AGE 9
Celebrating his 9th birthday last week, you may remember Harry, as he made the local headlines during the Christmas holidays 2020 when he ran 50km and raised over £12,000 for the Candelighters charity, after his two-yearold cousin Rosie was diagnosed with a spinal tumour earlier that year. Enjoy your day Harry!

THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for today’s 3pm kick-off against Walsall. Following the extremely frustrating night at Tranmere on Tuesday, this game can’t come soon enough and so we want the lads to go out there all guns blazing and really take the contest to our opponents. On Tuesday, refereeing decisions once again had a massive influence on the result of the game and it’s tough to take and hard to bear. Seven or eight times this season we’ve had apologies from the officials for getting key decisions wrong, but that doesn’t make things any better for us when it’s costing us points. Playing in big stadiums with partisan crowds like at Tranmere, we’re going to be outnumbered but sometimes it also feels like we’re outnumbered on the pitch, almost feeling like it’s 12v11 and that is hugely frustrating. However, I must give so much credit to our players for the discipline, attitude, effort and quality that they displayed. Before the red card I thought we were right in the game and then after that we were still probing, defending with intensity and causing Tranmere some real problems. The performance made me really proud of the lads and that type of positive reaction is exactly what we want to see at this club. We have a core group of players here who have been absolutely brilliant for us and once again, they wore the badge with pride and that makes me very proud. We are loyal to an
4
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
identity and we expect people to knock us, but that core group of players have helped drive this club to unimaginable places and we aren’t going to apologise for giving them the opportunity to continue to push this club forward. Performances like Tuesday give us great belief. It means we go into today’s fixture against Walsall with a good feeling and we want to step out onto the pitch to greet a really positive crowd. We’ve felt what it’s like to be on the other end of an influential support, and of course, we’ve witnessed it in our favour many a times at the EnviroVent Stadium. There are 10 games left in our second ever season in the Football League and you can be sure we’ll be giving it everything we’ve got to finish as high up the table as possible. As always, thank you for your support.

THE SKIPPER
JOSH FALKINGHAM I’m starting my notes this afternoon with an update regarding myself and the injury I picked up against Bradford three weeks ago. I felt discomfort in my foot during the game and played through that pain for a few games hoping it would go away. However, that hasn’t been the case and initial scans have revealed a stress fracture which is going to be put me on the sidelines, but hopefully not for too long. Anyone who knows me will know that I want to play every game I can and help the team as much as possible, so to miss out is frustrating but I’ll still be supporting the lads in every way I can. I’ll always be honest about our performances and results and won’t hide away from saying that the last few results haven’t been good enough. However, watching on the TV on Tuesday night I thought we were really unlucky against Tranmere. I’ve never seen a more horrendous refereeing performance than that and it was probably a good job that I wasn’t playing, otherwise I think I could have found myself getting sent off as well. I ended up screaming at the TV screen and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was devastated for the lads as I believe even when were down to 10 men, we carved out opportunities and deserved something from it just for the effort alone. We’ve now got a big couple of games at home and we really do want to finish the season strongly. Obviously, we’ll only do that by picking up results but I think the double header of home games is a good opportunity to turn it around. Both Walsall on Saturday and Leyton Orient on Tuesday will
6
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
be tough, tough fixtures and we’re all in similar positions. Our focus though has to be getting the three points and fighting as hard as possible to achieve that. Tuesday night showed that our attitude and effort is right, and we know we have so much talent and ability on the pitch, so we can go into these games feeling confident that we can come away with maximum points. Lastly, I just want to say that myself and the squad are always so grateful for the support we receive both home and away. We play with the aim of getting the three points and we play to entertain the fans as well, so we all feel it when the outcomes don’t go our way. We all want to finish the season as well as we can and by sticking together, I think we can make the most of the last 10 games of the campaign and climb up the table. Enjoy today’s game.

