THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER We’ve got another fantastic fixture coming up at the EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon as we welcome Hartlepool United. We’ve had some great matches with them in recent years that have action and atmosphere in abundance, and I’m sure we’ll see more of the same today. Reflecting on our last League Two outing, I think we got a deserved point on Tuesday night against Port Vale and the effort displayed from the lads was brilliant. We would have liked to have had more passages of play than we did, but we must give credit to Port Vale who are a strong and solid group. At times it was tough but credit to our group who dug in for each other, and we can be proud to come away with a good point against a side who I’m sure will be right in the playoff mix come the final few games of the campaign. The draw extends our run to three unbeaten which is a positive to take and confidence levels have gone up as a result of that. We’ve been more solid defensively and scored a great team goal on Tuesday that illustrated us at our attacking best; winning the ball back with aggression, short, quick passing and then the end product to match. We want to play good football and I thought the lads did a great job of wanting to stick to that on Tuesday, despite coming up against a Port Vale side who didn’t want to let us have our own way. I think we’re maturing as a group and these lads deserve the opportunity to keep evolving and to find ways of earning valuable points. We keep saying to the players that it’s acceptable in our second year in the EFL to be a work in

progress and when we do have a plateau, we just dig in as a group and allow people to grow. There will be ups and downs but it’s good to see players improving as well as now being able to utilise a a stronger squad. Everybody has to show a bit of patience in the gameplan and although not every decision will be the right one on or off the pitch, we’re a good, strong unit that’s sticking together. I’m really looking forward to this afternoon against Hartlepool who have a partisan support that will add to occasion. That, on top of it being a more local fixture and an early kick-off, it all adds that extra edge to the proceedings. I think in these types of games, the fans can play such a pivotal role and in our stadium, 3,000 supporters can sound well over double that. It’s up to us get the crowd going and really get at Hartlepool, and that It’s exactly why we want to be at this level. We want to compete in these types of fixtures and put on a show for the fans who have been so brilliant. Thank you for your support and enjoy the game.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for our lunch time kick-off against Hartlepool United. I feel like the earlier start adds that little bit extra to contest and with it being a more local fixture as well, it’s all set to be a cracking match. We come into the game on the back of some more consistent performances, which is pleasing to say. On Tuesday night we earned a good point against Port Vale in what was a tough game. They’re a big, strong and physical side who looked to turn us pretty much all night but I thought we battled well against them. We’ve had a lot of games in a short period of time, I think it’s been 11 games in five weeks and all in all, I think we’ve dug in well. I believe Port Vale will get into the play offs so to get a positive result against an outfit who have been strong all season, I believe it makes for a good point. I thought the goal we scored was quality and an example of what we can create going forward. Pato did what he’s been doing all season in terms of putting the ball away and that goal helped us to settle into the game, and I feel we settled better than what probably have in others over the last month or so. We’ve had great spells in the season and also moments which have been up and down. We know to be at the top end of the table, consistency is so important and going win, lose, draw on repeat isn’t good enough to sustain your position but we’re learning all the time. The Gaffer has made a change to the formation and spoken to the players about us sticking to it and that’s allowed
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
us to focus on our roles that have changed slightly. It’s helped us to put together a couple more consistent results and hopefully we can finish the season in that fashion. We’ve got just over a dozen games left to play and we’ll be looking to keep a run of results going. I think today will have a similar feel to when we welcomed Bradford last month which was a bouncing atmosphere and a really lively contest. We’ve enjoyed playing in those atmospheres in front of our home support and I feel like all the lads thrive on that. That passionate and loud home support does give us that extra little bit and it’s been telling in the games where we’ve come out on top. We’ll be looking for more of the same today and it’s a game we should all be looking forward to. The fans have backed us all season and hopefully we can make it a happy afternoon for them all. Enjoy the game.

