong calls that have proved to be big moments in the games but nevertheless, this is growing pains and this is the reality of where we are currently at. We’re trying to mature at this level and think it’s important to remember we weren’t steamrolled in either match. We’ve competed in both and it’s all part of our development. Of course, having results like the last two after being in such promising positions does hurt badly but we’ve got to support the lads and then they have to show the courage to bounce back. I would also like to say a big thank you to the 37 fans who made the trip down to Exeter on Tuesday night. I know it wasn’t the easiest of fixtures to accommodate so to have you down there truly meant a lot to us all. We’re always
4
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
aiming to send the supporters home with a big smile on their faces so when that doesn’t happen, we feel that disappointment too. I think it’s worthwhile looking at the bigger picture and remembering we’re up here in League Two and competing with the vast majority of teams. We’re not setting up to have 0-0s, we’re trying to get through teams as we know we have the quality to penetrate. However, we’ve got to be steady with our defending and at the moment, we’re not quite there. This afternoon will be a chance to show the resilience and character that this team has been known for over the last few years. We’ve got a great group here and we have every trust in them to put their all into each performance. There are ups and downs on every journey but we’re in it together. Enjoy this afternoon and thank you for your support.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM
Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for today’s game against Leyton Orient.
We’ve had our fair share of battles with them over the last few seasons, whether that be in the National League or League Two and of course in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign, we put in one of our most solid displays this season. Two goals and a clean sheet made for a great evening and we were buzzing to send the supporters home happy after they'd made the long trip down to London on a week night. I think we need to take inspiration from that performance and remember how disciplined and solid we were that night. The long and short of it is that at the moment, we’ve conceded too many goals and it’s costing us big time. To give away two goal leads in the last two games and come away with one point when it probably should have been at least four, is gutting. Exeter on a Tuesday night was a difficult place to go, but we started so well, dominated the opening proceedings and could have scored more than the two that we had by half time. As the game went on, we continued to have our chances and we probably should have extended our lead even more. However, moments can change games and one area of weakness I think we had the other night was that we retreated too much as the second half wore on, and maybe we thought "lets hold onto what we’ve got". Maybe that attitude has to be changed. When you’re in moments in games where momentum is swinging and the opposition crowd get louder, it is difficult, but this football club has always risen to that challenge and so it makes it even tougher to take the defeat.
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
We’ve been so impressive on the attacking front in the last couple of games but we’re yet to put the full package together and that’s so frustrating for everyone. To go to Exeter and score three goals is no easy task and it could have been more, so we’ve got to use that to remain confident in our abilities. I must say the fans deserve a big mention for the support they showed on Tuesday night. It’s a hell of a long way to go to support your football club and I was so gutted we couldn’t hold on. And I’d like to reiterate how much we appreciate the backing home and away. Today will be a huge test, but we’ve got to rise to the occasion. We’ve got to show real mental resilience and toughness, which I believe this group has in abundance. We’re being tested at the moment and we have to own up to mistakes and take it on the chin. How we bounce back is now the most important thing and we’ll be aiming to do just that today. Thank you for your support.

14 handy tips to help you reduce condensation in your home this winter...
Condensation occurs when warm air collides with cold surfaces, or when there's too much humidity in your home and creates water, water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it. This is especially common in winter, when your central heating system comes on in the cooler hours of the mornings and evenings. While condensation itself isn’t a problem, if you do not treat it, it can cause damp patches to form where mould can grow and this can be bad for your health, as well as damaging the fabric of your home. If you are seeing lots of condensation in your home and are worrying about it developing into damp, a free home survey by one of our local ventilation specialists can help you get to the bottom of your problem.
14 WAYS TO REDUCE CONDENSATION IN YOUR HOME 1. Use pan lids when cooking 2. Close kitchen and bathroom doors 3. Dry clothes outdoors 4. Turn on the extractor fan when your using the shower 5. Ensure washing machine is correctly vented 6. Move furniture away from external walls 7. Install an extractor fan 8. Open windows when it's warmer outside 9. Wipe down cold surfaces 10. Ensure your property has adequate heating 11. Don't overfill wardrobes and cupboards 12. Stop using portable gas and paraffin heaters 13. Install double glazing, loft and wall insulation
NEED HELP WITH CONDENSATION, MOULD OR DAMP PROBLEMS? Adequate ventilation is essential to allow the moisture to escape from a property before it turns into condensation. Installing an energyefficient extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom can improve the humidity levels and prevent condensation. An alternative approach would be to have a whole house ventilation system installed in your home, ATMOS® can provide a condensation-free environment and can help reduce the moisture levels throughout your home.
ARRANGE A FREE HOME SURVEY TODAY One of our local experts will contact you to learn more about your problems, offer free expert dvice and make recommendations for a permanent solution. During the free survey we will: • Assess any condensation, damp or mould problems in your property • Take readings of the relative humidity levels • Identify any underlying problems and make recommendations for a permanent solution Contact us today to book a free home survey.