#ProudToBeTown
Having signed for Town in January 2021, Irish winger Simon Power quickly became a popular figure among the yellow and black army, with his lightning-fast pace striking fear into opposition defences. The 23-year-old scored on his fourth appearance and helped steer Town to a mid-table finish before suffering a season ending hamstring injury against Southend in March 2021. Power returned at the start of the 2021/22 campaign and looked super sharp in the opening fixture of the season against Rochdale. However, Covid-19, a quadricep injury and then a Hamstring tear have since disrupted his progression and tested his mental and physical resolve. Now back to full fitness, we sat down and chatted about the injury low and challenges he’s faced on his road to recovery… by Henry Whitaker
STARTING THE SEASON AND CONTRACTING COVID-19…
We played Rochdale on the first day of the season with me playing on the left of a midfield four. I felt I did well in that game cutting inside on my right foot and came close to scoring only for the crossbar to deny me. However, shortly after that game I started to feel ill and soon found out I had Covid and suffered quite badly with that. I obviously had to isolate for a week but it took longer than that for me to regain my energy levels and get back to full fitness. It was probably a month before I felt back to normal.
THE FIRST INJURY AN UNTIMELY SETBACK
The last game I played before my first injury was Sutton away on the 18th December. So we were off on the 19th and back in on the 20th before Tranmere away. It was a training session and at the very end of the session when I tore my quadricep. We were doing crossing and finishing, and I was on the right side putting the ball into the box. The first few felt fine but the fourth ball I delivered, I felt a little twinge that didn’t feel great but I tried one more and it then properly tore and I felt that straight away. I knew straight away that I’d done some damage. I went straight in to see
#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com
Rachel and it was about getting ice and compression on it. I then had a scan booked and saw a specialist in London soon after and he revealed I had a grade two tear on the inside of my quadricep and it was quite a nasty one. It was meant to keep me out of action for 6-8 weeks. It was not the first time I’ve had an injury but he seems to happen after I’ve had a high or been in some good form. I scored free kicks against Wrexham and Walsall and was finding some form just before I got the quad injury, one I had never had before. It was difficult to get my head around it at first because it happened right at the end of the session.
REHABILITATION The first week is difficult as there’s nothing you can do other than rest and you’ve got to ignore that little voice in your head. After a week, I could start cracking on with exercises. For most of the away games this season, I’ve watched from home on the laptop and I’d be picturing myself on the pitch knowing I could help the team if fit. It was very frustrating not being able to help, especially if we’re not firing on all cylinders. It’s also great when we’re winning but difficult not being around the lads to either congratulate them or help them when in need.
HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME I
15
THE SECOND INJURY BACK TO SQUARE ONE…
My rehab was going as planned and I was outside running after four weeks. A few days after starting that, me and Aaron Martin were in to do some routine runs and after jogging out onto the pitch, I got about 20 yards in at decent pace and felt my hamstring go, which initially had me in complete shock. I felt numb and couldn’t believe it was happening having already spent 5-6 weeks rehabbing my quad. The scan showed a 25cm tear that had also cut into my tendon so it was a very bad one which meant at least 8 weeks out. It was back to square one. I still needed to rehab my quad so I had two muscles to work on which was much harder. It was something I had never experienced before; luck wasn’t on my side at all.
SUPPORT FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS…
I have a very good support network behind me and my family were constantly in touch with me. My dad cares a lot and wants me to do as well as possible in my career, so I think he feels worse than myself. There was frustration and annoyance, and that makes the initial conversations difficult but after the first couple days you just have to crack on with it. I had people I’ve worked with and played with before getting in touch with me to give advice, telling me to keep my head up and keep busy.
It's little things like that and being more focused throughout the game so I’m not ball watching. My speed is my biggest asset so I’ve got make more use of that up the pitch.
RETURNING TO ACTION - HARTLEPOOL AT HOME…
It felt great to get back on the pitch and a long time coming. When I’ve been injured, I’ve had these images and visions in my head of me being back on the grass so to finally get back out there and have a small impact on the game, it did good for my confidence and the shoulders feel much lighter. When I first got on, I wanted to make sure my first touch was right and then I got into my comfort zone and got at the defenders and maybe could have had a couple of assists.
THE TARGET…
Durability and consistency are what I need now. I can’t afford to pick up an injury so I’m trying to do as much maintenance as I can and keep in contact with the medical department. My confidence and fitness will naturally come back and I can show people what I can do, like in November when I was performing well. I need another one of them really and can then kick on from there.
USING THE TIME WISELY…
It was important that I wasn’t just stuck inside all the time letting the voice in your head get the better of you, which can easily happen. I found myself watching a lot of Netflix so I’ve pretty much completed that but I also used the time to watch a lot of footage of myself. It gave me a lot of time to reflect and see what I can be better at. I think it’s shown in training and when I got on against Hartlepool that I’ve looked quite sharp despite being out for over three months. That’s the positive to come out from this in that I’m now both physically and mentally stronger. I can bring that out onto the pitch now and hopefully into a match scenario. I always watch the opposition full back and looking back at my highlights, I’ve noticed there are runs I can make when they lose concentration and I’m seeing moments where I could have taken advantage of a situation.

