THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER Good evening and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for our SkyBet League Two contest with Port Vale. I’d like to start my programme notes by thanking the supporters old and new for their following over recent weeks and in particular at Bradford last Tuesday. There were 704 fans in the away end at Valley Parade and I have to say it was a touching moment to see so many in yellow and black cheering us on. If I’d been asked 10 or even five years ago whether I thought we’d reach those numbers, I’d have probably questioned it, but the support is growing each week and it gives myself, the team and everyone at the club such a boost and it’s inspirational. On the pitch, victory against Bradford was a step up in terms of performance as we controlled spells of the game better and dealt with the pressure that came our way. We then travelled to Barrow on Saturday and earned a clean sheet and a valuable point away from home. Holker Street is a difficult place to go, especially when the wind picks up and in the second half that became a challenge, but we fared well. Tonight against Port Vale will be another tough test but we go into the game with confidence and a feel good factor around the place. We’ve looked exciting and dangerous going forward, and that’s how we want to be - to excite and entertain. We

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

know we’re a work in progress though and there will be the odd bloody nose along the way but it’s important we commit to our style of play and identity, with the aim being to establish ourselves at this level for years to come. Once again, thank you for your support and enjoy tonight’s game.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM

After four away games on the spin travelling to the likes of Exeter and Barrow, we’re back home tonight to face Port Vale and we’re all really looking forward to the challenge.

Port Vale are a strong team and in good form at the moment, so we’ll have to make sure we do the basics right, work hard for each other and then show our attacking flair when the opportunities come. Nine goals scored from our last four games is a great return and I think everyone can see the confidence in the lads when we do break forward at pace. We used it to good effect at Valley Parade last Tuesday in the Yorkshire derby and what an occasion that was for everyone associated with the club. To see such a large number of Town fans

6

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

make the trip to Bradford to support us, it meant everything to us as players. The club has come a long way over the last few years and the fans are a massive part of that. I’ve said before how it was such a shame that the fans missed out on the promotion at Wembley, the FA Trophy final and away trips in our first EFL season, so it now means that extra bit more when we can deliver the three points at such historic grounds like Valley Parade. It’s another memory made for all of us and there’s plenty more to come. Enjoy tonight’s game.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

www.harrogatetownafc.com I

#ProudToBeTown

Having made his 300th appearance for Harrogate Town in January 2022, we sat down with Warren Burrell to look back on what’s been a fairytale journey… by Henry Whitaker

THE BEGINNING… When I joined Harrogate in 2009, I’d just come out of professional football, having previously been with Mansfield Town. I wanted to get back into professional football as soon as possible but with Harrogate, I saw it as a chance to just get back playing football and start to enjoy it again. Towards the end of my time with Mansfield, I started to enjoy the game less as I was in and out the side. In the very early days back in 2009, the Gaffer came into the job learning on the job as well as playing as centre back. We had a squad full of trialists and a few more experienced ones like Curtis Woodhouse. The ground was nowhere near the standard it is now; the pitch was on a big slant, it was boggy and there were no training facilities. We’d train on the local park fields in Wetherby and with regards to the team, the games were very inconsistent.

RETURNING TO TOWN… When I came back in 2016, we were up challenging in the playoff spots in the Conference North and when speaking to the Gaffer, his focus was on promotion and progressing the club. It had been five or six years, but I could see how far the club had moved forward and how much the Gaffer had matured into the role and responsibility of manager. That season we finished mid table but the transition to becoming a professional club took us to that next level.

A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER… Decisions had to be made by everyone when the club chose to go full time. It would be a big lifestyle change for those who went full time and some chose not to do that. For me though, it was an easy decision to make, if I’m being honest. I had got used to working and playing football but I’d aspired to be a footballer when I was young and had a taste of it, so to have that chance to do it again with the momentum of the club, it was an easy decision. continued overleaf...

AIMING FOR THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE… We now had a squad all pulling in the same direction and it was a squad full of quality and hunger. When we got promoted out of the Conference North, there was a belief that with the same group, we could achieve even more. Winning becomes a habit and mentality and it was something this group was getting use to. We took that into the Conference against bigger clubs, in bigger stadiums and we embraced the challenge. It was a great achievement to reach the play offs in our first season, but we weren’t satisfied, we were actually disappointed not to earn promotion.

ACHIEVING THE DREAM… The next season we built on our debut year in the Conference, had a bit more knowhow on the league and added some players to take us forward. It all helped to get us where we wanted.