We sit down and chat to Harrogate Town defender Leon Legge, whose professional career began at the age of 24. Since that moment, the 6ft4 centre half has won League Two promotions captained clubs, and played against some of the Premier League Elite. This is Leon Legge’s journey to North Yorkshire and Harrogate Town…… by Henry Whitaker
A LOVE FOR FOOTBALL FROM THE VERY START… I grew up in East Sussex in Bexhill on Sea and it’s right down on the coast. It’s quite a quiet area and not too much to do as a kid so football was the hobby to focus on. The most local club was Brighton and that was an hour away. As a kid, I had quite a few mates who lived in the same crescent as me so we all used to play football after school. There was a club nearby that we weren’t actually allowed in but five or six of us would jump the fence after school and use the dugouts as a goal. I loved watching the FA Cup growing up and from a young age I dreamt of being a professional footballer and playing at Wembley. Whether it was realistic or not I wasn’t sure as where I grew up, there wasn’t many chances or opportunities. Football was just something I enjoyed playing so I wasn’t fussed whether it was non-League or professional level.
CLIMBING THE FOOTBALL PYRAMID… I was never in any academies, I just climbed the football pyramid, really. I started with an East Sussex County League team and went up from there. I started out as a midfielder but then at 16 years old, a new manager came into the club I was at (Little Common FC) and promoted me from the under 16s to the first team. He liked us and turned us into a centre half but I didn’t think too much of it. If anything, I didn’t want to play at the back but it got me into men’s football at 15/16 years old. I quite liked the challenge of going up against people twice my size and while I was still at school, I’d be playing against people 10 years older than me. continued overleaf...

the first team manager watched me with his assistant. I think they must’ve watched me play 10 or so games before offering me a contract for the start of the following season. It was a surprise for me to get offered a contract. I found out while on holiday and I bumped into my manager from non-League and we were actually in the same hotel complex. We sat down for a drink and he told me that there would be a contract to sign with Brentford when I got home. That was a bizarre one.
LIFE WITH THE BEES… I didn’t get into the team until November but from then on, I was a mainstay. It was a fantastic year for me as I scored in FA Cup debut against Walsall and got player of the round which meant I got tickets to the final, which was Chelsea vs Portsmouth. I then won Brentford Player of the Season in my first year as well.
ENTERING THE REAL WORLD… I did sport science at college but then after finishing that I did a few jobs. I worked for my mate’s dad building tennis courts and travelling across the country, and then I fell into a job working with people who had learning disabilities and I did that for a couple years. It was an interesting job and I had fun doing it, I got a lot out of it. I also had qualifications to be a bouncer as well but football then took over.
BREAKING INTO THE PROFESSIONAL GAME… It started with Brentford when I was 24 years old, which is quite late. I had a lot of trials from the age of 20-23 at Brighton, Peterborough, Charlton and Millwall. I was always told they’d keep tabs on me but nothing came of it. In my last season at Tonbridge Angels (2009), I scored 10 goals from centre half and we were just outside the play offs in the league as well. Brentford got their youth team manager to come see me at a few games and then
14
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
I was there for four years and had a good spell under Uwe Rosler. We reached the 2010-11 Football League Trophy Final and like I said, to play at Wembley was a dream of mine. To step out at Wembley in front of 50,000 fans, it was so surreal. At the time, I was 25 years old and had just jumped up to professional football so it was a dream fulfilled. I knew I still had a lot to learn but I felt the Football League was where I needed to be and it was about sustaining that. I had worked so hard to get in, I didn’t want to fall away.
WINNING LEAGUE TWO AT GILLINGHAM… The move came about after I was out of the Brentford team and a bit frustrated at my lack of game time. Martin Allen came in for us and so I joined there originally on loan (Jan 2013) before signing permanently at the start of the 2013/14 season. We won the League Two title that season and had a few good results in the cups as well. To win a league title was one of my best experiences I’ve had as a footballer. To be at the top of the pile and win it like we did with two games to go, it was a great feeling. continued overleaf...