Middlesbrough loanee and Ireland u19 international Calum Kavanagh took the time this week to chat to us about his ambitions, being the son of a former Premier League footballer and what he makes of League Two football... by Henry Whitaker First of all, Calum, what memories do you have of football as a kid? I’ve been with Middlesbrough since I was six/ seven years old and was mainly a midfielder until I became a teenager, where I moved into a number 10 position but then soon became a striker and have been ever since.
Wou’re the son of former Premier League and Ireland international Graham Kavanagh, what do you remember from his playing days and how big a help has he been so far with your development? I was quite young when I saw him playing but I remember him being an angry footballer but a bit of a goal scorer and a tackler. My dad was a big figure in my life growing up and with the career he had, I look up to him a lot. I managed to learn a bit from him and he’s taught me loads already. The guidance and support was massive for me in the early stages of my life and still is now.
How would you describe your journey with Middlesbrough so far?
When I turned 15, that’s when I thought I’ve got a chance of becoming a good player. I got offered my first professional deal at the age of 16 years old and signed it on my 17th birthday. It was a massive moment for me and my family. To get a professional deal at a such young age, I was obviously buzzing and it gives you that bit of security for a couple of years. However, it’s about working really, really hard and chasing the next deal and the one after that.
You very recently won the January Premier League Two Player of the Month award after scoring seven goals in the month, including a hattrick against Sunderland. Does the award give you motivation to achieve greater success? Yeah definitely. I was really happy to win the award and have had a little bit of experience in Premier League 2 which I really enjoyed. It’s been massive in me building to first-team football now, but this is just the start. Hopefully I’ll do great things here at Harrogate. continued overleaf...
It’s been very good for my development. The coaches go into such detail on how to pass the ball and how to move with it. With the facilities at Middlesbrough, it’s all set up to help you achieve your potential. When I was 14 years old, I was playing in the under 16s and I thought I must be doing something right. Then when I was 16, I was in the under 18s and now I’m 18, I’m with the u23s.

Do you feel there’s any pressure that comes with your surname? Maybe a little bit but I enjoy it. Some people may recognise my name through my dad or from the little bit of noise I’ve made myself but regardless, it’s people talking about you and that can be a good thing. I don’t see my name and feel a pressure to do well though, I just go out onto the pitch and try do what I know I can.
You’ve also been involved with Ireland’s youth set up since u15s. What have you made of it? It’s been a good chance to meet and play with different lads, and to play for your country is an absolute honour. International football is very different to league football. You get less chances as the games are so tight and you have to take those opportunities when they came your way. I’ve managed to do that a few times and there’s times when I haven’t but it’s a great experience playing against different countries and learning what they’re all about.
16
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
You’ve so far featured a couple of times for us in League Two before you picked up a slight knock. Is League Two football how you expected it to be? I’ve enjoyed it but it’s a lot different to what I’ve been used to. The ball is in the air a lot more and it’s a much more physical game, but something I need for my development and I’m looking forward to progressing with it all.
Do you have any targets set for the next couple of years? I want to play in as a high a league as I can and obviously the goal is the Premier League. Whether that’s next year or in two or three years. This right now is the base and I have to do well before going back to Middlesbrough and hopefully kicking on again.

FOUNDATION TAKES PART IN CAREERS EVENT!
The Harrogate Town Community Foundation were recently invited into Woodfield Primary School to attend a ‘Careers Event’ for Year 5 & 6 students. The pupils had spent time in the previous weeks learning about different careers and thinking about what they would like to do in the future. Alongside the Community Foundation, there was also a photographer, an executive headteacher from another school and a member of staff from The House Association. In collaboration with the class teacher, the pupils had come up with a list of questions to ask each guest how they got into their current job, the skillsets and qualifications that were needed, as well as the best bits about the role. In small groups the pupils moved around in a carousel to speak to each guest, asking their pre-planned questions and then recording their answers. When the children had finished asking their questions, we talked to them about a few different careers that they could pursue within football outside of being a professional football player. The non-playing roles that we used were: A manager or coach, a match official and a physiotherapist. Examples of males and females who currently undertake these roles within the football community were used and the skillsets they needed to be successful were also highlighted. The pupils then thought about scenarios where they themselves had used these skills in their everyday lives within school or at home. A big thank you to Woodfield Primary School for inviting us and to the pupils who asked some great questions!

Experienced manager KennyJackett was appointed the O's new first team manager in May taking over from interim boss Jobi McAnuff who had been in charge since Ross Embleton's departure at the end of February. A promotion winner with three clubs, the 60-year-old's managerial career began at Watford in 1996, a club he had made over 330 appearances for in his career. Promotions followed at his next three clubs, guiding Swansea City up from League Two in 2004/05, before taking Millwall up to the Championship via the play-offs in 2009/10. In his next role, Jackett steered Wolves to a League One title, setting a divisional record of 103 points, and picking up the Manager of the Year award in the process. A short spell at Rotherham United was followed by four years at Portsmouth, where he picked up the EFL Trophy for the second time in his career, parting company with Pompey in March 2021. 24 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