THE FIRST PROMOTION… Promotion from the Conference North holds a special place in my heart. It was our first season as a full-time club, so we were all spending a lot more time with each other and we were building a squad full of good lads. We achieved promotion through the play-offs, and I remember it being a sunny afternoon in Harrogate when we played Brackley in the final, and what a day that was. We won comfortably in the end, we all turned up and did the jobs we were supposed to do. It was a brilliant day and moment for the club, who had been in the Conference North for a long time. They’d been trying to make that next step for a long time, so it was a relief for that to finally happen and for us as players and for the fans, it was a special day.

16

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Promotion to the Football League is best moment of my career. It was a shame we couldn’t celebrate it with the fans but to say it was an empty stadium, the atmosphere throughout the day and night was brilliant. We went into the final with such confidence and there wasn’t a negative continued overleaf...

feeling in the camp whatsoever, no one could see us not winning that game. We went into the game with that mindset and that’s why we started so well, got the early goals, and achieved promotion. I think about it now and then, mainly the moments after the full-time whistle blew and the jubilation from everyone associated with the club that followed. It was a big day for everyone as for a lot of players, this was their first big occasion. But even for the likes of Jon Stead who had such a great career, he marked that as one of the biggest and best days. For the club and players, it was a massive, massive day.

LOOKING BACK ON 300 APPEARANCES… When I look back now and think about when I first came here and I think about those days training on a field in Wetherby and with the squad and staff we had, to then that game at Wembley where we were just 90 minutes away from promotion to the Football League, it’s a fairytale story.

18

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

This club gave me a chance to play football again and to enjoy it. This club helped me change my life off the field and the family feel this club has with the Gaffer, with Thirs and with the Chairman and his wife Dorothy, they’ve always made me feel welcome and been there for me if I’ve ever needed anything on or off the field, and that means a lot to me. We’ve all grown together, pulled in the right direction, and tried to always do what’s best for the club. We’ve been successful and that’s what we’ll continue to be moving forward.

FROM THE VAULTS Our Club historian Phil Harrison delves into the archives to take a look at memorable Town matches from the past...

Season 1985/86 Northern Counties East League Division One

Above: Town's two goal hero Tony Passmore

The Harrogate Advertiser reported on a league game between Harrogate Railway Athletic and Harrogate Town at Station View on Monday 5th May 1986 which Town won 3-2 with goals from Tony Passmore (2) and Jack Smith. It turned out to be the last ever league game between the two sides as Town were promoted to the Premier Division. It’s difficult to believe that Rail are today still playing in this league, six levels below Town, yet they were competing in the same league 37 years ago. How times change!

SEEING THE SIGNS

Club Chaplain Rob Brett has again been speaking to Mike Gibbs, Vice Chair of the mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District (MiHD) and Town Season Ticket holder. Mike, can you tell us what signs we may see when someone is suffering with a mental illness? Many people will suffer some form of mental illness over the course of their lives. Often, they will not recognise that they are suffering. This is where family, friends and work colleagues can help by spotting the typical signs that someone they know is not well. Mental illness can sometimes be complicated. However, the following are some of the common signs that a person is suffering: • Being withdrawn or lost in thought • Losing their sense of humour • Being erratic, unusually agitated, tearful, or, conversely, emotionless • Changes in appetite, weight or sleep patterns • Increased alcohol consumption • Not enjoying activities they would normally enjoy Thanks Mike, what can we do if we think someone we know may be suffering? Start by saying you’ve noticed a change in their mood or behaviour - without being critical. Or, simply ask “are you feeling alright?”. Say you’re concerned and ask if they’d like to talk. Don’t downplay their problems or say things like “what do you have to be depressed about?”

22

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Listen and give them space to describe how they’re feeling. Encourage them to see their GP or offer to go with them to see a health professional. If you think they’re at risk of suicide, you can call the emergency services, or call their GP for an emergency appointment. How important is it that we look out for each other and are not afraid to talk about this? Recognising the signs of mental illness early can make an enormous difference to all of our health and our lives! It’s like any illness, the sooner it is treated the better. Your sympathetic intervention can help make the difference. Your support will ensure that your family, friend or work colleague could get the help that they need. Referral to a GP is always recommended as a first step, where often diagnosis and treatment can be offered. Remember your vigilance may ensure that an individual does NOT suffer a further deterioration in their mental health and could help towards earlier recovery. Thanks Mike. Let’s all keep an eye out for these signs in our friends, family and colleagues but also in ourselves.

SCOUTING REPORT

We profile three important members of Darrell Clarke's squad...