THINKING OF QUITTING THE GAME…
FACING THE WORLD’S ELITE AT PORT VALE…
I nearly left football completely near the end of my time with Gillingham. I wasn’t enjoying it so much but Justin Edinburgh came in and I had a good six months under him and started to enjoy football again. Before that, I really was contemplating going back to non-League and back to my roots. Getting that enjoyment back with Justin though, that spurred me on to keep playing.
I enjoyed myself at Port Vale and with most of the club’s I’ve been at, I feel like I’ve got on with the fans and left my mark I suppose. My time at Vale brings one of the most enjoyable stages of my career as I got to play against Man City and in particular, Sergio Aguero. It’s a shame he’s had to retire as he’s been one of the best strikers in the world. In the 18-yard box he never stopped moving and he was so sharp. He was two steps ahead of everyone else and then the rest of the City team, their first touch was perfect every single time, it was just a joke. Any switch off moment would get punished but saying that, I never wanted to the game to end. Probably the only game where I would have been happy if it had gone to extra time.
LEADERSHIP AT CAMBRIDGE… I joined Cambridge in 2015 and was there for three seasons. The Gaffer Shaun Derry appointed me as captain in 2016 and it something I felt I could do at the age I was. I feel like I thrived in the role and had to change a little bit in terms of keeping things disciplined and I felt I did that well. I’m quite laidback in the changing rooms but for me, I do the talking physically on the pitch. It’s when I get out on the pitch and cross that white line, that’s when things change. I had a good rapport with the fans as well which made for a good three years.
16
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
INJURY… I had a freak injury in August 2021 when I clashed with an opposition player and damaged my MCL which kept me out for 11 weeks. I came back three weeks quicker than expected but that time out was frustrating. I was the only one injured at the time so it was just me in the gym and so the first week or so was a head loss but after that, I had to focus on getting on with things. continued overleaf...

LIVING WITH EPILEPSY…
A FRESH CHALLENGE AT TOWN…
When the doctor told me at 16 years old that I had epilepsy I didn’t really know too much about the condition. I was quite a fearless kid so as long as I could train and play football, I wanted to get on with it. When I was younger I had quite a few seizures but as I got older, the seizures changed and went to me having them in my sleep. I’m on the right medication which means I don’t have too many now and I now know my trigger points.
The fit for me and Harrogate is that we’ve both got that history in non-League and with me being in the Football League for a few seasons, you pick up on things that you need to do to stay in this league. The club started the season so well and I want to add to that. I think with the Football League experience I have, I can pass that onto the players who are new to the League.
I set up a blog a couple years ago (Epilepsy Baller) when Covid began. It was something to do and I wanted to write about my experiences. It got quite a lot of feedback and I had quite a few charities see it and people from all over the world read it and contact me. There are foundations in America and one in Atlanta which uses my blog in their newsletter.
Not much has changed in League Two in the last nine or so years. It’s all about who wants it more. Some of the pitches aren’t great and so it’s about who will battle harder. You don’t see too many teams who play great football actually get promoted but I think we have a mix of everything here. There’s the humbleness of non-League journey but also the players who can get it down and play and score goals.
It’s important I take my medication and get the right amount of sleep. Football can take a lot of energy out of you, especially when its 2-3 games a week. If I need the extra 24hrs to focus on recovery then I’ve always had that.

Nicky Featherstone
Richard Lee/Shutterstock
Experienced midfielder Nicky Featherstone arrived at Victoria Park in October 2014, initially on a short-term deal, however, he quickly became an integral part of the engine room and is now the Club’s longest-serving player having passed 200 appearances in all competitions during 2019/20. Having started his career with Hull City, he moved on to Hereford United in 2011. After making almost 60 appearances for the Edgar Street outfit, Featherstone returned to the Football League with Walsall where he spent two years. Now Pools club captain, the 33-year-old was again among the top outfield appearance-makers during last season's promotion campaign and signed a new contract with the Club during the summer.

Signing in January from Doncaster Rovers, Bogle made his senior debut for Hinckley United before moving to Solihull Moors and then Grimsby Town, where he achieved promotion to league football by scoring twice in the 2016 National League PlayOff Final. The 29-year-old striker then moved to Championship side Wigan and subsequently to Cardiff City. After time on loan at Peterborough, Birmingham, and Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag he joined Charlton and then Doncaster in early 2021. Since joining Pools, he has netted four times in seven games.

The 23-year-old winger arrived at Hartlepool in January 2019 on loan from Sunderland having spent the first half of 2018/19 on loan at Gateshead. Previosuly a regular in Sunderland’s Under23s, he earned a call-up to the senior squad and made his First Team debut on the final day of the campaign as The Black Cats beat Wolves 3-0. Following his release by Sunderland, Molyneux signed permanently for Hartlepool in June 2019. Now approaching 100 games for Pools, this has been his most productive season in the blue and white, playing 42 games and top scoring with eight goals in all competitions so far this season.