With over 500 appearances in the professional game, Kenny Jackett immediately appointed Darren as his new club captain. Starting his pro career at Fulham where he made his Premier League debut as an 18-year-old, Pratley spent a season on loan at Brentford before signing for Kenny Jackett’s Swansea City in 2006. He spent five years there achieving two promotions, the second to the Premier League. He then signed for Premier League, Bolton Wanderers where he spent seven years before returning to London with Charlton in the summer of 2018. HOMEGROWN HEROES Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten notable players who progressed through the ranks at Leyton Orient Paul Went
Central defender Paul Went was both a player and manager at Orient. The England Youth international was Orient’s youngest League debutant at 15 years 327 days old against Preston in September 1965. Sold to Charlton Athletic for £27,500 in June 1967, he was ever-present in 1971-72 and moved via Fulham to Portsmouth for a then club record £154,000 in December 1973. He joined Cardiff City for £35,000 in October 1976 and returned to Orient in September 1978. Scoring eight goals in 95 League games overall for the O’s, he was briefly their manager, then worked in the licensed trade and died in January 2017.
Dennis Rofe
England U-23 left-back Dennis Rofe starred in Orient's 1969-70 Third Division title triumph. Signing professional at Brisbane Road in February 1968, he was everpresent for Orient in 1970-71 and an important figure as they reached the FA Cup sixth round in 1971-72. He netted six goals in 171 League games for the O's before following Jimmy Bloomfield to Leicester City for £112,000 in August 1972. Ever-present as they reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1973-74, he joined Chelsea in February 1980. He moved to Southampton in July 1982 and had spells on their coaching staff, also briefly managing Bristol Rovers.

Tommy Taylor
England U-23 central defender Tommy Taylor was ever-present in Orient's 1969-70 Third Division title triumph. The second youngest player to appear for Orient at 15 years 334 days, he turned professional in October 1968 and partnered Terry Mancini. He moved to West Ham in October 1970 and starred in their 1975 FA Cup final success, also playing in the 1976 ECWC final. Returning to Orient in May 1979, he scored nine goals in 230 League games overall. He then managed Margate, Cambridge United, Orient from November 1996 until October 2001, Darlington, Farnborough Town, King's Lynn and Boston United.
Barrie Fairbrother
Striker Barrie Fairbrother was the club’s first ‘Player of the Year’ as Orient narrowly missed promotion to the topflight in 197374. He turned professional at Brisbane Road in January 1969 and scored on his League debut to clinch a 1-0 victory at home to Mansfield seven months later. Glenn Roeder
England B international central defender Glenn Roeder had two spells at Orient. And today, these same people, the shop owners, the tradesmen, and the small businesses, continue to be the beating heart of our communities.

Emi Kontominas We get to know Ladies Reserves' winger Emi Kontominas, about her footballing background, her goals and ambitions for the season... Tell us a little bit about your footballing background? I started football at the age of 11 when I joined High School and ever since then, I haven’t stopped playing. I've played for Pannal Ash, Scotten Scorchers, Nidderdale United, Harrogate Town PDC, Harrogate Town Development Squad and now Harrogate Reserves. I joined Town in January 2016 when my football path started to develop and I wanted to improve my football skills as I felt I was behind everyone else and therefore wanted to catch up. What first made you get involved with Town? Me wanting to develop my football skills in order to improve and so I didn’t stand out as the “rubbish” one. What do you consider are the strengths of your game? I'm quick and having that speed really helps me to take on a player down the wing. What are your personal goals for the season? Scoring as many goals as I can and I'd love to score a screamer from outside the box. What are your long-term ambitions, football wise? To keep playing football. At Town, I want to continue to develop more as a player and hopefully get into the First’s. Longer term, I would absolutely love to get a scholarship to America, but at the very least I’d like to go to University and play for the college team.
38
What is the best thing about being involved with Town? How everyone likes to make it a full team, it’s not separate, we have socials where we can bond as a team and have good laughs and there's a real vibe of togetherness. How do you think the last 10 weeks have gone? It has been a bit frustrating as I've had a few injuries meaning I haven’t been able to perform to my absolute optimum. Overall, however, I’ve loved it whether that’s at training, just watching or playing - it’s been great. The last 10 weeks have shown me a lot about myself. What’s your best qualities? Very committed, hard-working, always have goals set and always want to reach them whilst I feel I am good at thinking on the spot.
Emilia Kontominas
FACT FILE
GETTING TO KNOW...
DOB: 8th December 2003 Birth Place: Harrogate Position: Right Wing Football Hero: Cristiano Ronaldo Team Supported: Leeds United Emi is kindly sponsored by
Who has been a big inspiration to you in football? Gareth Southgate as he always looks on the positive side, even though he got so much hatred for when he missed his penalty - he is now in charge of the England squad and bringing success. What message would you give to boys and girls playing footy? Don’t give up, even when it gets hard - the hard/painful things are only temporary. Your motto in life? It’s not about the winning and losing, it’s about how you play the game.
And your worst? I'm really impatient and that stresses me out plus I go to bed too late! What are your thoughts when you step on to the pitch? To win, make the team and club proud and play the best I can. What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? I support Leeds United and Kalvin Philips is my favourite player - he’s so caring of everyone else and a good team player and overall an absolutely class midfielder.