FROM THE VAULTS Our Club historian Phil Harrison delves into the archives to take a look at memorable Town matches from the past...
Season 1985/86 Northern Counties East League Division One Saturday 5th October 1985 was, as it turned out to be, the very last time that Town met Harrogate Railway Athletic in a league game at Wetherby Road which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Town were sitting 4th in the table with Rail third from bottom. The 400 to 500 fans were hoping for a good game but it was very disappointing according to a very downbeat Town manager Alan Smith as shown in the paper cutting opposite. The match didn't even warrant a full report in the Advertiser!
Above: The match action shot shows Paul Williamson (far left) playing for Rail who spent just one season at Railway. Right: Paul Williamson is of course Town's record appearance holder with 435 (12) in all competitions.
Town: Robinson, Swaine, Wilson, Parker, Marshall, King, Dawes, Johnson, Deacey, Ballantyne, Dembickjy Sub: Everitt. Railway: Jones, Regan, Tetley, Jackson, P. Render, Whyte, Docking, Williamson, Daley, Passmore, Trammar Sub: Render, Taylor.

HARROGATE TOWN AND HARROGATE HIGH SCHOOL JOIN FORCES FOR KIT OUT THE NATION
Back in September, the month-long campaign aimed at taking in and distributing unwanted, good condition sports kit and passing it on to children and teenagers who need it - saw Harrogate Town donate over 100 items to Harrogate High School including sports equipment and replica Harrogate Town shirts. A recent from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee published data from Sport England which showed 100,000 fewer children met the recommended level of activity in 2020 than in 2019 and it was "of significant concern." One obstacle that was highlighted for a lack of participation was the affordability of kit. On Tuesday 8 March, students from the Harrogate High School got the chance to wear the kit for the first time, with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 taking part in a Round Robin tournament wearing the donated kit. After the tournament, they were then told they’d be able to keep the shirts, something that they were overjoyed about. Assistant Head Teacher at Harrogate High School, Lee Wilson, was hugely grateful for the contribution from Harrogate Town:
20 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
“I want to say a huge thank you to Harrogate Town for supporting us as part of Kit Out the Nation,” Mr. Wilson said. “The equipment and kit that we’ve seen at our tournament, it’s left the student’s faces absolutely beaming. The equipment will definitely make a big difference to our kids’ lives." "When we spoke to the students and they realised they could take the kit home, they literally couldn’t believe it,” Mr. Wilson added. “It made their day and a number of them go and watch Harrogate Town at weekends. The kids have said to us they go but don’t have the kit. Now they’ll have that and they’re a part of that barmy army that absolutely go wild in that stand. Now they can be bouncing with their Town kit on. You could see the pride of the kids wearing the shirts, the pride in the badge. They love Harrogate Town, they love being part of this school and I think for them to now go home to their parents with the kit, it’s a Assistant Head, Lee Wilson massive, massive benefit.”