Long-serving centre-forward Ken Johnson holds Hartlepool United's all-time goalscoring record. Born locally, he turned professional with Hartlepool in May 1949 and scored on his League debut at home to Bradford City seven months later. He netted the penalty that took Nottingham Forest to an FA Cup fourth round replay in 1954-55 and was leading marksman as Hartlepool finished Third Division (North) runners-up in 1956-57. Scoring a club record 98 goals in 384 League games before leaving in May 1964, he later ran a fish and chip shop in Hartlepool for many years until June 1997 and died locally in December 2011.
Midfielder John McGovern featured prominently in Hartlepool United's 1967-68 promotion success. He was Hartlepool's youngest League player at 16 years 205 days old in May 1966 and scored five goals in 72 League games before reuniting with Brian Clough at Derby County in September 1968. The Scotland U-23 international starred in their 1971-72 League Championship triumph and followed Clough via Leeds United to Nottingham Forest in February 1975, skippering two consecutive European Cup final triumphs. He became Bolton Wanderers player-manager and has since held various coaching and managerial posts.

Central defender Bill Green was the youngest captain in Hartlepool’s history. He turned professional with Hartlepool in June 1969 and missed just two matches in 1970-71, scoring nine goals in 131 League games prior to joining Carlisle United in July 1973. Skippering their 1973-74 promotion success, he was ever-present in the topflight in 1974-75 and joined West Ham in June 1976. He moved via Peterborough to Chesterfield in June 1979 and captained their 1981 Anglo-Scottish Cup final triumph, then played for Doncaster. Later managing Scunthorpe and Buxton, he scouted for various clubs and died in August 2017.
Central defender Andy Linighan gained England B honours after leaving Hartlepool United. From a local football family, he signed professional for Hartlepool in September 1980 and played alongside his younger brother David. He netted four goals in 110 League games before joining Leeds United in May 1984, then moved via Oldham Athletic to Norwich City in March 1988. Sold to Arsenal for £1,250,000 in July 1990, he headed their winner in the 1993 FA Cup final replay and also helped win the League Cup that season. He joined Crystal Palace in January 1997, then had spells playing for Oxford United and St Albans City.

WALLSEND B.C. WOMEN HARROGATE TOWN LADIES
2 3
Last Sunday, Town made the long journey up to face an in form Wallsend side. Wallsend started brightly and played some good football but never really tested Carrie Simpson in goal and despite a lacklustre first half, Town still had the best of the chances and came close on numerous occasions. Monique Watson beat two players and pulled the ball back for Rebecca Jeffels to blaze over from six yards. Nat Eustance then had a chance to open the scoring but was denied by the goalkeeper who pulled off a triple save as she blocked Watson’s and Molly Havard’s rebounds. Jeffels then went close again after Teagan Sorokan played her in behind the defence but she couldn't convert. Rach McDonald also saw a header cleared off the line. Wallsend were using the wind to their advantage with the Town defence struggling to deal with the long high ball. On the stroke of half time, Wallsend took the lead when their winger disposessed the Town centre halves and squared the ball for their striker to have a tap in at the back post.

As of 27th February 2022
After an honest and frank discussion at half time, Town raised their standards and equalised two minutes into the second half when a Becky Wilson's corner was headed home by Rach McDonald. This galvanised Town and they began to force the Wallsend side back deep into their own half. Eustance and Watson went close before Sorokoan followed in a parried Wilson shot to coolly tap home to put Town 2-1 up. Eustance then hit the crossbar with a deft lob after great combination play from the front three before a blocked Havard effort was picked up by Eustance on the edge of the box who weaved in and out of several defenders and smashed the ball into the top corner to give Town a 3-1 lead. In stoppage time, Wallsend earned themselves a penalty as their tricky winger was upended and their striker converted to make it 2-3 with minutes to play. Town kept their cool and earned themselves a hard fought three points to take back home to Harrogate.
Town Ladies are next at home on 13 March against Ossett United at Rossett Sports Centre - 2pm kick-off. Please come and show your support!

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