Tom Conlon

Phil Oldham/Shutterstock

Signing for Vale in July 2018, the 25-year-old represented Stoke City, Newcastle Town and Peterborough United at youth level, before signing pro with the Posh in 2013. After just three appearances he joined Stevenage on loan in September 2014 and made the deal permanent in the January. In February 2018, he was briefly loaned out to Billericay Town and after 71 total appearances for Stevenage was released in May 2018 and joined Port Vale. Now in his fourth season at Vale Park, the midfielder has featured heavily every year and has quickly amassed over 135 appearances for the club and was rewarded with the captain's armband for the 2021/22 campaign.

The 24-year-old midfielder joined Port Vale in June from Blackpool after spending the 2020/21 season on loan at Oldham Athletic, registering 38 appearances for the Latics across all competitions. Upon his original move to Blackpool in January 2020, the Merseysider became the first Warrington player to seal a move to the professional ranks in 20 years, following 19 goals in 79 appearances for the Wire. Though he never made a competitive appearance for Blackpool, the club chose to extend his contract before his sale to Port Vale and since joining the Valiants, Garrity has been ever present and is currently the club's top scorer with eight goals in 28 league games.

LAST TIME OUT

Now in his fifth season at Vale, the 31-year-old came through Bury’s youth system, before joining West Brom in March 2007. After one game for the Baggies and loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury Town, he returned to Bury on loan in August 2009 before making the deal permanent in early 2010. Going on to play 178 times for the Shakers, he joined Rotherham United in June 2013 and was loaned to Oldham Athletic in January 2014 before moving to Southend United in the summer. He made 84 appearances for the Shrimpers before joining Millwall in June 2016. After two seasons he joined Port Vale in May 2017 and has gone on to make over 175 appearances for the Valiants.

CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS Football historian Leigh Edwards selects ten post-war Port Vale 'Classic Campaigns'... 1953/54

Freddie Steele guided Port Vale to the Third Division (North) title and FA Cup semi-finals in 1953/54. Vale stormed to the top of the table with just one defeat in their first 25 matches, trouncing York City 5-0 and Rochdale 6-0. Leading marksman Basil Hayward grabbed a hat-trick as they hammered Stockport 7-0 and their 'Iron Curtain' defence conceded only 21 goals en route to the title. Vale defeated Darlington 3-1, Southport 2-0, QPR 1-0, Cardiff 2-0, Blackpool 2-0 and Leyton Orient 1-0 in the FA Cup before former idol Ronnie Allen scored against them as they lost 2-1 to eventual winners West Brom in the semi-finals.

1958/59

Port Vale scored a record 110 goals as they swept to the Fourth Division title in 1958/59. Vale kicked off in the newly formed Fourth Division with a 4-1 defeat at home to Northampton and failed to win any of their first five matches at Vale Park. Results soon improved after this shaky start, with Graham Barnett and Ken Hancock making their home debuts as Vale trounced Gateshead 8-0 on Boxing Day. They went top in fine attacking style after winning 11 out of 12 games and won the title by four points, finishing with a 5-2 win over Millwall. Top scorer Stan Steele, Jack Wilkinson and Graham Barnett netted 63 goals between them.

28

1969/70

Gordon Lee managed Port Vale to promotion in 1969/70. Vale had shown a marked improvement the previous season and this was the launch pad for success, with Ken Wookey replacing Roy Chapman in attack. They started with an 18 match unbeaten run, reflecting hard work and strength of character, and recovered from a poor mid-season spell. Leading marksman John James grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Bradford PA and Vale were undefeated in their last nine games, finishing in fourth position. Five players - Keith Ball, Clint Boulton, John Green, Roy Sproson and Ron Wilson were ever-present.

1982/83

Top scorer Bob Newton netted 20 goals as Port Vale won promotion under John McGrath in 1982/83. The previous season's everpresent pair Mark Chamberlain and Mark Harrison moved to Stoke City during the summer and newcomers included Wayne Cegielski, Barry Siddall and John Ridley who returned from Chesterfield. Vale failed to win any of their first three games and Bob Newton arrived from Huddersfield, scoring in a 4-1 victory at Aldershot. They added Steve Fox from Wrexham and surged up the table with five straight wins, going top in late February after ten victories in 12 matches. Vale finished in third place.

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

1985/86

Robbie Earle was leading marksman as John Rudge guided Port Vale to promotion in 1985/86. Summer signings included Jim Arnold, Andy Jones, Paul Maguire and John Williams, then Jon Bowden arrived in September and made his debut in a 4-1 victory over Cambridge United. Six wins in seven matches took Vale top of the table by November and they triumphed 3-0 at home to Crewe Alexandra on Boxing Day. Vale overcame a lean spell to remain unbeaten in 18 games and clinched promotion in fourth place with a 0-0 draw at home to Northampton. Other stars included Russel Bromage, Geoff Hunter and Phil Sproson.