The school played against other League Two teams including Bradford City, Barrow and Salford City. Overall the team played 11 fixtures, finishing with a record of seven wins, two draws and two losses. Harrogate Town (St Mary’s Catholic School) finished 4th out of 12 in the main round, meaning they qualified for the semi-finals against Tranmere Rovers. The semi-final was a very tense match with both teams having a number of chances. The Tranmere goalkeeper in particular made some outstanding saves to keep the contest goalless before their striker managed to snatch the winner with two minutes left on the clock. In the third place play off, Harrogate played Salford and were victorious, winning 2-1 to finish the tournament in third place. An amazing achievement from the team!

Michael Flynn was appointed Walsall manager in February, after leaving Newport County last October, ending a long-standing relationship with the Welsh club both as a player and manager. Flynn’s playing career started with Newport in the late 1990s, and after a spell with Barry Town the midfielder moved to Wigan Athletic. He had further spells with Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City before returning to Rodney Parade to become a Newport player for the third time in 2012 and playing in the squad that won promotion back to the Football League in 2013. The 41-year-old’s association with Newport continued with roles as a Coach, Academy Manager, Club Ambassador and Football and Business Development Director, before he was appointed caretaker manager then permanent manager in 2017. Since taking over at the Bescot, Flynn has had an immediate impact with the Saddlers climbing safely away from the relegation zone, gaining 17 out of 24 points and losing just once in the last eight after a run of seven defeats on the bounce before he joined.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined the Saddlers last July having spent the last five seasons with Newport County racking up 146 appearances and captaining the club for the last four campaigns. He began his career at West Brom with loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Cheltenham Town and Tranmere Rovers before moving to the latter permanently in summer 2010. After two seasons at Prenton Park, he joined Notts County and after 18 months there, left for Torquay United in January 2014. He signed for Dagenham & Redbridge at the end of the 2013-14 season where he scored seven times and made 61 appearances before his switch to Newport in 2016. On joining Walsall, he was immediately given the captain's armband for this campaign.

The experienced defender signed for the Saddlers in July from Tranmere Rovers who the Cameroonian joined on loan in February 2018 before making the move permanent later that summer. The 26-year-old was an integral member of the Tranmere side that won back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One from 2017-2019, playing 143 games in all competitions. Monthé started at Queens Park Rangers at youth level before going on to play for a host of non-league clubs including Forest Green Rovers where he was part of the side that won promotion to the Football League in 2017 before moving to Prenton Park.

The 23-year-old forward became Walsall's 13th signing of the summer, joining on loan from Championship side Barnsley. Miller began his career at Bury before moving to Middlesbrough in July 2017. He made just one first team appearance for Boro and was loaned out to Wrexham in the December before re-joining Bury on loan. In the summer of 2018 he joined Bradford City, again on loan before signing for Barnsley in January 2019 who loaned him back to the Bantams. A further loan spell followed for 2019-20 at Scunthorpe United. For the Saddlers he is top scorer with 11 goals so far this campaign.

CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects ten post-war Walsall 'Classic Campaigns' 1959/60
Walsall stormed to the Fourth Division title under Bill Moore in 1959/60. The Saddlers kicked off with a 3-1 victory at home to Crewe and lost just one of their first 12 games to emerge as early pace-setters. Seven straight wins climaxed with an 8-0 annihilation of Southport and Jimmy Dudley was signed from West Brom in December. Walsall clinched promotion with a 4-2 victory at Oldham with seven games remaining and lethal marksmen Tony Richards, Roy Faulkner and Colin Taylor scored 67 goals between them as the Saddlers won the title by five points. Other stars included skipper Harry Haddington and Ken Hodgkisson.
1960/61
Bill Moore managed Walsall to promotion for the second consecutive season in 1960/61. They trounced Southend 5-1 in their opening home match and overcame the loss of Harry Haddington with a broken leg in late September. Top scorer Tony Richards netted four goals in a 6-2 victory over Port Vale, then Walsall completed a Christmas double over eventual champions Bury. The Saddlers remained unbeaten at home and charged to promotion with ten wins in 11 games during the closing weeks of the season, clinching the runners-up slot with a 2-1 win at Shrewsbury. Tony Richards and Colin Taylor scored 69 goals overall.