1988/89

John Rudge plotted Port Vale's 1988/89 Third Division play-off final triumph. Vale had beaten Spurs en route to the FA Cup fifth round the previous season and the team was strengthened by the arrival of Ron Futcher from Bradford City. They went top of the table in mid-October after winning seven of their opening ten games, trouncing Cardiff 6-1 and Chesterfield 5-0 in the space of three days. Both central defenders were lost to injuries in January and Dean Glover arrived from Middlesbrough, helping Vale to finish third. Darren Beckford and Robbie Earle starred as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 in the play-off final.

1992/93

Port Vale reached two Wembley finals under John Rudge in 1992/93. Vale had been relegated the previous season and new signings included Paul Kerr, Paul Musselwhite, Bradley Sandeman, Chris Sulley and Ian Taylor. They won just one of their opening eight Second Division games but then staged a major bid to regain higher status at the first attempt, rising to second place by midFebruary after just two defeats in 22 matches. Despite gaining 89 points, Vale were pipped to promotion by Bolton. Consolation was gained as they beat Stockport 2-1 in the Autoglass Trophy final, but they lost 3-0 to West Brom in the play-off final.

1993/94

Martin Foyle was top scorer as John Rudge managed Port Vale to promotion in 1993/94. Martin Foyle and Bernie Slaven both netted hat-tricks as Vale trounced Barnet 6-0 in the opening home match,

then soared up the table with five straight wins. They maintained their promotion challenge with just three defeats in 21 games, also beating Southampton en route to the FA Cup fourth round. David Lowe returned on loan from Leicester City and Vale won eight of their last nine games, clinching promotion as runners-up with a 3-1 victory at Brighton in their final match. Dean Glover and Paul Musselwhite were both ever-present.

2000/01

Brian Horton managed Port Vale to LDV Vans Trophy final success in 2000/01. New signing Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Tony Naylor starred as Vale won their first two home games 3-0 against Oxford United and Swindon Town but they slipped down the table with just three wins in 19 matches, also losing to Canvey Island in the FA Cup. Steve Brooker arrived from Watford in January and inspired an improvement, with Vale remaining unbeaten in

12 matches to finish mid-table. They defeated Notts County 3-0, Chester 2-0, Darlington 4-0, Stoke 2-1 and Lincoln 2-0 before beating Brentford 2-1 in the LDV Vans Trophy final.

2012/13

Tom Pope scored 31 goals as Port Vale won promotion in 2012/13. Micky Adams’ side lost only three of their first 20 games and went top of League Two with a 3-2 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge at the end of December. They regained pole position with a 2-1 win at title rivals Gillingham a fortnight later but were overtaken by the Gills the following month. Pope grabbed hat-tricks against Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town. Vale won just three of their last 13 matches but clinched promotion in third place with a 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers on the final day of the season. Pope and keeper Chris Neal were both ever-present.

Last Sunday 20th February, Town enjoyed a Yorkshire derby win over local rivals Wakefield Trinity Ladies thanks to goals from Nat Eustance, Hannah Freibach and Becky Wilson. In treacherous weather conditions (thanks to Storm Eunice), Wakefield started brightly and nearly opened the scoring inside the first five minutes but were denied by a fine save from the Town keeper. Town then went down the other end and came close to opening the scoring themselves when Hannah Freibach tested the keeper from 20 yards out. The keeper saved and Lindsey Whitton followed in the rebound only for it to be blocked on the line. On 25 minutes, Monique Watson drove past two Wakefield players, played a 1-2 with Shannon Beal and squared the ball for Hannah Freibach to fire home and make it 1-0 to Town. Wakefield then equalised after a defensive block ricocheted to their number 9 who fired into the top corner to level the game. Town responded well and began to take charge of the game, playing some fantastic attacking football.

As of 27th February 2022

Monique Watson and Hannah Freibach saw shots saved whilst Lindsey Whitton unluckily saw two further attempts hit the bar and post! Nat Eustance then came off the bench to put Town ahead. Town played some fantastic football, producing some excellent combination play, fizzing the ball around the pitch. Watson, Jeffels, Havard and Freibach linked up to play in Eustance who coolly slotted the ball home making it 2-1. Becky Wilson then increased the scoreline with a sensational long range effort which flew into the top corner to make it 3-1. Wakefield pulled one back on the stroke of half time as an unfortunate ricochet off the Town defender ended up in the back of the Town net, making it 3-2. Despite numerous chances in the second half to increase the score line, the game ended 3-2 to Town and most importantly they added three more points to the league table - seeing them sit in 2nd place with a game in hand.

Town Ladies are next at home on 13 March against Ossett United at Rossett Sports Centre - 2pm kick-off. Please come and show your support!

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