1974/75
1983/84
1979/80
1987/88
Alan Buckley was leading marksman as Walsall reached the FA Cup fifth round in 1974/75. The Saddlers lost only twice in their first ten Third Division games and triumphed 6-0 at home to Brighton. They beat Ashford Town 3-1 and Newport County 3-1 before drawing 0-0 at Manchester United in the FA Cup third round. Doug Fraser's side gained a shock 3-2 replay win in front of the TV cameras, then defeated top-flight Newcastle 1-0 in front of 19,998 at Fellows Park prior to losing 2-1 at Birmingham in the fifth round. George Andrews, Alan Buckley and Mick Kearns were ever-present as Walsall finished in eighth position.
Walsall regained Third Division status at the first attempt in 1979/80. Alan Buckley returned as player-boss and formed an exciting partnership with leading marksman Don Penn. The Saddlers were undefeated in their opening 13 games and went top of the Fourth Division after a 1-0 victory at Newport County in late December. Northampton were hammered 5-1 and Walsall remained in pole position with a record 21 match unbeaten run. Kenny Mower was a key figure in defence, Ron Green excelled in goal and Ian Paul starred in midfield. Walsall were pipped to the championship by Huddersfield after losing their last two games.

Alan Buckley guided Walsall to the League Cup semi-finals in 1983/84. The major summer signing was Colin Brazier from Lincoln and he made his debut as the Saddlers kicked off with a 1-0 win at Exeter. They overcame heavy defeats at Bolton and Oxford with new arrival Gary Childs helping to catapult Walsall into the promotion race with a 12 match unbeaten run. They beat Blackpool 4-3, Barnsley 3-0, Shrewsbury 2-1, Arsenal 2-1 and Rotherham 4-2 in the League Cup before losing 4-2 on aggregate to Liverpool in the semi-finals. Midfielder Craig Shakespeare was ever-present as the Saddlers finished sixth in the Third Division.
Tommy Coakley managed Walsall to Third Division play-off final glory in 1987/88. The Saddlers beat West Brom 3-2 in the League Cup first round and were early pacesetters after losing only twice in 22 games. Nicky Cross grabbed a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory at home to Rotherham shortly before he joined Leicester in January and Walsall narrowly failed to secure automatic promotion, finishing third after failing to win their last two matches. The Saddlers defeated Notts County 4-2 on aggregate, then drew 3-3 with Bristol City in the play-off final before David Kelly netted a hat-trick in Walsall's 4-0 replay triumph.

1994/95
Ever-present strikers Kyle Lightbourne and Kevin Wilson scored 39 goals between them as Walsall won promotion in 1994/95. Chris Nicholl replaced Kenny Hibbitt in charge after a poor start to the season and the Saddlers surged up the Third Division table after losing just once in 15 games before New Year. Fulham were defeated 5-1, Hereford United 4-3 and Barnet 4-0 during that spell and Walsall took Leeds United to an FA Cup third round replay. The Saddlers remained in the promotion frame and gained four successive victories before clinching the runners-up slot with a 0-0 draw at Bury in their final match.
1998/99
Walsall won promotion to the First Division under new manager Ray Graydon in 1998/99. Newcomers included Neil Pointon, Andy Rammell and Darren Wrack,
with the Saddlers winning their opening match at Gillingham 1-0 and gaining six victories in their first nine games. Swedish midfielder Bjarni Larusson arrived in September and Walsall won 1-0 at home to Preston to go second in the table at the start of the following month. They lost 2-1 to Millwall in the Auto Windscreens Shield area final but won four of their six matches in April and clinched promotion with a 3-1 win at home to Oldham, finishing runners-up.
2000/01
Ray Graydon plotted Walsall's 2000/01 Second Division play-off final triumph. The Saddlers had been relegated the previous season and Brett Angel scored twice on his debut as they kicked off with a 3-2 win at Rotherham. He formed an exciting partnership with fellow newcomer Jorge Leitao as Walsall won their first five games, remaining in pole position until a 2-1 defeat at Brentford in

late October. They maintained their promotion challenge, trouncing both Swansea and Wycombe 5-1, and qualified for the play-offs in fourth position. Walsall beat Stoke 4-2, then defeated Reading 3-2 after extra-time in the play-off final.
2006/07
Walsall won the League Two title with a club record 89 points in 2006/07. The Saddlers raced to the top of the table after winning their first three games under new manager Richard Money. They beat Peterborough 5-0 and regained pole position with a 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers in mid-September, losing only two of their opening 27 matches. Displaced by Hartlepool United after winning just once in seven games, they clinched promotion with a 2-1 victory at Notts County, then pipped Hartlepool to the title despite being held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Swindon in their final match. Dean Keates was leading marksman with 13 League goals.

TOWN LADIES RESERVES RIPON CITY LADIES

Harrogate Town Ladies Reserves enjoyed a 1-0 victory over top of the league, Ripon City, last weekend thanks to a Charlotte Knowles goal. It was a tight and cagey game with both teams finding themselves with opportunities to take the lead but neither team could capitalise early on. Anouska Dresser came close from a corner but the Ripon City centre half was there to clear the ball off the line. Em Crispin saw herself in behind the defence after a great through ball from Alicia Hall but failed to convert the chance and open the scoring. Ripon City’s striker came close just before half time where she dragged her shot wide of the far post. The second half saw Polly Asquith Brown come out of goal and become and instant threat upfront. Jess Flynn’s through ball saw Polly beat her defender and put a brilliant ball into the box but unfortunately it evaded the Town players. Charlotte Knowles put in a performance well beyond her years as she continued to mop up any danger

at the back, including a perfectly timed last ditch tackle to stop the striker getting in on goal. Charlotte then made the difference at the other end after a brilliant Asquith Brown corner saw Charlotte Knowles volley home the ball from 6 yards out to make it 1-0 with 10 minutes to go. With moments to go, a late tackle on Em Crispin saw her carried off, which was an unfortunate way to end a good game. However, a young Town side managed to show their composure and hold on to the 1-0 lead and get a vital 3 points and victory over top of the league which now sees them move up into 5th place. Town’s Academy lads were left disappointed after Doncaster Rovers fought back from 2-0 down with ten men to win 4-3 at West Riding County HQ. Town started the game brightly and after just nine minutes were awarded a penalty when Rovers’ Will Flint was adjudged to have pulled back Emmanuel Ilesanmi in the box. The defender was shown a straight red card by the referee and George Horbury stepped up for Town and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to put Town into an early lead. Moments later, Emmanuel Ilesanmi put Town 2-0 up when he created some space for himself and cooly slotted past the keeper. Despite being a man down and the early two-goal deficit, Rovers continued to cause Town problems and in a crazy five minute period before half time, their persistance was rewarded with three goals in quick succession. A strike from Alex Fletcher, header

by Owen Scattergood, and a penalty from Jack Goodman completely turned the match on its head and sent the visitors in 3-2 up at half time. After the restart, a rejuvenated Doncaster continued to attack and as well as hitting the cross bar were kept from extending the lead by Town keeper Harvey Giles. However, he was unable to stop Tom Henson’s confident finish from distance in the 66thminute, after some neat play down the right-wing. Town refused to give up and pushed Rovers all the way with Joe Dixon pulling back the arrears in the 73rd-minute from a rebound to set up a tense finish to the game but despite 10 minutes of added time and some heroic defending from the visitors, Town couldn’t find an equaliser and Rovers held on and returned to South Yorkshire with the points. Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
